He makes his tests really F-ing hard, but he curves the class at the end of the quarter so grades turn out ok.
Easy enough if you go to class and take notes. Tests will be hard either way, but are much more manageable if you show up and have some idea of what he is talking about. Curves at the end of the quarter, but a lot of people were at F's before the curve, and they wound up with C's.
By taking this class under this professor you will learn alot but, he is really hard on grading, and his exams are "confusing". SO, unless you're gonna study your ass off don't think you are going to pass... IT is true he curves but then you'll have to deal with the agony of not knowing whether you are going to pass or fail
Super Cool Prof! This class was way easy, as long as you go to class most of the time... especially during the second portion of the quarter (he gives extra credit)
Schmitt really made this class interesting. He's straight to the point & makes the material and concepts extremely understandable. I earned an A- because I did an awful job on the "notes" assignment. I thought I had more time. READ the text. If he writes, take notes. If he says it'll be on the exam, it will. GREAT PROF, I'd gladly take him again!
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY HIS DEMEANOR! nice guy! but this Professor makes his tests REALLY HARD! as in, even if you studied your assss off..be prepared to do some hard mental analysis during the tests..THEY ARE NOT A GIVEN! YOU MUST READ EVERYTHING, UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING to do good on the tests..if not, your skrewed..sorry
Do not take Schmitt. All his TA's may say he's nice guy but he's not. His tests are super hard and he makes them tricky with the scantron wording (A,B,C,D, none, all or A and B only crap). He talks really boring and makes you read for clicker/attendance points.
please, please do not take this prof. schmitt. he is awful...his test is so hard. his test answers are (a,b,c,d,e) all of the above, none of the above. worst prof. in sociology.
After dropping him the first time, I'm taking him again and I think he rocks! YES, he's tough and his tests aren't easy: you MUST read, take notes, attend class to get the material down, but he's great at explaining it and a really cool, nice guy. Recommended for people who want to learn!
His lecture notes are NEVER complete and his tests are made to be TRICKY. This is the seocnd time taking him. I did not know he was teaching this class, if I knew before I wouldn't have taken him! Nice guy, bad teacher!
He is such a nice guy, and he's really helpful, but his class was so hard! I went to every lecture, usually got the clicker questions right, read everything, and still failed the midterm! When he says read the intro, read the whole chapter!
Fair teacher. The class is pretty easy if you just do the reading and pay attention during lecture. I'm guessing the people that did really bad in the class -- didn't read and didn't pay attentinon. However, the paper assignment was a little bit difficult and harshly graded.
teacher was cool, but soc 157 was not what i expected. unless you like making graphs and figuring out paths, diameters, density and things like that about how people network with each other than its not for you.
Soc 20 was a fairly interesting class. No prerequistes. Very passable. The reading was not overwhelming. The major issue seems to be his testing method, which I guarantee if you come to class regularly and be slightly attentive you can pass. I studied for my final for only two hours before taking it. I got a 102. I dont see why everyone complains.
you have to read the material and go to lecture and if you do both ull do fine in the class.
His lecture slides lacked depth and content.'Sexualities' was interesting, but he purposely makes his exams difficult and 'tricky' (I often missed all the clicker questions although having done the assigned reading). His exam included material that was not 'assigned reading', but was 'recommending readings' on Ilearn (hint). Journal/paper was ok.
Men/Masculinity was interesting, but he managed to ruined it. I'd walk out of class more confused. He should focus on improving his powerpoint slides than be incorporating his family album. Clicker questions/exam very difficult.Exam includes:multiple choice, matching, short answer, essays, fill in the blank (and more! all in one exam). Paper was ok.
I won't lie, his tests are hard and the phrasing isn't great, but if you are unsatisfied with your grade approach him with valid arguments and reasoning and he will work with you. Doing the reading is an absolute must, but it's okay because there's really not a lot of it. He's very understanding and I wouldn't mind taking another class with him.
Seems like a nice guy. He's got long uncombed hair and rides a bike to his classes... reminds me of a natural hippie. I'm sure he's smart but appearance makes me not want to take him seriously. His slides are confusing. Difficult to tell whether it's a continued sentence or another bullet. To keep it short: no good.
go to class and read. he is hard but not impossible. i think people forget they are taking upper-division classes which require effort if you want a good grade.
I took him for soc 150 & 151, both were very hard classes. You absolutely must attend lecture and reading is also important. His paper is both easy and hard, 4 2pg essays. Not impossible to get a good grade but you have to put in the work to get the grade you want. He's very helpful during office hours.
Nice guy...terrible instructor. He made Sexualities a lot harder than it needed to be. His tests were insane, especially 7 pages of material in a 50 minute class. Tests/clicker questions were extremely tricky, and seemed to be a bit cautious/conservative when teaching a class where one is expected to be quite liberal/frank with the material.
Really nice teacher and interesting class. Class was easy as long as you went to lecture, took clear notes, and did the reading. Paper was easy and gave extra credit. Clicker was used just for attendance, no questions were asked.
Great professor!!!!!! Its going to be my fourth time taking him!!! He's not that easy, but he's very fair!!!! There's extra credit but you have to attend class in order to receive the full points. You must also have a registered clicker!!!! His papers have specific guidelines to follow and his study guide is very straightforward!!!
just had the first mid-term. STUPID HARD! some of the questions i did remember, but most of it was hard. Fill in the black/short answer type questions along with multiple choice. Don't take this professor unless you want to fail
Great Prof. He's tough but explains theories using easy to understand examples. Provides various ways to increase overall grades. Exams are hard so in depth studying and attending all his lectures are a must. He is very approachable and takes care that you understand when you ask for help. Enjoyed his class immensely.
WORST TEACHER EVER. Doesn't care about students. Tests are ridiculously hard and he tricks you on purpose using A B C, A&B, A&C, Only B&C all of the above or none and demands clicking into lectures. Asks for several essays throughout the quarter. He will talk to you condescendingly.
He was not very clear and he didn't seem interested in whether people understood the material or not. Tests were extremely difficult and he tested over how much you could memorize.
Tests are crazy hard. Does not care if students pass. I would not recommend this professor.
This professor is definitely hard when it comes to tests and lectures; but hes fair in his grading. he gives extra credit, curves on the exams, and if you attend class regularly, he takes that into consideration at the end of the quarter. people who complain are students who didnt have interest in the subject, or just straight up didnt study hard
Great at lecturing information but goes fast. Gives an extra credit assignment for all his classes. His exams are hard. He curves 5 pts on exams IF the average is below 70. 5 pts sounds a lot, but if the average is a 64 and he curves, you get a 69, not so great, but he gave my class 8pts. Don't take two of his classes at once, it'll hurt your grade
Took course over summer and even though it was extremely inconvenient, I am glad I did. I knew going in that Dr. Schmitt was tough, having had him for Soc169, but I also knew I would learn something. His lectures are informative and compliment the readings. He is not a prof you can coast with and I appreciate that.
I studied very hard for his tests and prepared for like 10 hours for his midterm and yet it was still SUPER difficult. It all comes down to not knowing what his expectations were for the tests, and he isn't very good at communicating that. It is a giant memorization fest of way too much material to cram into your head basically.
NOT INTERESTING and NOT FUN, VERY HARD TESTS, I wouldnt take a class from him ever again. Lectures are all over the place and he thinks HES a good prof just cause he gives crazy tests. Fails to connect topics to the bigger picture
He gives way too much material on the study guide with only 1 week in advance before the test. On the study guide you have to answer 3 pages of questions which may take you 4 days to finish with a study group (do not attempt to do it alone). Then when you are done, you have to soak in 15 pages of answers in the next 2 days before the test.
I managed to receive an A in his class. I stress doing all the readings. They are very important as his tests draw upon from quite a bit of the readings. A helpful tip in doing well in one of Schmitt's classes is to actually take an interest in the material.
I didn't buy the book (went to the library) and ended up with a C+. GO to class! He does daily clickers and sometimes when there aren't enough students, he gives extra credit. Also, he doesn't post his lectures online. Listen to him while in class, he says things that are vital to the exams!!!
Here's what you need to know about Schmitt, and I've taken him MANY times so I think I've got him figured out.. He will distribute a midterm and a final that is so hard that he will grade everyone based off of the highest grade in the class, so hope and pray you are smarter than your peers. ATTEND LECTURE, he's pretty informative and bright.
Guy is pretty chill, definitely puts work into his lectures, when many times it seems like he's just pulling together analogies on the spot. If you put in just a little bit of effort, you will learn some interesting stuff, if you put in more effort it's still pretty cool.
Looks and kinda acts like the guidance counselor from the tv show Freaks and Geeks. Good show. Good teacher. Semi hard tests, understand the reading.
Tough class! A lot of writing and assigned readings every lecture that HAVE to be read to pass the class. 1 midterm and term paper based on the readings. 1 extra credit assignment and final also based on readings. Takes clicker attendance every lecture and slides are short and not in depth, not posted on iLearn. Be willing to work hard.
lemme tell you something about smittttyyy.... seems like a wonderful guy. once you hit midterm and finals. he is hard. & his test make you wanna cry.... good luck if you can handle his class.
Lectures r mandatory & 10% of grade relies on clicker points. They r vague & slides r nothing bt subject titles. tests are IMPOSSIBLE. Midterm had a take home essay & a scantron portion which 100% of the class failed. The final is even harder & is only curved 5 points . Avoid him; regardless of effort, it won't be good enough for the tests.
Lecs are mandatory. paper questions had nothing to do with the class. i read every single reading and could teach the class myself and still got an F on the final. relied mostly on the TA to teach me and he though schmitt was full of it. STAY FAR AWAY. the only way to pass is to literally write everything he says down and memorize it. Good Luck.
He is a really chill professor but his exams are tough for a sociology course. As long as you do the readings (and actually understand them) and go to lecture you should be fine. I regret not doing more of the readings. He also gives extra credit. Take advantage of it you will need it.
ive taken schmitts class 5 times throughout my ucr career and got A-, A-, B+, B, B-. heres the secret: EVERYTHING THAT COMES OUT OF HIS MOUTH SHOULD BE WRITTEN DOWN ON YOUR NOTES. yes, that means use a laptop. yes, that means attend class everyday. yes, u will have about 30 pages of notes by the end of the term. [email protected] for sample notes
extremely hard, not recommend
Schmitt is a very intelligent professor. However, he is so full of himself that he makes this class waaaay harder than it should be. All of the material is stupidly straightforward but his constant barrage of terms and concepts make this class unbearable. His tests are ridiculous and his TAs are merciless when grading papers. Don't take Schmitt!
This is the worst professor I've ever took. Mandatory attendance for both lecture and discussion. Big difference between his lecture ppt slides and his exams. Challenging paper will be given during the quarter with an extremely short period of time to prepare to write. No mercy at all! Stay away from taking his class.
I took this class as an elective and it was by far the worst mistake I made. Take ANYTHING else but this. I've never had a professor as anal about formatting. The tests are specific, lecture is unclear, and slides are pretty much useless. He's a pretty unreasonable grader as well. The content CAN be interesting, but it's not worth the headache.
HARDEST professor Ive ever had at UCR. His lecure slides are all over the place and don't help at all on the midterms or final. He is so unorganized and even though he gives study "hints" they dont do a thing. Dont take his courses unless you want to make your life at UCR difficult
he uses inappropriate words for this class, he is unprofessional. his lectures and powerpoints are a bunch of non sense. his appearance is unprofessional. his entire course is non relevant to topic. he is emotional about attendance cuz he knows no one wants to hear his nonsence. d take him i avoid all his classes because he is
he's full of himself and thinks he's the greatest thing in existence. His appearance is more of a homeless person. his powerpoints are a bunch of random words he put togeter before class that make NO sense. he's very inappropriate and immature. He get's hurt about attendance because no one likes his class and its the only way to get student 2 stay
This class along with other classes i have taken with him are definitely challenging. You have to do all the readings as his power points are mainly to assist u. His exams can be hard but he is always willing to answer questions in office hours and is very helpful!he offers extra credit & attendance also helps with ur overall grade
Must attend lecture, uses clickers for credit right at the beginning of class and at the end. Quiz was difficult, midterm was a little easier.
a lot and a lot and a lot of writing. and they're graded really harshly by the TA's. I usually get an A on my sociology papers but in this class I got B's and D's on them.
Hard, but good. Quizzes are like extra midterms, very long and difficult. Exams even worse. Be ready to focus on the small aspects of the readings as well as the big pictures.
For the next two years, I will forever go out of my way to avoid taking this guy again. I literally made an account on this site to give him a bad rating and save you all. Lectures are extremely fast and unclear, powerpoint slides un-detailed, lots of reading, and the tests are among the hardest Ive ever taken.
hardest professor at UCR !! don't take him. Ive never failed a class in my life until his class!
Schmitt receives a lot of flack, but I've had him twice and I honestly find him enjoyable, however he does things differently. Expect essays that require you to know your material and have fair weight in comparison to tricky multiple choice tests that also hold you to your knowledgecomprehension of texts. Attend every lecture and you'll do fine.
Lots of reading to do every week. Overall very good and he made lecture interesting
Both midterm and final were very difficult because the multiple choice sections were tricky. MUST READ ALL THE ARTICLES TO PASS. Term paper was pretty easy. TAs are tough but are very helpful as well. Lectures are not as boring as I thought. He tries to make them interesting. Wouldn't mind taking his class again.
Very chill and nice hippie kind of guy, but his classes are pretty hard. Go to office hours, he will be more than willing to help you out. Take his classes if you actually want to learn and be challenged. But if you just want an easy class this is not the class for you.
Hardest professor I have ever taken at UCR. Do not take him!!!
Nice professor! We had to read 2 books. Use Clicker to take attendance. Gave us 1 extra credit paper, 1 term paper, and take home midterm paper. We watched 2 movies, which were important for your term paper and exams.
Not a fan. He is not organized but expects students to work hard. Extra credit paper, take-home portion of midterm, and term paper are similar and redundant. The lectures are not clear and exams are hard. I ended up with A, but that is with the curve and extra credit. Do the readings, attend lectures, and take good notes.
Prof. Schmitt was a very laid back professor. I only missed two lectures during the quarter, and was sure to read the slides for classes I missed. I ended up getting an A. You must pay attention and take good notes. His MC exam questions are pretty tricky. Essays were easy, given that you follow guidelines. Has a slight curve, but don't count on it
Quite knowledgeable. Assigned readings every 2 days about 20-30 pgs long, which was hard to keep up with. Exams based on readings/lectures & pretty detailed. Lectures were disorganized, things were all lower case & it was hard to distinguish btwn. new topics. Helpful if you go to office hours. Discussion helped a lot. Class was hard, but doable.
So Prof. Schmitt is a very nice guy but he is extremely boring to the point that i couldn't focus anymore. he goes off topic 90% of the time. his notes are bullet points so you have to write his description while he explains it. he is extremely hard for an undergrad prof. You're completely on your own if you take him, just you and the book.
Under no circumstances should anyone be tortured the way he did to us. He does not try to make the class easy at all. He's not clear with his instructions or guidelines of his papers. the final killed everyone's grade after there was hope for some of us to get Bs. lectures are boring and he uses clickers. I'm about to get my first C thanks to him.
He doesn't help at all. His assignments are the hardest thing we have ever seen. He destroyed everyone's GPA. His powerpoints are only three words on each slide. He will just make everything worse for you and make your life miserable. You will go out questioning and thanking God how are you still alive.
He doesn't give you any useful information because he is always talking about his life and his kids. He is tiring and unbelievable grader. His work is exhausting and endless. It will probably be fine if you don't show up for his tests or finals because you are going to get a horrible grade either way. It's tough to focus and keep track of his work
This professor is very boring. uses clickers because if he didn't, no one would show up. his lecture slides are one word that requires you to write every single word that comes out of his mouth which is unrealistic. if you make the mistake of taking his class make sure you video tape it. his tests are pretty hard too. tried super hard got a C
Attendance is required because he uses clickers at the beginning and end of his lectures. Listening in class is vital because his tests are based off of his lecturing and his power points are inadequate. He explicitly claims not to use trick questions on the tests but he clearly does. 1 quiz 1 midterm 1 course paper and 1 final. Textbook was free.
Professor Schmitt is a very down to earth kind of guy. He mostly uses lectures slides and TED talks. His exams are sort of hard because they are are multiple choice, but he curves them. Clickers are used and it's critical that you have them registered for the quarter. The term paper is very easy if you have done the readings.
One of the hardest professor's that I've had at UCR, but also one of thee most compassionate instructors I've ever met. Although his lectures weren't much in detail the key to fully understanding is listening to him speak as he explains lectures. Readings are very important in this class and so is attending section/lecture if you want to pass!
It is possible to get an A, but it will be difficult. You have to read A LOT, and most of it on your own time. Although the midterm and final were not cumulative, the final was tested on 9 chapters, five of which we had to read on our own. I tried asking him questions during office hours, but he was very condescending.
Schmitt is an extremely nice person, but his teaching style is NOT for everyone. His exams are rough. He takes attendance via clickers and his exams are based strongly off the readings and random examples he mentions in class that no one really remembers. You are going to want to grab a coffee, stay awake through his dull lecture & take notes.
Took this class fall quarter 2016. very unorganized as well as stubborn. likes to ramble on and on in his lectures and doesn't really point out what is important. tests are hard not only because there is a LOT of material but because he doesnt make his tests until the last second which means horribly worded questions and lots of grammatical errors
Very lecture heavy and test heavy. tests aren't necessarily hard but essays are a little weird. Graded tough on essays depending on TA. Does not make his tests until the last second so even the TAs have no idea whats on them. You dont need the books too much. Class is not too hard but I wont take his class ever again.
I honestly love Schmitt, he grades on a curve so i went from an A- to an A. To pass the class you HAVE to read the book and understand it. I too notes as I read along, but i would start reading two days before the test and essays. Just try and you shall pass, not that difficult.
lots of reading, doesn't tie in readings to lectures. difficult grader, doesn't make it clear what he's looking for.
I would not recommend taking him. His lectures are boring, no substance. He is not open minded about students when situations come up and you try to speak with him.
Well I only took him for SOC001, while a lot of people who have written reviews have had him for upper divs. I have heard many stories about just how brutal he is in those classes, however he was extremely laid back for the intro class (that would make sense). Tip: Write down WHAT HE SAYS, PowerPoints literally have 5 words max on them.
He never talks about what he's looking for but expects us to know it. His questions on the midterms and finals reflect that. He also asks questions about things we've never talked about in class/lecture. The readings have nothing to do with the lecture. He does, however, recycles questions from previous tests.
By far the hardest class I've taken at UCR, if you don't like attending class this is not the prof for you. The "quiz" was 50 questions and the midterms/final were the hardest tests I have ever taken. Tricky for no reason.
I have taken Professor Schmitt for many other classes and I absolutely HATE taking his courses. The way that he lectures is horrible. Though he does provide good examples. The midterms are worded in a difficult format to understands. I try to avoid taking any of his course whenever I can but sometimes I have no choice. SAVE YOURSELF!!!!
Tests are very hard, but he is generous with the curve and offers extra credit. You have to keep up with the readings. Readings that are not covered in class will still be on the test. He tests on minor details. For lecture, be prepared to write! He puts barely anything on the powerpoint... write EVERYTHING he says. Attendance is mandatory.
Honestly a lot of people complain about Schmitt but he is a sweet and chill professor. If you're looking for an easy class, I would not recommend him. His lectures are a little vague for the material he actually quizzes and tests you on. If you put in the effort to read and study you'll do fairly well. JUST PUT SOME EFFORT TO READ. YOU'LL PASS.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class unless you are willing to self study. Almost everyone struggled. He curves though (Thank God).
As long as you attend every lecture and keep up with the readings it shouldn't be difficult, I suggest you take note of everything he says in class because copying the power points won't be enough overall he's a pretty chill professor and I actually enjoyed the lectures
Honestly, the worst class I've taken. The lecture is interesting however he is a HORRIBLE test giver. Test are extremely difficult and he grades hard. I would not recommend this class to ANYONE.
He gives your grade many chances to improve. I've taken him for four classes already and looking forward to the fifth. He's really chill, his lectures are vague because everything is based on the reading. So, do the readings and go to lecture (for attendance and the end curve) and you'll do fine. Also the quiz if very helpful so don't throw it away
EVERYTHING is graded at 100pts so study your butt off, do the readings, and ask questions. He's honestly super chill and you can go up to him for help and he will do just that. Make sure you go to class (he uses clickers) because he gives points and uses them as a curve at the end. Exams are difficult but again, as long as you read, you'll be fine
I had this professor three times each for a different class. He is a very sincere and honest professor, yeah he is known as a tough prof. in Soc but do know that he is understanding and reasonable, also very helpful in office hours. Be prepared to read and attendance. Quiz, midterm, final, 2 papers and participation. Stressful yet worth it.
HORRIBLE TEACHER!! I'm the student that normally gets a solid B in every class. I ended up with a F! Had to retake this class over the summer with a different teacher. This class was extremely confusing in regards to grading. Hes a cool guy don't get me wrong, but his teaching sucks.
Horrible professor, but I am satisfied with my grade!
Attendance matters heavy in this class. There were additional deductions from my grade because of attendance that ultimately made a huge difference in my grade, and this is with getting Bs on all the midterms and final exam, and having a perfect section grade. The tests are easy. Just literally read the readings. Dont rely on notes.
The people complaining about their grade are the ones who did not attend lecture or discussion regularly. You literally need to attend every lecture. You can miss one lecture and still get full credit. But if you miss alot, then you're going to get a D. He makes that clear in lecture. His lecture isn't that bad. Tests are based on readings.
Dont do it. Hes a cool guy but not a very good teacher. Attendance will make or break you. His lecture powerpoint slides are unclear and not very useful. You will end up lost or confused. It is not worth it. Show up and read the book and you might survive
I do not recommend him at all.
Everyone always says that he's a tough professor but he's actually really good at teaching the material and overall really chill. You get the grade that you deserve and if you don't do the readings and show up obviously you'll get a bad grade. Those who comment badly are usually the ones who don't do the work or want an easy grade.
He is a delight, I really like and took a lot from his lectures. He explains the topics in a way that is easily understood and really respects and helps his students. If you consistently go to class and pay attention, you will pass and have a good time doing it.
Schmitt is a likeable guy, but his exams are unnecessarily difficult. The multiple choice was so difficult because he worded everyone completely different than he did in lecture, so it felt useless to study the definitions he gave us when the exam would be completely different. Literally my first C ever and I put a lot of effort into studying.
Course was very needlessly difficult. Trust me, I put in the work for this class and I did pretty well, BUT those tests were absolutely absurd. Wording was confusing and the questions were vague and had grammatical errors at times. Used most annoying questioning methods (A and B only. All of above) for a good portion of test. Avoid this prof.
I've taken 2 classes with him and I knew taking him again would be a bad idea. His teaching style is vague and I leave each lecture more confused than when I entered, even doing the readings beforehand. Even the TA expressed frustration. The exams are absurd and he needs to switch up his style. Nice guy, but would definitely not recommend.
I know when to take responsibility for my own actions and inactions. Frankly, I actually like owning up to them. I can also discern between a class with difficult content and a class with content made needlessly difficult. First class I ever failed in my 3 years of attending ucr and it was soc 3. Content was easy. But tests were insanely stupid.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Textbook makes no sense and is never explained by him or the TA's, power points are vague and unclear, his tests are sooo hard when the material itself is not. Good person but a HORRIBLE teacher. Caused me a lot of stress, anger, frustration, and tears. I don't even want to major in sociology anymore thanks to him.
Had him for two upper divs in one quarter and I got an A- for both. If you try, and I mean pay attention in lecture and do the readings, then you would be extremely satisfy with your grade. If you're taking him for the first time, I advise you to take good notes and read the short novel he assigns, attend class, and do the extra credit.
His lectures and the readings do not pertain to anything on the test. Class is more difficult than it actually really is. I usually like to test out professors myself instead of just going off of what other people think, but everyone in this comment section is right. If you want an F or C-/+,take the course if you will. Its at your own risk.
Attendance is worth 20% of your grade, have to pay $50 for an unnecessary clicker + buy Soc book + book he makes you read that will be part of answering 3 essay questions, and if you miss first 1 minute of class and use clicker, you only get half a point for that day. Clicker will be your biggest issue and then once you take the exam, your 2nd.
1. Attendance is worth 20% of course grade. Must buy clicker in addition to course book 2. Miss class, you will fail. Come to class, study, and take exceptional notes.. still fail 3. Not easy to talk to. Break clicker.. tells you to buy new one.. cant afford it... tells you long story about him in 1900s and compares your lifestyle to his
I'm not going to beat the bush around Schmitt. He is TOUGH. However, that doesn't mean I did not enjoy his class. It was challenging, but if you are willing to put in time into the class, and you LIKE sociology then you should be fine. Most people taking this class imo should be soc majors (i recommend you take soc1 if you just need breath classes)
Worst class I have ever taken. The professor will not work with you for anything. Studying is pointless because the wording is so skewed it feels like your taking a test for another class. Grading is very harsh and class is beyond boring. I am honestly going to the school board if UCR doesnt do anything to change how professors teach. I learned?no
His lecture power points are a joke; he focuses on pictures and has very little information on his slides. He tries his best to make sociology as important as the scientific sciences; so he sets 2 days for each midterm, one essay format, and one scantron. I would not recommend him,i would wait for another professor if u really need the class.
I highly dont recommend taking Schmitt. His lectures are so vague. He also assigned readings that didnt make sense and had no connection to the exams.
Not as hard as people make him sound. Clicker points are taken at the beginning and end of class. Lots of reading but it's doable. One small book needed, but everything else is posted on Ilearn . His exams come straight from lectures and readings. He also gives extra credit at the beginning of the quarter and curves tests.
He does not know how to teach.. At ALL. Hardest class I ever taken when the class is easy. Dont take him if you have a life, kids, family, or job. He expects you to come to his class everyday or you lose points which is part of your grade on top of discussion which you have to go to. He wants you to sit in class and learn nothing
I won't lie, Schmitt is hard. But then again, this is college so no shocker. You have to show up, read the books, and be ready for EXTREMELY detailed tests. TIP, do ANY extra credit he assigns and see him and his TA's during office hours cause it could save your grade if they see effort on your behalf. Good prep for upper division classes.
Honestly, his class was wild. I admire him for his teaching skills and ability to apply it to a variety of things while staying true to the information. I found it super entertaining to make connections between the movie Antz and ideas from MARX & Weber. This class was Hard but extremely rewarding. DON'T MISS CLASS or you'll be confused
Prof. Schmitt doesn't use slides filled with info, he puts a few words/topics on the screen & explains them with definitions & examples. In order to pass you MUST LISTEN to what he says & take note of his examples. Connect his examples with the main topics & readings & you'll do fine. He runs all his courses this way.
Dont take ANY of his classes. Students are avoiding his classes at all cost. His tests dont make sense. Ppl saying his reading is doable is inaccurate. Students with 4.0s get a barely passing grade
Your tests make your grade and the tests dont make sense. He is a good teacher and lectures are fine but the tests just dont line up with what youve learned when it comes down to wording and comprehension
your attendance counts by having to purchase a clicker. your grade is based on 3 exams, which i studied so much for and the highest i got was a 40. His lectures are easy, but his tests are questioned ridiculously. When you ask him to clarify one on one, he makes you feel like you asked a dumb question. This class is not worth it
he gives great lectures! if you do all the readings and go to 80% of the lectures its definitely easy to get a pretty good grade. there is a textbook and a fictional novel both of which are easy reads. he gives some extra credit for 100% attendance and a small optional project.
Funny guy, but grades horrible. This was a very tough class and this professor impacted my mental health but I was able to survive so you might too. If you can avoid him PLEASE do but if you can't just be prepared and study A LOT!
if you don't read, you wont pass and ask questions
Schmidt is a good professor. He makes you work for the grade that you earn! Pay more attention to what he says while lecturing vs copying down lecture slides from the PowerPoint. When preparing for exams, make sure you are able to define terms and apply them to real life scenarios. He pushed me to try hard and work hard. Learn vs memorize
This professors thought process is erratic and so is the text book he uses. His flow of lecture makes no sense and so you have to essentially make a master notes outline and patchwork the textbook and his lectures together to make a coherent text for yourself. If you do this, which is 3x the work of a normal class, you should do just fine.
I took this professor for Sociology 176 and he's a very tough grader. He doesn't allow extra credit anymore since he teaches too many classes. He doesn't give you a paper to work on if your skills are writing it's tough to prove it. Short answers on the exams along with multiple choice. You can't record his lectures if you have a disability like me
This is the second time I take Schmitt. His exams are so hard its ridiculous, I understand the information in lecture but when it comes to his exams I usually get 50-60%. Readings are hard as well. Lecture notes don't have a flow to them. It's a bit unorganized. I thought I'd do well the second time around. BIG MISTAKE. He's a nice guy tho
The professor makes the class harder than it needs to be. He speaks in riddles, and the power points don't help at all. The midterm was worth 45% of the grade, and was done in two parts which was beyond overwhelming. After the midterm, students were burnt out and tired of the class. AVOID THIS MAN ON GOD! NO CAP.
This class is Introductory Sociology, which should be a relatively easy class for any sociology or psychology majors. I am a second year psych major and I can say this has been the worst class I have ever taken. The professor's slides are all just individual words and he speaks in riddles. He gives no study materials. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. PERIOD
His teaching methods make absolutely no sense. It is so hectic its exhausting to even make sense of it. Final was 100 multiple choice, but it was like trying to solve 100 riddles with no distinct answer. Midterm was excessive. P.1- 14 questions with 3 terms. Define 2 with a paragraph for each. P.2- 50 m/c. Waste of time and energy.
His methods of teaching are a waste of time, no matter how hard you study the tests make no sense he makes you define like 8 terms into a paragraph and makes it hard.
This was not a hard class by any means. I studied the night before all the exams and still got As. If you know how to study, you will be fine. Offers so much extra credit on top of fair and relatively easy exams. Just read the book and go to class.
The structure of his online sec 10 class isn't great. Instead of live lectures, he posts 7-minute pre-recorded lectures which are basic summaries of the reading we were already doing. His "lectures" felt pointless and the lack of interaction means we can't analyze or discuss the readings. He tends to be vague and wordy. Easy but poorly structured.
He just really really does not do his job.
the hardest breadth professor I have encountered. Is very unaccommodating of the new transition onto remote education, and assigns a quiz/midterm every week. I have yet to bother to email him any questions as I hear from other students he could be quite rude and sarcastic and unhelpful. His lectures are unhelpful- prepare to self study.
I'm personally not a fan of copying slides & that is why I liked his lectures a lot. He shared small anecdotes to help you memorize the material. I hated is that sometimes the lecture did not align with the reading in the book and they were on the test. Pay a lot of attention to his lectures, a lot of test hints! Overall, a rigorous professor
The school seems to only have one professor who teaches a single course. All the students get stuck with him and fail. His online class is no better. Even with notes you will fail. 50 minutes for 2 essay questions on a midterm. No powerpoint or lecture notes to go on and the reading material is extremely difficult and almost impossible to finish
Honestly, his class was not as bad as I thought it would be compared to what everyone has said about Schmitt. I never read the textbook but still managed to do well on his exams. Just write down everything down he says during the lecture and spend a couple of days before the exam understanding the notes. His midterm guides and quizzes are extremely
This is the hardest, yet most knowledgable professor I've ever had. He doesn't use traditional slides but relays info just like a friendly conversation to teach. You must be willing to really grind for a decent grade and write EVERYTHING he says. Exams are incredibly tricky & he loves seeing students stress during them.
Make sure you pay attention and listen at all times during lecture. He will purposely say random phrases or place things around the class in the middle of lecture then ask you about them on the exams to stump you. His exams are awful so study hard and take super good notes. This is not an easy A or an easy B course, but its possible with HARD work.
He will teach you things that you will use forever A lot of students make fun of soc majors saying they dont learn anything useful, as a Business Econ major at UCR, I can honestly say Professor Schmitts class taught me more valuable life insight then any major related courses I took. Finally, the professor was very understanding, offered help! E
I took Schmitt Summer 2020 & luckily, it was the only class I had for the 2nd session. Thus, I was able to study harder & took DETAILED notes on the readings. The midterm is 45% of your grade & the final is 50%. The class was happy he offered extra credit because it helped at the end. I wouldn't take him again. He was unorganized in his lectures
He is super boring and makes the class unnecessarily difficult. The readings are dry and lectures don't help. Plus, no study guide either. Some people should not be teaching. I know that is not news, but taking his class sure reminded me of that.
Professor Schmitt has been understanding especially during this pandemic.
Long informative Lectures Timed Quizzes and Test.
He's a nice guy, but his teacher methods are mediocre. I'd recommend downloading OBS and recording the lectures because they're pretty boring, and he asks quiz/midterm/final questions based on the lectures. He posts lecture outlines, but they're really vague. Discussion only helped a little bit because only a few topics from the lecture are covered
This class was a disaster. Timed exams where you can't backtrack, lectures with little effort and makes questions on exams very wordy and hard to follow by. Material is simple and understandable, but his execution of this class is by far one of the most frustrating I've ever dealt with. Harsh, harsh grader.
He is very wordy with great intentions. He is difficult because he expects you to have a higher level vocabulary- it takes breaking down all the info he gives you to truly grasp it. Having a good TA helps ALOT. He is very smart and if you take good notes you should be fine. It helps that he records his online lectures.
He is a nice man, but as far as the teaching goes, his class is a bit too difficult for no reason. I'd definitely recommend some sort of study group to get you through. We basically got only one shot with his exams, and our entire grade depended on just 3 tests. His class was difficult to say the least.
Not an easy A class, but also not an impossible class either. I cant speak for previous semesters, but at least for fall semester, the professor has been very relaxed on grading. All tests are curved, so it really gave you a big cushion to make sure you do well in the class. The class goes through the entire book, so be prepared to read!
I was scared to take his class based on what I've heard, but he isn't as terrible as people make him appear. Maybe its diff cause its online. Yes, his course is challenging but these courses are also upper division. The readings are what got me through the exams. I wouldnt mind taking him again. He's a nice guy
Ive taken Schmitt at least 4 times in my time here and each time has made me anticipate the next, hes so sweet and understand. his classes are hard YES but hes kind
I dreaded this class because I did not learn much from the professor himself. His lectures are all over the place. Most of his powerpoint slide consists of one word or a phrase, but then the exam are true/false and multiple choice on certain sociology concepts. Do not take him. His tests are ridiculous and he isnt the best teacher.
Professor Schmitt isn't the best instructor. His lecture notes are so confusing and unorganized/all over the place. Most of his slides contain only one word and his tests are the same way. It is very difficult to understand the concepts or even understand the test question from a word or short phrase. Take this class with someone else!
Schmitts is wonderful. People say his slides are vague but that because you need to write down what he is saying, which is easier online and you can pause. He is always available during office hours and does a great job using real-world examples to compare topics. He is one of the Best profs I have had during covid, very understanding.
I have taken Schmitt three times and my first Sociology class was with him, SOC003. He's an amazing lecturer. This is what a college class is supposed to be like. You need to listen to what he is saying and take notes. I have received an A in every one of his classes by just attending his lectures and did not read any of the material required.
It sucks there are no homework assignments to cushion your grade. He is a tough grader. The midterm is made up of the exam itself and two written answers which must be at least a page each. You cannot go back on a question and he expects you to take only one minute or so on each question. A lot of it was on readings instead of lectures.
A lot of us were supposed to graduate this quarter myself included! I guess I won't after all. Thanks a lot Schmitt!
The reviews from the past scared me, but once actually taking his SOC 003 class it wasn't all that bad. You do have to take notes down on what he is saying because the slides do not tell very much, but that also makes sure you're paying attention to his lecture.
I was scared to take Schmitt b/c of his ratings, but he's not as bad as people make him out to be. Yeah, you're going to work for your grade, but isn't that expected of any student? His exams are straight-forward and he's actually really nice. I was able to pass from his lectures only by taking notes on what he was saying, not just the slides.
Although his test exam questions are all self-written and can be kinda wordy sometimes, Professor Schmitt is caring for his students when you need him. He understands that we as students go through unpredictable struggles as well and he tries to be super respectable about it. Might not be the easiest professor out there, but def. kind and caring.
I would not recommend him at all, can not even hear what he was talking about, so much reading so much unnecessary reading. The final is like 45% of the grade and the midterm is 35% however the test are timed and the test is are pretty hard 1-10 they are 8 being hard
Avoid at all costs, this was an absolutely miserable experience. You get graded on two real things, a mid term and the final, the discussion section is only 9% and there's a silly little quiz at the beginning worth 1%, you can study but that won't help since he asked the most niche questions possible.
Did not like the teacher at all! He isn't too bad of a teacher, but is so textbook heavy that it's hard to memorize the entire thing in order for the tests. Everything needs to be memorized, and midterm was almost six hours, with few results!! The only things that go in the gradebook are the midterm and final.
A horrible professor doesn't care about students and all his lectures are prerecorded making it hard to get in reach with him. The grades are based on Midterm and final heavily so no opportunity to make up for your grade. I would not recommend professor Schmitt to anyone at all.
One midterm, One final. Discussion attendance is mandatory. No homework or other point basis so your grade is how well you do on the tests. This seems very flawed. His presentation isn't thorough and can't be for the content expected from 13 chapters. Either you read sociology chapters thoroughly or else. Pre-recorded lectures.
For all you CSBA majors out there who have to take this class, beware its hard but because its only offered once a year, you have no choice but to take this guy. Way too many readings, midterm and final made up 85% of grade as of Winter 2022. Take it with a group of friends, you'll thank me later. Pay attention in lecture. Tests are hard af
Professor Schmitt is a good professor who clearly cares about his students. The bad reviews worried me before I started the class, however as long as you follow along, the class is relatively easy and straightforward. The tests are not hard as long as you study.
Your grade is based on 2 exams which are very difficult. If you bomb one, prepare to fail the class.
This class was 90% graded on 7 essay questions, a midterm, and a final. You have to do the reading and take notes or else you'll struggle on the exams. Be ready to do lots of reading.
This class was challenging and most of the class is the midterm and the final. You have to read the textbook in order to do well on the exams and write 7 essay questions on the take-home part of the midterm. It's best to take lots of notes on his lectures and the textbook if you want to get an A.
Professor Schmitt is pretty fair even if the quizzes/exams are challenging. There are a ton of readings, but if you just follow the text book, you'll be fine. He often gives hints for the answers and isn't really trying to trick you. Just be careful and study because there are not many chances to get your grade up beyond the midterm and final
He is honestly a great professor. His exams are lecture and textbook-based. All exams are ONLINE even tho it is an in-person lecture. A take-home midterm is also included. He only has critical words for lecture slides so make sure to take good notes. Go to office hours if needed and ask for help and he will help you. In the end, it is your choice.
Schmitt is extremely helpful if you go to his office hours or email. Each time Ive taken one of his classes I have learned a lot and you do have to put in the work to get a good grade but overall his classes are not that difficult and if you actually try you will get an A or B.
The overall class grade is based on the one midterm and the final, and the test questions are challenging. Discussion sections are mandatory and although lectures are not, I recommend going to them as the tests are heavily based on the lectures and the textbook. Be prepared to really work for your grade.
His lectures are confusing and his lecture slides provide practically no information. He does post them, however, they won't be much help. He has one quiz, the midterm, and the final which were all difficult and worded weirdly. The discussions are also mandatory. I don't recommend taking this professor.
His lectures are confusing and he provides little to no guidance with his slides. He does post them, however, they won't help you. The class is almost solely test based being that there is one quiz, the midterm, and the final. His exams are also so unnecessarily wordy and confusing. I don't recommend taking this professor if you can help it.
Dr. Schmitt is a superb professor and lecturer. He expands upon chapter notes clearly. Attendance and textbook reading are a must for his classes! To absorb the material and better prepare for tests and quizzes, don't expect his powerpoints to explain everything. He is pleasant to talk with and provides convenient office hours for students.
The professor is chill, but when it comes to attending the lectures, his lecture notes don't give too much information that can help you out with the quiz, midterm, take home component that goes with the midterm and the final. I find his class to be very difficult and stressful because of how little information he gives you. Be prepared to read.
Reading is mandatory to be up to speed in the lecture. The ppts aren't very detailed, as he elaborates more verbally and gives few assignments. Midterm and Final are very lecture and reading based. Overall not a difficult class. If the effort is put in, you can achieve an A or B.
Never really did the readings for his class because most exams and quizzes are lecture-based so as long as you can write down most of the things he says during lecture, you are pretty set for the exams. The only time I tried to read was for the TA's discussions. He is really good at lectures and he goes at a good pace for you to take notes.
If you do the readings and pay attention in lecture, it should be a breeze. The lecture slides are not helpful. He only puts the topic of conversation up there so you need to be at lectures and take notes of what he SAYS.
Grades are based off of assessments (midterm, final) so make sure you read your materials and understand it. I didn't attend most of the lectures and did fine but if you need to listen to learn you should def go. If not just read the textbook and you'll be fine! The assessments were all online but still just make sure you know what you should.
I recommend this class. It was super easy and fun and the content is engaging. Consists of 1 quiz, 1 midterm, 1 written midterm portion, and a final. ALL ONLINE.
Anything he lectures on/anything in the assigned readings can be on the exam, and there aren't many things you are graded on. You get a quiz, an awful midterm (so long), a little extra credit, and a final. Go to every lecture, he has random things from lectures on the tests (ex. the word "button") and the exam questions are very difficult.
The professor himself was amazing! you can tell he loves what he teaches! - Attendance NOT mandatory. - Be ready to read! - 1 Quiz with Multiple choice and a writing portion + Final was all Multiple choice (ALL ONLINE). - His lectures though had most of the time pictures instead of notes to write down. - 1 movie day which will be on the Final.
I know that most soc students either love or hate this professor, but personally, as someone with a short attention span, his lecture style kept me engaged with concise/image-focused powerpoints and related anecdotes. Some might call his teaching style a bit disorganized but I enjoyed his lectures. I took his class winter 2023.
loved both classes i had with him! super easy class for me!
I loved listening to these lectures. He is a super kind man and has a lot of care for the topics he teaches. I wouldn't say attendance is mandatory but he does sometimes throw in weird things during lectures that will appear on tests (code words, images). All of our quizzes, midterms, and final were online.
Professor Schmitt was a great professor. He teaches Sociology well and all that comes with. All his exams are take home exams and you are given a couple hours to complete. Definitely attend lectures because, it helps with the tests. Overall he was super caring and you can tell he cared for his students. Easy 8 am class.
Boring lectures, drops random midterm/final answers in lectures. Tests were super hard for me. Had to do so much reading. Harder than my actual major courses. Don't take this ged.
The best Sociology professor, I've taken classes with professor Schmitt 5 times(had 2 classes with him this quarter) at my time at UCR and he's up there at the top. He's very kind and as long as you attend lecture and listen to what he says you will pass the class. All your tests are online and pretty straight forward all based off of lecture.
That's my biggest mistake I made for 2024 Fall quarter without checking RMP of this professor and registered his class. Even you carefully check the text book, exams are very difficult. In addition, the grading system is horrible. Mid term is 30% and final is 40%.
good person but not a good professor. final grade is only made up of quizzes/ midterm/ final (all multiple choice/ timed). u take quizzes online but it's v difficult to pass them bc of the confusing wording. attendance isn't mandatory but he doesn't post notes so u have to attend to pass. avoid taking if u can bc it's not an easy A class.
He is a very chill and seemingly nice guy, however he is a tough grader. I would say if he offers extra credit DO IT. I tried to communicate to him how I was unsure on how to study, several times, but to no avail. That was my biggest issue. I got 100 in discussion, went to mostly all lectures + sat in front, read + took notes on book. still failed
Grading is unclear and challenging. Lectures feel pointless as little is taught. He calculates part of your midterm score using random visuals or phrases. Grades rely on two online tests, accessible but requiring extensive study as they're ambiguous and lack curves. This GE course was harder than my major classes.
Long lectures, does not convey material clearly. Exams are not from his lectures but rather from the book. More than half the class dropped the course.
Your grade mostly depends on your midterm and final grades. Not even the extra credit was helpful.
I took this professor for soc1 and my experience was roughly the same. He is a very nice guy but personally, his teaching style does not work for me. His slides are not very helpful & he does not touch on the things we talk about in discussion. However, I recommend going to lecture because he will talk about things exclusively in lecture.
I had Schmitt for four years in undergrad & I would feel frustrated that his test didn't align with what he taught in lecture. I didn't think much of it until a friend also had his class & mentioned that his exams wasn't relevant to lecture. I regret taking his classes bc I attended every lecture & didn't see much of what was taught on the exam.
Very sweet guy, but doesn't teach very good. His slides and his way of teaching isn't the most understanding as I feel as it disorganized. Lot of the questions on his test are really hard, and some weren't even in the textbook or slides, on top of that, the class is graded mainly by midterm and final as it's 40 and percent.
I had Professor Schmitt for two courses already. Soc 001 and Soc 003 this winter quarter. He dropped hints for those who attended lectures but the only thing is, his exams are nothing like his lectures. You might as well read the textbook and memorize it because that's what it is based on. He is very kind but if you go up after class, he's sassy :)
Tough grader. Exams are online, but extremely difficult, long, and timed. The questions are confusing and really make you second guess yourself. I would recommend doing all of the readings before class and attending all lectures as his exams are lecture heavy. Also, I would not recommend taking two of his classes during the same quarter.
I would not take again
