Absolutly excellent. Very tough material, but tries very hard to help you get through it if you're willing to work with him. Personable, negotiates between his agenda and student interests. Hard, but life-changingly good.
Very challenging class. If you do not like a challenge do not take. Very interresting and gets you thinking. Most of class is lecture and blackboard relatated stuff. I would definitly recommend to everyone.
Would never take this class..and I DON'T recommend it either.. with a PHD he still has no idea what he's talkn about and doesn't make any sense...definately needs to improve teaching skillssssss

Warning:He doesn't explain things clearly and does not know how to grade. If you take this class get ready to lower your writing standards in order to get a good grade because he doesn't know what an academically sound paper is. Even if you think you know you'll end up with a C at best anyway!

Why is this guy teaching? I think he needs teaching himself, very disorganized.Just make sure you write all the papers & you'll pass.
Very challenging, but this man knows what he is talking about. His methods are unconventional, but are designed to let the students take control of their education, and really learn something. Not easy work, much motivation is necessary, but this is one of the best teachers at NEIU.
A GREAT teacher! I've had very few writing professors who were good, but Schroeder definitely is. If you're looking for an easy A, go somewhere else. If you like a challenge, take his class -- you won't be disappointed.
I feel that he is one of the best teachers that we have. He goes out of the way to help you. He teaches writing in a interesting way. I learn a lot about writing in his class. Yeah its hard but its worth the struggle. He likes to meet one on one and when you are in his office he is nice helpful
He seemed ok and had different grading systems, but he writes very sloppy on the board and he talks very fast. It's difficult to understand what he means because he doen't take a lot of time for new ideas. very difficult grader on papers. I've always considered myself a good writer, but not to him
this teacher is helpful.

I love English and he nearly killed it. Does not explain things well. Would not recommend him unless 1) you think extremely abstract (de-teach yourself anything you ever knew in English) 2) Have loads of time 3) Are a native speaker in English AND love it so much as to die for it
Nice guy, very smart. But a bit arrogant about his knowledge, smug even. Never satisfied. Expect to rewrite everything 3 times. Tough grader. Does not explain things well. Should probably stick to teaching Graduate classes only.
Gotta give this guy a chance. Not a traditional English class. Content has merit, he's helpful if you ask for it. Tough grader, but recognizes effort and hard work. Challenging but rewarding, not for slackers.
Overall, I didn't enjoy the class...I felt like he monopolized conversation rather than hand it to students. Also, I sensed he didn't value/take seriously a lot of what students said.
not very helpful at all
He's really critcal about writing. I had him for literature and all my assignments were based on my writing. But he is good with extending deadlines.
mean, hard, crabby
The class seemed like it would be interesting at first and that he made it seem like he wanted the students to be successful. There was a huge workload and assingments were unclear a lot, even after explanation. Very difficult grader.
Understanding his students is not this professors strong point. I enjoyed his course and learned a lot from it. But also saw the frustration it brought to many of his students including me at times. A lot of people cried over his classes.
This was a very difficult class for me, but i ended up getting a good grade. The reason for that was because i kept fixing the writings i did. Have your classmates read your work, have him read your work..etc. Anyways, i heard he is really well at teaching upper level courses cause he has so much knowledge. But hard with lower lever courses.
The professor is insane and out of this world. His expectations from his students is too much, and every assignment was another puzzle, without much explainations. Dont expect to get a good grade even if you work your butt off for his class. Believe me I suffered, worked hard, and didnt get a good grade. Dont take! Avoid!
recommend taking this class only if u want to learn something. if u are not willing to put time and effort into the assignment then dont take this professor. in the long run u will walk away from this class with so much knowlegde. my only problem with him was that he doesnt explain the asiignment much, but he is willing to work with u if u r also
This class is time consuming, but is worth the money. Make sure to follow the rubrix for the grade you desire. I learned a great deal about writing. Tough teacher, but fair.
Fantastic teacher. I learned a lot about writing and def. increased my skills. He has a student-directed classroom and you will have to work hard, but if you do, you can get a good grade. He is very available for help, you just have to ask for it. One of the best profs at NEIU. Worth all the effort his class demands.
I thought he was going to be a great teacher at first because he had open ideas about grading, but that was the only good thing about the class. I think the problem might be that he doesn't know how to bring his teaching down to the 200 level. Very hard grader either way. Do not take him unless you are an English major then he might be fine Stay away!
He is very strict. You will have to work to pass the class. As are not easy at all. However, he has a very organized and structured way of teaching. He wants you to learn, but you have to be willing to put in all your effort. Great teacher, just not an easy one.
He was very unhelpful, he seemed more concerned into indoctrinating everyone into the classroom into his way of thinking rather than keep an open mind. He teaches as if his class is the only thing that exists within your life, and he seems to have a touch of arrogance in his voice while teaching. This prof should only teach grad lvl in my opinion.
Difficult instructor. Short on patience. Hard to understand and doesn't repeat pertinent information. Makes U leery to approach him and ask questions. Teaching style much too complex for English 101. A lot of crickets heard throughout his class. I withdrew after 6 weeks... Wish I would've dropped sooner. Should stick to Eng majors/grad students
Very hard. You must be completely dedicated to this class and this class only if you want a good grade. He seems to be extremely knowledgable but too serious for a 100 level course. I would not recommend him for a general course, but definitely for english majors and higher level courses.
well lets see here....the worst teacher, the nicest person. if your interested in the class dont take him, if your not interested in the class dont take him (its very simple) im not upset while writing this, it is a bunch of people giving you a red warning flag..he is really a bad teacher..have a fantastic day and good luck finding a professor =)
hes a very nice person but very UNCLEAR in is his explanations. there is a medium workload but it is hard to tell what he is asking for. i wouldnt recomend him.
This professor is difficult to read. His expectations are vague because he wants you to set your own for yourself. He expects a lot of work, but so long as you put time into it he'll give you the good grade. He knows the importance of writing and reading and wants to show his students the importance. Great professor, I took him twice and loved it!
bad teacher, arrogant, not helpful, very unclear about what he wants. would not recommend him for any class.
A LOT of work and he is very unclear. I had no clue of what was going on during the whole semester. If you are very interested in ENG then he is great I guess.I would not recommend him even though he is nice and some what funny.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! does not know how to teach and should not teach period! very unclear and wants too much for a gen ed course DO NOT TAKE
easy-going
Was a great teacher for a grad class. Does a good job challenging students. Will push you to make your on conclusions, but it will be tough.
He is a little creepy. He assigns about four times as much HW as other professors who teach World of Fiction. He seems to be more interested in the quantity of work over the quality of work.
Rollercoaster! You are given a syllbus the very first day so you know all the work that is ahead, but it's not clear how to achieve these goals until they are almost due. The work is not hard, understanding the professors goal is difficult. Nice guy, but I prefer a more structured teaching style.
I felt the need to create an account just to share how awful this guy is. Only C I have received at Northeastern adn it's not because of effort. Schroeder is unclear and not helpful at at all. Stay away if possible.
Show up to class because if you miss anything, you might fail. His teaching method is very unorthodox and he'll try to push you past all limits. See him during office hours if you have any questions. That seems to be the only way to sort things out. Do your work and show you care otherwise.
I like some others had to create and account just to write a review on this professor. Not only does he deserve it, it has to be done. If you want to get an A take another professor. His lack of communication is horrible. He has the worst office hours. Its unacceptable to be a professor and not check email.
Professor Schroeder has a lot of knowledge on literacy but does not know how to teach. he does not know how to communicate and when asked a question he likes to go around it and sometimes laughs and nodds his head without answering the question. in my opinion he wants to make his students feel stupid, if you decide to take him I wish you good luck.
I was forced into taking this class because it is a requirement and was warned by many to NOT take him but I had to because the university didnt offer another professor that taught that course. he was so bad that everyone that didnt drop the course ended up getting an incomplete and finished the course with another professor the next semester.
My first exposure to him was this class, which was co-taught with Libretti. He is far more focused than Libretti, which made the dynamic of the class more interesting. As he was the one who focused on my work, he was always willing to offer advice and reading materials that would help. He has high expectations, but that's actually a good thing.
Terrible. His e-mails, lectures, assignments, etc. all sound like gibberish. I'm three weeks into the class and I still have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing. I'm not learning anything. You've been warned - this comes from a very liberal, understanding 4.0 senior. Never take him.
I know Schroeder is difficult and really challenging, but I suggest going to see him during his office hours and explaining to him truthfully just what you don't understand. He isn't the best at communicating, but believe me, he knows literacy better than anyone else I have ever met. If you want to learn, take a Schroeder class.
I am a great student. He is the worst professor I have ever had. He is completely unclear and expects professional level writing within a very short time frame. He has zero structure to his class. He actually got into an argument with me about the definition of irony, which is not what my original point was at all. I should have dropped this class.
He is VERY unclear, and hard to understand. This was a terrible class. He's smart and knows his stuff, but can't TEACH. A smart person, NOT a smart teacher. Only way you'll get help is by going to see him during office hours, but then what's the point of the class? We don't all have time to go after class to understand what SHOULD'VE been CLEAR!
I took him my first semester and boy do I regret it. He thinks very differently and speaks in mono-tone, causing most students to space out. The way he answers questions makes students even more confused. More than 3/4 of the class dropped his course, and the rest ended up taking an Incomplete after discovering most would fail.
Don't take his classes. They're not clear whatsoever. I didn't get anything from his class but confusion!
Wrote a 5 page paper and got an F on it... not worth it. Writing over 3 pages per project just to get a C? He never gives out A's on projects. If you want your GPA to drop, then take this course..otherwise stay away.
OK so first this guy is way too exited about drama soooo... it's kind of weird. Second he talks way too much so on Thursdays we are supposed to be a work day, but no he just talks and talks and talks. Also when he answers a student's question he takes about 40 minutes to answer it. So if you don't want to get frustrated do't take his class.
He's really unclear. He assigns papers that don't really make sense and when he explains something no one gets what he is trying to say. If you decide to take his class do the portfolio instead of the grades. It gives you a lot more time
he is very educated. which is why many students have trouble understanding what he is saying. however, he actually gives you a lot of freedom to read and write about whatever it is you like. rather than giving you a topic and telling you to write a 10 page paper about it, you chose. he guides you through it. i got an A and did portfolio. good luck
His classes are very dry and unclear. It's a HUGE challenge. The GEN ED classes feel more like Doctoral Classes. If you enjoy English you may enjoy his class and the challenges he presents but if you're simply fulfilling a requirement, DONT TAKE HIS CLASS.
This is a horrible class. He is unclear and very difficult. It didn't feel like a gen ed class. It was really hard and required a lot of work. He lacked empathy And told me mid semester to drop the class and take it over in the fall.
Prof. Schroeder is one of the best. If you are willing to learn and keep up with the assignments, he is more than willing to help you. I was reluctant to take him because of others’ reviews, but I am glad I disregarded them. He is brilliant and not as harsh as others believe. If you like challenges I recommend you take his class. I learned a lot.
Schroeder is a fabulous teacher! He prepares a tough semester, but you will come out having learned considered many important concepts and ideas. Although when taking his classes it will be your responsibility to make personal deadlines to ensure your work gets done on time, If you ever get overwhelmed by the work load, he will listen and help.
He is really not as bad as people make him seem! I am glad I didn't pay attention to the reviews and just took his class. His class is actually quite simple and straightforward compared to some other English classes. The first exam was taken online, there are 3 short essays, and one final exam. Easy!
The reviews are right, he's brilliant but can't teach. He is unclear on what he wants. I would go on D2L to read the rubric on what to do, type my draft, have him proofread it and he would give me critical feedback and expectations for the paper that wasn't in the rubric. Within last month of the semester I went to his office hours about 15 times
Hes a smart professor but does not know how to teach. His rubrics make no sense. He speaks to his freshman students in a Gen ED class like he would be talking to graduate students.
I hate this guy. He doesn't know what he wants. He'll say "look at the rubric" but it's like a foreign language and totally unclear. He's a smart guy but should not be teaching 100 level courses. I'm glad the English dept. stopped scheduling him for ENG 101 and 102. He should only be teaching grad students.
Nice guy, but he does not tell you what he wants in terms of the assignments he gives out. If you work hard and put in the effort, you should get a decent grade.
Uses the start of the semester to deliberate on topics we're supposed to have knowledge on in order to complete assignments in the end of the semester. The assignments are LENGTHY and require lots of time & info. U wont know if youre doing good or bad in the class until it's too late. I wont get my first grade until the End. Wont be able to DROP
Plain and simple. If you don't HAVE to take him, DON'T take him. I was scared halfway through the course because I did not know what was going on in class. Everyone in the class was confused. One of the worst teachers I have ever had.
As someone who is majoring in education, I stand in awe of just how poor this professor is at teaching. He is astonishingly vague when explaining assignments and has expectations that will almost always go unmet because you will have no idea what he wants. I don't find him as intelligent as I do pedantic and dull, though I'm sure he would disagree.
Hi everyone. Professor Schroeder is a great professor. Don't listen to the haters. After getting through this class you will find that it has benefitted you as a writer, reader and researcher. Some tips to get a good grade are to take interest in the class, come, take good notes and meet the professor as much as you can to discuss any issues.
Not a fan of the class, nothing particularly wrong with Schroeder, he's just not super charismatic or anything
I am an exceptional student and this guy is going to be the reason I don't get a 4.0 this semester. He gives you HALF credit on assignments for doing what he asked for and full credit for "going above and beyond" even though he doesn't specify what that even means. Don't take his class,
This guy is brilliant so obviously his class is going to be hard. He is a tough grader and you will have a lot of reading. His classes are interesting and makes you think. I like that he learns along the way with you, it doesnt feel like he is talking at you.
WOULD NOT RECOMMEND. everything he says is extremely vague. entire class left confused every day. No one knew what was going on, or what needed to be done for assignments. Have gone for one on one help, still extremely vague and unhelpful. asks for rough draft, expects a fully completed paper or you'll get a 6/10.
Hes an amazing professor.. Ive got 4.0 gpa and am a great student.. I bought all the plays and did all the work on time. His over want for big assignments are unclear. He grades unrealistically and its unfair. I worked a lot in this class and really enjoyed it. Just wouldve been better not with him
He would randomly made rude comments to me and called me out for being on my phone for 5 seconds just to add a new HW assignment in my agenda. I accidentally missed ONE deadline and he didn't let me submit the paper that night so I got a 0 on it and ended the class with a B. Grading criteria isn't clear but feedback is somewhat helpful. Don't do it
There's a lot of reading, but the course was very intellectually rewarding and the lectures were great. He helps you improve your writing skills with high quality feedback. Come to class prepared because he does a lot of cold calling on people, which can be embarrassing and difficult if you have anxiety or difficulty paying attention.
Professor Schroeder is extremely vague with all of his assignments. Nobody really had any idea what was going on... He only gives you full credit if you do MORE than what is asked and assigned. I wouldn't recommend this class if you don't need it, and I wouldn't recommend Professor Schroeder. Seems like a nice dude but overall, awful experience :/
I dont understand the bad reviews he receives. He is an awesome teacher! He is actually straight forward; I dont think he can make himself anymore clearer. He is extremely intelligent; you will definitely finish the course more knowledgeable because he really makes you think. I recommend him because he knows what he is talking about. :)
He's inaccessible, dances around answers, misinterprets everything said, repeatedly asks to "elaborate" simply statements, unaccommodating, monotonous, and *BEWARE: HE IS UNCLEAR!* His rubric, grading, instruction, and assigned readings will boggle your mind until you give up. This is a pre-req, not a graduate class... Not worth it, even with an A.
This professor didn't seem to prepare anything for any class. We would either spend the class analyzing textbook reading that was assigned or he would read off his poorly done slide show. Spent half of every class by stalling to ask us if we had any questions (about ANYTHING, even not pertaining to the class) and proceeded to answer his own.
Professor Schroeder likes to answer questions with questions. He expects you to understand him, but he will be surprised when you ask him to look at things from your perspective. He never wants to accept that not everyone thinks or believes the things he does. Till now I have no idea what those central questions he always talking about.
He is prejudice and discriminated against my disability. VERY ARROGANT.
Do not sit in the front unless you want to be cold called
I think that this is one of the best professors I've had. There definitely was A LOT of reading and the assignments can be pretty intense. However, he gives very specific outlines on what he expects. He actually encourages getting help so much that one of the assignments are to meet with him in his office hours or to meet with a tutor.
I took him my last semester during the fall. He is a nice person. The only thing that I did not like is how he would push a topic or question more. He wants you to elaborate your answers. He likes to call on people especially the people who mostly sits in the back or at the front. There are many readings, so be prepared to discuss in class.
One of the best professors I've encountered in my life. He truly cares about his students. He's super helpful and willing to review drafts, help clarify questions, etc. during attend office hours.
honestly he's a nice guy he just doesn't like to "hinder creativity" so he's not always very clear with his expectations. as long as you participate in class you'll be more than okay. take good notes during the few lecture days as the tests are open note and relate to the lectures heavily!
He hardly gives any directions on how he wants you to write the essays. He redirects students' simple questions by making it a 5-minute discussion on how there are two answers to the question. Take notes on his slides and the entrance slips because you'll need them for the two exams. One thing I liked was the dissuasion of critics' perspectives.
This has to be the worst professor I've ever had. If you have an personal issues he does not care, you might as well drop the course. This guy is not (dis)ability friendly! You could almost die and he wouldn't care. Not to mention he makes no sense. Also he says the n-word in class??
