Toher's courses are quite challenging, but unlike any chemistry class out there. He believes in relating text material (often brings his own) to real world examples that reinforce learning. He is so full of energy and passion that you'll never forget major chemistry principles with the figurative fireworks of breaking chalk! and inspired teaching!

This is the only professor I've had who actually knows how to teach and make chemistry fun (his enthusiasm is infectious!) and understandable. Having had some awful science instructors who can't teach and don't care about students, people slamming Prof. Toher's teaching obviously have no basis for comparison and wield retaliatory agendas-Period.

Good guy. Brings energy to classes, day and night. Hard material. Realizes that he expects is almost too much and scales grades that way. Helpful in and out of class, answers emails daily. Read the book and his handouts and bright students will do well. Do not waste time if you jsut want an A for an easy requirement. YOU WILL NOT FIND IT HERE.

Toher is an incredible professor. He's thorough, energetic, and interesting. His lectures are dense, but you won't fall asleep. Toher keeps generous office hours, and posts tons of resources/solutions online. My boy's tests are said to be harder than other Gen Chem 2 profs, but the curves are generous. I'd recommend Toher to any student for Chem 2.

If you show up to every class, do the smartworks without using chegg, and stay awake through lectures you will 100% get a good grade in the class. Miss a few classes and it gets very hard to catch up, very quickly. Good teacher, nice guy, but his lectures are tough because he absolutely flies through material sometimes.

Very passionate, but clearly should not be teaching freshman chemistry. His preparation for each class is well above average, but unless you're able to stay lazer-focused for over an hour of lecturing three days a week, you won't get a good grade without dozens of hours of studying before every midterm. The tests are much harder than the homework.

A smart professor who doesnt joke around. I took the hybrid class because I need the credits by next year and had no choice for any other course. He is very understanding of the fact that you are new to the subject, but he treats you as if youre going to be a chemistry major. Only take his class if youre willing to put in the work!

Course goes by very quickly, so alot of work needs to be put in outside the course. His slides are everything you need. Quizzes were easy. Final exam covered all content, but easy questions. The midterms were tough and required solid understanding and a ton of practice. His HW grade and extra credits helped.

his lectures are great and he explains concepts thoroughly and well. this year, he decided to make the class a lot harder. the midterms were a lot harder than past ones. in the end, he rushed through nuclear chemistry and orgo. the only thing i have to complain about him is the inconsistencies between lectures and exams. do supplemental problems!

You are expected to attend his lecture regularly to do well on exams. He has questions every class; this helps you to learn the materials, remind you to study every day, not wait until the night before the exam to cram. His exams are a little hard, but gives extra points. His lectures will prep you well for the exams and future CHEM courses too.

Strongly advise against taking a class with Toher unless you are a chemistry whiz already and can spend every minute of the day completing assignments. Very hard grader, regardless of your efforts, and the material is difficult to grasp given his lecture style. Tests are almost impossible and way too long (4+ hours).

he's very nice. however, i think especially with the online format, it doesn't go so well. he uploads his pre-recorded lectures which is nice, but the way he speaks is super confusing. i feel like sometimes he focuses way too much on theory rather than practical. his exams are HARD, way way harder than quizzes!! they set up false expectations.

Professor Toher's Gen Chem 2 course is probably the hardest class I've ever taken at Northeastern. Given the pandemic and everything being online, you would think class wouldn't be awfully difficult. But it was. Unless you're a chemistry whiz I would not recommend Toher's class. Be ready to spend hours and hours a week studying just to barely pass.

Toher is a nice guy, but this was probably the most challenging class I have ever taken. It was effectively two semesters of information crammed into one semester. The lectures went by so fast that it was essentially impossible to take notes, so I had to spend hours outside of class to take them. The three midterms and final are all very difficult.

For an already hard class, he makes it harder. He spends a lot of time reviewing HS chem and then flies through the hard concepts. We were behind the entire semester, and the only saving grace is the extra credit. The only way you're getting an A is if you took AP Chem in high school, and there is a lot of homework.

I had to drop Toher's class after two months. Chem 1 was in essence a Chem 2 class hidden behind course code 1100. Also... he's not suited for an online format. The lectures were videos fine but there's no opportunity to ask questions in real-time. We were doing advanced chemistry in week 2.

I had Professor Toher for gen chem 1 in the fall and I will say three things: he gives A LOT of assignments, his assignments are very tough, but he is a great professor. He knows how to teach the material in an effective manner and really helped me get through gen chem 1. Overall, if you put in the work, you will be well prepared for future classes

Dr. Toher is a very accomplished chemist who is extremely passionate about his work. He is incredibly intelligent about chemistry but has 0 interpersonal skills.
