She taught a 5 classes for Schiller while I had him. She's a nice person, but her lecturing style is pretty inefficient. Sticks too many examples in, so by the time she's done, you forget what she was talking about. Stands around waiting for answers to questions when no one has time to process the info. Hopefully, she's improved.
Dr. Strong wants you to succeed and she's willing to help you. She grades fairly, but watch out for her exams, they're tough. Took the summer course, it was intense. Go to lecture, memorize ALL the details on PowerPoint slides. Ace the quizzes & lab stuff to pad your grade against the tests, and plan on a few hours a day studying.
She's a very reasonable teacher. I aced the first 3 exams and dropped the 4. I did this by making my own study guides from each chapter and incorporating the information from her powerpoints. Lab is easy and helps out with your grade especially for me since I only aced half my lecture quizzes.
Dr. Strong explains just about every concept of Biology clearly, as she always somehow relates it to everyday interactions or creates a method to make things easier to remember. She's extremely enthusiastic about Biology, which gets quite contagious! She also has an aura that makes you unafraid to approach her if you don't understand the lecture.
Nice person BUT PPTs make no sense. Theyre not in an order you can follow, pictures dont correlate with the notes, her bullets are phrases that remind her what she wants to go over while lecturing but make absolutely no sense to anyone going back over them. Exams are purposefully tricky.
Christy Strong is the epitome of a TERRIBLE professor. I can not say a single good thing about her. She does not know what she is talking about and requires the students to spend weeks deciphering every powerpoint by searching for every single thing online. In short, if you care about learning DO NOT TAKE CHRISTY STRONG!
Got an A but learned absolutely nothing. She tests on completely USELESS info. Any sane person would order PPTs-- History, Virus introcharacteristics (genome type, viral proteins, etc), Viral Entry, Transcription, Replication, Transcription, Viral exit, THEN go into types of vaccines, cures, etc. Skipping so much detail only makes it confusing
She basically just looks up journal articles and makes a powerpoint out of them, then reads them to the class trying to pretend like she knows what shes talking about. Makes so many mistakes that the students have started to correct her. Exams are more like solving a puzzle that is "Dr" Strongs mind, than actually testing important information
I was really excited to take this class when I signed up for it but after the barrel of alphabet soup that she threw at us, I regretted the decision wholeheartedly. She wants you to know the tiniest details about the genes and proteins while she has a hard time even reading her own powerpoint presentation. SHE LOVES THROWING CURVEBALL QUESTIONS.
She tends to spend a lot of time on minor details and then rushes through important concepts. Her tests are HARD and she loves trick questions. I spent so much time trying to memorize every geneprotein name so that I could correctly answer the trick questions that I feel like I didn't actually learn much about the overall concepts of virology.
The homework is easy, online, and helps your grade! Only tests on material presented in class. Allows handwritten cheatsheet for EVERY exam. Very clear and upfront about what will be on the tests. Doesn't take attendance but sometimes will give an extra point for showing up.
Dr. Strong is an awesome teacher. Definitely knows what she's talking about and she can explain things in ways that make it easy to understand. However, her tests are rough. She LOVES trick questions. Make sure you read EVERY WORD in both the question and answer. often times, the info would be correct, but pertaining to the wrong virus.
memorize everything she puts in front of you EVERYTHING names, #s, alternate names. is what shes saying sounds important? it WONT be on your test. shell give you nothing but trick questions where itll all sound legit BUT shes changed a single letter or # in the protein name. knows her stuff cant test at all. theyre all random minuscule details
Waste of time if you actually want to learn something. Her tests are based solely on your ability to memorize obscure proteins and random facts she barely even mentions in class. And her lectures are all over the place. Really disappointed and was excited for this class. The kahoots are fun but that's the only positive thing about her class.
Dr. Strong's tests are tricky and can be tough for some people if you are not good at memorizing but keep in mind that this is a 400 level science course. If you want to get an A in the class, then you have to put work into it. Tests are everything from her ppts, including graphs, tiny details on the bottom of a slide, and all the protein names.
4 exams worth 90% and attendance worth 10%. I agree with the trick questions and memorizing, but it's not that bad. If you're good at memorizing, then you're fine like most bio courses anyway. Study everyday to memorize her slides. She's a nice professor and she always emphasize how she wants to help you, but her tests are tough regardless of help.
I loved taking her class. Most of the stuff was stuff I learned back in AP Biology, but it was a nice refresher. Plus, it was a pre-req, haha. She was there when I needed her, her tests are right off of the lectures and slides, and she does a review session right before the exam. I failed the first, got an A on the last 2 tests and the final. :)
I had been told 189 was notoriously difficult, but she made everything pretty clear. You really need to do the MasteringBiology assignments, and at least read the lectures if you don't go. The exam reviews are also posted online, but you want attend to be part of the process- she let's you have a say in the topics that might make the test.
Dr. Strong is an amazing teacher for BIOL 189. Her PowerPoint lectures highlight everything you need to know for the exam. Do not skip her lectures, because she has such a fun and interactive way of making difficult concepts stick to your head. Her exams questions are often made by students, and she gives out extra credit on certain days of class.
Half the class fails or gets D's and the other half who pass have already taken a higher level bio. It has created a loss of confidence in my ability to learn and yet have put in twice as many hours a normal student should for any one class. Her tests are designed to trick you so no matter if you know material or not you will fail in some way.
Dr. Strong was phenomenal. Her witty and animated personality made the lectures quite entertaining. There was alot of work involved, but everything aided in understanding the material prior to testing. The kahoot quiz game also made coming to class fun. Also, not a day went by where we did not receive emails to inform us about class material.
I took Dr. Strong over the summer and it was an easy A. Her tests are hard to fail, many of her questions are bolded in red on her lecture powerpoints, which she provides for you to look at whenever you want. She is approachable and knowledgeable. She also responds quickly to emails and gives out extra credit at the end of the semester.
Her lectures are basically her tests, so don't skip class. I never missed a lecture and I missed five question combined on the last three tests.
Her tests are purposefully TRICKY. PPTs are NOT ORGANIZED AT ALL and extremely hard to follow. Who skips DNA replication, covers translation, and THEN goes over transcription. Even I know it's replication -- transcription -- translation. She makes too many jokes and analogies in class about material and that personally confuses me.
She is NOT a tricky teacher like some may claim. Lectures are boring but she explains everything well. Tests are straightforward for the most part. Go into her office hours and she will gladly help you with a smile. Just show up, pay attention to lectures, use the book to help you, complete the homework assignments & you will get a good grade.
This class made me cry.
she was helpful but the powerpionts in the lectures weren't helpful for the tests
Lectures are off the book and clear. I don't think I've understood biology better before. Definitely a lot of material and requires a lot of your time.
This is a tough class for most students who are not interested in biology. Dr. Strong comes off as a hard-ass, but she honestly just wants you to pass. A lot of the students fail her courses because they don't want to put in the work for it. I honestly enjoy Dr. Strong class even though I struggled with it, I highly respect her.
We have weekly homework assignments, not too hard with the help of the textbook and internet. Her tests are very tough. We cover a lot during class and its hard to remember everything. Your test grades really depend on how well you study.
The only way you could possible fail this class is if you never did the hw & never reviewed the lecture powerpoints. I was so scared to take this class because of all the "This class is so hard" rumors, but it wasn't hard at all. This class was by far one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken at UNLV & I don't even like science.
It amazes me how someone can teach hundreds of students in such an interesting, fun way. Dr. Strong truly is amazing. She gives real-world type examples during her lectures so you can easily relate to them & it makes understanding biology soo much easier. She includes alotta humor in her lectures too. Take her & only her! You won't regret it!
Dr. Strong gives exceptional lectures, but the exams can be difficult. Show up to class and you'll pass
Dr. Strong is very challenging but knows her stuff! She's really intelligent and passionate on the subject. She's hilarious and makes class fun but doesn't take BS from anyone. The tests are tough so study study study! Exams worth 60% of your grade!! Do the homework and do good in lab, don't skip and you'll for sure pass!
Whoa, what a semester. Bio 189 is a hard class to begin with, but I think Dr. Strong is the best professor to have for it. She is EXTREMELY intimidating, but her tests are pretty clear cut and they follow the lectures exactly. Just do your online homework, follow her lectures, and you should pass. Pretty simple, even if bio is not your subject.
Dr. Strong's class is tough, but she's probably the best teacher for Biol189. She provides her lecture powerpoints which are useful when test time comes around. The course wasn't easy. The textbook was my savior because if I didn't comprehend lecture, then it was there for reinforcement. Just make sure to pay attention, read, and take notes!
Probably the most stressful class I had this semester when it shouldn't have been. I do appreciate all that she has taught me however. Expect online homework every week due Mondays. Tests are super tricky so make sure to study her power points. READ YOUR CHAPTERS PRIOR TO LECTURE it will help you comprehend way more. Lab helps way more than u think
Every thing on her tests has been said in the lecture. She knows the material and teaches it will. She loves trick questions, so read carefully, but she is not out to fail her students. Overall, I would highly recommend her.
Expect to go to class everyday. she gives answers only in class that are on the test. and her powerpoints aren't easy to study on your own. she is really clear and detailed which made it easier to learn, but her patience is a little low. i refer her because she actually wants her students to pass. don't expect her to round your grade though.
I really liked her, she's one of those teachers that even speak really well in an auditorium and I never got bored because it was always interesting which was great since I usually zone out 40% of the time
Run away as far and as fast as you can!!
I love Dr. Strong! She is very clear on what to expect in the class. Be prepared to study, attend every class and read the textbook if you want an A. 3 Exams and a Final --Final is cumulative. She drops lowest test grade. Uses i-clicker every class so easy 5 points each class. Homework is through Mastering Biology. She encourages you to seek help.
Best Biology teacher I've had at this school. Compared to other classes and teachers, this class was an easy A. She is extremely smart. She's approachable and really nice. HW can be a pain, but it is really helpful. Just pay attention and study the slides. Tests were pretty easy and to the point. Out of all my 7 classes, this was the easiest.
One of the best professors I have had. She is a wonderful lecturer and compared to what I have heard from other people she is way better than the other professors. All you have to do is read the chapter at least once and then focus on the lecture powerpoints and you are golden.
Dr. Strong's 189 class was by far the easiest bio class I've taken yet. She takes attendance by iClickers, so attendance is mandatory. She lectures well and has a good personality. The material is very easy, and she posts her slides online. Her tests are fairly easy, and I passed while putting in minimal effort.
TAKE HER! VERY HELPFUL!!!!
First bio class that I've taken and she is a wonderful professor, she kind of inspires me to go into bio. Super helpful and encourages students to come to office hours. Alot of people say that bio is intimidating and it is, but just put in the work and you'll be fine. Don't slack off in this class because missed work adds up. Be sure to keep up.
The material itself is really interesting, but difficult! To be successful, you need to study constantly and be cooperative with your group members since there are a group presentation and multiple group projects (in-class group quiz & research paper analyses). Dr. Strong cares about students and is good at explaining concepts. She is the best!
Summer Session: It was very difficult. 3 Exams, final, attendance clicker, and lab make up your grade. One of our exam averages was 58%, no curve, she blamed the grade average on study habits. Average on the other exams were C and C-. Labs are easy so make sure to get an A, it saves your grade. She is there for you and really has a passion for Bio.
May I please say that she is one of THE BEST professors I've had. I'm on my 2nd Degree already, met a lot of teachers but she is a 9.9/10 for me! Simplifies everything for you, explains WELL, INTERACTIVE discussions. Those who grade her poor are the ones who DIDNT do well in her class! Very passionate and knowledgeable professor!!!
This is a tough subject for those who do NOT read the book! You will have to read, study everyday and participate in class if you wanna PASS! I got an A for her class and didn't have any problems w/ her at all! She cares about the students and wants everyone to succeed! Always there for you when you need her!
This class was very difficult in the summer. 3 exams, 1 final, iclicker quizzes, and lab which is 30%. Do good in lab because it will save you. Overall, she is there for you and likes to help! Exams are tough, be sure to study very hard and understand everything.
Best Professor at UNLV! Thank you, Dr. Strong.
Her exams are very tough and you will never have time to get them done. She made me want to switch my major, even though my passion is Biology. This class was not an upper division course and she made it way too hard. AVOID her at all cost if you care about your GPA!!!!! be AWARE!!!!
Read the textbook. Attend & participate in class. Study for the exams. EASY A. People don't realize that they're grading the teacher here, not the subject. Dr. Strong doesn't even grade you at all. It is YOURSELF. She never gives anything on the exam that was NOT discussed in class. Highly recommended to take her.
Dr. Strong prepares you for the upper division science courses. This is only an entry-level science course, so if you're already giving up on this, then you sure can't handle higher courses. Stop complaining and get your stuff together if you wanna be a Doctor. I would thank Dr. Strong someday for pushing me to the limit.
Summer term is no different than the regular semester: 3 exams, clicker quizzes and lab, except for the fact that it's only for 5 weeks. (Summer, hello..?) so I'm quite surprised that some people complain about the pace. We can always refer to the UNLV website for guidelines anyways. Dr. Strong is great, smart, approachable and inspirational.
Dr. Strong is prob one of the best professors at UNLV. This is science, not a dance course, you have to put in the work. On average i studied 8-15 a week. 3 exams and one final. Lowest test gets dropped. Online HW pretty straight forward. You WILL NOT PASS w/o the textbook. Go to her office hours and make yourself known. Get a study group early.
Dr. Strong really cares for you and pushes so much for you to do well because she cares for her students. That being said, you have to read the textbook and truly understand it. Lectures are engaging and don't consist of her just reading off of the slide; she really explains the concepts well. Tests are based off of lectures and the textbook.
Jesus. I definitely preferred her over Regner, but the content is just so dense. There is plenty of self-study in this course. She's helpful, just not in lecture where she talks a million words a minute. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS IF YOU CAN. I definitely had to work the hardest for her class, and I'm taking 18 units including CHEM 122.
Strong is a great Professor in my opinion. I took 189 at a different school and suffered. She teaches the information the way that lower division should be at least for 189. Really helpful and advertises her office hours and resources like crazy. Study guides helped a bunch too!
The class contains a lot of information, however she is covers everything in class that will appear on exams. Exams are tough but if you understand concepts, they are fair. If you don't get something, go to her office hours. She will spend as much time as needed helping you to understand. Will take her again!
This class and Dr. Strong are tough. But she is professional, fair, helpful, and knows a ton about Virology. Group presentation, iClicker, scientific article analysis, short answer exams, a few pop quizzes. You're going to work, but you're going to learn.
Dr. Strong knows her stuff. If something doesn't make in lecture, GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS. She is a great help and will break down concepts for you. It's easy to want to doze off in lecture, so try sitting in the front. Avg on tests is around a C. Lab will definitely be a big factor to your grade, so take that seriously as well. READ THE BOOK!
Dr. Strong is an amazing professor; she cares about her students and she's passionate about biology (you can see it in lectures). You need to go to fill out the notes, but it's worth it because she's very fun and helps you understand the concepts. The exams can be a little hard but she literally gives you the answers if you read the question.
One of the most interesting classes I've taken. Dr. Strong really enjoys teaching it and will make you appreciate it as well. It's a tough class but with hard work it's doable.
At first I thought she was talking down to the class because of the odd inflections she has in her voice, but I later figured it had no impact on her ability to clearly and positively teach the material. She adapted to our specific class needs and taught us accordingly. Pretty smart woman. Probably a role model for quite a few lady students.
Definitely knows her stuff and seems genuinely passionate about her field. Has a bit of a tendency to speak too quickly. Presentations rely mostly on images, so it's worth it to come to class for her explanations. Exams were mostly short-answer but she's fairly generous with grading. Plenty of opportunities for extra credit as well.
Amazing professor! She is so passionate about what she teaches, and it makes you want to pay attention more. She's funny and makes her lectures entertaining. Attendance is mandatory because she does iclicker questions. Expect to put a lot of studying hours in order to do well on the exams. Definitely recommend to go to her office hours and SI.
Great teacher! BIOL 189 is a lot of material, but if you show up to class and study it should make it easier!
Amazing professor! Be prepared to study for hours everyday, it's a tough course and she does not curve. Make sure you read before her lectures because she breaks down the material during class. Attendance is mandatory and there are weekly online quizzes. Make sure to do well in the lab because they will help with your grade.
I loved Dr Strong's passion for Virology, it definitely rubs off on you. Loved it. She keeps up with research to teach the most current information. There's a fair amount of reading research articles and working analysis. Exams mostly short answer, she wants you to show her you know the fundamental concept. Do not attempt to memorize YOU WILL FAIL!
Dr. Strong really cares about your grades and your concerns. She listens to whatever you tell her to help make the class better. Go to office hours, do the study guides, go to si. She's super nice and will help you understand the material during office hours if needed.
Amazing teacher but tough grader. She will definitely make you work for your grade, but she pushes you with all the work to prepare you for professional/grad school. Her exams are based off of her lectures and makes you apply concepts besides memorization. Lots of group work! She also provides extra credit. She's also always there to help.
To this day, I still remember her mnemonics (ender-gonna have to do it) that she used in class. This is a professor who cares if you learn or not. She uses many different ways for you to learn (from videos to Kahoot games before class to online homeworkthe hw is valuable studying for the exams) and the material truly sticks with you long after.
Very passionate. the subject is hard, but professor did her part and is clear on the grading. Exams cannot be taken likely, use her study tips to pass. LAB grade will save you, dont give up
Dr. Strong is an amazing professor. She makes the content as easy as possible and provides lots of resources to make the content easier. If you want a good grade in this class you have to work hard to get it. If you read the book before lecture, take all quizzes, and study the content after each lecture then its an easy A. Best Bio professor ever.
She is a very good teacher who cares about her students.
She is super helpful in helping you understand the material when you attend office hours. I wouldn't skip any other classes since biol189 cover a lot of material. Do well in lab because she doesnt curve her exam and your lab points will help make your grade or not. be prepared to study a lot during the week. Pay attention to exam 1&2 .
Dr. Strong is undeniably a great professor and passionate about her work. I'll definitely be trying to get into her virology class, but I'm hoping she will speak in more scientific/professional terms and prove her knowledge, rather than using dumbed-down analogies like she does in 196 to help freshmen understand.
This was my first bio class and I was so scared of failing. But thank God I got Christy as my teacher. She goes in GREAT detail as to what she expects you to understand before the exam. She is always available during office hours as well, so take advantage of that. BUT keep in mind that this isn't an easy course, you have to put in the work.
A LOT of busy work. Tests are 50% of your grade, Group work (article analyses, presentation, and quizzes) make up the other 45%. Attendance is mandatory for the last 5% because she gives clicker questions every time you walk into class. Exams are 4 MC, and 12+ short answer. Understand figures that she emphasizes and viral mechanisms for success.
Great professor. Really knows her stuff. BUT in my personal opinion, way too detailed oriented for a beginning Biology course. Also, just reading the book will NOT help. Book is very basic, so if you miss class, you miss all the details you need to pass the exam. She is terrific about allowing you to review your test & answering questions.
Very detailed in explanations. Her tests are pretty detailed for being an intro biol class compared to Regner. She is professional and is good at relating concepts to everyday things for better understanding. As long as you do your work, go to class, and study you'll do fine.
The course is load is a bit heavy, however if you read the textbook and take lecture notes you should be fine. She puts up chapter review on web campus -- utilize them!!
Dr. Strong is extremely knowledgeable in regard to Biology. Her class is tough. Lots of information covered, but she dumbs it down well. Her lectures are fast, and its tough to soak up the info. Go to her office hours and she will break the info down so it is much easier. If you want an A, office hours are a must. Overall tough, but great prof
This was my first class with Dr. Strong, I thought she was extremely helpful and will defiantly take her again. She isnt an easy A, but she cares about what she is teaching and thats what makes a good professor, quality ! But, if you want a good grade, be ready to read and be able to regurgitate!
Her lectures are incredibly informative and vital for clarification. Going to class and taking good notes on her verbal tips are the key to passing her exams. I read the textbook before lecture, and used the launchpad learning curve and her extra materials, and got an A on her exams without attending SI. Studying is valuable for this course.
Dr. Strong's lectures were helpful as long as you took good notes. She was extremely helpful and answered all questions thoroughly, she really wants to help her students succeed! The curriculum is difficult, I recommend reading the text. Tests are hard and conceptual.
Dr. Strong is amazing! Virology was very tough but rewarding. She makes boring things pretty interesting. Tips are to actually look up the sources that she sites like ViralZone, take detailed notes, record lectures, understand the viral cycle as a story, make a group with dependable people, and go to her office hours (she's very nice!).
Tough class for sure as all exams almost entirely free response/essay format. She is an amazing professor though and knows her stuff. The material covered is super dense but at least her energy makes lectures bearable. Group project and article analyses kind of suck so I would suggest finding some reliable group members.
She is an amazing professor! There are quizzes due before every lecture. Need to attend class because she uses iClicker to take attendance for a grade. She gives study guides for exams 2,3 and the final. Pretty sure she just wants to scare you with the first exam to let you know that you need to study! Highly recommend. Go to lab, miss 3 you fail.
Dr. Strong's class is doable if you put in the effort. The class itself covers a lot of content but Dr. Strong makes it understandable during lecture. The lowest test score is dropped and there is study guides for each test. If you like biology this is a class for you. Dr. Strong makes lecture very interesting and relatable to everyday life.
Dr. Strong is very intelligent and knows how to connect her lectures with real life scenarios. The problem is she usually teaches more upper division courses and adds unnecessary information into the lecture for BIOL 196. Her exams do NOT reflect her powerpoints. You have to read the book in order to get an A, and know the concepts very well.
My favorite professor in the department. She's very approachable, very straightforward lectures, gives cool info nuggets to hold your attention. The class is a lot of work though. Lots of article analysis and a group project.
Great lecture. Good tips on how to remember things. Tests are ridiculously tricky! LESS THAN 1% of 140 students got A's. The final covered over 30 chapters and she wants you to know ALL of it, every detail. Over the top for an entry level class.
Good professor. Explained things/one of the most accessible professors Ive ever had. Posts grades/responds quickly. Only recommendation would be to NOT take this course over summer. You have to put in time and effort for this class. She has a set final curve which really helped grades. A 78.5 ends up being a B and a 70 is a C, not C-
I took her over the Summer & she is a GREAT & passionate professor. Exams are LECTURE HEAVY & you have an iClicker Quiz for points at the end of each lecture. Lectures are engaging & make Bio very user friendly w/ catch-phrases for you to remember things. The way she words her exams are crazy tricky. Be able to think CRITICALLY & APPLY concepts.
Dr. Strong is a great professor and her lectures are very interesting. Since BIOL189 is a class usually filled with freshman, a lot of people do poorly on the exam due to lack of effort put into studying. Exams are hard, but go to office hours and maximize your points in lab to cushion your lecture grade. Easy A if you put in the effort.
Hardest teacher so far!! You really have to read the chapters, go to tutoring, go to SI sessions if there available to you and go to her office hours!!! DO ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING you can!!!! Good idea to form a study group by the first week. Don't procrastine the night before or you'll most likey fail your exams. Do your best in lab to! It'll help
Dr. Strong is a good teacher if you want to learn. Iclicker every class and 4 exams and a cumulative exam. She has study guides for every exam though which is nice. She tries to make lecture interesting and relate to real life scenarios. She is really nice and cares about you, make sure to study and go to office hours and you'll be fine.
LOVE HER! Tough class but she makes lectures so interesting & dumbs down the book to a point where you're able to comprehend it. She curves the final grade significantly, so a 70% will be a solid C. She'll make you work for your grade but she truly cares about student success. Utilize all the resources she gives to pass. PRIORITIZE THIS CLASS!
Dr. Strong is likes to explain things in multiple ways to make sure we understand her lectures. Definitely need to take a lot of time studying to really get to know the information. 4 exams and 1 final. Most people average a C or less, few people get A's and B's. Does iclicker for attendance.
At first I didnt know how to study for this class. The way to pass this class unless youre a genius is to make a study group or reach out for help by going to the SI sessions or her office hours. Her study guides help a lot and she bases them off her lecture slides. I put in many hours of work more than any other class.
Dr. Strong is a fantastic professor. She does her best to not just prepare you for this class, but for college as a whole. The lectures are necessary to go to, as the material is more clearly presented in them than in the book, and there is also iClicker attendance. You are provided with study guides that overprepare you for the tests. Great class.
She puts a lot of emphasis on the things she wants you to know for the exams, make sure to pay attention to things that she spends a lot of time on. BEWARE, there's a group project and presentation. She didn't input most of the grades until the Saturday after finals so if you had any disagreements with your grade, you can't really argue with her.
Dr. Strong is a really good professor, but get ready to form better study habits if you want to pass this class. Her tests are mainly based on her power points during lectures so take notes of the things she says! You should also read the book because you'll need to know the information for the pre and post lectures done online. U got this!
DO THE STUDY GUIDES AND STUDY IT! THEY WILL DEFINITELY HELP YOU ON THE TEST! DON'T WAIT LAST MINUTE TO DO THEM!!!
Dr. Strong is great. She's a little intense but overall she really cares about the topic and is invested in everyone knowing the necessary information. However, if you're struggling with a topic in the pre-lecture, it's important to go to class because she breaks things down well.
Dr. Strong is a very caring professor. She genuinely wants you to do good in her class, she provides a study guide weeks prior to each exam. They were lengthy because they over prepare you for the exams & that's the point!! Go to class because those iclicker points could be the reason your grade could go from a C to a low B due to her curve..
Professor Strong is a difficult teacher, but she has made me love bio and understand why this stuff is so important.
Lectures are based off broad ideas while exams are very specific. Self-teaching is a must. Trick questions on exams. Doing her study guide is not enough. Very few A's and B's in the class. You can go to every lecture, study her powerpoints, do the exam study guide, and still fail. She makes the class way harder than necessary.
Dr. Strong is a very well educated professor, however, her class is very hard. You MUST read the book, do the study guides and actually understand them, and definitely make time to go to her office hours. She is very accessible outside of class, caring, and willing to help you, but like I said before, definitely not an easy A.
One of the best professors I've ever had. Her class gave me such an appreciation for biology, the human body, the environment, etc. Be ready to DEDICATE TIME AND EFFORT to this class. Not easy by any means. DOING HER STUDY GUIDE (IN ADVANCE - NOT THE LAST MINUTE!) is KEY.
Dr. Strong was the best teacher I have ever had. She's caring, she's approachable and knows what she's doing. She is clear in her lectures and says things in a way that makes it easier to remember. She goes by the textbook so it's best if you read it. If you study and do what you need to do, you'll pass. You have to work for your A, but it's easy
Strong is an amazing prof and you could tell she really did love biology, but this class was insanely difficult. The tests are worth half of your grade and other assignments were worth less than 20%, so if you bomb one test it is really difficult to raise it again. You HAVE to read the book and do your own learning to really understand the concepts
The class was challenging not going to lie, you should definitely write what she is saying from the lectures in your notes. I advise you to look at the study guide during the class and fill in the answers that you can and definitely go to her office hours as much as you can.
How to pass this class: 1) Do her study guides; tedious but they over prepare you for test. 2)Study her power points. 3) Do well in lab. I didn't pass because all I did was read the textbook--which didn't help for anything but the pre and post lectures on connect. Her test are all concept. She doesn't want you memorizing terms but applying them.
She is a great teacher. Everyone on here who bashes her is really just lazy to do the work. It is not even hard, her study guides were a lot of work but prepares you well. Encourages you to go to her study guides. It wasn't that hard of a class. I barley showed up to class or read the text book. Just do her study guides based off her powerpoints
Her lectures were very well done. She breaks down all of the concepts and makes them a lot easier to understand. Her tests reflected her lectures and powerpoints. I only used the textbook for the online work. She really does care about her students getting a good grade and answers any questions.
I loved her, she was the best teacher Ive ever had. She explains everything in depth which reflects on her tests. You do need to study for her tests but they aren't ridiculously hard.
Dr. Strong pushes her students to start thinking like scientists. You will get really good at reading articles. Her class is very tough and exams are absolutely brutal. That being said, it was one of the best classes I've taken. I learned so much, I had to for her killer exams. Really challenging and cool class. A LOT of group work.
heavy lecture. a lot of information to learn. make sure you give this class a lot of time. not hard just time consuming. Dr strong is a great teacher highly recommend
Very smart and kind professor but this class inst an easy A, you need to study and keep up with lectures and assignments, your effort in this class will reflect on your grade. make sure to get enough study for exams
Dr strong has very well put together lectures. She explains all of the material very well. Reading the book can be helpful if you dont understand something, I recommend skimming through the book for each chapter at least once. Start the study guides as soon as you can they help alot. Her class is not an easy A and the exams can be hard sometimes.
Study guides are thorough but do them! They help a ton on the tests which are kind of hard. Go to office hours and read the textbook when you don't understand. She wants you to succeed!
One of the hardest upper division classes Ive taken. She intentionally makes her exams hard (to the next level). Lots of articles to read, analysis, assignments, I-clickers. quizzes, group work, and a presentation. All the grad students dropped, that should say something. Tells the class its not easy to get an A, well a B and C are just as hard.
Dr. Strong is a good, passionate professor, but her class is very very time consuming, so be ready to sacrifice study time in your other classes. There's 15 group assignments, a group project, weekly quizzes, and difficult written exams. I felt this class was made more complicated than needed which detracted from the actual learning.
I've had classes w/ Dr. Strong prior to Virology and I could say that I'd pick her over & over again. Yes she makes everything hard. But if you can't pass an undergrad class, what's the assurance that you'd pass your classes in med/pharm/dental schools?! ALSO, THERE WAS ONLY 1 GRAD STUDENT, so I guess you could say that "ALL OF THEM DROPPED"! Geez.
*Stay on top of the requirements. Do them EARLY. *Step up as the group LEADER. *Understand the articles- itll help you for the EXAM. *Read the book PRIOR to lectures. *Review your exam after she grades them. *Go to her office. Prove that YOU WANT AN A!
You should definitely get the textbook, and make sure that you don't miss any pre or post lecture quizzes. They aren't worth much, but they can definitely make a difference between a B or a C. DO HER STUDY GUIDES. The study guides over prepare you for her exams. She always makes herself available to students during office hours as well.
Record and listen to the lectures. Requires studying 1-2 weeks beforehand. The articles take up a significant part of the exams. Exams are short answer and require full comprehension. Study groups would be very helpful. Come to class as iClicker and quizzes are easy points. There is a group project, don't take it lightly but it's not too hard.
Really great lectures that keep you engaged. She posts study guides for each chapter that really helps prepare you for the tests. Also willing to help if you ever need it so don't be shy! Real fast at answering emails too.
Really hard to grasp Bio189 when she just rehashes what the prelecture teaches you. Exams are 60% of your grade so study. She has small things to make your grade but truthfully u just need the exams. Shes big on catching cheating so dont even try. Memorize certain aspects
Shes great but the course work is so heavy. Her lectures, in my opinion, are not worth going too because they did not make a difference in my studying. I learned most from the textbook and following/doing her studying guides that she provides.
I took this class over the summer so it was way faster than usual. Be prepared to study a LOT for this class. Watch the lectures; she breaks stuff down into easier concepts that really helps. If you don't understand something, take the time to read the book or find extra guidance. She's a good professor. Try not to cram!!
There is a TON of work for this class. For the summer class, you have to do several hours of work each day. One exam per week for lecture & 6 quizzes per week for lab (5 weeks total). I'm not sure if this class has been offered online before, but there is just way too much work than necessary, especially if you're taking more than one summer class.
Very good professor! In addition to the lecture, there is a Lab portion. This lab portion is crucial to keep up, as it adds to your overall grade at the end of the semester. Lots of visual and video explanations for Lab, and is always open to any questions the student may have.
She is okay, but for her tests you cannot go back to the previous which the other professor changed to accomodate the students which I didnt think was fair for everyone. There are four tests and worth 60% of your overall grade. Remember when everything is due.
Dr. Strong is a good professor. You can't really go wrong with her. Her lectures provide great examples so students can understand the lesson. There is work to do but for the most part, it is manageable. Attend office hours if you seek more help, she can be quite helpful and even willing to go over the study guide with you.
You would think that teachers would be understanding about how much harder it is to navigate multiple online classes that you did not even plan on doing online but are now being forced to because of covid but she was not at all. She was very impersonal and does not care about students or their success. Definitely would not recommend.
You need to have taken Cell Phys in order to fully appreciate this class. It is difficult to remember all the viral mechanisms without having a good understanding of how a normal cell works. Her lectures are also structured very well but they are long with lots of details that you need to remember. I recommend going over every mechanisms with her.
One critique I honestly DO NOT like is how when it comes to tests/quizzes is you CAN'T go back to your answers. There was only one time where she let us go back to our answers, but the rest of the year you couldn't do it anymore. Also they have this thing called LOCKDOWN, where they can see what you are doing while taking the test/quiz.
Dr. Strong is consistently rude and unhelpful in office hours. I wouldn't even bother going. Her lectures and the book don't match but she will test you on both, including previous chapters. She cares more about catching people cheating than she does about teaching or the student understanding. Waits between 7-10 days to release test grades.
Dr. Strong will tell you what she expects, and her exams are based on her lectures. Office hours are great for going over missed answers, and she is always accessible. She is by far one of the best professors at UNLV, and she is excellent at teaching. She makes hard concepts relatively easy to understand.
If you want to pass this class you have to put in a lot of work/hours. The online class consists of lectures that she goes through in a lot of detail. They are very long but she simplifies everything down. She will not curve your grade at all so appreciate the extra credit at the beginning of the semester. Good professor but very heavy content.
I can definitely say Dr. Strong is one of my fave profs at UNLV. She cares for the success of her students. Her exams are all written response, but she makes it pretty obvious what she will be asking during lectures. A lot of group work, but evens out exam grades if they are lacking. Live lectures, very interesting material. Overall a great class!
She explains a lot... She gives points for attendance and also iclicker questions. My TA was amaaaaaaazing, I legit passed this class because I sat with my TA every week and we just studied and did practice questions.
she doesnt communicate. I would think that with coronavirus becoming a thing and everyone being forced to do online school she would be more understanding. She doesnt answer my emails. I dont understand most of whats going on because she goes from both the book and the lectures.
She honestly fails everyone for reading a test question out loud. This was also hard class for me and the test are hard if you dont study. I dont recommend anyone to get her an a professor. This is my first semesters and theres been so many students getting failed for reading out loud! DONT GET HER!
Professor wouldnt teach the subject but would rather ramble about non important things
Ok, to be clear I did learn some things. BUT, this class was insanely difficult. I've never spent so many hours on just 1 class. Exams are fine ONLY IF you study. She is one of the most uptight profs when it comes to "cheating" and fails students just for mumbling questions. Doesn't seem bothered to fail students.
Strong isn't your go to professor if you want to take an intro to biology class. I learned more biology in high school than I do as a college student in her class. I never thought I would have to learn NEW information in a chapter to only take the exam a few days later. Good luck friends.
The first few weeks were rough because I wasn't prepared for the amount of time this class required. There are a lot of assignments that took forever at first. But as the semester went on and I got used to the assignments they got easier and the class wasn't so tough. There are a ton of assignments. Just do ALL of the work and you'll be fine.
She doesnt lecture it is all prerecorded. The material she has you study for for the tests isnt even right. On the tests if you read to yourself you will fail. Overall she is a horrible professor who does not care if you pass,it almost seems like she would rather fail you then help you! Basically my whole class failed. Find another professor!!!!
For every 4 chapters, there's a test. Taking notes and watching each lecture is really important to pass her class. She has office hours twice a week and she can give you feedback on tests if you ask. The worst part was using the Lockdown Browser during tests.
She is super nice and really wants her students to succeed. If you listen to her advice there is no reason you shouldn't get a solid A. She likes to ensure that you know what she is talking about, she likes to make sure you understand everything she is talking about. Very easily available.
She was a great professor and really wants everyone to do well! She is always willing to meet with students during her office hours to go over any questions or the test. Each chapter will have a pre-lecture (easy points) and a post lecture (quiz) and although this may seem like a lot, it's worth it because it helps. I recommend her for any class!
She is the worst professor i've had at unlv. I have never spent more time on homework until this class. It is somewhat easy but it takes hours. She is super strict on deadlines and won't give extensions. The exams are the worst. The questions don't match up with the homework or lectures. I studied more than I ever have and I got a 53%. Avoid her.
Dr Strong is a great professor. Her class is tough but only 50% is the exams. The exams will kill you if you aren't prepared. There are several group projects and 1 big final term powerpoint at the end. It wasn't that bad or difficult just time consuming. You'll need to study/understand the tables and figures a lot to be able to pass the exams.
She is a really nice professor, clear in her lectures and always willing to meet outside of class for help. I highly recommend reading the textbook and taking notes it really does help a lot. Also, do the study guides for the tests, it truly covers the things on the test. Overall, she is a great professor and you will pass as long as you study.
I waited to write this review until two semesters after her class. Looking back now, I appreciate Dr. Strong for laying the groundwork for good study habits, a solid foundation in Biology, and the extensive course load to prepare me for upper-division classes and my nursing program. This class is challenging, but so are all science classes.
She always gave good explanations of the content and made sure that student's weren't zoning out at times. She always answers questions with the "there's no such thing as a stupid question" mindset. Make sure to attend her office hours as she gives good explanations if you're confused on anything. She also gives good tips to learn how to study.
She's great with pausing the lecture to answer any questions and she makes sure the class understands the material clearly. She's usually available for office hours and responds to emails very quickly; but students will have to put many hours outside of school to sufficiently study for this class.
Professor Strong is a professor who has passion in what she does. Cares for students to understand the material given and pushes for students to collaborate with one another. Provides practice and guides. Professor strong is accessible by emails and office hours, which are very helpful. Extremely exam and lecture heavy. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY.
Dr. Strong was a great professor. She was very helpful during office hours. She has a genuine passion for her job. The exams can be difficult, if you do not study the material. If you have a solid background in Biology, such as AP Biology in high school the class is much easier. The class is easily manageable if you have good study habits.
exams are based on the lectures, exams are multiple choice and written response. she explains topics really well and loves answering questions. please go to class on time! I came in late once and missed a participation assignment and it brought down my grade by 2%. also be ready to work with your classmates!
You do not need to buy a textbook, it is included (McGraw Hill). Be prepared for long lectures and participation assignments. Do not miss class or you will lose participation points for that day and it will drop your grade a bit. Tests are based on lectures. She explains the information on the slides very well and is willing to elaborate and help.
Dr. Strong is a very kind and super knowledgable about anything biology. Read the chapters before class so when she does present in class you have an understanding of what is going on. Make sure to utilize her office hours. She is not dismissive she tries to make sure all students are engaged with funny gestures and mnemonics.
Honestly, this was an amazing professor for BIOL 189A. She does such an amazing job giving good explanations on the topics at hand. She is also super interactive with the class and has amazing humor! Would 100% retake this class, even though it was a LOT of material, i had an amazing experience.
Dr. Strong isn't approachable and she talks to us like we are babies. The lectures are VERY boring and non-engaging. She is more about quantity vs quality. She spends 20 seconds on each slide. Her lectures are pointless. She is not supportive or lively. Nobody in the class understands anything. Also, don't expect to have your emails answered.
No one in my class knows what's going on. Her lectures are so rushed you can barely even comprehend what she said before she's onto the next slide. We have pre lecture and post lecture assignments every week. Both take about 1.5 hours each. Plus lots of studying cause her exams are not easy. I am a pretty decent student (3.8 GPA) and I struggled
I feel like Prof Strong doesn't understand that just because she understands Biology, not everyone does. I feel like she thinks it's simple since she obviously knows the material, but she speaks so quickly that to people that are not familiar with the information it's too fast. She is nice and I feel like she genuinely wants students to succeed.
Dr. Strong is knowledgeable and passionate about biology. Attend class, use the textbook, and don't be afraid to ask questions. The workload can be heavy, but Unstuckstudy helped me stay on top of assignments. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
This class is one of those that you will genuinely need to put the time in. The workload is heavy and the material is not easy. I feel like 75% of the material I had to learn on my own. This was for sure my hardest class of the semester and took a lot of effort. I would probably dedicate at least 10 hours a week to studying to be successful.
Dr. Strong really wants students to understand the material, and conducts lectures in an entertaining and easy way. Homework is given twice a week, in order to balance out heavy exam grades. She offers occasional extra credit for the whole class, but not for individuals. She responds to emails very fast, and has flexible office hours.
honestly, was not a big fan of how she lectured or presented her exams. the only thing that helped me study for her course was the SI's slides. she made a 190 class much harder than it needed to be. she also did random in class participation stuff, which is fine, but it got very annoying. the exams you needed to know such tedious information too.
A lot of long pre and post lecture assignments but they do prepare you for the lecture ahead of time, even though they aren't the most relevant for test material. She explains things amazingly, although the lectures have to be pretty fast since there is a lot of course material to cover.
Dr. Strong wants you to succeed! Therefore, be ready to dedicate at least 8 hours of studying for this course. It often felt a lot harder than it should have been and lectures do feel boring, but she provides amazing analogies to remember certain details about a topic. The material is not easy! Make sure to do a lot of active recall as studying.
The course itself is extremely tough, taking a LOT of dedication and diligence, but I loved having Strong as an instructor. She was always lively, made the info more easily digestible, and there were a few extra credit assignments sprinkled throughout the semester. This class is not for the weak. Its exam heavy and you MUST study, but Strong rocks!
Dr. Strong is an amazing professor and lecturer. Not only where her lectures entertaining and lively, but the way that she taught the material made it easy to digest. There's a lot of material within the course itself but the tests aren't very hard at all as long as you put in the studying and don't leave it all for last minute. Great class!
I would say to definitely attend office hours the exams can be difficult if you aren't studying right. Read the textbook and take your time and take notes for the pre and post lectures. Overall, Dr. Strong was a great professor the content being taught it taught well the hardest part is studying correctly to pass the exams.
I took this class over the summer, and I genuinely think Dr. Strong is the reason I had a fighting chance. The material can be a lot, but she really wants to see her students succeed. If you put in the effort and utilize the study resources, you'll be fine.
This professor taught me not to communicate with professors if I have concerns because students never win against the syllabus and I learned not to trust the Webcampus gradebook. This professor also had caused me so much anxiety.
This class isn't difficult if you keep up with the material, prepare to do a lot of work on your own because the professor is not approachable and can be condescending. In addition to that, the entire grade system was flawed and lots of us were not aware of what our correct grade was since she didn't set up canvas, pick anyone else.
