Good course, but he grades hard! No longer rocks for jocks
he is awful...dont take this class
Chucky = Devil. Worst prof. I've ever had. EVER.
The clickity-clack of the cowboy boots first thing in the morning, though sometimes we have trouble seeing him over his podium. And remember kids, "Geology can be passionate, it is a well known fact that subduction leads to orogenies."
This guy is a tool. Though he is funny at times, he isn't very helpful at others. Impossible to find after class. Actually posts this rate your professor stuff on his door (like i said...a tool). Yee haw Chuck! Get a lasso for your boots!
Chuck Bailey Rocks. Sense of humor, clear, direct, enthusiastic. Always helpful when you take the time to meet with him.
Good teacher, gets his point across, but expects a lot more than he gives on exams and problem sets, hard grader
the class is rarely boring but he gives out way less than what he expects you to put in. tests are very detailed and some questions kinda random. given a choice i probably wouldve tried the other geology class for the science GER instead of this one.
ha ha, this stuff is hilarious. Chucks not so bad. Hes a geo man. nuf said. If you take his classes read over your tests and make sure you check your answers and add up the points, cause he don't grade so well at times. High entertainment valu.
Obscure questions on exams.
Whatever happened to rocks for jocks? Chuck is hot, funny and entertaining but I would hesitate to call him a great professor. Tests tend to ask obscure questions and he is a pretty hard grader.
very funny, very hard grader, very long tests. if you go to the review sessions, life is 100 times easier. test questions are sometimes picky, but no surprises on format.
funny, good teacher, interesting course
This course covers so much, and you really need to understand it in order to do well. Read the book, it really helps with the lectures. Go to the help sessions, esp. for problem sets.
He's entertaining and makes geo (boring) interesting. Tests and problem sets are hard when you take good notes, read the book, and come to class. He likes to have review sessions, but they are not the biggest help. He's friendly, but a bit tough geo 110.
this class was hard, but Chuck is really entertaining and fun
hey hey, why no smiley face? One of the best classes I've taken. The man knows how to make you think, and tells you when you're wrong. If you're stuck on your grades he may ****you off on occasion, but he's got a great sense of sarcasm to lighten the blow. Chuck makes me SMILE!
Chuck Bailey is creative & dedicated to teaching and research. He genuinely cares for students & therefore sets high standards. He makes every effort to help you meet these standards & challenge yourself. His goal is to teach you how to think & solve problems. Chuck's enthusiasm & energy are contagious & his teaching style is refreshing.
Chuck is amazing. His teaching style is really good, and I've learned the most of any class in the two classes I've had with Chuck. He has high expectations, but whats wrong with that? Overall, great prof to take a class with.
i took this back as a freshman. I miss it. He's one of the my top 5 professors here at the college in four years.
Very engaging professor, but the class is deceptively hard. You will definitely learn a lot and tests and quizzes aren't too bad, but the problem sets are so hard. If you don't have good problem solving skills maybe look elsewhere because your grade will suffer, but an otherwise great class.
Interesting and funny guy, lectures were good for the most part and you just take notes off powerpoint. Quizzes weekley are easy, picky with grading problem sets, tests are managable.
Amusing lectures. Problem sets not so bad, just work with other people and you will get it. Tests not too bad if you study.
CHUCK IS MAH BOY! Seriously this is probably my favorite professor at the college. He is a fantastic teacher and he makes his classes very fun and engaging. As someone who rountinely falls asleep in any class taken, Chuck kept me awake and interested in his class. Exams aren't hard, problem sets can take a little work but no more than a night.
i love him! he is hilarious, lectures are entertaining, and tests & problem sets are managable if you go to help sessions. should go to class because of weekly quizes and in class activities
Chuck is extremely entertaining and makes lecture interesting. I actually enjoy going to class everyday. His test are kind of difficult if you do not read the textbook and attend class. His review sessions are more helpful in the intro levels, not really for this class. Overall, it has been one of my favorite classes at the college.
It's not rocks for jocks, so make sure you take the class with friends. Work on the Problem Sets together and you'll be fine. Tests aren't too hard. Really entertaining and he's so fine.
Entertaining guy, but a little disorganized in his lectures. Using the textbook and the problem sets helped me learn a lot. I found him to be moody, so don't always expect friendly help when you go to his office. Also, when challenged, his explanations tend toward "because I said so" rather than a more rigorous response.
this one's for you chuck. Have a shot of tequila. And a hot tamale.
Outrageous. So Contagious. Make you think that JAZZY MADE IT!
I was looking for an easy GER fulfillment, and on the first class, Chuck was funny, energetic, and seemed like the perfect professor for this material I otherwise had no interest in. Then came the problem sets that seemed to appeal more to math majors than geology students, and the insanely difficult tests. Chuck keeps you laughing, though.
class with chuck was a great way to start the morning! he is so funny, engaging, and interesting in his lectures. his choise of slide pics and examples always keep you laughing. He knows his stuff, and is willing to help. Problem sets do take alot of work, but study and read the text and you be do awesome.
This has been my favorite class at W&M so far. Chuck was such a fun guy and he really got me interested in geology. I recommend taking this class.
Had for physical geography: earth's environmental systems. Great teacher and guy. Everything comes from power points in class which he posts on blackboard. Attendance isn't mandatory but does give out in class exercises to see who is present. Problem sets and tests aren't too tough if you put in a good amount of studying.
Chuck was hilarious and engaging. That said, I still don't like the subject, but he made it alright. However, you will get used to having to figure out which way is north.
Bailey is a great professor! He is engaging, funny, and is a great lecturer. The problem sets could be a little confusing at times, but he is always available for questions during his office hours. Definitely take him if you need a science GER!
Very engaging professor and an interesting class. DEFINITELY take for GER2A. Easy if you come to class (there's a participation grade). Two midterms and a final, and three very time-consuming problem sets. Go to the review sessions for the problem sets!
Alright, so Bailey seems like a nice, funny guy at first but his problem sets are extremely time consuming and difficult. His lecture slides are not very helpful for studying for his exams, as they are full of questions with no answers. As for solving problems using equations, etc, he does not run through examples in class is easily distracted
Use the lectures to study. Hardly used the book. Chuck is personable and engaging. He knows most of the class is taking for GER and doesn't care about rocks. Take class with friends so they can help w/ the problem set because they are HARD. Has review sessions each week and use participation.
Chuck is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. He's a great lecturer and loves trying new things. He keeps you engaged. His class IS pretty difficult, though. Keep your attendance up. Study lectures notes extensively for the quizzes and tests. And definitely go to the help sessions--seriously, you're screwed on the problem sets without them.
Bailey is really the best teacher. His class is very difficult, especially the problems sets. But the class attendance take a big part of the grade. The help session is useful.
worst professor ive had. not very engaging or helpful
Chuck is a GREAT professor and makes the class lively and entertaining, even if you're not interested in geology. His problem sets and tests are pretty difficult, but he always offers help sessions which are great reviews and very beneficial. He uses Lecture Tools which makes class easily interactive. Take this class and you won't regret it!
Engaging lectures with sense of humor. Makes geology cool and fun. Problem sets and tests were challenging but fair for a non-geo major like me.
Chuck is great. His lectures aren't totally on topic, but are certainly fun. Everything is difficult, but fair. I certainly found it very interesting. Not an easy A. He's scarily great with names, and pokes fun at all of his students. Brought in a marshmallow gun on halloween
Chuck knows that you probably will hate his lecture style and he really and truly does not care. He's a funny guy but he can seem unfriendly in office hours.I'm a senior non-geo major and I've taken his classes twice just because he is so refreshing compared to other WM profs. Lectures don't follow a format. Make friends for problem sets.
Very divided on Chuck. For one, his lectures are poorly organized, he explains little in class, and his assignments are hard. Disappointed I did't learn more on Wx from lecture. However, he is still very funny and approachable. You definitely have to work for a good grade--good class for self-learners. Does not inflate grades which I appreciated
Problem sets are pretty tough, and so are tests, but he's a fair grader and there are assignments to boost your grade. Chuck is a really likable guy: his lectures are totally all over the place, but they are somewhat interesting and very funny. He respects students. He's definitely one of the most fun professors I've had, but his class isn't easy.
Chuck is so far the best professor I've had here. Problem sets were tough but older students always offered to help and Chuck was around for office hours and pretty helpful there. I was always excited to come to class- lectures are engaging and not filled with info to memorize, just concepts to understand. Fun class on Blowout.
Be prepared to learn A LOT of materiel in Chuck's classes. Structure and Dynamics is one of the more difficult geology classes but you learn a lot. Chuck is funny, a fair grader, and always willing to help you outside of class. He is also very self aware of his flaws and listens to student feedback to help make class better.
Dr. Bailey clearly knows his material, but he is also a thin-skinned sociopath who openly harasses students both in and out of class. If you aren't one of his favorites, you're almost certainly going to be bullied. I really wanted to like him, but the fact of the matter is that he made this class unbearable for me, which is really a shame.
Chuck is a great guy, in and out of the classroom. He is eager to help students during office hours and is very clear in explaining things. He lectures are entertaining and informative, but learning how to take notes for his class can be a challleng bc they are all over the place. He really respects students and I hope to have him as my prof again!
Chuck is the chillest dude out there. He loves his field and he loves his students, and will make a big effort to get to know you personally. He is punctual in class and always willing to help during office hours. I am excited to take more of his classes in the future!
A really likable guy! Very funny and engaging. But his problem-sets and test are super hard. He'll mention concepts just once in class, and you're expected to immediately understand them fully. Will never revisit them. It's useless to go over notes, because his slide-shows and lectures are so erratic. Wouldn't recommend.
professor bailey makes it nearly impossible to receive an "A" in his class. be ready to learn a lot on your own, as is expected in college. he is a down-to-earth guy who is willing to help, but a lot of independent learning is required. lectures can be a bit confusing and disjointed, but study hard, and you will survive.
Took his Coll 100 class and it was amazing! Who knew someone could make geology interesting. Make sure you study though because the tests are no joke.
Chuck is a great guy. His tests/problem sets are tough and when I was really struggling he really took the time to help me. His lectures are really funny and he makes sure to have comedic breaks built into his lectures during our 1 hr. 20 min. class. I like him even when the class is hard and I appreciate his sincerity in helping me succeed.
Chuck is a really funny guy who does a lot to make this class interesting. However, his problems sets are extremely tedious and graded very hard. The tests aren't as bad as the problem sets, but many concepts that weren't covered in class can show up when you don't expect it. Lectures are entertaining but erratic.
I love Chuck! He makes rocks super fun, but also this isn't rocks for jocks. Chuck makes problem sets and exam problems harder than they need to be though if you review the material you'll be fine. Holds study sessions before due dates. Make sure you know your song lyrics it will come in handy.
Best class I've ever taken, would absolutely recommend. Problem sets are kinda tough, but the class is amazing. Really focus on practical applications of what your're learning and the lectures are great. Lecture always had weather information for the day and lots of music. By far the best COLL 100!
Really nice guy and is very knowledgable, but his lectures are a little hard to follow. Most of his tests are on application which we did very little of on in class, just go to his office hours and review session and you will be fine. But other than the class was pretty easy virtually no homework, couple projects, and midterm and final.
Took two classes with him that were very easy. No reading was required and it was all covered well in the lectures. I liked him but the feeling did not appear mutual
Chuck is a great professor! Lab time is spent lecturing & requires many hours outside of lab to complete projects. Utilize office hours and prepare to dig for answers. He makes you work for it but you will leave prepared to solve problems on your own. Chuck will care about your grade as much as you do. You will get back what you put in. Tough class
It's a hard class and you will need office hours. Attendance and notes will help you!
Chuck is by far one of the most interesting professors I have had. Lectures would fly by when sitting in his class. He is a tough grader sometimes, but I think that must be a geology department thing - looking at you, Linda. All in all, he is probably my favorite thin-skinned sociopath, and I'd recommend that you take one of his classes.
Chuck is like an overgrown W&M undergrad, but in all the right ways. He's super passionate about structure, and really cares about his students becoming better geologists and better thinkers. The class is tough, but if you show up (trust m, only skip if you're literally dying), take notes, and work with your classmates, you'll be fine.
Chuck is a king and he makes you a better student. His standards are high, with good reason because he is a god, so you should definitely take his classes. Man is a genius.
Unhelpful, disorganized, and conceited. His lectures were chaotic and it was never clear what he wanted us to know. Office hours were useless as he would just talk about himself and give different answers to the same question. He never grades anything or gives rubrics/feedback and his favorites get preferential treatment. Avoid when possible.
Do not take this class unless you are some sort of geology genius and want to commit all your time to learning material. Chuck expects you to know everything, and he has missed class probably 8 times so far this semester. One time he forgot to tell us it was even canceled. Lectures all over the place, thinks he's always right, DO NOT RECOMMEND
He missed a solid amount of classes this semester and barely adjusted the assignment load to accommodate that, despite us having very little to go on. Took 3 months to enter any grades until AFTER add/drop, despite multiple promises to do so. We were set up to fail. I can't warn you strong enough to stay away from this man and anything he teaches.
Today is December 14th and most of the assignments are still not graded. He assigns very few assignments, does not give a comprehensive rubric, and then grades very harshly. His lectures are disorganized and nearly impossible to take notes from. Avoid if possible.
As someone with almost no knowledge of geology, this was a very difficult class. The lectures weren't helpful at all, and were chaotic. Isn't available outside of class, and took months to enter in any grades. There was no rubric for the final project worth 20% of your grade, and the problem sets are difficult and useless. Do not take this class.
Smart guy, but king of overpromising and underdelivering. Never submitted grades on time and never provided feedback on problem sets. Exams are challenging for non geo majors, but he did curve. No rubric for final project worth 20% of your grade. Lectures were chaotic and disorganized. Attending office hours is a must if you want the A
Funny guy, but kind of all over the place with content. I didn't think we would have to take exams for a coll100 but he gave us a midterm and a final. Super easy grader, I barely studied for the midterm or final and got an A on both.
Chuck is a SUPER entertaining lecturer and as a COLL 100 the class was great. Very few assignments, all of which were pretty easy. However, Chuck takes forever to grade and I would not say I actually learned anything in the class. Easy Coll 100, but don't think I would want to take a class from him that I actually had to learn in.
Chuck was very nice and funny in class. However, his expectations on the exams were terrible. He never gave us enough material to properly prepare for exams, and I had a hard time understanding what would be on the exam. Lectures were very hard to follow
Although infamous for a non-linear teaching style, Chuck stands out among W&M faculty for a true passion for the course content and an eagerness to get students LEARNING!!! Prepare for lots of activities, class bonding, comedy, and tragedy. If you take it for what it is, you'll get a good grade and come out knowing more than you ever imagined!
Chuck is a truly great professor, and I'm really glad I had him. Structure is a difficult class, so I'd recommend reading the textbook. Chuck is a hilarious lecturer, and very engaging, but his lectures often have limited structure. reading the textbook and focusing on the topics he mentions class is necessary. If you can take 310 with him do it!
Sometimes you'd show up to class and he'd talk about music and Star Trek and then you'd leave. I never knew how to study for exams. Haven't gotten a picture of a melon on a test so far, but I expect one during the final exam. Don't take for an easy NQR credit. Choose Mars for the group project.
Chuck has an idiosyncratic way of explaining concepts and approaching material, and he's also somewhat absent and unreliable. He is funny, but definitely not orthodox or organized in any way, shape, or form.
Try not to hold him to his word. I say this very seriously. He is willing to help you understand concepts IF you can find him; he's somewhat flighty. When he puts effort into his lectures, they are actually very fun and engaging. Beware of the fact that he will try to “expand your mind” during exams (horrifying). He is a cool guy.
I have so many mixed feelings on this man. He's really funny and if you can keep up with SUPER unorganized lectures it ultimately is a pretty fun class. Sometimes is really unhelpful answering questions. Problem sets are pretty difficult and class is basically all lectures and tests. Grades really slow. Had no clue how to study for exams.
Chuck's very enthusiastic. A bit disorganized & doesn't often keep his promises. Makes lectures fun w/humor. To succeed u need to attend class and TAKE NOTES: slidedecks don't have all the info. 2 problem sets: math and physics heavy, AP physics 1 content. Chuck is approachable: USE OFFICE HRS. Not a lot of work, not required to read textbook.
Chuck is probably the best professor I have had so far. His lectures are super informative and are not taught in a typical boring textbook-based way. He's also insane, but in a fun way.
