He is an excellent teacher overall. Gives good lectures and answers all questions. Tests are exactly how you would expect them. No curve **** or strange questions.

he is a good teacher, but dont take him over summer. he gave us three test in one week, on time. but other then that he explains everything very well.
Lazy that is one word that summarizes him. We never got a single paper back from him I think he graded us on how much he liked us. All he did was **** and talk about his shed building project. His accent is bad but still managble.
Just bad...

The class average is no higher than 69% He teaches only the fastest way to arrive at an answer, not necessarily the easiest or most logical. Gives a ridiculous amount of homework, good luck finishing tests! If you can self teach yourself math you can pass but don't expect an A, very few given.
This guy sux I dont like him very hard to understand. very unclear dont take him unless you know your calc already. (dont expect to learn)
I dont like this teacher he is very hard to understand and gives out alot of hw dont take the class unless you already know the information(not just calc 1). Doesnt curve .... 1st Test class avg 67 and 2nd test class avg 63 probably bout 2 A's in the class
Difficult to understand. Too much homework. Tests take too long (He tries to fit a 2 hr exam in a 50min session). Very low grader. You get the idea. If you're really good at learning on your own, take his class. If not, forget about it.
Test averages: 67, 63, 69, and 70. No curve! 1/2 the class has dropped since the start. Im in the process of writing 2 the Math Department about him. If ne1 wants to be included in my letter, let me know. He admits to never getting 'A's on his test, yet expects his students to. Unrealistic teacher!
Consider his class independent study. You cannot understand him anyways. Do every other problem in the book, and you've just covered all what he would have.
This guy is had to understand. He doesnt seak good english but heis a nice guy. He moves pretty fast but if you do the homework and study you can get an "A". Take this class for credit/no credit however. Hes a gamble. I would look elsewhere.

His English was too poor to understand and he did not convey the subject matter well at all. Questions were indirectly discouraged due to his tendency to state "Ok, pretty easy?" after finishing a point. I failed his class and took it the following summer and earned an A... this tells you something about the quality of his teaching.
Ya..goodluck. I regret taking this class.
All those who give him poor ratings are those who don't do homework! His accent is not that hard to catch, tell you the truth his accent is a lot better than some prof. in UC. Just pay attention to lectures and do your homework and try to get them right, not just to get them done, you will end up an A there.
Poor english and condescending. Assigns nightmares (he calls them homework assignments) every night. Good luck, you'll need it
Horrid example of at teacher, frown upon Palomar's decision to keep him on as a teacher semester after semester. I took his class and had to drop because I couldn't understand a word he said. For example he says Piss-wise instead of Piece Wise. We had to ask him to spell it on the board. I took it during the Summer and got an A. Take Dr. Cross.
his english is hard but u get used to it. Quizzes and tests are SO hard unless u eat, live, breath math. Doesn't give u enough time for them. I hope u LOVE proofs becuz he loves giving them. Once, a student asked him to do a problem, spent half the class going over it and ended up doing it all wrong.
Never had him, Never will take him. Had to ask him for help before while studying in the tutor lab, he seems to always take on a hostile tone of voice... doesn't make me motivated. I always end up frustrated with him/& math. Matthews and Alex are the most practical/to the point "go-to" guys when it comes to help from the tutor lab.
A good guy, but if you are not very computer oriented it will take you some extra work to understand the concepts. Make sure you have someone you can work with in the lab, otherwise you will spend some extra time on the computer. I strugled, but managed to get a B.
By far the worst teacher I have had at Palomar. He cant speak english very well. He assigned busy work homework each class. He gets upset if you ask him questions. I think only 13 out of 38 students passed the class and most were low C's. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Keep in mind math isn't my subject, but my gpa went from a 3.8 down to a 3.4 after i took this class.....you do the math.....i did the homework and studied...he's just not clear (his accent and teaching methods), and when you ask for help he uses a tone of voice that makes you feel stupid for just asking a question....look elsewhere...believe me.

Hard to understand. Unclear on subject. Makes you come back to class after taking a test for lecture.

He was impossible to understand. Gave long lectures. Was unclear on most of the subject. Gave us reviews for every test we took untill the final. Grades in general were good until his class was inputed.
impossible to learn from this guy. started semester with a full class of about 40 I think 18 finished. I could not understand him he assigns so much homework its easy to fall behind. Long boring lectures and tests are impossible to pass.
Prof. Nguyen is a difficult teacher, but you will leave the class with a firm understanding of Math. He offers a review before the tests and if you do it and the homework the tests aren't that hard. He really does seem to want you to succeed and makes himself very accesible. The only annoying thing is that he doesn't really give partial credit.
He is a great teacher. Just do your homework. If you had trouble on some, he'll do the problems on the board beginning of class. Provides many examples to help you understand the material better. Always reach him in the math labs before class. Highly recommended. Tests are easy.
not that bad, a nice guy over all...he collects homework day of test so get it done!..he also gives you a review sheet before the test which helps...not fabulous! but not bad!
Overall, a good teacher. Very flexible on exams. Small amount of homework. The exams are part in class and part take home, at least for 50min classes. It does take a while to get work back from him. Quizzes every other week (15min). VITAL YOU READ THE TEXT! It really helps a lot. Allows extra time for exams at math center. Reasonable.
he is a great teacher
i hated this class. hes hard to understand and never answered my questions.
Tests are 70% of your grade. Without saying anything else, that should be a red flag.
Hard subject, you must to do good on the tests. many people do not take advantage of his office hours, if you go to his office he will explain problems from previous tests so you can do well on the final
there are 4 tests that make/break your grade. Unfortunately he assigns a LOT OF HOMEWORK, but isn't due until the tests. He'll never let you out early and will even babble on nothing to keep you til the end when he give the assignment. Ask questions when you don't understand, even if he seems to talk down to you. Push through
Professor Nguyen is extremely helpful. He always answers questions and available to help. Pay attention and the class should be an easy A. He only tests what he mention in class. You get what you put in. Blaming the teacher for bad grade after a semester not doing any work make no sense.
really nice guy....but an awful teacher horrible accent can't understand him....and tests are impossible
One of the most unreasonable classes ever. Everything is rushed and you can't understand a word he says. He gives a ton of homework that isn't due until test day so procrastinators beware. Tests cover way too much information for the time he gives you. I STRONGLY recommend trying to find another teacher.
Hard Class. Got A in High School Calc and got barely a D in math 110...Very rushed tests, loads of HW, multiple sections a day. Don't take this class.
He is a really nice guy, but don't try to outwit or mock him. He is really helpful if you ask him. DON'T leave class early, it will cost you. A lot of homework, don't procrastinate, it really counts and practicing helps for the tests. 4 Exams that include much information. Attendance mandatory.
He has an accent but he's clear and explain very well. Ask him as much as possible for examples. He has a lecture class very traditional, sometimes he has a joke. Take this class seriously it isn't easy.
He is not a bad teacher, you have to study hard. He has an accent but he's clear and explain very well. Ask him as much as possible for examples. He has a lecture class very traditional, sometimes he has a joke. Take this class seriously it isn't easy.
a very boring class but is a nice teacher but can not teach math very well and puts problems on test that has not even been taught by him and expect you to pass.He also gives alot of homework!!
Watch out! He is a nice guy, but that does not mean that his class is easy. Homework is due on test day, so procrastinators should beware. He is available for help and answers questions in class. But you will have to fight for your grade. I did. Also the study for the final. It saved my grade.
alright
Professor Nguyen is difficult to understand. If you plan to take a math class with this professor, do not procrastinate on the homework. He is very nice, but does not explain everything in class. You must make the extra effort to get clarification. No extra credit. Barely helps students in the review session before the tests. Not recommended.
If you would like to have a large-scale setback in your math career, take this professor (hint). He was quoted saying this: "If I was better at golf and could make money at it, I would not be teaching this class." Just goes to show his commitment level.
Lots of homework, gives questions on tests that are beyond the scope of the class, not helpful. It's completely up to you.
He will wreak havoc on your grade if you don't know what you are doing. He's known to yell at students if they get a problem wrong.
If I could get a refund, I would definitely get one. Not recommended under any circumstance.
Professor Nguyen is a great instructor. I've taken him for this class and MATH 135 as well, but beware. His tests (at least in 141) go right up until class is out, barely leaving you enough time to finish, let alone double-check work. Myself, and the other 95% of the class, didn't finish at least 2 questions on the final because of no time.
The kindest prof that I've had at Palomar. He gives a lot of HW but his tests are easy and very well thought out. He is very understandable (unlike what's mentioned above). and he doesn't have the usual math teacher "ego". HIGHLY UNDERRATED!!!
This professor is good and I recommend taking his class if you are willing to do the work. The tests are moderately difficult and will "blow your mind." Much of the difficulty arises from the short time limit given to finish the test. There are take home tests that will "blow your mind" multiple times over. Do your homework or else you will fail!
Very, very under-rated professor. Clearly loves the subject that he teaches and loves it when students talk to him about anything even slightly math related. He did not give a whole lot of homework, and he is very clear when he speaks, despite his slight accent. I had no trouble understanding him whatsoever. If you genuinely want to learn the t
By far the best teacher every. He is very clear about everthing and nice. He gives a lot of homework but it makes your tests easier. You should join this class. Very good
This should be a 4 unit class. That said, Nguyen did a great job. Lectures clearly, assigns lots of homework. It's hard enough stuff that you may have to do the homework twice, or even (gasp) study. Tests are short, grading is fair. He has office hours and is very helpful. I recommend him.
He is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, and is always eager to answer questions and further student's understanding of the material. I've never had trouble understanding him, despite a slight accent. HW assignments consist only of what is necessary. Also, he's very funny if you take the time to understand his humor.
Don't be deceived by 3 units, you will be working like it is 4 units. He is good professor but the book he uses sucks.
I took his Class as one of the only high school students in the class. He is a hard teacher, but if you show up for his tutorials in the MD building you'll probably at least be able to get a B in the class. All the homework is based from the book, and lessons in his class often use the book. The final exam in his class is based on your old tests.
He was very difficult to follow and assigned about 3 hours of homework per night. He would get kind of frustrated when students would ask him questions which discouraged students from seeking help. He made a lot of mistakes. Students often had to correct him. I highly discourage anyone from taking his class. Very difficult!
A very very hard class, but I have to say he is fair in grading, test questions are fair.
How does a prof that offers his time to help in the math lab, e-mail, & phone calls get a rate like this? He's the traditional math teacher - no computers, just pen/paper/text. ASK FOR HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT (DUH). Math isn't supposed to be ez for every1. He's a 4+ quality prof, students always come to his office for help. He needs more credit.
Very easy class for math 60. He does uses the book a lot, also he gives out a lot of homework depends on how far the class is behind or not. He does give his time to his students to pass his class.
It's been a year since Nguyen's classes. I have transferred to a CSU (BS Math) and now I know: NGUYEN IS THE MAN. His classes are difficult but he is clear, fair, and helpful and I have learned so much from his classes! Calc II and linear are the hardest undergrad maths, and now they're my strong suits. If you're serious about math, take Nguyen.
He has to be the most underrated professor on this site! He is clear, kind, and helpful. He even had our classroom changed so there would be room for crashers like me. His class is not easy, but if you want to learn the subject well, I highly recommend him!
he is very kind just know that you will have to put in some kind of effort and dont forget to do the homework and ask questions and you basically are set
Sometimes his examples can be confusing, but he is always willing to clarify and help you. The homework load is alot, but as long as you try your best on the work, you'll recieve full credit. Total of 4 generally short tests that aren't too hard as long as you study. Overall, he's a decent professor.
Math sucks. But he's a cool guy he uses the book, a lot. And gives out a lot of homework but if your serious about math or actually want to learn it. He's the man. I sat in the front cause I was sick of failing math classes. If you ask he will definitely help you! He doesn't post anything online to keep track if your grades which is pretty annoying. & yes he does have a heavy accent but just focus do the work and study & you'll be fine...just like in any other class.
awesome!!! Math has never been my thing, but this is the one professor who actually pushed me. I will be taking STATS next semester and i wouldnt of done it without him. greatest math teacher i've ever had. Deserves more credit!!
He is an awesome man! He is so helpful and wants you to understand the material. He does give a lot of homework so make sure you do it after his class and it's pretty easy. It's important to ask questions if you don't get it and overall I left his class learning math!
Reasons to take him: 1. He is always willing to help. He is available for HOURS each day. 2. He rarely makes mistakes on the board even though he rarely refers to his paper (he knows his stuff). 3. He is fair in grading and assigns fun take home tests. 4. His classes will make you love math! Reasons not to take him:
Really clear in his examples and explanations, nice guy and can go to him if you need help.
Thick accent but easier to understand than you might think. Very clear, and precise.4 tests and a final. Tests are cake if you study for them, usually easier than expected. Homework is mandatory but not checked. I recommend doing it. Highly reasonable. an A is definitely attainable with Prof. Nyugen.
I would take him over any other math instructor at Palomar. His tests are difficult relative to some of the others, and they're quite long for the time allotted. He is however always willing to help. He has office hours and shifts at the math center. He'll explain anything you ask, and he's just a nice person overall.
He is very informative in his lectures and is willing to answer any question given to him. Has a rather thick accent but is understandable 98% of the time. He has a sense of humor. Mandatory homework but not checked (it's best to do it anyway). Sometimes doesn't finish lectures but does not usually testquiz on parts he did not go over in class.
Besides being a great teacher, hes extremely kind and sincerely cares about the success of his students. Having dealt with the physics program here, it makes me want to cry realizing that there is someone out there who supports us in a positive and constructive manner. Nguyen is a role model for how we should treat each other as human beings.
He has a think accent and sometimes it's difficult to understand him, but whatever topics he discusses, it's always covered in quizzestests. He assigns homework, but collects it during exam day. I feel like it would be better to collect each homework the next day
He's ok.
Awesome professor. Took him Fall 2013 for Calc 2, was really clear on everything. Also took him Spring 2015 for Linear Algebra, easy A with him. Simply a must take!
His explanation was so clear. whenever I ask many questions, he answered so kind and clearly. He is a nice teacher!
Would not recommend for students needing math help, he even mentioned he didn't even like his job and it showed. Classes are very very brief and speed up. Keeps saying you should know this. Doesn't even give a test review just says to look through certain chapters in book.
I suck at math and he was no help to me. He assigns lots of homework. He's hard to understand. He is really confusing and his tests usually don't have any of the info he talked about in class. I wouldn't take him if you struggle with math!
He cares about each student personally and is very open to help, but I got 5hrs. of homework each day (6 week course)
Many students here are complaining that he is hard to understand, I personally thought he spoke very clearly. Expect a lot of homework, granted I took Math 110 during the summer 6-week course. He grades VERY fairly. You will get credit for showing your work and following the proper steps even if you arrive at the wrong answer.
PROS: + Cares about every individual student's understanding ++ Great educator... trig is very difficult but he covers everything in depth CONS: -- Absolute TONS of homework!!!!! (I took the 6 week summer course) - LOTS of memorization (memorize entire trig table in first week and 35 identities in 2 weeks) - Seriously, be careful with the homework
I like this professor as a person, he seems nice, but his class this semester was utterly unorganized. He would rant about one topic for almost the whole class period and try to catch up right at the end. The blackboard page had very little on it, Grades were NEVER posted, and the schedule for tests and quizzes was always changing.
I think Calculus 2 is a tough topic to teach as it bridges 2d and 3d thoughts together. Also, it introduces so many concepts that don't really come naturally to most people. Professor Nguyen will help you anytime you need it, however you need. He is so smart, and amazing! You will of course need to take some responsibility and study on your own.
I know calculus is not an easy class but taking this professor would make it worse. lot of homework and which is ok but there is no point because his test/quizzes are completely different from hw. in addition, he has no control of the grades so you would have no clue. he do not respond emails. do not take him! I regret!
Super smart guy, knows the material, understands where students typically struggle and succeed. He never put in grades which makes it hard to track on your own time, but is willing to talk to you about your grade any time. The homework was very heavy, BUT I took a 6 week summer class. He has a sense of humor, but if you're lazy, you won't pass.
Good luck passing this class... worst class I've ever taken. Everyone dropped out of his class, because his lectures are heavy. He tries to cover 4 chapters per class. If you miss one class, you miss so much. He also has a thick accent which makes him difficult to understand at times.
Don't skip class with this one, as with any math class, you'll fall behind. I think he does a good job of teaching the material, puts in a simple way for everyone to understand and provides plenty of examples from the book. Even goes over any questions from the homework. There's a lot though. Quiz every week for the fast track class. Study for test
Theres a lot of homework and the class is very lecture heavy, but if you come to class and do the hw you will pass
I took the 6 week summer course and was lucky to get a teacher like Professor Nguyen. He explains the material with great clarity in limited time. I failed this class with another professor the previous semester when we had much more time. Show up to class, do as much homework as you can, and you will pass. It helps that he's a really kind person.
Overall, this prof wasn't too bad. He does have a bit of an accent, but it's not too hard to understand him. There's lots of homework and it's only worth 5 percent of your overall grade, but I would recommend doing it as it is great practice. He is not a tough grader as he gives you partial points for what you did correctly on tests and quizzes.
Cons: He has a light accent, makes a few mistakes per class when grinding through equations, and his tests will blindside you due to the difficulty level. However, in my opinion he is still a great teacher. He is willing to answer questions and he is thorough in explanations. If you work hard and study, you will succeed in this class.
Lectures were sometimes long, 10 minute break in between always helped. Prof. Nguyen would often pause the lecture to have us try a problem or two, and would walk around to help, answer questions, and correct students answers. I really liked that. Hes very nice, makes jokes, & doesnt mind when we correct his mistakes too. Tough grader on tests.
Really willing to help students who are trouble with difficulty. Homework is helpful for understanding. Lectures are clear and understandable.
