I thought her tests were very hard...it was difficult for me to digest the material. However, she does offer extra credit.
Dr. Howard's class covers difficult material and the tests are hard. She does help by grading on a curve, and if you want a good grade the extra credit is worth alot of points. I found enviro bio to be a worthwhile class.
Env. bio it was a fairly easy class. do the extra credit the extra credit really helps and you don't really need the book. I don't think I read a single chapter in it I went over her handouts and make sure to write in the margins of her handouts cause the test will cover the material that she talks about in class that arent on the notes
Good teacher if you don't miss the classes and always take notes!!
She is a pretty good teacher, but her tests can be difficult if you don't study. Study the handouts really good and you can pass the class and even get an A. Not recommended for education majors as easy biology class or A.
A fairly hard class, but it is a senoir level. I made 80's on everything and still made an A becouse of the extra cridit. She offers 25 points on top of you final adverage. Study harder for the extra credit than the test. If you show up to class you can pull a 60 or 70 without studying. Get 20 points added on, and presto there is your A :)
She teaches well but hardly to follow sometimes. If taking notes and miss no class, easy to get an A and extra credit as well. (but so hard on references). Anyway, class is boring
Great Topic but challenging and confusing delivery of material and teaching ability sometimes less than necessary to bridge the knowledge gap - seems too busy to take the time to capably teach all interested students at the same level (ie different disciplined individualsnon/granted staffers) miss this great opportunity to learn from the best
I had this teacher not only for classes but an advisor. Love her, she is the best. She is willing to work with you on just about anything that is legite. Study, she does want you to learn. Friendly and courteous.
Her lectures are easy to understand and her tests are fair. As long as you study your notes you will do fine. She gives pleny of opportunites for extra credit.
She will give you alot of opportunities for extra credit..about 20 possible points that can be added to your final grade! She provides you with the lecture notes. The tests are sraight from the notes..you only need the book for the extra credit problems. Easy A..just study her lecture notes and that's it!!
Great Class
All you need to do to get an A in Dr. Howard's class is STUDY her lecture notes. Dr. Howard is very personable & easy to talk to. She will work with you as long as she sees you trying.
Just study the notes. She says to read the chapters to get an A, but..I didn't and got an A. If you are pre-med, this material is so boring. Thus, take it in the summer to get it over with. She is nice and she shares her knowledge very well. She is passionate about the Ecosystem, so be prepared!
I've had her twice now, and will have her again in the spring. She is a great teacher. This is how a class is supposed to be, not an automatic A but not so hard you are beating your head against the wall. She is very helpful and very kind. She is also the one you need to talk to about going on the Brazil trips. Highly recomend her!
Great teacher! Very knowledgeable over the material and very passionate. If you are premed this class can be boring but she tries her heart out to capture the interest of all her students.
I have had her for many courses and as my advisor. She is extremely knowledgable, very helpful, but not a doormat. You have to study and work in her classes. But she honestly wants you to succeed and learn, so if you seek help, she'll bend over backwards to give it.
She is a Great Teacher! All you have to do is go to her class every week and study the lecture notes. She never uses the book, and gives a lot of potential extra credit. Overall a good teacher.
Super easy. She teaches off power point, and that's exactly what the test is over. The book is really clear if you don't go to class and don't understand the slides
Amazing Professor.. Never even bought the book. It is not needed. Everything is off her lecture powerpoints. Had family issues and she was so helpful on letting me make up test. I missed most of the classes. Just study powerpoints and you will pass. So nice!
Can be difficult to deal with as a grad adviser. She tends to change her mind a lot about your research and forget what she has told you in the past. Does not have an active lab & does very little research. She has only a couple of funded students and don't even dream of trying to become one. Can also hold a grudge if you disagree with her at all
Dr. Howard is a really good professor. She is passionate about the material she teaches and wants students to succeed. UHCL is lucky to have her.
Amazing professor! Super nice. Everything that was on the exam was on her powerpoint notes. Made lecture as interesting as possible. Easy as long as you study notes and listen to lecture in class. Highly recommend!
Great professor! she loves what she teaches and the material is crystal clear. didnt used the textbook at all.
She?s an ok teacher, but dumbs the class down too much for people who just don?t want to study. She totally glossed over almost all of the mathematical concepts of ecology that were presented in the book. Her lectures hit a lot of the fluffier topics but just didn?t delve very deep into the subject matter at all. Was really hoping for more.
Great Prof!
She?s an not a bad teacher but she glosses over details a lot and seems to get upset if you don?t get something right away. Her test questions can be unclear
field bio wasn't what I thought it would be. We spent too much time in class rather than out in the field doing hands-on learning.
Great professor. Loves what she teaches. Go to class & pay attention and it's easy to ace her exams.
She makes the class very interesting. Her exams are very clear, make sure you attend class, print the PP slides and take notes. Don't purchase the book, it's not needed. I really enjoyed this class.
Her class was easy, but it wasn't very enlightening. She made it so easy that it was pretty boring. Overall, didn't feel like I gained a lot in taking this course.
An easy A. I was shocked that she gave open-book tests in a grad-level class. The problem is that I don't feel like I learned all that much. She seems like a nice person, but I don’t think she is a great prof
I really enjoyed her class. She is a pleasure to work with. Material is relevant to real life and I DID NOT get open book tests. I had to work for my grade. I would take her again in a heartbeat. She is passionate about her work and I admire her enthusiasm. Take her if you like human professors that respect you.
She is an awesome teacher; however, I am NOT a science major so I had a difficult time. She offers 3 test with optional makeup/replacement final. Study the powerpoints and go to class. She will keep you most of the time. She has a passion for science and I love that about her.
Professor Howard is a very nice lady who offers a ton of extra credit. My only problem with her was the fact that her lectures were very long, very boring, and very information-filled. She has no reviews for the tests either. The graphs she gives in lecture are so un-informative and yet she tests over them. Studied so hard and I got a B. Good luck.
Tests were kinda tricky, but she is overall very pleasant.
Her lectures are incredibly long and boring. You ask her what to study for the final and she says to study all notes, that's over 1000 powerpoint slides. she makes her tests extremely difficult, every detail in her notes matter. Asked to look over previous exams for final and she said you cant look over them at the end of the semester. hated class
I took Dr. Howard this summer for the 5week face 2 face. She was fair and offered 2 opportunities for extra credit. Her exams were reasonable though there was alot of material covered each unit. If you actually read and studied the material often you could get an A. I would definitely take her for another course. She really cares about her students
Dr. Howard is a very fun professor. Ecology isn't the most fun subject but she makes it bearable with her jokes. 3 tests and an optional final to replace lowest grade. Every DETAIL matters. That's the downside to the class. Save your money and don't buy/rent the textbook, Slides she provides is all you need.
Doesn't tell you what to study, memorize ALL the slides.
This class requires 100% memorization of the 200-300 slides- tiny concepts are tested. There were test questions that she never even went over.
only 3 grades!! tests have a lot of information. i studied power points a lot. curved all tests which was great. gave 2 extra credit opportunity, definitely take advantage of this. she is very kind and responds well to email.
I've taken several of Dr. Howard's classes and she is amazing. Her test can be hard if you don't know the material. It's not about memorizing the slides, it about really understanding the concepts.
THE WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN! If you want to fail take her. She gives 0 reviews tests are SO HARD even with studying, makes the class so boring and so uneasy to understand. Had about 50-60 people within the first 2 months now theres barely 25 people in the class. Expect to study your brains out and still fail
Dr Howard is very friendly and approachable and is passionate about teaching. However, the exams are very difficult and pretty detail-orientated. I always walked in feeling confident about the exams and left unsure of passing. There's only 3 grades for this class Exam1,2,3. No HW although I think it would be beneficial and a good way to help study
Great teacher, have had her for many classes at UHCL. She's difficult to get in touch with via email because she's so busy. Clear about grading criteria, and the tests are specific and tough, but she gives a lot of opportunity for extra credit via "note sheets" that you can use on tests. TAKE HER! She's worth it!
Dr. Howard uses her experience to deliver an incredible amount of information in a short amount of time. There is no guesswork with her: she tells you exactly what you need to do to be successful in her class. She is willing to o above and beyond for students willing to put in the extra effort to truly be successful inside and outside of class.
Dr. Howard is awesome! She really cares about her subject and students and it shows in class. She is always willing to help.
This class was pretty rote and not very interesting if you know anything at all about environmental biology. She seems bored teaching it, which isn't good. And don't dare to point out her mistake if she grades your test incorrectly. Her apparently fragile ego won't abide that at all.
I'm an environmental science student, so I wanted to take this class, but it was awful. Wish there were someone else I could've taken but she's the only one. Howard didn't explain the concepts very well or in much detail.
She's not a very good instructor. She seems annoyed by questions, doesn't seem that into the subject matter, and isn't very good at relaying her knowledge. Most students sat in class and screwed off on their phones. I got more from reading the book, which she didn't even reference.
Dr. Howard has been the most influential professor in my time at this school. She has a true passion in teaching for environmental studies. If you show up to class, listen to what is said, and concept the material, it is an easy A. Everything that is on her slides, will be on the test. The point is to understand the material, not memorize slides.
Lectures were pretty brutal. I don't know if she's just waiting for retirement, but she seemed like she was just going through the motions. Don't buy the books. You won't use them, but thanks to her I wasted about $100 that I didn't need to.
Lectures were incredibly boring. And long. And tiresome. And boring. This wasn't a hard class, but I did expect to get more out of it. Don't buy the books if you want to save money.
Took Dr. Howard for both Ecology and Environmental Biology. She makes things unnecessarily difficult by focusing too much on her past experiences in lectures (i.e. Amazon Rain Forest) and stresses mathematical formulas. Wish I took Minton instead for Ecology as I struggled in a class that should have been a breeze. Lectures are long and boring.
Dr. Howard is an amazing professor and mentor. I had the pleasure of taking two classes with her and I wish that I could have taken more. She's quick to help you if you have questions and is very receptive to feedback. She's the reason all of the pre-med students switch to Environmental Biology.
People who have been involved in her lab all seem to regret it.
I dont recommend her at all if you dont like or cant process information fast and a lot of it. There is no cheat paper or notes you can use during her exams. So dont take her if you cant handle information overload. There's also only 3 grades!!! All exams!!!!!
I didn't like her teaching. I bought the book, only to find out that everything was taken straight from the PowerPoints, and I didn't need the stupid book. Plus, the slides seemed really old, like she's been using them for a long time without any updates. It was an easy class, but it also felt pretty pointless.
This was her first time online class. Two online tests 350 points based on powerpoints and notes. They were short answers and essays, 2 hours was not enough, do not copy paste, discussions and summarize 2 primary articles on effect and sources of microplastics. Do not drop the class even if u are failing, she will work with you.
Howard seems nice on the surface, but she's not what you think she is. I regret going the Neotropical Rainforest Ecology class trip to Brazil.
Power points and notes dont help
She's a great teacher and really cares about the environment! If you read her power points and show up for the live lectures (Zoom meetings), you'll pass without hesitation. The key is to pay attention and retain the information.
I didn't enjoy her teaching style. She gets annoyed with questions during class, and seems to take offense when men ask them, like she thinks we're trying to show her up when we're just trying to understand the material rather than memorize it. I'm an older student, and I think that made her think I did not respect her authority.
tons of studying in a short amount of time. she gives extra credit, however, does not fully give you all the points which is not fair. overwhelmed by the amount of information in slides and notes. they didnt help with her exams. questions on exams were confusing by the way they were worded
I have mixed feelings but in this class you really have to study every lecture and notes she puts on blackboard . If you miss class she usually records her lectures from zoom and puts it on blackboard so you won't miss anything. She gives opportunities for extra credit. The exams are hard but if you studied you will be okay.
Very boring lectures and goes pretty fast through the "100" slides a class. Does not give an exam review, you basically have to memorize all the lecture slides. Only THREE grades throughout the whole entire semester which is the three tests you will take. DO NOT RECOMMEND
Dr. Howard is a great professor. Her lectures are comprehensive. The class is only based on 3 grades, so studying and preparing for exams is very important. Great class!
This class is a lot of material and is a lot of reading but is relatively easy. The grading criteria is very clear and straightforward. She is very knowledgeable in the subject matter and was very approachable. If you don't like the material it could be boring, but I found it fascinating! Review alot before exams. All info is on powerpoints.
To me, the class was boring. Lots of information to memorize. Wished she gave us a review or at least questions to practice before exams. Did give extra credit at the end of the course so that was sweet.
Cindy Howard is a precious gift to this planet. Her lectures are excellent. She is hilarious and kind. I've had her for 4 classes now and loved all of them. Her lecture exams are very difficult, but she offers lots of opportunities for extra credit. If you participate and ask questions in class, she will bump your grade at the end of the semester.
This class is only difficult due to there not being any homework or quizzes in the leadup to exams. Memorize the lectures as best as you can and you should do ok.
It's been a few years and I still remember everything this woman taught me. She was kind, supportive, and direct, all qualities I admire. She genuinely cares and ensures the course prepares you for your next steps. For me that next step was grad school, and the work I put into her class helped me tremendously in my graduate work. Thank you Dr. H
Took her for ecology and environmental toxicology. Please try to take someone else if you can! She thinks everyone wants to be toxicologist or ecologist and teaches as such. The tests have almost nothing to do with stuff she mentions in class. No test review. Basically. Asks trick questions on the test.
Dr. Howard is amazing, her score shouldn't be so low! She let all students makeup the points they missed on the first report outline. She put together a handout titled "issues encountered on Exp 1 report outline" and went over it with us before allowing us to correct our reports for all points missed. Take her, you'll regret it if you don't!!
Dr. Howard is great, the reviews don't line up with her actual classes. She was extremely fair in her grading criteria and even offered extra credit. There are tests AND QUIZZES which are helpful in boosting your grade. I am not fond of ecology but found the class interesting from her.
She is a very nice teacher. 3 exams but gives extra credit opportunities of up to 50 pts. I would say for the exams some material wasn't present in the textbook or the slides. However, it's easy to pass you only need to hit 210 pts to pass with a C. I would take this teacher for an easier load off homework but prepare to study for a good grade.
She goes really slow through the slides, which I disliked. This class is only graded by 3 exams only, 300 pts total, with the exception of 2 extra credit opportunities worth 45 pts total. She makes the final optional, with the chance to replace your lowest exam grade.
Professor Howard seemed very kind and genuinely interested in the material which always makes for a better learning experience. The in-person classes were optional and exams were online. The only downside was that aside from 2 extra credit options, the class is only graded on a few exams which can weigh heavily.
Invaluable instruction with encouragement and an expectation that challenged me. The most influential professor in my career.
The professor is okay, pretty boring though. A big reader and takes forever to finish her PowerPoints when they shouldn't take that long. Her tests are very focused on small details from the PowerPoints. Wish I just took her online and saved my time. Offers a lot of extra credit, which you will need if you can't focus in a boring class.
Dr. Howard is an amazing professor who engages with the class and does her best to make it fun and interesting to her students. 3 test grades for the course with ample opportunity for extra credit. Be sure to watch the videos assigned for outside of class as the tests do pull questions from them. And ask questions if you don't understand something!
As long as you pay attention in class you will be perfectly fine on the exams. She typically offers at least 10% of your grade as basically free extra credit assignments. I have taken her for multiple classes and wish I could have taken her for more. She will even help with choosing courses to take. Her help was MUCH better than my advisors.
