very nice; uses helpful and funny examples to better understand concepts
She's a great teacher, I learned a lot, even though I talked a lot. I'd recommend her class to anyone. She's understanding and funny--makes boring philosophers interesting. Be prepared to discuss though!
Very helpful. Encourages opinions and major class discussions. Can get difficult but try to keep up with reading and talk to her a lot and you will do well. Learned sooooo...much from her.
A great teacher. Her tests are kinda hard, but if you go to class and keep up it's good times. She makes stuff really interesting. I got a B+ because of the extra credit I did. Also, she's kinda hot in a hippie, maternal kinda way.
She is hilarious. If you just watch her mannerisms and pay attention to what she says you will be laughing hysterically.
Dr. Curtis is amazing! She makes boring material interesting. Class participation is a must; however reading the sparknotes will get you by. She's a really nice woman who loves what she does. Wonderful class, take it if you can!
She's a great discussion professor. I would highly recommend her.
Great teacher- great discussions!
Curtis is AWESOME...she is funny, nice, understanding, and all out womderful. Her class is very interesting, pAPERS AND TESTS- go to class and take notes
Dr. Curtis is awesome! I had her for 250 and liberalism and have learned so much from her. Her enthusiasm makes class interesting and fun and she really encourages students to examine a variety of viewpoints.
She is a really nice lady. She makes some really boring material interesting, and you really don't need to read in order to pull off a B. Just make sure you take good lecture notes, her tests mostly come from them.
I loved her and I loved this class. Very interesting. The papers weren't too difficult to read and she explained all the reading we did. Plato can a little confusing, but she clears up any misunderstandings.
Very informative class! Dr. Curtis is absolutely one of the top five professors on campus. It should be a required GenEd to take one of her classes!
She's the best. Dr. Curtis is brilliant, but not over your head. She can "dumb it down" for you when you're not following. I highly recommend taking any of her courses, you will not be disappointed.
Dr. Curtis is a great teacher and she makes her classes fun and interesting. She gives plenty of extra credit options to bring your grade up - all you have to do is participate in and out of class.
Dr. Curtis kicks ass. She's kinda hot in that earth mama way, too. Take her for any class you can. She's very intelligent but not arrogant.
Great, enthusiastic, entertaining. One of my favorite classes. Reading is not too much, but get acquainted with Plato, because you will read him a lot!
This woman is fantastic! Shes a little nutty, but nice. Its a tricky course, but she is a leniant grader and goes out of her way to help you to understand. Unlimited Extra Credit. No Attendance Policy. TAKE HER!!!!
Dr. Curtis is great and completely brilliant! The class is difficult enough so that you learn something, but the workload won't kill you. Dr. Curtis will look over all papers ahead of time and is very helpful.
She's the smartest prof I've had.
She is really amazing. I have learned so much from her and plan to take another course with her. I wasn't interested in the material in the begining but she connected all the ideas for us. take any class with her that you can.
Awesome teacher, very earthy and funny
The class is extremely difficult by nature, but Dr. Curtis does her best to make it as painless as possible. Read the book chapters and then review them again before class. P.S. she pretty much knows the class sucks, so she includes a few grade boosters.
She is very intelligent, but I never understood what the hype about her teaching style was. Either way, though, she's very helpful, and if you have time for out-of-class participation, then you have plenty of opportunities for extra credit.
Dr Curtis is probably one of the smartest profs I've ever had. She's willing to discuss things with you as much as you need to get it, and she's always available outside class. Quirky sense of humor and dressing style. Take her classes! They're the best.
Extremely nice and smart. However, this class will make you hate Socrates. She likes to employ his method of teaching and it can often leave you bewildered.
She is one of the sweetest and most intelligent profs. here. She will go out of your way to help you and will allow paper extensions. TAKE HER!
She's really cool and helpful, and i chose her to be my advisor, but don't count on an easy class. Some of the stuff she says in class makes your head hurt. She lets you revise essays though, and extra credit opps.
Great professor! Not an easy class... but its still fun. Professor Curtis is very helpful and understanding. Gives extentions on essays if you ask . I would recomend this class.
She is awesome and definately one of the most intelligent people that I have ever met. Alot of reading, but you do not actually have to read it to get a good grade.
Dr. Curtis is good teacher, very helpful, allows extensions as well as revisions on papers. Class mandates alot of reading, however the reading is interesting. There are only 2 papers.
I loved the reading, although it was a bit much. I picked the stuff that was interesting and ignored the stuff I knew I wouldn't like. Be ready to read the Republic :)
Interesting class. There is a lot of reading, but everything is explained. After about a month I stopped doing the readings and relied just on her notes and class discussions. You have chance to improve your papers as much as you want. Shes very intelligent and helpful. Take her.
Claire is great to work with if you are thinking of doing an independent study.
Dr. Curtis is the one of the best professors at the college. She will do anything to help her students, and she is amazing at explaning anything. Her liberalism class isn't like her 250 class though, you've got to read this stuff, be even if you don't understand it, she'll break it down very well for you. TAKE THIS CLASS
Flighty lady who talks in circles & criticizes the very system that has permitted her to live off the government teat; her method of grading quizzes is unbelievable. Dramatization: "Identify the letter 'c' [gee, this isn't ambiguous]"; Response: "The letter after B and before D." Feedback: "-3 points: didn't mention it is five letters before H!"
I <3 Dr. Curtis. This woman can explain the driest, most obscure passages in the most direct, sensical ways. She challenges you to think and is willing to give extensions on papers. Take this class if you're not afraid to read and challenge yourself!
Dr. Curtis is by far one of my favourite professors here at the college. I don't believe the post that she criticized the government in class. She may have presented a criticism of the gov't, but then she may turn around and present with the same vigor the opposing philosophy. She's an amazing actress and you never know what she personally believes
If you get the opportunity to take her for discussion with Dr. Newell take it! Because not only is she very helpful at breaking things down but she also does this wonderful thing where she flings a pen at Dr. Newell for being a **** pig. Its great, especially when she steals a pen to do it!
Dr. Curtis is one of the most amazing women I have ever met, and she makes Western Civ. rock! Dr. Newell is a misogynistic pain, and Curtis lets him know it. She is very open minded and extremely well versed in the subject matter (politics, literature, history, philosophy-you name it and this woman has it down). For your own improvement, take her!
One of the best teachers I have had at C of C.
omg prof curtis is AMAZING!!!!! considering civ is probably the worst class EVER(!!!!!), she makes you want to come to class and learn the material. by no means is the class easy, you definitely have to work, but she makes you want to learn the material. definitely take her!!!!!!
Hard class, but Professor Curtis is fantastic. She explains everything so it is as easily understandable as can be and is always happy to meet with you outside of class if you have any questions. Not an easy grader by any means, but she's an absolutely fantastic professor and as helpful as can be.
Curtis is an amazing teacher! she really cares about what she teaches. 250 is hard, but she makes it interesting. lots of papers, but she's really helpful. take her!
I will keep my opinion short and give you practical advice. She is very interesting and we usually enjoy her class. NOW, take good notes for exams, do not miss more than once or twice before an exam, give lots of textual evidence in the papers, always cite sources to perfection, and get those papers out of the way before the end of the year!
amazing teacher, really interesting class discussions. a lot of reading, but just take good notes in class and you'll be fine. tests are hard, two hard papers. definitely worth it, class is always fun and interesting
What a great professor! Claire is interesting, helpful, and brilliant, and really breaks down the professor-student relationship so you don't feel dominated. Take her classes, and sign up for a WGST internship if you can!
Absolutely love Prof. Curtis and would definitely recommend her to anyone taking a POLS class at the college. She's a whirlwind of thoughts but she's helpful and funny! Her class really isn't too hard, and she gives tons of extra credit opportunities and allows paper rewrites! Take her class!
The College should be proud to have Claire. She's an amazing professor and a lovable person. She has so much to say and care so much for her students. POLS 250 isn't hard, and she makes it fun and interesting. One of my favorite courses this year, I'll definitely be looking for more courses with her!
She is so smart and lovely. I was not very interested in the class topic, but she taught me so much from everyday personal decision making to law theories. Class was very interesting. Do your reading and start papers early.
Curtis is one of the best professors I have had at C of C. She is smart, funny, and clearly passionate about utopia/ dystopia/ postapocalyptic fiction - she wrote a book, its great, you should buy it. The class itself is a lot of fun, especially when everyone participates in discussion, which is how the class is run; she rarely lectures. Take her
Great teacher very entertaining and helpful. Wants you to get a good grade!
Absolutely amazing professor! Some people will never enjoy political thought but even if you don't, she keeps it interesting. Excited about taking her contemporary liberalism class next semester!
Prof Curtis is amazing! I was NOT interested in political sci but decided to take the FYE Engaging Charleston course that was taught half the time by her regardless. And I'm so glad I decided to take it! She got me so interested in poli sci and makes me want to further take interest. You can't be a slacking student but you don't have to be genius
Poli Thought is a tough subject and can be very dry. She made it much better though and keeps the students engaged and interested. The hw readings were very hard but every class went over them and described every detail. Gave a great study sheet and you can pretty much know what will be on the test. Really kind and will help you if you ask!
I'm pretty sure Dr. Curtis could take over the world if she wanted to (she's so smart). Unfortunately, I am not as smart as she is, so I had to work for everything. Readings aren't too long but you need to really focus when reading them. She gives study guides, so prepare for any tests. Papers can be challenging and she's a tough grader. Good class
First off: This woman is just a straight up phenomenal human being. So sweet. So smart. So funny. Too beautiful, too pure for this world. She will do everything in her power to help you even if you're like, the worst human/student. Took her for my capstone and got an A. TAKE HER UTOPIA/DYSTOPIA class if possible. Lifechanging.
An awesome professor, very down-to-earth. You learn a lot of good information in this class, many other classes actually can relate s from this class. Do not miss her classes, she has a bit of a strict attendance rule.
Take Professor Curtis!! She is so amazing and you will learn so much. She is an amazing teacher.
She is incredibly smart, which means that she sees right through you if you are writing fluff in essays. She allows you to rewrite essays and gives great feedback if you send it to her in advance. Her class is challenging and fun, and I would definitely take her again. Amazing professor and amazing class.
She is incredibly smart, which means that she sees right through you if you are writing fluff in essays. She allows you to rewrite essays and gives great feedback if you send it to her in advance. She loves class participation, the class is challenging and fun, and I would definitely take her again. Amazing professor and amazing class.
The class is hard to follow but she is a great professor. Two tests, two papers, attend three events and write responses. Lots of reading but it is all talked about the next day in class. Following the lectures is all you need to do well.
Professor Curtis is a fantastic professor. The material she covered was always well explained and engaging. She's a little scatterbrain but not to the point where it's hard to follow her. She gives you plenty of room to work papers and homework into your schedule and is always willing to explain something that you don't get. A real gem.
CLAIRE CURTIS IS THE BEST PROFESSOR AT COFC. She ALWAYS gives good feedback, makes you feel so heard in class, and is soooo approachable. I've had her twice and she was also my advisor and I cannot say enough about how great she is! I love discussion based classes, so I may be biased lol, but she rocks. 10/10
Curtis is an AMAZING professor! Gives great feedback and is sooo understanding. She is willing to work with you and her in class discussions were always fun. She is awesome!
Professor Curtis was the professor I had for my FYE, "Climate Fiction and the Possibility of Justice." Not the class I thought it was going to be, but I enjoyed it. Word of advice--rent the books, don't buy. And read thoroughly. She had great lectures, but she relies heavily on feedback and participation. Had lots of papers, but no tests or quizzes
Prof. Curtis is a great teacher who cares about her students just be ready to write essays, with every test theres an essay. But, overall amazing teacher who is ready to work with you if anything is impacting your progress.
I had her for my FYE and felt that the class was much more difficult from what I was hearing about other FYEs. She was a good professor and it was definitely an interesting course, I just felt that it was a lot of work for an FYE
If you like discussions, then you might like her. Extremely disorganized, treats you like a child, loves attention, lacks creativity, and was an awful introduction to the college for me. You are graded by little and you have in-class writing for essays. Too much work for such an awful prof. DO NOT TAKE HER.
I would definitely recommend taking professor Curtis. She's a very chill grader, there's been no tests -- only quizzes which she well prepares you for. A few essays and writings but nothing too difficult. Lecture heavy but she makes it interesting.
Her lectures were actually interesting and she was very passionate about them. You can tell Dr. Curtis cares about her students, and as long as you put a little effort in her and study before quizzes, you'll do good.
Dr. Curtis is a phenomenal instructor. Politcal theory can be uninteresting, but not with Dr. Curtis. She is litterally the sweetest, funniest Poli professor I have taken so far at the college. Proessor Curtis is very accessible outside of class too. TAKE HER class!!!
She is an amazing professor. The FEW negative reviews she has are from freshmen just entering college. If you'd take a second and read them, you'll see. YES, Dr. Curtis expects you to WORK, welcome to college, kids. Did you expect to not have to do anything here? Just do your readings nightly and participate in class...it was an easy B to earn.
Worst professor
Professor Curtis is a great professor. She is incredibly nice, intelligent, and flexible. If you want to succeed, definitely don't skip class even though it's not mandatory. For an A, you definitely have to do the assigned readings. Although she calls them quizzes, you really have to study for them. I would definitely recommend her for POLI 150!
Dr. Curtis is my favorite professor I have had at COFC. Her class (which is supposed to be boring) was so interesting and entertaining because of her! She is so passionate about philosophy and wants us to understand why. I loved Dr. Curtis and 100% recommend her. As long as you put in minimal effort you will do amazing!
Love, love, love her. If you like to talk then take her classes. She is very into class discussion and it is so much fun. The students basically lead every class. There are a lot of papers and quizzes, but if you study just a little you will be perfectly fine. Very interesting class and very interesting professor.
very engaging lectures. she is very knowledgable. reading assigned but I didn't do it bc the classes taught the material. 3 papers, very harshly graded. in person term/passage/story quizzes, all free response, less harshly graded. 3 lecture events/final exam. the content is interesting, leans philosophical. she is easy to reach and accommodating.
Listen, Dr. Curtis is either disliked or liked. There is no in-between. I hatedhow she would put stuff on PowerPoints as we talked about them instead of actually lecturing. She has us do quizzes and reading responses, which are fine. She is also flexible and if you need to make something up, she will help you. I wouldn't recommend her for POLI150.
Curtis is a great professor. 150 was very heavy on reading and had lots of written, in-class tests and quizzes. They're manageable if you pay attention and show up. I didn't do a lot of the readings and was fine.
Great professor overall, your lowest quiz grade gets dropped, super knowledgeable about political philosophy, and you can tell she has a lot of love for what she does!
Professor Curtis is so amazing, drops ur lowest quiz grade, super accommodating and you can tell she loves what shes teaching, she makes it super easy to understand. As long as you take good notes and go to class your set. The final was pretty easy too as long as you take the time to learn the philosophers. Would high suggest her!
She is so sweet, but she says, and I quote, "I will never give a 100 to a paper because it can always be better." Only a couple of people in my class received an overall grade of an A, and this quote just shows a bit about how she grades.
Prof Curtis is amazing. She really cares about what she's teaching and is super engaging. New readings for pretty much every class, but she'll go over all the important stuff in class. For the tests, I'd suggest looking at the slides and comparing the different philosophers, and writing as much as possible. DON'T USE AI FOR ANYTHING!!
