She's an awesome professor! She's so funny! She's also very good at explaining the lesson. You can tell she's very passionate about what she does and she wants to share that with you. Definitly read the book because you have a chapter quiz every week but you have 3 attempts. Everything is easy if you read and pay attention. Awesome class overall.
the textbook she wrote this semester is impossible to understand. her tests questions are way too difficult and are about small little things she wrote in the textbook. honestly this class is a lot more difficult than i expected
I love her. She's got an awesome Irish accent and makes psych so easy to understand. I failed high school AP psych but this class makes so much sense. She wrote the textbook so she really knows what she's doing. You must be in class to do the daily clicker questions though. Definitely recommend!!
Decent amount of reading and quizzes but it's not hard. If you go to class, do the homework, and study a little bit an A is easily attainable. But, get ready to read the textbook and go to class.
Claire is a really knowledgeable professor; it's obvious that she knows what she's talking about and she explains things in a very clear way. She's a quirky, kinda funny Irish woman. The class is pretty average for a gen ed- you have to read the text book every night in order to know what's going on and you have to show up to class. Would recommend
Attendance is mandatory for clicker questions. Quizzes for each chapter that are open book. Group activities in class which your graded on. Grade mostly relies on clicker questions, quizzes, and tests which are HARD if you don't study for them. Lyons really does care about students learning the materials and she's always open to answering questions
This class was definitely not my favorite. I dont have a problem with Dr. Lyons, but you have to attend lectures for clicker questions and HAVE TO READ to do well on quizzes & exams. She wrote the book herself and being honest, the woman cannot write. The readings are painful & hard to absorb info from, but her lectures aren't bad & help to clarify
I have had friends take Professor Lyons in the past and suggested her. They said she was an easy A and she was an amazing lecturer. But she changed the course up completely, she wrote her own textbook that had grammatical errors in it and was hard to keep up with. It was not an easy class and almost all of the lectures were boring.
Overall, this class was not bad. Dr. Lyons is caring and wants students to do well. The lectures can be a bit boring and you definitely have to read the textbook for the tests (some questions are exact details from the book which can be difficult). It was a manageable though, I'd recommend taking it
I put a moderate amount of effort into this class and did pretty well. She has many opportunities and assignments for you to maintain a good grade. Tests are a little challenging but if you study you will be fine. Her textbook is the key to the course, if you read and comprehend the book you will do good. 160 was interesting and Claire was great.
I would not say this class is an easy A, not many college courses are. There is a lot of reading but if you actually do the reading and take notes you should be fine. The material is really interesting and I loved the class! I would definitely recommend this class.
Claire is a great Psyc160 professor. Your grade is based on a mixture of online quizzes (so you have to read a bit outside of class), exams (3 total + final), and clicker questions. Clicker questions are graded for accuracy and you cannot use any electronics in her class. The tests are straight forward and the final is cumulative. Easy overall.
I love Claire so much!! Her lectures are clear and she uses many examples, videos, activities etc. to make sure you understand the material. She has clicker questions everyday so you need to go to class. You use the textbook a lot, but she wrote the textbook so it matches up perfectly with her lectures. Definitely take this class
Claire was funny and a really great professor. If you invest time into the course it is very rewarding. Claire wrote the textbook we used for the course, so she knows the material extremely well. She is very helpful in office hours. I recommend her. The class was hard but it was worth it.
Lyons was outstanding! She makes the class very interesting. Weekly online reading quizzes with multiple attempts on each. Test are fair but you need to make sure to read the chapters. If I could take this class again I for sure would.
Claire is awesome! She is helpful and made this class interesting with Mean Girls references. She takes up a lot of grades, so it is pretty easy to get an A. As long as you show up to class to get your clicker points and do the readings, you will be fine in this class. Claire and the TAs have office hours, so help is very accessible if needed!
Lectures are kinda boring, but there's a lot of grades which is nice. Class isn't necessarily mandatory, but there's clicker questions (worth 12%) every class so if you want a good grade you have to go. Tests are surprisingly difficult compared to the weekly online quizzes which are easy. The textbook is written by her and its a fairly easy read.
Lyons is a great teacher and really cares about what she teaches. You just read a chapter a week and take an online quiz, there are in class assignments and tests. She really makes sure that you understand the material and is really easy to talk to and understand. Would def take her!
Lyons makes sure her students do well by adding in tons of clicker questions, chapter quizzes through canvas, and through her lectures. If you come to class, pay attention, take good notes, read the one chapter/week, and study a little before tests you will be golden in this class. 3 tests, 1 cumulative final, weekly chapter quiz. Great for gened
Claire Lyons is by far the best professor I have had here at JMU. Read the chapters and take good notes and you should be fine. She really cares about her students and is willing to help whenever possible! Showing up to class is vital because of how many clicker questions she asks. I loved this class!!
Dr. Lyons is my favorite professor and she wrote her own textbook which makes her quizzes super easy as long as you read the chapter. Clicker was used a lot and that meant easy points. She is so funny and sweet and is always smiling. As long as you pay attention its an easy A!
Claire Lyons was a great professor. She has a really cute Irish accent! You can tell she really cares about her students. Her lectures were very enjoyable and interesting. The weekly quizzes and tests were challenging but not impossible if you study hard. You HAVE to attend class because she does a lot of graded clicker questions.
Claire is the best! She teaches in a way that made psychology easy to understand. I am so glad I chose her as my professor. She uses clickers for participation and review, and gives an online timed quiz each week. Read the book (that she wrote) and you'll be fine.
Claire is awesome! You HAVE to go to class because there are lots of clicker questions which are very helpful and similar to the test questions. I read every single page of the textbook and took detailed notes. There are online quizzes for every chapter and you can use your notes. I found the subject interesting so it made the reading less painful.
Claire Lyons is one of the best teachers I have this semester! She makes psychology very interesting and answers questions throughout class if students don't understand. Grade is made up of clickers, chapter quizzes (taken online), a few homework assignments, 3 tests and the final.
Claire is awesome. Though PSYC160 is a 300 person class, she really makes an effort to be easily accessed and answer any questions that you may have. Her class is not easy, but if you put in the work, you will do well.
Claire is very organized, this is helpful for studying and learning the material thoroughly. Be prepared to read a whole textbook and fully understand it, otherwise, you won't pass. You have to put the work into this class to get a good grade. Claire can be a jerk sometimes, so don't play on your phone/talk during class. She'll call you out.
I loved this class. Her weekly quizzes aren't too bad and can really help your grade. She uses a lot of lecture material for tests so participation is key but you won't mind because it is an interesting class. Clickers everyday. Cool accent. Tons of office hour opportunities and multiple extra credit assignments.
She is a super nice woman. She does clicker questions but they are so easy. Tests are not bad as long as you do the review questions. Overall, super nice and straightforward you can easily get an A or B.
As long as you read the book and pay attention, you'll get an A.
She has clicker questions that she uses for attendance, but other than that she was a really good professor.
For a genEd cluster 5, Lyons is one of the best choices. She may seem intimidating at first, but once you talk to her, it's not bad at all. You can tell that she really cares about your learning and success and is always happy when you come to office hours. Her study strategy helped me not just in PSYC, but overall. She can be funny at times too.
Clicker questions are done ever class (as attendance and points), her lectures are clear and easy to follow. Have to read the textbook (1 chapter per week) bc there are weekly online quizzes. A few hw assignments throughout the semester but they are extremely easy. Definitely would recommend! Easy A if you do the work!
Prof Lyons is a sweet irish lady. She wrote the textbook and its super boring. Her lecture is just redundant snippets of the textbook but you answer clicker questions for credit so going to class is a must. Clickers are easy, repetitive and waste class time. Its not hard to get an A as long as you read thoroughly, but I felt like I learned nothing
Easily the best teacher I've had. Very organized class, gives a couple extra credit assignments. Fair with her grading, goes by the book. Tons of grades. I mean tons. You know what you're being tested on every time. Some group worksheets you do with your seat neighbors-just pick good students to sit with. All answers are in book/tests are open book
This class wasn't too bad, although at times I thought it was a little extra for being a gen ed. You have to read the textbook; there's a chapter quiz every week. Clicker questions every class for a grade but she drops one (so one free skip). Tests can be tricky if you don't prepare properly. Study/show up, you should do well!
This was one of the few gen eds I took freshman year that I was genuinely interested and received an A in! Definitely recommend lyons for psyc160. Way easier than 101.
Professor Lyons is one of my favorite professors at JMU. She really makes sure everyone understands a topic before moving on and provides participation clicker questions to help aid understanding. She is an incredible teacher and is a caring individual. I would love to have her as a professor again.
Quizes, and tests are straight. Pre-lecture quizzes and post-lecture quizzes are a thing, but are easy grade boosters. Easy A-
Professor Lyons is one of the best professors I have had at JMU. She is passionate about the information which makes the class so much easier to be interested in. There are 4 tests including a final, and pre lecture quizzes every week. Other than that that there aren't many grades. 100% would take her class again.
Professor Lyons is the absolute best. She's hilarious, sweet, and very clear about the coursework so you are never blindsided. Getting an A is completely doable as long as you stay on top of the work and study for the tests. Theres weekly online prelecture quizzes, easy homeworks, four exams, and lots of easy points. Take this class!!!
Professor Lyons is just an overall amazing professor. She is funny and you can tell she knows her stuff. There are weekly online pre-lecture and post-lecture quizzes that are basically grade boosters. Aside from that there are no homework assignments. Take this class if you want to learn about psych but still get an A!!
Professor Lyons was one of the best professors that I had during my first year at JMU. She is really passionate about what she does and it shows in the classroom. Assignments and tests are based off of the textbook so it's easy to study. She makes class enjoyable and interesting and has a great sense of humor! Highly recommend taking this class (:
One of my favorite professors so far! She really cares about her students and wants them to fully understand the material. Clicker questions are done each class for a grade and online quizzes every week. An awesome class and super interesting in my opinion.
FAVORITE professor by far! Truly wants students to learn and succeed! Class is easy and enjoyable!
An awesome professor!! Her class is mostly lectures but she does a really good job of making sure her students understand the material and makes it enjoyable. There are a lot of tests and quizzes so there are a lot of opportunities for points.
Claire is an awesome teacher who really cares about her students. She always goes above and beyond and she makes the class interesting. You have a textbook reading and pre-lecture online quiz once a week, but have 3 tries so you're guaranteed an A on them.
Claire is amazing!!! If you are willing to work hard and do your readings then you will get a good grade in this class, Claire gives plenty of extra homework so if you do bad on tests you can still pass the class (just do the HW). Claire is my favorite teacher her so far! She makes class fun :)
Dr. Lyons is awesome she cares and is always willing to help. Don't miss class though there's clicker questions every time and she gives you plenty of point opportunities to bump your grade up. She makes class interesting and makes sure everyone understands the topics. You definitely have to read the chapters before every exam though.
You'd think with a 200+ class Lyons wouldn't pay attention to who was on their phone or asleep but she often calls people out in the middle of class for it (even in the middle/back sections). She's a stickler but easy to understand. If you don't read you likely won't do well, clicker questions every class, and weekly reading quizzes with 3 attempts
Although PSYC160 is a gened Lyons makes its really interesting! READ THE BOOK!
Grade is based off of clicker questions, weekly prelecture quizzes, and 3 tests (plus final). Attendance isn't mandatory but does clicker questions every class which count towards your grade (easy points so don't skip class). If you don't read the textbook, you won't pass. Put in a lot of work and reading and you will do fine! Such a cute nice lady
Claire was by far one of my favorite professors this semester. She wrote the book for the class & it's super easy to understand, lectures aren't too boring, and there are lots of participation points using clickers. She's very nice & understanding, and at times it may seem like there's a lot of info to learn but the tests are super easy and all mc.
Professor Lyons is a great professor. Her lectures are phenomenal and memorable. Read the textbook or you won't pass. Attendance is not mandatory but grades are based off clicker questions which you have to be present to get points for. So, while not mandatory, definitely go. Three tests and a final, quizzes on class material and textbook chapters.
She's a nice Irish lady who is strict but a good professor overall. She'll call you out for texting or sleeping in her class of 300.
Hidden gem of JMU psychology!! She is so kind and makes the material approachable. As long as you read or somewhat pay attention in class, you can get an A. Tests are very manageable and lectures are entertaining with videos or interactive. 11/10 recommend taking her, she really does care.
Lyons is absolutely amazing. Lectures are clear, all materials accessible outside of class, there are weekly prelecture quizzes that are annoying, but they are helpful for the grade. She does offer extra credit throughout the year and is always there to help. Four tests during the year and you have to read the textbook (she wrote it)!!
Claire Lyons is amazing. I would take this course again just to have her. Classes are all lecture with clicker questions mixed in but I'm rarely bored. You do have to go to class because clicker questions are graded. There's also a lot of quizzes but they aren't difficult if you do the readings.
Prof. Lyons' lectures are interesting and easy to follow. Bases her class off of many grades including daily clicker questions, weekly quizzes, 4 tests total (including midterm and final), with occasional classwork and homework. Must read a good amount. Although she does offer some extra credit and wants her students to succeed. Definitely take her
Prof Lyons was great. I decided to stop reading the textbook about halfway through the course (because I forgot to take an online test that was 15% of my grade and I thought I was done for) and I got an 85 on the final, so that should tell you something. Even though I missed that online test I still passed the course with a B. Take her class bro
Claire is a gem! This class was so enjoyable and I really learned a lot for taking it as a gen ed. There are weekly online quizzes and textbook readings but nothing too major, and the tests are easy as long as you study. Clicker questions are everyday for participation points. Would definitely take this class again!!
Take her! She's super sweet and knows a lot about the course material. If you don't do well on one thing it's okay because there are SO many grades in the class. If you show up and do the clicker questions and don't forget the online quizzes, you'll be fine!
Claire Lyons is a very good professor and seemed very excited to teach the material. She has a no electronic policy so you will need to hand take notes. There are clicker questions every class used as attendance so go to class, but she makes learning very enjoyable so it is easy to go. The online quizzes are easy if you skim over the textbook!
Lyons is a really good prof; she really knows the material & teaches in an effective way. You need to read the textbook for pre-lecture online quizzes & for the tests. In-class clicker questions are every day but are easy points to earn & are VERY similar to test questions, so good practice. Great class & the information is interesting and useful.
You have to read the textbook. There are timed online pre and post lecture quizzes. Class isnt mandatory, but there are clicker questions so if you want those points you should go. Her tests were not difficult, but she does pull a lot from the textbook that was not covered in lecture.
One of my favorite professors! Lyons really makes you know the material. Must read the textbook before class and take online pre-lecture quiz. There are also weekly online post-lecture quizzes. Lyons sticks very closely to the textbook - so class is very structured. About 4 tests during the semester- all question info from textbook. Uses clickers.
Lyons is a great person, but for someone who doesn't understand psychology this class was difficult for me. It wasn't extremely difficult but I did have to really work for the grade I got. There's a lot of stuff you have to do outside of class but overall, this class wasn't horrible.
She definitely knows her psych info. Make sure you read the textbook because there are weekly quizzes on it and it will definitely help you on the tests. Tests can be kind of hard because you really have to know the material, not just definitions. With that being said they aren't the worst. Uses clickers everyday for a grade so go to class
She is the BEST teacher I had freshmen year!! She explains things really well. There are pre-lecture quizzes that I would read the chapter for but her test are on what she explains in class. She is so funny and interesting to listen to.
Great professor. GO TO CLASS CLICKER POINTS MATTER IN THE END! read the book and keep up with the weekly quizzes.
This is a Gen Ed, but you HAVE to work for your grade. I absolutely loved Claire but she has high standards for the class. If you don't like textbook reading, this probably isn't the class for you. The material is very interesting and honestly was enjoyable to read about. Make sure you go to class because she gives clicker quizzes every day!
Claire is one of the best teachers I've ever had! She cares about all of her students so much, and she genuinely cares about her job and making sure we learn. The material is so interesting. She gives clicker questions every day, so you need to go to class. The tests are pretty easy too. The reading quizzes are kind of tedious, but help your grade.
The WORST psyc 160 teacher there is she is so utterly rude to every student. She teaches a big lecture class and expects all the students to take handwritten notes. The tests are very hard for no reason at all. She thinks she is the best teacher at JMU so she is very cocky and overall do NOT take her class if you can help it. Just keeping it real.
Lyons was a really well-rounded professor. She was kind and respectable. Her lectures were well laid out and she always had a set plan every single class. She was super organized even with almost 300 students. What you needed to know on the test was straight forward and the information was usually interesting. Her class is doable!
I love psychology but this actually made me hate it. Her tests are so hard, and I dont like how we cant have our laptops out and all our notes MUST be handwritten. She definitely knows what shes talking about but this class is VERY hard. If you dont know how to study or even take notes DO NOT take her class. Look for other options!!
I love professor Lyons so much! She's super funny/unique, knows her stuff, and makes class fun and engaging. She has amazing lectures and teaches the information really well. Her class is very structured, so you know what you're getting. If i could take her 100 times, I would!! I HIGHLY recommend.
Pre lecture quizzes every week get very annoying. Clicker quizzes every class makes attendance mandatory. Lowest 2 of each get dropped which is nice. Irish accent was cool at the beginning of the semester but gets annoying. Long textbook readings are assigned every week but you can get away with not reading it which is good because its very boring.
Professor Lyons is awful. She will make you buy the textbook that she wrote and published, and then during lecture, will quote word for word what you have already read. Her homework readings and pre-chapter quizzes do not align with material being covered in class. And, she will drown you in assignments that do not impact your grade whatsoever.
Prof Lyons really knows her stuff. I went into this course already knowing the general basics of Psychology, but she took this course into more depth which made it interesting to learn about. The tests are somewhat tricky if you do not take good notes or study, I definitely recommend outlining the chapters! Overall an easy course!!!
This class is supposed to be a gen ed, but it made me consider dropping out of college.
Claire is by far my fav teacher. She wrote the book and she knows her stuff. She's engaging and I love going to class. Clicker questions matter! So make sure to go to class. Lectures are online and there are practice quizzes and flashcards provided. Every test question you have probably seen some variation of before if you go to class. Love her
Claire is super awesome and funny during her lectures. Participation grade is through clicker questions during each class. Some assignments are dropped, so failing one quiz won't affect your grade. There is a lot of reading, but it is interesting and you need to do it in order to pass.
Loved Dr. Lyons! She really loves what she is teaching and her lectures were very easy to follow. Make sure to read the textbook or you will fail the class since she assigns quizzes on them. You don't have to go to class, but you should so that you get clicker points which will boost your grade. Overall great professor!
Dy. Lyons is such a cool teacher. She really is passionate ab Psych and obviously is incredibly knowledgable in the subject. You have weekly pre lecture reading quizzes so you have to read it. You also use a clicker everyday for points so you will have so many grades in. Buy cognella active learning IT HELPS SO MUCH.
There is a prelecture quiz on every chapter so you have to read the textbook. She requires the Cognella flashcards and practice quizzes but I didn't get them and was fine. She is funny but hates phone use in class. Study for the tests. She requires a clicker and part of your grade is clicker use.
She makes the content easy to understand. The weekly quizzes however, are tedious and there is a good amount of reading each week. She does clicker questions based off of the readings and exams will be hard if you don't read. A good bit of work for a Gen Ed but doable if you keep up.
Claire gives tons of grades (clicker points every class, weekly quizzes, and homeworks). Easy class as long as you keep up with the sometimes over 50 page chapter reading for the week. Drops two lowest quiz grades. She requires that you purchase the textbook that she wrote and it's very pricey - buy used! Online materials not really necessary.
She does clicker points and if you arent in class to do them your grade will drop significantly. Reading the chapters is useful for pre-lecture quizzes but you dont use it too much. She requires you to buy the active learning materials but you really dont need them.
I didn't expect to enjoy this class but it was really interesting subject matter. Nice professor but be prepared for online prefecture quizzes and you have to read the chapters to pass.
Such a nice professor! Very organized lectures and adds humor to the class. Quite a bit of work, but very doable. Would definitely recommend her!
Claire is awesome. Even though it was a 300+ person lecture, I made eye contact and engaged with her every class. Weekly quizzes on canvas each week that play a big part in your grade so read the textbook to do well on those quizzes. Use the questions at the end of each section of the textbook to study, they're super helpful and similar to the test
Yes, you do need to put work in for this class. But just READ. She wrote the textbook so she knows what she's talking about. If you care about your education at all and want to get an A, just read and show up to class. She does clicker questions throughout lectures and it helps you understand, she also has hella office hours. Just put in the work!
Claire is such a wonderful professor. She is very realistic and accessible, even with a 300 person lecture. Yes, you do have to do the readings and do the clicker questions to do well, but she makes it very possible to achieve and succeed in her class. Her TA's don't seem to know much though, so if you need help I would go straight to her.
Claire was the best professor I had this past semester. If you read her textbook then you'll do well in the class. Its obvious she cares about her students and wants them to learn. She loves answering questions.
Claire is so awesome!! I enjoyed this class so much. Yes you do need to show up and do your work but if you read the textbook and do the practice quizzes and study guides you will be fine. She wrote the textbook so she knows what she is talking about and it is a great reference for the class. She also tries to make herself available to everyone.
She is a wonderful professor. She keeps everyone engaged with lectures.
great professor and really knows how to teach the content. however, she teaches directly from her own book so showing up to class feels kinda redundant if you read the book. you have to show up though because there are lots of clicker questions. recommend her though, a very doable class
She is a great teacher who really cares about what she teaches. If you go to her office hours she will help you out. There are 12 reading quiz's based out of the book but you have 3 attempts and she drops the 2 lowest . The final is cumulative but she gives you a detailed study guide for it.
She is very approachable and makes the lectures interesting. Attendance is important because she does clicker questions everyday to review material from the previous class. I always felt very prepared for tests and her lectures are based mainly on her textbook but with other info added in. I learned a lot and it's an easy A if you work hard.
Use your textbook and outside resources she provides (clicker questions and flash cards). If you study you will get a great grade. Very interesting and engaging lectures, totally worth showing up for class!
Claire Lyons is by far my favorite professor I've ever had. You definitely have to take notes during class and read the textbook, but she tries her best to make sure that everyone understands what is going on in class. She's willing to answer any (reasonable) questions you have and makes class fun.
Lyons was not a good professor to me. I did not like the way she taught her lectures. Weekly quizzes on canvas each week. Each of them is 12 multiple choice and allowed 3 attempts for all of them. 3 80 multiple choice exams that were a little hard and detailed. Final was cumulative and it was a 100 multiple choice exam. Attendance is mandatory!
Amazing professor. Lectures are not boring and she is very respectful and considerate of the needs of the students. weekly online pre-lecture quizzes based off of the book. Easy to boost grade if you do the readings. Really wants you to succeed and provides you with everything you need to get a good grade.
I'm honestly surprised Claire has such a high rating. I thought she was rude and not approachable. This guy in my class was rushing and had to dress as a leprechaun, and she got very offended/asked for his fraternity to report them since she is Irish lol
Claire is a solid choice. Her teaching style and clickers seemed like a lot at first but they really help you learn. Tons of opportunities for grades, so one quiz wont kill you. Weekly chapter quizzes were pretty easy if you read the text. Recommend the optional learning tools if you can afford them, they allow you practice test questions and such
Lyons expects the most out of her students. She makes us read 40-50 textbook pages weekly and take a quiz on it. Clicker questions each class. Her ego and sense of not understanding that her students take other classes threw me off. Otherwise, she does teach very well (she knows what she's talking about since she wrote the expensive textbook).
Honestly surprised she has such a high rating. I am a psyc major and I took this class an elective and I ended up putting in more work for her class than my major psyc classes. Getting an A is possible, but she really makes you work for it. You have prelecture quizzes each week and have to read around 50-60 pages from the textbook. hard for a gened
Dr. Lyons is so passionate about psychology & a great professor! The info is interesting and applicable so lectures are enjoyable, plus Claire works hard to incorporate videos, etc to keep focus. Lots of clicker questions, weekly quizzes, and about 4 exams (one online). Drops a few assignments & lots of extra credit, but you do have to put in work
Dr. Lyons is such a sweet professor and wants her students to be successful. The class relies heavily on her textbook, which requires a lot of reading and online quizzes, but as long as you do the work and show up to class regularly it's an easy A. She gives plenty of opportunities for grade boosters and extra credit. Lectures were interesting.
Personally she doesn't work for me. It's pretty obvious her textbook is a money grab, especially with clickers, which are a grade, which takes questions directly from the book. She also yells into the mic, which is a more personal thing. She's not bad, just if you come from a certain background you're done for.
My favorite professor that I have ever had. She wants students to succeed. Do the work, read the textbook, annotate, take notes and you will be golden. What she does in class is what is on the tests. Gives a ridiculous amount of extra credit which is really beneficial. She is funny and interesting and keeps the class intrigued.
One of my favorite professors I've had! Cares very much for her students and wants them to learn and do well. 4 total exams, weekly quizzes on readings, and many other opportunities for points. Available outside of class and encourages you to go to office hours. Great person, helpful, and hilarious too! Take her!!
Lectures are really interesting and she always makes them fun. Only 4 tests and weekly quizzes but as long as you go to class, pay attention, and read the textbook it's a pretty easy class.
I wouldn't recommend taking her class as a GenEd. It's unnecessarily hard and she expects a lot from you. Skipping class won't benefit you because you do daily clicker questions in class and they count towards your grade. Her test questions come from the textbook and lectures, and the additional materials that come with the book.
The amount of opportunities to do well in this class is insane. Literally just put some effort and you'll do well. Everyone complaining in the reviews is just lazy... She's funny, understanding, and has clear expectations. The only way to do poorly in this class is to do nothing (not study, not submit assignments, not show up to class)
I highly recommend taking this class. Lyons is very passionate about psych and it shows, so much so that she even wrote the textbook that this class is based off of. There is a lot of opportunities to do well, as there are weekly online quizzes based on the chapters which are fairly easy as long as you take notes on the chapter. great teacher overa
She is great professor that wants everyone to do well. It is very lecture heavy but if you go to class you should pass because you will receive points daily. Overall a great class.
Makes the lecture interesting. Tries to interact with the whole room. Material is challenging, but if you keep up with it you will get through it. Clickers every class and prelecture quizzes. For exams study your lecture notes as well as the corresponding chapters in the textbook. Great lady.
Dr. Lyons is easily one of the best professors I've had. She is kind and energetic and her lectures are always interesting. She gives plenty of opportunities to get help before tests and the tests are easy as long as you pay attention. Attendance is mandatory but I truly enjoyed going to class. I strongly recommend you take this class!
Claire is very sweet and entertaining, and makes class interesting. She wrote her own textbook, and it is very expensive (and you do need to read to pass!), but I would recommend not buying the online materials to save money. They are not used for credit, only for extra review if you want it, as well as extra credit points.
This has been my favorite class so far as a second year. Textbook reading is required because she wrote it and the pre-lecture quizzes (3 attempts; drops two lowest) ask textbook-specific questions; due before the next class. Strict no-phone policy, but great, interesting lectures! Two lowest HW and clicker ?s dropped. 3 cumulative exams w/ final.
Very well structured class. She has so much knowledge and helps the students in any possible way. Talk to her outside of class about anything you'd like and she will understand and help you. Best professor I have ever had.
Professor Lyons is one of the best professors I've had at JMU. She makes the class really engaging and interesting, definitely take her if you have the chance. Plenty of chances for extra credit and she drops two lowest clickers and quizzes. I wish I could take her again.
Dr. Lyons is a great professor, but she walks around the big lecture room, which sometimes gets me anxious. Her class is not hard, but you DO need to study outside of class in order to pass. Her tests are cumulative, so you need to study EVERYTHING regularly. She will help you individually in office hours, and she wants you to succeed.
Dr. Lyons is one of the best professors Ive had. Clicker questions everyday for easy points. She wrote the textbook so the exams are very straightforward and come right from the book. Reviews before every exam and LOTS of extra credit opportunities! Very good at answering questions and proving good examples of topics. Take her class!!!!!
Prof. Lyons seems likable enough in class but I had some problems with her even though I crushed her class grade-wise. She makes you buy her textbook which is kinda scummy in my eyes, she forces you to identify with her left-wing gender identity political views for her course, and attendance is mandatory due to the clickers. Easy A but annoying.
I LOVE THIS WOMAN. Easily the best professor at JMU and I'm not even a Psych major. Her lectures are so interesting and there are lots of videos to ensure that you understand the material. Read the chapters (yes, its more than 5 pages) and come to class and you have an easy A. Lots of extra credit opportunities and her tests are fairly easy.
Very good professor! She knows what she is doing and is very good at teaching the material. She wants all of her students to succeed and will work with you if you are struggling. Do not take her if you like to skip class, but if you show up and read the textbook and complete all of her assignments, you should have no trouble passing.
Claire Lyons is fantastic. She is a super knowledgeable professor who genuinely cares about the subject matter. She's also a great teacher, I retained information from her lectures very easily. She incorporates cute videos and fun reset minutes to keep class engaging. You should 100% take her for Pysc
I loved Claire's class. She is an amazing teacher! You have prelecture quizzes due every week which are really hard, but her tests are super easy. Get cognella and do the practice quizzes, those helped me a lot. Make sure you do your participant pool points, that can either make or break your grade. Lots of opportunity for extra credit!
I loved Lyons class. She made lectures fun and enjoyable. Clicker questions every class but they help so much for tests and to understand the material. Reading quizzes once a week that are directly from the chapters, but they are long . Tests are easy if you study. She is very kind and wants everyone to succeed
Clarie Lyons is such an amazing professor! She cares about her students and how she presents the material for the class. Tests and quizzes were easy as long as you went to her lectures and read the textbook. She also gives her students a 'reset minute' to relax in the middle of class. If I could take another class with Claire, I would!
Solid choice for 160, but a lot more reading than anticipated (I guess that's to be expected when she wrote the textbook) She really cares about her students and has "reset minutes" during class. Read the chapter before the weekly online quizzes, practice online activities (which are counted as extra credit), go to class, and you'll be just fine.
The only reason why I got a C in this class is because her TESTS ARE CUMULATIVE!!! That made it very hard to study because, in addition to studying the material for the current chapter, you had to review EVERYTHING again. But, if you're on top of things and review stuff after every class, you will be fine. She is interactive, and a great professor.
Dr. Lyons was my favorite professor I have ever had. She made the class very interesting and explained the material so that it was easy to understand. I have never liked school or going to class, but I got excited before every PSYC160 class, mainly because of Claire. Highly recommend taking her class, you won't regret it.
Claire is an incredible professor. She wrote the textbook, so its really easy to follow along with her lectures. Her tests are easy to pass if you study! Study the clicker questions and the study guide. All of the answers to quiz questions and study guide questions can be found in the textbook. I learned so much from this class!
This class involves a lot of reading, but the material is interesting and easy to understand! All the exams are cummulative (I believe there's 3 exams plus a final exam). There's also online weekly quizzes (timed) based on each reading/chapter, and clicker questions that count for a grade at the start of each class. She's a really sweet professor!
Professor Lyons is my favorite professor at JMU. Her lectures are very informative and not tricky. There is a LOT of reading but it is completely manageable.. around 30-50 pages a week. There are "pre lecture" quizzes before each week based off the chapter and you can take them 3 times. Tests are straight forward. TAKE HER!!!
attendance is not mandatory, your grade will suffer a lot if you skip. She does daily participation points. Reading is required for pre lecture quizzes but you can find answers online. Everything in her lectures is what you already read. Pretty much an easy A,she is super sweet and easy to reach outside of class. EXAMS ARE NOT CLEAR USE VOCAB WORDS
Really enjoyed Lyons class, the material is interesting and she made it easy to follow. Even though she assigns lots of chapter readings for prefecture quizzes I haven't opened to textbook once and have an A with very average effort. Easy to succeed if you show up and take good notes.
She is a really good and caring professor. Her class is a little difficult, but if you put the work in, it shouldn't be hard to get an A. Participation is graded by classwork everyday and three are dropped at the end of the semester. There are quizzes almost every week online that aren't too difficult.
best psych class ever! lectures aren't complicated, she gives extra credit opportunities, and overall as long as you keep up with the material the class is not hard. plus, she is sooo sweet and willing to help anytime. take this class!!!
Dr. Lyons is a sweet lady, but she has no idea how to control a 300 person class! Sometimes she'd stop an entire lecture to yell at one person. Beware of anything that's not multiple choice. She wants answers exactly matching what's in her book, & sometimes doesn't even remember what's in her own book! Just do her extra credit, and you'll be fine.
Her class is very chaotic, but funny to watch because her rules are very strict. Clicker points EVERY CLASS, Ch quizzes every week, Group work, But these are good grade boosts. Failed both tests, but she offers several extra credit, so I ended with an A! Definitely take her! Shes very understanding too
Chapter quizzes every week but textbook able to understand. Amazing lectures but strict rules like no phones. Clicker questions every class so show up. Makes you put work in to get an A. Tests and final exam were open note! Gives good feedback.
Lyons is a wonderful professor! She's caring and wants each of her students to succeed. Her class is easy, with online quizzes, daily participation, and lots of extra credit! She listens to complaints/comments and addresses them immediately. She's so kind and makes 300 person lectures feel intimate. I can't say enough good things about her!
Really knowledgeable lady, but expects too much for this being a gened. There are pre-lecture quizzes twice a week and the questions change every time you try to retake it. Clicker questions are not counted for participation, but for how many you actually get correct. You have to read at lest 60+ pages a week from her textbook. Do not recommend
She is so cheerful and plays music before class. Exams aren't bad and are open book and note! She offers a lot of extra credit, on my 2nd exam she offered so much extra cred I ended up getting 160% on the exam. Pre lecture quizzes are somewhat hard but you can take them 3 times and your best one counts. Overall good teacher & easy/interestin class!
an absolute QUEEN of a professor. Take her class! I wish I could again. Lots of reading but the textbook is written by her so it matches exactly with the lectures in a way that makes learning really smooth. Super good at giving examples and breaking material down. TAKE LYONS !!
She is AWESOME! Highly recommend, she is super interactive and does lots of activities. She makes sure all her students know what they are learning even with a class that has over 200 kids. She gives two quizzes a week, the tests are kind of hard but if you study you will be fine. She also asks the students what she can do better, which is sweet!!
This class is not too bad but you have to read the textbook closely to succeed. She also weights all her assignments kinda weird. Like in class assignments low-key make or break your grade, but she usually does drop the lowest grade. She so nice and caring and wants everyone to succeed, def a solid choice
I highly recommend Lyons for psych 160. Its a lot of reading but its honestly not that bad. Her quizzes and tests are open note and are fairly easy. Shes so nice and her lectures arent that boring. Also she really cares about her students. I definitely recommend her
this lady.. PERIOD. i love her. she is such a queen. this class is so gd easy cuz she makes it mad easy. i was sailing thru this class with like a 107 the whole semester. take her. shes quirky and has a cute accent <3
Great class and a great professor. She cares a lot about her students. The quizzes can be hard, but overall she cares and wants to help you. The textbook required and much needed.
Took this for gened credit and was blown away by the class. She makes you use her own textbook (and you HAVE to), but it's well worth it. I wrote a 40 page study guide for the final, and to keep afterward, because there was so much useful information I thought would help me both as a teacher and as a person.
Professor Lyons is a good choice for this class. While it is a decent amount of textbook reading for a gen ed she is a solid choice. She wrote the textbook so she is very knowledgable of the material. While the exams are a little difficult she's a good choice for the class.
Was excited to take her after the good reviews, but her online class sucks. All tests are cumulative, tough quizzes, and she threatened to honor code all of us bc we used google to find definitions for an activity. Synchronous lectures (waste of time for such a large gen ed class).
You have to read the whole textbook to understand the class (because she wrote it lol). But if you read you will be fine. Quizzes every week and 3 exams, I did not get less than a B on a single one. She is very good at explaining and helping you if you need it.
I absolutely LOVED Professor Lyons. She really cares about the class and her students and she makes the class a safe space for all (even if we are online). She answers emails quickly, and she's always there for you. You have to do a bit of reading, but she covers most of test material in lectures. Don't take PSYCH 160 if you don't have Dr. Lyons.
Professor Lyons is one of the nicest people I have ever met. There is a lot of textbook reading involved with a pre-lecture quiz on the chapter and a quiz on the in-class lectures each week but they are very short and easy. If you keep up with the readings and take notes you will be fine. There's also extra credit and she drops your lowest grade.
honestly i enjoyed this class. its very textbook heavy prolly bc she wrote the thing herself. you do have to read and try in this class, but ive maintained an A while doing the bare minimum. i went to maybe half the lectures and got nothing less than a 92 on the tests. claire is a nice woman who does want the best for her students
This class is very easy. You dont really have to show up to the lectures to do well. Everything you read in the textbook is what she talks about in class. Tests are very easy. I never studied for them and got As. Just make sure to take notes from the textbook so you can look at them during the tests.
Professor Lyons is one of the best professors I have ever had. She wrote the textbook so everything she says goes hand in hand with the lectures. Attendance isn't mandatory but I highly recommend going to her lectures because she does lots of review. As long as you read the book and take reading notes you will pass.
Claire Lyons is a great choice for PSYC160! She is such a sweet lady who wants the best for her students and is very accessible outside of class! Her class is very reading heavy and there are 2 quizzes a week based on the readings. 3 tests and a final that were pretty straight-forward! Take Dr. Lyons if you can!
Professor Lyons is so sweet and really cares about her students. She was very understanding and flexible with COVID and made the best out of the online class. She gives great examples and explains concepts well. I would recommend attending lectures but she posts the recordings of the zooms. She was also very understanding w/ accommodations.
Dr. Lyons is AMAZING. She really cares about the content and her students. I would expect to read that textbook cover to cover, but her exams are pretty straight forward. Weekly reading and lecture quizzes, not too bad though she's a reasonable teacher and takes into account student feedback
Professor Lyons truly cares about her students and the information she is teaching. While the class was entirely online, she still made an effort to reach out to students for participation. She handled technical difficulties and class disruptions professionally and always made sure students knew she was available.
Claire is a great professor! She gives you so many opportunities to do well in her class and is super accessible. However, you need to read the textbook. It helps you TREMENDOUSLY! Plus she gives lots of extra credit opportunities. I ended up with over 100% in her class
Dr. Lyons was an amazing professor. I would definitely take her again if I could. She always asked for student feedback and definitely took it into consideration. There is a good amount of textbook reading per week for class, but it is definitely manageable. Four cumulative tests, but all straightforward and open note/book. Lots of extra credit.
Professor Lyons is such a sweet lady and she really cares about her students and always wants their feedback. I loved this class and as long as you study you will be fine. She also gives lots of extra credit.
Lyons was great. She has a few tests and a quiz each week but if you read the textbook and go to class then you'll pass easily. She was quick to respond to emails and when was willing to work with me. She's down to business but you can tell she loves what she's teaching. Just pay attention and it's an easy A.
Read the textbook and complete the extra credit assignments and you will do fantastic in the class. I ended with over a 100% in the class. I did put a lot of time in for the class but it wasnt hard. Lyons respects her students opinions and wants input. She is always willing to change things to better her students. Shes lovely
I really enjoyed this class! Dr. Lyons is super sweet and caring. She wrote her own textbook and a chapter is assigned pretty much every week, with about 40 pages each. Read the whole chapter, take solid notes and you're golden; the questions on quizzes and tests are just like the books. Plus, a ton of extra credit is offered!
Dr. Lyons is definitely a solid choice. It is a good amount of textbook reading, which is needed if you want to pass the weekly quizzes and exams. Most of the information I had already learned or it felt like common sense, so there were times I did not study and did well. Lectures seemed unnecessary, she goes over info you read in the textbook.
Claire is the sweetest woman ever! She really cares about her students and wanted us all to do well. Very lecture heavy, dont miss a class or you wont do well on the tests. Her grading scale is tough, an A is a 95%. If you read the textbook and attend class regularly, easy A
I took this class as a junior because of the positive reviews, thinking it would be an easy asynchronous class. From what I assumed, our zoom meeting would just be a lecture, but it is the opposite. DO NOT TAKE Dr. Lyons if you don't want a large lecture that requires participation in breakout rooms with your TA every class meeting.
Professor Lyons was a great professor for this Psych160 course. She relies heavily on her textbook (that she wrote). Be sure to utilize the resources/extra credit opportunities that she has available. The reading questions/quizzes were helpful in reviewing material and made great study guides for the exams! Just put in effort!
Take Professor Lyons for Psyc 160! She is an amazing professor and is definitely passionate about teaching the material. There is a lot of work in this class but it is truly needed to succeed and to really understand the material. She wrote the textbook for this class, so it really is your best friend when studying.
Claire Lyons demands a lot, and there are definitely better professors to choose from. Her TAs grade the assignments and lots of times I had to email her because of mistakes. Its a lot of information to learn in 1 semester and you must participate if you want a good grade.
The sweetest lady ever. She plays music before class and always is dancing. All tests are open note but I definitely recommend reading the textbook if you want a good grade. It's really easy to understand and she's always willing to help.
READ! Although her lectures have info that relate to the tests most of the info you need to know is in the textbook. Prof Lyons is such a great person though, cracked jokes sometimes and danced in class, she's great. The in class activities were pretty too as well as the homework assignments outside of class. Tests are open book too but still read!
Harder than it needed to be but still not that hard of a class
Claire is an amazing professor, she wrote her own textbook so she really knows what she's talking about. The things we learn in that class are extremely interesting. You do have to show up to class though because she does clicker questions every class. The textbook is mandatory and really helps lot with studying for tests and prelecture quizzes
Professor Lyons was a great professor. She cares a lot about her students and puts in a lot of effort to make sure students are familiar with material. IF YOU READ THE TEXTBOOK YOU WILL DO FINE. She wrote the textbook and the tests are directly from material covered in class and in the book, so if you take the notes it's easy
Claire is awesome. She really tries to make class fun, but it is very lecture heavy. Participation matters because you have to buy a clicker and answer several questions for points. All tests (and final exam) are open note and online! As long as you have the textbook and do the work, you will pass!
Lyons is one of the best professors hands down. However, you have to work for your grade. But, the material you learn is very interesting and she makes lectures fun. Lots of extra credit opportunities too. A little more difficult for a gened, but 100% worth it. She and her TAs will help you in any way they can.
If you are taking PSYC 160, take Claire Lyons! She is the sweetest person, and her lectures are really interesting. You have lots of extra credit opportunities, and all exams are open note and online. She wrote the textbook we use, so you will have to do some reading and put in some work, but I loved this class! 10/10 would recommend.
Claire Lyons is a really nice professor that understands what seems like everything about psychology. She provides so many extra credit opportunities and really tries to help students remember topics by simplifying complex concepts and using examples. Trust me when I say just read and take notes on the textbook and you'll be set.
She is an amazing professor. She gives good feedback and you can almost always reach her outside of class. She makes lecture interesting and fun. You will have to read the textbook and the exams are straight from it.
She was rude, annoying, and boring. Worst of all she made us pay for software just to get extra credit, It was pay to win almost. Worst professor I've had. Class was easy though!
This class has a lot of textbook reading and other weekly assignments. There are a lot of extra credit opportunities. The tests and quizzes are straight from lectures and the textbook. She is really caring and wants her students to do well. There are a lot of office hours if you need help.
Claire is amazing. Her lectures are very interesting and she does interactive questions throughout to keep people engaged. Her tests are all open book/note. She expects you to read the chapter from the textbook for each chapter to do a prelecture quiz but I never did and still passes. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities too. I love Claire!
She's an absolute queen. Just read the textbook/take notes and do the extra credit assignments and you will be fine. Very sweet woman who will always help you if you're struggling, only minor annoyance is that the extra credit assignments don't count as extra credit until the end of the semester.
Dr. Lyons is a fantastic professor. Took PSYCH160 as a gened at the last minute, and am so glad I got her class. She wrote the textbook, but it's well-written and easily the least painful of any textbooks I've had to get for a class. Tests are open note and on canvas, including the final! Lovely woman, and would love to take a class with her again.
She is a really good professor. Some test are difficult, she talks really fast and normally the important stuff comes out of her mouth rather than what is on the powerpoint, so if you don't comprehend what she says then that's a bad grade. She is really nice and makes class interesting.
Professor Lyons was an amazing professor. She really cared about your mental health and was open to helping you. She was eager to answer any questions you had and really helped make sure you understood the content. She made the class very interactive with clicker questions everyday that sometimes showed up on the exams. Best professor!!!
Dr. Lyons is a great professor. She is super nice and cares about her students. I lover her class, it was a relatively easy gen ed, 10/10 recommend. Not a ton of homework, but she also def isn't light on the homework. Still, it's totally manageable
If you have to take PSYC 160, take her!!! Classes are interesting and it's easy to stay engaged. Lots of readings but if you actually read and take good notes from the readings it's not that hard to get an A. The readings help A LOT on the tests!
Professor Lyons is great! All of her lectures are interesting and clear. She gives plenty of options for extra credit and gives participation scores for each lecture so make sure you go.
If you read the textbook, this class is an easy A. The lectures are interesting and Claire makes an effort to make them fun. She gives a lot of extra credit throughout the year, imo it'd be very difficult to not do well in her class. All exams are online, the textbook is definitely needed, the class activities are easy, and she answers emails fast.
I would 100% take her again. She truly cares for her students & wants them to do well. She gives extra credit opportunities & is always willing to help. Her textbook is truly a bible in her class. Not a hard class, just put actual effort in & its an easy A. She makes class fun & worth it.
Amazing professor! I would take her time and time again if possible. She is very clear with how she grades and even more clear with her lectures. If I had put more effort in I could have ended with an A. There are so many extra credit opportunities with every chapter. If you have the chance, take her!!!
The sweetest woman & is very clear in her lectures. Lots of work & lots of opportunities for extra credit.
Dr. Lyons was a really enjoyable professor. The class I had was huge, so it felt like it was harder to engage, but she was good about walking around to the back of the class and asking questions from everyone. The format of the reading quizzes seems difficult at first, and like a lot of reading, but it's a pretty easy A if you make the effort.
She was such a good professor. And if you study the material given, you'll get an A. The course itself is already interesting, but she makes it so much better. Take her if you can.
Dr. Lyons is an amazing professor. She lectures a lot but is interesting (a repeat of the textbook with added videos and examples). Tests are open notes and she wrote the textbook so the questions are like the book. Mandatory attendance, drops lowest quiz/homework
Professor Lyons was one of my favorite professors. She's kind and cares about students who put in the effort to pass. There is a ton of reading and extra credit but I was able to pass with a B+ while doing maybe half of it. Show effort and she'll do everything in her power to make sure you get a good grade.
Graded by a lot of assignments. 4 tests first two in-person last 2 online. Textbook is expensive, you should do the Cognella extra credit assignments as they are an easy boost to your grade. Would take again
Very nice,easy to learn
Great lectures that really help understand important content. Read one chapter of the textbook a week outside of class, take prelecture quizzes, homework assignments but nothing unmanagable. There are many different assignments so easy to raise your grade. As long as you put in the effort overall not too hard of a class and super interesting.
Although Prof. Lyons can come off as a little tough, she is a fantastic professor who is passionate about her subject and cares so deeply for her students. I was nervous about this course but it ended up being one I looked forward to each day. She always does her best to help and get you to where you need to be.
Prof. Lyons is genuinely such an amazing lecturer. She cares about each of her students and their success. That being said, if you don't put the effort in, this course will be more challenging than it needs to be. Make sure to buy the textbook, go to class, and ask questions during/after class if you need help.
AMAZING professor. She knows what she is talking about (hence her having her own textbook) and is such a sweet and funny person. I never dreaded going to her lectures because they were actually so interesting. She cares about your well-being and is extremely understanding if something doesn't go right. 10/10
Prof Lyons was amazing! Although the lecture is 300+ people, she makes it interactive and fun to sit through. She teaches the material well. There are pre-lecture quizzes due every week, LOTS of videos to watch, and a. few easy homework assignments.
I would take her class again but only if it wasn't a huge lecture like I took this year with her. She is very sweet but tough and I think its because it was a huge class. She's understanding but a tough grader and I feel she never reviewed the assignments/tests thoroughly. Really nice though and has funny dance breaks.
Overall this wasn't a bad class. Claire is really sweet and funny and tries to be there for her students. The course seemed to have an excessive amount of reading at times, and I wasn't a fan of her lecture/notes style. Lots of information is covered that needs to be remembered for all exams. Just make sure to take good notes and you'll be fine.
Dr. Lyons is very knowledgable about the class topic, she wrote the textbook you need for the class. Her lectures can sometimes drag on, but she gives breaks in class and clearly cares about her student's mental health more than their grades. Go to class for the participation points, stay for the dance breaks.
Honestly Claire is a fine professor, I just personally didn't like how the class was structured. The class isn't overly difficult there is just a lot of work and readings that are boring. If you took AP Psychology in high school, it's basically just a repeat of that class. I will say she does care for her students and wants to see them succeed.
She's so nice and really funny so her lectures were always entertaining. Lots of reading from the textbook with very specific quizzes on it so you actually have to read it. There are also so many additional homework assignments it felt unnecessary at times. Exams are pretty straightforward if you learn the material. Take her!!
She was okay, but tests were way harder than they should have been. Overall, way too hard for a gen ed. She would get so mad when people werent paying attention in a class with at least 200 people in it. Its just lectures and it gets so boring
She really cares about her students and their well beings. She drops the lowest class activity. You can get easy 100's on assignment and there's many teacher assistants who are willing to help during and outside of class. If you need psyc160 take her!!!
A lot of work, but every psych class will be. Textbook readings and good amount of extra credit. Claire Lyons is so nice tho.
Dr.Lyons is a great professor! I loved her class and her lectures were always interesting. The textbook is required; she'll often have pre-lecture quizzes that will go with the readings and review activities linked to them but they're not hard. I strongly recommend taking her class.
It's definitely a lecture-heavy class, which can get boring, but otherwise not too hard and if you do the assignments you will be fine. She drops a lot of your lower grades and offers extra credit (with course materials you, unfortunately, have to purchase). She is super understanding and wants to see you succeed!
Professor Lyons is such a great professor. She is extremely engaging and passionate. Her lectures were very easy to understand, and the material is interesting. She was easy to communicate with and this was one of my favorite classes. She wrote her own textbook so the information is very clear.
LOVE Professor Lyons. She's super helpful, and it's clear she's passionate. It's crucial you go to class, but her lectures are fun and well paced. There are also a lot of grades which is really helpful.
I LOVED professor Lyons! She is so caring and very knowledgeable. Her gradebook is based on 106% instead of 100%, so there are a lot of extra credit opportunities, and her class is NOT test heavy. She wrote her own textbook, so all her tests are modeled directly from the textbook. Lyons truly cares about her subject and her students, I recommend!
She is a super caring and sweet professor. She wants to help students succeed, and she has several TAs ready to help as well. The lectures are long, but she builds in breaks and tries to get the class interacting. The readings are also long, but the readings and quizzes prepare you well for the lectures and tests. She is a great option for PSYC160!
Professor Lyons is an AMAZING professor. Even though her lectures are normally full of people, she will still make an effort to answer your direct questions and make sure everyone genuinely understands. She is very well spoken, and her lectures aren't boring. The exams are all online and done at home, same with quizzes. Go to class! Take her!!!
Claire is AMAZING. She only teaches 160 or I would take her for everything. Incredibly knowledgeable in her field and so sweet and silly. Fair warning there is a ton of reading but overall the content is easy. Tests are online with lockdown browser. Ton of extra credit. Definitely get the textbook!! She wrote it and bases weekly quizzes on it.
Mrs. Lyons is a knowledgeable professor in her field. Her lectures can be a bit boring SOMETIMES but she keeps the class engaged with clicker questions and asking opinions on topics. Her test were difficult, but if you read the textbook as prompted and studied her lectures you could easily pass with an A. Overall 8/10 for this gen ed course!
Scary woman but sweet. go to class and don't miss poll everywhere or in class assignments. tests are difficult, just read the textbook and you'll be fine. just don't miss too many assignments!
For a lecture she is very engaging. She doesn't take attendance but there is poll ev in class which counts for a grade. Quizes aren't too tough and there are 3 exams and a final exam.
There sometimes are random in class graded activities, so attendance is important. She is a great teacher, just a huge lecture so it can be hard to pay attention but she makes sure no one is on phones etc. You can tell she is very knowledgable about psychology, she even wrote the textbook she requires you to get.
Sometimes hard to focus because it's a big lecture. She is very knowledgable and passionate about psychology, tests are online and taken outside of class but difficult. I'd definitely recommend attending class, she takes attendance through poll participation. Also a lot of Cognella quizzes.
Gives tons of work and the tests are very difficult.
you definitely need to pay attention in this class. she also doesn't like you to be off task/on your phone. she wrote the textbook for the class and creates all the exams herself.
As a professor, she is very kind and available, but her class structure is horrible. The class is too much work. For me this is a gen-ed and the amount of work given was more than all my other major related classes. If you hate flipped classrooms, this has to be the worst and most disorganized example of it.
Even though she is a very kind and available professor, the class is just too much work for a gen-ed. My major-related classes don't even come close to the amount of time I spend getting everything for this class done. The work is not difficult, it's just a lot. If you hate flipped classrooms, this is the worst example.
Dr. Lyons is a great professor! She cares about the success of her students and encourages feedback so she can improve. There is a lot of reading and outside assignments, but if you manage your time well they're no problem. She gives great lectures and goes in depth about what we read. I would definitely recommend taking her if you can!
This was such an easy class, and super interesting especially for health science majors. There is a bit of reading outside of class but it's all pretty easy and straightforward.
Dr. Lyons is a great professor. She writes her own textbook, so be prepared to read it. Her lectures are all based on the textbook, but she makes sure to go over topics that are confusing. There are weekly chapter quizzes, but if you skim the textbook, you should be fine. She offers extra credit too. I learned a lot from her, take her if you can!
This class was not a lot of work, just reading textbook quizzez and exams. She is nice and this class is an easy a as long as you read the textbook.
Absolutely loved Dr. Lyons. She gave plenty of opportunities for extra credit as well. If you do the work you should get at least a B, the exams aren't even that bad.
Professor Lyons was a great professor. We had prelecture quizzes, practice exams, cognella, the midterm and a final. I loved her course because everything we did led to success in our tests. Tests are online with lockdown browser and have similar questions to all the stuff she gives us beforehand. Shes kind, and understanding, would recommend!
professor lyons knows her stuff and her lectures are very helpful. if you do your homework and get decent grades on the test, you will for sure end with at least a b in the class. she also responds to emails fast.
Very interactive and engaging class. There's lots of readings, but that's because there's a lot of material on the tests. There's so much extra credit you can earn and you don't see this calculated until close to the end, so my grade was much higher than I expected. The tests/final are online and you can take them anywhere during a large time span.
Professor Lyons is really caring and makes her lectures interactive even though its a huge class! She covers a lot of content but all the content is very easy to understand! She offers a ton of extra credit work which was super helpful!
Professor Lyons was a great professor that genuinely wants all of her students to pass. The downside of this class is that there are many assignments and it can be difficult to keep up. There are participation questions every class so it is important to attend. I really enjoyed this class as a psych major but it may be a lot of work for a gen ed.
I highly recommend this class! The key to doing well is to keep with the textbook chapters as the class goes on, taking notes on it, doing the homework, quizzes, etc. Everything is based on the textbook, and as long as you read and record notes you'll succeed. Dr. Lyons really cares about her students and is very organized.
This class was difficult to pay attention in because its so big. She also has an Irish accent so its a little hard to understand. If you take notes, pay attention in class, and study you should be fine. All exams are online with lockdown browser.
Just show up to class and do the work and you will get an A. All quizzes and test are online.
Dr Lyons is a great teacher, and as long as you sit close to the front, being in a huge lecture isn't hard. She literally wrote the textbook we use for this class, so the questions are often taken directly from there, so studying it is VERY important, but if you do, you will certainly do well. She also offers extra credit, so I ended with a 106.
Prof. Lyons was very good! Good lectures, kind, lots of reading but topics are discussed in class, I highly recommend.
Great professor, hard class. Be sure to pay attention in class, keep up with due dates, and study!
I had a great experience with her. You definitely have to go to all the lectures and read the textbook, but her class is so interesting and I had a great time. You also want to respect her during lectures, because she will call you out if you're not paying attention. Other than that, she is a wonderful, knowledgeable person
Prof. Lyons is nice but the class is way too difficult for a Gen Ed. The exams are unnecessarily hard and are the most heavy on your grade. Half of the time I feel like I am answering trick questions when I take the quizzes or exams (because I am).
Claire is the BEST professor to take this class with. All the tests and quizzes are online at home, plus if you buy the textbook (which she wrote) there are lots of extra credit opportunities. She uses PollEverywhere, so go to class!!! You will not regret taking this with her.
Professor Lyon is a super nice lady, and her class is very interesting. Most of the time you will get weekly homework (that is very easy and helpful) and then have exams (which can be difficult) and a final. Everything is online and you take tests at home with lockdown browers. Highly recommend!
Claire is so sweet. Her class grading criteria are super clear, do your work and go to class and easy A. When you ask her questions, she responds and makes sure you understand. Quizzes and Exams are online.
Claire is a fantastic professor. She goes over the syllabus which has crystal clear policies and outlines that you can always refer to. The class is extremely well-structured and your grade is mostly made of 4 online exams that you take outside of class. Make sure to get the textbook and read because there are pre-lecture chapter reading quizzes.
Professor Lyons class is extremely easy. She sets it up so you do well. Although she can be snappy and the lectures are extremely boring I don't see how you could do bad in this class.
can be boring but overall super easy class
Lyons provides many assignments to get credit for (possibility of getting 106%) meaning many opportunities to keep grade up. Tests are online. Makes you buy her book. As long as you attend class to participate in poll everywhere for participation and keep up with assignments and prefecture quizzes you will do good.
Professor Lyons sets you up to very well in her class if you put in the work. There pre-lecture quizzes for each chapter, multiple assignments for each chapter which are optional but will very much boost your grade. As long as you stay on top of them chapter by chapter it is not hard to manage. All exams are online and at home.
This class has a lot of work so depends on the person. I thought it was nice because it was a lot of opportunities to maintain a high grade. Her exams are all online at home on lockdown browser but the questions are pretty difficult.
loved professor lyons so much! her class was very interesting and all her tests/quizzes were online. the class has a lot of homework but the content is very easy and there are multiple opportunities to get ur grade up. i ended with a 93 for reference!
I would recommend this class if needed for a gen ed. There are a lot of little assignments, however they do prepare you for exams and are fairly simple. Exams are taken at home. She uses poll everywhere for attendance every day and those points add up. There are also a few group activities that count for a decent amount of your grade.
Dr. Lyons is an amazing professor; I think she does an excellent job being engaging in such a large class. Her class requires you to read every chapter of the textbook and take notes but as long as you do it is easy. There are lots of assignments but you don't have to complete them all. (I think you should try).
Nice, but a little strict. Her tests are online at home. Reading quizzes due weekly, strict on no phones.
Lyons is a passionate professor who enjoys her work. My gripe with my experience in this course is that the required textbook, written by the professor herself, is $80 for online only, semester long access. This is on the expensive side for any textbook and when you realize there are 300+ people in each section, this price point feels outrageous.
Dr. Lyons was fine. I enjoyed some of her lectures, but some were very boring. She always made us stand and stretch halfway through class which could be kinda annoying. The cognella assignments were easy & pointless, but do them for the credit. Don't expect to be thrilled by her class, but it isn't bad for a GenEd.
lectures are boring sometimes, but the class is really easy. if you do all the cognella assignments and get 15/15 on the weekly quizzes (five attempts + open note) you'll be ok. exams are on lockdown browser and she doesn't allow computers in class. she's very sweet though and is very passionate about psychology.
Prof. Lyon's absurd weighting of participation grades in the grade book is the only reason I come to class. Very boring and unengaging content compared to other Gen Ed's. Further makes it hard to enjoy any of the content since there are so many specific rules, it feels like a high school class. Still a 3 as it's easy to get a good grade.
Professor Lyons is a really kind, genuine woman and she makes all of her ppts easily accessible. This is a class where you will have to work with other people, both in an assigned group and just randomly, so if you do take this course, be sure to try to get connected with others in the class. Anyway, show up to class and you will probably do fine.
she's not a bad professor. she takes everything from her textbook and puts it into her lectures which aren't very good (boring, slow); you'd pass if you just read the textbook instead of attending class. she sets up the class for a grade of 106% so it's easy to do well and her material is generally easy as well. wouldn't take again but not bad.
Claire Lyons was one of the best professors I had at JMU. Her teaching method was clear and concise, and although there was a lot of note-taking involved, I found her tests to be easy. She also allows you to take the tests in a place where you feel comfortable and think clearly. I would definitely recommend taking this class.
Her lectures were easy to follow and the exams were too hard. For every unit there's videos to watch with a question at the end that really helps boost your grade.
She lectures the whole class and usually attendance is mandatory because she does Pool Everywhere. All tests are online and not in class though. Take notes and you should be fine.
She lectures the whole class and I would say attendance is mandatory because she uses Poll Everywhere. All the tests are online and not in class though. Write down notes and you should be fine.
She is very knowledgeable. Cares a lot about the material and class, but maybe too much. Yells at students and will stop a 300 person lecture if she sees someone on their phone. Attendance is taken through poll everywhere. A lot of assignments to boost your grade. If you read and go to class you'll be fine.
This class was very lecture heavy, but she uses poll everywhere for particpation questions in-class and for attendance. She is a bit strict, and it not afraid to call out someone who is not paying attention. All the Unit Test were take home. I would recommend reading the texbook and the cognella assignments, because it was a big boost in my grade.
The course itself was very easy, every assignment, quiz, and test is online which is nice. However the lectures are extremely boring, and will often yell at the students mid lecture. My problem lies as when I was out sick and sent her proof of illness she would not email me back, and gave me a 0 on group work assignment.
Moves at a snail's pace in lectures with mandatory attendance. She'll stop a 300+ person class to chew out someone for being on their phone, and can be a little patronizing in general. Saving grace is that the content is super simple and tests are online. If you have a pulse, you can pass this class.
She's very interested in psych and helps to make it interesting to you as well. You can pass by skimming over the readings. USE THE COGNELLA flashcards and genuinely try for the practice quizzes and exams (some questions are pulled from them for exams). Few extra credit opportunities, exams all mcq, be prepped for group activities -- def take her!!
Not overly enjoyable but a super easy class. If you get her online textbook, you'll be fine. There are lots of grades and a good amount of homework. Exams are decently easy.
Professor Lyons is a good professor and she knows what she's talking about! I will say though that this class is SOOO MUCH WORK. The notes take me so long to write. The exams can be pretty difficult too, so be prepared to study a lot!
I really liked Professor Lyons. I will say there are definitely easier professors for Psych 160. If you do the reading and the practice assignments, you should get an A or B in the class. I honestly found her lectures super interesting and informative, and they helped me with the material for the tests. The tests can be difficult, so study hard!
Tests used to be take home, not anymore. Lectures are long and confusing and so are tests. Theres a lot of outside work to do and I dont think she understands the difficulty as tests were take home before and Im sure students did well. She gets confused when we dont do well but lectures are so hard to follow.
Professor Lyons is an excellent teacher. The content in itself is difficult but she did a very good job explaining it. To do well in the class I highly suggest actually reading the book and studying.
Dr. Lyons is my favorite professor! I would retake her class a thousand times. She is so sweet and really cares about the topic and her students. TAKE THIS CLASS! It is so worth it.
She is an amazing professor. If you go to lectures and take notes like a literal machine you will be totally fine. Most of the exam questions are straight from the practice questions and lectures. Will allow open note if she knows an exam is hard, our final exam is online at home and open note which is amazing. she gives lots of grade boosters too.
Claire is a great prof. The class was super easy and was primarily just lectures. There are a good amount of assignments, but they are incredibly easy and boost your grade a ton.
Goes too fast and the exams are hard.
PSYC160 is extremely content heavy for a gened. I am in two 300 lvl courses and often spend just as much time (if not more)on psyc readings and work than those classes. Lyons is really nice, and my fav thing about her is that she is always looking for a way to improve her class. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Make sure to take notes!
Attendance isn't rlly mandatory if you do the polleverywheres but its important to go. lots of grades and easy assignments
She is very open to class feedback and is willing to adjust her lectures to make sure students are understanding and succeeding. She is also very kind and always clearly states her expectations and rules for the class.
Professor Lyons is caring and I would say that her lectures improved throughout the year, but overall they were pretty stale. She wrote the textbook which is kind of hard to follow and filled with typos. She is willing to adjust to feedback and cares a lot about your education. Lots of reading and grades harshly the two group activities we did.
Relatively easy gen ed if you put in the work. There are so many little assignments that can boost your grade and you have have multiple attempts on almost everything except the exams. I took good notes in class, studied 1-2 days before exams, and got A's on all of them. Attendance is mandatory and is 20% of your grade, but you get 4 absences.
Not a bad class overall; however, I was not a fan of her lectures and certain policies. No use of electronics for note-taking, unless given permission, and she stopped the lecture to address one person on their phone a few times in a 300 student class. Tests are not bad, but I found the lectures quite boring.
