This class was AWESOME! And so was Claire. Probably the most informative and fun teacher I will ever have! You have to attend class, but its always fun, no tests and quizzes, though a substantial amount of projects and papers. All worth it! She's a fair grader, and is willing to help if you ask!

If you have the chance to take this class, do it. It is a lot of work, but the lessons you learn not only English related, but life related are totally worth it.

One of the best teachers I have ever had! You need to go to class. There are no tests but there are a lot of writing assignments/projects. However all the topics for the papers are really interesting and she puts a lot of effort into grading them and giving feedback. You will make some of your best friends in this class!

This was by far my favorite class I've taken and it's not even my major. Claire was such a great professor, we didn't need to use a textbook because she knew everything and helped us every step of the way. I wish there were more professors like her, she brings out the best person possible in all of her students and that's what the world needs.

She is the absolute best! No tests, no finals, very understanding. She takes a lot of interest in her students. Her classes fill up quick you have to get her. From one college student to another I'm telling you, ENROLL IN HER CLASS!

Claire is sweet, makes things creative, and this is a different class than most ENL101's. She comes from the business world, so we made infographics, focused on journalistic writings, and learned a lot about ourselves and what we believed in. There's work every night, but it's relatively simple. She really wants to see you do well, too.

Professor McCarthy is awesome! She genuinely cares about the students and the subject. There are a few papers, but she explains every detail so it's clear as to what we have to do to get a good grade. She makes the class enjoyable, and doesn't pile on too much work that you're overwhelmed, but does have mini-assignments that go with each lesson.

Really cares and adapts her style to help

This isn't a class that you can't just show up and pass, participation definitely matters and so do assignments. But she is AWESOME, I wish she taught more classes! She genuinely cares about her students, and she takes time to know who you are. Her assignments are crystal-clear, and if you ever need anything she is perfectly willing to help you.

Get ready to read, write, be challenged, and have a great time too! This isn't a class where you can sit in the back, skid by, and be anonymous. I'm not an English major, so I took this class on a whim. I'm very happy I did, a professor couldn't be more caring or willing to provide help. If you're willing to put in the effort, you'll be great!

She's one of those teachers who really wants her students to succeed, not only in her class but in life as well. She cares, which if you ask me if hard to find in a professor now a days. As long as you do all the work and follow her very clearly written assignments on canvas there's no way you won't get an A. Wish I could take more of her classes.

If you are a student who is quiet, shy, doesn't like to read, or procrastinates; do not take this professor. I think she is great but you must get involved in the class and engage in your assignments. The class is very easy, just participate and do all of your work and it'll be an easy A. Don't be afraid to take her! Also, don't be absent.

If you miss class more than 3-4 times, you pretty much fail. Having said that, she's very in depth with her teaching. If you go the extra mile you will be rewarded well. She should be teaching high level classes given her style of teaching and workload, but don't pass up on her class. Very fun to talk to, caring and compassionate teacher.

Claire was an awesome professor. She was always very happy and a real jokester. Her grading was fair and the assignments were easy enough. She did "require" a textbook for class but we only used it two or three times which is always annoying. Overall I'd highly recommend taking Professor McCarthy for English.

Claire is a great teacher, but she is scattered. We start one assignment and have to switch to another without finishing the first. If you strive for structure, this is not the professor for you. Lots of laughs with Claire. She will really make you feel "at home".

Good teacher great person

My first English teacher during my time at SSU. She was mostly a very helpful person, kind, and VERY enthusiastic about the material. She and I got along very well & I still see her around every now & again. I like that she let you express yourself when she assigned a paper. Very open prompts. I loved that. TAKE HER CLASSES IF YOU CAN!

Single handedly the best teacher I've ever had in my life!! Claire is very caring and a total gem. She has a positive influence and really makes you feel confident about your witting skills. You will not regret taking her class.

Claire was an absolute gem to have. While crazy at times, she brings humor to every class and you can tell she cares about every student individually. To write her major papers, she gives you multiple smaller steps to achieve your writing goal.

Take Claire! She is caring, animated, and helpful. She will take the time to get to know her students, and will work with you to be sure you are performing at your best. You can get feedback on your pieces just from her, or you can workshop it in front of the class for positive feedback. There are only a few assignments, and you choose your topics.

Claire was the nicest and funniest professor I have had so far. There are a lot of assignments but plenty of time to complete them and most of them were pretty fun. I'm not much of a writer but I feel I definitely improved in her class.

Claire is extremely hilarious! There are a lot of assignments, but each and everyone helps you become a better writer and a better student. With the amount of assignments given you learn how to manage your time much better. I highly recommend her as a teacher. The level 4 of difficulty isn't because its hard, but because you have to work hard.

I took Professor McCarthy for Short Story (online) and the only thing I can say is that I wish this class had been in the classroom. There was a lot of work, but it wasn't hard and it was meant to inspire you to write. I LOVED this class and this professor. She gave me great feedback and encouraged me to publish my writing. Really nice and easy to work with. Her class is not hard, just as long as you do all the work that she gives and turn it in on time. Sometimes she extends the deadline, and sometimes lets the class leave early! She gives really helpful feedback on your papers. Totally would take another class with her.

Honestly, I took this class last second in order to become full time status on campus. I haven't taken a English class in a long time and figured since I was graduating soon, I could use a refresher. The class was very manageable and professor was very realistic with expectations and very real as a professor. Absolutely take her!

I've had Claire McCarthy twice and I think she is a great professor. She is very easy to talk and very understanding. She always wants to hear your voice and what you have to say on certain things. She is also one of the few professors that actually wants to know who you are as a person. There is work but not too much, so it won't drive you crazy.

Took her for ENL 220, it's always a gamble taking an online class but Claire was awesome! She made the class really fun. Even if you aren't an english major or writing is not your forte do not be afraid to take this class! She makes you feel comfortable and accepted at whatever level of writing you're at. Do the work and you will be just fine.

She also gave a lot of extra credit and as long as you do the work you should get an A+.
