Wasn't sure that I'd like psychology when I started, but Ms McElvaney made the course enjoyable. I never realized how much psychology was used in our everyday lives. A useful course and a fantastic teacher.
She is so sweet and will help you out as much as she can. She also emails back very quickly and even last min. She has great lectures. Class isn't hard, its actually fun. She loves teaching psychology but she doesn't go through the book (word for word) so make sure to read it. I recommend it.
before taking psycology 150 i thought it was going to be boring but after i took i realized that you can look at peopl and definately tell what is going on with them she healped us realize that i loved her because she helped me so much this summer
Took online in the 8 week mini semester. Very easy discussion board, quiz, and sometime a special assignment every week. One 3 page paper with a power point presentation turned in at the end of the semester. Make sure you're not plagiarizing as she uses safe assign and will catch you.
She is best teacher I have seen. So nice and attentive to her students. She rocks
Great teacher! Very relatable and kept the lecture fun. Interesting activities, made us laugh, and every now and then gave us candy. Easy to understand and very approachable.
Awesome teacher! She makes learning enjoyable! Easy to understand and very friendly. I would highly reccomend taking pysch with her!
She is a character! She is very interesting to listen to and is hilarious. I would recommend taking her class! She is very clear and logical about what needs to be done and she makes things simple. Her assignments make you think but they are not difficult. she also grades fairly. The best thing about her is that she works hard!
Mrs. Mcelvaney is by far the best teacher that I have ever had. Her lectures are very interesting and I actually enjoyed going to her class. She tells you exactly what you need to know for the tests so as long as you study you should be able to get a good grade. I highly recommend this teacher.
I took her class online and it was awful. The power points only had pictures and no writing. Her class was easy online but i didn't learn anything. The test were very hard because she didnt teach us any of the information
Mrs. McElvaney is AMAZING!!! She is so funny and her lectures are hilarious! She tries to help you out as much as she can so she will give you discussion tests because she wants to help you get a good grade. When she talks about uncomfortable things in class she makes them so funny and teaches you about it all. Her tests aren't bad at all! LOVE HER
Mrs. McElvaney is a great teacher. She does all that she can to make sure that you know the material and always is willing to help. She answers emails very quickly and makes sure all you're questions have been answered.
I loved her!! I had her for a whole year for both general psychology and developmental. She is helpful if you need it. Both classes require work however if you study they are easy. She cares so much about the class and her students. Take her class!!! She is the best!!
I loved her class! She goes out of her way to help students and is understanding about difficult circumstances. Read the book and listen to the lecturespowerpoints, and you'll be fine. She is hilarious and such an inspirational individual!
She is a great teacher! She relates the material to real life and refers a lot to The Walking Dead (which was a major plus for me). You'll have a fun time in her class and actually learn stuff.
I cannot begin to tell you what an amazing person Mrs. Mc is! She is one of the strongest, most inspirational women I have met! She gives super-fun extra credit assignments, rewards, and activities in class. She connects with students deeply, has the biggest heart ever, and yet will hold you accountable. The homework is very helpful to the course.
Ms. Mac is an exceptional professor. Lectures are easy to follow, meaningful, and a lot of fun! She's not afraid to use her family as examples when explaining certain topics, which makes her so down to earth & approachable. Tests are from the power point slides and lecture. I would definitely take more of her classes!
Love love love love this teacher. She's an interesting lady, I loved her personal stories, she has a lot of background in developmental psych so it helped us learn the subject. Tests were pretty easy if you knew the material. She wants you to pass the class and will help you get there.
Mrs McElvaney is by far the best teacher I've had in college period. Her class can be tough and you do have to study and put the effort in, but what sets her aside from any other teacher I've had is that whatever is going on, you can talk to her. She genuinely cares about her students like they are her own children. I urge you, take her class.
Mrs. McElvaney was amazing this semester. Towards the beginning its all the boring information and she does fairly well getting it across in a decently interesting way. If you're an auditory learner you are absolutely golden, but if you like visual over time it gets better! I had a high C for the and ended up with an A. Just take notes!!
I love this professor, I have taken 281 (currently) and took another with her previously. The only thing I did not like about this class was it was online only. This professor is way to fun to not be in a seated class. All her classes need to be seated she is THAT great! Very helpful, encouraging, and available.
Absolutely amazing. I would definitely take her again, she was funny and lectures were entertaining. She brings props to demonstrate concepts. Gives tons of extra credit, It's impossible to get lower than an A on a test
Mrs. McElvaney does as much as she can within reason/her power to help you succeed! Put forth quality effort & focus on conceptualizing, & you should earn no less than a B. Grading & deadlines are BEYOND clear! I've taken her for Developmental(241) & Abnormal(281-online)- she is wonderful/positive. Anticipate one major paper/project & get her help.
She is a great professor! Grades fairly and clearly outlines what she expects. I would definitely take her class again.
I always looked forward to going to her classes. She is so understanding and sweet. Honestly she makes me want to take more psych classes.
She is an out standing teacher she really cares for everyone in her class room and get ready to have fun with her. P.S don't even try to use your phone because she always knows
She was great. She talks a lot but he lectures are good!
Mrs. McElvaney is an amazing professor. She has been so much in her personal life that makes it so inspiring to hear her teach. She is incredible and I cannot wait to take another psychology class with her. Her lectures were so easy to understand because she could relate some to every day life, so glad I took her.
She was my most fun teacher. Great lectures and an overall really fun class. I always walked wishing I could stay longer! She's upfront about what she wants and gives partial credit on test questions (discussion ones). Such a great teacher. I'd easily take her again.
Professor McElvaney is an excellent instructor. The assignment requirements are very clear and she is a reasonable grader. The feedback on assignments is constructive and encouraging. Professor McElvaney has an abundance of personal and professional experience in psychology, which she often shares as a teaching tool.
AMAZING! Really cares about her students. Gives lots of extra credit. You can get an A in this class if you try. One of the best teachers I've had. Lots of papers to write in the online class. Exams come straight from the tests. Take Ms Mac I promise you won't regret it. She goes out of her way to help you succeed!
She was absolutely lovely! She is inspirational and hilarious and made the class very interesting
45% of the grade comes from Mid term, One research paper and final. All the papers, quizzes and test don't account for much of your final grade, no extra credit.
Ms Mac is AWESOME. She shares personal experiences as a tool to teach psychology; she really speaks from the heart. She brings insane humor, wit and intelligence to class which I will never forget. She is such a character! I had so much fun in her class and would take her again in a heartbeat. 5 tests, 1 paper, no homework. Easy grader. Love her!!
Prof. McElvaney is a real gem. Really thorough, challenging, and inspirational lessons. Great online course. Really cares about her students! Assignments arent easy but they are interesting and thought provoking. Awesome instructor!
A lot of weekly assignments/quizzes. Study all your quizzes and utilize quizlet for the exams. Definitely read the textbook because the powerpoints aren't very informative. Overall, Prof. McElvaney is very warm and super invested in the class, like you literally couldn't ask for a better teacher attitude wise.
Best class ever!!!! She is very clear about her expectations and truly cares about her students she will help you any way she can. She was very supportive through a rough semester and kept us updated on what was to come. She is a very unique individual which makes the class interesting. Great teacher!!!!
Wonderful teacher! I would highly recommend her to both psych majors and non-psych majors. She really makes the course interesting.
I will definitely take her again. She is very pro-student, and will help you as long as you show that you care and want to learn.
I love Professor Mac! She absolutely knows what she is talking about during lecture and if you take great notes from class, know the material on her lecture slides and worksheets you are golden! She looks out for her students and I definitely will take from her again.
Very hard grader expected work from a 4 yr university/college in a masters or doctorate! I know a lot comments say awesome but beware
Prof. Mac is a great professor! She does give one paper in PSY 150 which is tough, but if you get good sources and research, you'll be fine. Study terms for every test and you'll get an A. She makes the class very fun and interactive.
I'm sure she means well. She's got a respectable life story behind her too. But unfortunately, she is just a little too intense. I've even taken this BASIC LEVEL psy class before, and I can barley remember any of it! She is way to strict on her papers, attendance, and policies. Makes an easy class way too difficult. Never. Again. Sorry. Best Wishes
Shes funny and straight up about her policies. She gives tough tests but if she says it in class its on the test. Guaranteed. Shes fair. Doesnt put up with much but applies the same rules to the whole class. Always willing to help outside of class time and gives real life examples to make the material make sense. She is awesome!
She really cares about her students. Is lecture heavy because there's a lot of information she has to cover, so make sure you show up to class every day. Gives lots of supplemental information to help you learn. Responds to emails quickly. Gives you extra credit opportunities all the time. Overall would recommend for PSY 150.
I really enjoyed this class. Professor McElvaney is a great instructor. I am not saying this because I passed the class. Behind my passing her class came with studying hard. This professor cares about her student, and when you leave Wake Tech, she still cares. What you put in... is what you will get out of the class. Best to you all.
She does what 2 yr colleges are supposed to do: prepares you for a 4 yr. I have taken 3 of her classes, she makes it easy to follow along during/outside of class. She is an actually clinical psychologist who creates fun projects and saying that helps people to remember materials. She grades hard but offers to give feedback before they are even due.
Best professor! Great lectures. Tells a lot of personal stories that help teach the lesson. Really interesting and will help if you ask. Show up on time. Dont procrastinate with the essay. Essay and quizes is a big part of grade make sure to do them.
McElvaney was amazing and had a great story. She was super inspirational and passionate about psychology. She was very helpful and her tests were quite easy as long as you study at least a little bit.
Queen Mac is a gem. Take her if you need a Psych class. you will not regret it. Because of her, I managed to graduate!
Great person, truly passionate about the material. She gets very personal & allows you to do the same. Won't answer emails right away but doesn't take too long either. Gives good feedback if you send your assignments prior to due date but is a little vague when answering questions. Lots of assignments and material though, and tests a little hard.
I took this course online and it was a mess. First of all, who does the half-weeks? The semester began on Thursday, so we had our week's dues twice-Sun and Wed. Like there would be a paper due Wed and Quizz/Discussion due Sun. Second, her instructions were so confusing, paper feedback poor, and she'd take up to 20 pts off for minor formatting error
Professor Mac is an amazing lecturer! She connects information to real life in ways that make you easily understand and remember it. You can tell she is passioinate and very knowledgable about what she is talking about. Any material on the test is gone over in class, so I found myself not reaching for the textbook very often.
She can be sweet at times, but when you write papers for her, she is extremely strict. If you have even one tiny incident of where you don't cite something correctly, she gives you a zero and reports you to the deans office for plagiarism. It got to the point where I just didn't turn in her papers anymore, because I didn't want to get suspended.
The best professor I have ever had. So very caring and responsive when you have a question. Very clear expectations and gives great feedback. I would take her class again and again if I could. Please take her Abnormal Psychology class, she is the best professor for this class. Work hard and you will pass. The tests are a little hard so study hard.
The only thing she could have done better with was the paper we had to write and she didn't go over how to include the statistical data from a journal into our research paper. But otherwise, she was great at responding to emails fast and was pretty funny. She had clear expectations and Was happy to clarify if asked.
Prof. Mac was one of my first professors at Wake Tech & she set a high bar for both the standards that needed to be met and also her desire to help you meet them. Read everything she tells you carefully. Follow her instructions. Watch/read the resources outside of the textbook (they will be in the tests). If in doubt, ask her for help! Great prof!
There is a lot of work to do, but it's not unmanageable. There is a test every week. Prof. Mac does not accept late work. She cares about her students and always provides interesting videos each week. I would absolutely take her class again.
Professor McElvaney is amazing. Her lectures are extremely interesting and she herself is inspirational. Sincerely cares for her students. Perhaps the best prof I have ever met.
Professor McElvaney is kind and encouraging. Students can tell that she genuinely enjoys Psychology by her communication and intriguing assignments. She gives clear and direct feedback on all projects and discussion boards. Overall, be prepared to work hard, but it is worth it. She is excellent!
I've only ever gotten one B and this was my final semester (so I've taken a few classes) and I received a C. I tried as hard as any other class I've taken. Her quizzes and tests have 2 multiple choice answers that could be correct on several questions making it impossible to be sure to get good grades. She is inconsistent when grading papers.
Such a sweet and friendly woman. This class was interesting, and I would do it again. I highly recommend it.
I LOVED this course. Prof McElvaney is extremely kind and genuinely wants her students to do well. The class does require a lot of effort, but I can guarantee you that it is worth it. The paper is a bit tricky but she provides all the material needed to do well. I would absolutely recommend taking PSY281 with professor McElvaney!
This is class is ok as long as you read the textbook and do well on the round tables, during my second week of school i caught covid and asked for an extension and was denied it, unless i gave proof that i had a hospital note or i had been to the hospital because of covid which i think that is a bit extreme.
Professor Mac is one of the best teachers I've ever had. She is strict when it comes to plagiarism and is a tough grader, but she tells you exactly what she wants for each assignment. She offers extra credit and truly cares about her students passing. I already plan on taking another psychology class with her.
Honestly, this was one of the best classes I've had in a long time, Professor Mac is so caring and truly wants you to understand the course material. She is always available and loves to help! The assignments were genuinely enjoyable and I hope to take more classes with her. I highly recommend taking psychology courses with her, 10 out of 10!
You can tell Prof. McElvaney is very passionate about this subject. It makes the class very interesting and enjoyable. Assignments were easy as long as you put the time in, and she gave good feedback. Was very interactive with her students. Can't recommend her enough.
I had her for my first semester of college in Fall 2021. She is amazing and supportive. Her quizzes and tests were open book but you need to know your notes and the readings to do well. I got an A but it was not easy. I did have to work but she was there every step of the way. I have never had anyone so supportive and loving other than my own mom.
A great professor who is always encouraging students to not be stressed. I like the way she says in every exam that this exam can't decide your future. Easy A. Extra credits. Not much homework. Also, she gives homework that we can use in our profile paper (which is worth 15% of the total grade).
It's important to go to her lectures because she uses material that she does NOT make available to her students online. You have to go to her lectures or you will miss this crucial material and she will NOT give it you outside of class. The quizzes will have questions on topics not covered by the textbook. This wasn't a hard class though.
Dr. McElvaney is passionate about psychology, and her lectures are ALWAYS interesting and fun. In theory there is a textbook, however if you take good notes during her lectures, you will know all of the material on the tests.
Dr. McElvaney is a great professor, but also an inspiring person. She provides clear expectations for assignments and answers questions thoroughly. She offers optional material if you're interested in a specific topic. She was very thoughtful and encouraging in her feedback. I took Abnormal psych over the summer, which was very interesting.
I have taken this professor for psy 281, 239 and she is one of the best professors out there. A lot of people complain about her essay requirements, all you have to do is make an appointment with ILC and they will help you follow the directions. She grades by quizzes, four tests including the exam, and discussion boards. 10/10 recommend.
Horrible.
Terrible! She gave me a 0 for a paper after she did not answer my question about citations then she said it was unintentional plagiarism. If she were to just answer my question I would have gotten a 95 on my paper. The paper was 12% of my grade and she gave me a 0 for a question she did not answer. My grade went from a 95 to an 80.She doesn't teach
you will get no more than 70 on the paper which is worth 15% of your grade.
There is one paper that counts for a lot of your grade, and she grades it pretty harshly. However, other than that the class is pretty easy. As long as you read the chapter and watch the videos she puts on blackboard, the class is very simple. Theres one or two assignments every week, but sometimes she'll take one off to relieve stress :)
I took her class back in 2022. Not sure what changed. But I loved her teaching style. She was always responsive with her emails and helped out if you needed. She wants her students to pass and that is the most important thing with professors. She truly does care about you! Take her but make sure you follow her directions CAREFULLY!
I honestly loved her and her class. She gave barely any homework and we only had a quiz a week. You do have to do a paper in her class which is about 10 pages, but she gives you a week off to work on it. I would recommend her for psych.
She is super sweet and very understanding during any extenuating circumstances, she's one of the best prof's I've had in this school. There is a lot of quizzes and a handful of tests but in general its all very easy as long as you've done the reading. She gives great feedback and is very gentle when grading.
She was very gracious and was an amazing teacher.
She's a nice professor, but she's an EXTREMELY tough grader. Even after reading the book and getting help with the research paper, it's hard to get a decent grade. Her exams on blackboard don't allow you to review answers and can't see where you failed. She deducts pts for insignificant things and some questions on the quizzes are NOT in the book.
Threw the text book at us, chapter exams practically determine your entire grade
This class was difficult because you are expected to memorize entire chapters and extra weekly readings/ videos. Yes, quizzes were open-book, but exams were not. Exams were based on 3 chapters at a time. You could not go back to change your answer. Scheduling appointments for help was difficult due to her not responding to emails.
Very tough grader, her quizes are difficult and you only get one attempt. All tests will be proctored and will cover 3 chapters at a time. There will be one big project that she will offer well written instructions for. All that said, she is very sweet, passionate and helpful, but you gotta work for that grade in her class, good luck!
Great professor, cares about her students, is very knowledgable.
