She is as good as they get...before writing essays, she holds discussions so that each student is clear about what to write and she grades fairly. If you're open-minded, take her class! She's great!

Pretty simple class, but incredible amounts of writing for a summer course. If you know how to structure an essay and argue well, this is the class for you.

Make sure you do ALL of the homework assignments, and the lowest grade you can get is a "B". Make sure you like writing, and have your structure down, otherwise, your gonna have a hard time writing all the essays. She is a little bit off, but it makes class better. Reminds me of the woman from Fight Club. :)

Very involved instructor, gives plenty of time to complete assignments and is very helpful to those who want it. She's funny, very observant, adaptable, and accessible. Interesting topics for essays and discussion. If you're not intersted in growing as a student, don't take her class. You'll be the ass of the class.

Ms. Phillips is a very good & thorough teacher. She provides interesting essay topics & facilitates intellectual classroom discussions. She writes notes on your returned essays & then she goes a step further by calling you up to discuss your paper where she give you more tips & pointers. She is very generous with her comments & criticism.

Very easy class! She seems hard in the beggining, but she really isn't! All you have to do is do your essays, which are extremely easy, do vocab logs and take class notes which she collects. I do recommend her, she will help you and you can email her, & she does email back. She does have her own way of teaching, but it is really helpful! Loved her!

Some of my classmates thought she's too serious but Professor Phillips has a great sense of humor, she always talks about serious issues concerning current affairs and intelligently jokes about them. She wrote 4 or 5 books and she is the winner of the Academy of American Poets, first prize. She's beautiful, caring and wonderful.

She seemed very difficult in the beginning, but I loved her class. She explains everything, but doesn't like stupid question. To get an A you just have to pay attention to her, write everything down and show that you are trying hard. Very nice professor and person.

I took Phillips for English 101 and 104. Best professor out there. You think she is going to be mean at the beginning but I think this is her way to weed out the knuckleheads. You will learn hot write properly in her class. She is easily one of my favorite professors and i recommend her to all students.

during my semester, the class seemed to know what was going on but she sort of changes her mind as she goes along. We had a few essays that were fairly easy IF you did it her way. pay attention to what she wants and write EXACTLY what shes looking for. she gave me an A because of my effort and determination to get an A. This professor helped me become a better writer, insisting I revise between essays. I followed guidelines, which were made crystal clear, and was able to improve. The topics were especially interesting: science fiction, true crime, and noir. An unusual professor, but very smart.

I loved Claire's class. She helped me to work in the Learning Center as a tutor. I am transferring to UCLA in fall. Take as many classes as you can with her if you are serious about the Humanities!

At first I wasn't sure what to think about this professor. She seemed so serious about grammar and editing. In the end though I learned so much about critical analysis, she became one of my favorites. Plus we watched videos about a mortician, which was hilarious and fun.

Professor Phillips had us read a lot which was hard at first. Then after a couple of guest lectures it got easier. She made me a laugh a lot which helped. I'd take her for 102 next semester.

I took this class thinking it wold be the easy A. Not true. But she is fair, and if I work in the Writing Center I get points. The reading is interesting at least. That's a plus.

I took this class in summer 2014 and it was pretty easy and fast going. All of her essays were literally based on true crime movies and short stories. Her essays were hard; however, I did my best and i got A's on all of them. If she sees improvement, she gives you better grade than before. Her research paper was hard too but I passed that too.

The interesting part of the class is reading a book and before writing an essay about it, meeting the author. Claire does everything to educate students. She is a kind professor. Take her class.

This 102 class was so much fun. No one has asked me to be so creative before. Challenging, but not in the usual way. Claire doesn't waste time on the same old busy work. I won't forget the discussions or the movies. She is funny too. And loves a good pet story! If you are willing to revise between drafts, you will get a good grade.

I learned a lot how to structure essays in this class. We had helpful guidelines and worked with the instructor and tutor on drafts. The topics were fun. Creative. I wish I could take her English 102 this semester but I have a conflict. Take her if you want to learn the basics but have some fun too!

Professor Claire Phillips's English 102 class was by far the most interesting and thought provoking class I've taken so far at GCC. Lecture is based on the reading assignments given throughout the semester (good books!) and although she goes off tangents on politics and education they are meaningful to our lives. Gives really helpful feedback too!

The books we read for this class were so different from a typical English class. Discussion was fun, and we had lots of time to revise essays and work in the Learning Center. I will miss Claire's funny lectures.

This professor is a very clear grader and helps you with assignments by providing guidelines. She also gives enough feedback that you can improve with every assignment. I learned more than I thought I would. I took her for English 101 and decided to take her again. Take her if you want to improve your writing for advanced college classes.

I really improved my writing skills because of her class. She's very sarcastic & witty. Don't let the syllabus fool you, we didn't do most of those assignments. She is a little disorganized but very caring and helps you become a better writer. One of the books she has you read is extremely challenging, though.

I learned a lot in this class about writing essays. There was a lot of discussion, mainly about the novels we read and the reading series we attended. Sometimes students shared their own work with the class which really helped. We had plenty of time to develop drafts and outlines before handing in final drafts.

Claire challenges us to write academic style papers. The short stories we read were different from most assigned readings. We learned about the Uncanny and Fantastic. I would take her again even though she made me work for the A. She demands that you take a lot of notes during class during her lectures.

Great teacher. I will never look at literature the same way. I thought I would hate the readings but most of they were pretty great. She has an odd sense of humor and it took me a while to understand it. Pretty easy grading. Just do the readings, write your papers, look for basic mistakes and revise, and you will be fine.

Claire is by far one of the best professors I have taken throughout my college career. She's funny, caring, and passionate. She speaks to you with respect and is never condescending. It's really simple: show up, do the work/read, engage with the material, and under her guidance, I guarantee you will grow intellectually as well as an individual.

This class is great if you enjoy horror movies and group work, but I did not. She goes off topic a lot. Still, Claire tells us what she's looking for in our essays and gives us opportunities to improve. She's invested in her students and grades fairly, but this is not the easiest class.

Take Claire if you're a good reader/writer. She barely assigns any work, is very disorganized, and has unclear grading criteria, but if you write quality essays, easy A. She's really weird, but in the end you learn a lot because you view literature in a way you never did. There are better English profs out there, but Claire is good too!

The instructor's style of teaching English 101 was out-of-the-box and made learning English 101 an extraordinary experience. Intent listening, active participation& doing homework enhance what you learn, understand and get graded for in this class. I had Phillips for 102 and it was such a great class. The books we read were not so traditional, we had 2 take home essays and the final project was an in class essay that she gave you weeks to prepare for. we discussed very interesting topics and it was overall a great classroom to be in. she also brought her doggo with her so that's a major plus.

My class with Professor Phillips was fantastic. The books she assigned were excellent, interesting, modern literature. Claire was super nice the entire time! Quarantine was an unexpected complication, but she was very nice about due dates. She cares deeply for her students! She made sure we knew about food pantries, and where we could get computers and other items for class. She was understanding about technological issues, and she is always willing to help!

Professor Phillips was my teacher for English 101. the class was switched to online due to pandemics. she always asked how we were and if we needed anything and that showed her personality. she made us laugh and allowed us to discuss what was important to us. I will encourage others to take her class since they can learn a lot from her. :)

I had her for Spring 2020 and the beginning ing of the semester it was real cool since we were able to get to know everyone in person until this pandemic happened we went online. Our class meets were every Wednesday every week& it was not that bad. You actually have to do your paperwork. The more you push yourself you'll have great outcomes!

Claire is such a fun professor, I am so glad I took her class. Since I took it during the summer, the spacing was off and the last three essays were all super close together, but manageable. No homework is graded and we wrote mostly on movies. She loves getting to know her students and asks that everyone participates during class discussions.

A fun class where writing was usually based off of modern-day movies and TV shows. She likes engaging her class in discussions and there is only a few papers and almost no other assignments. We were a bit behind so the last 2 papers were very close to each other but overall an easy class to take and pass with a good grade.

I went into this class thinking that it was going to be a dull English class. Claire really inspired me to do more research on everything we encounter in life. The topics that we spoke upon were COVID-19, Disabilities, Racism & overall it has been very interesting to learn more about the different author's perspectives as well as my classmates.

Overall her class isn't too difficult. The professor is super sweet and cares about her students, so if you're ever struggling just ask her for help and she'll work with you. I took her for the winter semester so it was fast paced and there was a lot of reading but if you keep up with it you're sure to pass the class.

I'm finishing up this semester with Claire (she likes us to use her first name) and I'm a bit bummed time went by so quickly. No textbook but we did read two novels (great reads). This professor is really fun and if you have any issues or concerns she always helps you out as much as she can, via zoom or her business hours. Would take her again!

She cares a lot about issues going on around the world so be prepared for discussions like that. The workload is very limited. You have discussions but mainly the 4 essays that never exceed 1,800 words so very doable. she doesn't expect you to be this experienced writer. Just answer the prompt she gives and I promise you will get an A.

Claire is a really kind Professor who wants to connect with her students. You have to read 2 books for the class and will write 4 essays. She gives amazing feedback on your essays which genuinely made me a better writer. She sometimes gets a little distracted and the end of the class is a bit rushed, but I never felt overwhelmed. I took this class twice, and Claire never disappointed! The essays were short but impactful, and she taught me how to communicate clearly and directly in my writing. Claire was open, and supportive, and gave plenty of room for revisions, making the class a great learning experience. With effort and research, passing was easy.
