She really wants to help the students and will help you learn even the silliest of concepts. Don't be afraid to ask her for help, she may sound critical but she just wants to know how much you know.
she doesn't explain very well or in much detail. If you have a question she'll be annoyed and if you don't want to annoy her and ask your neighbor she gets mad at that too. Going to her office wasn't much of a help because she just flat out gets annoyed with almost anything you do to try to learn if you don't get it right off the bat.
Organized. You know exactly what is coming and what to prepare for. Lots of homework, but not more than was necessary to get the hang of the material. Hard class, but I really feel like I got a lot out of it. Comprehensive final.
She is the worst my teacher that I have ever had. Math comes really easy for me, and I studied really hard and still did poorly. Her tests are way hard, and I would take her class at last resort and prepare to fail tests.
Lectures are confusing and tests are really hard
Very difficult, but she's there to help. Lectures are confusing, and the tests are extremely difficult, so you will have to study if you have this professor and this class.
Difficult class and very difficult tests. She is there to help so dont be afraid to ask questions. She is not so critical once you get to know her.
Claire Watson is about as terrible as math instructors get. I've never had as much of a problem understanding concepts as I do in her class. I got as much out of the class from not going as I did from going. The majority of my classmates just complain about her as well. Her office hours are limited so that's no help either.
This is a really hard class but honestly I've heard that nobody understands calc II. Claire is really nice and helpful once you get to know her. Make SURE you go to her office hours and you ask lots of questions
She moves too fast in class to take any good notes out of the lecture and the test are ridiculously hard
she seemed to be teaching people who know math and not those who dont know math. I thought she was decent, and she was helpful when I went to her to get some extra help but the lectures went really fast and few people ever asked questions because it was hard to keep up. The exams were hard but she was willing to help nudge you along and give help
Fast lectures. Go to the math lab for help.
Really a nice teacher who is very willing to help during office hours. She goes fast in lectures so be ready to write lots of notes quickly. Probably the only teacher who will try to point you in the right direction during a test.
Great Prof
HARD HARD HARD!!! You think you know the material until you see the test questions..... moves very fast in lectures and did I say the tests are hard... because they are hard.
She moves incredibly fast during class. You can barely keep up with what she is saying let alone have time to take notes. Tests are incredibly difficult. Worst math teacher I've ever had.
Claire is a super nice helpful lady, she will bend over backwards to help you. She is confusing though. And her tests are the worst things ever.
If you have a choice, do not take this class from Watson. She's rude and always seems mad when people ask for any help. Also, she is horrible at lecturing and explaining topics. Overall, a horrible class.
She has a very strong European accent which makes it hard to understand her. She goes so fast in class you can't follow her. She also explains simple concepts in the most difficult way possible. If I hadn't already taken this class in high school I would have been 10x more confused.
The tests are really hard, and she can be confusing during lecture. If you get her off script she does a lot better. Go to the review sessions before the test- it's worth it.
Claire can be nice, but not often. Her French accent is very hard to understand, and her handwriting is hard to read. She burns through problems so fast you can't keep up. Her tests are brutal, she gives moderately difficult problems on the homework and test reviews but then writes the most difficult problems possible for the tests.
She definitely makes you work for a good grade, but I really enjoyed her class. Because of her, I understand calculus so much better and feel confident I can solve any math problem
She prints out lecture notes, then reads them verbatim for the entire hour of lecture. Yes Dr. Watson, we all know how to read. Of course you can't just skip her useless lectures because there are i-clicker points (likely due to the fact that nobody went to her lectures). She spends half the class deriving, even though it isn't on the exams.
I took MATH2250 (Linear Algebra & Differential Equations) from her, and it was the hardest class I have ever taken; and I don't think it had to be. She blasts you with information, leaves you with no conceptual understanding, then expects you to be Einstein on the tests. Go to her office hours, that helps.
Claire was an interesting professor.... She is french and occasionally it can be hard to understand her. What bothered me most about her class is when she did equations on the board 99.7% of the time we would have to correct her because she made mistakes she expected us not to make. I recommend going to other professors office hours or reviews.
Don't ever take this professor. Doesn't matter what class she's giving. She is unclear on everything she teaches, offers no help, and is unrealistic in her grading. Expect to argue a lot on her grading if you have her as a professor. Due dates are ridiculous, and most of the time you will not know what is due, and will lose points on everything.
Tough class. You'll be blasted with material in lecture so you'll have to study outside class to pass. Make sure you go to recitation; they're very helpful. If you're having any problem with the material, go talk to her in her office hours. Go over the review they give for tests and understand the concepts. Her tests are very conceptual.
It's very hard to understand what is going on when you go to class. Best thing you can do for yourself is study the textbook and use online sources to explain how to do the homework. Recitation is the only thing that seemed to help out in explanation.
I didn't get much from her lectures. It seems that she is trying to cover so much material that she doesn't have time to stop and check for understanding, and thus leaves a lot of people in the dust. Got a lot from recitation however with the TA. Tests are really hard so make sure to review for them.
Hardest teacher I have ever had. The concepts in this class are not difficult but somehow Claire makes them. She makes the exams ten times harder than any homework or quizzes. She does not give you enough time. Not a fan of Claire Watson at all.
Hard to understand her when she is lecturing. Tests are ridiculously hard, homework everyday, and three quizzes every week. If you don't go to class you won't pass, but you will learn everything in recitation. She teaches different material than what is in the book. But she curves the class at the end by 10+%
angry, not helpful, rude, doesn't explain anything only reason i passed is because i spent many, many hours in the tutoring lab and in TA's office hours. had to read the chapters in the textbook several times to make sense of material, even after lecture
Dr. Watson gets a bad reputation. In my opinion, this is due to her straightforward and slightly non-empathetic nature. If these things bother you, you might want to search somewhere else. However, she really does care about helping her students. If you need extra help, she is willing to give it. Office hours and before-test study sessions aregreat
Good luck understanding anything in lecture or from the book, both are horrible. Go to the recitation, the TA usually teaches the concepts better. Grades very nit picky and not clear on her expectation. Makes frequent mistakes during lectures. Tests will kill or save you, she teaches very analytically but tests and grades on concepts and format.
This course is basically two courses in one. Dr. Watson speeds through lecture because there is so much material. Most of the actual learning is done in recitation. Tests are brutal, three quizzes a week, get ready to study your heart out.
Honestly the material itself for this class isn't bad, its just the way its presented. I wouldn't go to lecture at all if it weren't for the required iclicker questions every class; I don't learn anything from Claire. The way I learned the material was from recitation, using solution manuals as a guide on the homework, and pre-exam review sessions.
Avoid this professor if you can. Lectures are very confusing. Lots of homework that sometimes isn't posted until the night before it's due. If you're stuck with her, a couple of suggestions: go to her office hours and watch lots of Professor Leonard videos on YouTube.
Claire's lectures are the WORST, but her office hours are great. I did most of my learning on my own. My study group was also very helpful. Claire's tests are LONG and hard and that's what made my grade suffer. Ask for help on tests and she will help. It is a way hard class but if you know EVERYTHING on the study guides you'll be fine for tests.
I love professor Watson. She is funny and really cares about the students, if you take a little extra time to get to know her you will really benefit from it. Her teaching style is fast so she works better for students who are fast learners and don't mind doing a little extra outside of class. I would definitely recommend her!
I really Wish that professor Watson would get on her and review the commentary regarding her teaching style. She is by far the worst teacher that i have ever had. I even scored a B in the final of the class. The only thing that helped me understand the materials were the recitations taught by grad students. She is aweful!!!
Don't advise to take it anything with her.
Class is a joke. Lectures are Pointless, she does a horrible job. All material is learned in recitation via recitation instructors. But most of all the tests are B.S. not much of a test of knowledge rather than a race of writing. Class would be better tought by one of the recitation instructors and exams need to be adjusted, more time or less mater
Watson is super smart but I dont think she realizes that we are learning the course for the first time, she moves through material so quick with almost no time to take notes or actually understand, I learned the whole course in recitation. The Exams are very complicated and hard to even finish, plan on 5 quizzes a week as well. Toughest class yet..
This class by far takes up a ton of time. The professor talks a million miles per second and doesn't like to answer questions. The class is so focused on using algebra that you learned years ago and all of the trick that its hard to pass the tests. There are also a ton of quizzes you take like 6 quizzes a week.
Dr. Watson is very helpful when you talk to her during office hours but she hates questions during lecture. The exams are extremely difficult and you only have one class period to complete them. The homework is fairly difficult and time consuming, and recitation is mandatory because quizzes are taken at the end of it.
She goes over the material way too fast and not in a way that can be easily understood. She doesnt show much mercy with grading and insults others intelligence.
Other comments about Claire are unfair. The course covers two classes in one semester, so the class itself will be fast pace. If you don't understand material go to her office hours, and recitation is as helpful as you make it. You are going to need to study, but if you put time in you get time out.
This class is a fire hydrant class. She throws information at you and expects you to absorb as much as possible. I know a lot of people that take it in the summer from someone else that learned so much more. This is a very important topic and the fact that it is this poorly taught is an absolute insult to the students.
The layout of the class is horrible and Claire uses the fact that its a lot of material as an excuse for not helping the students. The recitations are the only places where you will learn anything.
She may be hard to understand at first but after some time her lectures turn out to be very informative and helpful. She doesn't respond kindly to questions most of the time but she cares about her students and will take the time to help them. Her review sessions help a ton to go over the material again and definitely saved my grade.
Claire is one of the best teachers I've ever had. I'm probably not going to pass her class, because of how difficult calc 2 has been, not her. Claire has never lost patience in helping me learn. She seems abrasive, but she's very European and if you're doing something wrong she will tell you. It's because she wants to help. Just ask, she'll help!!
Claire is easy to understand, but very very hard. Ive spent so much time in this class. Theres so much homework. Her tests are fair, but its definitly a hard class.
Claire really is an awesome teacher, her classes are just very hard. This isnt all her fault, the university gives her a lot to cover and she wants to make sure you know it well. She is super helpful one on one. And she will curve the class at the end so you get a better grade than you think you will.
TAKE THE CLASSES SEPARATE OR THE COMBINED OVER THE SUMMER! Read all other comments for the general idea. If you want to stay up every night teaching yourself the material and possibly get a B, take Clair. If you want to understand, get an A, and have a good time, summer for you. This class is the reason 50% don't make professional program.
When the class gets an average of a 30% on a quiz Watson is one of those professors that somehow looks at the stats and thinks "wow these students suck at learning" instead of "wow I did a horrible job of teaching that." She's rude to students that ask questions and grades very hard. Manages to make the material way more complicated than it is.
Moves very fast. Dr. Watson only teaches the theoretical and conceptual side of the material. Attend all SI and UTF sessions because this is where you'll actually learn how to solve problems.
Avoid Claire like the plague. Her lectures are so fast and unorganized. Does not prepare you for the tests at all. Worst professor I've ever had.
Good person outside of class, but unfortunately just isn't a good teacher. She blazes through lectures super fast, so I eventually just stopped going to class and teaching myself out of the textbook instead. The tests are tough, but graded fairly (partial credit given when due)
Doesn't understand students questions. Lectures are confusing. Not many other study materials
I really enjoyed taking a class from Dr. Watson. She goes over a lot of the theoretical in class and I had to use the textbook while doing my homework to get the equations and examples so that I could do the problems, but I like learning that way so it worked for me. She cares a lot about her students who are putting in the effort to understand.
Took Calc 2 from her. As a person she is funny and I felt like she cared about me as a student. However, the nature of the class is very hard and there is a heavy work load. Tutor center will save your life as well as study groups. If you have a hard time understanding thick accents then maybe take from a different prof.
The tests are basically the entire grade and they are way difficult.
Amazing professor. She'll stop her lecture if someone has a question and do her best to answer it. At the start she's a bit hard to understand but you get used to it after a bit. Also really nice and willing to help outside of class and enjoys interacting with the students.
Dr. Watson did a good job this semester, especially with the virus pushing everything online. I would spend 5+ hours a week working on homework. I only did well because I had a basis of Calc III before taking the class. The course material is covered way too quick for one semester.
I can't say enough about how bad my experience with Claire was. She doesn't like to be asked questions and I feel like when I did ask questions, I was ridiculed. Dropped the class a few weeks into the semester.
The tests are most of the grade and are very difficult. I got 100% on almost every homework (which is weekly) and I still failed two out of the three tests. I dropped the class after the midterm because there was no way I could pass the class. I knew 5 or 6 other people who also had to drop the class due to very difficult tests.
I assume that most of the difficulty of this class is due to the challenging nature of DiffEQ in general, but her tests often are full of problems that are needlessly tedious problems. There is only one homework due per week, but usually it takes a very very long time to complete, and you'll definitely be rereading the book to understand concepts.
Dr. Watson takes a minute to warm up to, but I loved her as a professor! She teaches hard classes where the content doesn't come easy, so I would be wary of poor reviews. She is constantly motivating and reminding students that she is there for help. She also gives very good feedback.
This was a hard class, and part of it was how much of the class fell on the tests (it was about 80%). Dr. Watson lectures fast, but she does provide nearly completed notes to follow along. I found she was very accessible outside of class, and did a lot to help students succeed. This is not a class you can coast through.
In class, if a person asked a question she would get an attitude of like why don't you understand this it's simple. She wouldn't explain some steps which makes it difficult to learn a hard new concept.
She does take a bit of getting used to. She does everything on paper, which actually works out in your favor because it allows her to walk through problems with you (she gives good, detailed feedback), plus you can actually get partial credit on tests (which saves your grade!). Easy to get ahold of and always willing to help.
She is pretty bad, but not as terrible as the other comments on here. The course and subject are hard and she has to cover everything so that way we can at least understand what is happening in our engineering classes. The homework is a lot but it forces you to learn everything. She grades hard, but if you put in the work it's doable.
Claire is a good professor. The exams are difficult but she gives practice exams the week before and holds review sessions for each exam. If you put forth the effort you will be prepared for the exam. I highly recommend printing off the guided notes for the lectures
She explains things alright, however her tests are generally not on the material covered/ harder than the material covered. The exam percentages were very low for my class. She has weekly quizzes/ homework Would not recommend and actively avoid this teacher unless she is the only one teaching the class.
Dr. Watson is a really good professor, but her class is very very hard. I think that Calc 2 is hard in general. She is pretty nice, and if you go to reviews, you'll be okay. She has an accent, so take that into account if it's a dealbreaker. She is always willing to help and will work with you during office hours.
Professor Watson is a great teacher. She moves through the material very fast so you have to keep up - I attended every lecture. The tests are hard, but she always has extensive review sessions beforehand that are very helpful and she offers extra credit on the tests. Her grading is quick and clear as well.
Dr. Watson is a great instructor. The course is very traditional in the use of lectures and tests, but is extremely well organized. She has guided notes for every chapter you talk about, and she is always willing to talk through questions. It is definitely difficult and time-consuming, but if you are on top of everything, you will do just fine.
Dr. Watson was great! Lectures could be pretty long and occasionally boring but I enjoyed the class overall. She hosts test reviews that are very helpful. She will always do what she can to help you succeed. She does have a French accent but I could understand her well enough. She cares about everyone in the class.
I could not understand what she was talking about during class. At a certain point I stopped going to class because it was easier to find videos online to explain what I was supposed to do. I did really well in Calc 1 and 2 but this class was so much harder. She graded the homework's super hard. She was really nice and funny but it was a bad class.
She's a nice lady but by far the worst math teacher I've ever had. She gives little time to complete homework and is a very harsh grader with homework and exams. I would recommend avoid taking a class from her at all costs. She has lots of reviews but I was never able to attend do to my part time job.
If you are a math major, you will probably like Professor Watson. Otherwise, her class is probably too pointlessly difficult to be worth taking. Her tests often have questions that are needlessly tedious or require extensive algebra to solve, and were much harder than reviews and homework. She makes the class harder than it needs to be.
I got an A in both Calc 1 and Calc 2 and this class is so much more of a step up in difficulty. Professor Watson covers mostly proofs in lectures instead of talking about how to do the math. The only practice problems covered were at the end of a lecture in a rushed manner and often after the class was scheduled to end so most people missed them.
This class is very test-heavy. She usually drops one of the two midterms, so your final grade is 80% tests. She has guided notes which make studying great, but doesn't record lectures so if you miss a day, you will be in trouble. She is very accommodating and will try her best to fulfill any requests.
If you do your homework and study for each quiz and test, as well as follow along her guided notes outside of lecture, you will get an A. It's a difficult class but it's well worth it, Claire lays out the rules of a concept, proves said concept, then gives a few examples that are all you need to know for the tests and homework. Be there for lecture
I can't pay attention in this class. I thought it was just because it was a hard class but then I realized I can find plenty of resources online that teach me the material far better than her in a shorter period of time.
She moves fast through the content but is happy to stop and answer any questions or go more in-depth. She is funny and understanding of mistakes. There is a quiz and four short worksheets every week.
Many reviews state that Watson is a great professor, but that is only true if her teaching style matches you. If you do well with course content but not so great with exams, strap in. She is available for office hours, so take advantage of that. She wants you to succeed, even if her tests are far more difficult and unrelated to the homework.
She moves REALLY fast through the lectures! I understood the material only because I watched Professor Leonard on Youtube (highly recommend!). There is a quiz EVERY WEEK at the testing center. She doesn't seem to like it when students ask questions in class and also goes through the material like the students aleady understand it and are reviewing
I loved Claire. She was funny and easy to talk to in class and outside of class. She did go quickly through the material, but that is the nature of the course. She goes above and beyond with grading and relationships with students. She was very quick with grading (we got quiz grades the day after they were due and test grades within 2-4 days).
I got all the answers on a quiz 100% correct with no errors and received a 13/20. When I spoke to her later She refused to cooperate or give me full credit for understanding the material because I didn't identify the formula I was using. The question said only “Evaluate” and I did.
Professor Watson isn't mean, but she has a French accent and moves through the material extremely fast. I gave up on physical notes and just recorded lectures. There are no retakes or extra credit opportunities and the class is HARD. My advisor said people often switch to taking the class online because of her, which is what I'm doing.
Considering it was Calc 2, I think Dr. Watson did great at explaining things. She goes through examples after each new concept and will always answer questions thoroughly. There is quite a bit of homework every week, including a quiz in the testing center, but she drops the lowest scores and grades super fast. She was super nice, too.
Probably the worst professor I have had yet at USU. Going to lectures is basically pointless in this class. She has a french accent and moves very fast paste, making it very hard to understand concepts. There is a quiz every week, and at least 4 or more homework assignments due every week.
She just sped through examples to the point where i would be lost all of lecture and have to relearn it all in recitation
This class is by far the most difficult class I've ever taken. Despite my best efforts I only got a C. I spent over 4 hours a week at the AMLC plus at least another 2-3 hours teaching myself material. Her lectures are pretty useless because she goes too fast. If you can, take Calc 2 with Greg Wheeler, he is much better at actually teaching.
Annoying homework that isn't properly explained in lecture, and you grade only matters from tests, which there are 3 and worth 25% each
She will work with you and help you if you ask questions during or after class. She helped prepare me a lot for the final and was very helpful. Lectures are long but she does care about her students. Don't be afraid to develop a relationship and it will change your whole experience with her.
SO. MUCH. WORK. (6+ hrs weekly). 2-4 assignments, 2-4 worksheets, and 1 quiz every week. The lectures were not helpful whatsoever because she goes too fast to actually absorb information. Each exam is 25% of your grade so if you do badly on one then too bad for you. I don't even know what I paid for because I had to teach myself everything anyway.
I do about 10 hours of homework each week for this class. You can expect 4-6 assignments per week, and to spend lots of time in the Tutoring center. In class she talks faster than you can write down. It is extremely fast paced. Right now I have an A, but it is a very frustrating class. It is a heavy load.
Claire's a nice person but honestly a pretty mid teacher. I stopped going to lectures halfway through the semester because I wasn't learning much, and honestly, I started doing better after that. The course itself isn't terrible, though. There's a lot of homework and weekly quizzes, which are super annoying, but luckily the tests aren't too bad.
She moves pretty fast in the lectures, and she's got a French accent that can make it hard to understand her sometimes. I didn't get much out of the lectures. Calculus 2 is a difficult class, and I would not recommend you take it with Watson unless you can teach yourself. I dropped it, took it with another professor during the summer, and got an A.
