Really not a bad guy, if you can get over the 6 pages of notes that you'll take and then the "terrorist" tests that are only 10 short answer questions. So he's in his first semester at M'ville, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt... he's nervous maybe?
he talks so fast, doesnt finish his sentences, tests are impossible. tape recorders should be used because he doesnt ever focus on anything he just talks about everything and something that he mentions for a second in class will come up on a test as a major question. he's new so let's up he's learning from his mistakes.
He's a really nice guy. He will take the time to help you with anything if you need help. Yes you do take a lot of notes but this is his first semester here. He changes his teaching style to help the class if we tell him to. Overall a great professor
If you can stand all the "umm"s and "uhh"s and the disorganization of his thoughts, this is the class for you. The topic, in my opinion, is boring. The pop tests are impossible. If you know how to use shorthand the notes aren't too terrible. all in all he's new and definatly inexperienced. Really really nice guy though!
Awesome prof. He really knows his stuff and really tries hard to get the class interested. It's hard at 9 am with a room full of non-history majors. Way to go Maxwell!
What a nice guy; he'll do anything to help his students out, including extending due dates for papers. He also doesn't take attendence. He's very, very knowledgeable in his subject, but has a hard time conveying his thoughts during lectures, but if you get used to it, it's not too bad. Once again, I can't stress how nice of a guy he is!
Very nice and cute man, not hot, lol but cute in his sweater-sets and all, still getting his teaching style down, ppl are too hard on him it is his 1st semester, good guy and I believe he will get the hang of teaching in time, very helpful and sweet, and also knows what he is talking about atleast when the poor guy can get it out of his mouth...
Soooooo many notes to take. Doesn't test very often and there's only one paper to write along with a group presentation. It's not that bad but I could do without the notetaking but it's a topic that not too many students are familiar with which is why he doesn't allow many discussions to take place. He's ok, but I wouldn't take another class w/ him
Very nice guy. Can't stress that enough. BUT, disorganized notes, disorganized lectures, disorganized office, horrible transitions from class to class, lack of consistency (especially with assignments), slow at returning paper/exams. But, very intelligent, cares about the student (I think), and it is his first semester. LET US PRAY
Dr. Maxwell has tons of knowledge; almost too much. He is big on the context of events. This, coupled with his welter of facts, can cause some frantic note scribbling. He gladly encourages class participation (just have sound reasoning and facts to back up your position) and will clarify any points in question. I liked him. Others did not.
Gives TONS of notes, but if you have a computer definitely bring it to take them down. It was only his first semester so he had things to learn but he changed class to make it more reasonable for us. Only two tests and one paper which wasn't too bad and great grading scale like none other. Just participate and he'll be happy.
People need to give him a break. It's only his second semester, so he's still learning. He is probably my favorite professor because he's so intelligent and helpful. Yes, the lack of clarity is true, but he's probably just nervous. He loves discussion, and through discussion you'll understand more. Great guy, love him!
I love this guy! How can you not like him? He's very sophisticated and knowledgable in his field and he makes class interesting by creating an intelligent atmosphere; filled with humor and wisdom. You have to be INTELLIGENT to appreciate a professor like Dr. Maxwell. A class act all the way.
Dr. Maxwell is a wonderful professor. He's full of knowledge, not only about the Atlantic world, but about most other things, and is totally willing to help any one of his students with anything. He's a huge gain to Millersville and people just need to appreciate him more and cut him some slack!
Give him a break. He is a really enthusiastic prof, and he really gets into teaching with his little jokes and humor. He does give a lot of notes, but the topics in class are very interesting and it doesn't seem like there are that many notes. Of course he is not prefect, but who is? He is a little unorganized but I recommend this class.
I understand that it's his first year here, but the man is very disorganized. EVERY class is constant powerpoints with pages and pages of notes. The exams and paper were not hard, but I couldnt stand being in class to hear him never finish a coherent sentence. He always starts out with one idea and changes his mind halfway through.
This man is a complete joke when it comes to teaching. He may be very knowledgable in his field but he cannot convey his message if his life depended on it. I once counted the number of "ums" that came out of his mouth, I stopped after I hit fifty in half an hour. Not as bad as Kevorkian so take him only as the lesser of the two evils.
He should create a rock band and call it: Dr. Maxwell and the Ummmmz. He has a good sense of humor and I learned alot but jeez, could have done it without the ums. Oh and he doesn't return anything on time.
Dr. Maxwell is too smart for his own good I think because he has a hard time connecting with most students. If you do connect with him, then you will be surprised to know that he is a wonderful guy. Very nice, funny, helpful, and definitely a genius. I had a great experience, so I highly recommend him.
Dr. Maxwell is probably my favorite professor because look at the guy, he's so cute in his sweater sets and he's such a sweet man. I learned so, so much from him even though sometimes he has a hard time conveying his lectures. It's only his first year teaching, so I expect he'll get better at it. Give him a break!
I loved him! His humor is dry and very funny. You will need to study for this class though and I went just off the notes and did quite well. He does have a ton of notes so I'd recommend using a laptop or getting the notes off a friend who does type up the notes. I loved him!
I agree with the majority. Give the guy a break. His classes are informative and he is a very good prof. Have had him for three classes now and can honestly say he is one of the better profs in the History department. Take him if you get the chance
Maxwell is extremely knowledgeable, compelling to listen to, and a really nice and funny guy. Covers a lot of material in his lectures. Two book tests which are relatively easy and tutorials basically ensure that you will do fine in this class.
I thought Dr. Maxwell was a good professor. His class was pretty easy, and the tests were not very hard, even without much studying. He is willing to help students, and is a really nice guy. he is my advisor, so i have talked to him several times. he is always really helpful.
Dr maxwell is one of the nicest profs in the world the tutorial aspect of the class can be very frustrating as well as the tests he has one specific answer in mind that you have to find ... very good sense of humor i would take him again for sure
I loved having this professor. i didnt know how much I would like taking this history class, but he made it fun. The classes are usually 2 days a week, the one day is lecture and you take notes(not manadatory) and the other day you have a "jeopardy" type game(not mandatory, but should go). TAKE A CLASS IF YOU GET THE CHANCE, ITS WORTH IT!!!
LOVED THIS CLASS! his tests hard but passable, always available for questions. He cares about his students, which is a big +. He's from one of the islands in the Carribbean, so he jokingly tries to get you to visit their. He told our class the entire semester, if someone(s) were to buy him a real katana, you would get an A++ the class, no joke lol
The class was my 2nd most stressful class at MU. There are between 150-200 pages to read every week (8 books!). The last 2 hours of class are all debate groups. If you mess up, it pulls your whole group grade down. Be ready to work hard. Having said all that, Dr. Maxwell is a TERRIFIC guy. I learned a lot and am glad for it. Message me 4 more.
This is my favorite prof at Millersville. He is interesting, engaging, funny and super nice. If you can take him.. DO IT. Just take notes and you will get a B or higher.
I've had Dr. Maxwell for several classes, including Atlantic World and Senior Seminar. He is also my adviser. He is my favorite professor at MU.His classes are relatively easy as long as you take notes and do the readings. He is also one of the nicest people I've ever met. He is always willing to help students. Take him if you can.
Dr. Maxwell knows his material upsidedown and backwards. He is engaging, challenging, and generally just good at his job. His Euro history 1350-1789 was split between lecture and a discussion type thing, but neither of those were ever boring. Dr. Maxwell has a keen sense of humor and is a master of his trade. I would recommend him to anyone.
He's nice, loves his subject, and you know he tries hard. This is how all college professors should be, although most of them aren't at MU.
Let me start by saying I HATE history & think it's the most pointless subject in existance. That being said, Maxwell made me feel like a history major... I found myself wanting to study & learn more because of his tutorials & my academically competitive nature. Wonderful man.
Dr. Maxwell is a cool guy and is passionate about what he teaches. Tutorials are a little tedious and the exams can be stressful/rough, but hes an overall good guy. I would just study your notes and tutorials for the exam and know the information throughly. Also, knowing the study guide help. I wouldn't recommend if you're taking the class a G3.
Great prof. He was very easy to understand in class and very helpful but the pace was fast. I found the work load a little stressful but easy to understand and there was only a midterm, final and tutorial grades. Attendence wasn't taken but to keep up I would suggest going to class.
Maxwell is amazingly cute in an academic sense. Knows his stuff, sometimes rambles. Loves Bermuda and he is English. For history majors YOU MUST TAKE HIM!!!
Very nice guy and quite funny at times. Tutorials can get boring but they make you learn the material. Tests are hard but the class is overall isn't too bad. I would recommend taking him. He is very knowledgeable.
Although I was a bit lost at times during this course, I really enjoyed the class! The tutorials were interesting and helped me learn a lot. There were so many books to read, and it is imparitive to read all of the selections to know what's going on. The 10 page paper was intimidating, but doable. I would highly recommend him, he's a good professor
If you want an easy class load, this is not the professor to take. If you want to learn, Dr. Maxwell is your professor. I would take him again, in a heartbeat. He is funny, extremely intelligent and knowledgeable. As a professor, he shows flexibility and is very helpful.
LOVE HIM!!!!! He is such a nice and funny guy. My class has the best conversations. He is super smart and if your into history, you will love this class. However if your looking for an easy A your not going to find it here. His test are really hard and he wants every single detail you can think of. Tutorials also become a pain after awhile.
Pretty easy class. He makes it seem like it's going to be really hard, it's not. Essay question was to discuss Martin Luther. If you know remotely anything about history, you will be fine. Nice guy. Midterm & final plus grade for tutorial (attendance to that is mandatory). Not much outside of the classroom work at all.
30% of your grade is a midterm, 40% is a final, and 30% is from tutorials, where you get put into groups, each group gets a question, and then points are awarded based on how well your group answers and then adds on to other questions. If you're not already a history buff, his tests are very hard. Good luck if your group is quiet or doesn't study!
Nice guy, bad teacher. Class was way too difficult for a 100-level. He didn't seem interested in teaching, only having history conversations with people who already knew the material inside and out. Lectures are scattered, tests hard. I can't recommend Dr. Maxwell for any entry-level class.
Took this class as a G1, and...wow. The lectures are hard to follow, the tutorials are time consuming and confusing, and the study guides for the exams don't help at all. Both exams are all essay and he is a tough grader. Maxwell doesn't actually TEACH and you'll only enjoy him if you're already very knowledgable of history. Bad for a 100-level.
Not a bad guy, but if you take him for a Gen Ed, you'll regret it. Definitely avoid him if you're looking for a relatively easy class or if you're not a history buff. Class is dominated by a few talkative students, and 30% of the grade is participation. Only other grades are from 2 exams, both all essay. Overall, I don't recommend Maxwell.
Absolutely loved him. He is amazing at explaining everything. He certainly knows what he is talking about... it seems like he swallowed an encyclopedia before class.
Defintely regret taking for a GEN ED. lectures are confusing for us people who ARENT walking encyclopedias of history..
Maxwell really is a walking encyclopedia. This honors course is quite a challenge, but if you do the reading and participate in class, all should be well. Good Luck!
Maxwell is a great guy. This class is based on what he calls tutorials. He assigns reading and gives out questions for 4 groups. You have a week to do it and in class on Tuesday, your group presents and he gives points. As long as u have a good group who isn't afraid to talk, you'll do fine. He makes sure everyone passes with a B.
As for the 11 textbooks he says to buy, don't buy them! All the answers you need are online, plus everyone in your dorm will have them if you want to use them. If you want to use one of the books for the test, rent it from the library. Race Culture; Egypt, Greece, and Rome; Atlantic History; and maybe one other are the important ones.
Don't be too afraid to speak up and join in the conversations because he will add on to whatever you say and enhance your understanding of the material. Overall a difficult class but he is an awesome professor, and if you pay attention he says some pretty hilarious things.
A difficult class but a great professor!
His tests seem difficult since they're all essays but if you have all the notes from the class you should be able to answer them - just don't get off topic while writing and he really hates cliches. Don't be afraid to speak up, but even if you don't the participation also comes from group member grading. You learn just by listening to him speak.
Tips to succeed in this class: 1) DON'T READ ALL OF THE ASSIGNED READING! Use the book index, Control F, and the internet for keywords in the questions to answer them. 2) Use Google Docs to collaborate with teammates. 3) Post it notes with typed notes in your books for exams. 4) Have many quotes to support your answers. Good luck!
Here's the deal - Maxwell is a cool teacher. No doubt. For his class, you are going to need good strategy & great trust in group members. TEAMWORK is key to success - divide everything between group members and the assigned readingsdebates are not very hard. As far as grading, you will need to be CLUTCH on the midterm, research paper and final.
This was one of my most challenging classes due to the time you had to put into the readings and questions, but overall it was also my favorite class this semester. The class was pretty chill and Maxwell is hilarious. As long as you pay attention and take good notes, the midterm and final should be fine.
Thought-provoking and interesting, this class will alter your worldview. Dr. Maxwell has a discussion-based course that requires much reading and preparation beforehand. Study with your friends. Points are awarded somewhat arbitrarily, but it is easy to get the required amount. The research paper is not as bad as it seems.
I took History 401 as an elective for a perspectives course and it was one of the best decisions I've made in four years at college. Maxwell is one of the most genuine human beings at Millersville University and he really makes you interested in the subject. I came into the class with minimal knowledge of history and he really made the subject fun!
To sum it up in one short sentence, Maxwell is an angel that the earth is not worthy of.
Maxwell seems tough at first, but he's just a teddy bear and he's awesome. Very intelligent guy.
History of ideas is one of the hardest class that I've taken. It is also one of the best. Maxwell is an amazing professor and he makes the class. He is hilarious, super caring, but at the same time will push you to reach for your potential. He's amazing!
Dr. Maxwell is an excellent Professor who truly cares about his students. You will gain very important insights on a myriad of matters which truly reshapes the way in which you think. Be prepared to read.
Took Hist101 for my major thinking it was going to be a walk-in-the-park. 1/2 the class is lectures, and 1/2 is tutorials which are group discussions that are graded for 30% of your total grade. Tests are mainly essays with some short answer ?'s. Pay attention and participate or it's tough. Being prepared for tutorials wil help studying 4 test
What a cutie! I love Maxwell with every fiber of my being. He is passionate about history and I consider him to be a real life Frozone. The content can get confusing and there's a lot of reading, but he's more than willing to explain confusing concepts to you. He will also take modern phrases/references you use and run with them which I ADORE!!!
I had to take this class for the Honors College. Maxwell is a pretty nice guy but his class was kind of boring. We did these tutorials where you would answer questions from the readings as a group. It was a LOT of reading. The class was pretty easy, though. Do the tutorials and you'll do fine.
Dr. Maxwell is a sweet professor, but he expects so much out of first semester freshmen. If you're in the honors college, you'll have to take his class. One week we had to read several hundred pages for class, due the same day as our 10pg research paper. It was rough. Also, he's a little soft-spoken, so it's hard to hear him sometimes.
He's a phenomenal professor. 10/10 would recommend.
Professor Maxwell was, for me, a very polarizing professor. He clearly cares a great deal about his subject and students, but I wasnt a fan of the way he structured his class. Most class periods were given to engage in group discussions that were not moderated well. His tests are essay based and usually consist of rehashing discussions.
Maxwell is very sporadic with his lectures and soft-spoken, which doesn't bode well for a teacher. Many classes consisted of groups debates, which totaled to 20% of your grade. He would award points whenever he felt that you made a good point, and wasn't always consistent with how/when he awarded them.
He was a fantastic professor! Beware, his class is tough, but keep at it and youll be okay! He is willing to help you whenever possible.
I absolutely loved his course so much so that I added another class that he teach. Be ready to work together as class debates are very important in his class. He gives very interesting lectures and is very supportive of all students. He just really cares.
Dr. Maxwell is a solid professor overall. History of Ideas can be overwhelming at times, but splitting up work between group members can help make it more manageable. He can be a tough grader, but if you ask for help he is more than willing to point you on the right track.
A lot of the class depended on debates. If you get put with a bad group, you're pretty much stuck with assuming an unfair amount of work due to other people's laziness. Otherwise, the class was great and I learned a lot.
Dr. Maxwell is an exceptional professor. Theres crazy amounts of reading but the history you learn is incredible. He has a quiet voice and sometimes hard to hear but once he gets going into his lectures he really transports you in time. Hes also always available for office hours or just a chat.
Super sweet guy, but he is very technologically challenged (he chose to be that way). His lectures are very detailed, but listen closely he is soft spoken. The final paper you write will determine your grade, not the tutorials. Take good notes, prepare for the midterm as well as the final using your notes, and that will ensure you do well.
Truly a really nice guy but for non-history majors... you will HATE this class. It s do able though. Read some of the assigned reading, work with your group to form a plan. Ask questions and lots of them. Give good facts. Add your own perspective and support it with what you read. If you do this... "easy" A .
While a nice person, Professor Maxwell is not a great professor. Very slow at replying to emails, syllabus is vague at best and he has changed from what the syllabus has said without telling us. He is also a very tough grader, but gives very few expectations beforehand and not much feedback as well. Would not recommend.
Dr. Maxwell is a decent professor and nice person but so technologically incompetent that it interferes with class. Take good note on his lectures, but I didn't really use them much. If you need to focus notetaking, take notes on the books, it will make writing papers and tests so much easier. You also only use a chapter or two from each book.
Dr. Maxwell can be a little tough. Be prepared to read. The main thing done in his class is lectures and tutorials, which is group based. The way he gives off points in the tutorials is a little random. Just make sure to keep up with the reading and the work and you should be good! He is a great professor and very passionate about history.
Dr. Maxwell is very knowledgable about the subject matter he teaches. The set up is lecture on one day, group/class discussions on the other. He uses a variety of reading materials in the class and has graded discussions so make sure you do the reading or paid attention in the lecture. He is hard to hear so sit in the front row.
I love Dr. Maxwell! He's very funny and passionate. He speaks kind of quietly sometimes, so try to pay attention or you might miss something. His grading was kind of confusing for me at first, but if you ask him questions he'll be happy to answer them. He doesn't put anything in D2L, so make sure you keep track of your own grades.
Dr Maxwell is all over the place, we rarely talked about Europe in European history. He is very awkward and seems like he's not entirely all there. He's a nice guy, but never available outside of class and you're really only graded on midterm and final exams.
I loved Dr. Maxwell! Class was lecture and note heavy, so while you won't get graded on your attendance, you'll want to be there to avoid missing any content. Read the textbook outside of class to have extra info for exams and tutorials (group Socratic seminars). Graded on participation during tutorials, make sure you're actively participating.
Maxwell is very knowledgeable about history. He's a really good dude and cares a lot about his students. He is soft spoken which makes it hard to follow him sometimes. Grades off of midterm and final plus class discussions. His tests are hard and over half the class failed the midterm so he said the final grade would replace the midterm grade.
The books on the bookstore look daunting in #, but you don't read the entire books. Clearly outlined syllabus and sticks to the due dates. VERY understanding and will want to help you succeed but don't take that for granted. Participation is in groups. Ten page paper for freshmen is crazy but it is doable, trust me. Overall a very good professor.
Yes, this class has a LOT of required readings, and yes, there's a 10 page paper. But believe me when I say it was the most fascinating class ever and this dude is so awesome. Find something you find interesting to write about and you'll find the theme of alterity in this class makes the pages easy.
Very passionate about his work! He is very interesting to talk to in my opinion. You will read A LOT in this course but it's fairly easy to understand and present. He is fairly soft spoken so if you have hearing troubles I'd recommend sitting in one of the front rows. Class is very honors level, not impossible but challenging. Loves his subject!
Maxwell's lectures can be scattered and hard to follow sometimes, but as long as you're paying attention and taking good notes you'll be ok. Just by listening to him for a few minutes you can tell he really cares about the material and is excited for you to learn. If you're confused or behind, he's very accessible and will help you out.
Lots of lectures and intense readings, but he is more than willing to explain a topic or help you out. The tutorials are where most of your grade comes from, so be prepared and participate in those. He is very soft spoken, so sit in the front if you want to hear him.
Dr. Maxwell himself is great; he is super kind and clearly very passionate about what he teaches. The issue I have is with the class. There's a lot of reading, a midterm & final that consist of only opened ended questions, graded group debates (can't pick group members), and a huge 10-page paper. I think it's too hard for a 200-level gen-ed.
I have him for HIST105 which isn't an option under his course codes. He's alright, you can tell he's trying his best. I just wish he would talk a little louder because I can't hear a word bro says. He also seems very nervous when addressing my class.
Maxwell was a fine professor, I personally did not like the tutorials, "debates" because of the public speaking, and my class loved to argue. However he is a good grader and clearly is very passionate about what he does.
