thought that all students should know the material just because he did
Only lazy undergrads (non majors) would gripe. Liked his course very much!!!
Freshman not used to working for a grade stay away. If you really like history & want a dynamic & knowledgeable professor who doesn't lower his acacemic standards for anyone, this is the man! One of my all time favorites! NOT FOR LAZY WHINERS OR SLACKERS!
I couldn't stand him! Undergrads complain because he does feel like everyone should enjoy the class just because he does. Obviously, history majors should like him, but if you don't like history, stay away.
Horrid! Snarls his lip and thinks he's superior.
Bunch of whiners. Great teacher, emphasis on the word teacher. Holds freshman to standards, something they're not used to. Uncompromising and passionate about his subject. Take him if you love history, otherwise take someone else.
has an attitude. first day of class told the whole class that if you made a "C" in his class you were doing good. Gives the hardest multiple choice tests I have ever taken. all four answers were partially right. first 10 questions took 35 minute
I'm a CSCI major, but I loved his class. Yeah, he's not easy and he's not going to cut you any slack. That being said, don't take him if this is what you expect from your instructors. Otherwise, if you want to really learn about history, this is the man!
I have had him for 7 weeks, and while I'm doing well in his class, I find him to be very offensive, intolerant, and very arrogant. I personally believe that if one has opinions, he or she should keep those opinions until asked.
Can be a little offensive at times, but overall, this man is what every profesor should be, expecting the best out of his students. Has EXCELLENT study guides for exams. Not for those who tend to skip class or the lazy.
rude, arrogant, and downright offensive!! This type of behavior should not be tolerated in any institution. Avoid at all costs. There are better instructors that will treat you with respect.
I didn't rnjoy him at all
Quizzes come straight from the book and are very easy. The tests, however, are impossible. The tests bounce from book, to notes, to what seems Graduate level lectures. Most obscure multiple choice questions that I have ever seen.
He made us afraid to ask questions. To him, they were all stupid and so were we. I think someone needs to give him an attitude adjustment.
I thought he was great. Fascinating facts with each lecture. It is after all the little things that make the study of history so much fun.
Definitely not a teacher for the easily offended, otherwise I greatly enjoyed his lectures. Usually pretty clear, although he doesn't seem as approachable as some of the other teachers. Extremely knowledgable and entertaining to boot!
My god what a mouth, good teacher, but a little bit of a jerk, otherwise rock on dude
I find the tests to be so impossible. For the first test, I studied the notes really well, and the second, I read the book thoroughly, and got the same low grade on both!! I don't know where the questions come from, and they are so detailed. YIKES.
Lectures are long and sometimes off topic. A lot of test questions are way too detailed and most come from the book. Lecture notes will only help so much.
His tests are hard. But if you pay attention in class and take effective notes, the tests are not that bad. He will help if you make an appointment, he will also go over the tests if you make an appointment after you get it back.
He's very good in Lecture but his tests are not clear at all. He also seems to hate Technology.
the only teacher that i have not liked here
One of the worst professors i've ever had. Tried to lower the grades in his class. After tests he would laugh at how low the grades were and not take any of the responsiblity. Was on teaching probation for failing too many students. Needs to just be fired.
Attendance is optional, but if you want to pass you'd better be there every day. Quizes are all announced at least 2 classes in advance and a study guide is given for those. Tests are impossible. Prepare to study. Cocky and arrogant, have to learn to like him.
Smart, entertaining man and can honestly say that the difficulties had in the class were of my own laziness...Good for those interested in philosophy beause he likes talking about the ideas influencing a time period...Could seem like an arrogant jerk, but overall I learned a lot....
He just does not know how to teach. Very unclear!
There is no doubt in my mind that Rushing knows his stuff and knows it well. However, as a teacher he's not too successful in communicating his knowledge effectivly with his students.
Definitely not a fan of this teacher. I've never heard anything good from the people I've talked to about him. I hated his class and couldn't stand to be in there (though, yes, I did go). Tests are very hard.
Get out before its too late...
I had to drop the class.:(
DO NOT take this professor if you can help it! He dors not seem to take any joy from teaching. I did learn the material, but it was torture to do so.
An absolute disgrace to the teaching profession He simply wishes to demonstrate his superior knowledge of the subject and is totally unconcerned with instilling a desire for greater knowledge within his students

He really isn't that bad, but he doesn't follow along with the syllabus. Our class was always a week or two behind. He gives extra credit points for attendance, but no other extra credit. His tests are not that difficult if you study for them.
If all possible, do NOT take his class. You can study for weeks before the exams and then you still do horrible on them. He seems to enjoy failing students, he laughs when the class average is a failing grade. He also is not willing to help, he sends you to the TA or the online tutoring.
Most students hate Rushing. I took him for two semesters and made an A- in both semesters. Rushing is very monotone and if you don't like history, his lectures will make you sleep. If you want to work, study, and learn about history, then he is the guy to take.
Def the worst Professor I have ever had! Very monotoned but can be funny sometimes... if you can stay awake. If possible do not take his class... you can study forever and still fail, which is no fun!
Do not take Rushing.... he is a horrible professor. The first time i ever failed any history class in my life time was with him which i wound up repaying to take the class elsewhere and making a B+ which is more on my ability. He is boring and doesnt care about his students. He is a Joke and needs to be fired....
Only C in my college career. Interesting lectures but insane tests, thank god I write essays well or I would have died. Was willing to let me make up missed tests but wasn't a terribly nice man. I got the impression his job is a chore to him.
he gave us a quiz the second day
He was not that hard, His quizes were super easy, and those help your final grade a lot. the test were not so bad as long as you show up to class everyday and take good notes. He writes everything on the board so you don't even really have to listen to him put you to sleep. I took him during the Summer and finished with a B plus with little studing
Everyone seems to hate him, but I thought he was one of the best lecturers at ETSU. He was an excellent professor if you ask me. He rubs people the wrong way and he can be a real jackass to you if you don't care about the class, though.
This guy was honestly a joke. I have made straight A's, high A's, my entire life in history. I made a D+ in his class, and studied like crazy. His test were unclear, as were his lectures. He is also very vulgar in his speech. I strongly recomend no on
I actually found his lectures very interesting and his test were not that difficult if you actually studied.
He's kind of an ornery old man, but a good teacher. If you read your text and study there's no reason to fail. His lectures are interesting most of the time especially if you like history.
This class was very difficult. He's extremely boring. If hhistory bores you already...get someone else. He gives very hard tests and it seems as though every question has two answers.
He gives the facts. Some students don't seem to be able to handle that. That's their problem. He's a straight forward instructer whom I found very insightful and helpful.
If you have had him, then you know... he is an alright guy out of class, he could cut a little slack in grading though
Very difficult tests with several correct answers on some problems. I kind of had a feel for what he considered the "best" answer after a few tests. I squeaked out an A in 2 of his classes but worked very hard for them
Worst grade in ever I ever received in college. Roughly half of the class failed. Has tenure and does not care.
The class was horrible. He lectured the entire time, forced us to take notes, and then the exams had nothing to do with anything that had been talked about in class. One of my lowest grades ever.
quiz's are hard, well i think so anyway, not a bad lecturer

Best of Luck with this one. My only adivce... take notes, write down EVERYTHING he writes on the board and says. I highly recommend buying a tape recorder and taping his lecture. That way you can go back and fill in what you missed. Go to class, do NOT miss his class. Quizzes aren't THAT difficult if you studied, tests ARE hard.
Exams are very difficult and many questions are quite vague. Plans quizes at odd times.
Boring as you can get. Don't take class unless you plan on sleeping through because whether you want to or not you will end up sleeping through the class.
Worst teacher ive ever had. Only class i have ever made lower than a B in. Lectures the whole class-every class. Exams are extreamly hard and no matter how much i studied i still did poorly. he should not be teaching.
Only Class I've ever failed in my whole life!! Very hard exams, he failed 60% of my class and did not care.
Great teacher. This man knows everything about history right down to the kind of toothpaste Hitler used. The only problem is that this class is extremely difficult, if you want an easy A then stay as far away as you can. The tests are hard, but if you show up to class and stay awake then you have a chance.
Good teacher, but a snob. Not a nice man. You have to read constantly in his class and books that you cannot check out so you have to sit in the library for hours at a time. When he found out that nobody was reading the books he assigned he gave a pop quiz the following class.
good lecture class. He tells you everything that will be on the test. Tests are hard, but not if you actually crack the book/notes.
F-ING RIDICULOUS CLASS
i listened in class, read, did the study guide.. and never made above a low C on a test - ridiculous.
The best thing to do in this class is to go everyday, take very extensive notes, and do the study guides for the tests and quizzes. It is a hard class and it requires a lot of work. The worst part was that Rushing is not very friendly and does not seem to want to help anyone. oh and he asks the class questions and laughs when people are wrong!
Studied my butt off and still got a D+, The only way to make an A would be to take him in the summer as an only class.I did read the book to extensive notes and did the study guide. I would take anyone but him!
I liked him, class was hard, but I learned a lot and got my moneys worth!

Rushing is a serious teacher for the serious student. He is not going to pamper students. His expectations are very high, but why shouldn't they be? College is a place to learn; not slack off, sleep in class, or not learn. I took all four of his classes and would take more if I could. He inspired me to major in history. Excellent teacher.
I thought Rushing was a great teacher. Tells history like it really was, the good and the bad. Tests (US Hist 1 and 2) were all multiple choice. I thought they were easy, provided you payed attention, took notes and studied a little bit. If you slack off you'll get a bad grade. Don't miss class!

Unless you feel like studying history 24-7, i advise another teacher. He doesnt give great notes and is sometimes very rude to his students.
He knows his stuff...but the tests are extremely hard and if you take him make sure to take good detailed notes and start studying for the test as soon as he gives out the study guide.
DO NOT TAKE!The man is a jerk.He knows his stuff does well explaining the subject, but when it comes down to his tests,he doesnt want to know what you've learned. All he's interested in is finding out everything you didn't absorb so that he can ridicule the class the next day.Prides himself in offending others, esp on religion.TAKE A DIFF PROFESSOR!
His test are somewhat worded strangley (the answer choices) he tends to come off as arogant, and better than the students. he contridicts what the book says at times (dates, names, etc.) overall avoid this man's class!
I had to drop this class because it was so hard. Everything he goes over in lecture is a waste of time because he completely words the test to confuse people. He is very sarcastic and rude. I would do anything to avoid taking him.
Four exams were the only graded portion of this course. Attending class, taking lecture notes and working on the study guide are a must. He does not stress your memory of dates, and the majority of the test questions came from lecture notes and study guide meaterial. I really enjoyed this class, and I would take this professor again if I could.

Kind of funny, test are hard.
heres the deal-if u actually go to class and take good notes and study you will do fine. He is really hard but his tests are all on his lectures and if you follow his lectures you can do fine on the test. If you attend class he is more sympathetic to what your grade will be at the end of the semester-go to class it pays of...trust me
terrible. do no take!
He disregarded almost every question students asked.
I attended EVERY class, never slept, took tons and tons of notes and studied days before the exams and still failed so all of you that say its easy if you pay attention are VERY wrong. The entire final grade came from 3 exams. DO NOT TAKE!!!
He is soo rude, so please don't ask him any questions...oh yeah, our class average was below a 50%
He knows what he is talking about but is a really hard professor, be prepared to study hard for the tests. Dont make the mistkae i did in thinking you can wait two or three days before and do good on the test. You need to review the notes daily and the tests come from the notes, look in your notes, read the text but focues on the notes. Goto class
insults when asked a question, no help at all. Tests are incredibly hard.
This guy is a genius when it comes to history. I made an A but I went to class everyday and took notes from the minute I walked in the door until the class was over. His test are hard but passable if you study your notes as you go along. He is definitely not one of the most friendly teachers but I probably learned more from him than anyone.
Very interesting to listen to his lectures which you must do a lot of. You have to come to all classes and take plenty of notes on what he says. Don't need the book just listen to him. Multiple choice tests are challenging but not unpassable. I really liked this class but you must be prepared and study well to pass.
If you are not willing to work hard and dont enjoy history do not take this class. He knows what he is talking about. Come to all lectures and study your notes everyday. I didnt make a great grade but he is a good teacher and you have to really earn your grade.
This professor has a tendency to be very rude at the drop of a hat. He also admitted in my class that his intent was to be offensive. His lectures are fairly well organized. However, his test do not well reflect the lectures. He is terribly inept at test making.
this class was soooo tough! i studdied my butt off and still didnt do well. about 60% pass the class. and about 5% make an A. only take him if you cant fit anyone else into your schedule!
I took Prof. Rushing's U.S. History since 1877 class and I hated it for the most part. He was condescending to us from the start, and never offered any help. Some of his lectures were very interesting, as he is intelligent and knows his subject material. But for the most part I dreaded going to class.
So far, this class has been incredibly easy. There is no homework. The quizzes are announced, and are composed of five questions (to top it all off, he drops your two lowest grades.) He gives study guides for the tests, and then gives a curve on your test grade. I crammed for an hour the night before my first test, and still got an A. :)
nice guy overall but not a good teacher. Really knowns his history. He gives 5 question announced quizes which are helpful in busting your final grade and are not too bad. You have to study for his test! They are VERY wordy. Must go to class, he goes over tons of notes each meeting. I would recommend switching out if possible
He is a horrible teacher, doesn't care about the students or their learning. His test don't come from the book or from his notes, his tests are impossible
i had always heard that he was a terrible teacher, but when it comes down to it, it's what you put into it. he gives at least 2 class periods of notice before a quiz, so no pop quizzes, and study guides for tests. i would take his class again.
This man is a horrible teacher.
Horrible. Absolutely, utterly horrible. The worst prof I have had in my three years of undergrad. Exam topics are not from book. You'd best get a seat near the front, otherwise you're never going to be able to read his atrocious notes on the board. I'd have given anything to take Storie again instead.
Honestly, you're an idiot if you can't pass this course. All you need to do is read the book, show up for the quizzes, and at least listen during lecture. I didn't take a single page of lecture notes, and I got an A. He gives you study guides that basically ARE the exam, and plenty of time to prepare for an announced quiz. Sadly, He's retiring. :(
He's not as bad as everyone says. Every quiz is announced, you just have to study.. alot
Seems to think that students don't have other classes and have all the time in the world to spend on history, which sucks for us upperclassmen with "real," non-general-education courses to worry about.
I was really pleased with my grade in the class after being scared to death when I read everything on her about him. He really isn't that bad. He gives alot of quizzes but if you study you will do fine. He knows History EXTREMELY well. It wasn't that bad of a class for being history.
This is only a hard class if you make it that way. You must go to class & take notes on EVERYTHING that he says or writes down.It would be smart to sit close though. He gives quizes often, but gives a study guide for all of them. The quizes come right from the study guide. Exams and the final were easy if you study they also come with a study guide
Take notes like your life depends on it. Cause it does. Don't miss class. He likes to drone a lot. Sounds like the professor on Peanuts. It was very hard not to sleep in his class and continue to take notes even though my grade depended on it...he's ok overall
He was overall a good professor, he definitely knows his stuff. All quizzes are announced and tests are not that hard. Has a kind of cocky sounding voice, but it was amusing.
He makes the class as easy as possible to do well in. Everything is announced, and he writes tons of notes on the board. Just study and pay attention, and the class is fine.
Professor Rushing is after all a college professor,if you want to pass the class with a good grade you have to be there every class and take notes on what he says because that is your test and the notes on the board. The quizzes and test are from two different planets. There is lots of reading involved. Quizzes about every two weeks.
