extremely stressful. not happy with her
Very good teacher. Only complaint is she can be very unfair in her grading practices.
Made chemistry a scarey experience.
I got a B, but I swore I would never take chemistry again! Pretty bad when you dream about the material and failing. Clarissa is very tough and the average in her classes is a 60% Do not take a full load unless your sadistic HA HA
Clarissa teaches this course as though she is teaching to her 121-122 chem classes. She is intimidating.Needs work on social skills;NOT helpful; When you ask her if something is right, her reply is I don't know is it? After all the stress I somehow rec.
her teaching in class makes every thing seem so easy then comes her test its like night and day, first test with 50 students and the avg was a 38%
She teaches the material way too fast. and then she will say we don't have enough time to go over the material. Use caution when taking her class.
Very poor instructor. Someone needs to teach her the material before she tries to teach it to the students. She taught our class the wrong way to do several key elements during the semester. I am extremely unsatisfied with this instructor and would not recommend her. Yes, Im passing.
Excellent teacher, very willing to help when asked. Manages to keep a very dry subject interesting.
went over material at an extremely fast pace. She's a funny lady but i wouldn't take another chemistry class with her.
Wonderful Teacher, she was hard but very strong lecturer and if you put in the time and effort it definitely would pay off. Wonderful lecturer, made it interesting.
For the 1st time in my life I omprehend Chem! She makes a difficult subject clear, but you DO have to work at it. She gives many opportun-ities to bring your grade up. Notes are clear and concise. Don't take this class if you lack a sense of humor. Only complaint-sometimes over sensitive;gets defensive to innocent questions.

Clarissa kicks ass
I concur, Clarissa does kick ass.
I had serious trouble even getting a C in this class, but I heard she changed how she taught, and a friend of mine said it was a pretty easy class when he took it.
You can tell she really enjoys teaching.
Her class is not easy but she gives lots of good examples, great notes on the board and powerpoint, and her tests questions are clear. You will walk away knowing your stuff. Risa rocks!!!
She made a difficult subject as clear as anyone could. Very good lectures. Willing to give the benifit of the doubt. Willing to help out of class. Tough though... she wont put up with any crap, and you must work hard.
She's very energetic and obviously interested in what she teaches. She isn't the easiest with her quizzes and tests, but she does it mostly to prepare her students for the standard chemistry exam (which isn't easy at all). I think the fact that she doesn't try to go easy on her students shows great character in her as a teacher.
Take HER!! Probably the best chem teacher! If you go to class and take notes you will pass the class with at least a C. She explains everything very well. Her tests are not easy but also not too difficult. The only people i saw fail the class were those that did not show up! getting anything less than a C would mean u didn't show ANY effort!!!
she is an excellent teacher. take her class if possible
Awesome instructor, she made a really difficult subject easy to learn, she's really into her job, and will go the extra mile for her students. If you want to learn about chemistry and have fun doing it, take her. You wont regret it
Knowledgeable teacher but be prepared to ASK QUESTIONS if you don't understand something. She moves quickly and if Chem is not your thing or you haven't taken it in awhile you will need to ask questions and create a study group or see a tutor.
"Rissa" like to stroke her own ego; "Look how easy this is on the blackboard" with very poor instruction. Averages on her exams are about 45%. I gave up after exam 2 and concentrated on Cal. She doesn't have any business teaching because she's too busy weeding out people. Run.
SHE IS THE BEST TEACHER!!! TAKE HER I CAN'T IMAGINE A BETTER INSTRUCTOR SHE IS VERY EASY TO FOLLOW AND MAKE THE CLASS FUN BEST THING TO DO IS STUDY PREVIOUS EXAMS!
worst teacher at CNM. lecture doesnt translate to tests
Prof is extremely energetic and very thorough. She breaks concepts down into easily understood steps. Her enthusiasm shows how much she enjoys teaching and is very contagious!
I have mixed feelings about this teacher. On the one hand she is extremely helpful, patient and funny BUT, her test are very tricky. She does have some ego issues and I believe that somehow she takes pleasure in how many people drop and how many people fail her tests. If so many students are studying and trying so hard why most fail? hummm....
She goes really fast. Her quizzes and test are hard. I felt like I was totally lost in her class, but somehow I had a high B. This class is challenging. Her help sessions are helpful. She's kind of funny, but at times she thinks she's funnier than she really is. I hated the class and don't see myself taking another chemistry class with her.
She does know her Chem but has a terrible ego trip guiding her. She is rude, embarrasses people in front of others and repeatedly downgrades people in front of others. She's fast and at times doesn't even show up for her study sessions. Has a knack for losing tests and if you ask for a one on one, she tells you to see special services. just RUDE
I learned a lot from her, she made the subject easier to learn. Very humorous, so it makes the class not so boring.I would def recommend her!
Love her! Yes, her class is not the easiest, but she will do everything she can to help you. Clarissa has a great sense of humor. I enjoy her class.
She really spells things out and makes info simple and clear. Expresses her thoughts in an organized way and writes them out for us visual learners.HOWEVER,her tests are very hard and almost all problems involve math. If you put in the work, you'll do fine. Can't be afraid to ask questions even though she acts perturbed sometimes when you do.
Clarissa is a very good professor. She is very detailed and organized in her notes and knows her stuff. She can be a little condesending when asked questions but if you are mature enough not to let it bother you then you'll enjoy her class. Dont be afraid to ask questions and don't miss class if you want a good grade.
She will bend over backward to help anyone at anytime, her class is hard and you will work for your grade, but she is extremely fair. She teaches this boring science in a fun and energetic way, so the material is actually fun to learn. She inspires people to do their best.
I found this teacher to be unresponsive and checked out. She did a poor job of communicating information and seemed unconcerned about teaching. I did fine in her class, but I had to look elsewhere to learn about the material.
I find it hard to believe that Clarissa got so many positive reviews. The students in our class didn't like her or her teaching style. Her exams were HARD, because she never prepared so the class average was around 45%. To me, a 30-pt curve means the prof is either unfair or very bad at their job. Take someone else if you can.
The worst. Mean and arrogant and loves to make people feel stupid when they ask a question in class. Dr. Wallace teaches the same class, and he's better. Take him.
Watch out! She lies about what material she puts on exams and it has a lot of stuff that she doesn't go over in class. Her exams are awful. And she has this superior attitude like "Ha! I outsmarted my students." She made my semester miserable, and I will hate her and chemistry forever.
** SAVE YOUR MONEY ** She is lazy, does not teach at all and gets mad if ask questions. Horrible teacher.
I'm taking her class this semester and decided to drop it and take someone else later. She is one of weirdest teachers I've ever had. At first, I liked her, but her exams are not fair. It's like she wants to prove she's a hard teacher. Chemistry is hard enough without a teacher that who is trying to make it harder.
Her exams are DEFINITELY HARD! If you want to do well, the only thing that will save you is reading everything in the textbook. She doesn't cover everything in her exams and expects you to know more than she teaches. She will help you if you ask, but you have to know specifically what you are talking about or you will not understand at all.
Clarissa is an AWESOME teacher! Those who say she is horrible just probably didn't study enough. She gives examples then has u work on them in class with other ppl so ucan uderstand it. She had study sessions,go to them I was pregnant and made it to every one. I got an A and she lets u have cheat sheets for tests!! c'mon!
I studied all the time, but it didn't help much. She covers the matterial too fast. She made me feel stupid for asking questions. She has no mercy, it matters nothing to her if you pass. If you get into her class, transfer! The average test scores for her class were 55-65 sometimes low 70s with a curb. She's not in it for anything but herself.
Worst. Teacher. Ever.
Took Sorenson for both Chem 1510 and 1610. Be warned-her tests are very difficult. She is an excellent instructor and really knows how to teach Chem at this level. She is approachable and willing to help. She is airheaded and is relatively disorganized, but overall a great Chemistry instructor! Would certainly take her again!
She is a lecturer and not a teacher. She expects you to understand concepts too quickly and is very condescending in a passive-aggressive manner to those don't catch on right away (take it from someone with a psychology degree!) Get your info straight before you ask any questions or you will be further degenerated! Not very helpful in class!
All of the students who come prepared and do work outside of class to keep up seem to think she's a great teacher. If you can't handle the heat, don't take the class. If you feel like working hard and really learning chemistry, this is the right teacher for you.
Her tests are very hard, and she is not a good enough teacher. I dropped her class.
She expects that you have read the material prior to class. Hmmm. Imagine that. Has a good sense of humor. Wants to see you succeed and willing to help. Could use a little more practice problems in class but overall a good instructor. Is straight from the getgo about how much time will need to be put into studying outside of class, 18 hours a week.
She is a good teacher and will help you if your willing to ask. Just don't ask silly questions and you'll be fine. Humor is awesome and she is really smart!
She is hilarious in class and does video lectures which can be watched at anytime. Very excellent teacher
"Rissa" is nothing more than a lazy, insecure individual who thrives on failing students. In my class she actually told us a 75% class average on a test was "too high for her!!!" She wants to see you fail. That way, she can go home at night thinking that she is better than you. If you are not a chemistry genius, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
I had a great experience with this teacher. She really knows what she's doing and is willing to help outside of class. She sets up tutor sessions on thursday. She rarely used the textbook and on exam 2, 3, and the final we were allowed an 8" x 11" note paper. That was REALLY helpful. Be prepared for a challenging course!
A great teacher that is willing to put in the effort if you are. Great sense of humor, but beware ignorant questions-wasting class time will lead to an abrupt end to babble. Homework is not strictly assigned, but it is likely that you'll be working practice questions 12-18 hours per week if you want pass. You get the grade you earn.
I would not recommend taking Clarissa for chemistry. She is beyond hard, unless chemistry is your trade...do not take it with her. Any time I had a question she seemed bothered if I did not catch the information right away. I was intimated by her and avoided asking any quest. outside of class or while in it. She's way to fast and way to sarcastic.
A great teacher!! She is willing to go the extra mile- provided you are too. She expects a lot from her students, don't be lazy. Don't study? Don't expect her to be sympathetic and give you an A or a B just because you show up to class. Her tests are hard and the average is low, but the grades are reflective of the effort you put into class.
hybrid course: covers material quickly, must stay on top of homework. makes herself very available with office hours, allows you to sit in her other classes to get stuff twice if you want. knowledgeable, interesting style of presenting work. not easiest, but fun if you are into chemistry at all.
Rissa is an amazing teacher if you catch on quickly and are willing to ask questions without being intimidated. She will go out of her way to help a student if you take initiative to ask. I've taken her for 1410 and 1710 and will be taking her for 1810. I would definitely recommend her if you are willing to work for your grade.
Organic I was fun but quite challenging. I felt like I learned something new and valuable from each of Clarissa's lectures. She swears a lot, and so will you after every exam. Go to the help sessions and study as much as humanly possible if you want an A.
Took this class as distance learning (DL). Seems disorganized - which is not good for DL classes. Doesn't get all course content available via Blackboard even three days before a test. Gives extremely short test times (80 mintes) for exams.
In the lecture class that I signed up for, we were expected to watch her online videos to gather information. We were told by Clarissa that lecturing was a "waste of her time." All we did in class was random problems, some of which she did WRONG on the board. There was no direction on what to study, and we were not prepared for her tests.
Maybe this is a new thing this semester for this professor, but she doesn't seem to have her act together this spring. I signed up for her because of the positive reviews here. Hard doesn't bother me. But this semester she seems very defensive with regard to any issue that comes up. Maybe she's getting shell-shocked by dealing with students.
If you like a hard teacher who doesn't like to help her students, is sarcastic all the time, and presents herself as if she's super ecstatic that she's better then you in Chem, and just comes of as arrogant then this is your lucky teacher! Every single test had stuff on it that she did NOT teach. I kid you not, I'm a 4.0 student, just a warning.
Haha, if your already in her class, have fun!
easy class if you do the homework and watch videos. DL class is easy, just 3 take home quizzes and 3 tests are graded, not including the exam. The class is really straight forward if you realize this is college, not high school. The prof. isnt going to tend to your every need. loved this class and learned a lot... with a LOT of hard work.
Sometimes I think this teacher posts the few good reviews herself.
In class instruction is non-existent, not an instructor to use if you plan on pursuing a degree in science. Poor level of instructing the underlying principles of chemistry. Class performance is purely driven by the slop factor in the huge curves she applies, which should tell you how poor a teacher she is.
Very hard teacher. She is all over the place, late for class, and gives explanations that are impossible to understand. No one would have passed her class if it wasn't for all the extreme curves she had to give. HIGHLY recommend not taking this class.
This semester has been a nightmare with this instructor. I am taking the class online. She does not follow the syllabus, she hides assignments, she disappears online for long periods of time, she doesn't grade things in a timely manner, etc. This class is a disorganized mess, and I would highly not recommend her.
Instructor is terrible. Doesn't give homework so you can understand instead gives practice tests and the exams have too many question and not enough time. She does give an ok curve and drops the lowest exam score, still isn't good when you are almost failing every exam.
Horrible teacher. I understood the material she was teaching but her tests were so off her lecture. Studying won't help you. She isn't the best teacher. Take Maria Fatima de Leon for chemistry.
Worst instructor EVER!
Relies almost entirely on her videos online which poses a problem if you are not in her hybrid or online class and prefer a teacher who lectures clearly. See her in her office hours on a regular basis to get help on everything if you want/need to pass.
Clarissa is very nice but is extremely scattered and doesn't remember a thing she promises. Tests are faulty, with the average in 50's & 60's, so she uses an extreme curve. I will not take a class with this teacher again.
It is good to have many resources when they are organized and cooperative. Stuff is all over. In the videos instructor uses a party language and tone. This is science, not dudes-and-chicks gathering. Oversimplification sometime causes sidetracking. When you come back from sidetrack, she is already on something else. underestim. students' mentality.
First of all, since when did having a professor become mandatory? When is the student finally responsible for what he/she learns? I find her class wonderful. The world is your oyster on what YOU want to learn. If you go to her office hours, you'll find that there's a lot of info waiting for you. She provides the tools- you pick them up. Learn.
I'm taking Clarissa this semester..and it's been a nightmare. Attendance is not mandatory however in-class instruction is useless even when you are there everyday. Her take-home quizzes are ridiculously hard and very time consuming and on top of that she expects you to go home and watch her day's worth of online lectures. yeah right...BEWARE
General Chemistry is hard, and this instructor does the best she can. She is a good instrucor and I hope that I am prepared to take the next class. Her take home test will boggle your mind, it is so hard! But I enjoyed the challenge.
Clarissa is perhaps the worst professor I have ever encountered in my many years of college education (took college courses while in high school). She is flippant, unprepared, and unprofessional. She uses inappropriate language, does not test according to material "taught" if you can call it that, and likes to stump students with inane questions.
I took class a couple of semesters ago & it was the worst class I've had in over 10yrs.!
She doesn't seem to want to be there to teach. All real lectures are online. And they leave a lot of critical info out. Actual class time is a joke. If you are a serious student expect to learning in tutoring by taking old tests there with you. I'm a A+ student and I have never had so much trouble in a class.
I LOVE chemistry, and I was so excited to take this class. I had heard bad things about Clarissa but decided to give her a try. Her tests are RIDUCLOUSLY HARD and the questions are 10 times harder than the examples in class/on videos lectures. I would not take her in class because she just tells you to watch the videos. I dont recommend her!
only reason i passed is because i watched her online lectures and read the book many times. whenever i asked questions in class she almost always told me that the answers were in the book, when i pressed her for further understanding she always explained it to me in a very negative and demeaning manor. do not take if your are not good at chemistry
This teacher was almost useless. Her online lectures were her only form of teaching. She was not aprochable and would make rude comments in class. She seemed to think that everyone should already knows what she did.
She is the worst teacher I have had so far. She does not prepare for the finals or test, she is sick a lot and during her lessons not cooperative at all. Don't take her class!!!!!!
I'll agree that her tests are hard. Her examples on the take home quizes only give the idea about what she is going to ask on the exam. But, is nothing like the questions on the tests. You have to know every detail about the topic and be good in algebra in order to solve the problems. She's not so bad. If you make it out alive you will be good.
Clarissa is very knowledgeable in the field of chemistry. Her exams are very hard because they are math based. The truth is that science is math based so it is to be expected. I earned a B in her class and let me tell you it was hard earned. But in the end I learned chemistry instead of just rehearsing terms or flash cards.
Took her hybrid course. Found the online lectures to be very good, but in-class time was wasted passing out papers or with class cancelled by the instructor. The tests are very hard, but not unfair if you have understood the homework and practice tests/quizzes. She also curved scores and provided extra credit opportunities.
no good
Clarissa has a bad attitude. Her tests are ridiculously hard and there is little other than bookwork to prepare you. The book problems are much easier than hers though. She had due dates from July online during the Fall semester and never returned quizzes (with grades.) Avoid Clariss Sorensen-Unruh if you can!
Very clear and easy to understand. Very Fair. Hard multi-step tests with a strong emphasis on the math. But if you come prepared you can do well. Also I did much better in the lab than other students with easier lecture teachers, so sometimes thorough is better, even if she is challenging.
She definitely knows Chemistry but I don't think she's a great teacher. Tests are extremely difficult and the practice tests and homework will not prepare you. I didn't feel prepared for the standardized final at all. I always felt behind in lab and I actually did the optional homework for lecture class. I wouldn't suggest this instructor.
Awful. Completely awful.
Very hard, but incredibly thorough. Hands down the best chemistry professor at CNM. I learned more in her class than any class i've ever had. She is wonderful. Always pleasant, always approachable and available. If you put in the time and effort you not only gain an A, but you understand the material at an A level.
Very clear teaching. She is fair but her tests are hard. If you work hard in this class you will do well. She is very good at teaching the math. Her lecture videos are very clear.
She is horrible, not willing to help at all! Lazy and makes you watch online lectures instead of explaining it herself. "she Prides herself on hard tests" is what she says on first day! Lazy and not helpful...Avoid if possible!
Professor Sorenson is absolutely one of the best in her own field. Her exams might be hard, but they prepare you for the final, she gives curves, and always ready to help you. There are many scary rumors about her but not true. Her video lectures are fantastic; she loves chemistry and does care about her students.
Lazy and unwilling to take any time to help students outside of class. Takes weeks to grade scan tron tests. Entire in class lecture is directly from the textbook with actual pictures from the text. Condescending during lectures and repetative. Not worth attending lectures, but in class questions are for a grade.
I took her online, she wasn't very good at getting back. She also took a long to time to post grades. If you want to see your graded exams, it's hard to get them. Sometimes she puts questions on tests on material that she didn't cover in the lectures. She's OK.
Terrible teacher. She expects you to already know everything and does not teach you anything!
You either love her or hate her. I personally like her she is a great teacher. I will not tell you her test are not hard because they are, but she teaches great makes it easy to understand.
After taking online classes for 10 yrs, this has been the worst experience I have ever had with an online course. After the 1st week all of the sudden the communication stops. Grades are not updated, so when is time drop a course, you don't have an idea of your grades. Muddy points, are useless because she never gives feedback.
She makes some lectures interesting and can be helpful, but her downside is her follow through outside of lectures. On a couple of test reviews she even messed up the answers on the answer keys. She even graded the very first test version cc wrong because she was using the different version that she had to grade it. Overall, I wouldn't recommendher
Horrible teacher. Her ability to actually help students understand the material is not great, but it could still be competent if she didn't write tests that were harder then anything she reviewed in class or gave as study material, not to mention the few questions thrown in trying to trick students. Doesn't seem to care about student's success
I have taken her online and hybrid. She has you do as much online work in the hybrid as the online class. Tests are harder than the examples she gives in lecture. Doesn't really get back to you. I don't really recommend her.
Hybrid class. Taught you nothing. Come to class prepared, work in groups. Gets along great with the kids who know everything already.
I learned more from the Chem SI than Clarissa. Expects you to see her videos, but too hard to get through them all AND get the online homework done(the program Mastering Chemistry, which is very picky & difficult to use). She told me to put her class as priority;I put HUGE effort into the class & still did poorly. Difficult tests & no help in class.
This was a hybrid course and I did have to work hard, probably 10-12 hours a week, but I stayed on top of everything and did well. Most of my learning came through the book. I found the strategy of reading the chapter once, doing mastering chemistry, re-reading the chapters and redoing mastering chemistry problems worked best for me.
very difficult class, and she didn't make it any easier. Hardly shows up, and doesn't lecture well when she does show up. Only reason I passed was because I had a great lab teacher
The tests were very hard and there was never enough time to finish or check answers. I got over 100 in mastering chemistry and the homework but the tests were very hard and had questions that were harder than the homework. The lectures were easy to understand but never went in depth enough on each topic, and therefore did not prepare me very well.
This teacher puts up a whole bunch of lectures online and when we saw her once a week, she would give us more lectures instead of helping us to understand what we don't. If you want a barely pass class, take her. She boosts every body's grade and blames her grading on the students who aren't going to pass and her lectures suck! Don't take her.
She is not helpful when it comes to examples. Words things unclear and expects you to know what you read. Not a professor to take for chemistry 121.
This professor does not explain anything and expects you to know it. The only thing she says is "plug and chug." During the lectures, all she does is easy examples. She never goes over how she gets the answers. Her test are very difficult.
She is awful!!! AVIOD her a all costs or you will regret it! She is unhelpful and doesn't explain anything!
I loved this class. For those who say you're supposed to kniw it, that's the point of the format of the class! You do all the studying beforehand and then do problems and ask questions in class. Clarissa gives good representative practice exams and really prepares you.
horrible experience for me personally. I was already intimidated going into the class because of the difficulty of the subject. She was always rushing through the material, never explained anything thoroughly and never updated grades. I never knew where i stood in the class and was always stressed. mastering chem was pointless and time consuming
Clarissa explained everything very well it helped me understand a lot because my lecture teacher wasn't very clear in her lectures. Watch her videos!!! They are VERY helpful!!!
The worst teacher. Learned nothing in her class. I had to learn everything through a tutor.
She is good at chemistry but is a terrible teacher. My class with her is not an online class however we are still expected to do course work online. She doesn't teach she expects you to self teach. She has videos to watch online but again I DID NOT SIGN UP for a online or hybrid class.. EXTREMLY FRAUSTATING!!! I'm going to learn nothing.
For any class with Clarissa, you have to be EXTREMELY dedicated to learn the info from the book. For other classes she has online lectures that are helpful, but not this one. Halfway into the term and I still don't know what she expects us to know. VERY unorganized. She says she's going to do something and won't; week after week.
I'm not sure why she is teaching. Clarissa seems to hate lecturing and is hostile to questions and overall student interaction. She seems to be phoning in the bare minimum to get through the day, referencing dated video lectures that have such a massive disconnect from the homework that is it laughable. 100% independent study required.
Clarissa was very willing to help during office hours. It did take a little getting used to what was required in her class. I liked that the lectures were available to watch at home, and I could watch them repeatedly.
Clarissa was a great instructor! She did rely on the students doing work outside the classroom such as reading the textbook or mastering chemistry; however, that is what is required in college. The readings were short and her clicker questions helped to teach the material which helped with the labs. Overall, I learned quite a bit of material.
I thought she was a bit intimidating at first, however in the end i totally admired her. She is fair and you better read your assignments thoroughly before lab. Write down everything she puts on the board and watch her videos on bB. Her final review is excellent. Do the work and you will end the class knowing you learned alot. Excellent!
Going to office hours, studying with fellow students and spending hours doing problems is how you pass Organic Chemistry. Clarissa does expect students to have already covered the material at home. Class time is used for clarification and questions. It was a little disconcerting to not have a traditional lecture.
Clarissa is a great instructor! She isn't going to give you a grade, you will work for it, but she really knows her stuff. I would definitely take her lab again.
I took her hybrid class and relied mostly on the book for the material, however, her lecture videos were very on point with the book and she explicitly states the should only be used as a reference for clarity and such. She expects you to be prepared for class, but is happy to clarify anything you are confused about will take the time to explain.
I took her hybrid class and what I liked about it is that she provides so many resources to learn from that no matter what your learning style is, there is something for you. I liked her video lectures because they gave you a good idea of what to expect to be tested on, and the book was mostly just for reference is you needed to clarify something.
She didn't like to give lecture and she believed this method of teaching was "experimental." Although I liked her video lectures and thought she would be a great teacher if she lectured like that in class, she wasn't very helpful. Probably because she was too busy with her 8 other classes and a PhD degree. In case you wonder.
Even though you may sign up for a lecture, you will not get one. Any class is a completely self teach class. No lecture is prepared, so you're expected to know all the material. Be prepared to be bombarded with assignments with impossible deadlines. The class is very unorganized! Complete waste of time.
The most irresponsible teacher i have ever come across. Promised to update grades before final drop day and did no such thing. Also, the tests would cover material that wasn't reviewed in the outdated video lectures or in the joke of a class that was held once a week. Do yourself a favor take another professor.
Clarissa is an absolutely wonderful professor. She expects you to do the work but loves to help students along the way. She went above and beyond for me in so many ways. Best teacher and friend Ive come across at UNM and now CNM. Get to know her! She's worth talking to :)
This was a great course. I took the Hybrid course the lectures were clear and helpful. Also, having a study group before and after class helped me understand the material. I suggest working on the material and go into the lecture ready to ask questions.
Does not teach. Unclear expectations. Tough tests.
Absolutely terrible teacher, and absolutely terrible class. There were 5 different platforms that you have to check every day to make sure you aren't missing random homework from one (Mastering Chemistry, Email, MyCNM, PiApp, and Learning Catalytics) and the dates for the tests/assignments due are completely scattered.
Be prepared for a REAL college course and to put in extra time studying, implementing, & retaining knowledge out of class. Clarissa is totally in love with Chemistry, and breaks things down in easier terms. She offers a plethora of study sheets, lecture videos, a personal youtube channel, handouts, etc. for you to work with. Highly recommend!
worst class ever, she doesn't teach at all. i signed up for a face to face class but got a 85% online class. she never teaches in class and expects you to know everything. hard tests, expect 6 hour homework online with no help on her side. you might as well not go to her class and spend your time learning this from tutors and books.
The video lectures were very straight forward. They may not have always matched up with what was expected in mastering chemistry, however you got to use the hints option in the homework that gave you extra credit. You do have to work on multiple sites but it was just a matter of time management. Her test are tricky, but you get a note card.
Clarissa's class is tough. If you are going to take it online I suggest using her SI. Watch the online videos and do the practice exams to prep you for the exams. Study hard.
I took Clarissa for the General Chemistry 1 Lab and I thought she was a great instructor. She helped us with any questions we had and always explained in detail what our lab for the day consisted of. I didn't take her for the lecture, which I hear is very hard, but I definitely recommend her for the lab!
Clarissa knows her subject and has great videos to help you understand the material. Clarissa could be a great professor, if she cared more about her students than the subject. She has a 5 minute late rule. Kicks you out of class. But its okay if she is late. If you d not need any help from your professor, she may be a good choice for you
Homework was assigned across 3 platforms which was hard to coordinate, grading in blackboard is a mess and you have to email the prof or calculate it yourself, there are 4 open ended essays, 5 hard exams. Competent teacher, requirements are clear, offers lots of resources. Just be prepared to teach yourself with these resources.
A teacher that takes pleasure in making her tests as difficult as humanly possible just to feel important. Just my opinion. Steer clear of this class. The online lectures are unnerving and annoying. If you like listening to pretentious lecturing than you will do fine. For me it was like listening to fingernails across a car hood.
The WORST teacher ever!!!! she did maybe one or two lectures in a face to face class! she expects you to teach yourself from her outdated video lectures from 10 years ago... that are not even on the current book! her test are very difficult and she does not go over concepts with students, she will only give you equations. dont take her!
Overall, I was okay with her as an instructor. Class was online and pre-recorded lectures were good. However, she was nearly impossible to get in contact with if you can't get to office hours. She warned she is bad at responding to email at the beginning of class, but to me that doesn't excuse it, especially for an online class.
Her online lectures are ok and provide examples to apply the content. However, I had big concerns about communication with her since i needed to rely on email because of my distance learning status. I found that she did not reliably or consistently adhere to the syllabus policy of responding within 72 hrs which was a deal breaker for me.
Hate this class! She makes her exams as hard as she can. She gives you a practice exam before each exam but its not like the actual exam! She does trick questions! And since her exams are so hard you never have time to finish them! Dont take her! Its supposed to be a FtoF lecture but we dont even lecture we have to watch videos on our own time.
She expects us to teach ourselves outside of class by watching videos and reading, and during "lecture" we sit there and do homework. She never told us what topics we needed to know for exams, she made us study certain chapters when they were not on exams. She never lectured and expected us to know everything.
Put in little effort. Videos are out of date and not consistent with her tests. Hard to approach and would belittle you if you had questions. Returned work extremely late and had no idea how I was doing. If you have a chance, take it with any other instructor.
She was honestly so funny and very down to earth. Her lectures were very informative and she actually takes the time to make sure everyone understands material. Literally only reason I passed Chem was because she was willing to help me understand the material.
This teacher hardly ever answers emails and when she does she only answers parts of them. The homework doesn't help at all with the exams. Which she told us after the second exam. Makes you submit work on random sites without clear criteria on the assignments that are supposed to be submitted. The only good thing about this class was the ungrading.
Nice as a person but if you take class with her, be ready to teach yourself chemistry. She does not lecture over the material as a matter of routine. Be prepared to spend hours in the tutoring center or watching Khan Academy. The exams are extremely difficult and not at all what's on the reviews. "Flipped classrooms" are a waste of $$.
Shes nice, but on her own terms. Seems to get bothered when asked for help. I do not recommend her if chemistry isnt your strong point. She expects people to remember everything and barely goes over anything. Save your money and time, dont take this class.
Word of advise my friends! Complete your homework before you complete your exams. Homework is due at the end of week but her exams are due mid week. Well guess what? That content you learned in the homework, was content on your exam which could set you up for failure. Big Time. I would not recommend this professor unless you're a math genius.
I do agree. Don't take this course with this professor if you're looking for an easy A. Her course is more difficult because she teaches it as a Distance Learning course with required class attendance for further explanation and work. She also tests for understanding rather than knowledge. However, if understanding is your goal, you will get it.
She was a very good lab professor. She focused more on your understanding of how to do things, and only marked you off for messing up if you didn't understand why you did. The work load was reasonable, and her explanations in lab helped supplement the lecture course.
Her lecture videos are from 2010, the quality of lecture has not improved. You will need to watch youtube lectures to teach yourself. On the exam, you will see things you never have been taught. In short, terrible.
Mrs. Sorensen used the Pandemic as her personal vacation. Instead of helping students in a completely online environment, she sends the same email to everyone inquiring about the same question, does not email back in an adequate time span, and does not care if you pass or fail, only if your work is turned in on time.
Coming into this semester I wasnt sure what to expect because everything was online. This professor offered no help and at the end of the semester didnt mention a specific assignment or how to get to it. During this semester I had to pay for a tutor because my questions were unanswered. Also she pretty much gave up on me and left me to struggle.
THE hardest professor I have ever had. I already have a bachelors, but was taking Organic Chemistry as a requirement for a future doctorate program. For this entire semester, she has never once given us a grade for any of our assignments or exams. No feedback. Even after sending multiple emails, I never received a response from her. Don't recommend
If you're not looking to write multi-page narrative essays, don't join her class. She's disorganized and the assignments are confusing. For example, there was an Exam 2 and a final exam due in the same week, both of which had hefty writing portions. She ought to become an English teacher if she likes grading essays so much.
Great Professor, she really cares about students. She is very easy to reach with questions and gives great explanations.
I knew no chemistry going into this course and I did well and learned a lot. Their lectures were interesting and informative. You do need to study for the exams and the homework assignments are long. They offered extra credit, allowed notes for the exams, and offered a lot of resources. There isn't feedback on the exams and the grading was slow.
Most disorganized instructor ever. She has so much going on. She makes absolutely no sense. She constantly goes back on her word, she'll say something like on Slack that there are no restrictions as to what we can talk about, then a second later list all the restrictions. She is straight up a Karen. There is a schedule within the schedule.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!! She is terrible at communicating and gives out A LOT of papers for you to write.
Not too bad. Would have preferred to take this class in person, wouldn't do it again online. For her part, she was very reasonable with grading on exams. Expect short exams with problems that go over the material in depth. If you do the homework and put in the effort, you will pass.
Rissa is really great and friendly. Her lecture videos are great and have all you need to know. Sadly, 5 mandatory learning journals.. such a drag. Not horrid, but they don't help learning. I'd rather be studying. Thankfully she's lax about them.. and also with the rest of grading and deadlines. Great if you're ahead, bad if you struggle with chem
Clarissa is an incredible professor, her "un-grading" method is so forward-thinking and gives you every chance to succeed. She grades based off of your learning process, rather than focusing only on you getting the exact, 100% correct answer. The way the class is set up can be confusing, so pay attention! The Game Plan sheet is your best friend.
I would consider this a good instructor if it were not for all the writing assignments she assigns that don't help much with learning chemistry, detracting from the learning experience. Beyond that, everything else is as you'd expect. I would just prefer to focus on learning chemistry and not on the busy work she assigns in tandem.
One of the best professors I have had. She does require you to write reflections which is not a bad thing. They are a grade booster and you get to explain to her why you deserve the grade you want. She is easy to talk to and really cares about her students doing well in her class. I plan to take her for gen chem II and I am excited!
Clarissa is amazing!
