I took her at her old university and when I heard she was hired at long beach I had to let everyone know she is a great instructor.
Really tough grader and lots of busy work in class and at home. She had to curve the test grades because the average raw score was a low C. She takes role everyday. She was constantly changing her methods throughout the semester so it may take time for her to develop a GOOD teaching style. Hopefully she gets it together by Spring 2015.
This is an interesting class, but you definitely need to work hard to do well. She gives a lot of assignments, and her tests have quite a few short answers so you definitely need to study a lot for her exams. The second exam I did great on, but be ready to work hard. Make sure to buy the book and attendance is crucial. Good luck!
Be ready to read and know your stuff. Literally. I had to read each chapter and know the materials in detail in order to get a good grade on my quizzes. Overall she's a good teacher, just has high expectations.
The course was made very interesting by Dr. C. She was new to our campus and although the semester started out tough, we all got the hang of her and ended up enjoying the course. Group work is a huge part of the course, pick wisely. Participation is a must and you do need to go to every class, but if that is doable then a good grade is possible.
I NEVER RATE TEACHERS AND FOR THIS PROFESSOR, I WOULD REMOVE THE "PRO".. STAY FAR AWAY. ATTENDANCE, GROUP PROJECT, AND PETTY POINTS ARE APART OF YOUR GRADE. GRADING STYLE IS VERY UNCLEAR AND SHE TRIES TO BE HARD & DISCIPLINED BUT IT IS NON EFFECTIVE BECAUSE SHE IS ALL OVER THE PLACE. WOULD NEVER EVER TAKE AGAIN. NEEDS MORE TRAINING.
Dr. C is probably one of the most intelligent professors in the Comm Dept. That being said, be prepared to work hard. She's a tough grader, there's a pop quiz everyday and shes strict on attendance. Also, you will be randomly called on to participate. My advice if you do take her, is to read the chapters more than once and come to class every day.
I regret taking this course with this instructor. I loved the material, but simply could not handle her confusing, often inconsistent, teaching style. Class is difficult to do well in. Her grading criteria is difficult to follow at times. Wait for a different instructor to teach you this course. It's worth waiting.
She started off the semester very tough and strait forward with her expectations. participation is a must, so do not skip this class, but she was overall a good teacher. Her exams were exactly as her study guide suggests and her homework was consistent. She never surprised you with new material, you always new what was expected.
Dr. C really pushes you for that A or B. Don't procrastinate & BE SPECIFIC on everything you write! she will take off points. tests are decent as long as you actually study & attend her final review days (very helpful). don't expect an easy A or even an easy B
A difficult class to begin with and she makes it harder. Never a moment of non-engagement in class. You are called upon for feedback. Uses lots of teaching techniques though which is a lot of work on her part. You will get a B if you do everything required and I mean everything. Lots of writing and it is endless.
A lot of people score her low because she is hard. She really is a great teacher, but the nature of the classes she teaches makes it difficult for some people to understand or do well. SHe is a tough grader but really wants her students to do well.
Dr. RDC honestly is amazing! This class is not easy, it isn't meant to be easy. You are going to work hard for your grade. Quizzes every class meeting. Mid term, Final and 15 page paper. Work hard, study, read and you will get the grade you deserve. Read every chapter, do your work, pay attention. Not an easy class but she makes is super fun!
Dr. C is a great teacher. She will warm up to you. I suggest reading every chapter and making outlines. This class is a challenge, do every E.C, study hard for the tests, and find a good paper partner. She is a nice teacher but she actually knows her stuff, so don't expect to show up and pass. participation!!!! pick a good partner for the paper!
Professor C was a GREAT teacher, and is a great person. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of work and a lot of reading, and she WILL call you out if you don't do your work. This class turned out to be one of my favorite classes and kept me on my toes. A lot of interesting information and good class lectures! Not an easy A though, you're gonna work
Was excited to take class but was disappointed with teacher. Class requires a lot of reading & writing. Make SURE you read! Be specific, although she isn't. Lectures are long & unorganized. She talks a lot about herself, which was irrelevant to the class. Debated in groups last 1+ month of class. Biggest waste of your time! Take with someone else.
Very inconsistent teacher. Over the top strict & has no empathy for students. If you become ill/ something happens to you, you cannot make up for points lost. She takes at least 3 weeks to get our exams & assignments back to us. Biggest complaint: unclear expectations, yet marks students down on things she NEVER specified on. Miserable class.
TOUGH GRADER! I never saw anyone ever get an A on an assignment. About 15 quizzes through the whole semester. Tests aren't too bad. As long as you read you'll be fine. Paper isn't too terrible, best grade I heard someone get was a B. You can miss only 2 classes to receive all the points. You'll speak in front of the class about 5 times. LOTS OF HW.
Dr. C is a tough professor. In order to pass this class, you need to be on time, follow her guidelines to the t, read and pay attention in class. Some easy impromptu presentations. If she gives you feedback, apply it! Have a paper partner. She'll have fun games at times with donuts and a big potluck at the end. Do not expect to slack off and pass.
Took Dr. C at Cerritos college for SPEECH 100. She is a great all around professor. Can be tough at times and makes you work for your grade. Total of 4 presentations and about 3 exams. Make sure you don't slack off study and you will pass.
My biggest problem was the homework. I haven't had nightly homework since high school, typically I just read my text nightly and turn in assignments according to the syllabus. She requires them nightly. I hate that. Encourages students to be specific, but not very specific herself. I would receive homework back marked up to death for SMall mistakes
UNCLEAR GUIDELINES, UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS. Isn't clear on what is needed to do succeed. No constructive criticism on work. Marks down for things like, "write neater"&"be more specific." Doesn't explain concepts well. Homework&quizzes almost every class. 301 is a tough class regardless, but she makes it almost impossible.
I wont take any classes thought by this professor ever again. Shes definitly a though grader and has impossible expectations. She grades down for things like « be more specific », « edit for errors » and can be mean in comments. Also, her lectures arent really helping us writing actual speech. Think twice before enrolling in any of her classes
She isnt a push over and makes her guidelines direct. Attendance is tracked daily. Participation is tracked, say something. 9 Journals are required but they are topics of your choice, not bad. Will debate in the last month which includes one paper and a debate partner. Gives extra credit chances. Recap 3 exams, 9 journals, 1 paper, attendance
Has way too high of expectations and is rude to students. Is full of herself and treats you like an inferior. A lot of quizzes, almost every week. Will mark you off for vague things like not specific enough and be more creative. I spent almost 2 hours on my first assignment this class and got a B on it for things I feel were not relevant.
I personally don't dislike her. She's quite picky on certain things that feel irrelevant such as "uncreativity"/"lacking full circle". An ex is when choosing topics she's very persistent on things being "too boring"/not relevant. I'm not sure what relation it has to anything. It's very formulaic & I don't agree with the criteria. Wouldn't recommend
Dr. C was my favorite professor at CSULB. The work is tough & she keeps you busy, but if you invest time & effort you'll learn a lot. If you're a "C's get degrees" type student, you're going to have a hard time. Don't let these reviews from lazy students keep you from taking her. We're in COLLEGE! It's ok that she has such high expectations of us.
If you really want to learn, take Dr. C. In this class she gets to share with us her passion. It comes through in her lectures & in the way she approaches the topics. This class is tough. You'll have to read all the time, write journals, & be prepared to be called on. Not all professors care if we get a real education or not; she does. Thanks Dr.C!
If you work hard & talk to her constantly, it's possible to get A/B. Shes really picky in terms of what she wants. My main problem is her criteria is highly subjective & unclear. She's a nice person, but people had to change days before the deadline since she didn't check that people didnt get the same topic/ clarify what she wanted.
She's not a bad person, but she treats you like a kid. Her grading criteria acts like you have never given a public speech and conforms to a very rigid idea of what public speaking should be like. There is no freedom. If you want to learn public speech, take it in the summer as a seminar, not her class.
Dr.C is so sweet and an amazing professor! She has her pet-peeves when it comes to grades, but as long as you do what is asked, ask for clarification you'll be able to get at what she wants. Honestly just talk to her, and she'll be so sweet.
This class was so interesting and I loved how much you could tell she loves the subject. She's super passionate and is there for literally any help you need when it comes to the assignments / readings.
She follows her syllabus so stick to it when doing assignments. I recommend Dr.C, she is a very Fair person and this class is very interactive. Her passion for politics shines through giving us a genuine learning experience. Give her a chance, she lovely.
While Dr. Ruiz De Castilla does give an intense class, she does make this already difficult class a lot easier to deal with. She makes sure you know what's going on, and she is super accessible during office hours. Take advantage of her office hours!!! She's so sweet and wants to see you pass!
I LOVED her and her class! Quizzes based on reading (10pgs) for every class but they really help on the test! Midterm/Final isn't that hard either. The paper is a group assignment which she splits into parts. She gives great feedback and truly cares that you understand the material and is always wanting to help! If you do the work you'll pass!
Dr. Castilla is a tough but fair grader. You must complete the assigned readings in this class to pass the quizzes. The paper is broken up into multiple assignments over the semester which really helps keep track and avoids procrastination. Dr. C is one of my favorite professors in college and I wish I had taken more classes with her.
After hearing how some of my friends' experiences with 301 went, I am so relieved I took Clariza! she makes the material so easy to comprehend and makes it so the class is all on the same page. Her quizzes are tough, but they prep you and make the final and midterm SUPER simple and easy. I highly recommend her, you'll be thanking yourself later!
Has absolutely zero empathy for students who aren't her favorites. If you are a single second late, to class or turning in assignments, she will not accept it. Her lectures are long and useless. Weekly quizzes. She is vague beyond ALL measure, in her expectations and ESPECIALLY in her grading. This is NOT an easy GE. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I don't get why people hate on her so much, she was honestly so sweet and her lectures were so beneficial. She really goes out of her way to help you understand what is going on in the class.
BRUH.... probably the hardest teacher (grading-wise) Ive ever had. She is extremely specific in what she wants, if you dont give her what she wants then she will give you a 7/10 - especially on homework/classwork. There is something to do EVERY class and she does not let you out early. If theres time left then she makes you watch videos.
Dr. C is one of the BEST professors at CSULB! She really does care for your success and knows that you are capable of more. She gives the best feedback on papers which I really appreciate because it only helps you to do better on the next assignment. Go to every class! There are daily quizzes and class participation points. Take her!
GREAT feedback if you ask for help. A lot of busy work and daily quizzes at the beginning of the semester. Many small homework assignments until work on the paper starts. Paper is done in groups of 3-4 with a presentation after it's done. If you miss one day you'll miss points, so go to every class. Tests aren't bad, just keep your quizzes to study
Dr. C is a professor you would be really afraid of in the beginning. She is only tough because she knows you are capable of more. She also wants you to succeed in her class so that you take what you learn with you outside of class. 4 major speeches (1 is a group). Participation helps with studying tbh. Midterm/Final. She's a really great professor!
Kinda impossible to get a perfect score on anything cause she finds something wrong with everything. If public speaking and speech writing is your jam then this is the course for you because Dr. C knows this course inside and out but if youre a little weary on having to take a speaking course then I would pick a different professor.
Dr. Clariza Ruiz De Castilla is an amazing professor! Class is based on 4 total speeches where 1 is a group presentation. You have a midterm and a final, and she offers extra credit! She is not an easy grader but she wants you to succeed and she offers great feedback! Recommend 100%!
She's tough, but you'll learn a lot not only about her content but also how to be a better student. Very organized and professional. Daily quizzes. Tests a little tough, but use quizzes, class notes, reading notes and study guide to study and you'll do fine. There is a group paper. Pick good groupmates! Gives great feedback and grades quickly.
DO NO TAKE HER. You have been warned. I've never had a professor that was difficult like her. She marks you down for every little thing. Her quizzes are difficult and everyone in my class stressed out about studying for a small 10 point quiz. You only learn through the textbook because she doesn't teach at all. Plus she has an attitude problem!
Overall bad professor
Tough grader is an understatement. She is a perfectionist at its finest, marking you down for any little grammatical error with no sympathy to anything. Rather than teaching you the importance of quality communication, she is teaching the importance of literally wanting to end your school career because you are not perfect. Do. NOT. Take. Her.
Don't take her class unless you are just as much of a nitpick as she is. She is unclear on the fact that the majority of her grading is based on your spelling, grammar, and sentence structure. She marks you down on everything she deems to be wrong, far more than any other professor I've encountered. Would never take again unless I had no choice.
Very tough grader, not an easy class but any means. She marks you down with every little thing.
Don't take her unless you want a C or below on everything because you don't write the way she wants you to.
If you want an A, you are pretty much required to go to office hours for every essay which is ridiculous. She has insanely high expectations for even the smallest assignments. Be prepared to be marked down on everything unless you suck up and go to office hours constantly which isn't feasible for some people. Attendance policy is awful too.
She marked me down for using words that were not ones she would have preferred. If my speech did not exactly mirror my outline or I mentioned things that were not on it I lost points. You dont learn in this class. You waste a semester trying to meet her unrealistic standards. Marks us down for petty details and her profile has grammar mistakes.
must attend class (dont be late) and read before every quiz. also write speeches and rehearse them at least, if not thoroughly. her grading is difficult, although criteria is clear. she might be intimidating first but she is actually very friendly and helpful with your speech. you do learn some skills but mostly gained through actually speaking.
She's an ok professor and gives good feedback. But she's a tough grader and it's really hard to meet her standards. Just make sure to get on her good side, get extra credit and make sure you study for her exams and the class will be passable.
She's very nice, but when it comes to grading it can be VERY hard to get an A on a speech. Speeches are a HUGE part of your grade. If there is extra credit do it because you will need it unless you're some professional at public speaking. If you are shy this will either be a really good class for you or terrible. There is no in between. It is up u.
After reading all of the reviews, I thought she would be really bad. But after having her for a whole semester. She's not that bad. I admit she's a really tough grader, like she looks at the smallest things and grades it bad. Overall, I did learn A LOT from her. Like I actually learned how to give good speeches and how to present it nicely :)
Treated an easy 200 level course as a 600 level one. No one received an A during my class meeting. Her grading was more than rigorous and made me along with my classmates feel as if we were not cut out for this major. She definitely fostered my imposter syndrome. Run!
she really is a tough grader. before I select my class I did come here to search for professors but I didn't saw her name so I chose her. if I could've seen her reviews from others who took her class earlier, I've never selected her class. she is really more than just strict for her criteria you'll lose points on every punctuation you used wrong.
Wow, what can I say about Clariza? She was the ABSOLUTE worst. She was the better option of the two professors who were teaching this class. Yes, there is a lot of reading involved. However, her grading is irrational, she is anal af and I didn't learn a thing. This class isn't hard because of the subject, the subject is interesting it's just her.
Oh man. Where do we even start? Dr. Ruiz De Castilla is very knowledgeable in the field of communications so she has extremely high expectations for all of her students. This was a very tough semester, and Clariza has not done much to make it easier on us. Crazy grading criteria for everything. The final project is a group paper with presentation.
Professor Clariza is the worst. I don't even know where to begin. I absolutely despise her because she is so inconsiderate! Taking her online courses this semester was a mistake because she clearly does not understand that we are going through a pandemic + other personal stuff we have. DON'T TAKE HER!!! Even if it's your last option.
Professor Clariza is the worst. I don't even know where to begin. I absolutely despise her because she is so inconsiderate! Taking her online courses this semester was a mistake because she clearly does not understand that we are going through a pandemic + personal things that we have to deal with. DON'T TAKE HER!!!
This professor is easily the worst professor Ive ever taken. She expects you to know everything and is completely unfair. As far as your final paper, you can continue to make it better and better and its still not good enough. Ive never had a worst teacher in my college career. I will never take her again for my next few years here.
By far the absolute WORST Communications Professor here in Long Beach. Her grading is based off the most absurd things that most professors wouldn't even care about. All her slides and videos about lectures were incredibly boring and not engaging at all. She is also unapproachable and rude when emailing her.
I took Dr. Cs class back in 2019 at the Community college level. I LOVED HER CLASS! Taking her at the university level, her class is a bit more challenging. All comments about her are true. She is an extremely tough grader etc. I dont recommend taking her with a full load of classes. Maybe Summer/winter so you can focus on her class ONLY.
Dr C is literally horrible. she was not understanding at all about school being online. she expects you to be able to travel for wifi and buy new electronics if need be. she is also a SUPER HARD GRADER. she can be passive aggressive or just straight rude when you ask for help and try to explain a situation. DO NOT TAKE HER
SMH, where do I start? This was my first semester as a transfer to Long Beach and this was the only class open and I immediately regretted signing up! It was online and we had speeches after speeches. ALL OF IT HAD TO BE MEMORIZED. Not only does she not consider that we have other classes to deal with, but would also be a tough grader. DON'T TAKE!!
Terrible at communicating what she wants so make sure to ask questions! She grades very tough without much explanation, and is the same with in class discussions. Always pay attention, as she doesnt have much patience, and her quizzes are on the readings/concepts that we go over in class afterwords. Wouldnt recommend
She was an abnormally difficult grader who lacked a certain level of compassion and understanding that all the great teachers have. Not clear with her grading, uninspiring lectures, and a palpable sense of tension between students and teacher. Please AVOID unless absolutely necessary. You will not have a good educational experience I guarantee it.
Avoid at all costs! Doesn't clearly state criteria then nitpicks every detail of paper/projects. No care in learning how to teach, just demands creativity while grading us down on thinking outside the textbook. Checked points and impossible to get an A with how she grades. Anything you ask of her is deemed "too much work".
This has been the most unnecessary difficult class I have ever taken. I highly recommend that you DON'T take this professor. I have never seen such an incompetent professor ever, she does not want to learn how canvas or zoom works. She does a lot of unpredictable things. And is rude to many of the students. Please avoid and save yourself a headache
She is "THE" worst professor. Please dont take her class. If u miss one deadline for the speech, u will not be allowed to present ur speech which will make it harder for u to even pass the class. She really needs to get a life. She is literally heartless. Even if she makes a mistake while grading she doesnt correct it. Quiz's are bs.
yeah, shes a harsh grader but ! a lot of extra credit opportunities at the end of the semester. gives really good feedback and brought her doggy a bunch of times !!!! shes there to actually help you improve your communication skills. is nerve-wracking to present in front of a bunch of people but I genuinely feel better than 5 months ago!
Do not take her class! She grades so harsh and it isn't worth the stress.
now.. if you want your GE PUBLIC SPEAKING CLASS to be your hardest course, take her :-)))) she nitpicks everything and grades so harsh. i spent all of my time on this class and it was never enough for her. shes nice tho and offers a good amount of extra credit to make up for her unreasonably harsh grading.
She is a really tough grader but she's nice in person (brought us donuts once). Offers a bunch of extra credit (do it if you can you'll need the points) but doesn't take any late work (automatic 0 unless you have "official documentation" of an excuse). The textbook was "required" but I used it maybe once since she covers everything in her lectures.
Extremely hard grader for a GE and has zero to no compassion when you are sick. Get ready to get called on to talk/present every class. There will be quizzes seconds after learning new material. She goes quick, so it's hard to take notes (you can't use them). This class consists of 5 speeches (2 minor, 2 major, 1 final group) and a final. Just dont
Just the most disrespectful and rude professor I have ever had. She may seem nice and kind, but if you ever have a question or trouble understanding a concept she will make you feel stupid. Her lectures are no help for the essays she makes us write, so it's almost mandatory to go to her during office hours to get a decent grade. Do not take her.
She is definitely tough and is way too strict for a GE. Show up to class and do your work, put some effort in and you will be okay. I would say maybe lean towards another professor. She brings her dog sometimes. But beware that she is kind of a character and not always in the best way. She talks down on all of her students.
She is a great professor, is a very hard grader and time consuming. As long as you put all your effort you will do well. Grades harshly but she wants the best for her students. If you try you will do well (take advantage of the extra credit opportunities they help your grade!)
This professor seems sweet at first, but in reality, she can be really rude. She is very stubborn and not understanding at all. She is very strict on all due dates unless you have official documentation. I think she forgets that this course is a GE.. Many of us have never had to speak publicly and she is not understanding of that.
She doesn't give any good feedback and fails to explain assignments efficiently . he is also very inconsiderate and is a very unpleasant professor. Going to attend her class was a drag .
Throughout the semester, she was rude to students and unclear with her grading criteria. Lectures were uninspiring and she was extremely picky when it came to certain aspects of her assignments. She lacked compassion and it was not enjoyable at all having to attend that class Good teachers normally create fun environments--she definitely didn't!
She's got high standards. She expect you to meet her very specific standard but often times does not explain specifically enough. She picks on Run-On sentences very much. Sometimes the comments makes you feel uncomfortable. You have to explain very specifically even when she said no complete sentences needed. She is still nice as a person though.
she is a very hard grader (nags about run on sentences). she gives very unclear directions yet expects very specific answers in your writing. she does not give helpful feedback and it often feels belittling. she is short with students and does not offer much help to you in her office hours. would not recommend!!!!
As a person, she seems like a cool. As a teacher... She gives a PDF version for the chapters needed so no need to buy a book. The chapters are easy. She assigns a quiz every CLASS based on the assigned chapter. The quizzes are easy if you read, somewhat detailed fill in the blank & MCQ. Midterm Major Paper Drafts every week on subject of choice
I have never seriously disliked a teacher until I met her.
Scrict about late work, but half the time it doesn't post the assignment on time. It needs proof that you were sick or at the funeral of a close relative. Allergic to giving full points.
For a GE, this class was close to a nightmare. While trying to navigate my first semester at college, she definitely made my transition a lot harder than it needed to be. She is a VERY strict grader. However, if you show improvement throughout the course, it provides the best feeling of satisfaction. Would not recommend though.
Absolutely evil teacher, almost made me lose my will to live tbh. Don't take her unless you love public speaking
I did not exactly finish taking this class, because I ended up dropping it three weeks in. She has an absolutely insane list of banned topics that you are not allowed to have in your speeches, which includes: same-sex marriage, POSITIVE THINKING?, and global warming. Those are just a few but the list is something straight out of an SNL skit.
I would not recommend it. She grades thoroughly which can be nice. She sends voice memo feedback on every assignment. She will be rude and comment harshly on your mistakes. She brings her dog in on test days which is nice. I did not enjoy this class. Her assignments took up way too much time and did not feel necessary. Way to hard for a 130 class
Very unclear on directions but will give bad grade if it is not exactly how she wants it.
AVOID AVOID AVOID
She talks to us as if we already know this information or already should know it (mind you I am a freshman in college). I went to her office hours one time and its like she talks in riddles. I was asking the most basic questions to help understand the assignment but she just made it more difficult to understand.
This professor is very condescending towards students. She would shame students for asking clarifying questions, as if she doesn't have horribly convoluted instructions for assignments. For a class about gender, she didn't know the difference between a drag queen and a trans woman, she had less of a grasp on gender concepts than we did.
Very sweet, just a very harsh grader. Her instructions aren't clear as well as her feedback. In class is very easy and she is lenient with your reading. Doesn't punish if you don't do the reading just reminds you to know it for the tests. Only two tests (midterm and final) and a final group project. Lockdown browser was used for the Syllabus quiz.
Her course was pretty difficult, and never wants to give full points on little assignments. Every assignment will be graded hardly. Gave 5 speeches on the year, and if you didnt give a speech that she didnt like she would give bad grades, even if you spoke well. Be prepared for a C or low B in this course if you dont give this class your 110%.
Avoid her at all costs. She is one of the most entitled professors in the campus. The first day that I showed up to her class she told me to drop the class. I couln't just drop the class as I needed this class to declare my major, I tried to switch but I couldn't. The entire semester was hell with her. I could pass CALC 2 with an A & fail her class
Dr. Castilla is very intimidating when you first meet her. If you can get on her good side you will do fine, but she picks favorites. Be aware of the rubric and follow it EXACTLY. You will never get full points on an assignment so don't expect it. Lots of speaking assignments and group projects. Find another professor if possible.
AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!! U have to give a speech almost every lesson in a english writing requirement class. Never gives full points on any assignment. Quiz at the start of every lesson based on long readings. Long essay assignments week after week which she'll grade very harshly. I wouldn't even take her if it was my last option.
She is a horrendous professor. She is two faced and gives rude comments as her feedback. I put in so much effort and this is the one class I don't have an A in. NEVER gives full points on anything. Expect a low B or high C if you do the bare minimum. The class and material itself isn't hard she just makes it 10x harder. If you take her good luck!
The way grades are weighed doesn't coincide with the criteria in her syllabus. Take advantage of the extra credit opportunities. Instructions are vague. If questions are asked about material her responses are condescending. Doesn't utilize the textbook because it's conveyed in lectures. Unforgiving towards mistakes in writing and attendance points.
This class was horrible. For a GE class she is way to harsh and expects perfect public speaking. I didn't learn how to public speak I learned how to write in the way she wanted. She isn't clear with directions which makes speeches imposible. Her feedback is rude and not helpful. She expects memorization but doesn't give us enough time. Don't take.
Awful professor. Does not provide clear instructions nor grading criteria. Not helpful. Avoid her.
prof clariza was a vry harsh n strict teacher as a freshman her clss gave me so much anxiety! shes SO tough at grading nvr gives full points i gave my all in this clss had to memorize all my 5 sppchs which allowd me to do well in hr clss she was nice toward me but VRY rude to other clssmates i would nvr take her again do extra credit IT HELPS
As someone that came form a bad high school with zero homework her class was not as hard as everyone makes it seem. She is a tough grader and blunt but as long as you show up, do the work, and participate you'll be fine! She gave many extra credit opportunities along with each day of class having an assignment so SHOW UP!!
very awful.
Honestly she seemed nice at first but she is an EXTREME grader. She never gave full credit and participation MATTERS. A course like this shouldn't have been so hard to get through .I wouldn't recommend :(
Tough grader, but engaging classes. Leveraged unstuckstudy and ChatGPT for study prep - really helped me stay on top of things. Would take again if needed.
Her grading is EXTREME. She is EXTREMELY strict when it comes to deadlines, is not lenient with assignments, if you mess up on an assignment don't even try to talk to her about it as she will only talk to you in a snobbish condescending manner.
It'll be really hard to get full credit for any assignment. Don't miss class especially when you have something to turn in because she will NOT accept any late work. She is really nice overall and exams will be based on the lectures. 5 presentations which aren't to bad. I recommend her class but you cannot be lazy!!
This class has 5 speeches and they gradually get more difficult and worth more of your grade. She gives a lot of contradictory instruction and grades super heavy. She also can sometimes seem rude but maybe thats just me. If you can avoid her but if you are gonna take her, show up to EVERY class. Sometimes theres in class work and sometimes not.
REALLY REALLY HARD GRADER !! is ruthless when it comes to grading and is overall a bad professor. DO NOTTTT RECOMMEND EVEN IF ITS THE LAST PROFESSOR LEFT!
She does not waiver from the syllabus at all. Whatever the syllabus says it what she will stick to. She is an extremely harsh grader and if you're tardy to any speech, you're pretty much screwed and she won't let you perform it. She gives harsh feedback as well. The tests aren't too difficult, but they don't weigh as much as the speeches.
She was not nice, would say your speech draft is terrible. Tough grader, lots of work for a GE. Get anyone else fr
She grades like if she were grading her worst enemies work. She is condescending and takes literally no excuses unless it's a life or death situation. She picks her favorites in class. Even if she is the last option available I'd recommend not to take her, wait for next semester or be ready to go through hell.
I'm sorry but take another elective. She was rude and condescending the whole semester to entire class. She publicly announced she was docking someone's grade for being late, even though she is late very often. Very confusing rubrics and not flexible. Extremely unengaging lectures. Doesn't seem to want to be there. Most people dropped the class.
i've never failed a class in my life but she's such a tough grader i failed comm 200. take literally anyone else
Get ready to have a terrible time in her class. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Someone made a very succinct comment a ways down. They noted that "she lacks a certain compassion and understanding that all the great teachers have." It's fine to be a difficult grader; it's clear she's intelligent, but you can't be an amazing, impactful professor if you aren't considerate. I genuinely believe she's in the wrong profession.
This whatever her title is, is total nonsense. she is no good and does not see or care about any repercussions made.
Might've been the hardest GE class. Classwork is relatively easy, 3 small speeches & 2 bigger ones, but she makes it 100 times harder than it should be. Has you write rough drafts, & if they don't have 100% perfect grammar or are written in the way she wants, she deducts several points. Nobody got an A. Her feedback is vague and unprofessional.
The teacher is a strict grader, and attendance is important.
She's a very tough and confusing grader. She also thinks every sentence is a run-on, even if it's grammatically correct with dependent and independent clauses arranged properly in a given sentence. One of the most unusual grading quirks I've ever experienced in a class. Utterly hated almost any type of compound-complex sentence. Stay away please!
She is a very tough grader. I never received full credit on any of my assignments, despite spending hours and relating as a Chicano to the course material. She took over this class from Dr. Loretta, who I hear is amazing. But Professor Ruiz De Castilla is the worst. Do not take her even if you love Chicano Studies. She should not teach this class.
I would not recommend this professor at all. Her expectations are out of touch and she will dock you for anything and everything. Even exceptional students will fail to meet her expectations.
Please don't take this professor. It almost feels like she purposely docks points on assignments just to make sure you're always close to failing. Definitely lacks the empathy and care that most good professors have. Office Hours is mandatory if you want anything higher than a C. Genuinely not a great time. Also very condescending.
