Very clear and helpful. Videotapes students giving their speeches.
His class lecture has only about a 1/3 of what is on his test. Is big on service work.
When I took the class, we watched movies and wrote about them. He didn't cover anything in the book but we took some notes off the board. We also took our test in the learning center on our own time. I didn't learn much from his class but he's a nice guy.
easy teacher.Only gives 2 tests, speeches count for majority of grade. Would recommend for an easy class. The only problem was that over 80% of grade came after drop date
fairly easy, laidback, always late and boring lectures.
This guy is LIBERAL, and a hard teacher. he takes speeking to seriously. He is easy to pass if you agree with his backward thinking. If your on his bad side you have no chance.
My public speaking course was good, but pretty difficult. If you pay attention and apply what you learn, you'll do good. Also, if you want to get good grades you'll need to practice each speech at least 10-20 times (i felt quite confident after 25 or so times). there are four speeches of different percentages, and 2 exams which arent very hard.
Do not take 1311 with this guy unless you want to work. Not a good summer class. We had 2 speeches, 1 group project, and 7-8 page research paper to do in about 4 weeks. Plus you have to turn in chptr reviews. Tests required intensive chptr reading. Loves to challenge students. Nice guy, just don't recommend 1311 with him.
He sets a high standard for performance and gets it. He is a role model and you will learn to do public speaking well even if you though you never could. He challenges you for your best.
This guy knows what he is talking about! He could teach most of the other teachers a thing or two! Word of warning though, many of his test questions are in the book, but not covered in lecture, so be careful!
He has a bad attitude and kind of scared me the first day. Not a friendly guy, kind of a jerk. I did learn a lot that will probably help me. I think he liked me though and ended up getting an A, I have no clue how though. Get ready to stay up until 3:00 AM practicing your "gestures" haha
His class was pretty easy for the most part. My only complaint is that he wasn't very organized.
Not a very nice guy kind of a jerk, knows what he is talking about, he assigned a project that had nothing to do with class. I would never take him again I hated him.

I took his class in December (minimester) and truly enjoyed it. We did 4 speeches and one test. The student's speeches were interesting. It is not a hard class but you have to work. I made a B. English is not my first language and this class is one of my favorites.
You need to quit.
Good teacher makes it interesting...you have four speeches and 2 tests...midterm and final.. The only thing was i thought i would of been able to do better on his test...
His class was definitely interesting...It wasn't the hardest class I've ever taken but it certainly wasn't the easiest. TESTS, HOWEVER WERE FREAKING HARD! (I will say that) He has a bit of a cocky attitude but he was an alright guy. Worked my butt of and made a B...wouldn't recommend this class if you just want a blow off.
I was in debate in high school & it helped me overcome my fear of public speaking; I took his class and he criticized me so much that I developed a fear of public speaking again. That should speak volumes for how I feel about his class. Didn't like this class, dreaded coming to it more every meeting. Don't know how I made an A either. Curve...?
5 speeches, quizzes and 2 tests. lectures are boring and none of it showed up on tests. Extra credit was too much work, but it shows him you care so he'll probably grade your speech easy if you do it. Suck up to him, and don't do well on your first speech so that later you can seem much better in the speeches that count for more credit. good luck!
Rude, arrogant. Doesn't believe in study guides, so good luck on tests. I did my work in the class and got an 88 on the first test and an 86 on the final. Grades speeches hard. The Chapter quizzes and "iclaim" assignments will make you want to shoot yourself. His lectures are very rushed as well.
This teacher can be a jerk. He grades really hard on speeches. The assignments are very boring and do not help you become a better speaker. He is not understanding for students. If you can put up with him the class okay.
I just love his lectures (never missed a day). He always makes it clear with interesting examples so that everyone can remember it. The way he grades is fair too. He gives students chances to improve their performances as the semester goes. I highly recommend everyone to take his class :D
I love his class! Go for it
He didn't give reviews for the impossible tests, he graded speeches too hard. I prepared for days and rehearsed my speech for hours and got an 84. His last speech, the debate speech, he told us about it one day and the next day said no class and that the speech would be next class. Gave us one chance for extra credit and it was on a saturday! >:(
Good speaker, entertaining class, this is not a professor to take if this class is not "major specific". I would not have taken this class if I would have known how stressful it was going to be, and that excludes all public-speaking induced stress. Mr. Friesen grades EXTREMELY hard. Great professor for speech majors, otherwise I would run for it.
He was fun! everybody that complains are ppl who dont wanna do school work..school is not for you.. he teaches very well, and is willing to help if you need it.. if you wanna learn, take him. he also helps you face your fear and boost your confidence in speaking
Very upbeat and comical professor. He makes the course enjoyable. He's very understanding and will work with you if you keep contact with him. He plays by the book though so no freedbies and dont expect him to bend over backwards for you. Public Speaking sucks and he grades your speech accordingly so no slackers in this course. I'd take him again!
Great Teacher
Overall very personable, very upbeat, talks too much. No quizzez, however tests were hard, no pointers, just read the book. 6-8 research paper due in 4 weeks prior to end of class was not enough time, limited resources were required. Would have rather done public speech.
He is a very likable teacher and very upbeat! That being said, he does tend to read from the textbook. I have gone to every class, paid attention and studied and still have not done well on the test. And compared to other teachers, he grades hard. Unless you are going fo a speech/communication major, I would not recommend his class! Run away!!
This teacher loves to speak and gives great lectures. But on the other hand tests are very hard and doesn't give that much direction when it comes to tests. He grades very hard. He doesn't put grades in the computer so you really can't tell how your doing. If your a speech major, take his class..if not run away!!
Tests are much more difficult than you would expect. He reads from the text book and then expounds a little bit but reading the chapters before class is favorable to him; reading the chapters before the test is pretty much the only way to make a better grade than just passing. He does a good job at covering the entire book through the semester.
Took a summer course. Had a speech per week. Easy if you study and practice your speeches. Would take this professor again.
Great professor, I've learned a lot in his class.
Public speaking is the class everyone dreads taking (unless their a speech major). This is how I felt going to first class. By the end of his class I had a different view on public speaking & communication in general. His lectures are both informative and entertaining (he mentions food often)& he was very helpful.Learn his language & you'll do fine

Grades speeches fairly hard but wants you to pass. It was hard to even make a b on a speech. Test aren't very much of the grade but are REALLY hard! Normally an A/B student and received a C.
Mr. Friesen is a great professor. He talks clearly. He relates his lectures to his students so you get great understanding of his lectures. He wants you to pass but you have to do your part. 4 speeches. research and citation (in your speech) is a big deal. He's a very chill person, down to earth.
I rather stick pens in my eyes than take this professor. I was obviously struggling, but he did not care. Tests are bad. No review sheets and expects you to read the whole book. This was the worst class and teacher I have ever taken. I went home after class and cried because it was so hard, and it ruined my GPA.
This professor is very easy to understand. There will be projects and papers assign and he may not warn you of the dead line. He is well respected and very helpful. He loves when the class has feedback and makes the class be more interesting.
This professor is very easy to understand. There will be projects and papers assign and he may not warn you of the dead line. He is well respected and very helpful. He loves when the class has feedback and makes the class be more interesting. This class is well plan out. The teacher is easily contacted too.
I am a waiter so I talk publicly almost everyday so I do not have a problem with public speaking. I still received a B in the class. His critiques are vague and he is very harsh on grading. DO NOT take him if you want an easy A. He takes his job as a public speaking teacher way to seriously. Plus he makes you read the full textbook
This was probably one of the worst classes I have ever taken in my life. He grades way too harsh, and takes his job as a community college speech teacher WAY too seriously. He is a crazy fruit loop and always stares you down during class until you're physically uncomfortable. He's annoying and passive aggressive. DO NOT. TAKE. HIM.
Not an easy A by any means. You will HAVE to practice your speeches for at least a week before you give them. Final/mid-term are stupid hard, you basically have to have the textbook memorized to get an A. Speeches are graded on their own, not on improvement. Nitpicky grader but he gives good feedback and tells you why you had points off.
Professor Friesen is horrible and poor teaching agenda.
Literally the EASIEST class to pass. the midterm and final will be pretty hard. they are all multiple choice and vocabulary. He's super laid back and funny. Participation and civic duties are a chunk of your grade. tests are only like 10%. Seriously eyes you down in class tho. Leaniant on politics and the BBT for teaching occasionally. you'll pass.
since day one when i walked through those, Mr. friesen has treated us with respect and kindness. if i was taking speech again Mr. friesen will be my first choice
Speech as a hybrid during the summer, three speeches and they're pretty easy and a couple of quizzes that are completion based. He was a pretty good guy and I wrote my speeches the night before, went to class and presented, and left after everyone finished plus you got your grade that same day, would recommend for summer
I took this course over the summer as a hybrid. He gives good feedback if you're really looking to improve in you speaking skills. Otherwise, if you just need the credit, he knows that's the case for most students and doesn't go too hard on the subject material. Do the required assignments and you're pretty much guaranteed to get an A.
I took this class as a hybrid course during the summer. The assignments are very straightforward and Friesen does a great job at explaining his criteria and expectations. However, he is a tough grader as he aims to improve his students speech skills. This class requires some effort and time but still leaves you time to enjoy the summer.
AWESOME!!! EASY A.
Friesen? Yeah, he's great. He's funny and laid-back. Some people think the eye contact thing is weird, but he's just making sure you're paying attention. He lectures a lot, which is kinda a drag, but hey! What class doesn't have lectures? He's passionate about speech, which is awesome. I barely used the text (sorry prof!). Tests were a breeze. :)
You definitely need the book, heavy lectures makes U take notes on EVERYTHING, sometimes very tedious & boring , too much eye contact makes U uncomfortable. When giving speeches BE READY! no reading, no messing up on slide show if U have one, time & consistency matters, heavy grader, takes points off for nothing! Would never take this class again.
Professor Friesen is a great professor! This class was difficult for me only because I have a huge fear of public speaking. He is a tough grader, but he is clear in what he expects. If you take his class, I highly recommend going in during his office hours before speeches are due. He is happy to give you pointers to improve your speech.
Prof Friesen is funny and genuinely cares about this profession, so expect to be graded by the book on his criteria. He is a pretty fair grader for someone with his kind of experience - he won't kill you, but he will point out things you need to work on. He acknowledges progress and is more than happy to assist you if you are having trouble.
Professor Friesen was a wonderful professor. This course was not an easy A, but it was very enjoyable and I always looked forward to class time. Public speaking is not an easy thing for people to do, but Professor Freisen does a great job of making everyone realize that we are all in the same boat and that we all want to succeed.
He is so bad at responding to email's and the way his course online is set up is confusing, as well as the speech papers they are hard to understand and confusing. Takes a while to update your speech grades. Quizzes are timed and can only have one attempt. DONT RECOMMEND.
Dont take this class if you want to pass with an easy A because you wont get it unless you spend way too much time on speeches.
HORRIBLE DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. He rarely replies to emails and when he does, he doesn't do what you've asked him to do. I asked for feedback multiple times on my speeches (which made up the majority of your grade) and he would always say he would write some comments but he never did. I had an A but it randomly dropped to a B right at the end?
Does not seem to understand what an online class is. I was forced numerous times to find outside resources and individuals in order to complete his assignments. Large amounts of his assignments were unrelated to the subject as well. Guess, if you need the grade and waited too long to register, this professor is for you.
Very unorganized, hard to tell what is for a grade. Doesnt grade work. Lecture is reading straight from the book and watching youtube for 3 hrs. Bad temper, yelled at someone right before their speech. Terrible with emails. Try not to stick out, do every assignment, catch issues early before your grade suffers, & you'll be fine. Speeches, no tests.
Would not recommend. There are better speech profs out there. Overall rude to class, seems like he is always on a power trip, considers a B a grade that needs to be redone, singles out students throughout course. Whether it be something they did during a speech, even though he is against singling out. Also, the text book is the study guide..
The professor is genuinely terrible at his job. Not I can say much about in class but as for online I do not recommend and and highly suggest he not be an online professor. He never answers his email and never gives feedback. He does not communicate with his students. I mean I understand its an online class, but its still your job to communicate.
Terrible just terrible
Great teacher! He was very helpful with every speech and lets you email him about ideas for your speech. The mid-term for the Speak Up book can mostly be found on quizlet. He really cares about making his class the best and if something goes wrong with the speech he thinks about how he can explain better next time. He is a must take!
Firstly, if at all possible DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF'S CLASS! If you have to take his class, be aware that he doesn't play fairly. He does not give ample descriptions of what is needed for your assignments and does not respond in a timely manner. He will go out of his way to try and fail you as I and multiple other students have found this semester.
I took his hybrid class. He is a very tough grader and I wouldnt recommend him. The highest grade for a speech in our class was a A- for the whole year! Not worth it, dont do it.
we all do badly on some assignments every now and then, but if you do bomb an assignment in this class you don't get a 2nt chance, that's it, your just out of luck in his words" that's just not how the class works."
I had to take a communications class and I unfortunately had him as a professor. Public speaking terrified me to my core. He gave a project that required you and a partner to watch a scene of a movie and then talk about forms of communication in it. My partner dropped and he told me "that's too bad" and gave me 0 because it required both of us.
Prof. Friesen was great, his lectures are very rich in information and through them, he proves to be VERY knowledgeable in the field. I respect him as a professor and as a person. As long as you read the units, complete the activities and attend his class you will get an A. Remember it is a business communication class he expects you to be prepared
Was an amazing professor and really cares about his students doing well. This is not an easy A class you have to show up and read the textbook online. I would definitely take one of his classes again. I was so nervous for speech but he made this class so much better than I thought it would be
Harsh grader. Been doing this for a long time. No funny business with this guy. More downgrading than helping and curving up.
a very harsh grader, barely anyone makes an A in this class. take his job very seriously and makes weird amounts of eye contact during lectures
A very rude professor who doesn't care about his students. Talks a lot and makes way too much eye contact. Doesn't help in preparing you for the final or midterm. Takes a lot of points off for small things, very harsh grader. Dont take this class.
Amazing professor. He is always open to talk and help. His lectures were very funny. Attendance is pretty mandatory. Fairly easy-going. There's a volunteer work project that's a little time consuming but not difficult if you do it early. Professor Friesen has an amazing resume and I trust everything he says. TAKE HIM!
The tags are sarcastic. Had this guy years ago but still vividly remember him threatening me because I was late to his class. Told me I would be next to nothing and trash. Treated me like the prisoners he used to teach. Genuinely surprised he is still teaching. That tenure must be a pretty powerful thing huh? VERY inspirational for the shy I'm sure
In-person lectures were quite boring, with occasional group work. Homework/exams were done online. There were also assignments on D2L that he did not usually mention during class; you just had to keep a lookout for them. There is a group presentation and a solo presentation. The solo presentation involves volunteering (minimum 10 hours).
Take this professor. Professor Friesen's lectures are engaging and clear. There are weekly assignments as well as quizzes on D2L and there aren't actual tests, but instead projects that are very direct and not complicated. To maintain an A just simply do your work on D2L. Would definetely take it again!
Don't expect to know what your grade is because you won't till on the transcript. Format on D2L is horrible. You will have no idea when things are due. All he is very rude to his students. I almost walked out of his class because he was showing a list of politically correct sayings that had nothing to do with the material we were shown that day.
He didn't follow the syllabus, was not always clear on instructions, canceled 5 classes and only notified about 4, did not give enough practice for speeches, hard midterm and exam, and surprise homework. I tried to go to his office hours and after emailing him and in-class asking and setting up a time, he didn't show and I wasted an hour.
This professor adapts to the class needs very well; I have a hard time understanding the issue most students have read these reviews. Most of the time people just do not do the work which makes it hard to understand the class. This prof is willing to work with any student to make sure they understand the material.
I felt good with him.
VERY simple class. There's a weekly quiz on the current chapter; they're EASY, as long as you read the chapter & listen to the lectures. He is heavy on group projects, & doing side assignments, but they are easy. Professor Friesen can come off as intimidating, but towards the end, I enjoyed having him. He's fair, understanding & a slow grader.
Prof. Friesen is not the worst professor ever but he isn't the best either. He didn't stick to the syllabus and added an extra group project (during another group project with different groups!!). Also, there is so. much. homework. Slow grader too. If you can, avoid his class, it's not worth it.
