Awesome guy. not too difficult, and he really wants everyone to do well. He offers a lot of help.
Mumbles in front of the class. Very boring and monotones. Very fast paced class. Could be easier with a different professor, do not take him
He doesn't always take attendance but I would try to go as much as possible. Lectures are AMAZING because he doesn't only teach the material, he makes it a point to make shore that you know why something is the way it is. Everything in the lecture, I have used for the department exams. They were VERY helpful.
Clark was the best. He was clear and made class bearable. He really enjoys teaching and has a lot of fun with it. He is a really cool guy and willing to explain anything. I missed a lot of class for medical reasons and it was so easy to catch up.
This guy really likes math and it shows. Great teacher, great guy. Wanted him for 155 but didn't get him which is sad.
He goes above and beyond to make sure you know why things work. Sometimes it's helpful, sometimes it's confusing. Took attendance every day (5 day class). Do your homework. Don't buy the book. He's very straightforward and will help you as long as you ask and want the help.
Clark is an excellent teacher. He makes sure that everyone understands the subject matter before moving on. If you ever have a problem, he is always available either by email or office hours
Clark is a really funny guy. His classes had the highest test averages on every single test, so clearly he's doing something right. The class isn't going to be easy no matter who you take, but Clark tries to give you as much of an advantage as he can by giving hints as to what's gonna be on the test. He also held review sessions for every exam.
He's a very good teacher and knows the material very well. Do not be afraid to ask a question, he will be glad to help. Although, he does talk to himself, he is entertaining.
He enjoys Math a lot, and it shows. His grading is fair and he holds review sessions before tests to make sure to cover all the information. Sometimes his writing is fast, so make sure you come prepared to take notes and sit in front. Overall, chill guy with a fair course structure.
Lectures are very dry, and his monotone voice does not help. He goes through lessons very quick and confuses himself a LOT. There will be test questions that are unlike examples he does in class. Take a more experienced teacher like Squire or Goodykoontz if you need this class.
Clark is a very helpful professor who clearly knows what he is talking about. He makes sure you understand the material before moving on. Participation is vital to passing this class. I recommend sitting in the front and being involved in the class lecture.
Best math teach at the university in my opinion. He knows his stuff and explains hard concepts with ease. He makes calculus not that difficult.
Great lecturer. It was my second time taking the class, and he helped clear a lot of things up with me. His tests were relatively fair and most of them came from his examples in class
Super Nice Guy and smart but makes everything way harder than it needs to be. He gave extra homework on thanksgiving so enough said.
By far the best professor I've had from the math department. He is incredibly knowledgable in the material and clearly loves math and wants to share that love of math with his students. He gives plenty of examples and is very thorough in how and why procedures are done. He prepares you very well for his exams.
Gives good notes, but be sure to write down some stuff he say's that'll help you understand how to do the problems.
Clark was very knowledgable about what he was teaching which was very surprising in such a young professor. Great interaction with the class and attendance is not mandatory however attending can result in extra credit.
Great Teacher 100% Reccomend
Clark is a wonderful professor. He knows what hes talking about and is easy to approach and get help from.
He's the worst math teacher you'll ever take. He makes everything harder that it actually is. If you have the chance to take it with another instructor DO IT!!!
Clark is really knowledgable and works hard to guide is students into understanding the material. Participating in class and answering questions let's him know you understand. There's some group work and a quiz every Friday. Homework load isn't terrible either. It's a hard class but Clark is so helpful and teaches it very well!!
Metz was hands down the best professor I had in the math department. He made everything in Calc 4 so simple and did a bunch of practice problems every lecture until we mastered the material. I would HIGHLY recommend everyone to take him for Math 261, he made this class one of my easiest classes last semester!
Really good professor. Hes fair with his grading and he really prepares students for the exams and final.
Prepares students for exams and the finals. He makes sure that all students really understand what is going on, and will go through examples step-by-step to make sure everyone understands.
Professor Metz is very knowledgeable about calculus, but he teaches way too fast. It is hard to take notes, and easier to just watch. This makes it hard to take home class notes to study for exams. Overall, he is a good professor. You just have to be prepared for curve balls on exams and lots of homework. He makes you work hard!
His lectures were really boring and I felt like I could just learn from the homework, but you get participation points that affect your grade so you have to go to class. The exams were almost identical to the exam reviews but everyone did so bad on the first exam so he made them easier. Do the homework cause you get unlimited tries!
Prof. Metz is a cool dude. He is very passionate about this subject and tries to make it as simple as possible for a business math course. Beginning of the course is easy and should be review if you had good HS math. End gets challenging but not too bad. Cumulative final but replaces lowest exam score. Weekly quizzes and HW, "tophat" participation.
Just show up to class otherwise you're in for a world of hurt. TopHat questions can really hurt your score in you don't participate. Other than that, all homework and quizzes are online, but it's helpful to be in class to review rather than going in blind. He cares that you succeed, but doesn't cut you a ton of slack for stupid stuff.
If you don't do good on tests and get 100% on homework you're basically screwed. He's a very great teacher, but is very stern and tries to be witty. Attendance is very important. The TopHat questions can kill your overall attendance/participation.
Good professor! Make sure you go to class or your attendance grade will kill you. Go to the review sessions !!
He just makes the classroom such a great environment to be in. Wears hawaiian shirts every Friday. Laughed when we said Dryer Method after learning Washer Method. Never lost doubt in us. Would retake
Definitely an awkward guy, but his class isnt too hard. Just do the assigned stuff online and youll get 100% in the homework. Help sessions are added extra credit at the end so Id go, it brought my B to an A at the end of the semester. Attendance isnt mandatory but you get points if you go. Lectures arent too bad-just take notes
Your attendance grade is dependent on a quiz at the end go every class. Do not ask him simple questions, he'll be rude about it. The homework doesn't relate well to what he teaches, so it will take some time, but you have 30 tries to it's okay.
Very helpful teacher. Very good at explaining things and making you understand them.
Good teacher, explains things simply and clearly, good choice for people who struggle with math. But, for me, the homework assignments feel long, redundant, & tedious. I really already knew the content (I was in MATH 124) and the class just felt super boring, like busy work. If you took calc in high school, this class will seem laughably basic.
Doesn't care about students. If you normally struggle in math try to go to tutoring as much as possible.
Professor Metz was by far the easiest professor to get a hold of. I would send him an email and less than 10 minutes later I would get a response. Course wise, do the lecture notes even though some can be super long, do the homework, and do your best on the tests. Its high school math so if you really pay attention this class is an easy A.
Clark Metz is a very helpful and respectful professor. His lectures are very helpful and he provides really good feedback. There is a good bit of homework in this course but it is all based off of class lectures. He also does helpful review sessions for exams. Overall a great teacher and great guy.
This professor is really good at explaining course material. With the online asynchronous course there is a good bit of work to do, but there is no regular meeting times and you watch videos on your own time. He has exam review sessions before every test. This class is really easy to pass as long as you pay attention and put in the time.
absolutely terrible, his class averages for multiple students are well below failing or barely passing.
I had to withdraw from his class, because I had a grade that didn't want to go up (D+). A lot of students were struggling with exams and he would often tell us to change something about our study habits and that we could still bring up our grade but that wasn't my case. If you're not good at math, good luck. Also take it online, if you can.
I got a 33 on the ACT math and took higher math in high school, and yet, I failed this class, not once, but *twice*. There is an utterly obnoxious amount of homework every single week for the duration of the entire course. However. He does explain the math in a simple, non-STEM oriented way. I have friends who always hated math but liked his class
Clark is a great guy! He makes math as simple and easy as he can. A LOT of homework, but if you do it, it'll pay off on tests. Even if math isn't your strength (like myself), he makes it easier. Just put in the work and you'll be fine.
Will help with any questions you have
this class is impossible. he doesnt lecture he just does problems but he goes so fast. i feel like im just copying notes instead of learning
Professor Metz is OK at teaching but goes way to fast. The class itself is awful, hardest math I've ever taken. If you can take any other class DO IT. this class was the hardest class I've taken so far and it's stupid how it's mandatory.
He's a bit quirky, but is extremely organized with the notes and it all makes sense. From what Ive heard about other math professors for math 124, he is the best (I believe he is the director). Definitely go to class and do ALL the homework, quizzes, and pretests. Get help right when you need it. dont get behind. He has lots of time outside class.
Metz is a good Professor, he makes math more interesting and is a fun and quirky guy. There's lots of homework every week, but all his test questions come from the homework. Attendance isn't mandatory but he does give you extra attendance points if you come to class!
Great teacher. Gives very good notes in lecture and is very reasonable with how grading goes for exams and homework. There is a decent amount of homework for this class but he gives you plenty of time to do it.
This is the most failed class at WVU. I've taken this class twice and I don't do well. I've asked for help and he told me to find a different way to study, he has resources but he should find better tutors for the class. This course can be challenging if you are not good at math in general. Find tutoring asap if you struggle with college algebra.
Prof. Metz is quite honestly a horrible instructor. Being the director of MATH 124, he develops the course in a way that is not beneficial to the student. He lectures way too fast, and you will do poorly in the class. Homeworks will be graded wrong due to an incorrect answer key.
If you are able to, avoid MATH 124 at all costs. Clark is the director for this course and he quite honestly sucks at it. For having a degree in math, he is absolutely clueless. At least 50% of his lectures will contain mistakes made by him, and he often needs to correct his math (because it's always very wrong).
This class was nearly impossible over the summer. I took it to get ahead, but instead ended up right where I was in the spring. Over the summer, we were given videos that weren't even his and he went away for a week so we couldn't ask many questions. I was helpless and failed the class. Do not take this over the summer, save your money and time.
Professor Metz is the best Math 124 teacher at WVU. His lectures are clear, gives good notes/examples, and he will respond to e-mails. A small 5-6 question quiz a week with at least two homework assignments a week. Everyone is bashing him, but I didn't know any math that he was teaching and walked away with an A+, you just have to put the work in.
really funny and cared about his students and made sure we knew everything. amazon person and professor
very clear lectures and a lot of extra credit opportunities
Awful professor. This course is designed for students to fail. A college algebra class should not be one of the most failed classes at WVU.
Great professor. For the most part, the class was pretty slow-paced, and he took his time explaining concepts. Always willing to answer my emails and help me outside of class. I was not a huge fan of the objective-based grading that took place this semester, but that was not his fault.
Although I didn't get a great grade in this class, I'd still take this class again and would take Prof. Metz again. I didn't attend many lectures and had lower than 50% attendance but if you follow his lecture notes and put in the time you will pass. He goes really quick in lectures. Exams are really easy though because he posts instruction videos.
Avoid taking a class with Clark if at all possible. His lectures are messy and often do not make sense. He refuses to help students who are struggling in the class, just telling them to spend more time studying. He assigns numerous HW assignments each week and it is almost impossible to time manage for this course. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
Worst MATH 124 instructor. I highly suggest finding someone else to take this class with.
Clark outwardly is very tough, but genuinely wants students to pass. If you show up to his lectures, ask questions and occasionally go to office hours it makes a world of difference. Asking questions during lecture is a must, as he lectures with great speed and it can be easy to get lost.
Even though Math124 is a really tough class, Clark provides great help for both homework and exam preparation. If you attend class, pay attention, and ask questions, it helps lighten the workload. There is a lot of homework, but you get plenty of time to complete it.
Very kind and easy going
MATH 124 is the worst class I have taken at WVU. Clark's lectures are poor in quality and does not take into consideration the true learning of his students. As a person, Clark is a good person. But in terms of being an instructor, he is not so great.
Metz was very good at explaining the content provided in each lesson. He set up for the exams very well, the homework was useful and informative, and the gateway exams were great for boosting your grade. As long as you put in the effort, you will pass the class. The exams were quite difficult at times, but nothing too hard.
I thought Metz was a good professor and clearly highlighted what was expected from students during the lecture. Overall, I had a positive experience with him and I got over 90s on all of the Math 124 exams. He is fair when it comes to teaching a college class, as it is students responsibility to want to excel
I found Metz to be a really great teacher and is always willing to help if you are having trouble. I thought that the class was engaging and fairly easy to understand. I would take a class taught by him in the future.
Great professor. Very easy class to follow. As long as you do the homework on time and do the practice exams, the class is easy. The information is explained very clearly.
Professor Metz was an incredibly kind, welcoming, and fantastic person for me to meet in my first class on my first day of college! I felt that he went above and beyond for his students, was eager about his job, and truly wished for success. If you are going to take Math-124 I highly recommend requesting Metz's class!
This class is an easy A. Lots of homework, but you can retry questions multiple times until you get it right. He also gives out test prep quizzes that are nearly identical to exams plus you can have a cheat sheet. Only issue was that lectures were very boring and attendance was mandatory.
Could have taught the material better. Little confusing. Good professor. Just be ready to teach yourself some of the content.
Great guy. Took AP Stats in high school, this class is 10x easier, but actually feel I can apply it to real life now. Funny guy who made lectures engaging and interesting. The tests are almost the exact questions as homework, he gives pre-tests which are so helpful. Great dude.
- Great Teacher - $60-$80 online textbook - Can purchase a textbook with all of the PowerPoint slides he will show in class (no more than $20) - Designs homework and exams to be compatible with Desmos calculator. As long as you understand how to use Desmos, you cannot fail.
Class isn't all that hard as long as you show up and listen. Also doing homework and learning Desmos will make the class so much easier.
He is so nice and genuinely wants to make sure everyone passes.
Math 124 is a pretty random math class that doesnt make sense half of the time but this professor really helped me. He is the head of this section, gives you so many tips and tricks to save ur brain power when answering questions, and overall is just awesome. he records his lectures but does do iclicker!
This was a short STAT211 course that I took during a summer program but Metz does a great job teaching the material. He is good at providing time for questions and gives multiple examples for each concept. Exams are important but he does provide some bonus and homework helps to weigh it out.
Dr. Metz is a good teacher and a funny guy, but his exams sometimes have particularly tricky questions. Usually, professors leave the especially difficult questions for homework and do the normal questions on an exam, but I always had to overprepare for his exams because he would put the difficult questions that didn't appear as often in practice.
His class is way too fast paced for a class that has so many random concepts that are crammed into one exam. You have to overachieve in order to just get a C.
Fast paced and homework heavy. The exams are what kill your grade, they're difficult and only comprised of a few questions worth 50% of the exam score. Apply yourself-- prioritize this class and you will be okay, but it is for sure easier said than done. Be prepared for curve ball questions on exams and quizzes.
IMO a lot of professors tend to fall into one of two camps: "dumbing down" of the material to the point that it seems like the prof thinks we're children, or overly difficult and obtuse teaching. Dr. Metz falls into neither camp. His style of teaching is neither boring nor overly difficult. This goes for Stat 211, too. Overall a great prof.
Very good professor also finds ways to make the history of math problems entertaining.
I advise you to take this class over the summer or wait for a different professor. The worst class I've taken. Most people retake. He acts as if this is your one and only class. His exams are actually terrible.
His exams don't have anything to do with the stuff in homework or in class
This was my first ever statistics class and it was decently easy to get an A in. Exams and assignments were very structured and not overly difficult. As long as you actually do the assignments, they prepare you extremely well for the exams and final. Metz was one of my favorite professors this semester and was very easy to work with.
Clark was great! Received a C because I struggle w/ busy work (lots of HW that I did not complete on time--70% credit for late HW). Uses Cengage. Quizzes & exams are harder than HW and lecture examples. Dropps quizzes/HWs based on attendance. Curved us at the end which bumped me 1%. Let us take a hard quiz in "groups" in class for better scores.
It might've just been me, but Professor Metz was just really easy to understand. He made complex calculus equations make sense by taking the time to break things down and answer questions as he went. Would take again
A snooze of a class. I feel like the amount of work given exceeds what is needed to understand the very simple content in this class.
He is a very nice professor who explains the content very well. He gives guided notes that are super helpful. Attendance is mandatory for points. His exams are exactly like the pretests he gives because he takes the questions straight from the pretests. You also get a cheat sheet, front and back, handwritten to take into your exam with you.
Great teacher, gives out the content on a silver platter. Quiz almost every class, but very easy. A couple of practice problems on your own is all you need to study.
His lectures prepare us very well for the quizzes and exams, and he seems to know and understand where each question comes from answers them well. He is very enthusiatic about the content he teaches and his lectures can be very exciting and engaging. Homework is very helpful and manageable.
Dr. Metz is a great professor, he is super helpful and kind. His lectures are always very energetic, clear, and he always does a great job explaining concepts. You do need to pay attention and practice, there are a lot of quizzes and the exams usually have questions from the quizzes/lectures/practice sheets, so paying attention is important.
This was my second time in a course taught by Dr. Metz. He is a great professor and clearly shares a love for math and wants to see us succeed. Even for an online course he was easily accessible for any questions and made great lecture videos, even if some ran long they were all helpful. Notes are clear and the pretests were exactly like the exams.
You should see how this guy emails his students. Rude. Zero respect. Haughty. As if he has little tolerance for those of us struggling with advanced math concepts. Would never recommend taking him. He has no PhD, no patience, and no communication skills.
Pretty lenient, gave options for extra credit on 3/4 of the tests, dropped a few hw assignments.
SO rude, and don't even bother emailing him because he will reply with such a disrespectful tone.
