Dreadful teacher. Entertaining, but difficult to follow, completely unclear in his lecuters. Tests are complicated. Plus, he's super arrogant.
Man is super humble and NEVER touches on his heritage. Sometimes his lectures can be boring, but if you go to him for help he will bend over backwards to help you understand.
Works hard to entertain, but half his jokes fail. Gives all test answers in lectures, take good notes and you won't need the book except for the few terms he doesn't cover. I slept with one eye open and caught all the notes needed for the clear and straightforward tests. Easy A if you stay awake.
He is a good teacher, and all of the test questions he teaches in his lectures. You don't really need to read all of the chapters completely. Make sure you go to the review sessions.
He's a good teacher and covers the concepts very well. He does a miserable job at staying on task... which is often fairly entertaining. His quizzes and some test questions are a little random and hard to prepare for(sometimes on topics that we never address after the quiz!!)
I would recommend a different teacher. Not a fantastic lecturer and not funny enough to make up for it. About 1/4 of the lecture is stuff you acutally need to know for the test. The rest is stories or just pretty much irrelevant talking. Not a tough class though unless the random quizes, that are often not even about geography, get you.
This guy is absolutely ridiculous! Don't make the mistake I made...find another teacher!!
This guy is a crackup. He is so random, and that makes him funny. If you go to class you'll be fine. His lectures are all you need for the test. He pretty much tells you everything you need to memorize. It can be boring, but at least it's not hard.
I struggled in his class because he was fairly disorganized and got off track during his lectures. I never really knew what to expect on his tests and quizzes. Sometimes his questions would ask us to recall what I thought was trivial information. He is a nice man and funny too. I'd say I enjoyed the class but wish my grade was a litttle higher.
I definitely recommend him for Geography 101. If you don't know what to expect on the test, you could... read the review sheet, duh. Class is so easy, plus, Br. Monson is awesome. The stories and jokes give the class a more relaxed atmosphere, it's fun.
Professor Monson is a great teacher! I really enjoyed his lectures--they were always interesting and fun. He is really helpful and wants his students to succeed. He makes review sheets for all the tests. I would definitely recommend this class to anyone and everyone!
Pretty entertaining. Lectures purely slide. Gave study sheets for tests that covered his lectures, but his tests were harder than he made them out to be. Study guides covered about 80% of the material. Make sure you take very detailed notes. Too hard in my opinion for a 101 class.
He is a really boring lecturer but if you can manage to stay awake for at least half the class you can pass easily. I barely read the book, I just used it to find definitions for tests. Overall, really easy class and you get to hear funny stories about President Monson (his dad).
i like the bloody guy. he's super nice and i haven't heard him say more than three words concerning his dad. he seems humble and, if the student cares at all about the class, the class is easy to pass. he offers a lot of help that many don't take and then complain about later.
Not quite as interesting as his 101 class, but still the best option for this class. Review sheets before tests are lifesavers, use them. Overall, it's an easy class as long as you pay attention.
Takes an extremely interesting subject and makes it as dreadfully boring as possible. His monotone voice will lull you to sleep in minutes. Most of the test material is on the review sheets, but he'll take the most trivial, irrelevant information (much like his lectures). An actual test question: What happened to the horses in the movie Twister?
I have a soft spot in my heart for Professor Monson. He is so goofy that it makes the class worth taking. He is humble and an amazing man. Take a class from him. If anything, he'll make you laugh.
This class was so great! At first I thought it was going to be aweful but he made everything really interesting, Has a kinda monotone-like father like son apostle- voice but just like his dad once you get past that what he teaches is really great! plus he organizes it in a way that makes tests way easier (use the study guide)
Prof Monson has improved a lot over the years. The lectures follow the book but it is easier to understand both if you read the book and attend the lecture. Tests are not too bad if you study the study guide and also a bit beyond it. He will usually tell you what you need to know. Hard to stay awake at times but its worth it.
I was not impressed with the instruction at all. Very dull, difficult to connect with the professor, and much too difficult for a 101 class.
He is an really nice guy, and has pretty entertaining but i would suggest NOT taking Book of Mormon from him. He has a hard time getting through the information, and the stuff he does get through isn't helpful. His tests cover random things on the BOM, he assumes everyone grew up in a household where you studied the scriptures every night.
He's alright.
Extremely disorganized. Often late to class. Easily gets on tangents (which often are the most interesting part of class). Grades harsh, expects you to know things not covered in class. Expects you to go on fieldtrips to areas that close durring winter.
This class could have been way better than it was. Dr. Monson is a nice guy, but his voice doesn't change tone and the class is way too hard for a 101 class. Before each test I felt like I knew the information well, but I would get my score back and it would never reflect what I thought I learned, and I wasn't lazy.
Dr. Monson is by far the worst teacher I have ever had! He is boring as all get out and does a horrible job explaining difficult things and a horrible job explaining easy things! Geography of Landforms is such a simple topic, basically geology for Geographers and he went ahead and made it way more complicated than need be! Tests were ridiculous!
Just finished a necessary retake of this course from Dr David James. Trust me-he's who you want to take this from. Dr Monson's lectures are frustrating, and his tests are worse. Never stay enrolled in a class that loses hold of your interest the first day-and this will be one of them.
Professor Monson is a quality instructor. His tests are a cinch if you do the reading or pay attention in class. He teaches clearly and although I guess it's true he's a little monotoned, but not boring. He would make me laugh often. Very Approachable and understanding.
He is kind to international student. His exam was not too hard and not too easy. He doesn't use textbook at all, but it's necessary to understand his teachings (He follows text book). He doesn't put ppt on BB, so you need to take notes carefully. If you study hard, it's no problem with this class.
Rather dull lectures. He should read the textbook more, because he sometimes contradicts or glosses over the concepts. He's nice, but the class was not all that interesting. Somehow, he can make a class about natural disaster dull. I was a little let down.
Dr. Monson is a really cool guy, approachable, and very willing to work with you if you have personal issues. However, lectures were very boring and I wasn't very motivated to attend. At least I had a helpful TA!
Clark Monson is a really cool guy and is very personable. His lessons can be a bit dull, but his quarkiness was half the fun of the class. He is really good at remembering names and getting to know his students. I would take him again.
Prof Monson is one of my favourite profesors. If you arent paying attention he may sound monotone but he has a very clever humour and I spent a lot of time entertained. His tests are easy if you take notes so attendance is v.important. Very enjoyable classes and a highly recommended prof
The only reason why I came to class was to copy the three slides he had up for the day and to giggle ridiculously loud about all his tangents. Seriously, take him if you want an super easy A. Current event due every other week worth 10 pts each, 3 tests worth 50 each. Final was a cut and paste from the previous three tests
Go to class every day to get all of the notes if you don't get the book. Tests can be kind of hard because they are written. Be sure you get accurate notes and do the study guide.
Natural Hazards is one of the best classes I took this semester. The book is rather boring, but Dr. Monson has a ton of funny stories for each section. If you go to class, listen, and copy the slides, the tests are pretty easy.
He is a wonderful teacher. I had to withdraw due to medical reason and he worked with me. He is an fun teacher to listen to. I would take any of his classes. The homework is easily manageable but class is important if you do not read.
Super nice and funny guy. Very helpful and cares about his students. Lecture is frightfully boring, though. I bought the textbook and read it and did better on the tests than I did by taking notes in class. Not difficult or very time consuming, which is nice.
He uses disney in half of his lectures, his witty humor is hilarious, he explains concepts clearly, and he truly cares about his students. Likes to meet personally at least once with every one of his students. 3 field trips required. Tests are easy if you fill out the study guide. Never had to open my textbook once, just go to class
Absolutely love this professor! His explanations are crystal clear, he's super laid back, and he's hilarious. I would take another class from him in a heartbeat!
Excellent professor. Great class. Throughly enjoyed my time. Learned a lot.
Go to class, take good notes and you will do fine. Nice, helpful guy. Funny, enjoyed his lectures. Explanations are clear. You do read every chapter and will be quizzed.
At the beginning of the semester, he said we could still pull an A without the book, so I returned my book. There were a few questions on the exam I didn't know, but as I head into finals, I have an A. But you must attend all classes and review your notes often. Great class. Learned interesting stuff. Dr. Monson is awesome.
In 101, Monson saves the hard chapters for the final, but all the midterms are pretty easy material. My only complaint is that the disorganization leads to lecture-cramming in class and confusion around test time.
Very clear, moves at a comfortable pace.
Excellent teacher! Very down to earth and Knowledgeable. Made Class Fun and Interesting. Very clear of material needed to know for exams. Highly Recommended. Great course.
Lots of memorization. Concepts aren't hard you just have to memorize.
DO NOT take this class during the spring/summer terms. For a 101 class, it's really difficult because you have SO much material to cover in such a short time. Go to class and take tons of notes because most of his exams are written (as in not multiple choice and you have to explain everything word for word). He gets side tracked easily. Great guy!
Clark Monson is the man! His lectures can sometimes be dull, but if you take notes, you will stay awake and get an A. I didn't study the textbook as much as I should have. Don't make the same mistake. His tests are pretty much what he goes over in class, but the book is where all the info comes from. Nicest guy in the world, also super funny.
I absolutely loved taking classes from Prof. Monson and plan on taking more. Everything on the test is covered in class, the book is not necessary but is a great supplement. Very entertaining
Professor Monson is a great teacher. He really knows the material that is being taught. I used the textbook to review the material in 101 but you could get along fine without the textbook as long as you go to class every day and take notes on the slides. Tests are mostly short answer and 2 field trips are required.
He is a very good teacher, cares about his students, and is often pretty funny. There really is hardly anything negative to say here, however, occasionally on the tests there is material that we hardly or did not go over in class, and therefore it is hard to know exactly what he expects on a short answer question. Go to class because of pop quiz.
The chapters are long and very in depth but after a quiz or two, you'll know what to expect and what to look for.
Professor Monson is a great professor. He gets to know all his students. I would highly recommend taking 101 and 110 at the same time. That makes it easier because you learn a lot of the same stuff in both classes. Sometimes Prof. Monson tells stories and he is easily distracted but it's more endearing than annoying. Overall great!
Professor Monson is very easy-going and just a good person. Class can be a bit dry sometimes but he tries to keep things entertaining. Tests are based off of class slides mostly--just use those and the study guides he gives you for the tests and you'll do just fine. Textbook can be used as just a reference.
I've taken 3 classes from Dr. Monson (101,110,304). I really love him as a professor, but I had a lot of trouble with his tests. There's a group term paper and presentation, but you have all semester to work on it and it's only 8-10 pages. Definitely doable, but requires some effort.
Professor Monson is helpful, caring, and can be funny.
Professor Monson is really kind and is knowledgeable in his field. He is typically pretty funny and he knows you by name. There is a lot you cover in class, especially the textbook but if you follow the study guides for his tests, you'll do pretty well on exams.
Great guy. Tests are lecture heavy and I found that the study guides were a little vague but it was a great class. Easy if you follow directions, little rough if you don't. He really knows what he's talking about and really does want you to succeed. I really enjoyed the class. Dressed up as "Arrow" for Halloween.
This class was pretty interesting, if you're into learning about natural disasters. Homework is minimal and easy. Tests are easy if you go to class - they are pretty much exactly what was covered on his slides, and on the test review. I never read the textbook.
Professor Monson is a very nice person, but not the best teacher. He reads directly from the powerpoints, and his tests do not always reflect things that you've learned in class. There is definitely outside learning to be had but if you don't go to the test reviews, you will not pass the tests or the class. He also doesn't respond well to emails.
Professor Monson was a great teacher overall. His material was straightforward and interesting. The tests come straight from the lectures and videos from class. His assignments are few and fairly easy. I only needed help from the TA a couple times. quite a bit of memorizing. interesting field trips .
If you miss class you won't pass, the assignments and exams are based heavily on the lectures, few assignments during the semester, so your grade will pretty much depend on your perfomance in the exams. Its hard to have a response through email and there are two mandatory field trips. Overall he is a good teacher but the class is way too difficult
Dr. Monson is a great guy! He really cares about you and really knows his stuff. His tests are fairly easy if you study but you have to memorize a bunch of stuff! Do the reviews he sends out, go to the TA reviews, and memorize what he tells you to and you're good. He also doesn't post slides online and his tests are all lecture so GO TO CLASS!
The class is super interesting. His lectures contain a lot of information that isn't in the reading in the textbook. It's really cool though. You are tested on what is in the lectures, not the textbook. The quizzes happen before the lectures, so you have to read the chapters before class. He's really funny and puts memes in his lecture slides.
Professor Monson was my favorite professor this semester. I hope to take as many classes as I can from him! I never used the textbook, all of the tests are based on the in-class lectures so don't miss class, and if you do make sure you can get notes from someone. 4 easy assignments, 4 tests, and 2 field trips. Loved this class, would take again
Good power points and his lectures aren't boring. Most of the test material is from lecture, not the textbook. Just make sure to take really good notes on lecture because after going to the TA review, honestly EVERYTHING he talks about in class is important to know for the test.
Professor Monson is hilarious and a fun professor. This class was pretty easy as long as you are going to class, taking notes on his powerpoints and you go to the TA review for the tests.
Monson is fantastic, very forgiving and tells amazing stories. The class is very lecture heavy and the grades are mostly weighted by weekly quizzes that focus on the readings and on the powerpoint slides. If you put in a decent amount of effort the class is pretty easy.
Good class, but kind of boring. It is 4 credits but really, it should be 3 or even 2. I never read the textbook (which was long and confusing) and did well. Go in to the TA for help on the assignments and go to the review sessions. Tests are straightforward from the lectures and study guide if you can remember it all (which was not too hard).
Dr. Monson is a solid choice for Environmental Geography - he definitely has his own brand of humor and you'll enjoy it. The exams are based entirely on lecture material (no book) so don't miss class. The only downside is he expects you to practically memorize all the in-class material for the test - your saving grace will be going to TA reviews!
Dr. Monson is one of my favorites. He cares about his students and his tests align well with the material that you study. I did the readings as best as I could and it was not too bad. I hate readings, but I really did not mind the readings for this class. I did not really stress about this class because he prepared us well.
Professor Monson is one of the best professors I've ever had. I wasn't super excited about this class because it's not really my thing, but he is so hilarious, and he explains things very clearly. Even subjects I've struggled with in the past made sense when he taught it. If you need geography credit, take it from him!!!
You'd be wise to take a class from Prof Monson. It's like taking geography from Thomas S Monson (his father). He's well spoken, sets clear expectations and has a ton of awesome and interesting insight. Pay attention and you will do well. DO NOT SKIP CLASS.
Very much liked Professor Monsons' classes. He was actually my professor for two classes at once- GEOG 110 and 101. He taught very clearly and I learned much. Thank you Professor Monson.
Dr. Monson was really funny and nice. You can tell he's really passionate about what he teaches. Almost nothing is on learning suite, which was a little frustrating. The TA reviews really helped me study for the test. Geography's not my thing, so the class got boring after a while, but that's a reflection of the subject rather than Dr. Monson
He's a nice guy, but I didn't love his class. He was vague, and he switched due dates a lot. For the quizzes, you have to read the chapters closely, as the questions are specific, and there are only 5. And I don't know if this was a fluke, but the 2 times that I tried emailing him he didn't respond. *Finished this class online due to Covid19
It seemed very unorganized and like the professor didn't care at all about the state of his class or students. He no showed the class on the first day and then a day later sent an email saying we were on our own basically. He wouldn't teach class or hold zoom meetings to cover the content. This was the worst class I've taken in college yet.
I'm sure Professor Monson is funny and a better teacher in person, but online, he seemed unorganized and distant. Our grades were based on four tests and two assignments. The tests were open book, but I feel like I didn't actually learn the material. The most I learned this term was from the TA over four quick review sessions before tests.
Prof Monson had interesting powerpoints but the tests were so poorly prepared it astounded me. They were open book but the time limit was so short you couldn't possibly finish even if you knew every answer immediately. The tests had 45 questions, 25 of which were short answer and he gives you 40 minutes to take it. I never came close to finishing.
Professor Monson is fantastic! He gives great lectures, does a good job remembering your name. He's not the greatest with online classes but if you can take an in-person class from him I would highly recommend it. He makes learning enjoyable and doesn't assign a bunch of busy work. (I took 110, 101, 211, and 280 from him.)
He's good. Lectures are pretty boring, but the tests are open-note open-book, so pretty easy. There's a few homework assignments and they're all easy to do. If you're looking for an easy-A minimal effort kinda guy, Dr. Monson is the guy for you. Don't get me wrong, he actually does teach and he knows the material well.
Good teacher! I took this class as an online class and he prerecorded the lectures and we watched them. Exams were open note and book so that was nice! The textbook quizzes were not open note and they were very specific so make sure you read everything in the textbook! Be prepared to read!!! If you put in work you will be fine.
All. Memorization. Makes you memorize things that seem so insignificant. Hated the class. Monson's a really nice guy, super considerate, but would rather hit myself in the head with a brick repeatedly than ever take this class again.
This class was a lot harder than it had to be because it was just memorization. Professor Monson is a very nice person but his teaching style was just lecturing for an hour and asking obscure questions on his tests from things that he mentioned in class. I would not recommend taking this class unless it's needed for your major.
I've taken four of Prof. Monson's classes and he is sub par every time. There is no clear grading criteria and he is inaccessible outside of class. If you are just trying to get through a course, go for it, but he is not an outstanding professor. Its not hard to be in the A- range in his classes, but his tests are super random so be ultra prepared.
I guess I could blame COVID? The class was supposed to be "live-delivery." Well, apparently he couldn't figure out Zoom, or didn't want to? We got a few random recorded lectures that were mostly off topic. He forgot to have the TA post a few of them before one of our midterms, too, so there was material on the test we didn't know. I could go on.
By far probably the worst class/professor I've had. I'm a geography major, so I've taken two other required courses from him and all of these classes have been such a pain. Boring lectures, rambles on and on. He's a great guy, but has lost the motivation to teach well. Not proficient in tech, so nothing is on LS and has physical worksheets to do.
All his lectures are from 15 year old powerpoints complete with outdated information. You will also probably never use this information again unless you are planning on studying ecology or geology. To bad its a required class for Geography majors! He is also completely unable to use tech in any meaningful way. His tests are incredibly nit picky.
This class is quite easy for a 3 credit and there's very little homework. The tests were somewhat challenging and require a lot of memorization but if you study they're very doable. He tells a lot of stories and is super funny. Attendance is extremely important and make sure you take good notes.
Professor Monson cares takes the time to learn every student's name which shows that he cares. There are a lot of quizzes, and my main complaint with these was that for each 3-question quiz, there were about 30 pages of reading. There are also written papers due biweekly, but those are only about a paragraph.
2ND class I have taken from Dr. Monson and I am still unimpressed. He is always sidetracked, always behind, the tests are beyond difficult, he is impossible to get ahold of, and he doesn't answer your questions. I am disappointed that an entry level Geography class was so ridiculously hard. I know this class caused many people to quit the major.
His slides area bit outdated and he's bad with technology, but he cares about his students/subject. I never had to read the book, and he only gave 3 assignments and 4 tests outside of class. If you show up to class and take notes, do the assignments, and study a day or two before the class, you should be able to get an A or A-.
I've taken 101, 110 & 211 from Professor Monson and I loved them all! I honestly wish all of my classes were taught by him. His teaching style is very simple and organized. Everything you need to know will be taught to you in class. Just write down everything from the lecture slides and study that for the tests. He's by far my favorite professor.
Great class but an even better professor. Dr. Monson takes the time to know you and cares about you. He offers plenty of extra credit opportunities that are actually really fun (like field trips)! If you go to class and take notes, you will get an A. That's all there is to it. His lectures are exactly what is on the tests. 100% would take again.
The tests are really hard, and his lectures are very long. This is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken and by the end I no longer wanted to pursue geography.
I like Monson, but this class was harder. The class is outdated and really probably shouldn't be taught anymore. The homework is rare and its not hard, the tests are not simple, he'll give a study guide but there will be things on the test that aren't study guides. Just study and read the textbook really well, I didn't pay attention to the lectures
Go to class & take notes on everything says. He can test you on anything. DONT NEED TO BUY TEXTBOOK. Just pay attention to the lectures. If you're good at memorizing & studying, the tests arent too bad. Go to his office hours if u need help on the assignments! He's a good teacher but does go on lots of tangents. Grade is just tests & assignments
Clark Monson is an inept teacher that will easily become sidetracked during class. His lectures are extremely boring and he will never opt for student participation during class-time. He is a nice guy but I recommend any other teacher if you are interested in learning about Geography.
Very mixed feelings. He is such a funny guy, in a very dry sense of humor sort of way. You can tell he just wants to have fun, but his teachings are wayyyyy outdated and the tests are basically the only grades you'll get besides like 4 homeworks. He only lectures with powerpoint and the exams are really tough, with a ton of obscure questions
Dr. Monson is a nice guy, but he wasn't a great student himself in college so he cares very little about the grade you receive. Those tests are insanely specific; he can quizz you on anything he says in his lectures so pay close attention. The class has very few assignments and no opportunities for makeup or extra credit.
He's a great teacher, but he gets off topic so much. His lectures are for the whole class, and you are graded purely on tests. There are very few assignments or homework. He gives you a study guide for each test. He is super understanding to students whose first language is not English. Study for tests a lot and you'll do fine.
He's a likeable professor but gets sidetracked and off-topic pretty easily. You can tell he's close to retirement and is sometimes just going through the motions. Besides that, his lectures are informative and interesting. The tests are the main focus, with very few assignments. Textbook is not necessary, as the tests reflect the lectures.
Is super easy to get off track and I was annoyed at first. However, I learned his teaching style and appreciated that he teaches you what you need to know. Tests are very detailed and make sure you study that stupid climate sheet he passes out for the 2nd test.I would take another class from him, for sure. ASK the TAs for Help on HOMEWORK!
Professor Monson's class can be tricky, but using tools like unstuckstudy alongside the lectures and textbook can really help. Stay engaged, take good notes, and you'll be set to ace the exams despite the heavy memorization.
Prof. Monson's class is clear and organized with 4 tests—lowest score dropped, including the final. Don't underestimate them—they're tough. Some quizzes and assignments as well. Lectures are key, so pay close attention. The textbook isn't required. A good TA makes a big difference. Monson's passionate and genuinely loves what he teaches.
He teaches as if he is reminding you about the material, rather than being exposed to it for the first time. He is willing to answer questions, but he always goes on long rants that most of the time miss the point of the question. I took the Thursday night class that was almost 3 hours long and it was brutal at times. The TA is nice and helpful.
He's really kind and tells fun stories, but the class is aged and less relevant. A lot of the material feels very introductory for a 200-level class and is covered in many of the other geography classes. Nice guy, but the class itself feels like a waste of time. It's a 3-credit class, we met twice a week, and often the lectures ended early.
