Easy class, helpful teacher for those who need help, the concepts are simple to understand. Had no problems with it at all. I'll admit that can't speak for others though.
It is very unclear what this professor expects in his classroom. Lectures are very boring and hard to follow. Assigned papers are never clearly explained, so it's hard to know what to do for a good grade.

This man is nuts!! OK, it is a philosophy class, but his expectations are absurd. As for his essay's...forget anything you knew about writing and follow his absurd format (and pray).
very confusing...dropped and took loofburrow
he's not clear in his presentations
Not a very good teacher. He is very opinionated and if you try to contest your beliefs, he will tell you that you are wrong or that its "Not the main point." Furthermore he will in about 5 minutes say the exact same thing you said and say that is what is correct.
Very helpful, as long as your mind can grasp logic in the first place. He can't help you if you can't think.
it was so easy class. we have to turn in two papers, midterm and final. he is very easy going.
The previous opinions have left me infuriated! WHAT INJUSTICE Prof. Gratton is a very reserved, educated, and understanding teacher. He will take you as far as you want to go. Prof. Gratton is a very respectable man. If you are looking for an example of how to be remarkably wise without a trace of arrogance then register for Prof. Grattons' courses
brain tickler! not for the un interested student, if you pay attention and participate chances are youll do good

zzzzzzzzzzzz.........dont by book
ITS A VERY HARD CLASS GOOD LUCK....
He acts as if he's out of the real world. No understanding of people (students) and their problems. Non caring, self-centered, angry maybe, disappointed in his life.
i thought he was great! the topics in class were interesting, there were only two tests and two short papers. he has examples of papers on his website and as long as you follow those you'll get a good grade. i got an A in the class!
He's alittle hard to understand at first but after you get used to it he's a pretty good professor
I took him and had to drop it, I could not understand what he was trying to teach
he is a really hard teacher and is a little hard to understand. If you can't understand what he is saying then go to him otherwise u will definatel get lost.
Awesome instructor. It's entirely possible to get an A. That is, if your not dumb and actually put forth some effort.
A+ Teacher. One of the best at AVC. Getting an A is not easy, but it's definitly possible. What was my grade you ask? an A :-D
I thought he was boring in the way he taught the class and he didnt make it interesting at all.
Really interesting man but only if you have an odd sense of humor (which I do). I still can't tell if his ideas are off the wall or if I just don't get Philosophy. I can't really say I learned anything, and I was baffled most of the time . . . but somehow I pulled off a B.
This class is HARD! But Gratton REALLY cares for students to grasp the material. He's pretty monotone, and speaks super sloooow. But he tries to clarify the difficult concepts as best as he can. He's extremely passionate about philosophy. And he pushes his students to reach their intellectual potential. I admire him for that. GO TO OFFICE HOURS!!!!
not good

This class is one of the most helpful and useful courses I have taken thus far. It challenges you to think at a higher level, but is well worth the effort. He is a very helpful teacher. DO NOT be afraid to ask questions. He is very accomodating as well.
Great Professor! Does what a professor should do; open and expand your mind to new things and let you properly analyze old beliefs. Recommend to anyone who actually wants to think critically! His homework is time consuming, but worthwhile to expand the mind. Has thinking logs, 3 exams, excerpts to read. Worth it! Highly Recommend!
The principles are difficult to grasp at times, but now I feel that I've learned so much. He's a really good teacher. He'll spend the time on everyones issues and he addresses everything. Don't be scared away by the concepts. You should take this class. It really does change the way you think.
Mr. Gratton is very opinionated, very. And what he views as right he does not sway on, unless you walk him through your thought, and then maybe he will change. The course is simple, boring 80% of the time, and above all he only really reads the stuff he puts on blackboard, word for word for word. Unfortunately not going to class is kinda a plus.
Gratton is boring, thats my preception. He simply reads word for word the stuff online, and then yammers on for 45 min. The quizes are ok, but when the actual learning of new stuff is done outside of class, how good can it be?
Dr. Gratton is a very intelligent person. His course covers a lot of material which can be difficult at times but he is always willing to help his students. His Critical Thinking course challenges the students and proves to be very beneficial in and outside of the classroom. Highly recommended.
Not Recommended.
Take someone else. He makes the simplest concept into a complicated idea. His explanations dont really explain anything, they just help confuse you even more. Quizzes are online, and there's a 3-4 page paper on a one sentence quote or phrase, which everyone fails. Lecture is boring and confusing. Don't recommend.
Very intelligent man, but expects you to do University level work. If you don't put in the effort you can't pass the class.
Brilliant man, confusing class. Lecture all class long but actual work (besides final) done all outside of class and online. really knows what he is talking about, even if we have no clue what we are hearing... If you take the class, get ready for a serious mental workout.
It seems that many of these comments come from students who want to take it "easy." Sure, if you would like to waste money on taking it easy and learning nothing from your classes, then I would recommend someone else. Otherwise, Dr. Gratton is a great teacher. His classes are challenging, but well worth it; beneficial academically and personally.
Okay....REALLY??? I would not recommend this class to anyone. This professor is the most confusing man ever. I still don't understand what the point of philosophy is... This was the only class ever where I actually didn't understand the material. I DROPPED IT.
Hard class, but if you ask Claude will take as much time as needed to explain it to you until you get it. No book, show up whenever you want and get to see his sexy legs in shorts all summer long!
Awesome professor! Highly recommended for those with a passion for learning beyond the textbook.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING, He is the only philosophy 101 teacher though -_-
I really love logic and am good at critical thinking, but this class made me kinda hate it. He just rambles on about maybe 3 of the homework questions for the whole lecture time and makes everything so much more confusing than it needs to be.If i wasnt so busy staying on top of the ridiculous homework, i could have organized the info and taught it
Fantastic class. Quite honestly if you don't understand the class after taking it you probably have been in a coma your whole life. All you have to do is participate/pay attention. Do the assignments/reading and really just show up. If you engage your mind a little it should not be a problem.
Professor Gratton, I felt his class was a waste of time, its taking logic and and twisting it around, like a mad man. Too much reading if you have other classes, he strings you along just to fail you. Its all a game. He does;t teach he babbles, it his way or no way and you will FAIL. I am a worker and take all classes seriously. RUN, RUN, RUN
I hated the class and somehow I got an A. DOOOONT CAAAARE
BEWARE. This is one of those professors that are out there to fail you. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
This is the hardest class you will ever take. This is no class for slackers. You'll see this class full the first day and by the last day there will be three people and only one of those is going to pass.
He takes the very difficult subject of critical thinking, and gives you a lot of practice with on-line quizzes that count toward your grade. An adage paper, and in class tests. Office hours are VERY beneficial. He cares for his students, but expects you to work. Come prepared to work. Loved the class! Very Challenging, not a skate course.
First day of class, he doesn't even introduce himself, writes a paragraph on the board and says "evaluate it" WHAT THE HELL?! How? Turns out there's a technique that involves putting brackets and numbers all over the place. How about you teach us HOW to do that instead of making us feel like we missed 2 weeks of class.
Woah first day of class and he expects u to already get the freaking material. Unbelievable.. I cant believe this is the only teacher teaching this at avc..
Arrogant and smug, he is a legend in his own mind. He gave me a good grade, but that doesn't mean I learned anything.
Not good at all.. He is probably the hardest teacher you can ever take. he expects u to already know the material so its all very hard to follow along. I barely had him for a couple days too. Not Recommended...
**RUN**!!! I am an A-B student and I work hard for my grades, BUT this is the ONLY class I ever had to drop. There is no book to follow along. I was completely lost. His explanations are so confusing. I tried for a month to follow and I never missed a class, yet I still failed all his online tests and the first test even though I studied. Ick.
He is super confussing and I could not bear to be in his class room
Gratton lacks knowledge when it comes to clarity. This has been by far my least favorite professor. many people dropped his class and only a few are left and those left are mostly failing,
This class was alright. The lectures were so boring but I recommend taking a lot of notes. It will help you review for the test. We did not use the textbook at all. It was hard to understand him only because he always presents two sides of an argument. His grading is fair and he curves!
He definitely knows his stuff but its easy to get lost.Ask plenty of questions and submit papers in early to get better final grades.DO NOT fall behind on work or you will not catch up.It helps to read the online lessons before hand. Only take this class if you can give it your full attention.Take 101 before 201 for a better understanding.
This class is extremely difficult. I have never failed a class until I took this one. Do yourself a favor and take 102, it counts as the same credit.
It is an intresting class but he give's a lot of hard work. In addition to wanting philsophy 201 to be your life, because it is his.
WOAH! Pretty insane. Its a lot of work. I think it may be possible to pass if you work hard from start to finish(maybe). His logic is set in stone. If you don't think exactly as he wants you to, you WILL fail. Do not fall behind. Or better yet don't take this course. Quizes online for EVERY class, He wont remind you till the end so do them early
Prof. Gratton is one of the hardest professors I have ever seen in AVC. His lectures seem uninspired and even when asking for clarification, you'll end up more confused than you were before you asked. If you can help it, take a class from another instructor. If not, then good luck, you'll need it.
I dreaded going to this class, it was soooo boring. The ONLY class I have ever dropped in my life. It is like an online class, you have to remind yourself to do all the homework, quizzes and tests online. Going to class seemed like a waste of time. I did not learn about philosophy.
He is a tough teacher. First day he actually showed the statistic for how many people get A's to F's, the F's were a lot higher. He has NO clarity and can't explain himself well at all. He is a terrible teacher and you have to think like him, work very hard and maybe you'll pass.
Took him for Critical Thinking. REFUSE to take his class again. I got a D and absolutely will not take his class again to attempt a better grade. He is so delusional and confusing. Impossible to grasp the subject based off his teachings. Very unclear on what he expects from homework. Worst class i've taken.
nice man, but his class is extremely hard for a phil101 class. i had other friends in 101 classes and they had no idea of what my teacher was teaching. if you miss class even once you will be lost. quizzes are online and must be done before every class. i wouldnt take him again, just because i didnt ever catch on with the way the taught.
Really nice guy. He will work with you and he also understands the class is difficult so doesn't mind if you ask questions so you can catch up. I would take this class again.
ok to everyone that said he takes time to help you, you were in the wrong class because he will only repeat the same thing he just said and will confuse you more, horrible long and boring lectures, if i didnt have only 11 credits this semester i would have dropped the second day and already regretting not leaving
Also had him for 101. Hes one of the reasons I'm switching my major to philosophy. The class is hard, but if you have average mental functions it is passable with some work. Very cool dude with a good sense of humor, and most importantly very passionate about the subject.
Very difficult class but worth it. Changes your perspective on how you look at things. Especially the book, makes you analyze yourself in life.
I had a very hard time in his class because he was unclear about what we are supposed to do. Effort means nothing to him when it comes to grading things. He is a very tough grader and will give you a hard time if you don't understand the material.
i actually took him twice. I know sounds crazy but to be honest i didnt make to much effort the first time i took this class but the second time around i had a better mind set and was determined to work my butt off. He is actually a helpfull teacher and alot of things may sound confusing at first but it all starts to click in the end
His class was a challenge.Wasnt an easy grade, but I wouldnt have had it any other way. Many dropped his class because they were too narrow or shallow minded to stop and listen to the material. This class you cannot skate by in. It requires effort.I really enjoyed his humor.Would recommend, but be willing to make the effort.Do the work and youll pass.
Really nice guy, definitely is a challenge but if you put the effort in you will definitely get a lot out of this class. all of his reading materials are online and free on blackboard. if he sees that your critical thinking skills have improved then you will most likely pass the class, go to his office hours as much as possible! i wish i would've
I was really looking forward to this class in the beginning of the semester but I soon realized that professor Gratton is one of those professors who don't care weather you pass his class. When I would speak to him after class he would make me feel dumb. I would recommend that you take Philosophy with a different professor.
I absolutely loved this class!! Definitely challenging, so if your lazy, and not mentally ready to critically analyze subject matter then don't take the class. but overall this class really changed my life, and perspective after I applied what I learned from it. recommend for everyone to take, its needed. Oh and the professor is cute ;)
Professor Gratton, was one of the toughest instructors that I have had. He explains, reads, and has many power point slides. However there is work that he wants you to do before class, and readings are also included. It's important to read, take quizzes, take notes, and ask questions if you want to pass. Somehow in the end of the semester I passed.
Prof Gratton is a great guy but a confusing teacher. He expects much of you, sometimes more than you may be willing to give. Online tests every week. Missed class a couple of times and was fine but wouldn't recommend doing that often. Do not take this class if you are not prepared to critically think about confusing subject matter.
This course is philosophy of argumentation under the guise of philosophy of ethics. All of the materials (an obscene amount of reading) in the course are written and prepared by him - if he wants to produce the material it should go through an editor. We started with a full class and at the end of the semester there were 7 of us. Too much busy work
I was so excited to take Phil 101 & learn about all the great philosophers through time etc. However upon day 2 & a quick scan of the syllabus I was very disheartened. This is a philosophy of ARGUMENTATION class not Ethics & now I can not drop & feel sorely mislead. doesnt clarify, his material is no better, boring, crazy tough even with reading.
Horrible mistake. The workload is way too heavy for a 101 class. Me & Almost half of the class dropped the 1st 2 weeks because the WL or his LACK OF CLARITY. He's funny & Though hes there if you need help, he expects us to read/reread/do the topics as if we can automatically understand it all on our own without any helpJust take someone else. :l
Reading was required in order to understand the concepts he is explaining. If you don't read, you won't understand, thus resulting in the student constantly charging his knowledge and asking the "well what if.. But why.. How..?" He teaches at a higher level, so if you're not prepared to be challenged, I'd say don't take this professor.
Hardest class ever. lets put it that way: he will complicate whats simple, he will lose you. Only one test at the end, you have to attend, no text book, he takes long pauses looking at the white board thinking, he makes alot of mistakes and we correct him, he doesnt explain clearly at all, requires ton of homework for a 3 unit class.
Not a 101 beginners course. The professor uses his own self written textbook which is written in the same manner he speaks. He utilizes terms related to Philosophy constantly but are defined differently depending on his analysis which makes it difficult to keep up. His class is more of a PHIL 110. Readings are about 50+pages per day of instruction
The "textbook" is provided for free, but you will need to read it and MASTER it. Even if you are a good at debating, this course requires you to think a certain way and apply what you read. This is not as easy as it first appears, and you must start early or else you will be hurrying to study before the final test.
Very confusing class, sadly had to drop out.
Too difficult to understand for a 100 level class. Doesn't really work with students. He's a really tough grader, and it's hard to tell what he wants from the work you turn in.
Dr. Gratton is a good professor. This is not your typical class and it is a good change of pace if you like a challenge. They do not do much teaching during the lecture though. Lectures mostly consist of applying what you should have taught yourself through the assigned homework. If you put in the effort to learn on your own, you will learn a lot.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I'm a straight A student. Teacher is stuck in his own world. The answers are subjective not objective. He cannot explain why not to do something; he just tells you that you will go to hell if you do it. Yes, that is verbatim. He does not check his quizzes and tests for errors. He says its the students responsibility.
Professor Gratton is a decent teacher, whose jokes keep you from going totally insane in his class. However his class is extremely difficult, and very labor intensive. Any reading is a must, and there is lots of it to be had. Tests and Quizzes are had online on Sundays, and sometimes there can be two topics to be quizzed on at weeks end. Very hard
there is no way that you would know what this professor wants you to learn in this class. most of the class is arguing for the sake of arguing to the point that he will lose you. you will not know what is required from you for the test or the class overall. long pauses and very heavy work for a 101 class which should be introductory to philosophy.
This professor makes no sense. It's like he is teaching some weird form of grammar class. He writes all the material himself so if you don't understand, it doesn't help at all. He is a nice person but not a very good teacher. I would not take another class with him.
never seen so many students drop a course before, started like with 30 something, now less than 12 ,I should have wised up, most of the class, he writes on board, but his writing is so bad, I have to strain my eyes to try to make out a single word, so bad, so hard to follow , hard to learn, ITS JUST BAD. DON'T TAKE, one student to another, I care
IF YOU WANT YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE TO BE STRESSFUL, TAKE THIS CLASS, if not, TAKE ANOTHER CLASS! I DO NOT recommend this to any first year student, it will STRESS YOU, and yes you will meet some teachers good, some difficult, but this one top it for me, EXTREMELY DIFFICULT, I stressed out more in this course more than the rest of my courses.
SO much paperwork & so much reading for one single class. On top of the professor being sort of disorganized & hard to hear, theres A LOT of detail vocabulary to memorize. If youre not readily skilled in English, dont even bother taking this class. Expect to deal with things like claims, qualifiers, causes of claims, indicators, statements. etc.
Gratton's work is thorough, so he encourages students to solo review often. No textbook, but there're Canvas documents; sure, they're hella lengthy, but the quizzes are more worth practicing to prepare for the exams. DON'T slack off; you won't catch up with him otherwise. He's very patient in office hours and can make some intriguing lectures.
Professor Gratton's Philosophy 105 class was my peer's #1 most dropped class in 2019. Almost every student dropped out of his class due to the lack of understanding of the material. He is easily accessible outside of the classroom and I would highly recommend going to his office hours especially prior to when the final paper is due.
Kind&smart but VERY challenging;1-3 practice quizzes for 40-80 pgs + exam/wk. no tutors are available who know his procedure for hw so communicate w/him freq. to get help Stressful if u have other classes & cant put in lots of time cuz finals are NOT B&W answers u HAVE to KNOW how to apply concepts, hardest class for me by far 1 Paper 4 Part Final
This class is like no other, the quizzes are reasonable and the test can be challenging. He is a great person, but the class can get confusing. Beware of the finals and make sure you ask a lot of questions before the final.
Simplifying this due to the character limit. 1st day of class he started 10 minutes earlier and did not introduce himself, he read his material like we understood this. His notes are packed together and he changes subjects quickly. Don't take this class unless it's you're only class because you're going to be reading a lot of notes after class.
By the end of the semester only 5 students remained. Grades absolutely heavy. Tests every week and Quiz every week with no breaks. One time had 4 quizzes and 4 tests on different topics due in one week w/out reading included. Do not recommend, do not take. Save yourself.
Writing this for people who are taking PHIL110 because of a CS MAJOR. He uses his own curriculum which is unorganized and hard to understand and learn multiple concepts in one lecture. Expect to read his hard to read notes for hours after the session because you'll need it to pass his multiple quizzes and tests every weekend. Please save yourself
Nothing made sense. He expects you to read pages and pages of his notes before every class and none of it makes sense. It's as if he expects you to know all the terms even if you know nothing about philosophy. He's a chill person but I didn't understand anything in the lectures.
Save yourself the stress & find someone eles for Philosophy; Accounting is easier than his class. Youll thank me later. Im back in class post covid(F2F) I asked several students after class on different occasions "do they understand the matieral?" 6 people all gave the same reply on 5 different occasions. they all said "idk what hes talking about"
Dropped the first week, Professor made his own textbook that you are required to know each week. Just goes over the work doesnt even lecture expects you to know everything each class. Was a in-person/zoom class couldnt even get zoom first day, didnt go over syllables started going over the work expecting you to know the text he made up. 0/5
Very nice man, but I had a very hard time with his class. Extremely difficult and wordy weekly tests (two chapters at a time, generally) that seem near-impossible to pass. A confusing, unorganized, stressful, and motivation-killing class that I decided to drop. I wish I had read this website before enrolling in the class because I wasted money.
This course was definitely challenging. I was close to dropping but he motivated me to stay. I thought I wouldnt pass but I pulled through. Get ready to read his notes on every topic. 2 quizzes and tests every week. I would find his lectures to be unclear sometimes but then would understand if I really focused and asked questions.
I took his class fall semester of 2021 and eventually had to drop out because I wasn’t understanding his class, overall I strongly recommend taking another philosophy teacher for the sake of actually understanding the class, if you do end up taking him. Get ready for the reading!! Lots of reading! He is indeed a nice man it’s just his teaching
Do not take this class please I am saving you the time, I really don't know how people can take a class like this I am not sure if it is the professor, the material, or SLO's but I had a horrible time in this class. There is a quiz and a test every week, lengthy reads that don't make sense, asking for further explanations when lost made it worse.
No textbook required because he has his own through modules which is difficult to understand. His lectures never match what he wants you to know for tests. About 2 quizzes AND 2 tests per week. No paper. Philosophy is hard in general, but he makes it impossible to even just grasp it.
The worst class I have ever taken. He does allow unlimited attempts for the quizzes. SOOOO much reading! This class was very difficult and would not recommend it if you want to be very stressed out!
The course is highly challenging because of the sheer confusion caused by the course material. There is no textbook. The descriptions of the material are wordy and confusing. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE A LARGE AND CONSISTENT PORTION OF TIME DURING THE WEEK.
Professor Gratton is very interested in the topics he teaches, but it is difficult to understand the material. He supplies a compilation of pages and pages of information that is difficult to interpret. The lectures are difficult to follow, and while he encourages participation, it is difficult to participate without understanding the material.
Professor Gratton's Logic class was very rigorous. His love for good reasoning and his upbeat style are great. The course itself is very tough, though.
Terrible professor, would never take him again. If anyone is going into the nursing program and needs this class Do Not take him, anyone but him. When you ask him a question he does not answer it directly. Instead he goes in circles and gets you confused.
Doesn't answer questions with real answers he just makes you more confused and refers back to canvas and seems like he doesn't understand his own lectures sometimes with him changing things on spot would not take again with him
Genuinely the worst class I've ever taken, and he answers questions with questions that apply to the current subject. The problem with that is, I'm asking a question because I don't understand, then you answer with a question on something that I already don't understand. He's not a bad person, and he's very passionate, but very hard class.
this was my second time taking his class, his lectures can be difficult to understand and his answers to question make it more confusing. he has an online “textbook” that i believe he wrote and it's very unorganized and difficult to read and understand.
Professor Gratton's logic class is challenging, but engaging. Lots of reading and quizzes, but using unstuck AI alongside the course materials can really help with study prep.
This was the most difficult professor I've taken to date, and I'd recommend against taking his class. He uses his own book which is unclear and all over the place, and they're very long (200+ pages per week). Plus 2 quizzes (unlimited takes) and 2 tests every week. The professor tells you to go back and read if you ask for help. (Will not help)
I do not understand the negative reviews. It wasn't that hard.
if you prefer clear explanations, this isn't the class for you. the professor complicates simple concepts with abstract language, making it hard to follow. asking questions doesn't help, as the answers often leave you more confused. unless you enjoy feeling frustrated, I'd recommend avoiding this class.
This course took so much time to complete. There was tons of reading and it was so difficult to understand.
His textbook is messy and hard to understand, the dudes passionate for sure but definitely doesn't clarify anything ever. A lot of the times I leave with more questions than answers because he's not the best at answering questions either. Sometimes his examples are so confusing he confuses even himself.
Class reads like a drama script, means well but makes simple concepts over complicated for the sake of sounding intelligent.
Smart professor, but his teaching and feedback often made things more confusing. Comments were convoluted and not helpful, and instructions lacked clarity. I ended up dropping the class and taking a W rather than risk failing.
Now when I tell you this dude is the worst ever I would NOT recommend!! He doesn't even teach anything all he do is tell u to look at the syllabus 🙄 his class is VERY confusing/hard and he will drop you if you not doing good in his class! Find a different professor because this one is a strong NO!!!!
His readings are a complete convoluted mess solely created for the purpose of sounding intelligent. Do not take this class if you enjoy your sanity.
This Class has been the worst class I have taken in my entire life.I did not understand one word from the lectures and I should have dropped his class but I did not and that was a stupid choice.I really tried to understand but he made it so complicated that I would feel drained of my energy and so tired sometimes.
Surprised I passed. The class was overly challenging; no feedback was given, the way things are explained doesn't make sense, and his responses can be rude. His final exams were hard. I would not advise you to take this class. Please proceed with caution. Besides that grade scale is fair: B=A, C=B, D=C, letters rounded up; he knows how hard it is.
