All he uses is ILAW, too bad we can't use ILAW on the exam; didn't teach much.
He's lazy and is not a good prof
Terrible prof who relies on ILAW to teach us. You learn nothing
The best thing ever happened to mathematics!
The labs on the lyryx system are great, you can do them over and over until you learn and get a good score!
good man
learned a lot!
Great stuff

GOOD!!
no good
pretty good, but not very in depth with examples, i found.
Excellent
Anyone who can teach math like this man is a genius. I learned more in 221 than all 5 of my other math classes combined. People like him truly make the U of C a world class institution. Thanks Dr. Laflamme, for doing a great job!
Great guy!!!
Focuses on proofs in this course. No suprises in midterms. P.S. DOWN WITH LILA
Notes are not that good.
Very helpful and knowledgable. Great job
The only reason I did bad in this course was because of myself. The times I actually went to class, he explained everything exceptionally well. Kick ass teacher.
Very good prof. Keeps the class interesting and fun, considering its discrete math. I would recommend him.
Great prof. Enthusiastic so classes arent boring. Quizzes and exams are based only on material he covers in lectures so no surprises. Tests arent difficult if you put the effort in. A fair grader as well. Would recommend this prof to anyone who is not that strong in math but needs to have the course done.
He is an awesome teacher, with awesome notes...final I found much harder than the midterms, he's wlays willing to help in class and out.
Fabulous teacher! Helpful, interesting, available anytime. He made the class interactive and fun while never failing to get the info across clearly.
ur lucky to hav him if u do and if u dont get into his lec
This is the only reason why I could stand going to class (being linear algebra - ps the hardest math courses I've ever taken). But what an entertaining guy. Knows what he is talking about, is willing to help out, and cracks up jokes about owls!! What more could you ask from a math teacher? By the way - the parking lot question will be on the final!
Very enthusiastic and makes questions comfortable to ask
Dr. Laflamme is the only math prof I've had at the U of C. But one day we had a sub, they guy that wrote our textbook, and that day I realized how great Laflamme really is. He is able to dumb-down the material so well that I never had to do any homework and barely had to study for any of the tests. Dr. Laflamme is a great teacher!
He has a french accent, is a little eccentric but he does a good job of covering all of the material. Just as a note he almost never does actual examples with number, almost all of his matrices are represented by letters and as such can be a little hard to follow when you first start the course
Excellent!
Take the most boring class you will ever take, math 211, then the most entertaining proffessor you will ever have, and you break even. Great guy, boring course.
I really liked linear algebra, however it did require a lot of work. Dr. Laflamme is an energetic, fun, outgoing prof and definitely enjoys teaching. Although I found the lectures interesting, I had to do a lot of work outside of this class to get an ok mark. A little more of the step-by-step style & with more examples was needed.
Best math prof. I wish all my math courses we're taught by laflame
Amazing Prof. It's as simple as that, if you have the choice of taking one of his classes I highly recommend fitting him into your schedule. If you don't want a kind enthusiastic professor go elsewhere. I greatly enjoyed his class =)
He is an average prof, but went way to fast through the material. He was on average a week ahead of the sylabus, which was very frustrating. He went way to fast on an already fast class.
Some of the material was tricky. He was fair about marking (and generous in most cases) and tried to make the class as interesting as he could.
Strongly recommend him for M311. He genuinely care about students and their gpas, since class average was too low, he considered awarding bonus marks and gave class free access to the online tutorial that came along with textbook. Once you get used to linear algebra, quizzes are easy and straightforward. So was the final, *cheat* sheet was allowed
This prof doesnt teach whatsoever. He comes in and asks the class what everyone wants him to go over and does it poorly. He relies heavily on you to do the textbook readings and goes solely by that. The only good thing he does is he goes over quiz material briefly before the quiz and the questions are similar or variations of the textbook questions
The course didn't really pertain to my interests but going in I did have a strong background in math which I'm sure helped me to secure the grade I got. Quizzes and exams were tricky but fair. Lectures were a little dull but he was more than willing to help if there were any questions!
NOT GOOD for a first year calculus student! I found his classes EXTREMELY hard to follow - it seemed there was no order to what he was teaching. He was always way ahead of the schedule with what he was teaching, and assumed we knew alot of the calculations he was doing. I think he is a genuinely great guy, but a genuinely poor instructor!!
Really great prof! Helped me to understand a subject that just wasn't my thing! I would definitely recommend him for anyone taking Calculus!
Very enthusiastic, great prof only downside is he moves through equations very fast
hes on of the best Calculus profs i have ever had....awesome classes...super enthusiastic classes....just need to stay 'on top of things'....very helpful.really funny classes...i'm gonna miss him so bad :'(
He was awesome. I'm really going to miss having him as a prof. The midterm was extremely fair, although the final was a bit tricky. He was so funny and enthusiastic and would always go over a problem again if someone didn't understand. I would recommend him to anyone!!
Did not introduce calculous simply. I had to learn it on my own. thought that lectures were a waste of my time but i still attended all of them
Great prof, webwork will always suck though. Midterm was easy and so was the final. Practice and you'll be fine.
Professor is wonderful! I Highly recommend taking any course you can with him! He have a section of the course called participation for 10% of your grade! Everyone is pretty much guaranteed to get it! Take this Professor!!
He's an awesome prof and interesting and I love his style of teaching, he's funny and has a nice sense of humor, and seems really enthusiastic about teaching. However I do not know why on the midterms each multiple choice is worth 2 marks, it should be one!
Great prof, going to miss him. The midterm is really easy if you attend his classes, and did all the work assignments. Love his style of teaching and the practice midterms are really good help.
He is an incredible person! His personality is amazing. But, he is flawed at teaching. It is incredibly hard to follow his method of teaching and on top of that, his strong French accent makes it even more difficult. My advice to you is to watch out for the First midterm. The second one is easy though.
Extremely Enthusiastic person, and funny at times, and he's helpful if you go talk to him, however his midterm are decent, written portion is easy but multiple choice is harder, and the finals is really hard.
Really nice person overall, has a sense of humor and got the class to laugh almost every lecture once or twice. In terms of conveying the information, it was decent as well. I didn't really like how he used real world examples to explain the mathematics, maybe I'm just like that. But overall, would recommend having him as a prof 100%.
I didn't mind calculus before this class. It was all theory related and not many really good examples. I absolutely hated the web work although it increases your mark. I found the test quite challenging especially the final exam. He was a funny prof though so it made attending a little more bearable.
Math 251 is generally an easy course and on top of that, Dr. Laflamme made it really understandable. I was with 5 others in his class and we had a blast learning Calculus. He always made jokes and gladly accepted and answered questions in class. Midterms and the Final were fair game. Easiest part of the course is the online assignments.
Course is not that difficult as long as you understands the concepts. The problem is that the professor does not present the material well and all he does class long is examples with little to no explanation. His exams were pretty simple, however he is not preparing you for them.
not the best. nice guy, but not very helpful. just learn from the text.
He doesn't do anything except reading the notes. Never explains hard stuff. Material was not presented well! Not recommended!
Pretty decent prof, not bad at all. Kind if you ask for help individually. He is extremely funny too! Will keep you entertained all lecture and keep you coming back. Just work hard in addition to attending lectures and everything will be fine.
not a good prof. he is enthusiastic, but he is horrible at explaining. he doesn't do any examples in class and the exams are made to trick you. i do not recommend him. just learn from the textbook.
he isn't good prof, i find him explaining the lessons very fast so don't take classes with him especially this class
DONT DO IT!!! NOOO SERIOUSLY DONT!!! Take this class with anybody but him. Super confusing lecture, just reads math off a powerpoint presentation. Talks about irrelevant things. I wouldn't have made it through the course if i had not attended lectures by other profs during different times!
Dr. Laflamme is a very enthusiastic and kind professor. One thing to be aware though is he expects you to keep up with the course on your own. Math courses especially 211 require large amounts of out of class time to properly master the concepts. Go for extra help as much as you can if needed, and read the provided textbook over and over again.
A pretty decent professor for a first year course, pay attention and you'll do well. Definitely not a class you'd want to skip. If you don't pay attention or practice it will be hard, he is pretty clear and uses online notes. Overall a prof worth choosing!
Read a lot of bad reviews for him but I don't know why. Math 211 is really tough class so lower marks should be expected. He's very enthusiastic when teaching which is especially helpful when teaching a math class. Really funny guy and always does his best at explaining difficult concepts. Would pick him again if I take another Math class.
Laflamme deserves more credit than he gets on this site. One of my best profs in first year engg. Although he might speed through material occasionally, he has a strong passion for math, making his lectures fun to be in. Lyryx, will be your best friend in doing well, so use it. Exams will be a breeze.
I agree -- Laflamme deserves more credit than he gets on this site. His lectures were fun, and mostly clear, and he definitely has a strong passion for math! He's super helpful outside of class too. It's easy to get a B+ or an A, but if you're hoping for an A+, you're going to have to work for it (some of his multiple choice questions are tricky!)
I went to see Laflamme after my midterm didn't go so well. He went through the entire test with me and made sure I understood the reasoning behind each answer. Very approachable, and willing to help. Very funny during lectures, although sometimes he doesn't fully explain theory and jumps into examples. Favourite prof my first semester.
THE BEST
Funny, clear, passionate. Favourite prof in my first year!
Dr. Laflamme is a brilliant mathematician, would recommend 100%!
Dr. Laflamme is one of the best. He is lectures are interesting and clear. His only flaw is that his written notes are a bit messy (his writing is NOT neat).
Laflamme was amazing. He made this class super easy for me!
very passionate about what he is teaching. funny. gives great examples that are related to the homework and tests. goes quickly and expects you to understand what is going on. would take a class with him again
If you read the Kuttler notes posted on d2l before you attend the class (and do some of those examples), everything in class will make sense, and you can ace the course. Don't be afraid to ask questions, either during lectures or office hours, he's generally a nice person and is helpful. Also, you don't really need the textbook.
Great prof, explains everything thoroughly and uses examples. Also he is very friendly and good with questions so don't be afraid to ask. Go to the lectures and do the assignments and you should get a good grade. You don't really need the textbook.
Laflamme is my favourite! He is super nice, clear, caring and just awesome. I would sign up for one of his courses in a heartbeat. The way he breaks the course down also makes it pretty easy to do well if you do the practice midterms and finals. I also thought the tutorials were helpful, if you had a good TA. Best guy, if you get him keep him!
Awesome prof! lecture notes are great, and explains really well.
Awesome!! He was good at answering questions and explained the concepts well. This is a difficult course but the exams were fair and he provides lots of practice midterms for practice. The midterm was same as the pervious years with just the numbers changed.
FYI this prof is a co-inventor of Lyryx, the math grading/homework program. Has a French accent, but is still easy to understand. Make sure you attend lecture. He grades very strictly and DOES NOTCURVE, no matter what the final grades are. If you fail, don't expect the curve to bump you up. Recommend getting a textbook and buying access to lyryx
Favorite teacher for my first year entering into University, very energetic, and makes good analogies. Funny guy who knows his stuff. Btw love the french accent he has.
Very enthusiastic. Breaks down formal definitions into every day language. Relates concepts really well to one another showing how everything is connected. He is also very willing to help you if you ask him questions. Top notch guy.
He is a great lecturer, you can tell that he knows what he is talking about and has been teaching for awhile. Sometimes new concepts aren't explained in full which means you have to do a lot of preparation outside of class which makes it a difficult introductory course, but overall you will learn a lot and do well if you put effort in.
He truly loves math and engages all his students very well.
Made me laugh everyday. Great lectures
Fantastic lectures, one of my favorite profs, very knowledgeable guy. He makes funny jokes and tries to relate content to some good examples. If you have to take 211 I would highly recommend taking it with him.
You have to show up to class! If you don't show up, you will not pass. Great guy!
LaFlamme was fantastic. This class was the perfect introductory course. He is an enthusiastic lecturer with a great Quebecois French accent. His lectures consist of explaining the concepts through practical examples. Writes good notes, but they can be illegible. Weekly online homework through lyryx (learn to check your work or spend 5+ hours per!).
Best prof so far! So sweet and sassy
One of the best, if you have a chance to take it with him consider yourself lucky! Great notes, and lectures. I missed a bunch of class, but the less you miss the better. Would be getting an easy A+ if only I had done lyryx asgmts. START THEM EARLY. Tests are fair, just do lots of practice.
His lectures are legitimately entertaining which is rare for for a math class. He clearly loves math and tries to make the class fun for non math majors. He is a real gem and makes the class really easy to understand. He also clearly wants to help students and encourages you to go to his office. Just remember the owls and which day it will rain!!
Linear algebra is a whole new language of math and is incredibly difficult to convey. He taught the material in such a way that was easily understandable and became very clear once you practiced a little bit. When he says DONT QUESTION WHY IT WORKS JUST DO IT, just do exactly that and practice a little. linear algebra is weird and hard
Good prof overall with lots of experience in the course. However, his writing is bloody dreadful and hard to understand too much of the time.
I was registered for this class with another professor and only attended his lectures. Really engaging, easy to follow. Communicates expectations clearly. Tricky final exam (same for all sections), easy assignments (do them, don't google the answers or Wolfram them).
Loved his class!
Would 10/10 recommend taking his class. Explained things thoroughly, was very engaging, made class interesting, and cared about his students. Also really nice that he developed/uses Lyryx because it keeps the cost low (textbook is included in the program)
He is the best
I have no complaints about the material taught in the class (pretty standard stuff) and in front of other students, he's quite friendly and even a good teacher but be careful going to his office hours alone, he has it out for arts majors!
this man is crazy but in a good way lol. amazing guy and so passionate about math.
Loved his lectures, covers the main imp things, for the tiny details you need to go through the slides. His notes on D2L are really good too.
The best professor I've had. Makes the class interesting, teaches the concepts well, and cares about his students. 11/10 would highly recommend.
He's quite the character... and an okay teacher. Doesn't teach the course in a way where you really understand the meaning of what you're doing -- just a matter of showing you how to work through the motions, so it's difficult to apply/understand. If you want to actually grasp the significance of what you're doing, go to continuous tutorials.
He's my favourite prof! He's so lively and makes my truly understand and have fun during class. Going to class was so much fun because he's always excited to teach us new things. Also, he always makes sure that everyone understands the content given by asking if anyone has questions throughout the class and repeating things if needed. Love him!
He is a good Professor! He cares a lot about his students and is always willing to help outside of class. His tests and assignments were fair but the grading seemed inconsistent at times. His lectures were great and he is very funny which makes the lectures fly by! Overall a good professor and would take one of his classes again.
Course was hard, but he presents the material well. Lectures were very helpful, he often shows proofs and explanations that are not in the textbook. The TA and marking was good as well.
Absolute God. Hilarious and confident when teaching.
amazing prof that cares for his students, very open minded and realized that life happens.
A very confident, jovial professor who gives thorough lectures, and has a great sense of humour. He uses a digital document projector to teach and explains the complicated material in a relatively easy-to-understand manner. He stays around for a few minutes after each class for people to ask him questions, and posts his notes online.
He was very nice and explain things in a way that many students could understand!
The best prof I've been with so far! He understands his material really well but I feel like his knowledge is at the point where what we find hard is what he finds easy. He is very entertaining and very humorous. He cares a lot for his students and he frequently stays after his lectures for students to go ask him questions.
Laflamme the GOAT, best 211 prof out there. Did drop the class though, cuz I didnt need it.
The founder of Lyryx himself, a true gem. Very fun and engaging lectures and extremely helpful all-around. Teaches concepts well and goes over examples in class. Good notes, all around great. Make sure you know your theory and don't rely purely on lyryx as study material.
Often left his lectures more confused than before. I practically had to teach myself 211 through YouTube videos and the online textbook.
He gives amazing lectures
I needed accommodations halfway through the semester because I got hella sick and he straight up refused to work with me because I had less than 100% on a single assignment. He's an okay lecturer, given the course, though if your class hits 10% below the expected average on a midterm he'll act like it has nothing to do with him.
He's okay, not the best and you going to lectures doesn't help because he's all over the place when explaining and trying to make annoying jokes. I'd recommend PREP101 (not sponsored) because he's not really helpful besides posting previous tests which he reuses some of the questions.
Laflamme gives great lectures! He shows how to work through problems that will appear on exams - his notes are a bit messy but as a university student you should know how to take your own notes in lecture by now, and his posted notes will supplement yours when you review. The general lecture slides were also necessary in my opinion.
One of the best professors the math department has seen truly a blessing for first years.
Found his lectures extremely helpful, he did a great job of explaining the concepts with examples I could follow and understand. Took the class in Spring during COVID and he and the other instructors set up a great online roadmap for the course materials. Really appreciate how he adopted such a hard course for us to learn at home.
Dr. Laflamme is so far THE best math professor in the department that I've had. I took MATH 211 during Covid-19 and his online lectures are amazing. He does an excellent job of explaining concepts clearly and is always eager to answer questions. The course was set up incredibly well so props go out to him and his colleagues teaching this course.
Lost BOTH of my midterms last year ... didn't email me back so I went to his office, and I doubt he even looked for it ... that is unacceptable. Expect tangents and messy writing. Mediocre professor so I'd recommend teaching yourself considering there is so many resources.
He was very helpful in the online process so I can not give input for a in person course. But he was extremely helpful and really taught the content in a great manner.
Took this in fall2018 so keep that in mind. Laflamme repeatedly took breaks to go skiing, attend conferences, etc... and had the most garbage subs in his place. His easy-going teaching style will prepare you for maybe 10% of exam content. In hindsight, this is an easy course but Laflamme did a good job of making it difficult.
Best notes you'll ever take. Made me look forward to his class. Very interesting and friendly. Just pay attention, and you'll ace this class; he pretty much goes over everything you'll need to know He's willing to answer questions after class, so don't worry if you don't understand
Had a '50/50' of online and in person classes, but the course was actually all online. Did horrible on my second midterm after studying for days, and then when I emailed prof. Laflamme about it, he basically confirmed that we had never seen more than half of the questions on the midterm and replied to a few of my questions with 'did you even try?'
Active learning class, I have never seen him in my life. Basically self-taught myself but it's an easy course as long as you read the textbook, do the lyryx engage mobile app and homeworks.
He was the course coordinator for Math 211 this year and literally the entire course was just lyryx and reading the textbook for yourself. Not exactly the most fun experience you'd want in your first year. Even thought it was suppose to be 50/50 split between in person and online, all of it essentially was online. Would not take again.
While he himself didn't conduct the lectures and left it to the students to read up on the textbook, he was pretty helpful with things. The entire course was basically on lyryx though and he gave pretty good feedback.
I have never had any contact with this professor in-person, only through occasional emails. This course was supposedly in-person but pretty much all course content was online which led to this class having an extremely low attendance rate. When there were in-person lectures, they were given by TAs who were pretty good and I feel a bit bad for.
