He is damn cool guy
doesn't prepare you for extremely hard tests. His examples in class are easy to understand, but tests material are not like the examples in the class.
Material is difficult. Lot of extra work required to do well.
he doesnt always cover whats on the test so do a lot of extra hw outside because the stuff he does on board and hw he gives you is easy as heck compared to what you have on the exams. look for harder questions in the book and ask them in class if you dont think you understand material well.
Everything the others said is true, but to be fair, we were warned at the beginning of the class that it would be harder than any other class we've had so far.
The difficulty of the HW is reasonable and will give you a false sense of security before taking the insanely hard tests.
very very hard, exams are totally different from homework or the problems that he gives you, and he grade exams very tuff
Cool guy but not for physics.HW has nothing to do with the exams.Exam problems are all show your work with no time to finish and require thinking out of the box.His example problems are made up at that moment and he thinks out loud which is confusing when you're taking notes.
I took this professor for both A and C, and have been pleased with his ability to teach in both classes. I agree that the tests are difficult...but it is physics!!! An easy teacher does not always=a good teacher. Claude Mona is a quality educator who expects quality from his students. He is respectful, patient, and willing to help his students...
He makes physics interesting.
Very thorough and fair professor. The previous postings for mona were unfair because physics is a very difficult subject. Compared to all my previous physics professors, Mona is the best.
I would not take him, if I want to pass, because if you give him his own tests he can't do them, in his class he gave an extra credit and I took it to a guy who had master degree in physics and it took him about 45 minutes to answer the question and he was suprise of how hard was the question for lower devision physics
bad bad teacher
He is very down to earth teacher, chills, and fair at the same time. His test is very do-able if you study. Lecture is clear and easy to study. i really enjoy the class and doing ligh, optic, and modern physic in the summer and passing with a good grade. this teacher must knows what he's doing.
Take him if you need a challenge and/or find pleasure in pain. To his credit, he is humorous, has a possitive attitude, give interesting lectures. Unfortunately, he hasn't quite got this teaching thing worked out yet. Homework is long and tedious and hard to get from the lectures and even the book. Tests are impossible to be prepared for EVER.
do not take him
It was a nightmare. If you are masochist you should take his class. He is helpful but his point of the subject is somewhere. His exams ware externally hard, so I spent 40 hours per week of study to get “A.”
Professor Mona is perhaps the best option for either physics 195B-195C....or perhaps i'm just crazy. This man is awesome. He knows how to convey the materials to his students effectively, he allows you to have a peice of paper (back to back) of notes for the test, and the best thing is that his grade standards are: >80=A; >70B; >60C. He makes physi
One of my best instructors so far. He has a solid understanding of physics and he's all about helping when you have questions. If you don't ask questions and do the homework, you're probably not going to do well in the class. HILARIOUS. Makes class fun and interesting. A strange affinity for MAGIC game and stuff like that.

Best physics teacher I've ever talked with. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he was able to explain everything all material and more. Knowing what to asking & asking is key in the class. Prepairing prior to class is the way to know what to ask. Follow his recommendations for studying! Superior teacher. He should get a raise! MyGrade: A
Professor. Mona is one of the best teachers in mesa. take his class. you will enjoy his style of teaching.he is very friendly and he makes sure everybody understands the concepts.
Knows his stuff and genuinely loves physics. always available for help and tries his best to help you without doing the work for you. i'm taking physics in another school and it turns out we learned waaay more than we were "supposed" to. he also ties in concepts for later classes into this one, which is more work for him but saves me work later
hard teacher lots of HW
this guy is great for those who like to teach to themselves. lectures are dynamic but the guy just doesn't explain well. when asked, he couldn't solve a few of the problems he assigned- not very effective for learning. attitude at times, too. very high expectations for this level of physics- not only for workload though- for critical thinking.
Unrealistic expectations for this level of physics. All science classes require extra work to understand the concepts... no problem. This one requires an already existent working knowledge of physics for complete understanding... Do yourself a favor-- take physics 195 with someone other than Mona.
He was an excellent professor and very helpful during office hours. If office hours are not enough go to the friday classes. It was a challenging class but i work best under these conditions. Tests are hard but you can earn a B or A if you get A's on homework and labs. Try to understand the material without that you cannot move on. Dont give up fas
he's a great lecturer- really captures your attention in class and makes material interesting. excellent on availability in OH. high expectations for critical thinking- sometimes maybe too high- but generous on partial credit. a lot of "homework"- but it pays off. friendly, approachable, and fair. I would take him again if he'd teach C..
Great teacher! The people who are complaining were just looking for a free ride... Wimps! If your career is going to have physics involved- Take Him! He's not easy but makes the work fun. Don't take him if you're a loser who wants a free ride. He is definitely one of the cooler teachers I have taken during my college experience.
I though he is very good professor. his problem set are hard and he makes you earn your grade. Overall I think he is a great professor. You will learn a lot.
Avoid this guy as much as possible! His exams are very tough and gives tough homework. He can't solve some of his own problems.
One of the best teachers I have ever seen.fair instructor. very helpful.
dont take him, plz
Mona is a good lecturer. He makes a difficult subject interesting to listen to.However, the class itself is quit challenging.Tests & problem sets are hard to very difficult, labs are much easier. He is willing to help you as much as you are willing to put into the class. Difficult subject matter, good teacher and nice guy.
OMG this guy is hard. you will work your butt off if you take him. labs are extremely easy, prob sets and exams are hard to near impossible. take him if your a physics/engineering major...if not take an easier physics or even another teacher for 195
VERY HARD subject, but Claude was very patient and extremely helpful. I spent many hours in his office and in the tutor center, and after labs. He was always willing to help. lots of homework, but it's passable if you put in the work. I would not take the class with anyone else.
If you take time and study and learn the material and understand the concepts than this class will be a breeze. It was my second time taking physics. I first took it at Palomar college with NAKAJIMA!!! If you think Mona is hard try Nakajima!!!! Just ask questions and do the HW, Get a tutor all the help is there all u need to do is go for it
Take him!!! I really learned the material and he is sooo helpful always answers any and all questions!!! I got an A! If you want an A do the problem sets early!!!
Physics is not an easy subject. If you are a pre-med student and want to do well on the MCAT. Take him. I took the MCAT and had a good score on the physics portion.I had him a year ago and still remember most of the stuff he taught. He requires you to go beyond the basic concepts so you can apply them for other situations (like the problem sets.
TAKE HIM, very entertaining as well as make physics understandable. I originally took this class with Crivello in spring 09 and did not do well. I feel like Mona is so much more helpful and understanding. I really enjoyed his class. Oh and yes its challenging but he will help u. An A a very possible!!! Dont give up
His class is difficult but it's interesting and he's extremely helpful when you're stuck. Go to office hours regularly, attend the friday class, and spend a lot of time on the problem sets and you'll be fine. Also the funniest and most extertainprofessor I've had so far. Hands down my favorite class ever.
I'd strongly recommend his class.
Super helpful, wants you to understand and will pretty much go out of his way to make sure that you do. Do not mistake his kindness for weakness. The homework is no joke and neither are the tests. If you need physics TAKE THIS GUY.
He keeps it real I am really enjoying this class. I love his curved grading system!!! I love how he is so helpful and always answers questions no matter how stupid they are. One of the best professors I have ever had!!!
He made class enjoyable and I really liked his method of teaching. By far one of Mesa's best professors! Take him if you have a chance
One of the best professors I have ever had!!!!! As long as you do the problems sets I am sure you cant get anything less that a B. At first he tries to scare you to weed out the slackers but he is actual very generous. As long as you know what the is going you you will be more than fine TAKE HIM!!!
Best professor at mesa! I have learned soo much! for sure take him! if you are struggling he offers alot of extra credit to help boast up your grade!
He does answer every questions...even the dumb ones! However, he does expect more than normal in his Problem sets and test. Definately not an easy A. But very clear on what he expects and extremely helpful.
If you want to master a physics as well as being generously guided along the way Mona is the professor for you. Like others have mentioned if you do the problem sets early there is no way you can do poorly in this class.
Good teacher learned a lot however i was 1 percent away from getting an A and he did not give it to me.
I worked hard for my A, strongly recommend this professor. Mona taught everything well and I understood a lot of it. Now i feel prepared to go to 196 and destroy the class. Mona is the man. take him. Best physics teacher ever!!! Chuck Norris Status
This guy was rough... but a good a teacher. Overall, i think i learned a lot but i worked my butt off in his class. If your looking for an easy A, stay away.. Had to spend hours working on his problems sets in tutoring center. I want my 100 hours of my life back.
He expects a lot out of you but doesn't do much on his end other than just give you hard homework and tests. He goes off on philosophical physics tangents and spends a lot of time just ripping on people. Not much time is spent actually covering material to help your understanding. All his class is good for is measuring how good your tutor is.
Good teacher, he understands how people learn and he cares. Some teachers you can tell would rather be doing something else. In his case he seems to truly enjoy teaching. By far the best physics prof at mesa. Class has some very hard questions. Prob easy to get a C but very hard to get an A.
I think he's the best physics prof at Mesa College and really the rest of the comments on here say it all.
Probably has people posting fake reviews on here. You'll regret it, I know I did. You must know the syllabus rules to the letter and watch for extra rules hidden on tests. Only for elitists and masochists. Not geared the way a first semester physics course should be. Lectures and homework don't prepare you. Class feels like 12 units, not ok.
Best physics teacher ever. Take him if you want to actually LEARN physics, not if you want an A or want to just get by. I'm going to medical school and feel that his teaching gave me a solid understanding of physics so that I will do great on the MCATs. Thanks Mona (He's also super cool and rather hot)
Physics is non-intuitive for some (most?) students, but Mona tries to make this class as easy as possible. I can't guarantee that you'll like his teaching style, but the upside is that he'll ALWAYS ALWAYS answer your questions. As long as you're not an idiot with how you manage your time and you actually study, then getting an A is not THAT hard.
He is really cool and smart. He is willing to answer your questions but usually not really clear.Homework is way too hard. His exams (quizzes) are always on the sky level compare to his ground level of lecture. I feel like taking a 12 units class.
Very attractive but extremely difficult and not very helpful (he tries). His office hours are limited and he doesn't have enough time to help with everyones questions (difficult homework and very difficult tests). If you want to spend 25+hours a week doing homework & you have a friend who is very good at Physics, this is the class for you.
Prof. Mona is top-notch. He is the Tom Teegarden of Physics. His lectures are clear and succinct. Homework and tests are tough, but do-able. Read the Syllabus (thoroughly) before the first day.
I am an "A" student and got my 1st "C" in this class. Professor Mona is very difficult. He assigns impossible homework then when he is 'available' to help he is too busy 'being cool' with the butt-kissers to actually help the students who have real questions. He will reply to emails but won't give any helpful information. Don't take him.
Don't take him. He doesn't teach the material that he tests you on. He teaches simple problems then assigns complex problems for homework and complex problems on his texts.
Prof. Mona is just average, I won't be taking him again. Isn't much help during the office hours but will reply to emails.
If your major is not in Physics I do not recommend taking this class.
Spending 35 hours per week of my life working on his problems sets in tutoring center was not what I had in mind when I signed up for this class. He does not teach the material. You have been warned.
Mona isn't terrible but certainly isn't as excellent as the last poster makes him out to be. He knows his stuff but doesn't have time to help with everyones questions on the difficult assignments (not a very good quality in a professor) You will spend a lot of time with a tutor.
Good Professor. Be prepared to work hard.(20+ hrs/week) Getting into a study group is a good idea, as one may catch the minor details the other may miss. Conceptually speaking,it would be wise of you to be "Thinking Physics" in this class.
He is the best of times, he is the worst of times. His ability to teach physics combined with his enthusiasm for the subject makes for an exceptionally unique class. You WILL spend 30+ hours weekly, on his problem sets, you WILL choke on his tests, and you WILL walk away wishing you could take him again.
I spent at least 9000 hours PER WEEK doing this guy's assigned work, and I still failed.
Best teacher I had at this school. Actually teaches the material with metaphors and everything. Good for hard sciences, but engineers may want to take someone "easy". You will learn more in this class than in any other though.
He is really hard. He teaches the materials clearly. He helps students too. His assignments are hard, and u must spend hours on them. His exams are hard, but that is what physics should be. If u try hard and get a tutor, u can at least pass this course. I love his grading scale. A C is 62%, a B is 75%, and A is 88%. Good but hard professor.
He's a genuinely entertaining dude, but you wont be able to "plug and chug", and you won't survive on hard work alone - thought is required (*gasp*). He is the most valuable teacher I have taken; he TRULY teaches the material and pushes his students. If that doesn't excite you, you WILL join those begging for all the hours of their lives back. YMMV
No doubt physics is a hard subject but Mona does a good job covering/explaining the materials. Very good grading curve scale. However, you'll be spending a lot of hours in this class because of his ridiculously hard take home quizzes and his tests are hard. But if you try and actually "study" you'll pass.
His lectures are interesting and he does a great job of describing physics in a way that is understandable. Having said that, his quizzes & exams are very hard and quite honestly nothing like his lectures. I suggest doing all the homework problems prior to the quizzes. Even when he says it won't be on a test, it most likely will be
He's hard, but physics isn't easy. His take-home quizzes are hard and his exams are even harder. A plug and chug approach to physics gets you nowhere in this class. Try to stay ahead of the material and you'll do fine. I can't recall a physics question thrown at him that he couldn't answer. Very high-quality instructor, be ready to study hard.
Hard teacher, require a lot of work. His take home quiz was very hard. You need spend a lot of time on this class in order to success
Mona is an EXTREMELY difficult teacher with that in mind if you plan on being an engineer this level of difficulty is expected otherwise keep-clear from him. Expect to work for a long time on his Take-Home Quiz and be prepared to be taught things that is not "required" but interesting none the less. His tests are hard even though we get to drop 1
I got an A in this class and I have to work VERY HARD for that. I strongly recommend you to work of the assigned problems in the textbook and the problem sets online. He is a very good teacher, but dont take him if you want an A.
Took this class last year. Definitely not an easy A, by far the most extra studying and problem solving I have done for a single class. But if you are a physics or engineering major, taking prof. Mona's class is a MUST. I have taken other Phys courses afterwards, and no matter what, I have the best knowledge in PHYS 195 I could ever get!
If you are an engineering major take Mona! This class was one of the hardest classes I took at Mesa, but it is amazingly helpful in all of my engineering classes. This one class will make many future classes easy. Where some of my fellow students are struggling I barely even have to study. This class will help you forever. TAKE HIM!
I can no longer manually stimulate myself with out thinking about coefficients of kinetic friction, torque, reciprocating mass, projectile motion, and the right hand rule. Mona ruined the one thing in my life that made me happy.
While Mona is a really smart guy and knows a ton about the material, he doesn't do a great job explaining things. He prefers to do examples that he won't test you on instead of the ones on the test, which is extremely frustrating. Plan to work really hard if you want an A.
Newtonian mechanics isn't easy to learn over a course of one semester. Professor Mona's grading scale seems fair, but be prepared to put a lot of effort and time. His take home questions are brutal and exams are much worst. Not an easy A, but if you try your best, you should at least pass the course. I recommend him for engineering majors.
Great guy to talk to, willing to stick with you. Class is super hard though. You have to earn your A. His teaching style can put a lot of people off. He often makes mistakes by making up numbers for a problem and that just confuses the class. Great person overall though, teaching not so much unfortunately.
Great professor. He makes lectures fun. Is Very open to answering questions. Responds to E-mail questions very quickly. If you need help, just ask or go to office hours. Take home quizzes were very tough, so start early and ask questions. Labs are straight forward, but make sure not to procrastinate. Overall was my favorite class.
A great person, I have a lots of fun in his class. HOWEVER, the test are BRUTAL, AND the take home quizes EVEN WORSE!.I swear you are going to spend over 30 hours a week studying physics or at least thinking about it. I can only say that if you want an A .... maybe you should be looking at another college !. otherwise, Good luck!.
I thought the lectures were good and kept me interested. Everytime I would email for help I got a quick and helpful response. The take home quizzes are difficult and the exams are no joke but if you are diligent and keep on top of everything you'll do fine. I enjoyed his class :)
If you're used to passing classes without putting effort in it, don't take Mona. Be prepared to befriend people who "get it", complete all work including "optional" textbook questions, ask him questions, and spend 20+ hours a week studying and you're a safe bet to pass.
Hard Professor. However, if you work hard enough and voluntarily do HW that are not required to do, you might have a shot.
I nearly die every single exam. If you end up with him, make sure you do your reading. Effort is your grade. He explain the material well, but you must really know the concepts in order to pass. Give 110% and you'll get an A. You can pass it!
Lectures are interesting, but does not reflect the quizzes or exams. Physics is difficult with Prof. Mona, but he's a lot of fun and very attractive.
He's a good professor. He's really cares for you. If you ever need help, he will help you without a doubt. Be prepared for the weekly reading quizes he gives straight from the textbook. Go to the review class towards the end of the year because he will tell you what is or isn't on the final exam. I recommend him. Good luck though! Duece Five !$25$
Excellent lecturer, has background and credentials to go beyond the scope of class. The take-home quizzes can be very time consuming, do all the suggested problem sets in the book and online prior to coming to class. The exams are hard but grading scale is very fair. He not only taught me physics but helped me study better for my other classes too.
This guys a really good teacher. He has fun teaching which helps you pay attention. He's really funny too. Its a hard class, but if your majoring in anything that uses phys take this guy it will be very helpful down the road.
Very knowledgable professor and is willing to help struggling students. I found the course extremely challenging, but if you are willing to put in the extra effort you can pass. The weekly take home quizzes were a nightmare. Most of them took an extremely long time even with working with others. VERY tough class but you will really learn physics
He is knowledgeable person and he explains the materials so clear. His is so organize, also if you have any question about the material,he would be happy to help.
His exams were difficult, and his take-home quizzes were not a walk in the park, but hands down, one of the best Physics professors. Very knowledgeable. Great guy.
Mona is the greatest quintessential investment to your education both in college and beyond. STEM majors should look no further for a gold standard of quality, personality and professionalism. Mona challenges the challengers and weeds out fakers. Physics as physics was meant to be taught, both in rigor and style. Work hard & give a damn, or get out
Taking Mona for this class will greatly prepare you for future physics (and math) classes. Although his tests and quizzes are difficult (understatement), you will learn physics better than any other student through the intense mental abuse that is physics. This class is not for slackers.
This class is tough. That being said, Mona has the uncanny ability of explaining physics concepts in a clear and concise way. He is also really down to earth and cool to talk to. Make sure to do the extra credit problems and see him for office hours if needed...and don't slack even for a second or this class will eat you alive. WORK IN GROUPS!!!
Physics might be the hardest class you will take up to now. Mona is an amazing teacher and the class will consume all your time. The tests are hard but they need to be so you can learn. I took this class two years ago and am so thankful because he set me up for so many other engineering classes. I highly recommend him if you are continuing on.
There's only the final left for the class and I am already missing him. He is one of the most enthusiastic professors that I've ever had. Lectures are clear and if you don't get it, he'll be willing to explain it to you again and again. Study hard, do quizzes + homework and you should be fine on the tests. Thank you for everything Professor Mona!
This is one of the courses that will set you up for future engineering classes & sciences. Mona does an excellent job delivering his lectures and breaks it down simple for you to understand. Exams and take home quizzes were quite the challenge, but will prepare you for obstacles in future academics. This class is definitely not for slackers.
He's a good instructor in a area where there are not many. He is good a conveying information and person to person level which is rare in physics. With that being said his class was by far the most challenging I've had so far.
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge." A. Einstein ... give you something to take home to think about besides homework ... and bring out the best in you This's a professor I'm describing . Taking full advantage of his office hours, time in labs because it will make your life easier.
Quizzes and exams were most challenging I've ever faced, but Mona gives you all the knowledge, background, etc. you need, with good demos. It just requires practice, which is why I didn't get a good grade. Mona is very helpful, relaxed. You get the grade you earn. Passing his class (even with a C) makes me feel like I'm ready for the next level.
Successful eng transfer here. Don't cheat yourself without Vitamin Mona and actually begin to learn how to think like an engineer. It's imperative you use your brain. The sooner before uni, the better. Physics never goes away and so what you learn here lasts. Substantial returns. Be smart. No regrets. Your brain needs this. Don't wait. Do it.
I love mona, I hate mona. His tests are hard to the point of frustration, his take home quizzes are actually leaning towards unacceptably challenging, and his formatting can be irritating because if you mess up, even a little, no credit. HOWEVER, I stop being mad at him once I get to lecture. Super awesome professor who is very enthusiastic. A+
Professor Mona is awesome. He knows his stuff and knows how to teach it. Lectures are engaging and often funny. That being said, Phys195 is a very difficult class; if you want an A or B you MUST work homework problems regularly! Tests are hard but he gives partial credit and you can earn 5% extra credit on each one. He also wears funny shirts.
That Physics class may have been the hardest thing I've ever done in my life. The subject is very abstract. Professor Mona makes it as simple as he can with great diagrams (dude's an artist). Doing homework is essential, he will answer any question. Go to his office hours!
Physics is a very hard and complex subject but professor Mona does a amazing job at presenting the material. He expects a lot out of his students, so expect the quizzes and exams to be hard. If anyone decides to take him try to read if you can the first 3 chapters of any physics book and understand the material it will help you a lot.
Mona is a great professor. He explains everything and is very clear about it. It's a Physics class; you need to put effort into it and think outside the box. There was nothing surprise on any quizzes or exams, it's Physics. I had a great time and even though I thought it was easy, I think it was somewhat difficult for others (can't problem solve?)
Professor Mona is a hard professor meaning he will make you work hard for your grade but he is really helpful when you ask questions or when you're lost go to his office hours and he will clarify your doubt's. My only regret is that i wish i could have taken him for 195. Good luck to any who dare to take his class.
I took him for Phys195 and I'm about to finish taking him for Phys196 and if I had the option to look back and choose a different professor I will not change it. While I was taking him I found Linear Algebra, Calc 3 and Differential Equations easy. His methods and approaches make you think beyond your traditional norm, for that I am thankful
Lecture is packed/ fast, little time 4 in-class practice. Take-home quizzes require a lot of commitment, sometimes more than 10 hours a week. Beware of work load overkill from this class if you must take 12 units. Lab is long, pages of lab worksheets, not enough time to understand it, just get it done. Truly rigorous, suitable prep for UCSD.
This class will make you cry but you'll learn the material to the core. The course goes so in-depth my friends in eng/phys at UCSD couldn't help me with much of the material. Mona's 196 relies on time management. Study the material before and after each class and you're golden. Always there to help students and a pretty cool guy,
If you honestly want to feel challenged and be pushed to your limits then take this professor. I'm a transfer student who is now attending U.C. Berkeley as a Electrical and Computer Science major and if it wasn't for Mona I would be suffering more than my current classmates. He has earned my respect by making me learn and understand the material.
INCREDIBLY RIGOROUS, in depth course. Most people coming into the class, will have to use their BEST effort to earn an A. To balance out the rigor of this course, Professor Mona is an EXCELLENT professor who has immense PASSION for his occupation. If you need help, get help, and he will do his best to assist you. Step yo game up.
Sure, Prof Mona is 'tough', but he is accessible. All Physics professors are tough; Physics is tough. Physics does not, however, need to be miserable. Claude will treat you with respect, he is always available, and will teach you the logic as opposed to the formulas (formulas too). Knowledgable, TONS of feedback, and a very fair final. A+++++++++++
Professor Mona is quite a difficult professor to take. Although he knows his physics, if you're looking to get a good grade in the class be prepared to spend tons of time racking your brain out on the take home quizzes, labs, writing prompts, and if youre shooting for it, extra credit. Even after all that, scoring a good grade felt impossible.
Took E&M with Mona at Mesa and am now at UCSD... If you want to know what it will be like at UCSD take him. If you want to be an engineer, you need to understand the difficult material, not get a good grade and get into the school you want, unprepared. Hard class... well worth it.
Superb ability to convey the topics and respected by his students. Of course physics is hard but Mona is totally there to help students to succeed. He takes the time to give quality feedback on all work. All around a great guy.
He is someone I highly respect but can still have a down to earth conversation with. He is completely unbiased with his students; he treats everyone fairly & with respect. He cares as much as you do- gets assignments & tests back ASAP so you always know where you stand. You can count on fair grading, difficult exams, and extra credit opportunities.
I didn't realize how much I appreciate Mona until I got to UC. A must for Engineers. The amount of grief I got from him molded me into a better student. His nerve racking quizzes, analyzing each and every word has taught me how to flip it back on Uni physicists. Yes, I've argued 20% midterm grade back from wording analysis learned through Mona.
Truly phenomenal professor. If you want a get a free A, then go elsewhere. But if you want to learn Physics, then take Mona. Mona is not only an amazing teacher, but he is a great person. Almost like a friend. I have had some funny and some deep conversations with him. I can not recommend Mona more to students who want to become good engineers.
Awesome teacher, great guy! Like others have said, if you want an easy A, go elsewhere. You'll learn a lot if you listen and do the work.
Prof Mona has been one of my fav Professors. His class is very hard, and he has a lot of assignments. Do not take if you looking for an easy A. If you're genuinely interested in learning this subject then take Prof Mona. He is available outside of class for any additional help.
By far one of the best professors at mesa. His class is no easy task! It is a struggle, but if you have the will to learn you can succeed! I have taken him for phys 195 and 196, I would take him again if he was teaching 197. He encourages students to take advantage of his office hours and to email him when there are any questions.
He's very knowledgeable, and he teaches at the high level comparable with UCSD. He put efforts in his lectures and he expects the same on the test from the students. Take the lectures seriously and put the time in practice, you get good results.
For 195, Professor Mona is a really good teacher! He will do his best to help you understand (so ask questions and go to office hours) and there are extra credit assignments for a grade boost and extra understanding! The textbook is online, so you don't have to go out and buy one. Also, he is very kind on he final.
Mona is a super cool dude and is very helpful. His class is hard, so study. Would take again!
Exams aren't weighted too heavily because they are BRUTAL. You'll study, you'll try, you'll cry, and you'll become a better a student in the end. Great lectures and content delivery. Do not take him if you want to skate by for an easy A. Do take him if you care about the subject and want to understand it well. Plus, he's a cool dude.
By far the best professor at Mesa that you can take if you wanna suceed in your future. I transferred to UC Berkeley for engineering and Mona's class prepared me very well for the difficulty at Berkeley. Mona's class is challenging, but it will make you a better student.
Phys 197 is a hard class and he is a good teacher, but the grading is very hard and even though there is extra credit the class is designed with the extra credit so it is required to get a good grade in the class. Reviewing the chapter before class is required for this class.
Although I would not personally take this class again, he is a decent teacher and knows the material well. Just has rough grading but gives partial credit. Extra credit is basically required as well as reviewing the chapter before lecture. I am normally an A-B student but for this class, it was more like a C-B.
Highly knowledgable. I cant recall one question unanswered. Tests are HARD so FOCUS ON THE FORMULAS. Be familiar w/unit converting. Don't copy down a previous practice problem because it will not help. Extra credit opportunities weekly and for the test. Meticulous on labs so don't be lazy on units and numbers. Ask for help and go to the STEM center
Physics is not easy! This course will make you cry, question your existence, and contemplate your career choices. However, Mona's AMAZING lectures and humor are almost worth it. To do well you must do as many practice problems as possible, never miss lecture, and attend his office hours if you have any questions. The final can bump you up a grade!
Amazing professor who pushes you to do better. I loved the class but I did struggle.
I'm almost finished with my Mechanical Engineering Degree at UCSD, and I just have to state that without the work ethic built into me after taking Mona for 195 and 196, I wouldn't have survived for more than a couple quarters. If you think Mona's class is hard, just wait until you transfer to a 4 year University and get pummeled like Mike Tyson.
4 exams(40%) plus a final(10 %). The HW(%25) is on webassign. you have one week to finish the lab (% 20)its due before you start the next lab. Drops the lowest exam score, HW, and lab. 5% class participation, BTW HIS TESTS ARE THE HARDEST THING IN THE WORLD MAKE SURE YOU PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS!!!!
The physics department at Mesa College is stacked with just absolutely awesome professors and Claude is one of them. You WILL work for your A. You WILL work for your B. At course end, you'll wish you were a physics major of any discipline. Do the extra credit. Do the labs/homework. Read the text. Watch YouTube. Visit hyperphysics. You've got this!
HE WILL MAKE YOU WORK FOR IT.. HIS EXAMS ARE EXTREMELY HARD. gOOd thing thEy are only40% of the grade ror else would be impossible to pass his class.
Mona is an absolutely awesome professor. Even through this tough semester, he found a way to retain most of the students by showing he cares about our success. COVID-19 stole this semester's great labs from us, but we were still able to learn through the calculations and online simulations. His exams will definitely make you cry, though. Study!!!
I've had the pleasure of knowing Prof. Mona for several semesters now. Don't be mistaken, he is very passionate about ensuring that his students both learn physics well but also develop the work ethic for when they transfer. Do all the extra credit & study hard. His insights into physics are as fascinating as they are inspiring. Take the class!
Mona is a really good professor, honestly your going to take him anyway so might as well take him for Phy195 and get started early. His tests are hard, but if you study and do the work it pays off. You may have to treat this class like its your only class. His final letter grades are on a curve so that's helpful.
One of my favorite professors. You never know the value of a good professor until you finally have one. The material in our class is as tough as it can get, but the professor kept reassuring us that its ok if we don't completely understand or are struggling. Always trying to lift students up and never discouraging. Even through COVID.
So many great things to say about this professor just from my online experience. E&M is already tough enough on it's own, but he found a way to help me understand the material even online. Gives feedback that will really shape you into a better student. His lecture vids actually keep my attention and he offers tons of help in office hours.
If you want to learn Physics well and be prepared, then Mona is the way to go. Class is tough but he is a great professor who is willing to help you at every step of the way. Take him! You will not regret it. After taking him for the three physics series, I felt that I got my money's worth
Professor Mona uses physics as a platform to build good habits and share life lessons. The takeaways have paved my ethic, and his presence was truly a pleasure. Work hard.
Hate his lab...
Remember to read syllabus carefully. VERY difficult class and VERY tough grader. He even didn't give me full grades for participation, even if I went to all the classes and finished all the homework. Luckily he would drop some lowever grades. He created a group for the class, which is good though. Thank god this is my last semester before transfer.
Despite his herculean exams and heavy class content, Prof. Mona is a riveting lecturer and fantastic professor with a passion for helping you understand physics on the fundamental level. Very witty, great at explaining concepts as mind-boggling as quantum mechanics w/ ease. Answers all questions and has great office hours. Can be snarky.
I have conflicting feelings about Mona. The lectures are all over the place and very convoluted. He may answer your questions with a condescending tone (in front of the whole class) and come off as arrogant sometimes, but he was very accessible whenever you messaged him with a question. His labs are fun and he will guide you through it.
I was petrified of taking physics because I did so poorly in high school. I somehow failed every test (his tests are not easy at all), but I did well on homework, labs, and attendance. I have never enjoyed a class that I was so awful at, and Professor Mona made that possible. Be aware this is Calculus based physics.
Such a great professor. His tests are not comparable to lecture or homework, however. He explains the material very well, he is caring and passionate about physics, but in my opinion, makes the exams way much harder than they should be.
Mona has a great teaching style. Entertaining lecturer. Tests are very little like HW or lectures. You have to really understand the material to do well on the tests. Always listens and explains things well. Read the syllabus, read the textbook, and do as many practice problems as you can.
I also took him for PHYS195. He is a great lecturer, and his classes are fun. Be ready for the tests though because they are not easy! Luckily grades are curved, and if you do well on the homework and labs, and show up for class, you will enjoy this class. You will learn a lot!
Professor Mona's exams often escape the scope of the chapters in which the homework/reading/lectures cover. If you want to pass this class, you have to go out of your way to ask for help. When I took this class, more than half of the class ended up dropping, and of the students who remained, half of them ended up failing by the end of the semester.
Professor Mona is a great teacher. He explained things in a way I could understand and was very approachable when I had questions on the material. He is good at getting back to you, especially on questions about the homework. It's a lot of work, but you learn everything well. If you're interested in physics, take this class.
Take him if you want to learn the subject, however don't expect a good grade in the course. He is a very tough grader as he wants to ensure you learn all concepts. In my class only 1 person received an A, 3 got a B, and the rest got a C or failed. Be prepared for lots of Homework and difficult Tests and labs. I would suggest taking someone easier.
Horrible Professor. Other Profs say exams are from upper division UCSD physics, explaining avgs hovering around 35%. Most of the class withdrew with the rest barely passing. Condescending and rude. Labs, intended for grade improvement, receive harsh grading. Lectures are useless. Don't fall for high rating, I'm a straight A student, barely passed.
He will give you EVERYTHING you need to succeed and is available to you when you have questions. His grading system if very fair. His tests take what you have learn and push you slightly above. Just enough so you have at least a couple questions that require critical thinking.
You know how they say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger? Well, passing his class will make you stronger than ever. If you're looking for an easy Physics class, look somewhere else. But if you want to learn physics so you can do Statics and Dynamics with ease, this is the one. IMHO, 195 is the best course to take with him.
This class in general will have you rethinking life especially with Professor Mona. If you struggle with paying attention in lectures or have a short attention span, maybe lean towards someone else but if you enjoy challenges and are good at staying focused during lectures, he's a great option. Overall, he is a funny and interesting professor.
Professor Mona is my favorite professor. He is the most talented lecturer I have ever witnessed; he mixes in fun phrases and jokes, yet never goes off-topic. Homework and exams are challenging (no curves), as they require much problem solving, but they prepare you very well. Overall, he has you struggle, then succeed, then truly appreciate physics.
HE IS THE WORST. DO NOT TAKE HIM WHATEVER NO MATTER WHAT. YOU NEED TO HAVE A PHD IN PHYSICS TO JUST PASS THE CLASS. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am in 196 now, and I am so grateful I took Claude for 195. Don't take shortcuts, learn the notation he uses, it may seem like extra work now, but will pay off when you get to 196. He has the best legibility and visuals you will ever get, as he also majored in art. You need to be doing more than just the homework if you want to succeed. PRACTICE!!
I would suggest taking this class if you would like to learn physics, although a majority of the class does not get an A due to his difficult exams so be willing to risk your GPA. However, this is a great class for learning physics and Professor Mona is a caring professor that only aims to help student succeed in future physics courses.
This class will push you to your absolute max, but will ultimately teach you (most likely the hard way) that work ethic, notation, and study habits are essential for any Engineering/STEM major. Difficult lecture and lab material topped with even harder exam material. I usually invested around 25 hours/week + 1 all-nighter/week. Not for the weak.
Very condescending, exams are not like the HW problems at all. The example problems are very easy and different from the exams. In class example: ball drop, on exam: two stars in the universe, which one is pulling which one? I am not even kidding. Don't take this class if you're not a physics major planning to have a PHD in physics.
Professor Mona's PHYS195 class is challenging but rewarding. His lectures can be confusing, but he's approachable and the labs are fun. Using unstuckstudy with the free textbook helped me stay on top of the material.
he makes the class harder than it should be. people keep saying oh hes hard but you learn - NO! you can learn in a class and not have it be difficult. this is community college not university
Prof Mona's class is challenging but rewarding. His exams are challenging, but his grading is very fair and very clear for everything. I believe they are very insightful and very relevant so I wouldn't skip them. Best advice: Be prepared to do work -- labs + hw. Having material outside of lectures, either AI to ask questions & hw textbook!
Tough grader. Most students say that his class is hard because he wants you to learn but I struggled to even pass the class and feel like I learned nothing. You HAVE to study and do each HW problem to understand it. Take him if you feel like you need a challenging class but if you don't want that, take another prof. Put at least 10 hr per week.
i took classical mechanics with Prof Mona over 10 years ago. i remember his class being really hard and it pushed me to my limits. it made me doubt my future aspirations as an engineer. currently im a chemical engineer & looking back this class was one of the hardest for sure. im thankful however, it strength-trained me to complete the marathon.
Mona is a fantastic teacher, his lectures are amazing and they are very intriguing/entertaining. The online homework is a lot, but there is plenty of time to do it. The exams are incredibly difficult, but he allows ways to earn back points. He answers any questions you may have and he helps you develop a sound understanding of the topics at hand.
BEST professor ever. Class is very clearly structured, there is no mystery what is required of you. Mona's lectures and engaging and entertaining, with funny quips and mind-blowing discoveries. Exams are DIFFICULT. You must understand the material to do well, as the questions make you apply knowledge in new ways. Pick his brain, you will learn!
Professor Mona is a great lecturer and is super passionate, but his test questions are tricky. However, he gives a lot of partial credit so it's manageable. Lab reports are easy grade boosters, but exams are quite difficult. However, if you understand the material, he will give you enough partial credit to do well in the class.
claude was VERY knowledgeable on every topic we covered, and his lectures were always very fun to listen to. he is however quite a tough grader, and there isn't that much feedback on exams and lab reports. access outside of class is fairly limited. exams are insane, study HARD and make sure you have a deep understand otherwise you will not pass.
