She loves her students and loves to teach. Class covers a ton of material, tests are open note, open book, but the study groups are a MUST for a good grade. They cover every questions in the study guide, you can't go wrong. Claudia is passionate and funny

Very clear about standards. Study sessions are very helpful. Basically if you go to the sessions, you will get an "A" on the test. She is very approachable and she'll even give you advise on your rough drafts. Rock on Close!
She was an awsome teacher who really got me excited about eastern philosophy. Her class isn't to hard although she tends to grade hard on the essays
She is an awesome teacher. She made philosophy interesting and easy to understand. True, you should go to study sessions because it covers a lot on whats on the test. I recommend Close to anyone.
She is a fun teacher. She lets you use noted and book on tests. Overall a great teacher, is always willing to accomidate students.
Claudia Close proclaims her assigned text for PHIL 9 is a graduate text; I have no doubt in aggreeing judging from the difficulty of this text's essays. This was actually a positive for me, but her pedantry and patronizing authority was a turn-off!
She is the best teacher. she loves teaching and loves her students. A wonderful person. She is a excellent teacher, but is kind of difficult.
Great teacher :) Claudia makes philoshophy fun because she's SOOO into it- it's great! There are a few papers and you really have to "think" in this class (duh....philosophy)-- but it's not bad.
Claudia is challenging, engaging and funny. Plus, she will preview your essay rough drafts and make suggestions. Study groups a MUST.
I just had her for a summer session philo class. Although she does grade slightly hard on the essays she certainly makes sure you understand the material well. Only the small minded and short of wit would find her class anything but fully enjoyable.
Non-western is one of the best college classes i've ever taken. Claudia is witty and smart. If you put in the effort to learn the material, she will gladly help you out. Study sessions help if you need it. You can learn a lot if you want to.
I got an A and learned ALOT, but her lecures were at times confusing because she went too fast and left out important information needed for context. When students had questions she often didn't "have time" to answer but she always "had time" for a long soliloquy about herself--very annoying.
A very interesting class and she did a good job. I think she plays little "gotcha" games with her questions on tests. She gives very good analogys.
awesome. love her teaching style.
Best class ever!
Great teacher easy grade
I really enjoyed her intro to philosophy class, i loved her stories and the essays we read and wrote.
AMAZING CLASS. She is very engaged, but you do have to do some serious reading. If you've been looking for a class to explain all those buddhist/hindu philosophies you keep hearing about--this is the one. Don't be a know-it-all in this class. She hate

regular comedian. genuine intelectualist with a practical side. easy to learn from.
best class I have taken at cabrillo she is wonderful and the class is soo interesting and very easy to get an A in
Loved her class, she was very interesting and VERY nice. I highly recommend her, and her husband Mike Newkirk.
Claudia is the most insensitive teacher I have ever had at Cabrillo. Everyday she comes into class telling us she's in a bad mood, she will pick on the under dogs, tell us not to take it personally,& keep a smile on her face, she is a wonderful teacher if you are not the blunt of her jokes. If you screw up, she will single you out & let everyone k
If your just going to take a philosophy class just for your general ed dont take philosophy of the mind. Its a horrible class, the readins are way to difficult and its just to much work and effort to understand for a 3 unit class. Over half the class has dropped and I'm about to as well.
She is a great teacher, the lessons are difficult to grasp sometimes (in nonwestern philosophy) but she is very straightforward and will answer any questions. I learned a lot and enjoyed the class. She IS a funny lady, look forward to many stories and jokes about her life, she's a very interesting woman and very nice.
Like Claudia says, this is not a class for parrots, if you want a prof. who will tell you what to think and expect you to parrot it back this is not your class. Claudia gives you the tools and access to her and any help you need, but you have to get over yourself and ask for it. I felt that not only did I learn a lot but I was prepared for a Univ.
AWESOME teacher. She's compassionate yet firm, and has everything a teacher really should. Also her teaching style is wonderful.
a decent teacher, I can tell that she is a very brilliant women, however I feel i know more about her prior job at American Expresss and her love of horses than I do about philo. does not weight tests very much, most of the grade is from papers, gets a little crazy at times which is good, helped me stay awake,
I loved her Eastern Philosophy class...I learned way more than I ever thought I would....and actually felt I could apply much of if to my life:)
Funny in a wry, sarcastic kind of way. Crazy/enthusiastic but you can tell she loves her job. Home work & tests (open note & open book!) were totally reasonable. See her about your papers before you turn them in, (she's very helpful if you listen carefully & ask questions!) & laugh at her jokes & you'll do fine. One of the best teachers on campus!
Don't listen to anyone who complains about Claudia. She is one of the best teachers ever. Her stories are relevant to the topic and she makes an often dry subject fun and interesting. This is not an easy A (at least not for me), but well worth the effort. Difficult reading, but that's because the writers are, for the most part dead white guys.
Claudia is a fun and interesting teacher, she can explain things relatively well and has a great grasp of the subject matter. Her papers are a little difficult if you don't do the reading, so if you don't like reading stuff written by dead white guys, then this might not be your cup o'tea. Other than that, she is very "Santa Cruz"
Horrible Teacher, never attends class on time, even on test dates! Teaching strategy is horrific
She is such a great teacher. The material in eastern philo is not always easy but she does an excellent job of making it understandable. Ask questions and speak up if you are unclear because you will get lost otherwise, and she is more than willing to help. Also, great sense of humor.
Claudia is an amazing educator. She REALLY cares about her students, and philosophy it shows. She gets a lot of her test questions from the lecture so pay attention! If you need help just ask, and go to the study sessions, esspecially if you miss a class. It's not hard to learn in her class, it probably be hard NOT to.
Claudia is a great professor! I loved attending her class even thought it was at 9:30 AM. She tells lots of stories (usually anecdotes from her days working for American Express or her love of horses) but each story is very relevant and helped me understand the material much better. She's very approachable and extremely nice!
Her class is what I look forward to at the end of the day. Occasionally, we have to delete material because she spends enough time as is necessary to guarantee that everybody understands. I love her open note/open book exam policy. It really drives home the material. Her sarcastic wit and off-color anecdotes are priceless. I highly recommend her!
Absolutely LOVE Claudia. Interesting and relevant lectures that really make the coursework easy to grasp. If you don't understand something, say so. She is great about staying on a topic until everyone grasps the concept. As for papers..she expects to see rough drafts..do it..it's in your benefit! Hope to take more of her classes.
she poured her heart and soul in to teaching, i always felt like she broadened my mind, and gave me perspective on the entire world!! empowering, hilareous, fair, easy to work with. sweet, concerned, understanding. i love her stories!! highly recommend her to ANYONE! <3
Claudia was a great professor, really wanted her students to learn and understand the material. She invests in outside help out of her own pocket for her students. gives very useful studyguides for tests which are not very hard if you use the guide. Definitely recommend any class she teaches.
Claudia was a great professor, really wanted her students to learn and understand the material. She invests in outside help out of her own pocket for her students. gives very useful studyguides for tests which are not very hard if you use the guide. Definitely recommend any class she teaches.
She's not easy thats for sure. However, she will help you to become a much better student. She challenges without making the course load unreasonable. I think many teachers at cabrillo are too easy and let poor students slide through. Not the case with Claudia, if you do not meet her requirements you will not pass. And she is very clear about that.
shes a really great teacher, she really made the class come alive to me. i did not think she was approachable outside of the classroom however, at many times seeming mocking of peoples situations by immediately relating it to herself. its a great class but don't walk into her office like you would her class shes a hard assss
loved her and the class
She's not that easy, but if you go to class, attempt to read, take the quizes, and have her help you one on one on the papers, you will do well. I could never understand the text books, as I am not very interested in philosophy anyway, but towards the last half of the class if you beg her nicely, she will let you take the quizes open book in class.
She is disorganized and wastes class time. She is like a talking textbook, very boring and doesn't relate anything very well. Has a random way of grading papers and is condescending. I was very interested in Philosophy before taking her class, now I have lost all interest. I don't hate her, but I woudn't recommend her or take her other classes.
she is little bit hard on grading..i really like her but she is not easy..youe really need to work for that A. if you need help she is there to help you out..the tests are open book but if you have not read the material and undarstand it it wont help you...the tests are hard..bust she is a nice person and i do like her class..
Claudia is an amazing teacher. I really enjoyed her Contemporary Moral Issues class. She is really well organized and very honest with her students. She will proof read all of your papers for you before handing them in and guarantee an A. Overall, really good teacher and she made me interested in Philosophy.
I looked forward to coming to this class every single day. keeps you very interested throughout most lectures. tells hilarious and interesting stories that relate to philosophy. If she wasn't a philosophy teacher, she could probably be a stand up comedian. Definitely take this class if your considering philosophy.
Close is the best for Philo. She actually wants you to learn though, and doesn't treat it like an "easy A" GE class. She is very smart, and really helpful.
she is very nice and funny. she genuinely wants you to succeed and consistently want to help you. she even hires a tutor out of her pocket to help with the tests. also she is very funny and kinda weird
It wasn't a hard class, but I also didn't learn anything. She is inconsistent with her grading on papers, I got an A on one, while an almost identical one got a C. Talks down to the class, is always late, lectures the whole class on who bad the papers were. She is very rude and disrespectful. You are graded on 4, 50 question exams and 3 papers.
Claudia is my favorite addiction, I've taken 2 of her classes so far, and want to take more! You leave her class feeling enlightened & smarter. Study groups a must, fun but difficult papers. Do the reading or you'll fall behind. her stories make me smile, she knows TONS about philosophy and life. she makes plenty of time for students after hours.
She is very cute and very fun. i loved just listening to her. she has wonderful passion and loves her students. BUT this class is not easy, she grades really hard and the essays are IMPOSSIBLE to get an A on she has lots of quizzes so you MUST come to class, all in all if you have time to commit yourself take it! but dont think your breeze this one!
claudia is the best teacher at cabrillo. her lectures were fun and entertaining. the assignments werent that bad 4 50 point exam open book open notes. lots of quizzes, and 3 papers.
I took her class in the Fall of '07, and she's so amazing that I think about her to this day! She's one of those professors that you'll always remember. She makes lectures lively and something to look forward to. You'd be doing yourself a favor if you took one of her classes. It's a bit hard, you have to earn your grade, but she is very helpful!
didnt like her teaching style, very strict on grading written assignments
Claudia is amazing. She's entertaining, and her classes are very scholarly. There is much to learn in her class. It is not an easy A, but an A you can be proud of.
Great teacher. Hard class. Brilliant and knows so much about religion and philosophy. Since its a philo class its pretty hard and the readings are really hard but she goes over them in class usually. Lots of pop quizes on the reading but she allows group and open book. Hard class but learned tons. Hard essays but short. Hard work, good outcome.
I was intimidated by the readings & all the different philosophers but stuck with it & got an "A".Claudia is EXTREMELY helpful, will review essays & let you know what to correct before turning it in.open book tests, take good notes & they're not bad.plus, she pays out of her own pocket a tutor to do study sessions before each test, including final.
Claudia is totally stoked to be teaching philosophy and it's quite obvious. She exudes droves of charisma. Rambles about her horse-riding days often, but it's entertaining. if you attend class, trudge through the text, genuinely try to understand the material, it may completely change your opinion of religion, as it certainly did for me.
Claudia is an incredibly insightful and amazing woman. She makes her lectures very entertaining. She is very organized and gives you a really good syllabus at the beginning of the semester. She cares a lot too, she gets a TA to help students which helps a lot. Exams are open note, essays are difficult
Claudia is awesome; I've taken all of her classes now. She's very entertaining and knowledgeable, and very helpful. If you just ask her to look at your rough drafts she'll basically tell you what you need to fix to get an A. Her teaching really stuck with me, and I would take more with her if I could.
Shes ok. She is definitely the loudest teacher I have ever had. She can get way into it when she talks. And sometimes she goes off on stories about horses. She loves all of the above answers on the tests so heads up on that. O and take lots of notes in her class! They come in handy for the tests as well.
Claudia is definitely a character. Her delivery method is entertaining and insightful. Take lots of notes, she gives plenty of great hints throughout class. I would gladly take one of her classes again.
Easy class, took it during summer when it's supposed to be harder. Read for own benefit, notes are all you need and it's what she writes on the board. Open note tests and essays are easy. Take home quizzes are easy too.
Got to love when a teacher wants students to pass the class, you can turn rough drafts in as many times as you can so you can make your grade the best you can. All in all she is tough but she is a great teacher and would suggest her to students.
Interesting class.. If you are a linear thinker be prepared for step outside your comfort zone. In the News articles suck but she will grade your rough draft for you so it makes it easier
Entertaing professor but difficult class. Has very high standards for writing assignments, though she is willing to give feedback prior to turning in. Tests are pretty straight forward and open note; just watch out for the essays.
Claudia is a wonderful prof. to take Intro to Philo with. If you go to her office hours she is more than encouraging and genuinely wants her students to learn the material. Just don't slack off, take good notes (half of which she'll spell out for you on the board), and do the reading. That's any college class really. Don't listen to the haters.
An amazing teacher. Philo 10 with her was great. I had little interest in Philosophy and was just taking the class for fun and it turned out to be my favorite class this semester. I highly recommend this class with Claudia Close, she isn't easy but she explains everything thoroughly. She's super nice and is always helpful when you ask for it.
Claudia's course in philo 10 is a really rewarding class. I could see how she wouldn't be for everybody, but her teaching style worked for me. She keeps things interesting and sparks up controversial conversations that make people think. I would recommend her, and plan on taking another one of her courses.
She is very well organized, and very strict. If you mess up on a paper or test she will not help. Before you give in the paper or take the test she is a good helper. But no sympathy for lack of punctuality.
Want to take her class? Don't.
I was really excited to have Close, but I'm very disappointed in her class. She thinks that she is the smartest person in the room and ignores questions/comments. She talks down to students and on the test there was an incorrect question but she wouldn't listen to us. Notes suck, the discussions suck, she has made me hate philosophy! DON'T TAKE HER
University level intro to Philosophy. If you're grown up, ready to focus and want a comprehensive intro class, you found it. Not for slackers. Get your game on before this opportunity retires.
Claudia CLose is a good teacher overall. Her lectures are very good it is fdefinitely a class you will want to go for every single class or you will miss a lot. The class overall was pretty hard, but the material is interesting. I would recommend this class to people who are interested in philosophy and are prepared to do some work.
Claudia Close is by far my favorite professor I have had at Cabrillo yet. She is brilliant. Her lectures are interesting and intellectual. You will leave class thinking about what she lectured on. She posts all her power points online prior to the class, print them out and take notes directly on them i my suggestion. Start your papers early.
BEWARE. I started Claudia's class loving philosphy and have left very uninterested. Her grading is just unrealistic and very frustrating. She is very biased and vague in her lectures. I've Googled answers to take home quizzes... and got them wrong- I think that's proof to how impossible her grading is!
She really knows her stuff & keeps her lectures interesting. She always tries to answer everyone's questions, despite what some other people have posted here. Her essays are tough but if you go to her office hours she helps A TON! The only negative thing I have to say is she gets off schedule a lot. Otherwise, definately consider taking her class!
Deticated teacher tries to help her students as much as she can.Puts everything online.Tests seem confusing, but aren't that hard if you utilize your 1pg.cheat sheet(front/back).Essays are hard, but if you have her peer reviewed and revise you'll get a good grade. Claudia tries to be available and helpful.Made class interesting
Claudia is amazing! She's really passionate about her subject and has a great sense of humor. You'll do well if iyou attend her office hours for paper help. Everything is online and easy to access at anytime, except homework assignments, which she hands out periodically-so come to class regularly!
Easy. If you are a slap, and do not like doing work, you wont make it in her class, or any other class in a college setting. As a matter of fact, you wont make it in life. Do work, and get an A.
She's amazing. If you pay attention in class, you'll do well for yourself. She wants her students to succeed. Her papers are probably the hardest part of the class (she'll look them over beforehand if you go to office hours). I walked out of that class more interested in philosophy than I had been walking in. Good teacher. Engaging lectures.
She's fantastic. Her lectures are clear, her examples are funny and helpful. She posts her class notes/assignments online. Will read rough drafts of papers and provide feedback. The exams are fair.
Claudia is Amazing. She helps you achieve the best possible grade, but you have to do the work. She reads rough drafts and has all powerpoints online. She also gives study guides and allows notes. If you are intrested in philosphy take her class!!!
really good teacher if you are interested. but if you are like me an just need this class as a requirement this is the last teacher you want to take. she is clear with what she wants, papers are hard as well as exams. take if your intrigued with the subject not if you are looking for an easy A. she gives no extra credit....
Claudia is a very good professor for her area of study. I agree with most everyone else's comments you'll read- if you're interested, or if you plan on working hard, then this class will be fun and satisfying. Her exams are easy, she gives you a 8x11 sheet study guide at your disposal. Papers are challenging, don't expect to BS your way through it!
Claudia is an amazing teacher! She is so passionate about philosophy and makes it easy for students to relate to what she's talking about. She allows a full double sided paper for the 4 tests all semester. She assigns 2 papers which are difficult so don't procrastinate! If you try and show enthusiasm she is eager to help. Take her class!!!!
Amazing teacher! I wasn't looking forward to taking a philosophy class but it ended up being awesome! I learned so much in this class, and it helps that Claudia is so fired up in her lectures, that you can't help but get fired up! Tests are cake, papers are challenging, but she wants you to succeed. If I can get an A in this class, you can too!
Claudia is a kind person. But her knowledge of the Eastern traditions is solely cerebral. She has no experiential knowledge of these arts, and even referred to Loa Tzu as a chauvinist for his analogy of the passive and active masculine and feminine principles of the cosmos. I just suggest she enlighten herself a bit more about enlightenment.
She is very special but if you like ethics and philosophy you will be fine. Very difficult case studies in class but use the help she gives you and you will pass the cases. The exams only 50 questions and you are allowed to have notes and there is a class prior the test with a tutor to help study for it.
I thought this was going to be a good class until I went on the first day. Her intro to us was I'm a B***H and I'm not easy, Hi I'm Claudia Close. She is very hard to understand and she doesn't even follow her own syllabus. Many times she comes into class late and keeps us over. She talks about her personal life then crams her lecture into 10 mins.
Great Instructor. Took Eastern Philo. Highly disagree with other posts here. True, she can come off as strong willed, but she helps you every step of the way. Go to her office for case studies and other Q's, really helps. Taking West Philo in the fall. Exams were fair, not trying to trip you up. If you are interested in Philo, take her class.
She is not easy, but I am a better person for taking her class. She's can be a bit LOUD, but she's great in every other way. Follow instructions closely because she is a stickler, but she's very thorough. Her assignments are advanced and if you rely on plagiarism, don't bother because they're not designed that way. 43
Claudia is completely brilliant. Some of the most interesting and immersive lectures I've ever had. She has high expectations-don't take her course if you aren't serious about your education. She has led me to fall in love with philosophy. One of Cabrillo's finest, don't miss an opportunity to learn from her!!
Claudia is a pretty good teacher. She explains fairly well and we didnt use the book all that much, mainly just follow the powerpoints and youll be fine. Her case studies are hard but if you spend more than a day or two on it you should do fine. Final is just a test. I would take another class from her.
I loved Claudia. She is such a lively teacher who really causes her students to think. She did a great job introducing philosophy, and I wish I could take more classes. The tests are pretty easy--just take notes off the powerpoints. I will admit, she does sometimes lose track of time and not go as in depth in her lectures.
Claudia was by far my favorite teacher last semester! At first her description of the course load is intimidating, but as the course unfolds you realize that it is not so. She says there will be pop quizzes but every quiz administered was either open book or take home. Didn't use the text book past the first week- use the power points for studying!
I loved her class. It's super interesting, she's very clear and intelligent, and we learned a fair bit for a truly entry level class. I can't recommend it enough. Also, this class fulfills social science requirements, so you can take it instead of history or something. Almost no homework, easy quizzes, fair tests. She grades writing the hardest.
Claudia was a good and enthuastic teacher. Her class was well laid out and it didn't require a whole lot of effort to get an A. She is very animated. Sometimes I found myself get cut off when asking questions but I managed to have them answered. She is a very thoughtful teacher. Her class is worth taking!
AWESOME PROFESSOR! Loved the class and lecture. Really good at guiding discussion so it contributes to learning instead of meandering. Funny and has endearing personality. She awakened my passion for philosophy.
So far we are two classes behind because she keeps going over the same stuff and telling lots of stories that drag on to make her points clear. I appreciate the clarity but worry that the rest of the semester will get rushed due to lagging.
Absolutely wonderful professor. Maintains good classroom control and stays on topic, but still manages to be very engaging. Clearly loves teaching and will make you love the material she's teaching. Assignments are fairly easy but meaningful and tests are a breeze if you pay attention during lectures. Good discussion leader.
Claudia is amazing. She's funny and intelligent. She is incredibly helpful (when you ask for it!) and she knows how to keep a group of 60 students interested for 1 12 hours. She encourages students helping each other with the homework the day that it's due (take home quizzes) and can explain the most difficult subjects with ease.
Claudia is awesome! She gives a lot of personal anecdotes. You don't HAVE to read the textbook to pass the quizzes or tests but it adds enrichment. She puts a lot of importance on the two case studies, theyre not super difficult but they're worth a lot of points. She'll help you with your rough drafts if you go in to her office hours.
This was my first philosophy class and I loved it! The teacher is great and provides many different ways to understand a concept. She is a great teacher for all learning types, I learned just by listening to her lectures and reading out of the book. Clear study guides provided for the test, study sessions available that are really good!
Very nice professor. She goes off topic often to tell her own stories, but gets most of the material covered each class. She is extremely enthusiastic and really enjoys her job. Would highly recommend taking her class.
Claudia is a great teacher. Her class was always fun and interesting. Case study's can be difficult but she gives you plenty of time to speak to her to get help on them. Quizes and exams are tough but you are allowed some notes of the exams. Very straightforward and great way to start off on learning philosophy.
Claudia is wonderful. shes very clear on what she wants. I took her for philo 4 and took her recently for philo10. a couple paper or case studies, she gives examples papers for you to refer to. her exams are tricky but pay attention to wording. just know the philosophers and their theories.
Just finished nonwestern philosophy, which has been my favorite class thus far! I also had Claudia for intro which I found to be more difficult. I love that she's an experienced teacher, meaning great lectures and she's hilarious! She's very comfortable with the material she teaches. Also I can't help but note that she truly wants you to succeed!
Most interesting professor i've had. Her stories make you remember when it comes to taking tests
Excellent teacher and orator. Very clear directions and assignments. Very organized, honest, and punctual.
She gives you a sheet of notes for tests, so that helps a lot. Case studies were difficult so be prepared to read the material and try to understand it thoroughly!
Professor Close is one of the better instructors I have taken at Cabrillo. She cares about her students, and really tries to make sure students understand her lectures. She really made philosophy fun to learn. Would definitely take her classes again. Case studies are difficult, so give yourself plenty of time.
Claudia is a gem. I hated philosophy before I took her class, but she actually got me to think! Also, the tutor Misha is worth getting help from. He is very knowledgeable and makes things click.
Took this class for general ed requirement and she is a great teacher. Tests are a little hard but she allows a page of notes during the exam. Her lectures are very entertaining. There are 2 extensive case studies but she uses very current topics to make it more interesting. Great teacher.
Professor Close is so good at teaching her subject at she made me want to become a Philosophy major. She can get a little behind in her lectures, but always makes sure to put only the material covered in class on her tests. The quizzes are mostly take-home, and she lets you go to her office hours to get feedback on the two written assignments.
One of the best professors I've had. Her lectures are actually relevant to the tests and she takes time to answer questions. Make sure you remember the hints she gives out about the tests. If you show up to class, take notes, don't procrastinate on the case studies, and do the study guides, you'll get an A.
One of my favorite teachers at Cabrillo. She's very passionate about philosophy and clearly loves her job, she has a wonderfully wry sense of humor, and she works very hard to make her lectures interesting and engaging. Her essays are difficult, but she's very clear about her expectations. Made me fall in love with philosophy!
if you like to listen to someone yell at you and preach for 1 hour and 30 min then take claudia, she is great at putting you to sleep, making you think philosophy is a hard lame class when the reality of the matter is that the stuff, is some of the coolest stuff around, but her teach style is all lecture. if you want the worst teacher choose cladia
AMAZING! Her lectures are extremely accessible & relate to the reading. LOTS of reading but you should still show up to class even you haven't done it. Class discussions help, the class is group-based work & you have 4 short 1-page papers due throughout the semester. NO FINAL EXAM! Would take again!!
Claudia single handedly killed any interest I had in studying philosophy. She is rude, and grades you based on how much you suck up to her. I've had a few profs in my day, Claudia is easily the worst. Pretentious, obnoxious, self-righteous, and petty. I find that students who are also pretentious enjoy Claudia. If you are not, then don't take her.
Had her for intro to phil. She gives two 4-paged paper. She is very funny and passionate in philosophy which is also very infectious. Treats you as a university student and always trying to improve Cabrillo . I want to take all her classes now.
One class with Professor Close and I switched my major to philosophy. She is so passionate and inspiring in her classes. You don't need to show up to every class to pass the tests, but the more you show up and participate, the better you will do on your papers. Grades are points added up, not an average, which helps a lot!
I took intro to philosophy with Claudia and really enjoyed it. She gives you a double sided typed or handwritten page for all the exams as well as a study guide. Almost all the quizzes are take home. Her lectures are engaging and she loves to tell stories about her life. One word of advice, she grades tough on the essays, but there are only two.
Claudia's class was my most disappointing experience at Cabrillo. She doesn't follow her syllabus or test schedule and is condescending and rude. She spent the majority of class talking about her personal life, and crammed 1 hour of lecture into 10 minutes. If you answer wrong, she will ridicule you. Completely does not prepare you for exams.
Her lectures are horrible- she falls behind because of her own personal issues and then does a lecture in 10 minutes and gives us a quiz and expects us to know everything. She gave us little background knowledge on the case studies and grades very harshly. She relates what we learn to her own life and its extremely boring and doesnt help you learn.
Great Professor! Sit up front, give your opinions in class and ask questions. She goes fast on her power-point presentations. Take notes on paper or computer. Study the power points for each section at home(print her power-points?) (she has links on her website), Get free tutoring for writing a case study (if you have never done one) & go to class!
Very passionate about philosophy however she grades based off of her personal feelings. Class is often inflicted based upon personal issues, therefore reducing 1 hour lectures to ten minutes. When writing papers try to agree with her views if you would like to pass. i don't recommend this class if you're just taking it for credits.
Claudia is one of the best teachers! She makes her classes interesting! Yes, she tells relevant stories, but only to add to the point, such as make a theory or statement more clear! She is a tough grader but that is only because she does not want to cheat you of your education. *All PowerPoints are all online. *She allows one cheat sheet per test.
The class consisted of 4 Test (50 pts each), 12 quizzes (5-10 pts each) and 2 case studies (essays worth 100 pts each). Most quizzes were take home and I was able to get A's on them and the exams by studying the class notes and the POWER POINTS which she post's online. You get a cheat sheet for exams! DON'T PROCRASTINATE on the Case Studies!
Clearly states how assignments are graded and how to achieve the grade you want. Attend lectures because often hints at certain parts of lecture that will be on tests. Make sure to do your case studies on time!!! Take advantage of the cheat sheet she allows and make one. Really good and helpful instructor just not the right subject for me.
Her lectures are entertaining and insightful, definitely worth showing up for. I really appreciated her teaching style. She is very clear about her expectations, it's easy to keep track of your grade, and she is very approachable.
Claudia is a kind, forgiving teacher willing to accommodate your needs or clarify any confusion. Lectures can feel slow and tedious, I felt that I learned more about her personal life than the course material. But she is a fair grader and does not give an overwhelming amount of work. Go to office hours for your case studies. So helpful!
She's phenomenal. Very entretaining and funny. Talks a lot about her personal life, however she never fails to tie it back into the lecture and relate the event she's talking about with the topic being discussed in class. Love her.
Claudia! She is a beautiful being. I so dearly enjoy her personality and I would love to hang out with her outside of class because thats how awesome she is. Her non western philosophy class is brilliant and she truly inspires me to think and become a better human.
Claudia is great. She lets you know exactly what she wants from you and grades accordingly. I have seen people say that she will give you a poor grade if your opinions don't align with hers and that has not been my experience at all. As a philosophy teacher she loves when you disagree with her, you just need to back it up with evidence. Take her!
Claudia is absolutely amazing. Hilarious, kind, and clear. She will tell you exactly how she will be grading and what is on the test. If you are EVER confused about anything, email her or go to her office hours!! Participation is essential, but just email her if you can't make it to class and you should be good. Study sessions before the test!!
Show up to class and listen to the lectures and you'll pass the tests no problem. She has a lot of good examples in her lectures that help you understand the concepts. I recommend her if you're really interested in philosophy.
Claudia is a great woman. Her classes are a bit harder than what I'm used to at Cabrillo, but the assignments are well-explained and she is more than willing to work with you through any hang-up you might have. I definitely recommend checking out PHILO-17, even if it doesn't really seem like your thing.
I took Claudia for two separate classes during my time at Cabrillo, and loved her as a professor both times. She makes you work for a good grade, but if you show up and put in effort you will do well and enjoy the course. Her ethics class specifically changed my life and I still think about it (over 2 years later).
I started the semester with a genuine interest in philosophy, half way through the semester that feeling is completely gone. Constantly talks down, belittles, and is just plain rude to students, starts class late, rants about HER OWN PERSONAL PROBLEMS, and doesn't give any guidance or help for exams. Wouldn't recommend taking any class with Claudia
I found Claudia's unilateral dismissal of arguments in opposition to hers to be completely out of place in a philosophy class. It is difficult to take a philosophy class where there is no room to explore the world of ideas. I would not recommend Claudia as a philosophy professor and especially not as a first one.
This class was hard. I have been to private school most of my schooling career and have has tough classes, but this class was one that I have never experienced. Your grade is based on 4 tests, 2 papers, and take home quizzes. The papers are worth the most and she is really tough on grading them. You really have to study and put all hours in.
She is way to rough on grading papers. I have gotten A's in all of my English/Philo classes my whole life, but she would give the whole class low grades and tell us how shockingly bad our papers were. Writing for a Philo class is different, and she would rather bash us than make us better. Her ego filled the room so much I could hardly breathe.
Interesting coursework with grades based on a few exams, quizzes and three papers. Don't turn in work late! She teaches at a bit of a higher level than Cabrillo with papers requiring some planning. She tells you what she wants! Lectures are a bit abstract and tend to wander off topic. Exams were open book, not really learning. Focus on the papers!
she assigns very few assignments, but those few are hard. she's available to help and wants you to do well. her lectures are very fun and informative. had a fantastic time in her class and learned so much would highly recommend, but you'll get out of it what you put in.
First time taking a philosophy class and it was pretty challenging, but still managed to do well. She's a brilliant professor. I liked the way she related a lecture/philosopher/idea to a real life scenario because it made it memorable and easier to understand. The case studies consisted of great issues. It was all lecturing and very littlegroupwork
Get ready to hate philosophy!!! Really this teach takes everything enjoyable about Ethics and philosophy and turns it into a nightmare. Im actually a pretty ethical guy, but after a month in this teachers class, I am ready to just walk out her door every single class. She doesnt let you explore ideas and she least helpful teacher.
Claudia is probably the best teacher that Cabrillo has. If you get an opportunity to take her class do it! You wont regret it, just do the assignment and If you need help dont hesitate in asking her! She is absolutely amazing! This is teacher that is in the students side always willing to help!
This professor is the least ethical teacher I have ever met. She doesnt listen her students in class arguments, she is very against differing views, and her tests/quizzes make no sense. She says she a caring teacher, but acts horrible. She definitely doesnt practice what she preaches. Dont take this Professor!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Horrible class, didnt learn anything useful.
She is supper funny and always has jokes and stories to talk about.
Wonderful lecturer, always has some obscure example that ties perfectly into whatever concept we're discussing. Very few assignments, mostly just quizzes. The Case Studies are the brunt of the work, I recommend not waiting for the day of. Not fun.
This teacher is horrible! She doesnt take into account many differing ideas. She just likes to hear herself talk. She brags about being tech savvy, while also giving up on most of her lower level classes, when things go a rye. She is very inconsiderate to anyone who isnt in her same situation. She lambasts those different from herself.
This was the worst professor Ive ever had. She is completely blind to diverse cultures and issues. She doesnt seem to care about others ideas that are different than hers. She completely ignores all issues that dont concern herself or people she cares about.
This class made me hate ethics. This teacher explains ethics in the least appealing way. She doesnt consider both sides of the issues. She doesnt care about those who think for themselves, and she talks down to those who are just trying to learn. She suggests that if youre privileged you should give away all you stuff, and ask for nothing.
Get ready to hate philosophy. Really this professor makes you hate the subject, and definitely dont take this class if youre not a philosophy major. I took it thinking it would be an enjoyable way to get some credits, but I was very wrong. This teacher ignores all opposing ideas or thoughts and makes you hate (with a passion) philosophy (ethics).
I wouldnt consider Claudia a PHILO. professor as much as I would call her an ethical tyrant. Her dismissal of opinions that dont completely agree with her perspective, makes it nearly impossible to learn. Her class is basically a giant no Im better than you contest, and is in no way helpful in gaining useful skills. Dont take this class.
Horrible Professor; inspires close mindedness, doesnt seem to care about ethics, just likes to hear herself talk, doesnt consider differing opinions. Is a strong advocate for putting others down. Cares about equal, but only on her terms. Very unfair grader; gives good grades to those who kiss up to her. Take another class if you just need credits
Claudia's lectures are so fun, she is fabulous at applying theories to real world scenarios that people are able to relate to. When the pandemic hit she was quick to be flexible with paper due dates. Stick to her essay rubric or else your grade will suffer. Take advantage of her essay "freebies"!!! She's always open to questions, thoughts, etc.
This professor was horrible, she basically preached all day about random situations, and rebuked anyone who disagreed with her. Seriously if you have a differing opinion from hers, she will mock you and grade your papers way down. She is the least ethical ethics teacher I have ever taken. She is extremely one sided, and wont listen to anyone.
You may have read in other reviews that case studies are important. As of Spring '20, they are no longer part of the Philo 4 curriculum. Claudia is a great professor who tells funny stories about her own life and readily engages in debate with students. She has a big personality which makes her lectures interesting! A bit intimidating but very kind
Horrible Professor, she just goes on and on about boring stories about her life. Then she lectures about the ethics of various scenarios, but has a very warped view of them. She literally says that you should help all people, but then says you should only help the minority groups of society. Shes a total hypocrite!!!!!!
This was one of the worst teachers I have ever had. She does not, in anyway, inspire healthy learning in Ethics. She is the least ethical teacher I have ever had. She doesnt consider differing views, she only focuses on one side, and barely teaches. She just talks about herself for an hour and crams her lesson in the last 20 minutes of class.
I really wanted to like this class. I heard her lectures were great, so I was hoping she'd have online ones. There are 0. The class consists of reading 100 pg per week, tests, & papers. I feel like I'm learning nothing this way, the material is extremely hard to follow w/out lectures or interaction of some kind. If u need structure, don't bother.
You are expected to understand readings of philosophers that use antiquated language without ever receiving a lecture on the subjects covered. Claudia assigns 3-4 youtube videos and several very difficult readings, then expects you to have understood everything. She will not make adequate office hour time answer to questions.
The textbook directly conflicts with the answers she says are right on exams. How are we supposed to know you disagree with the textbook if you never clarify your interpretation?
This professor was a nightmare, she just blabbed on and on about her personal problems, and asked you a few subjective questions. If she didn't like your response she would lambast you in front of the class. She was not open to suggestions on how philosophy could be better, just stuck to the same tired old theorist laws and didn't open her mind.
Prof. Close was okay. I appreciated the chance to delve into difficult philosophical sources and, though the case studies were time consuming, the research and process of creating them is worthwhile. While she was flexible with due dates, she provided little support, and no lectures or real interaction. She could spend more time building community.
Taking online classes is hard enough, however this teacher made it even more difficult. She never interacted with us what so ever, no lectures online, only pages and pages of reading so that you can teach your self the material. She took ages to grade papers so you had no idea what to expect when writing your next one. Worst teacher I've ever had.
I do not know what Ms. Close looks like, nor sounds like, nor wants from us. She has never held a class. So I do not think one could define this class as being "taught." Save some money: watch three or four youtube videos, buy the textbook "the moral of the story" and read it cover to cover and maybe join some forums online. You will learn more.
Close is a good teacher but school has made this class unnecessarily difficult. Ive heard good things about her lectures but sadly didnt experience them. Close will listen & write long responses to any questions. Sometimes we didnt see eye to eye but it forced me to create a solid case for my opinion. Quizzes are easy, papers take time.
Claudia is passionate and knowledgeable about Philio but I felt that we can easily get off track. This class is relatively doable if you know the material. Case studies are long and require effort so you cant bs them. I tried hard and that's why I passed. She is always willing to help if you need it just ask and shell tell you the answers.
Claudia was unpleasant and unhelpful throughout the semester. Her feedback on essays ranges from insulting to arrogant. She is unclear in her description of concepts and answers to exam questions directly conflict with information in the assigned textbook readings.
Words cannot describe how bad this teacher is. She used contradictory language when it came to speaking to different groups. She unilaterally dismissed all comments that were at all critical of her or her opinions. She never read or understood any of the opposing views of her classes case studies. Dont take this class.
Claudia is the living embodiment of the downfall of academia. She's not interested in teaching, but elevating the students who parrot her world view above the rabble. If you do not worship her world view she will take it out on your grade. Arrogant and cruel, she spends most of her lecture talking about her personal problems. Avoid at all costs.
The overall organization of this class is horrible. Way too much reading per week and too many quizzes. no lectures, no reaching out from the teacher. seems as though it’s overly political. do not take this class.
Professor Close is an arrogant individual who patronizes those in class discussions who's views differ than hers. She reprimanded the class for not talking during discussion time, then interrupted us and corrected us when we stated our own views. She does not want individual thought, and instead wants her students to politely agree with her.
She is a tough teacher, her classes are not an easy pass. I took 2 classes with her and loved both. I learned a lot, but we covered so much information so quickly it was often hard to keep up and I would find myself memorizing facts but not truly understanding the concepts. Her tests and quizzes were open note so you could easily pass them
Overall pretty good teacher. The papers were discouraging at first but were actually not too bad if you understand the jist of it.
I learned a lot from her class, she is an amazing instructor. If you are having a hard time with the class or outside of school she is understanding, she will make sure you know all of the resources we have available. She definitely loves what she does!
Claudia is amazing! Great lectures, flexible and understanding! I was sick for a long time and she worked with me to complete my assignments! Be prepared to read hundreds of pages, with many small details (who said what), which for me was challenging, but I don't think it's the teachers fault. Great teacher, recommended.
I took Professor Close's philosophy class, ethics class, and participated in her ethics bowl team. She proved to be an inspiring professor who truly cared for her students! Be sure to ask questions if you don't understand the material, she appreciates the effort and it will help you on the papers. Claudia ran a well-oiled machine of a class.
Claudia was a fantastic teacher! Be sure to attend the lectures and ask questions to do well on your papers. It was inspiring to see how much Claudia cares about her students and the lengths she will go to help them succeed. She is the best teacher I've had at Cabrillo.
She is a good instructor and likes to give you feedback and pay attention to the feedback she gives you it helps alot.
This class was very reading heavy and I personally found the grading criteria to be difficult to understand at times. While the professor was accessible and willing to help with essay preparation, essays were difficult to keep up with at times when the reading was particularly heavy.
Claudia is a caring and engaging teacher with fun lectures and real-life examples. While there's extensive reading, attending lectures and watching videos can replace much of it. Few assignments, not overly complicated exams and Claudia is very understanding.
Super sweet lady, will definitely email you back, her material is hard and the exams are rough
Claudia was my favorite teacher at Cabrillo. I took every class she offered. 25 years later, I often think of the material we covered. Her Eastern Philosophy class especially shaped my career as a psychotherapist. Classroom discussions were always engaging. She was supportive and available, writing letters of rec for transfer applications.
Close inspired me. Her classes shaped me into a better writer and deeper thinker. Office hours and tutor groups are so helpful. She really appreciates ppl going to office hours. She asks a lot of her students but provides plenty of support
I'm sure my experience would have been better in a full semester situation. But taking her class over the summer is rough. Each week had at least 3 quizzes, discussion, 200+ pages of reading, plus a research essay every other week and an exam. Expect a lot of reading and assignments
Likely better in person. Was very nice, though was async. When I got sick, she went out of her way to accommodate and let me turn in a paper late, and receive full credit. Lectures would have been nice to better understand the material; it's just YouTube & dense reading. Assignments are fun and fairly lax if you understand the philosophers well.
Professor Close was a fairly challenging but understanding instructor. While the coursework was dense, she was willing to accommodate when needed. unstuckstudy and the class materials made studying more manageable.
Took Ethics in Fall 2024. Extremely dense readings. The papers had very strict guidelines, and she seemed to always take points off for something, even if she had already given feedback that it looked ok. The positive was that you didn't need to complete the last paper if you were happy with your grade on the other papers.
