The absolute worst professor. She has a huge ego about the difficulty of her Gen Chem class and makes it nearly impossible to succeed just to be able to say how difficult her class is. Honors is less work, so save yourselves.
Professor Novack is very knowledgeable in her field. Her tests can be tough but she grades them fairly well. If you keep up with the reading and the practice problems you should do fine. However, that is a lot of work that is not to be underestimated.
Favorite class of freshman year! It was a lot of work, but if you follow through with it you can do very well! Dr. Novack is very smart and friendly! Office hours are really great chances to get to know her.
While Novack has some personality flaws (i.e. huge ego, superiority complex), she does know chem and teaches it well. In class, her abrasive personality may be considered rude by some, but in one-on-one settings like office hours, she is very understanding albeit intimidating at first. Easily one of the most accessible professors I have had so far.
Approachable outside of class. She gives funny and amazing lectures.
Extremely hard class but she knows the material and teaches it well.
Dr. Novack is a really great professor. As long as you do the readings and understand the readings, most problems should come intuitively. If you understand all practice problems, skip recitation until the Wednesday of the exam, where she sometimes gives test questions away. Very accessible outside of class, generally biases exceptional students.
Dr. Novack takes the time to get to know each every one of her 250 students and is truly concerned with seeing you succeed. Although she may be condescending at times and hard to approach, she is very helpful during office hours. Make sure to attend recitations and lectures! Tests are difficult! Try to begin studying at least a week in advance.
Dr. Novack is not a compassionate teacher. If you ask a question she feels is below her, she will simply stare at you for a moment then tell you to read your book. She is very much set in her ways so if her years old slides don't do it for you then youre in for a wild ride.
Does not make accommodations for athletes. She makes it really hard to be successful in her class.
Great woman. Hard subject matter, but if you show genuine interest she will help you. Dont be lazy.
She really cares about her students! The class is very difficult, but is definitely doable. She is amazing and is very useful outside of class too
It is impossible to deny that Novack knows the content inside and out. The only problem is that she is very unapproachable. Her recitations are a life saver as they are the only times when you can get your questions answered. If you do the practice sets, go to recitations, and review the quizzes, you should be fine.
She's a great lecturer and really helped me get a solid grasp of chemistry! You have to work hard to be prepared for the exams. However, I don't like how gossipy she is about other students! She picks favorites and good luck ever getting her to listen to you if you're not one! Reminds me of a mother who I'm always trying to impress, but to no avail
Teaches very well. But go to the SIS (or whatever it's called) sessions and do all the textbook problems. Just taking notes won't prepare you for the sheer difficulty of the questions on the tests / quizzes.
Dr. Novack might show you slides talking about how Chem 11a isn't a "weed out course," but everyone who has taken the class (including her TAs, university BUGS tutors, and previous students) knows it as such. She claims she doesn't want to focus on memorization, but then expects students to have memorized large portions of content to succeed.
Dr. Novack is condescending and has very grandiose delusions about giving students a larger perspective and seems to build her brand around making students do more than just memorize rules, but the strategies she seems to want students to apply are never actually taught or explained, only demonstrated in passing as topics she describes as "easy."
The curriculum revolves around the textbook (her lectures even use identical analogies), and the class in general seems to be designed for a very specific type of student. If you don't get things on the first try good luck catching uponly extra credit will save you. She tries to be nice but must not really mean it because she's openly judgmental.
I know Dr. Novack means well, but she seems to expect more from us than she can deliver. She isn't necessarily mean, just intimidating, but comes across as condescending sometimes. Even when I thought I studied enough, I hadn't. The course is geared towards a specific type of student that 1. genuinely likes chem and 2. is on top of things.
Unkind and a terrible teacher. Material made tricky but for no reason. Took orgo and realized I am very good at chem and learned literally nothing from her class except how to deal with her unapproachable personality.
She gives very inspiring lectures. But with this big amount of coursework, the lecture time is not enough for you to get an A. Much more time needs to put into preview, textbook problem, and other materials.
Novack seems to take it upon herself to punish students she thinks are lazy. If you perform poorly because of her inflexible teaching style and don't learn best the way she wants you to, she will assume you don't care and are being lazy. Not sure why she assumes the worst of every student unless they suck up or get an A. Extremely disrespectful.
Just straight up tough
Dr. Novack's lecture is so inspiring and clear. If you read the textbook beforehand and attend her lectures, you will understand the logic. I have to admit that her tests are hard. But as long as you do the problems she assigned and attend recitations, you will do well. Chemistry is inherently hard, Dr. Novack made it so much simpler
Prof Novack is a nice person, but her class really killed me. It developed a serious reputation for being absolutely awful. Just staying afloat in her class took up ALL of my free time. There were days when I'd spend 5 hours in her Zoom sessions, not even including time spent on homework. Ugh.
If you're a math person, not a visual learner, and have a high tolerance for hundreds of slides with chintzy animations, you're probably one of the people who leaves Novack good reviews. Otherwise, get ready for an unnecessarily difficult course, uncalled for favoritism and sass, and virtually impossible tests based around a monotonous textbook.
Dr. Novack majored in music and then realized it wasn't a lucrative career, so she used her failed experience as a pre-vet student to vicariously live off of the happiness of the favorite students she turns into SI leaders, and use the rest of the class to feel better about her failure by deliberately destroying their mental health and self esteem.
Dr. Novack is a wonderful professor who has her students best interests in mind. She is extremely knowledgeable about Chemistry and clarifies material that is initially elusive. Dr. Novack understands how to communicate effectively with students and inspires them to be dedicated to the class.
Melissa needs to stop leaving reviews like the one below to hide the fact that Novack is an awful professor with no empathy and horrific personality issues. The course has rampant favoritism, but could actually be manageable if only the professor actually cared about the success of students that weren't future SI leaders.
Has openly admitted to students that she gets drunk before grading tests and reading course evaluations. If "Dr." Novack put as much effort into drinking alcohol and playing favorites as she did into making sure more than a few AP chem alumni did well in her class, Brandeis would be a far better place and the country would have far more scientists.
Just know that if you didn't take AP chem in high school or don't have a good grasp of chemistry coming in, you're about to struggle. Overall, I didn't find her to be mean, I just thought the way she taught was catered to one type of student and if you weren't that, she came off as very intimidating.
Attitude problems
Dr. Novack is a challenging professor, and it was definitely a wake-up call when I got to college. That said, the study strategies I developed last year really made me prepared for future courses that were all so much easier as a result of starting off with the challenging ones. Attend SI and recitation for most success.
Novack may be a good lecturer, but she is the most unapproachable and pessimistic professor I've ever had. She blamed students for getting covid or close-contacted during a surge of cases on campus and did the bare minimum to accommodate students. Overall does not seem to care about students' mental health.
Most traumatizing class I have ever taken. I was experienced in chem (from Highschool) and when coming to that class I felt so out of place and stupid. Great lecturer but terrible teacher. Expected us to be experts in things we just learned. Just all around terrible.
Her tests come directly from HelI.... like .. I'm trying to girlboss on this B-word but it ain't working you hear.
It is absolutely the toughest glass I had freshman year. It is super important to get to know her in office hours early so that when you do struggle she knows you and where you are at to then be able to have her help you. She needs to know early on that you care and work hard as is alluded to by many of the previous reviews.
Prof. Novack is no-nonsense, but if you respect her and the class, she'll respect you. She does a good job of making difficult content accessible and easy to understand. Genchem is a hard class, but if you put in the effort, take notes, and actually do the practice problems, you'll do well. Super generous grade ranges.
Dr. Novack gets a bad rap, but it't not all true. Gen. Chem is an insanely hard class, so be prepared to spend a lot of time studying, but if you work hard, you can do well. It's obvious Dr. Novack cares about her students and wants them to do well. There are a ton of opportunities to improve your grade. Going to SI and recitation really helps.
Novack's Class is really tough and her tests do not reflect what is taught in class. Always do the redemption challenges after the tests and take the final :) People say the honors gen chem class is easier than Chem 11 so take that into consideration when choosing classes
Literally 90% of the positive reviews on here are written by the same handful of people who obsess over her because she gives them validation. From an educational perspective, she is a mediocre educator at best who knows her stuff but is very inflexible and bad at simplifying. From a human perspective, she is cruel and judgemental.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. Novack wants us to learn so much in so little time and the exams are extremely hard. She does not care how much you try, is super judgemental, and makes you feel stupid by not getting what she's saying. This class is supposed to teach basic chemistry, however, she expects that you have knowledge beforehand
Dr. Novack has a PhD in slavic studies, not chemistry. She was able to teach the information, but it was sometimes in a convoluted manner. Her tests were incredibly difficult even accounting for her generous grade scale. The only grades you would get are from checkpoints & exams, which were few. If you read everything and study, you might do okay.
Dr. Novack is a really good lecturer and teaches the material well. Content can get pretty challenging and the tests (85%) are definitely stressful and hard. Group work tends to be fine but is only worth 15%. Extra credit opportunities help a lot. She is pretty intimidating and I definitely spent many many hours doing textbook problems + studying.
She's a nice person, but a TERRIBLE teacher. She gives information but no explanation, so the information is useless. She moves way too fast and expects you to know information you can't possibly know yet. Even with 6+ hours of studying a day, I still don't know if I can pass the class. For an intro chem class, this is in now way introductory.
I rated her 1 star not because I'm a lazy student who party 24/7 but I'm actually a try hard, and I don't deserve a grade that is made because of her careless clarification on the RPC grading requirement which waste my 8 hours of hard work and no sympathy toward students. don't take her class. I'm a try hard and I highly don't recommend you to try.
Moves very quickly through material, doesn't take questions, always holds class past time
By God, if losing a kidney meant that she would stop teaching this class I would perform surgery on myself with a paper clip and dig out both of my kidneys. Her grading is pedantic and objectively just terrible, just like her. She's so stunningly condescending and she'll spend the entire time blaming her lack of teaching ability on her students.
Always says "disappointed" to students after a test, and never thinks of her own teaching style. If u wanna take the course, ready to sacrifice all ur time into chem, not kidding.
I'm literally failing rn, and yea it's my fault for not studying enough. But she keeps saying it's ENTIRELY our fault. I know people who are working so hard and still not doing well. By the numbers, she should realize her teaching methods are not working. Those who succeed already mastered chem in high school. To pass, study up and START EARLY.
Like the other reviews said, the only people who succeed are the ones who already mastered chem in high school. No joke. Sure, it's not as if every student is blameless if they perform poorly, but given the amount of students that regularly struggle to pass the course it shouldn't matter, because she should be reevaluating her flawed teaching style
fw laoshi, very sb. never take it.
Decent lecturer, horrible person. Would honestly recommend brushing up on chem or taking it over the summer (Brandeis is very strict on counting outside chem classes for credit). Go to SI because you actually learn there!
Dr. Novack gets a bad rap. This is understandable as she can seem intimidating at first, and the course material is difficult, especially since this is many students first course in college. However, she's actually a fantastic lecturer. Streamlines complex material and gives fair tests. She also cares so much, evident in office hours and recitation
Dr. Novack was not a bad lecturer. I will give her credit for that. I will say though, she is a terrible human being. If you don't love chemistry, you will hate her and she will hate you. Do not go to office hours and do not let her learn your name. She will destroy you in office hours and scrutinize you. AP chem isn't neededto pass btw just grind.
Good lecture, tough grading. SI isn't that useful if u don't know anything, since some of the TAs teach pretty slow, but problem sets help a lot since she always come up with exam questions from there. My only advice is to read ahead, otherwise you will be screwed. For checkpoint don't try to rely on your teammates cuz most of the time their trash.
Dr. Novack is the best professor I've had the privilege of learning from. I came into the class with 0 chemistry knowledge, but through utilizing the SIs, office hours, & recitations, I was able to be successful. Dr. Novack's passion & love for her students is contagious, & while the class was challenging, its made me into the student I am today.
People who leave bad reviews are not putting in the effort required by chem 11. Dr. Novack provides countless resources and opportunities for you to be successful in the class. Yes, the class is hard, but if you put in the work you will do more than fine. Go to recitation. Do the RPCS. Go to SIs. Go to lecture. SHOW UP!
Dr. Novack is an excellent professor. People don't like her bc they aren't performing well in the class, but Dr. Novack provides every resource needed for success and those who don't utilize them do poorly. This class requires more work than most intro level courses, but is that hard work that sets you up for the rest of your college career.
Dr. Novack's class is phenomenal. I learned so much and she's inspired me to continue with chemistry at Brandeis. She is the best and cares for her students in ways I haven't seen from many other professors.
Dr. Novack is a phenomenal lecturer, professor, and person. Checkpoints/tests are hard, but always within reason.
so mean...........
Only went to a few lectures in person, but Dr. Nocack is nice and know
Excellent class, learned a lot
Wish the SI leader who is writing the good reviews really change up their wording because its PAINFULLY obvious the same person is writing the reviews...really smart. If you take it during the fall/spring, don't do as you hoped, and it makes you feel bad, dont let this get to you, it gets WAY better from here! Don't let her make you hate chemistry
Worst class, has a rep for 1 of the worst teachers. This course was unnecessarily hard, & grading was harsh. The SI sessions were not helpful and sometimes, the information taught was wrong. AP chem or not, you're in for a ride. Luckily I was able to teach myself the information to pass but it cut into lots of my studying time for other classes. GL
Tainting the school & teaching community. Doesn't even have a chemistry degree/background experience. "My background is in the humanities--my PhD is in Slavic linguistics from Brown--but I would say that teaching is teaching." No, do not simplify teaching, effective teaching is complex and takes lots of skill that she clearly does not have.
She's pretty good at explaining Chemistry but she is pretty mean. I did ok in the class and was still met with her coldness and guilt-tripping. Studying infringed on all of my time outside class despite having done well on the AP Chemistry test. The one time I went to her office hours, I was spooked away for the rest of the year.
Her lectures aren't useful most time is spent reviewing outside of class. SAVE URSELF DONT TAKE ITTT
come on guys. Her class is not that insane and after orgo you will realize that she is really generous. She gives up to 10 extra credit as redemption point. So if you get over 77 for each test and make good effort you will get an A. That is definitely not tough.
This class is not bad she's a solid lecturer and grades so generous… ppl don't wanna put the effort in
One of the best professors at Brandeis. Truly gives you opportunity needed for success in chem 11 and beyond.
Prepare to self-study if you don't have any chemistry base. No mercy for ppl who haven't learn chemistry in high school. Goes over material super fast and the test is super hard and tricky!
She is so mean! Don't go to her OH. I asked her question once and I feel like she is bullying me!!!
Prepare to eat, sleep, and breathe chemistry if you take this class. Lectures move very quickly without any chance to jot down important notes on her densely packed slides. This course requires you to spend all free time attending recitation or SI sessions. Unfortunately, I won't be continuing on with chemistry at Brandeis for these reasons.
If you want a life, don't take this class.
Dr. Novack is an amazing professor. Her class is hard, but if you put in the work it is more than possible to succeed. The class is test-heavy, but her teaching style is organized and well thought out.
It is a tough class but it is very doable. There are many opportunities for extra credit, a dropped exam (including the final), and a lot of practice. Most of her tests are extremely similar to the pretests, which makes it fair and easy to study. Her lectures are okay but the recitations helped significantly more. We'll miss you Professor Novack!
Glad we managed to outlast her lol
Dr. Novack's lectures are purely based on the textbook readings; I learned very little from her as I only focused on the textbook. Her practice problems in class can be helpful at times but a majority of the time it only furthered my confusion. Thus, I stuck to the homework textbook problems instead.
Most who rate Dr. Novack poorly did not take time and effort to commit themselves to coursework. Those who badmouth her lecturing simply don't keep up with material. Class is well-organized, lectures are fluid, and tests are fair and all-encompassing. Given copious additional resources to help you succeed. Very personable if you get to know her.
I'm just laughing at the fact that she was forced to resign and yet she's still on here posting good reviews of herself pretending to be a student. Only Novack and her SI leaders would blame students for her bad attitude. I did fine in the class but that didn't change the fact that she was always condescending for no reason.
novack is overhated; free my boy
