Clay was great! Very helpful... He never gave useless work and didn't mark things too heavily. If you wanted help he was there. And he was REALLY good about e-mail. He'd answer questions quickly and effectively by e-mail. Definately a great teacher.

Great teacher, made you think about topics, not just boring grammer garbage. One of my favorite teachers by far:)

Clay is full of enthusiasm for not only language and teaching, but offering his students the opportunity to expand their minds via critical analysis and thinking. Who cares what he looks like--the guy is a wizard for quotes and material. Awesome prof!!

TO me he is so easy !! I ended up with a B plus from him by not reading the thick-2000 pages textbook. Of course I did it in my 4th year so might be very easy. A tip for all, go search the analysis of stories online, don't read the book.

Clay is an awesome teacher. He's not too difficult and he's a big help when it comes to assignments. His classes are fun and interesting. Besides the fact that he is incredibly hot, I would definitely take another class with him just for fun.

I took his class two semesters in a row, because he is so amazing. Not only is he a great teacher, but he is extremely good looking! He is also very reasonable and his class is an easy A.

Clay was a solid prof. very approachable in regards to help with essays. He wants very much for his students to succeed and is willing to go the distance to see that that happens.

Don't kid yourself, this guy is HARSH. Forget what you think you see, Clay is very serious about teaching and research. I got rocked in this class. But I also got a lot of help and direct feedback on how to not look like an idiot in my writing.

Reasonable workload, Nice guy, not stuck up or hot, just normal. Hard marker,definetely not an eezy A!We spent 2 classes watching "Hotel Rwanda", I think we could have used that time more constructively.

Awesome proff. I got alot out of this course. Plus he is gorgeous to look at, which makes attendance easy.

Clay let me know that the garbage i got As for in high school wouldn't go over in college...a valuable lesson that has served me well. His encouragement is part of the reason i've chosen English as a major. If you just his classes cause Clay wants you to think and work for your grades.

Great professor, awesome class. He goes out of his way to help students succeed. I like his direct style of teaching and how he tailors the assignments to be practical for real life. And he won't waste time asking us to learn MLA! Highly recommend Clay for all years.

Enjoyed his class: it was laid-back and sometimes focus drifted. But he made whatever we discussed interesting.

Clay is an amazing prof. He truly cares about each individual student. I learned a lot. As long as you pay attention, really easy class.

Dr. Armstrong is a no BS professor. He's tough, but fair minded. If you need help, he's available. If you hope to slide by without exerting any effort, don't even bother enrolling. I found his teaching to be interesting and thought provoking. Highly recommended, if you're serious and willing to put in the time.

Fair grader and good, smart prof. Don't think he's harsh, if you put in due effort, he rewards you for it. he will help you constantly even if it means much more work for him. serious but funny and relaxed as well. i've gotten more out of his classes than most other profs' classes. recommend this guy if you're willing to work for your grades

Clay is an amazing professor. I took his class in the condensed 7 week summer course. The first class he came across as quite intimidating, but he is actually really nice. He will do anything he can to help you. I found him extremely hot which was a plus. He is very fair and respects you if you put in the effort. Awesome guy! Hope to have him again

Amongst the best teachers this mediocre institution will ever have, terrible handwriting but makes up for it with clarity (spoken) and by going out of his way to help students. Recommend him.

Clay was the best prof I have ever had! Extremely enthusiastic, and prepares you very well for the tests. He is very straight-forward and very easily approachable, great person to have a conversation with. You will get a good mark if you attend class, show enthusiasm and actually LISTEN to him. He knows his stuff and tells you exactly how it is.

Amazing professor. However, do not be late and make sure you are truly ready to learn. Class is always clear and to point, minutes are never wasted...with that said make sure you are not wasting his time or students. I do agree it is rude to the teacher and class. Wish he was my instructor again!

Great prof, definitely not the easiest grade you'll ever get but if you are willing to work hard and learn you will get a good grade. I was completely uninterested in this class prior to taking it but about mid way through it was my favourite class. Class discussions were always interesting. Would take another one of Clay's classes for sure. :-)

Easy class if you attend and listen, makes it really clear what you need to know and gives you all questions before the test. Good for a first year english class

Clay is wonderful. He is passionate and engaged. He is the only professor who had taken the time to teach us how to write! Most other profs go on about the material then get in a knot about the lack of writing skills in the class papers. I've wondered where they expect us to learn HOW to dissect meaning from a text and WHAT to write? From Prf Clay.

Interesting that the negative reviews are from students who can barely compose a coherent sentence. My take, do the readings, go to class, and ask for help if you need it. He's not an easy grader and he's dead serious about literature, but he's also fair and will bend over backwards to help you. Definitely not a course for the lazy.

Clay is an engaged, caring professor with high expectations from his students. He will challenge you in your work, but his willingness to help is equal to his standards. He wants his students to take as much as they can from the material covered in the lectures, and will eagerly guide those who want to research further. Highly recommended prof.

Attend class!! 10% of your grade is made up of this, goes along way when looking for that next letter grade up. Awesome prof, provides really awesome detail and a bit of freedom with essay writing. Also provided my class with our midterm 3 days before because he wants you to succeed.

Clay is amazing! He has definitely been one of my favourite profs. He is very smart, Expects you to work hard, loves when people participate.. Took an 830 am class just to be able to take another class with him because I thought he was wonderful. Hard marker that's for sure, but worth it from the amount you learn!

Clay's a great prof who knows his stuff. He knows a lot about the gangster film genre and appreciates students who are actually interested in the course. He is straight forward with what he expects and makes every class enjoyable. Only thing is that he doesn't like email so if you need help you better ask him before or after class.

Pretty decent class. I find he gives fair marks and provides in-depth analysis for the reading assignments (although he can get a bit boring). Cannot for the life of me read his hand writing on graded assignments though so getting feedback in-person is essential. He also seems to favour people who show interest and regularly attend classes.

My favourite professor by far! Lectures can get a little boring sometimes but theyre very easy to pay attention to. All the reading he gave us is very relevant to student life and provides different perspectives on life. He really understands what it is like to be a student and doesnt give a lot of homework. 10/10 would definitely recommend

I really enjoyed Clay. I actually found myself very engaged in his class even though it was a typically boring course. He's clear with what he wants in assignments, don't put in the work and you won't get a good mark.

It's a reading intensive course, and you'd better plan on attending class. He's funny as heck but serious about the subject, and expects the same from students. Show up, do the reading, and you'll do fine. If you need help, he's very available after class and willing to help. Thought I'd be bored, but he made it interesting. Would take again.

Clay is a great lecturer, and nothing will come as a surprise. He makes his schedule, and what is expected of us known. No deadlines come out of nowhere, no pop quizzes, and he does offer extra credit. You will have to read a lot, and he expects you to know the material inside and out. Only accepts print outs of assignments.

Clay is a one of a kind! You must be prepared to work hard in his class but it is all worth it. He puts less pressure on students by giving plenty of time to complete assignments. The readings he assigns are quite enjoyable and you actually learn fascinating information. If you are a dedicated student then Clay will definitely suit you!

Clay is an outstanding professor. He gives back what you put in so show up to class and put in effort and he will provide you with the same respect. He is VERY reasonable with extensions and will tell you exactly what he expects on assignments. Although his lectures are fairly dry, he provides an incredible foundation for writing research papers.

Clay is by far one of the profs I learned the most from at VIU. His deadpan humour can make him seem a bit intimidating, but don't take it personally. He treats students like adults and expects them to put in the effort. Be willing to go out on a limb and share your ideas in his class and you'll learn a lot.

I really enjoyed Clay's teaching style as well as the content of the course. The way that he talked made me worried that the class would be very difficult, but just make sure to pay close attention and take in-depth notes.

Clay is an awesome prof! I did Engl 125 online and he did an amazing job at letting students know he wants to support us and see us succeed. You will do well in his class if you take lots of notes and do all the readings. He is a fair marker and always willing to work with students who are struggling.

Clays a great prof and I liked him a lot! The only thing I will say is he definitely could have been a bit more clear on what we were supposed to be reading/analyzing each week, but that also could have been an incompetence error on me lol.

I LOVE HIM. He's an awesome down to earth prof man, he's accommodating, funny as heck, and he makes boring concepts interesting, and I like how passionate he is about the things he teaches - it makes me want to learn more. Out of all the engl profs I've had he's not top 2 and not 2!! Take his courses. I wish he taught more upper level English!
