confusing at times but willing to work with you more than fair
Can be a bit confusing, but always willing to help you understand!!
He was very helpful but sometimes unclear on the material. Made the tests more difficult then should have been. He made trick questions and most of the class who should have had A's didn't.
Explains well, moves pretty fast. Always willing to have a quick talk before or after class. Gives out grade summaries at various points during the course, which is REALLY useful (so you can see how well you are doing.) Would recommend.
He helped a lot. The summaries of grades throughout the semester did help me see my progress. Gives hints for test taking and even writes the department final so if you learn his tactics in class you will do much better on the final.
Very good teacher. Very friendly and helpful. The only thing that bugs me is when he explains the material, and you understand, he keep on going on things that are really unneccesary. He elaborates TOO much. He is done with the material about 20 minutes early, but he never lets you go he says "And again.." and talks more which makes you want to leave
pretty good
Not a difficult class. Does a good job of explaining the material and provides study guides that reflect almost perfectly the types of questions that are on the exams. He did explain things for a long time up till the end of class, which got annoying, but I guess some people needed that. Book is ABYSMAL! DO NOT bother buying it. You won't use it.
Excellent mathmatician, horrible professor. He just barrels through examples during class, and at times will ask questions, but before the class can answer, he just goes on. Has a bad habit of trying to cram too much material into one class, which confuses much of the class.
With him you don't even need to spend money to buy the book! Everything you need is given in the class notes and they are actually even more detail than the books! He's a great teacher! Pick him as your professor!
This is my second class with Hicks. He is a little dry but very clear and straight-forward. He lectures based off of notes, which he makes available for the students. I would highly recommend Hicks to anyone.
I am so bored in his class that i feel like sleeping
Very clear professor and willing to help you out. Very lenient on turning in quizzes and will do a lot to help you know where you are in the class and what you can do to improve. Sometimes he can get boring and say the same thing over and over again, but it helps at the same time. His notes are great and give you all you need to know.
Uses worksheets during class which are very helpful in retaining the material & for following the steps when doing homework or reviews. Makes time for students who need help. Great Prof!
He's a nice guy and all but he wasn't really there when you needed to talk. never explained things so you had to go and find your own examples. I don't reccomend him.
Very, very boring! He is a good mathematician, but his teaching skills not that great! He provides lecture notes that are very helpful!
Curves exams, takes best grades of HW and quizzes. Explains everything to death. Really he is a good professor, I catch on quick so I was just bored by his explanations over simple tasks.
Hey was a very good professor and his explanations on topics were crystal clear! Always gave you updates on grades after every test. Also, he would always be available for helping you on assignments if he couldn't in person he would help you over the phone! Overall was an enjoyable class. I recommend him if you have to take STAT 301.
Excellent teacher! Makes everything crystal clear and is always there if you need help. The tests were decent and ended up curving the class. I would definitely recommend him!
Explains everything very well. But boring class! Has pretty easy quizzes and exams are sorta difficult but are curved. If you go to class and take notes you should be fine.
Very good professor! Really knows his stuff and is very helpful. His notes are excellent and the book is not needed. Test are kind of difficult, but if you study hard you should be fine!
Clay Hicks is AWESOME!!! He posts notes for each chapter and goes over those notes specifically during class. He's super clear on everything!!! I would definitely recommend him to anyone. Great teacher!
Clay Hicks is the best Math professor ever. I had both 110 and 118 with him. he is a very nice guy and explain everything very well. he chooses the best grade you have. Dont take this class with anybody else other than Clay.
VERY BORING! I was very good at math, or so I thought, before taking this class. He puts notes up online that you print off and bring to class but does NOT explain what he does. He flies through problems. Not very good at explaining what is going on either. Look at another M118 prof. I ended up having someone else with a different prof teach me
Hicks is awesome. He clearly goes through everything you need to know during lectures. Hicks takes all questions that you may have and answers them. He takes the 4/5 best test scores. Grading is super easy. Definitely encourage taking this professor, love the way he grades and teaches!
Talks a lot!! Will always go until the last minute of class. Very boring. Does not use oncourse. Does not reply to emails.
Hicks is a great instructor at helping his students pass the class. He takes your best scores out of the required tests. He can be confusing at times and skips certain problems. Even the book is not real clear on certain problems. He is willing to help though!
Class was a little challenging due to the material. I spent bunch of hours in the MAC for help. But prof does take highest grades, walks through the notes, and is very approachable. Book was unnecessary/never even touched it. Those who say class is boring, bear in mind that it's a math class. Also, taking a stats class b4 this was a huge help.
Not a fan of him. He was very dry and doesn't allow for the class to work through problems while he teaches. No rapport with the class at all. I saw him during office hours and he didn't recognize me at all. I went to all but 1 lecture. The MAC is your best bet.
Very good math teacher. You do not need the book at all. He posts notes that you print out and use in class to work along with him. He is very fair in grading. Only uses top scores on homework and tests and throws the rest out. Helped me outside of class multiple times. Just visit his office before class.
If you go to class there's no way you can fail this course. Prof. Hicks is slow but really clear. I only went to half the classes and so used my textbook a little, otherwise it would have been totally unnecessary.
He moves a bit slowly through the material but explains things clearly so I didn't mind very much. I recommend taking this class over the summer if you have the option due to this. He gives a few extra points for the tests and there were also extra credit homework assignments. I ended the class with a grade of 108. I also never used the book.
Good teacher. Explains all assignments and their due dates. You complete all homework and quizes outside of class so you should get %100 on those. Easy to understand and explains finite well to those who don't do well in math. Would take his class again.
He will take forever and a day to walk students through the notes. I'm not talking about difficult and time consuming concepts of which require such pacing. He'll take something that can be explained inside of 30 seconds and turn it into ten minutes. It is absolute torture sitting through one of his lectures. I do not recommend this guy.
This was my second time taking M118 (I took it previously at another university before transferring). Clay is a great math teacher! He explains things in a way that make sense, he is always willing to answer questions and offer extra help outside of class. All homework is done online, and we have about one take home quiz per week, easy points.
His class is everything you need to know laid out for you. He teaches very well. He tends to do many practice problems and describe how to do them in depth every single time, a bit droning, but this is great if you have trouble in math. He reviews from the day before the first 30 minutes which is great. Also drops a lot of bad grades for you.
I strongly suggest Clay Hicks for finite! (I hate math and got an A) He makes this class super easy to understand. Homework and take home quizzes are easy points. He also offers extra credit for each chapter. Just attend class and take some time to review before the exams and you will do fine! Also, don't rent or buy book. You will not need it.
Great teacher. Do your homework, pass the tests and you'll be great. He offers extra credit at the end that could potentially boost you up about a letter grade! Take advantage :)
Great professor, does an excellent job of making subject matter clear to all students
The class itself is not very difficult, but his lectures can be extremely dry. There is generally a "take home" quiz at least once a week and an assignment per section of the chapter. Tests are not difficult, but definitely show up for review days.
Professor Hicks was a good professor but was overall average. As a person who hates math his long lectures do anything but keep me focused. Dry material. You will do a take home quiz each week. One bright note was that he gave a few extra credit assignments so even I, who sucks at math, received an A. Nice guy - average professor.
Finite is the easiest math course you will ever take. Professor Hicks is a nice dude but he calculates problems too slowly and half the time you'll be sitting in class 45 minutes before it's over with nothing to do but zone out to him writing out problems on the screen. Just do all the homework and quizzes. Take advantage of all the extra credit!
If you're bad at math, I recommend taking this course with Hicks. His lectures are super boring and it's hard to pay attention in, but before every exam, he offers practice exams and you can get up to 5 extra credit points. I did poorly on every exam, but with all the extra credit he offered, I kept a decent grade.
Hicks is a great teacher! Everything about his class is awesome even if you aren't good at math! He explains everything perfectly! I recommend that you take him
Clay is a good professor. Time to time it doesn't make sense about what he is teaching but overall, he is a good teacher. He cares about your work and will help you when you need it. I would recommend his class to anyone! He is also an easy grader!!
During the lectures, he has the voice of an angel because he will put you to sleep. The lectures are dry and his voice is monotone. However, he will thoroughly explain the material and try to help you as much as he can.
I took this course in the summer so it was accelerated however he planned and laid out the material so that it was never too much. He always made sure we understood a topic before moving on to the next. He's super lenient with work and dropped a few assignments at the end of the session too
Clay Hicks is a great teacher! He explains the material very well and moves at a slow enough pace so that it is comprehendible. He drops your lowest exam score. He gives you practice tests before the exam and makes them worth up to 3 bonus points. Definitely recommend taking a class with him!
Hicks is a wonderful professor! A little monotone, but it is probably just the subject. Very understanding and is willing to walk you through problems you don't understand. Accepts late work and has take home quizzes- what more could you want?
Great math professor. He goes nice and slow and explains everything very thoroughly. His voice is very mono-tone and makes you want to sleep but overall he's notes and teaching is very easy to follow, especially if you struggle with math!
This class is so hard to pay attention to because he is so boring but I mean I explains everything in detail so theres that. But I mean one if the most boring professors I have ever had. It is so difficult to actually learn in the class being paying attention to him is one of the hardest thing you will have to do.
Super great prof. He is definitely mono-tone which can make it hard to stay focused. There were 13 take home quizzes which he drops 2 or 3. He also drops 3 homework assignments and 1 test. He gives extra credit each lesson as well. Its nearly impossible to not do good. He is very slow while explaining stuff, so if you need extra help he's the one!
Overall, a good professor. Attendance is not mandatory, but recommended. The MAC was very helpful throughout this course. He is very monotone and lecture heavy, but he knows what he is talking about. You get take home quizzes that are easy A's and he has note packets that you follow along in and practice examples.
He has a boring lecture and is a little monotone. First 3 chapters were EXTREMELY difficult. The last few aren't as bad. I recommend getting a tutor even if you are struggling the slightest bit... The class is curved a LOT through, so that is a bonus. I am good at Trig and Calc and I have just found this class to be very difficult.
This professor was good, however I felt sometimes that he over-explained some topics. His notes are great and easy to fill out. Tests and quizzes aren't super difficult but aren't too easy. Overall good professor.
This class was super easy. He gives guided notes for lectures and makes material super easy to understand.
Really laid-backed professor. He wouldn't say anything when I would wear an earbud when he was teaching. Not sure if it's because he knew I was doing well in his class or because he just didn't care. The homework can pile up on you fast if you start slacking.
The most boring professor Ive ever had. His lectures are so difficult to sit theough and hard to fallow along with. He over explains even the most simple topics. The work load is fairly light and you have plenty of time to complete assignments.
Clay is a great professor! He can get carried away with explaining things so it's best that if you understand what he is saying the first time, just tune yourself out until he moves onto the next topic. There is a lot of material in 13600 so be ready for many quizzes and homework but if you study, do all assignments and go to class you will be fine
Hes a chill guy. Just do the mylabs and quizzes and youll pass. Doesnt take attendance for a grade.
By far the most boring professor I've ever had. He would drone on for the entire lecture and over explain every single topic. The class was made so much harder because his voice will put you to sleep. Wouldn't recommend if you struggle with math.
The most monotone and boring professor. Oftentimes, he would keep us until after class was supposed to get out. He is very good teaching wise, but it is extremely hard to pay attention when listening to someone who talks in slow motion.
I took his class over the summer and I have to say it wasnt as bad as I thought it would be. Definitely do all the My Math Lab quizzes and homework and youll do fine. I printed of the notes he provided and I fill them in as he went. I used the MAC center too and I passed with an A!
I loved Mr. Hicks as a professor. He knew the information extremely well which ultimately let to his downfall. He would often over explain topics which would end up confusing me. You get a HW assignment and then a quiz for every lesson, you get unlimited tries on HW and 4 attempts on quizzes. You also get written quizzes occasionally.
I got COVID-19 this semester, and this prof. wouldn't re-open any assignments or tests I missed while in the hospital. Also wouldn't answer my emails when asking for help. Wouldn't recommend.
TBH im pretty good at math so I personally thought finite was super easy. I attended 2 zoom lectures a week for this class and he was always super clear and explained everything super SUPER thoroughly. If you struggle with math I think its good that he goes so slow but if you are more advanced you may get a bit bored. Overall, I would recommend!
Professor Hicks' whole class was ran off of guided notes. Super easy easy and he was amazing at simplifying finite problems to make them more understandable. Homework and quizzes on MathXL can be slightly heavy but nothing too bad. 100% would suggest and will be taking him for other courses!
Took his finite class, he is a great guy and very genuine. He goes slow so it is easy to understand his lectures. Can be monotone, but it is the topic not him. I recommend chewing gum and following along with notes. Great guy, great teacher. Easy class if you put in the effort.
Does not answer emails or phone calls. Goes way too fast in class. Do not allow a paper with formulas for problems on the test. Very difficult class!
Off the bat he talks VERY SLOWLY and takes forever to get through any problem. Hes also not very good at answering questions about the material and tends to confuse you more than answer it correctly. Altogether hes just very bad at explains new concepts and is more likely to confuse you more rather than help you.
I skipped all the classes after the first three weeks or so, and still knew what was going on. I did have to retake this class so I already knew what was going on. However, when I did go to class, he was super boring, so I just worked on other things and just copied down all the notes to look at later. Not exactly that much homework, but good amou
I took this class for the first time fall semester 2021 and I had to withdrawal. Its not that Professor Hicks is a bad professor, he is just very boring and when you ask questions sometimes he can make it more confusing than it needs to be. I feel like he expected everyone to understand the concepts without really explaining.
His lectures were very very very boring. Some concepts were very easy to learn but some problems he would over explain and make the problem confusing. He also assumes people know how to do steps, so he skips some. He talks very slowly and often runs out of time. sometimes his handwriting is ineligible. Overall the worst professor I've had yet.
Easy class. Literally just guided notes the whole lecture. MLM homework can be redone until 100%, canvas quizzes were kinda awful but you get three tries. Emailed him at like 10pm and immediately he got back to me.
Teaches really well
He does a great job organizing the class with the notes and is easy to follow along. He explains things in extreme detail so that it is easily understood, but if you understand it when he first explains it, it can get kind of boring when he explains it for another few minutes. There is also help in the MAC center that helped me.
He is a really good teacher, he explains things in extreme detail which is good for math classes. The lectures are super boring, but its because of the content not because of his teaching. There are tons of extra credit opportunities and practice problems. I would definitely recommend him as a professor because he explains things so well.
Professor Hicks is by far one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He breaks each concept down so we can understand it. You must go to class if you want to do well. Very lecture heavy but if you put in the work this class is an easy A+.
Professor Hicks is amazing! Classes are straightforward with notes and everything is outlined from day one of what you need to do to succeed. Online homework and quizzes are easy. He explains things clearly! Overall, this was an easier class, and I would recommend Professor Hicks!
He used guided notes for class, which for some could be beneficial , but I personally didn't like it very much. He tries to trick us with tests questions and I know he's just trying to make us pay close attention to detail but it was quite frustrating. He isn't engaging, he just talks in a monotone for the whole period and I lost focus often.
monotone lectures
not my teacher it is the way he makes the tests it's it doesnt add up to the homework at all and if you not really good at math this is gonna be a difficult course for you for me i just needed a D- to pass for my major I am close to maybe a C- because of the extra credits i have but without it i would of failed
Clay Hicks is the coordinator for M118. He is not understanding of circumstances that are completely out of the student's hands and he tends to punish students for issues that are the institution's complete fault. I would not recommend this professor as his inconsiderate decisions have led to drastic grade drops for the grades many.
