Very friendly and helpful
Extremely stress free class! Kind and caring man!
A very nice man, very good professor to have...and his class is easier than the other ENC1101 classes.
Fairly easy class, good man
Very nice guy. Kind of corny sometimes, but means well. He is very clear and is open to student comments and suggestions.
Awesome Class
I can't stress strongly enough how great Dr. Smith is as a person. I would take any class he taught. Cute as well!! A+
Amazing person.... He wil help you with everything you need. the computer class is awesome, it is so nice having a spell checker. BTW thank you very much for your help writing me the petition for paying as resident.
Dr. Smith is an excellent teacher and person. Cares about his students and their education. The class is easy if you do your work which isn't hard, and you will learn a lot.
awsome
He was ok. i know theres an easier enc 2210 prof out there. gets little to excited about it. very nice though. willing to help when asked. doesnt care about late work to a point. threatens to lock the door in the beginning of class but door has only been closed twice and he opened it for later ppl.
He is such a nice, easygoing guy. He doesn't require a lot, and lets you out early almost every class. He can be a bit corny sometimes, but it's funny. He prepared me well for the MCA. I would definitely recommend him.
very helpful in class and easy to get along with
mr. smith was awsome! the class was easy because he made the subject understandable. mr. smith is very approachable on many levels and he's just an all around great teacher.
The class was very informative and helpful. Dr. Smith is very easy to tal to if you are having trouble with assisgnments. I wish I could take him for another class!! Dr. Smith is beyond AWESOME!!!!
Really nice guy!
The best, hands down.
Smith was a ok teacher. He would like to get off topic way too much! If you have a hard time keeping attention then do not take his class. And he could be boring a repetivite a lot also.
This is a very cool dude. The easiest class on earth. Take him for tech communications.
Smith is a great teacher, very willing to help you out. Take his class. I had it on-line and I recommend that.
Good teacher, quizzes and assignments are online. Easy class but just a lot of assignments to keep up with.
He is AWESOME!! I thought the class was gonna be boring because of the topic, but he made it interesting. He tries so hard to help you pass his class. He is really nice and I would NOT hesitate to go to his office. I HIGHLY reccomend him to anyone who needs the third english at sfcc.
Great class, well organized, and grades assignments quickly! I would take this professor again.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!! Dr. Smith is the greatest. I took this class on-line and he communicates with his students very well. He's very polite and friendly. He'll also work with you if you have a problem. Just pay attention to the topic, and use the book when writing your papers-- you'll get an A.
Awsome teacher. Lots of work, but each assignment taught me something, and from the first week of the class I could tell me skills improving. The course isn't easy, but its definatly a nice break from all the ENC1101 and 1102 BS that bores you to death.
horrible teacher, not helpful, hard grader, hard assignments, do not take, he is an ****
My favorite Santa Fe teacher very fair and down to earth, makes you want to learn the stuff even though its boring
BEST TEACHER EVER!!! SO helpful and SO nice! I did the Eng Tech online, and its a LOT better than sitting threw a class. If you have to take it, do it online with him. Hes the BEST!
Take a different english course. This class is boring and monotonous. Although papers are graded in a timely fashion, the corrections are useless as this professor does not clearly explain what he does want to see.
Assignments are very unclear. Professor gives low grades. Makes final paper determine your success in the course. Do not take this professor if you are not an English major!
Awesome teacher. I absolutely loved having him even though I dreaded this class. I admit there were alot of papers due in such a short amount of time(Summer B). Gave us 40pts just because. Overall got a B in the course. His comments on papers are unclear but if you email him and ask he will clarify them for you. Quick responses and always helpful.
Dr. Smith is an AWESOME teacher! I took this class online and was able to communicate a lot with him throughout the semester. He was VERY helpful when anyone had a question, and he made the class fun. He is willing to look over drafts and make helpful comments on your work. I would definitely recommend taking Dr. Smith. Now I actually LIKE writing!
He is very helpful, knows exactly what he's doing, and gives very clear guidelines on how to do the assignments. He gives a lot of extra credit. You can Easily get an A if you do most of your assignments and the drafts. However, 1/3 of ur grade depends on your Final Report which is a direct application of everything learned throughout the semester.
Dr. Smith is a-w-e-s-o-m-e!
MR. CLAY IS THE BEST ENG. PROFESSOR I'VE HAD EVER! HE'S SO UNDERSTANDING- I FOUND OUT I WAS PREGNANT (AND HAD MORNING SICKNESS) AND HE LET ME FINISH THE CLASS ONLINE... SO I COULD SLEEP IN AND AVOID MORNING SICKNESS. I LOVE HIM FOR THAT. READING THE BOOK WAS MANDATORY, AS WELL AS TAKING QUIZES BUT IT WAS WORTH THE B+. YOU WILL ENJOY THIS CLASS.
Tough Grader! One tiny mistake could cost you! Nice guy but he's extremely anal. Don't take him online, take him in person.
Dr. Smith is a pretty cool guy. A little tough on the grading but Angel kept breaking down and he was really cool about it and either gave us extensions or would just give everybody a 100 if the problem wasn't fixable. I got an A in his class but I wouldn't recommend taking him online due to his grading.
Dont take him if u want to learn anything about tech.comm or if u want an easy grade-lots of pointless quizzes and the papers taught me NOTHING. I'm a great writer but he gave me a C bc of the formatting..but he's unclear about his specifications. The content of papers dont matter as much as format. overall a waste of time and money.
This was an online class and Angel really hindered us this semester. Dr. Smith was more than generous with extensions or just gave us an A. This is one of the 1st courses I have taken that we actually read the entire book. Very approachable professor and wish there were more like him.
He is a good teacher and knows a lot about tech comm but do not take him for honors! He gives so much unnecessary work. Weekly assignments take at least 8 hours and have to be perfect. Also have to read a chapter from the book and take a quiz before every class. Either take him not honors or find another prof.
He is the rudest professor you will ever have. He reads papers you spend hours on, says 75 things that are wrong with them, then gives you a D for improper formatting. Rude, arrogant, and unclear. I don't recommend at all.
omg, he's always talking about the "old days", telling us to go watch some dumb movies. He teached the class like we're at UF already. His instructions aren't clear and very complicated. You have to write your papers and summaries by his DUMB format which i've never recieved a decent grade for my papers, but before entering his class i was fine.
Greatest teacher ever; very lenient. Out of 1000 points by the end of the year he ended up handing us around 250. Have to write weekly assignments, but it is only two paragraphs, very worth it. Offers a ton of extra credit. Once you have 900 pts you have an A and can stop doing work. Best ENC1101 teacher, makes me not want to switch. RECOMMENDED!
Great class! We did writing assignments one a week and as long as u payed attention in class you were set, cause they were just summaries. He gave lots of extra credit for those who were willing to do a little extra work. THose who worked ahead and had As at the end of the semester did not have to write final paper. Over all best English teacher
Smith is the best teacher i have had so far in SFC. He gave a ton of extra credit at the end of the course. Just do your work and it will all pay off in the end.
Dr. Smith is an excellent english professor. He only assigned 1 writing assignment(2 paragraph's) each week. Overall, his quirkyness and good nature pay off because he assign's lots of extra credit, and is willing to work with students to make sure they receive the highest grade possible. Most students don't even have to write their final papers.
Papers are assigned every week, but they are short and fairly easy to write. It is entirely possible to get Bs and Cs on all you papers and pull off an A in the class. Although the class can get pretty redundant, there is TONS of extra credit and he is extremely helpful. Do your work and you'll easily get an A
This is truly a teacher who cares about his students. He will go to the ends of the earth to help his students out. His class is writing intensive. However, the writing assignments are not hard at all. He believes that quizes are to aid your learning so they will be open book.
Do.Not.Take.TechComm.Online. I cannot stress this enough. Do not take his tech communications class online. He rarely replies to emails. He piles on work at the last minutes. He is tough with grading. You have no clear idea what he wants in the writing assignments. I have no idea how he is like in a classroom setting, though.
I agree w/ the other ENC2210 student. We are in the online class together. Dr. Smith is horrible!!! I wouldn't take him again if he were the last Tech. Comm. professor on earth! Do not take him! When he grades your assignments (the ones he gave with crappy instructions) he litterally says your projects are "useless"!!! His exact words!
very organized and honest. willing to help you,you can learn alot from him!
Very nice teacher. just do the work and extra credit and you will pass over an A++, plus if you like cartoon network then he is your teacher
I had Dr Smith last semester, best teacher at SFC yet, he assigns weekly papers and gives you constructive criticism to improve your work. If you take his advice I promise you will learn something. He's a very lenient teacher and will go to any length to help his students. Awesome teacher!
If i could take him again, i would in a heart beat. He is easy going and understanding. I wrote my final paper about zombies and he was overjoyed about it. Defiantly recommend!!!!!
Hes HORRIBLE!!! His quizzes are a nightmare that serve no purpose in questioning what you've learned. His assignments are unclear and, while he has a good personality, is a horrible teacher.
he is a great professor
Mr.Smith was a very good professor. he made class interesting and is very gracous with grades. as long as you show that your trying, he will give you a good grade. He tries to make the class aware humanitarian issues and expand our minds. The only negaitve i would say is that he speaks off topic alot.
Dr. Smith is very helpful and shows a real interest in helping his students succeed. He is very graceful when it comes to grades and always offers assistance and his availability. Take his class and enjoy getting your required credits done!
Ok so he's a good guy. But he speaks A LOT off topic and sometimes very unclear on when in class essays are due. He does provide extra credit. If you're bad at english. Don't take him. He's very picky with his essays. I was never sure wat he wanted.
To put it simply, TAKE DR.SMITH. Very understanding, extremely helpful, lets you out early a lot. Tons of extra credit, and flexible due dates. He keeps class interesting and light. He'll go through most of assignments in class so you do benefit from going. I wish he taught 1102. Grammer quizzes/reading quizzes are online. No time limit
GREATEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD! TAKE HIM HE IS AMAZING! HE IS NOT JUST A TEACHER, BUT HE IS THE MOST NICESET SWEETEST MAN YOU WILL EVER MEET! HE OPENS YOUR EYES TO A WHOLE NEW WORLD OF LEARNING! TAKE HIM YOU WILL GET AN A++++ HE IS VERY STRAIGHT FORWARDS AND VERY EASY TO UNDERSTAND! HE HAS A LOT OF PATIENCE! TAKE HIM A LOT OF EXTRA CREDIT TOO! =D A+
I took this class online and it is really hard for all the writing assignments if it doesnt meet his requirements he gives u a zero till you redo it and thats with me follwing his guidelines and examples to a T. If you dont put the right headings or margins or filename ur grade will be lowered by a letter grade. I do not reccomend
Professor Smith puts a lot of time into preparing assignments, so he expects a lot out of them, especially the writing assignments. He has very high expectations and is very particular about the details, especially formatting, margins, use of headings, etc. If you follow his expectations to the letter, you will do very well.
Follow the instructions to the letter, turn in assignments, format everything as if your life depended on it, be careful with tricky questions in the quizzes and you will do fantastic. He is fair, very clear as to what he wants, and a funny guy. The only thing I don't like are the tricky questions. But not a deal breaker.
Dr. Clay Smith is a very intelligent professor who in my view, truly understands writing like the back of his hand. He's very understanding, explains things very cleary, and makes class fun! Wanting to help you succeed and become a great writer, Dr. Smith is very helpful and seems to really care about his students. Definitely my favorite teacher!!
My favorite Professor ever. He is so funny and easy to get along with. There is a lot of writing, but nothing to sweat over. He helps you out A LOT and let me turn in a few assignments late. Take him, seriously.
This class is hard, the instructions must be followed exactly. He is helpful and gives feedback, but with so many writing rules, it's EASY to fail on papers. Never miss an assignment and do the best you can on everything!!!
Clay Smith is easily one of Santa Fe's GREATEST professors. I earned an A on his online Tech Comm course during a really rough time. There's no doubt in my mind that this guy genuinely wants every individual student to succeed. He clearly lays out his expectations, provides excellent feedback, and seems to always be available for assistance.
He was was one of my favorite teachers! He's funny and real easy to get along with. He tries to make your experience enjoyable. Just be sure to follow all instructions on assignments. I didn't really use my textbook but some assignents require them. Hes actually pretty helpful, I ended the class with a B+ so yeah it wasn't a hard class.
Professor Smith is nice and all but he cannot explain directions for his life. He gives examples stating what he wants you to do, but then when you do that it is apparently wrong. He doesn't answer emails when you ask how you're supposed to do things. All in all, don't take him. Unless you want to be very very frustrated.
He is one of my favorite professors. He is really funny and we talked about Star Wars and whatnot a lot before class would start. He WILL help you out a lot with grading and will get you a second chance on mostly....EVERYTHING. I thought I got a D in this class and almost got an A. He explains the assignments and gives you examples and instructions
He walks you through the lessons and is helpful. If you don't want an assignment due every week then I don't suggest him. You do a lot of work but it's all pretty easy. You don't take any tests in this class, just a lot of writing.
very passionate about teaching. Simple papers due every week. Loves to use templates which are extremely helpfull! and overall makes his lessons extremely easy for students to pass the course. HIGHLY SUGGEST HIM
Dr. Smith is awesome! He asks for single paragraph assignments each week and gives templates for more involved assignments. He is very clear and helpful, if you ask! If you commit yourself to his class, you will earn a good grade!
Dr. Smith is an awesome professor. He is very helpful and replies to emails promptly. He is a very understanding professor. This text had the best section for citing references.
Dr. Smith is great. He is helpful in every way possible. There is a lot of writing involved in his GEB3213 class but he does his best help everyone. He's understanding and easy going. I highly recommend him.
i really enjoyed taking Mr. Smith's class! He is a very helpgul instrucuture and cares about the well being of his students! the class is an easy A.i definitely recommend this teacher.
Amazing teacher, friendly and helpful. Made me want to switch to an english major. I would completely take this class again! Instructions are clear, always answers emails during school hours. Great guy, very flexible on turn-in dates. You will get whatever grade you earn, but there are ample extra credit opportunities.
great guy. super nice. flexible with turn in dates. isn't one of those evil professors. what you do in class is for or part of your assignments. Take him. Its not a hard class as long as you attend the classes.
Assignments are mostly straight forward though at times there are a lot at once. Feedback on assignments can be a little harsh. The book for the class was only on one website, so there were no pricing options, and we didn't know about it until classes started.
Fairly fair teacher, really lax on due dates. Assignments were very convoluted and kind of pointless (in my opinion). Class consisted of 10 quizzes, and about as many writing assignments. Had a very odd final project that he gave me a bad grade on because he didn't like my layout. Had a 98 in the class before, will probably get a B+ now.
Tech Communication is required to get into UF, but do yourself a favor and don't take this guy. He takes the assignments way too seriously and grades crazy. Weekly quizzes at the beginning and writing assignments towards the end of the course. He thinks this is the only class his students have take. Yeah, right...
super awesome! very understanding and flexible with due dates. so much extra credit! DO IT! It raises your grade 5% points. I slacked off but my other classmates did exceptionally well. do the papers! its worth your time and he lets you redo them. great teacher! id do it over again. very funny!
Perhaps it was the online format of this class that did not work with the instructor's teaching style. All of the guidance that I received for assignments came from classmates. Assignments were changed frequently right before the due dates, and I had to do several assignments over, including the final research report.
Dr. Smith is by far the best professor that I've ever had in Santa Fe. I learnt a lot in this class.. His grading was very fair , he's very lenient when you explain to him the reason as to why you're submitting your work late, he outlines his syllabus on the calendar clearly and has lots of extra credit opportunities.Highly recommend him!
Dr. Smith is a very nice guy but this course is not. tech comm was very easy in the beginning, but towards the end you get hammered with papers. The papers have very strict guidelines making it very hard to get an A. I've received As on papers my whole life and in this course received all Bs.. Do not take if you are not good at writing.
He is a very nice guy, but the class is difficult due to his strict grading.
Dr. Smith is such a lovely teacher. That's all that needs to be said.
Although this class was fairly easy, it was very unorganized. Guidelines for assignments are unclear and the professor is not helpful with clarification. But if you are having a problem or need to revise an assignment he is always willing to help.
I have no idea what he is expecting. Utilizing tools like the writing lab and SMARThinking really don't seem to improve my grades. His comments after a graded assignment are vague and difficult to decipher what was done wrong and without that I'm not sure how to increase my grades by fixing those issues.
I really like Dr. Smith as a person but absolutely HATE him as a teacher. He is VERY VERY VERY unclear about his assignments and you will never fully understand what he wants you to write about. I was always a very strong writer but apparently not to him. If you're looking for an easy A., choose a different professor. He's also a very tough grader.
This guy is such a hard grading even if you do everything in a paper you will still have a such a poor grade, in SF you have many other professor to take the class with, so please do yourself a favor and don't take this class with him
Amazing professor, but more than a professor is an amazing person, recommended 100% he really will help you if you are interested in to, amazing profesor
Tends to change assignments at the last minute but extends the due dates. That is fine as long as you have not completed the work yet. He is very accommodating and flexible given the circumstances. The beginning of the class is lot of reading and quizzes to get through the text book but they get easier.
I've taken many classes that were difficult and many of the classes had not so great professors, but this is the first time I've ever been compelled to write a review. I made straight A's from K-12 and A's and B's throughout college; this was my first C in anything. This grade was not from lack of trying, but lack of guidance.
Do the work and you will pass. The content is not rocket science. Changes assignements after the fact which could be a problem if you work ahead and have already completed the orginial assignment. He is available if you ask for help and very reasonable.
Awesome teacher! Very clear on what you need to do and he's there to answer any questions you may have! Cool guy!
First half of the semester you had about 5 quizzes each week-easy. The second half he gave you 5 big papers win 3 weeks. I wish he would have assigned the papers throughout the course, corresponding to quizzes rather than all at once. If you ask for help he refers you to the textbook. I didnt learn anything from him. Would not recommend!!
Professor Smith is funny and tries to make lectures interesting. A lot of online chap. quizzes- pretty easy. 10 writing assignments throughout the semester and 3 major assignments. No final but a major 2 part assignment. Not hard to pass- go to class and do the work. Prof. Smith is really understanding and helpful if you just ask! Would take again!
I emailed him online multiple times asking why certain quizzes were worded incorrectly. He says he is an English professor and yet he doesn't even seem to speak English, horrible at feedback, never explains how to do assignments clearly. The worst professor I have ever had. YOU WILL NEVER USE ANYTHING YOU "LEARN," IN THIS CLASS IN YOUR LIFE.
Dr. Smith ROCKS!!! OMG like if I could take him for every class I totally would!! He is totally awesome in every way! He is willing to work with you to get the grade that you want. Do the work and you will get a high grade!! He is cool just to hangout with, and you wont want to take any other teacher! I'm taking him again in the fall. TAKE HIM!!
Dr. Smith is by far the best teacher I have had. He is willing to work with you and help you succeed, if you want to. There is a lot of work and you have to put in many hours but, if you're willing to do the work he is willing to help you succeed. Great Professor!!
Absolutely awful for online teaching. Gives vague, often times unactionable feedback and when pressed, refuses to respond to specific questions about feedback. Leans on "This is a bachelor-level class, figure it out" constantly. Avoid at all costs if you value a back and forth with your professor about an issue or feedback item you question!
Professor Smith is by far one of the best Professors at Santa Fe. I have never had a Professor like Dr. Smith who takes the time to analyze and provide the type of feedback needed on assignments to ensure a successful outcome. If you present your work to him for review prior to the due date, there is no way you will not receive a passing grade.
I do not recommend him for this class. There is a lot of writing assignments and he is NO help at all. If you spend time in the writing lab you might be able to pass. He offers a chance to send you a draft but he is not specific at all on what he wants you to fix.
Allows students the opportunity to turn in work multiple time for his review until the assignment is due. Gives feedback that makes you think critically about the writing and how to correct the paper. Holds the class to the standards of the program.
Clay Smith is by far the best Professor at Santa Fe. He is kind-hearted, caring, and wants to see his students succeed. This was my last course before graduation and Dr. Smith made sure to end my Santa Fe chapter on a high note. I have nothing but love, respect, and amazing things to say about this professor. He hopes for the best of his students!
would look for another professor
He is honestly the worst teacher at Santa Fe College. His assignments are very complicated and he is not clear at all. He is a tough grader and he does not help students to improve. I do not recommend him!
Awful experience. Do not take him
Great teacher! He is very helpful, especially when it comes to review your assignments. As long as you do your work and ask for feedback you will do good in the class. Dr. Smith gives amazing feedback and he is very specific, which help you a lot. I had a low C during the semester and I finished with a B due to his help and explanations. Take him
Professor Smith is one of the best teachers I've had at Santa Fe. He genuinely cares about his students and wants to help you succeed. The assignments are clearly laid out and if you ask, he will gladly review your work prior to the deadline and provide excellent feedback. He will help you become a better technical writer if you put in the work.
His class is very difficult, but he does offer several chances to get extra credit. Lots of writing assignments. He doesn't teach but rather states what is expected. He doesn't answer emails at all which was annoying. Feedback can be confusing but overall his class is okay. Take him if you have to.
He does NOT provide clear guidance on how to go about writing assignments and then uses a very elaborate and confusing scale to grade the papers. When you ask for feedback it is very vague and hard to follow. He also is not very timely in responding to emails or giving additional feedback when you ask for clarity. I highly recommend avoiding him.
I love this teacher. He's great at what he does, gives you many chances to submit drafts before it's due, provides feedback same or next day. Textbook is cheap. Best writing teacher I've had. If you get confused, simply make a meeting and he'll do his best to help.
Dr. Clay is an amazing professor. You will have a quiz every week, but nothing you cannot pass. He provides Super clear instructions and is always ready to help. Professor Clay provides great feedback and helps you understand what you need to do to improve. This class will help you in school and in your professional life. Certainly recommend this.
Best professor I've had to date! Very courteous, kind, compassionate, and caring. Willing to help you in any way possible if you communicate with him. Feedback comments were always positive and uplifting. Always provided his faith in my abilities and made me feel confident in my work. Would take him for every class if I could. He is exceptional!!!!
Professor Smith is my favorite professor. Its been my first semester at college, and he has super helpful and truly shown that he cares for his students. I ADVISE that IF YOU TAKE HIS CLASS, you show up. His class is much easier if you can here what he is teaching. Hes super approachable, and doesnt see the point in wasting 80$ on a book.
Does not help his students Stays off topic/wastes time in class thinks he's funny grades VERY hard at the end of the semester Can't talk in class, gets very upset quickly
Professor Smith is an excellent teacher, show up to class and pay attention and he practically writes the assignments for you. He is easy to approach and gives good feedback. Would definitely take him again if he is ever an option in future classes.
Amazing professor would definitely take him again if the chance comes up. His class is very straight forward he will literally do most of the assignments with you. The structure of each ICE is the same. He his a tough grader and will take major points off for anything incorrect but he's a wonderful professor and talking to him 1 on 1 is helpful.
The online class requires a lot of writing, but he will review everything. He will provide you with excellent feedback if you ask for it!
Dr. Smith is an excellent teacher. He will give you great feedback on your papers. Stay focused on your work and communicate. Not an easy class, but a great class and a professor I recommend.
Dr. Smith takes a rather ordinary topic like technical communication and brings it to life. Could not have asked for a better prof - he's funny, he's dedicated, and not only does he want you to pass his class, but he cares about what his students take away from the class. There aren't enough kind words in the English language to praise him enough!
if you can avoid him please do so. He does not provide clear feedbacks, overloads students with assignments and end up not being able to grade them assignments on time. Minimum waiting time for grades is 3 weeks meanwhile you have to write over 9 papers.
Worst professor I have had at Santa Fe. He is extremely inconsistent with his grading as well as his advice. Takes a long time to grade papers. I Did not learn anything in his class. To be honest he really made Professional Writing extremely confusing. He seems to think you can read his mind because its either his way or you are wrong.
If you did not take ENC2210 with him, then you will be confused. He teaches stuff that is not consistent with other 2210 classes. His feedback was useless, as each color could mean one of three things. I tried correcting my paper only to realize what I thought was wrong wasn't, because the colors were so confusing. Very nit picky teacher
The man can't admit when he is wrong, counted me off for errors it feels like he made up.
He thinks he is the best professor ever and that he is never wrong. DOES NOT LISTEN TO STUDENTS, even when you bring up valid points.
I wish SF would hire another professor to fill this class, because I learned nothing from him.
Extremely inconsistent grading. Instructions for online assignments make no sense. Gives feedback but categorizes mistakes instead of being specific. Do not take this class.
This mans is terrible at providing instructions on how to complete his assignments. He basically just tells you to analyze something without telling you what the criteria should be. He started the semester giving broad feedback, but towards the end of the semester, he completely stops providing any sort of feedback. THIS CLASS SUCKED!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. Look at the next 8 reviews that follow with an Awful rating, EXACTLY what I experienced and I agree with every word - we can't all be wrong! Doesn't give clear expectations, grades very harshly, doesn't give specific feedback on points off. Its self-study, the class Mean is a C. Don't believe all the Awesome 5.0 fake reviews.
Gets mad when you try to challenge him. So many times I would ask him to be more specific or to back up what he is saying and he couldn't and would "agree to disagree."
His motto is "I'm not like the other professors." He is one of those who trashes other professors for how they teach. HE IS VERY UNCLEAR. He will spend a week talking about one assignment and there will be three due that week that he never goes over. He grades based on how similar your work is to the class model.
One of the rudest people I have ever met. Does not care if his students are learning, just wants you to think he is the absolute best at what he does and nobody can be better than him.
Dr. Smith is a pretty tough grader, but he really does care about the success of his students and gives lots of feedback. There are lots of assignments, but he gives many extra credit opportunities throughout the semester so definitely take advantage of those. As long as you stay focused and turn in the work that's assigned, you'll be fine!
Very challenging class, a lot of writing assignments - some are very indepth. Easy quizzes, no exams, no final exam, no book! Dr. Smith is a tough grader but he cares aobut his students. When the pandemic hit, he removed all deadlines, sent almost daily inspiring messages and did everything he could to help us pass. Thank you Dr. Smtih!
Great teacher that really cares about the students success. Work do almost everyday besides the weekend but its easy work for the most part as long as you are doing tour part. Very responsive to emails and gives great feedback to ensure you do well on an assignment. I would recommend doing the work early so he can review it and help correct it!
I have never been a good writer and have struggled putting words on paper. This professor, however, never gave up on me, gave me specific feedback, and revised my work multiple times in order for me to succeed. He also offers several extra credit opportunities. If you work hard and show respect you will pass this class with ease and learn a lot!
I took him as a Summer A course. Lots of easy quizzes and no exams (just writing assignments worth a lot of points). He is a tough grader and wants the assignments in a very specific way. However, you can turn in drafts and he will review it and tell you what to fix. Do this with every assignment!!! You can succeed but will need to work for it.
I feel that Dr. Smith really cares about his students. However, if you can take another professor for this class I would recommend you do so. His assignments are brutally detailed, so much that the instructions start to become incredibly unclear. Also, if you so much as capitalize the wrong word, you won't get higher than a B on an assignment.
I have never had a worse experience with a professor in my life. Santa Fe needs to get rid of this guy or look into how and what he is teaching. He is not teaching correctly and sending kids out in the world with the wrong knowledge. smh
The upside? NO EXAMS! The downside? Insanely intricate, 4+ page long descriptions on how to complete assignments that are only a paragraph (4 times a week). You will learn nothing in this course. Just memorize his preferred formulas and copy and paste EVERYTHING. He's extremely willing to work with students, and he will tell you so.
Dr. Smith doesn't gets the credit he deserves. Yes, he expects a lot from his students. Yes, there are a lot of assignments. Yes, there is a lot of writing. But HELLO, this is professional writing! You can work ahead and submit your assignments for feedback and then resubmit. If you do what he asks, you'll get a 100. Overall, great professor!
It's one of those classes where you don't know how to pass. I had a 3.6 before taking this class and I've never had to work so hard just to PASS. He is very strict on how things are suppose to be done and his instructions are so confusing. I took his class as an elective and it was a terrible idea. Made professional writing confusing. Learned nothi
Great professor, always there to answer questions via Email and will review all of your drafts with detailed corrections. If you put in the work and seek help there is no reason to not get an A. Best online teacher I have ever had. Do not trust the low points given by slackers.
I recommend Dr. Smith to any student willing to put in effort to succeed in his class. I learned the most from him than I have from any professor and he really inspired me to continue to pursue a degree in english. He really cares about his student and wants them to succeed. I would take him again if I could !
He is very respectful of students and in turn, asks for respect. Although some assignments can seem daunting, he is there to help you succeed. Plan to work ahead, turn in a draft ahead of the assignment due date, and he will tell you everything you need to do to get 100% on all assignments. He offers ample opportunity to earn extra credit.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Gives amazing feedback and really helps you improve your professional writing (allows draft submissions and shows you how to improve). There is no reason to fail this class unless you slack off, he provides all material and gives plenty of examples. If you need help he is always there.
Dr. Smith gives VERY specific instructions for his assignments as well as providing many examples that you can sometimes copy into your own work. He will also revise your work as often as needed to help you get a perfect score. If you reach out to him he will work with you to extend due dates on any assignment, he is incredibly understanding.
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! This class takes time and effort, but Dr. Smith wants everyone to succeed. The work can be challenging, but if you ask for help Dr. Smith will do everything to ensure you have all the tools necessary to pass. I wish all professors were like him.
Dr. Smith is a great professor. I would highly recommend taking any of his classes. The classes are NOT simple, but he does work with each student to ensure they'll get a good grade. He is very accessible and will spend 1 on 1 time as needed. If you're willing to work, you'll definitely learn a lot from Dr. Smith.
The other reviews shocked me. I took him my first semester of college and i'm not a good writer at all. You don't write papers in the class it is just short assignments. He's super nice and if you try to have a relationship with him he's even nicer. The workload is light. There are quizzes from the textbook due at the end of the class. No major pps
EASY. I don't think any of our writing assignments were more than a few paragraphs except 1 which was about 2-3 pages. Writing assignments are specific but it avoids you getting a bad grade so read directions & he does allow you to turn in a draft of any assignment for him to view before you turn it in officially. He was awesome & super helpful!
Dr. Smith is an incredibly passionate and caring teacher. he is my absolute favorite professor I have ever had. grades easily and will be lenient on deadlines if you communicate with him. Highly recommend him!!
Dr. Smith is an AWESOME professor and truly cares about his students. He provides an online textbook and is lecture heavy but the assignments are pretty straight forward and easy, providing you put forth the effort. He also provides great feedback and offers to review your work prior to the deadline. Take his class, I promise you won't regret it.
Dr. Smith is very helpful, easy to approach, gives you lot of extra credit. Just remember the syllabus and his example or pattern on how to do the essay. Gives you a lot of time to revised your work. Accept late homework. if you have a problem just talk to him after class.
Professor Smith is an amazing teacher! He is truly passionate about his work and his students! He will review each assignment you turn in, and direct you on what to say and write, and allow you to turn it in for full credit. He cares more about your learning rather than getting everything right the first time. I highly, highly suggest him!
Dr. Smith is a tough grader - BUT that is because he provides you with a tremendous amount of resources to get a perfect grade. If you submit your assignments ahead of time - he will review them and provide tons of feedback for corrections. This is a class you do not want to get behind in. If you put in the effort, it doesn't go unnoticed by him.
He teaches life lessons and materials that will be used in the workforce. Dr. Smith is the BEST professor I have had, if you have questions just email him. He is a tough grader but if you complete the assignments early he will give feedback and highlight what exactly needs fixed. He makes this class much easier than it could be 10/10 recommend
This is the worst class I have ever taken. I don't see the value in this whatsoever. He's taken something fairly simple and turned it into a high maintenance, scramble of insanity. Theres links and paragraphs and lists everywhere. There's so much going on the actual instructions are lost. I do NOT recommend this professor or class to anyone.
I have not yet met a professor better than him. One of the only classes that I can confidently say I learned.
Dr. Smith is an amazing professor, and his LIT1000 class is easily my favorite college class I've taken. He genuinely cares about his students and wants the best for them.
you have a ton of assignments but it really boils down to one project worth over 25% of your grade. Tutoring would say I had a great paper, but then he's telling me that it's wrong. If you aren't willing to spend hours writing and revising, take a different professor. He will review drafts with you but the comments don't make sense.
Really tough grader. I went to tutoring and they would say my paper is great, yet I would get a C or B on it and his comments do not make sense. His instructions are very lengthy making it confusing. I liked that he allowed you to submit drafts, but the one time I did it, his comments were confusing and made no sense. Would not take again.
Prof.Smith is a great professor for technical communications. He gives easy to follow instructions and great feedback. There is extra credit and a lot of assignments but they are not very difficult once you figure out how to do them. Overall, he is a fair grader and gives clear instructions.
Prof.Smith gives his students a lot of templates and information for each assignment. He responds to questions and grades drafts in a timely manner. He is passionate about his work and he just wants his students to succeed. Take him he's an awesome professor!
I found this course to be incredibly confusing. He provides TOO MUCH instruction and I found it difficult to know exactly what he was asking for (I was not alone - many other students in the class were confused). Offers extra credit and he gave us a few extra points in the end which helped get me up to a B. Okay overall but struggled.
Due dates were constantly extended and changed, sometimes multiple times over. Set a due date and stick to it, and give out consequences for those who can't meet the deadline. Do not punish those who get it in ontime by extending it for those who did not do it. Feedback was terrible on writting!
Dr. Smith is a great and caring teacher. He can be a tough grader but submitting drafts really helps. Make sure to complete the extra credit opportunities, ask for extensions, and stay a few days ahead on the work or else you'll fall behind.
I am currently taking this class over the summer and it has been a pain overall, he only responds from 8-12. The only benefit is if you submit an assignment early he will review it but his response is very broad and confusing. As someone else said, he provides to many instructions which become counterproductive with not enough specific examples.
Do not take this professor! He provides way too many unnecessary instructions. If you asked for help on an assignment his feedback was even more confusing. I do NOT recommend this professor to anyone.
I really enjoyed Dr. Smith's class; he improved my writing and time management skills. He is kind and understanding but a tough grader. I earned an A partly due to having taken his Tech Comm class before. If you take his course, use his draft reviews and email during office hours. Stay ahead of the substantial workload.
Professor Smith is great - he provides detailed feedback and templates to guide you. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of it. Unstuckstudy was a huge help for prep. Overall, an engaging class with a fair grader.
This class is relatively straightforward with only about a discussion a week and a couple of "large assignments". Professor Smith provides everything you need: templates, expectations, and draft reviews. You do have to complete assignments ahead of time but in the end, it makes his class workload light. Overall, Professor Smith is great!
TBF Dr. Smith is one of the MOST KINDHEARTED profs I've ever encountered (encouraging, understanding, wants you to succeed and offers a lot). Course was overwhelming for me, many discussion posts, instructions for assignments were...too detailed? I found it hard to focus, but lots of EC. He offers to check papers but I could never meet deadline.
This professor is very good he helped me in this class since I was struggling but I made sure to submit all my assignments and extra credit. This class is a writing intensive so I would recommend to use the library a lot or even email him he always responds. He is very nice and I recommend him.
i love mr smith so much he's so nice and sweet, he's very understanding and i wish nothing but the best for him
Like the other reviews say, he does genuinely care and he seems like a great guy. Unfortunately, I learned nothing from this class. Most assignments offered a template for you essentially copy with slight modification, which was not a good way to learn for me, and when there were assignments with no template I felt lost.
Dr. Smith is outstanding! He genuinely cares about his students! He helped me make connections to receive aid. He always responds to emails and gives wonderful feedback. He lets you submit drafts of papers, and breaks down what can be improved and how! He gives so much support and acknowledges successes, which a lot of professors don't do nowadays!
For a professor of a technical communication class, he is severely lacking in effective communication. The instructions for each assignment are extremely long and wordy but do not clearly explain what should be done for the assignment. He copies and pastes the same 8+ paragraphs for each assignment, with maybe one or two slightly helpful sentences.
He should take his own class. Very confused professor who doesn't know what he is talking about. This class is a nightmare and it's because he makes it impossible to succeed.
This professor is the most nit-picky professor I have ever had before. He has templates you can copy and paste but then you learn nothing from the class as there is zero critical thinking. He will find reasons to take points off your assignments and the extra credit is the only thing that keeps me alive. His assignment documents are always broken.
Dr. Smith is a kindhearted, compassionate professor who truly cares. He offers plenty of extra credit and is flexible with deadlines. His class takes effort, but he supports you every step of the way. Many negative reviews come from students who were not willing to put in the work. If you try, you will succeed.
First English course I've ever had to withdraw because I couldn't get my grade up from an F before the drop date, makes his class very confusing, unable to understand any of the assignments, templates were hidden and rubrics/grading was unclear and just had an overall hard time. He is INCREDIBLY nitpicky and overall the class is not user friendly
This is the worst teacher I have taken so far at Santa Fe. DO NOT TAKE HIM. He gives horrible feedback, grades extremely hard, and by his own words says he uses doesn't use a rubric for grading.
Worst Professor ever. This is a simple course and he has purposely made it overly complicated. Because of this joker my grades have gone down. Never ever take this professor again. There are better professors who know how to do their job. This guy has no clue of anything and now i have ended up with a D+. I worked so hard.
Instructions had a lot of words without a lot of direction. Grades strictly and feedback is difficult to interpret. He gives lots of extra credit, which you'll probably need, and large assignments require multiple days of work. He is incredibly kind and understanding with extensions and is very open to helping you pass in extenuating circumstances.
Professor Smith is an AMAZING instructor. He's incredibly helpful, always responsive, and provides thoughtful feedback that has improved my writing. His dedication to student success, even in an online setting, is unmatched. If I could take every class with him, I absolutely would. My favorite professor to date.
I absolutely hated this class. There are a ton of assignments, and Mr. Smith is a very harsh grader. The instructions started more detailed, and as you go on, they get more and more vague until he expects you to know how to do it yourself and be up to his standards. You can make the smallest mistakes and get marked down enough to drop your grade.
Claims that there are "revisions" but will give you an assignment that is due at 8am the next day, so you have to do it in class to get a revision :) Then, you will get comments that do not help you revise. Perfect example is highlighting a letter of a word and says "clarity." Should be an easy class, but the grading is ridiculous. Warning.
