Prof. Bratton is very knowledgable about what he teaches. The class is not easy, but he is very willing to help.
This was honestly the worst class I have ever taken at CSUS. The lectures were all powerpoint and incredibly dry, if by chance, you are able to stay awake for the entire class period, you won't understand a single thing from lecture. There are 'weekly' quizzes, which rarely had ANY relevance to that week's lecture. HARD class- Suggest lab over lec.
wate of time take Hicks ;-)
Great use of humor and multimedia!
Sadly Bratton was one of the worst professors I have ever had. He never clarifies what he is talking about. Lectures are all power points with little interaction from students. He is reluctant to help when requested, and the tests don't correspond at all to lectures/lab. I got an A in the class, but feel that I learned nothing.
He is the worst professor that I have ever gotten. He does not explain anything at all. He hates it when two students ask the same question. He never explains the lab clearly, nor are his lectures any useful. Do not take him unless you know physic and can learn from the book. I've had 2 1/2 years of 3.7 GPA except this semester because of him!!!!!
He seemed pretty nice at the beginning, but the last few months of school he became rude. He can be pretty sarcastic & I also agree he is not clear in his explanations during lab. The lab drags on forever! I agree with other posters and didnt learn anything in the class.
Had him over at Sacramento City during the summer. Don't know why his ratings are so low here. He was "the" most gracious science professor I've ever had. If you didn't get an "A" you were just too stubborn to accept what he gave you. Sure, he would get grumpy sometimes during lab, but who wouldn't given the dumn questions he was asked.
Final is a practical exam, constellations and stars, nothing to do with the telescope he has you do pointless assignments on for the majority of the semester. For the first ten weeks of class, he always acted mad that we were even asking him questions. The majority of the lab assignments were confusing and the telescopes were so broken that some of
He was great. He didn't lecture at us he let us learn unlike lecture. He was nice the only negative was he said yea a lot but it was funny.
Not sure if he's still teaching or not, but this was probably the worst class I have ever taken in my life. Condescending tone. We never knew what to do. Focused on using telescopes the entire class until the final, which was pointing out constellations and such. Learned more studying on my own for the final alone.
All around he's an ok teacher, yea? Lectures not so helpful, labs are not bad, seems willing to help, yea?
All around descent professor
The worst professor ever! He was so angry that CSUS treats him like cr*p. Backbites on Professor Sergan who also teaches Physics and tells the class how. Stay away! He will make you sound stupid in front of the whole class even if you sound more intelligent than him.
This class was a joke. He was rude to the students and was extremely unhelpful and unapproachable during the labs. I learned more from the TA in a day than I learned from the actual professor over the whole semester. Never take Bratton for ASTR 6!
Great professor, dunno why everyone is saying otherwise. Got an A in his class. He's always willing to help.
I have no regrets taking Physics 5A and 5B with Professor Bratton. He's very smart with a good sense of humor. I have so much respect for him. He's very helpful on lectures, discussions, and labs. See for yourself. =)
I cannot stress enough how hard he is. He will give you a 30 page review guide without answers for each test. You will have to google the answers and commit them to memory. Only way to get a decent grade. You will also need to do the extra credit online assignments to pass. First test average 50%. I got a C.
Really hard boring teacher. Must read book always. But hey what did you expect PHYS to be easy? I liked that homework, quizzes and final are online. But his teaching skills suck. He says the word "yeh" 50 times every class.
Goes over lab material incredibly quickly, hard to follow/ understand. doesnt take time with students. is very quick paced. demeaning towards students if you ask a question, thinks you should know everything. will talk to you like your dumb if you don't knw how something works. very impatient. often leaves class for 15-20 min at a time during lab
Loved his class! I'm not a science major but it was one of my favorite classes ever. You will learn a lot. Don't be lazy.
did not like this teacher! doesnt have a good teching style. goes over info so quickly, that every group in lab always has questions, takes forever to come to your group. half of lab spent waiting for him to clarify something which he could have just done in beginning of lab if he went slower. says YA ? Ya? 100x during lecture, very annoying
awful teacher! definitely needs some work in his teaching method. is not patient with students, very aggressive and condescending. has a bad attitude if you ask a question, acts like youre wasting his time. donest clarify much of the lab experiment so all groups are constantly asking questions, takes up alot of time & hes always leaving the class!
easiest lab ever! he grades the labs easy- gives full credit for just trying even if you are wrong. he is really nice also, he is always willing to help and answer questions. he sucks at explaining things though. he takes forever to grade things too.
The professor does not return papers in a reasonable time. You will not receive all the labs back. The syllabus had date errors. He does not return emails. Hard to approach, does very little teaching. The professor did not prepare for the CCD lab, and blamed the mistake on IT department. The online section in SacCT only works with Firefox.
Was not a bad class as lec was all powerpoints. attendance with clicker. intimidating when it comes to discussion as he questions you if you don't know what your doing. exams are almost exactly like study guide. Exam 3 and final are in a whole other range! Very difficult! Formulas and calculations that you didn't even really learn in class!
Bratton can be intimidating but if you get over it then he is actually super helpful. Explains things in a lot of detail you just have to ask. i would take him for physics he is the best option there is.
This class did have good study guides for most exams, but it also got disproportionally difficult for the last exam and final as noted earlier. He failed to cover enough of the math based problems in class, and spent too much time with his group presentations. He did seem to get aggressive when presenters were not exactly correct.
worse teacher ever. he's very rude and doesn't care if you really learn anything. he really looks you down. do not take class with him
Easiest lab class ever! He does not like to answer questions, and gets frustrated when students don't understand, but he really enjoys astronomy and helps students to have fun learning about it. Easiness of the class makes up for his frustration with questions.
At first this professor is quite intimidating and the class seems nearly impossible to pass but as you get the hang of things it's not so bad. Hard? Yes. You must devote a chunk of your time to this class. The professor is quite helpful with questions. He does try and explain them so that you understand. The only good advice I can give is to study!
Professor Bratton is very easy to work with. All of the classwork is given to you beforehand. You basically do not need to attend any class except on the quiz days. He's an easy passing grade- he will help you! Just ask. Good luck!
I want to state that the Professor knows alot about physics, but doesn't teach it clearly. I found it more helpful to just learn from the book rather than attend his lectures.Although lectures are needed for participation grades.Just go to his office hrs.its way more helpful than his lectures. Trust me. he is a tad nicer too when it's one on one.
It's the first day of week four. Lecture is TWO WEEKS behind homework assignments due. Will cancel class without email notice. Unable to instruct if his PowerPoint fails. We've had our third homework assignment out of three due without being lectured on the material before its due date. I'm a senior and never seen such an absolute train wreck.
Prof. Bratton let me enroll 3 days late in the Winter Session and gave me all the catch up packets and gave me alottable time to get them done. He is a great teacher and if asked for help, he will. He gets a bad wrap from young students with the lack of self responsibility. Be motivated and work for it, and he will give you the grade you want.
Took him during the summer for 5A and 5B. It was the hardest class I had ever taken. Study! Study! Study! You are constantly doing homework. He knows what he is talking about, so ask him when you have the chance. However, learning it is another issue.
Professor Bratton is a wonderful teacher. His classes consist of mini lectures and lots of packet work. Fun class, and easy A.
Packets in the lab every week. You must show up to be able to fill them out, they are really hard, so make sure your group is smart. Professor treats you like an idiot, and it's really uncomfortable to ask him questions. Subject matter is cool though, and you never have to stay the full 3 hours.
He doesn't seem to want to help the students understand the material. He just throws the material at you and expects you to understand what you are doing. The exams are ridiculously tough. The average for our midterm was a 56. I hear the class is curved, but take him at your own risk. This class was harder than any of my upper divisions.
Actually in a strange way, he is a great teacher. He scares a lot of people in the beginning of the semester which makes them drop, but then the class goes smoothly. Tests are tough, we were allowed to use cheat sheets. Workbook presentations were intimidating but you get used to it. Best of the worst but really understanding and nice one on one .
do not take this professor, lectures are a joke, he reads off powerpoints. Physic lectures should be doing problems on the board to help student practice. You bascially have to learn everything on your own. he has major mood swings and will snap on you. Will treat you like your stupid which makes you not want to ask him questions. DO NOT TAKE
What is up with Professor Bratton saying "Yeah" after every sentence??!! So annoying and distracting!! He has some strange "yeah" Tourette's or something...
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR
His lectures are trash and he expects you to learn the material in 3 seconds. He can't go a lab without talking down to someone. Exams are ridiculously difficult. The average for each exam was 49% and he didn't curve at all. He is a very moody person. I suggest you don't take any physics classes at all and change majors because this prof was trash.
Worse professor ever. Hardly lectures and it is not helpful. Expects you to know what he hasn't taught you. When you ask for your grade he never has a clear answer. Makes you buy tophat which he does not use to it's extent except for taking role. Is very condescending and not approachable unless you want him to make you look stupid. Don't take him
Would never take this professor again. Gives you packet to complete in class but does not help students. Whenever students need help they rather not ask the professor because of his demeaning manor. Group packets and reading quizzes (in class), final exam is HARD, and classes ends generally ends early. Night time class meetings for labs.
Took him for my Astronomy Lab and this was a difficult class because he doesn't go over the material you will complete in your lab packets and isn't approachable (experience from me and strangers alike) also quizzes contain very few questions (so you basically know if you failed or not after your done) Make sure to do readings and show up
So starting with lecture, everything will seem to make sense and even in the lab. But then when you get to the homework not a single thing taught in lecture is useful for the homework. And the exams are similar in a sense that problems are similar to homework.
I took him for Astro 6 and I did not like his class. I did not like his attitude when you ask him a question, he made me feel like i'm stupid. Labs are long and boring and at home observation is pointless. The only good thing about his class is that his study guide for the final is the same as the test or almost the same.
I had Bratton for the lab section of Electricity and Magnetism. He gives a brief 5 min overview of the theory in question and may explain the basics of the lab. DO NOT MISS THIS so don't be late. You type up of a short prefab every week as well as complete a lab which will be done with your lab group. He doesn't do much besides answer questions.
Awful Professor. He really should have a different job. Its obvious he doesnt want to be there. He doesnt even really teach. If you ask him questions he makes you feel stupid. He waits till the end of the course to post grades so you wont know how youre doing. He wont respond to your emails. This class just pissed me off. Dont take him.
Professor rambles during class, reads of lectures, and never relates to his homework or exams. He is also uncondescending towards students and belittles them. However, the class is fairly easy to pass and get a good grade. No textbook so invest in chegg (100% in quiz & hw). Exam questions are drawn from practice exam and workbook. (Study formulas)
DO NOT TAKE. Worst professor I have ever taken. Rude to students who ask questions. Claims to respond to emails but doesn't. Rude in office hours. Average final score was a D. Tested on material that was not taught. Quiz questions DIRECTLY from book.
can someone comment when and how often you meet OUTSIDE of class (i have important classes and i dont want them to clash) thanks in advance lmao
Clayton is a good lecturer but that's about all. ABSOLUTELY no regard for his student. Fails to respond to emails on multiple occasions. He starts off the semester saying "there are no stupid questions" but then makes you feel very stupid every time you ask a question. Barely available outside of class.
Hes not as bad as everyone here claims he is. Hes very condescending but who cares. I took his 6week course and got a B+. His tests arent too difficult, all multiple choice with conceptual ?s and also calculations and also 2-3 problems that u must show the work for. However he gives you extremely useful study guides that you must study to pass.
He is EXTREMELY condescending. Which is a nasty characteristic for any human being let alone a professor who is supposed to HELP you LEARN. Understand the study guides and the FNT's. Study guides are very tedious and around typically 20 pgs. I took the six week as well and it was hell. Also, he doesn't round grades.
Single worse professor I have had at Sac State, talks to the board and refuses to write legibly or large enough for everyone to see. Will not help you with the material if you ask him questions. Incredibly rude to students unless you stroke his ego. Take someone else if you can.
Honestly he is just an unkind person that assigns too much homework, thinks he is better than his students, tough grader, etc, his problem is that he thinks a lot of work helps a student,,,not always fam--i was doing so much work i could hardly keep up or learn. Avoid him. He is not a good person, he needs help deep down.
Worst professor I've had my entire college career. Condescending when you ask any questions one on one. I had to suffer through his patronizing comments to gain any information. Doesn't actually grade lab assignments for correctness. You have no way of knowing if you are doing the work right or not. Does not post grades for anything. Do. Not. Take.
Material itself is more complex in 5B when comparing it to physics 5A. Unfortunately , Bratton is very confusing. The lecture material, and exam barely match up. This class is all about memorizing the study guides (200-300 questions). There is no emphasize on actually LEARNING the material.
I'll be completely honest about what I am about to say about this professor. I chose his class because he's very lenient in grading LAB reports. But, he was a horrible professor. He does not communicate clearly the details of upcoming exams, leaving us unprepared and often surprised about them. He is also very unapproachable as a person. The worst.
My first impression of Professor Bratton was that he was an arrogant you know what, but throughout the semester I realized hes a softie but hes got a tough exterior. He cares about students and answers questions. Dont be intimated but be prepared for him to counter questions, labs were easy and got to work with groups. Given answers for final!
Bratton gets a lot of bad rep for being a professor that "doesn't care". Overall Bratton is a great teacher in my opinon. If you ask him a question He'll give you the answer and more. He's a professor that I've really grown to like. Of course the class is hard, but its just Algebra based physics. If you want to do good ask questions
AWFUL PROF!!! Said that there were no stupid questions, but makes you feel stupid, belittles you, and yells at you if you don't know the answer. Doesn't respond to emails and don't expect to know your grade until after the semester is over. I argued with him every class meeting because of how much he belittled others. CLEARLY A MISERABLE PROFESSOR!
Why does professor Bratton have such a low rating, hes a good professor who is knowledgable and challenges students on the subject, as any intensive math or science course should be. Allows you to really show off your knowledge by presenting problems and gives you the exam questions. If youre complaining, its because you didnt apply yourself.
Professor Bratton is best to ask for help during office hours. He makes himself available outside of class and encourages his students to practice problems when not in lecture. I felt that he could have spent more time doing practice problems during his lectures. He was very lenient in his grading and wanted his students to participate and try.
Prof. Bratton isn't the best teacher. You'll struggle sometimes because it is a reverse learning class. You read the material on your own and come to lecture with questions. The labs are straight from the textbook and lecture slides but to be honest, he didn't really grade them cuz he gave full credit for all them at the end of the semester.
I don't know why Prof. Bratton has such a bad rating. He literally pulls his exam questions from the packets he gives you, mind you he'll change the numbers. This is extremely beneficial. I had taken physics one other time with a different professor and that was MUCH harder. He's a good professor.
Horrible professor for online at least. Lectures are minimal, and the labs hardly ever match his directions he gives you. Also never responds to emails and expects you to do everything like you have 20+ hours of free time in the week to crack open a physics book and watch 20+ videos to even understand one section.
This may be because I took this class online but who knows. This professor cancels lectures regularly, teaches you the bare minimum and gives you minimum instructions. The labs were extremely difficult,, mainly because we never went over them in class unless someone brought it up, and even then, the instructions were unclear.
He rarely shows up to class let alone teaches it. Then waits till the end of the semester to grade anything, and he doesnt respond to emails or questions. I have done well in this class so far but it has been due to anything but his teaching. Hes also insulting when you get something wrong that you werent even taught.
This guy is just flat out bad. Had him for lab. From his unclear directions to his terrible body odor. I wouldn't take him again. His lab reports are unclear and super long. Although you can find was to get around him if you know how to use you brain a little(iykyk)
Professor Bratton doesn't really teach if I'm being honest. He kind've just reads off the lecture notes the whole class. Overall, the class wasn't so bad, but if you can't teach yourself then don't take his class. Class consisted of 2 exams worth 100 points each and a final worth 200 points. There was also a project assigned as well for 150 points.
very tough class but professor was extremely helpful if you showed effort. HW is necessary to understand topics.
I had to drop his class even though it's required for me but first day he gave a test, second day 18 paper worksheet and the things on there weren't even talked about, he sat in the corner with his legs on the desk arms over his head and expected us to teach ourselves and ask questions if needed but I sat there and dropped.
Professor Bratton didn't really make it easy on us students. Wouldn't really teach in terms of whenever it would come to the lab side of things. He would just sit down and expect you to figure out everything on your own. If you had any sort of questions, he would answer rudely and a bit disrespectfully. He makes you think he doesn't care.
He was used a very negative tone when asked questions, I left almost every class frustrated. Mid semester he just disappeared and sent an email saying he wasn't coming back. He was replaced by a bunch of other substitutes which messed up the structure of the class. He gave 100's on all the labs, but you got no real feedback unless you asked.
He does not care about the class. He lecture are no help, his exam are tough really tough. He get angry when asked a question. His exams are so complicated. He is just not interstned in teaching.
I think his straightforwardness was mistaken as rudeness.. he was nothing like these reviews. He gives you full credit as long as you put in effort. He makes the class passable even if you do horrible on the exams. Do the practice exams & you'll pass. 2 pages notes front and back allowed for exams. He was helpful when I was struggling. Cool guy
He is a good lecturer and knowledgeable but labs are confusing and hes rude if you have question. No practice problems in class so tests are hard to pass, 1 frq and 10-20 MT &cumulative final. gives reviews with 300+ questions and no answer key. free textbook and online hw. would not take him again but doable if no other options though.
Exams are worth only 40% of the grade, and there is heavy grade forgiveness for your lowest midterm based on your performance on the final exam. Allows lots of notes. Expert TA homework was tedious and overall pointless. Has a tendency to end lectures early and ramble, especially on questions before the lecture begins. Pay attention to the quizzes.
He does not care about his students success. Lecture is ramblings about conceptual stuff that wasn't on exams. He did no problem solving despite the homework & exams being mostly math. His exams seem to be pulled off the internet & the final covered topics we didn't learn. I think he passed everyone in the end because most of us were failing.
He knows his stuff, but not the greatest at instructing. When you ask for clarification about the material learned from the lecture during lab, he makes it feel like you asked a dumb question. Multiple choice is alright, but the free-response questions can be hard. If you do not put all the work he wants, it's gonna be a 0/20 with no explanation.
Amazing teacher. Strange he's rated so poorly on here. His lecture and slides were clear. He was always happy to help answer questions outside of class. His labs were standard physics labs and he'd help if you asked. His exam questions were taken directly from study guides and quizzes. You'd have to work harder to fail than get a good grade.
Lectures did not help at all, labs are mainly simulations online and are graded based off effort. He did not bother to go over practice problems in lecture. There are reviews for the midterms and final but no key so they are practically useless. Worksheets are outdated and some labs felt unclear as to what he wanted. Horrible class. wouldn't retake
This is the first class I have taken where I genuinely thought the professor's teaching and formatting of the class was poor enough to impact the GPA of hard working students. Very short with students and discouraged participation with his attitude in responses to questions. Gave homework with no key so there was no way of checking your work.
Doesn't grade your attendence for his lectures but he does for his labs, went to every single lab and still got a 75% in particpation, tests are based on concepts that the lecture doesnt teach you, gets angry if you ask a question, he graded everyones midterm 1 wrong orriginally. You will only pass if you cheat on the midterms.
He was quite unprofessional and skipped many days of class during the summer semester. His tests were really rough since he would barely lecture and expect students to read the textbook/find their own resources to teach themselves the material, in addition to each multiple choice question being 8 points. Tests were only out of 80 points or so.hard!
Office hours! If you don't do homework you won't succeed. He is always willing to go over your homework and even guides through lab reports. Study the handouts because that's your exam. There are really no surprises. You'll have most of the answers prior to exam. Maybe not exam 1. He enjoys this. Lol
Grades weren't visible through term, many assignments weren't graded until after the term concluded. Term is over, professor is immediately unavailable until spring, and final grades STILL aren't public. Went to all classes, did all work both mandatory/optional, and still failed exams, the content was vastly different from what was taught. Rude.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. If you have testing accommodations do not take this class, he does not respect them. Exams are nothing like he says they will be. Tbh don't go to lectures just read the textbook. Gives everyone 75/100 for participation and overall just a rude guy
