The Price Is Right!
This guy is TOUGH, but you will leave with a SOLID FOUNDATION in C++
Hands down the best teacher I've had at UMR. He's hard but damn he's good.
Hard, but teaches what you need to know. Good teacher.
Do yourself a favor and take him
Good teacher...a little wiley
I am glad I suffered through his class
He's not *that* hard, but he sure is *that* good
Nice enough guy, course is easy. He knows his stuff in later classes.
Hes kinda hard, but you will learn C++. Very clear about assingments.
awesome teacher, wish he tought more courses..
Interesting guy. Has a farm. Good teacher.
He's insane and unpredicable. Stay on your toes and stay on alert. Wiley indeed.
Good teacher, hard quizes...
Quizes most every class. Very good teacher. You'll learn more than the others.
I took CS53 with him his first semester as a compsci teacher and he has really damn hard, he wrote on the board like it was a math class, writing far to fast for any normal person to keep up with him. He may know his stuff, but I learned nothing
Price refused to help me. I went in to see him during his office hours for help on an assignment and he told me that he covered that in class. I knew this as I never skip. Anyway, I should have dropped his course, because he refused to help me at all
He is a ratty little guy, but he knows his stuff pretty well. Is as entertaining as he can be at 8 in the morning.
Price is a damn good teacher who really knows his stuff, you cant miss a class and the tests are damn near impossible. He is a pretty funny guy. If you dont understand something you better get help asap or your screwed. He does care about his stud. though
Great teacher, but maybe thinks too highly of himself sometime!!!
Great teacher. Very entertaining. Keeps you awake. He makes corny jokes, but they're humerous. Quizzes and tests aren't too bad if you know what's going on (paying attention in class would satisfy this).

You will be thankful you had Price in the end. He is detailed on tests, but then again so are compilers! Very helpful if you ask him, if you need him outside of office hours make an appointment, he has work to do too. Also just remember siBob or any other

Kind of a cheesy person but a great teacher even if a little weird at times. Teaches very well and consistent work will definitely get you the grade..
Very clear instructor, and his tests are fair. If you want to learn numerical methods, I recommend you take CS228 from Price over the summer, as he covers more material than the instructors who generally teach the course in the fall or winter.
His tests are somewhat difficult, but you will learn so much from him. If you pay attention in class and do the homework, the tests really aren't that bad. You just have to know the stuff, plain and simple.
Good lectures. Corny Jokes. Helpfull anytime. Tests are fairly hard, but not impossible. Drives a nice Jaguar as well.
arrogant ol clayton. i thought his class was easy, i skipped a lot and he threatened to drop me till i got a 96 on the first test..the guy thought he was god and didn't really learn much new. likes to berate students.
He makes you come to class, but its definately the best CS class I've taken. Knows his stuff and mixes it up. He's a really cool guy.
good teacher, definately thankful i had him, in the end the work was well worth it, and my notes have been useful to people not taught by him.
Was not helpfull with programs.
I pretty much dont like the guy. He is pretty arrogant. He actually isnt that bad.
Completley useless class. Show up once a week, write a single paper the entire semester, get an A.
Unprofessional.
His jokes and cornyness break up how boring it can be sometimes and he always willing to help if you need it
Expect to work in his class. He will keep you busy and challenged. You will learn a lot, and your skills will be better for having taken his class. Oh yeah, and he knows it. --Most of the time, he's a little funny, too--
Makes things way harder than they should be. Sometimes funny but more annoying and wouldnt let me sit next to my friend in class.
Excellent teacher. He goes out of his way to be helpfull and get you going in the right direction. However he makes his class very hard on purpose. You will learn alot, even if your grade doesn't reflect it.
Grade has no reflection of diligent efforts. Exams are impossible for study, abstract problems defy materials covered in lectures & textbook, designed to be hard for people w/program experience. Doesn't restrain from marking points off excessively, uses his red pen imprudently. Positive side is no studying's needed, only cry for mercy on his tests.
Price will challenge you to know your stuff with pop quizzes and tough tests. However, if you have his file, his class is a lot easier (as he reuses a lot of questions on his tests). Be sure to ask for help if you need it, but be specific on what you ask. He hates stupid questions and lazy students. Do your prog projects on time!
The homework and labs are easy. The test will KILL you if you dont read and study the book. Funny teacher... not the best, but not terrible
This class is taught assuming you have c++ background, or some form of programming. He tried to be funny in the program assignments, but this causes them to be very pointless, unclear. He wants them to be hard as possible. He has surprise quizzes (might warn you a few times) that are hard.Tests verge on impossible.
This guy thinks he is better than everyone and he needs to get out of teaching.
Knows what he is talking about. Extremely effective in communicating the content of the course. One of the best professors I've had in a long time.
Very intelligent. Teaches material well and in an organized fashion. Available outside of class for assistance. Doesn't answer email very quickly.
Just an introductory course into CS. He made it pretty interesting with anecdotes about the field and his life. No exams or anything. The paper was kind of a pain, though. Will take for another class in the future.
Price is awesome. His section of 228 is always harder than the other one (Ercal this semester), but you learn so much more! The material itself is pretty easy (pretty much plug and chug formulas). You get a cribsheet on the last two exams. Price is the only person I know who can make a math class entertaining.
Well thought out coherent lectures. Thoroughly prepared for teaching the material. Assignments relevant to course material. Exams aren't too bad if you know the material well. No daily homework. A lot like 228's structure except you actually program the stuff you learn. Highly recommended.
Great at explaining stuff. is funny, and cares about your understanding of the material. Great teacher.
Good, but tough teacher. He really knows his stuff and will teach you very well, but his tests can be rather difficult. Has a good sense of humor and will help you outside of class. Good teacher overall.
Price knows math; he's not really all that great with programming though. While that would be workable - and is, for many of the CS profs - with Price it just makes his arrogance more grating. DO NOT challenge him - he won't like it, and neither will your grade. You'll learn a lot - but if you want to learn subject material, go somewhere else!
He is overall a fantastic teacher. You will learn A LOT in this class. His tests are extremely difficult. He has a great sense of humor. But his class is seriously, really difficult.
For us (morning Class) Shows up late, holds us late. Trys to fit too much content into a class period. Tests are written in a programming class, and graded hard. Assignments are difficult and graded very strictly. However is a pretty good instructor. Overall I'd try a different instructor.
Helps out a lot if you send him emails and stuff. Not sure what the quizzes previous posters are all about I haven't had one yet. Not too hard, attendance mandatory, tests suck.
Not preparing students for the workplace. His code does not compile on the chalkboard, or in his example solutions. (Confirmed by classmates.) Hard to compile when the syntax taught is wrong. Suggest that Price get a job in corp. America, and then come back to teach. Get a good book (like Zak, Cengage-has all topics from class), and learn ahead.
He expects you to show up, be attentive, and take the time outside of class to learn the material, so if you're looking for a near-free "A", look elsewhere. You know he cares for the students' success because he will answer questions and help you outside of class. Tests are not impossible if you're putting in the effort. You will learn a lot!
Price will teach you what you need to know to be an entry level programmer. He's a huge smart-alec and will joke with you if you play along. Pay attention in class and ask questions. He presents himself as intimidating but he's very happy to help. Tests are hard, but its a compsci class, you should know everything on it.
Definitly not an easy class! The homework takes a long time to do, and Price tells you that. Start doing it as soon as he assigns it or else you'll be pulling an all-nighter. The tests are very hard like some of these posts already said. At first Price seems really intimidating but as time goes on he is actually pretty funny.
Hilarious guy, and really helpful. Knows what he's talking about, and gives great examples. Loves to make jokes and puns, and makes class enjoyable. One of my favorite professors.
Hard if you don't know how to program. He is willing to help but advises you to quit/ give up if you don't understand. He grades harsh on assignments and tests. He will always tell you to figure it out on your own. Id recommend someone else if you have never taken programming before.
His classes are hard and pack a lot of information because they have to. Great instructor, has a good sense of humor, easy to talk to and get help from. Genuinely cares that his students succeed and has a realistic expectation from them as well. The class may be hard and he may cover stuff fast but its worth it.
Professor Price is the perfect embodiment of what professors at MST should be. The man molds minds with such precision and expertise that one would need to put in a significant effort not to learn something from him.
Dr. Price does his best to ensure his students learn. He answers questions in class, answers emails, and helps those who come to office hours. His class is tough in terms of frequency of homework (one programming assignment per week), but the only reason you'll fail is if you don't ask Price for help. NO TEXTBOOK REQUIRED; PRICE HAS MATERIAL ONLINE
Funniest most informative lectures I have ever had. Love this class. His lectures never fail to make me laugh.
Great teacher. He's a lot of fun and always willing to help you with programming troubles. Just pay attention in class and don't try to do something he tells you not to do.
He is one of the most helpful and understanding teachers I have had. He wants to know that you understand the material and appreciate any effort in that aspect.
Not recommending this class for non-comp sci majors
I loved this class.
According to the comp sci students, this guy farts glitter. So I was pumped to take this class. I thought he was condescending. They think he is hilarious, I thought he made jokes that privileged white males would think are funny. Maybe it's me, but he could stand to move his jaw a little more when he speaks. It's unsettling.
Very straight forward guy, says exactly whats on his mind. You will learn C++ from him.
Probably the best professor I've had in and out of the classroom. Is willing to help with material, gives honest feedback. Coding standards are a bit questionable but thankfully someone enforces some in the department. Overall really great professor, would recommend. If you've never programmed before it'll be a bit rough.
Price gives great lectures. Never coded before but caught on quickly thanks to his help. Exams, however, hurt me. Tests are HARD and are designed to trick you if possible. Price often seems rather condescending/arrogant, but that's his personality. The final is OPTIONAL. I skipped it and took a B. Solid course, hope you're up for the challenge.
Clayton is a wonderful professor. He cares about the material and he cares that you learn it. He's hilarious but he doesn't take any nonsense either. You'll get a solid understanding of programming from his class if you put in the time and effort necessary.
Professor Price is by far the best professor I have ever had, very funny guy. Knows what he is teaching and how to teach it well. Tests aren't easy and homework can be difficult.
Excellent professor. Price is very good at teaching CS. He's a funny guy, but he can come off as a little berating sometimes. He makes the lectures fun by throwing in his own humor. Attendance was not required, but don't skip class. The content is dense and attending class will be VERY helpful. Plus, HE KNOWS YOU SKIPPED. HE WON'T FORGET.
Homework assignments are tough, but youll learn a ton with him. Be ready to spend hours and hours each week writing code. Greatest teacher I've had. Will absolutely take another class of his in the future.
Price is a hilarious, but a terribly harsh grader. His assignments are also VERY unclear. It feels like he takes more time coming up with jokes than he does being clear with his homework. The homework starts out simple, but gets to be extremely tedious as the class moves on. Not neceasarily difficult, but tedious. Wouldn't have him again.
Price is a solid teacher who really cares about computer science and the development of his students. While the lectures are usually great, the homework, especially the later ones, can get extremely tedious and unnecessarily confusing. However, its still a good class. I would not recommend for non-comp sci majors, however. I've heard that's rough.
Women, or any decent human being, avoid this professor at all costs. All his humor is based around making other people feel terrible. He feels best when he's making someone below him in status feel their worst. I was his advisee and I have never hated myself or anyone else more than when I had to meet with him.
Review notes, get friends to help, and study online.
As a person, Price is a good guy and is EXTREMELY educated. However, as a professor he made my class impossibly difficult. As a EE major, C++ was never my strong suit but I taking this class an introductory felt wrong. Im an almost 4.0 student in my junior year and this was one of my extremely few Bs. Had to fight for it starting with a 55%
Great guy and thoroughly covered topics. However just like everyone mentioned he definitely has niche humor and is very strict grader, wouldn't recommend his class for the thin-skinned or non-CS majors. There are far easier intro CS professors, but Price had a bold personality that made the class interesting. Very hit or miss, choose carefully.
Knows his stuff and communicates it well. CS can be a complicated subject sometimes and he knows how to introduce topics gradually so it's not too overwhelming. Makes lectures interesting and provides plenty of online material if you need further clarification. He's also fairly accessible outside of class.
A quite difficult class, but that's run of the mill for the S&T CS department. Will teach some verifiably wrong things (and isn'y receptive to feedback) and encourage poor programming practices. Also the class is taught in C++ which is by no means a beginners' language. I would highly recommend picking up a book on Ruby or Python beforehand.
Not only does he teach bad coding practice and style, Price will verbally berate those who speak up in class. I've had several classmates answer a question correctly and get insulted by Price only for Price to phrase the students answer slightly differently and claim it was some sort of revelation. Avoid if you can.
His lectures can be entertaining, sometimes. But he is very condescending and will call you out personally. If you know C++ before you take the class, he will make your life miserable. He writes the homework in Price Language, and it's not remotely understandable by the students nor the TAs.
He assumes a student already has a basic knowledge of coding. As an EE student, I was completely lost. His lectures were interesting but not the most helpful. He has an interesting sense of humor. His tests were impossible. He seems to really care, but also takes pride in being tough. I do not recommend if you aren't a CS/CE major.
