Cliff is a very decent professor for both 160 and 430. He provides information in a clear manor and is always there to help you out. Tests are a little tough, but you will learn a lot by going to class and doing the required reading.

Incredibly smart guy. Awesome professor. Teaches very well. Makes everything clear. But you still have to go to class and do the readings. And if you dont understand something, he'll help you until you do.

I'll tell you all, anyone who's given Prof. Kern a bad rating is a dumbass or a slacker. If you come to class, and have half a brain, you'll do fine. Also, he's one of the finest lecturers I've had the privilege of having. A class act.

Makes economics more boring than it has to be. He draws diagrams and doesn't bother to explain them or label them so your lost from the word "go". If you can avoid taking this class with him, I suggest you do so.

I hate this man. Really anal in lecture. Tests are hard. He knows what he's talking about in lecture, but doesn't present it in a way that helps you out at all. Take micro with someone else.

This man is so anal. He treats the students like they are in elementary school with his stupid "come to front of the class" punnishments. This man always has this fake smile on all the time and I feel like he is mocking me somehow.

The lectures tend to be dry, but he does show a spark of humor now and then. However he really knows his stuff. Its not a class you can coast through. I liked him a lot.

makes material confusing, and tests are unfair and don't reflect the level of material taught in class..they're very hard and so he implements a huge curve..wastes too much of lecture discussing his "no leaving lecture or coming late" policy

He has a great deal of knowlegde about the principles of microeconomics, but his ability to express that information to students is a bit lacking. Also, his exams are terribly worded at times, and are not a true representation of what a student learns

Is clearly a learned man. He should NOT, however, be teaching.Very hard to understand during lecture and quite condescending during office hours. Exams are unneccessarily wordy & extremely confusing. Not reflective of course material. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

What is with the rocking back and forth? He gets so excited on stuff that he confuses the students with. The test are ridiculous!!! They're too confusing and barely actually tests what the student learns in class because he switches it all around.

Has amazing knowledge of the topic but only can go so far in explaining it. Very monotone; hard to keep attention. I reccomend the course if you're confident in your economics ability, otherwise expect much reading to be done.

extremley boring class. i slept so much in class i stopped going. hard tests. avoid this teacher if you can. knowledgable about the material, but apparently being a harvard graduate doesnt mean he is able to relay the information to students

Very nice guy, tries to do everything he can to help you study for the test. If you do the reading or at least pay attention in class, you'll do well. Just don't leave everything for the day before the test, then you'll never get an A..

Kern learned how to be extremely boring at Harvard. Easy class if you can grasp the material. Got B+ without going to any lectures or discussions. Just know how to do the problems on the tests and you should be fine. Too bad he's a Red Sox fan.

Kern is not as boring as others claim. He's well-spoken but his tone will put you to sleep. The material is easy- there's just a lot of it. The classes was graded on two exams (fairly straightforward), a tedious paper, weekly quizzes and of course, participation. Prepared to do a lot of work.

The rumors are true, he is boring. He repeats the same thing over and over again. Theres only 3 tests so it all rides on those but his grading policy is reasonable where you can drop one of the tests if you don't do well. Boring class, boring subject.

His class is great if youre interested in economics. He really takes the time to explain it. Makes it worthwhile to go to class at 9:40 in the morning. His tests are easy if you go to class and read occassionally.

I hardly ever went to class.. this guy is boring, due to his monotone voice. He knows his material, but doesn't know how to fluctuate his voice to keep students awake. It takes hime around 15-20minutes just to give announcements, whether it be hw or whatever... I don't suggest taking the class... Find someone else.

If you've ever wanted to take a class with the dad from "Alf", then ECON 160 is the class for you. Kern taught me a great deal, and I never once tried to eat his cat.

Prof. Kern will explain a concept seven different ways until you understand it. He gives pop quizzes that are basically free points, but you HAVE to go to class to know the answers! One of my favorite 3 professors here.

He was a horrible teacher. He is an economic genius but his teaching skills are terrible. I attended every class and discussion, and still i failed because of his incapability to explain things and fully answer my questions.

Nice guy and knows what he is talking about, he is just not good at teaching it. Extremely BORING class, tests are very hard. The coursework is easy but the tests are worded in a tricky way. Attend every lecture, stay awake, and prey for a good TA

Almost impossible to stay awake in class no matter how focused you are. Material is easy, he confuses the issue with his messy diagrams and endless monologues. Get a good TA, they are useful. Tests vary in difficulty, read the textbook.

The course will ruin your GPA. He couldn't explain a concept clearly if his life depended on it. His homeworks & tests were made on a typewriter and tests are overly difficult with 1 question worth 38%. He doesn't look at his students during class, has weird & distracting mannerisms, and I can count on one hand the # of classes I stayed awake for.

He is a nice adorable old man but class is extremely boring and hard to stay awake in. His teaching is kind of unclear and mostly based on diagrams, so if you're not a visual learner it could be hard. My TA wasn't very helpful either-each discussion had either HW collection or quiz, easy points. Boring but decently easy. getting a B w/not much effo

Awful professor: will make you hate economics- thinks poor class attendance is the sole reason students don't do well. I went to every class & disagree. After 20 min. announcements he draws diagrams that he explains with stammering and stuttering. He is monotone & uses knee bends & heel raises to accent words. It is both distracting and humorous.

If you are either interested in Micro or are planning on being an Econ major, please don't take this class with Kern. He will either destroy your chances of majoring in the class, or make you hate econ all together. Boring, won't help you, TAs don't show up to office hours, Tests based off of lectures (terribly taught lectures). Stay Away!

Micro with this professor will ruin your GPA. Stay away. Take it next sem with another prof if possible. Have not learned anything in this class and made me hate Econ. This class was a living nightmare.

I actually thought he was pretty easy. You just have to go to class and pay attention to what he does with the charts. Granted, I did get the best grade in the class on the final, but I really didn't have to study that hard. If people just paid attention, this class wouldn't be so hard.

This class was not as bad as everyone made it seem. He is funny and fair, he always stays on schedule. His tests are exactly the set up that the homeworks and class lectures were so if you go to class and pay attention, you will be fine. There are curves and he is always available to help you.

Avoid taking Micro with Kern. He is hard to pay attention to, unwilling to help his students, the TAs can't help, yo have to teach yourself the material. After doing badly on the 1st two tests he told me I had no chance in succeeding the class. I studied and learned the material myself and got a B+.

Kern is and old geezer. His lectures are boring but semi mandatory since iclicker quizzes are given. Lecture can be relaxing, but only because your doing other stuff on your iphone or laptop. Focus on the homeworks.

He has a terrible stutter. use the study for AP micro, you won't learn anything in class. The discussion sections are useful, and tests are similar to the homework.

If you have an interest in Economics or haven't taken an Economics class yet, DO NOT take it with Kern. He is dreadfully boring and purposefully makes multiple choice questions tricky and convoluted. He is a nice man, but easily in the running for one of the worst teachers I have ever experienced. Save yourself from this nightmare if you can.

Best professor I've ever had in all of my years of college. A very fun, laid-back, chill, funny guy. The guy truly cares about his students and makes it a point to get to know each and every one of them and will be there for you after you graduate. Other professors should pay attention to this class and see how students really learn.

Lecture is mandatory with iClicker. Monotone, attempt to express sense of humor and knowledge but his voices zZzzZzz. Tests are managable but hard, to some extent, in the way that his sentence structures are confusing and misleading at time. Read textbooks before every lecture so that you won't fall asleep halfway.

Pretty much, I had to learn microeconomics on my own. Did terrible on the first two tests but the final pulled me through considering it could be counted 80% of your grade. Go to class because there are clicker questions, and try to pay attention despite how monotone he is

homework due every week and quizzes in discussion must go to lecture for clicker questions- 15% of grade fairly difficult class, don't fall behind because it gets hard not the best lecturer so prepare to learn the majority of the information in discussion uses unordinary chartsdiagrams

He is completely inflexible when it comes to grading. If you have a legitimate conflict with his test, too bad. If you have a legitimate reason for missing class, too bad. I had to show him an obituary of my recently deceased friend just so I was excused for attendance. Still, he only said maybe. I get As on tests, but expect a C due to his rules.

Profoundly boring and generally disinterested in teaching a way that doesn't make all of his subject matter convoluted. It seems as though he understands the material but internally hates the fact that he has to share it. I would've rated lower on clarity if I could; I wen't in with a mild understanding of concepts but he made me doubt that.

iClickers make you go to class and homework due every week in discussion. Lectures are boring and very monotone which make it very hard to pay attention and learn anything. I did awful on the first 2 tests...I guess we'll see how I'll do on the final. Overall he's an awful professor who should retire already. Kinda cute old grandpa though.

Struggled in this class. He is very nice but unclear. Most students are in agreement with this. I wish he was my grandpa and I feel bad people make fun of him but I really like him as a person. Due to his unclarity you will struggle on tests. I like his format for grading but I wish he was just clearer. It's just his personality. It could be worse

He writes questions in such a fashion that literally wording could have you fail a test as opposed to your actual knowledge of the subject. I've never met anyone so disinterested in how much his students are learning, he goes so incredibly slow in lectures that it's incredibly hard to pay attention to his monotone presentation of simple concepts.

Prof. Kern is a nice guy overall. I never had to visit his office hours or anything, if you attend lecture, stay focused(monotone voice), and study the previous exams from BB, you'll be fine. Go to your discussion section to hand in homework (very helpful) and participate, this will help your grade. Don't really need the book.

Professor Kern is a great guy who always has a smile on his face. However, he only gives 2 tests which basically define your grade in the class. Pop quizzes are easy if you do the readings. If you need an ECON elective, I would recommend him over other professors.

This was a truly engaging and in-depth course about urban studies. We engaged in practical and relevant studies of urban patterns and even met with city planners in New York City. Clifford Kern's youthful spirit and charismatic lecture made coming to class less of a chore and more of a... blessing.
