This class is pretty difficult. The lectures don't help all that much when trying to do the homework and also taking the tests. Dr. Harper is an awesome teacher though. He is always willing to explain and go over problems with you one on one. To do well i

Difficult subject, but it was easy to pay attention. I recommend reading the book because the lectures are not that helpful and studying for the quizzes. Be sure to buy the book of notes made by Harper, because many test questions are from this book.
Very knowledgeable, good sense of humor. Always available for questions.
The subject is one of my favorites, but the lectures are kinda boring. Some people seem to have trouble staying awake in class. If you pay attention and take notes, you should do well in the class though.
Fairly easy teacher. Lectures are a little boring so its hard to stay awake. His tests are fair and he does not try to trick you. Overall he is very knowledgeable and a good teacher.
You Go Boy!!
5 quizzes, one final. final easy too. lots of extra credit offered. don't slack on the quizzes though. can be detrimental.
Homework is the key, but you better ask questions during office hours. Tests were difficult. Always do practice exams. Try to get a lot of extra credit. He curves class if possible.
double thumbs down! lectures are boring, sits there with his laptop all the time in lab, and even if you go during office-hours, he superficially explains the problem...not my type. tests are ok..physics has become a nuisance with him..
he is only really available 4 hours a week outside of class, and is usually late to his office. weekly homework assignments are rarely from lecture, but hidden in the book. The book is for engineers and not for students. Does provide practice exams.
Mostly interested in his yacht. Not aware of his students (doesn't look at you when answering your question). Doesn't grade his class's HW (student grader), so he doesn't know what needs more explaining. Generally unavailable and dismissive. Difficult HW.
He keeps the class humorous and, when answering questions, he shifts his eyes like an old 20's movie villian. He chooses one person to give all his in class extra credit. Gives very terse and insufficient answers to difficult problems.
people who complain about him are usually the ones who either don't come to class or don't read the text = get a bad grade. his lectures are interesting and he gives extra cred, and you get what you put into the class.
Harper's class is as straight foward as it gets. The study guides are the quizes and the quizes make up the final. Dont have to go to class at all it doesnt help its way boring. Easy A
i hate science with a passion. i never went to class, never studied, did very little extra credit, and still passed with a B
This class is really hard but he does offer study guides that are very close to the actually test. If you don't do well on tests don't take this class because that's what your final grade is based on. The average grade in my class was a C
DON'T TAKE HIM! Boring as HECK. I fell asleep EVERY time! Quizzes and tests are ridiculously hard. Take Wallingford. Much cuter, nicer, easier, and more fun. Harper also doesn't give much extra credit. I had to drop his class cuz I was getting a D. :/
Doc Harper is awsome! I took his tele-video course over the summer. If you take it, do the homework because the test questions come off of it. It was an easy "A" with about 3 hours of work for 4 weeks. Nice and CLEAR. Extra credit helped out
fun teacher. show up and answer questions for extra credit. easy A
Dr. Harper is by far the coolest teacher I've ever had. Not only is he awesome, he gives out study guides almost identical to the tests, and is quite helpful if there's something you don't understand.
Total jerk. easy class. I had an A until the end when he decided not to give me credit for the online quizzes that I would have taken, except he took them offline 2 days early. then told me I had a a- before the final, I did well on the final, and he gave me a final grade C!!! should be fired!
the class is soo boring n you dont even need to go. just show up once in awhile to get study guides and the tests are not easy but not too hard. hes not really approchable and doesnt give much interest to the students
He's a good teacher, knows what he's talking about. Class can be a little boring, but overall its easy if you take the online quiz before the quiz and final you should have no problem getting an A.
This is a very easy, pleasant class. However it is EXTREMELY boring. Dr. Harper was a very kick back cool guy. I'd recomend taking the class because everything is so straight forward. Do the online quizes b4 the test and study from the study guide and you're goood to go. VERY easy final also.

the worst teacher on campus.teaches absolutely nothing. we need wallingford to teach all the physics classes at MC!!!!!! ron if you read this, we need your help!!!!
His way of teaching physics is the worst. He gives you his notes and goes over it in class. We can read the notes at home. This is physics for god sake, He needs to solve problems in class, but he doens't. He thinks he is something big. I suggest you take prof Becht for all your physics classes if you can. Becht is a little hard but much bett
easy with the study guides that are basically the smae for the class

VERY EASY CLASS. BUT VERY VERY BORING. YOU DONT EVEN NEED TO SHOW UP(only on quiz days) and you can still get an A
BORING. WHEN HE TALKS, HE LOOKS AT ONE PERSON AND TEACHES. I FEEL LIKE HE DOESNT NOTICE THE REST OF THE CLASS. IT IS HARD TO FOCUS IN THERE BECAUSE OF HIS RELAXED VOICE. HE GIVES MANY OPPROTUNITIES TO GET EXTRA CREDIT OR DO BETTER ON THE TESTS/QUIZZES, BUT OTHER THAN THAT....IM NOT DIGGING HIS CLASS.
Harper is a much better teacher for these courses than Wallingford... whoever said that is crazy. Wallingford is a good teacher for simplifying... an easy A. Harper is good for learning the hard stuff- with a pretty easy A in my opinion
This guy is real cool. I missed a lot of class and he let me make up everything. Although boring at times, interesting stuff, and as long as you do the practice tests online, and show up most of the time you should do well. Take him, he's cool and not too hard.
A boring class but most things are interesting!!Not pleased with how he grades got a C instead of B but a knowledgable teacher none of the less.
Great physics teacher. Nice man. Always has interesting things to say. He grades fairly and is willing to help but he's a bit short on time sometimes. As for astronomy, I bet most of the complainers think Astronomy is boring anyway.
do not take this class,,, worst teacher ever... i had an a the entire time and then suddenly got a b after the final...so boring... worst teacher at moorpark... class is sooo lame... i like astro too!!
He's probably my favorite professor. He knows the subject almost too well. Study, do all extra credit, homework and practice tests, and you will make an A. Hard subject, but he is almost always available during office hours and he will help you. Pay special attention to the multiple choice on tests, cause that is where you might miss most points
This guy was always a jerk to me when I had a question. Gave insufficient answers. For a measly 3 unit course, the materials were almost $200. Wasn't able to take practice quizzes becasuse I couldn't afford the book. Favors certain students, grades accordingly.
"Mostly interested in his yacht." That reviewer wins. Harper is a reasonably nice human but a horrific teacher. Assigns pointlessly overcomplicated homework that drains ALL your time and requires going to his office every week to get "hints," the magic explanations that he somehow never got around to in lecture and the HORRIBLE BOOK can't explain.
the class is very intresting and pretty intriguing but its also important to study by taking the practice quizzes online and in the back of the book. if you do that and do just like one of the extra credits you should get an A. the class is cool to go to but almost pointless because he reads out of the book and you can just do that for yourself
I dont know what class the other students took but I have just completed 60 units at Moorpark and this was by far the chillist class I have ever taker. I hardly studied and got over 100% in the class. So easy. 80-85% of the test quesions come from online quiz. Lots of extra credit.
Dr. Harper is very helpful but you have to break the ice first as he has so many students he can't actively help them all. For physics, homework = meaningless; practice exams = everything. For Astronomy, that class was so easy it was unbelievable. Study the online quizzes and if you can't pass you shouldn't be in college, period.
I took this teacher for a televideo course over summer it was a 5 week class and the easiest thing i have ever taken. There was test once a week and almost every question came from the online homework assignments. I watched videos went to class once a week and it was an easy A.
Overcomplicated. Lectures rant on and on, trick must be to have a better textbook and teach yourself beforehand. Office hours visits practically required to do homework. Infamous HW Grader "Jack" is an **** and a half.
Dr. H is an awsome teacher. He's always willing to help you understand homework problems if you ask. So easy to get an A because of all of the extra credit. I have over 100% in the class right now, and I didn't ace any of the tests. Jack isn't a horrible grader, the students just turn in horrible homework and expect to get a good grade. Take Harper
Took the televideo course and had to meet 3 times. Had a C before I even took the final. One the easiest classes I've ever had. Didn't know a thing about Ast. He gives many opportunities for extra credit. The online HW can be done over and over until you ace it. Very helpful teacher. I learned alot . Televideo course lets you work at your pace.
This isn't an intro. class. His exams are tricky, but expected. I have a B average in exams yet an A in the class going into the final. You can't blame Jack if you do your HW the day it's due and expect a perfect score. The students who get 5/5 or better on homework aren't complaining about him all, I wonder why? It's just his job, get over it.
Taking physics "Harper Style" is the way to go. This dude talks like a hippie, jokes around with you in class, throws extra credit coupons at you with candy wrapped inside, and has mostly general awesomeness. I didn't learn as much with him as I wanted to, although it was smooth sailing compared to Becht's total craziness. Harper="A+", Becht="B-".
Overall his lectures are designed to give you insight on the topic , but for real understanding you must read the book. His test are what should be expected, challenging but not to difficult, except for his freakin final this year ( way to hard/ not able to prepare for). do the homework and rework exams like 1 week before test. enjoy
televideo course, HW online easy just take it over and over till you pass, Hw worth 130pt got a C with just the HW, Has sample test / quiz from all class online, Didn't have time to read book so watch the DVD and study HW and pass the class with an B. Would of been happy with a C. Nice teacher and want you to do good in class.
fun and aswome professor how trys to make the clss fun
This is most definately not an easy class to pass. more than 1/2 the peopl left. Tests are ridiculous! My advice: Get all the extra credit you can on the HW! It's hard to get real help from him. You can check you answers to HW before turning it in but if you're wrong, he doen't explain why, he just says to try again.
I took the video course. His tests were easy if you did all his practice quizes/tests and the homework.Study that and it was easy to get an A.Only saw him 3 times (for intro class and tests). He did quick reviews that helped a lot and any time I contacted him he was very receptive to my questions. I would def. recommend.Wish I'd taken the REG class
Challenging class but not exremely hard. As long as you have some background knowledge of calculus and physics you'll do just fine. Although, his teaching style assumes you know what he's talking about all the time.
Really cool class. Let's you study last semesters exams. Really nice and very helpful if you need it. Make sure you do all the homework and get 100% it's an easy A.
Best professor ever!!! The most intelligent person i have ever met. If you are not an idiot you will love Harper! Take Ron if you want a retard and an easy A, but take Harper if you really want to learn.
I simply loved this guy... he was great... i highly recommend him.
Do not take his forum class. honestly, most boring class in the world.
He is a very nice teacher..I enjoyed his class so much very interesting..sometimes he is hilarious...If you do all the sample papers atleat twice and if you do the examples in the text book you will surely get an A.He is very helpful...I recommend anyone to take him
Prof Harper is the chillest teacher ever. I got an A no problem. I didnt read, I didnt pay attention, but did great. Just do the practice quizzes and the super easy extra credit. Harper.... love the guy.
Forum class is very, very boring... the notes follow a paper textbook for the class. Its an easy B for the laziest of people just try staying awake.
Dr. Harper is a DELIGHT! I wish I would have taken his forum class, instead of the PACE course (DVD/Internet). I would have loved to hear his lectures. One can see that he teaches this class out of love for the subject, rather than money. His analogies and object lessons really help you to understand the vast universe we live in.
He knows what he's talking about and he is great at answering questions.
No doubt astronomy is hard...and i got an unexpected A, but it was made possible with his help for sure. Don't be afraid of the online quizzes, you can take them a thousand times until you get 100 % and they are questions right off the tests (they all together equal 1 whole letter grade). He was very sweet and helped me pass this tough class.
Study the old tests provided on the website. He uses the same questions over and over. There's a lot of extra credit. You don't really need to go to the lectures, but they're interesting. I used my book once. And he wants you to do well. He'll go over any questions you have. And there wasn't any homework.
Funny. Plays favorites. Study and you will pass. Lots of extra credit. Very boring though
funny dude, class was hard but i didnt really put much effort into it, dont need to use your book, class is passible for sure
Wore the same shirt every single day to class. Literally every class.
harper was the best teacher ever! this class was so easy. he gives you practice quizzes that are done online and you can take them a hundred times until you get a 100%! study the old tests he has on his website and you'll ace every test and his class! it's a piece of cake!
If you happened to be in this class, be prepared for listening to him chat about his yacht (most of the time), daughters and some irrelevant stuff. Get all the extra credit you can! He never really helps and loves to say, "It's easy, you can do it," whereas you have no clue of what's going on whatsoever. DO practice tests, otherwise you are doomed.
This teacher is not very good. He expects everything he teaches to be easy, yet he doesn't realize that were all still trying to learn the material for the first time so it's no as easy as he thinks. Has his favorites and doesn't answer questions unless your in the front row. Bad at explaining concepts because he thinks it's all easy. Bad teacher
He's just a really fun, sweet professor. He loves it if you come in to class every time (and really you should). He never makes fun of you if you answer incorrectly and encourages participation. TONS of extra credit -- if you don't answer correctly, he gives you partial credit. Also, he allows you to check previous exams for right answers. :)
Nice man. Buy his book with power point pages. Definitely do whatever extra credit he offers. Also, do all practice tests and check answers in his office. Some memorizing since it is so much material. Final is cumulative, but also gives practice finals from previous semesters. Most successful students are those that check tests.
Pros: Knows what he's talking about, and his class is engaging. Cons: Tests are ridiculous. You HAVE to take his practice exams to pass. His lectures do not explain the concepts 100%, as you'll usually have to go in and ask him to explain it better. He's very helpful in office hours though, but he really needs to work out examples in lecture.
awful experience. tests had too many trick questions, we werent told that online homework was mandatory till last 2 weeks of class, code didnt work. emailed him, never got back to me. said "tough" wen it didnt work. very neglectful teacher >:(
Unfortunately he's the chair of the physics dept. That said he failed 66% of the class on the first exam. He never looks at homework since he has a TA to grade everything. Students were constantly flooding his office hours in order to get clarity on homework problems. Also he spends far to much time showing how to derive equations.
He gives a BUNCH of extra credit. Easy class if you study for the quizzes. Nice guy
he teaches like you know so much about physics already. lectures aren't helpful. throws extra credit candies in class, do all practice tests, test frq's are really similar and multiple choice too. Gives hmwk to TA to grade. TA is an idiot. He will mark you off a point if you don't put the exact right heading and don't forget SIG FIGS.
Funny dude, corny jokes, very helpful if you stay after class or go see him in his office. Test are tricky but if you know the material its easy! Material is not hard. Make sure you do all the extra credit you can and all the online activities. The practice tests help A LOT, they are old tests from previous semesters. Take him totally.
Took televideo course, murder me please. horrible. i watched every video and still felt lost in the stars. his sample tests are completely different than the one he actually gives you. he basically gives you all the areas to study and expects you to KNOW all of it. bleh. i studied for hours and i am usually a straight A student. my first C. boo
Unless you are taking this class by itself DO NOT take this instructor. He is the epitome of someone teaching just for the accolades. He is very passive aggressive towards students in class and his tests do not reflect what he lectures, or the text book he uses.
Both the book and the lectures contain very little of the info you need to do well on his exams, so you are forced to depend upon him to help you outside of class, or to get info from other students he already helped. Arbitrarily difficult. An inefficient way to learn. His office hours are an exercise in academic codependency.
most simple way to put it is that he is a bad person. way too high of an opinion of himself. i am a straight A student yet he accused me of cheating with absolutely no proof. boring lectures. sample tests are not nearly as helpful as he claims. belittles anyone who disagrees with him. he is probably the most unintelligent person to ever hold a phd.
WOW, hardest professor out there. Lectures are basically pointless, all you get from them are formulas which you have to learn how to use yourself. You better be good at teaching yourself from a textbook, because this guy does not teach. Super hard tests, although he does give sample tests(these are your only hope!) Wouldn't recommend for 20A
I had him a few years ago for Physics 20A and Physics 20C and he was a great professor. The key to doing well in his courses are to do the conceptual problems in your book and work through all of the examples. Physics requires a lot of time on the part of the student, and don't skip Physics 10A. I wish Dr. Harper taught at my uni.
A very hard class. I studied at least 15 hours a week to get my A. Harper is always willing to help and is very passionate about the material. He cares about his students. Not the best teacher I have had but it was a fun class. It was very hard though so get ready to devote your life to physics
I'm not sure what the poor reviews are about. Maybe he had a bad semester? When I took him he was great. I wish all of my instructors were like him. He gave a lot of examples, was always happy to answer questions, and let us check our homework with him before turning it in, and gave extra credit. Physics demands studying though. Do book examples.
He is a great teacher, he goes above and beyond for his students. Everything is explained very clear, he makes learning fun and knows his stuff. One of the best Teachers at moorpark. Tests arnt bad if you do the study guides. He offers some extra credit too.
This class can get very boring, but overall Harper is a good teacher. The tests may seem difficult, but LOOK AT THE PREVIOUS SEMESTER TESTS, study those along with the practice ones and you'll do great. He also gives you plenty of extra credit so it's kind of hard to fail. He is also always willing to help you if you go to his office hours.
Harper is great professor! Although some lectures may be boring, he really cares about his students. He give A TON of super easy extra credit and even helps you with them. If you don?t understand or have questions he is always in his office during office hours. Take advantage of those!
Dr. Harper is great. Physics is not an easy class, so don't expect an EASY A. Do the homework and check the answers with him before turning it in. There is no reason you should not get 100% on homework each week. He will even help you with the extra credit problems. Do the practice exams and you will be fine.
Homework is REALLY helpful for a good grade. Very lenient with partial credit on tests but you NEED to study the practice exams! Physics is the hardest class I've ever taken, but Harper is probably the fairest teacher in the department. Clicker questions at lectures make attendance required, but you can study the book by yourself if you want.
god help me i haven't been able to decipher a single one of this man's lectures. he'd love to help you but i think he qualifies as one of those genius types who can't lower himself to our processing levels. tests are all exactly the same as archived old ones, you'll be teaching yourself everything out of the book, 'A' is doable with PERSEVERANCE.
As a teacher, Harper does a fairly good job in explaining the concepts and uses a lot of physical examples to get his point across. The problem being that you have to learn most of the material on your own. The whole system of teaching needs a revamp. If you keep up with reading the book, do the HW, and study the example tests you should do fine.
He's an excellent teacher but generally super boring, especially at 8AM. Take a later class if possible.
Very boring class. You will be teaching yourself from the book and should use his previous tests to study. He gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit.Only 5 tests and 1 final. He didn't get me very intrigued or wanting to learn more about the subject
Let's make this clear, physics is a hard class. I did well, though it required a lot of study. Practice tests from past tests are the key to doing well on the exams. Sometimes his lecture will not help you on the homework, though, I enjoyed his lectures and in class demos. The man KNOWS what he's talking about. Best choice for Moorpark physics.
lets get one things clear, Doc Harper is THE most helpful professor at moorpark. theres a reason why everyday there is a ridiculous line outside his office. nobody will sacrifice as much time and energy to benefit their students. just do as much extra credit as you possibly can and TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE ONLINE PRACTICE TESTS and youll be fine.
If you do all the homework, complete all the extra credit, and study all the previous tests you can get an "A". Overall I enjoyed Dr. Harper's class. He's a nice guy who really loves Astronomy.
I took Doc Harper's online Astron 101 class and I have to say I'm an A student but I'm working hard to maintain my A in this class. There is a LOT of reading and a video series that correlates with the reading. It's self-paced so you have to be VERY disciplined. If you do the reading and study all of the former exams he provides, you will do OK.
Harper lets you work at your own pace, so if you procrastinate I would not recommend this class. There are 10 homework assignments that you can take as many times as you want. The mid-term and final are fairly easy and he gives plenty of review work to go over beforehand.
Personally, I think professor Harper is OK. What I have problem with, is the nonsense of having to take this class and other classes that absolutely have no affiliation and relation with my major! (I am an English major). The educational system should be revamped in terms of offering "related" courses to the students, and not wasting their time.
Great professor very understanding and very helpful. Wants his students to do good.
