DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! The class was so hard it was ridiculous. A 100 level class, and he teaches it like graduate level. He won't bend on any of his opinions, but that is beside the point. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR OR YOU WILL DO VERY BAD!!!

Dr. Hewan is a good professor with the traditional foreign way of teaching. In US, most of the students dont know their own geography, cannot speak their own language, let alone their foreign policy in other countries. His classes are difficult but you certainly learn a lot. He is upfront about his biases and does he does not expect everyone to think the same things he does. He is only rude if the student starts it and he is always willing to help with difficult parts of the content.

If you have always attended college at NKU, yeah you probably would think Dr. Hewan class is very hard because you have to WORK and UNDERSTAND to get the grade. As a visiting student, (also attended UK and Xavier) this was one of my easiest courses. Sorry to all of you that were challenged! Me=A

Dr Hewan is certainly not afraid to delve into important and controversial issues that were relevant to the class and our lives outside of the classroom. While my opinions did not mesh with his, discussions were always kept on an intelligent level, producing interesting arguments.

I took his class several years ago. I got married during the semester, and he make me bring in my marriage certificate and receipts from Cancun to prove I went on a honeymoon. Then, I had to bring in my uncle's death certificate for missing that class. He still dropped me a letter grade for these absences. This professor is very unkind. DO NOT TAKE

This man rocked my world! His class makes you think, and I understand that that is hard for some people, especially the ones who gave him a bad rating...It doesn't matter if you agree with him or not, you just need facts to back up your opinions and he is fine. Use some intelligence for once, and this class will be a blast!

You have to read, if you think you are going to get away w/not doing anything you are wrong. He is a challenging teacher and you have to get past his rough exterior. You may not like what he has to say but he's got facts to back it up. Be prepared to work your butt off, ask lots of questions and you have to agree w/his view to pass.

He is a great man. The problem is everyone goes into his class w/ an ethnocentric view and thinks he is bias, but the truth is they're not willing to learn. I learned a great deal from this man. He is a challenging professor, but you will take a lot w/ you after taking his course. Besides whoever said college was supposed to be easy?

This class was fairly difficult but it opened my eyes to new ideas. Hewan emphasizes reading and thinking for yourself, but if you are looking for an easy class I suggest you take a different professor.

I'm 28, almost 29. I transfered universities (to University of Kentucky) and graduated back in 1998. Partly b/c of Hewan and other inspiring professors, I embraced the outside world, launching business and residing in three continents. Hewan continues to be one of the major positive influences in my scholastic and career developments.

Dr. Hewan is a smart guy and has strong views that offend close minded republicans. He is not afraid to tell the truth at a very conservative school and if you take his class you will learn alot. Take notes and study those and your good to go for an A. If you dont take notes dont even show up to the exam.

Great professor very approachable. Not as tough as he likes to think he is. Fact that so many are talked out of taking his class makes class size very cosy indeed. I enjoy listening to his views although I don't always agree. Very knowledgable and interesting. Expects a lot but isn't that what education is all about anyway?

Dr. Hewan is an excellent professor and scholar who I would recommend to anyone, but be forewarned, you will work HARD in this class. He's always prepared for his lectures and does an excellent job teaching those willing to listen. I had no interest in this class before taking it, but I soon changed thanks to Dr. Hewan. Great professor!

Dr. Hewan could be the best professor at NKU. He is straight forward and honest, and he really lets em have it...whoever deserves it, that is. He is tough, but fair, and you will learn a lot about the world from him.

He's all right generally speaking. Problem I have with him is all he does is read the notes off to you which really sucks for students who are almost completely visual learners like myself. He has a habit of reading the notes way to fast too...

Dr. Hewan is a very nice person. He is friendly, funny, and always tells good jokes. But one item I cannot get past is that he wouldn't even send his own children to school here because our school systems aren't good enough. How can you knowingly take a class with him knowing he doesn't even think himself to be good enough?

Hewan is ok. he WILL let you know how he feels about things, and WILL "highly recommend" about a million books to the class since he reads constantly. overall, i liked him although i think his grading is highly debatable. on one essay test i got a C. the next essay i studied the same amount and gave the same quality essay and got an A. why was

Hewan is super liberal in every way possible. He claims to be open minded, but he's not at all. He literally called a kid stupid and kicked him out of class for disagreeing with him that the only reason we dropped the atomic bomb on Japan is because America is ****. His tests are farily easy but if you are opinionated save yourself the bad grade!

What a terrible experience. I read all reviews on here prior to signing up and thought he sounded like a good guy as I am liberal too. I withdrew from this class as the guy has no ethics, distorts truth beyond belief and is downright close-minded. Google him and you will find some of the things he has done which should give you a clue.

I had NO interest in politics before taking this class. Dr. Hewan is very interesting...he has many life experience stories of being an Jamaican Ambassador for over 15 years. All he does is lecture besides the stories. I took 30-40 pages of notes for EACH exam. He will not give study sheets, says he teaches to learn, not to test.You will STUDY HARD

He is a wonderful professor! We often talk about rascism and he sheds light on so many things that many people are not aware of. He is very passionate and he brings up controversial issues. if you are interested in politics and learning the secrets that the media hides from ppl then take this guy. but many intolerant ppl cannot stand him

Dr. Hewan gives you a point of view that much of the world looks at us today(+ 1 point). Discussion in class would get pretty funny at times but be prepared to do hand stretches for a TON of notes. 3 Tests, two essay and one multiple choice. Essay1-easy, Essay2-KNOW the chapters, Test3-no study guide :( Good Guy but contradicting many times.

Hes really smart, but very pompous, hypocritical and anti American. He kicked someone out of class for disagreeing after Hewan said the US bombed pearl harbor because they were noneuropean. Hes a nut case in my opinion. 2 essays and a 100 Q MC worth 60% of your grade. I hade a 98% before the final, but ended up w a B in the class.

I stayed long enough to get a 98% on the first test. But the constast racism, twisting around of information, and disrespectful nature towards students was too much. I had to meet with him and the department chair to recieve a refund of my tuition for the course. Even during this meeting he continued to insult me and acted as a child. WASTE OF TIME

I have taken Dr. Hewan three times, and received three A's. However, his views are offensive and prejudiced. He said on Colubus Day that he hopes Christopher Columbus is burning in hell...I'm not kidding. I am a very liberal individual, but Hewan is off the map. I guess you just have to accept some people for who they are.

Dr. Hewan is a good guy. That being said, he is the hardest poli. sci. teacher on earth! He is hard to follow during class and OFTEN goes on tangents about racism/Bush/Jamaica! It's a tough class! It was my only C i've had at NKU. Beware, but get ready to be challenged!

I took his class specifically because of these comments. I wanted a liberal prof. Bad idea. I barely scraped by a C and got A's in all my other classes. He thinks we all get **** every weekend and says he's not free in America. He loves his "little island of Jamaica." Hard to understand also. Not recommended but not discouraged from either.

i love professor hewan. i've taken his class twice now. he may be one of the most difficult professors, but after finishing his class, you will have a better understanding of the world. I highly recommend his class for anyone who is willing to open up to another point of view.

I to evaluate a professor as a whole, not by just one off-hand remark or comment, but by what they offer practically speaking, Dr. Hewan would sidestep any opposing questions/statements and wouldn't accept different views as valid. He would gladly berate you than see another viewpoint, ironically he preaches being openminded to other views.

No, he is not easy (should a college course be easy)and he really is not difficult to understand. It is not that he does not welcome other viewpoints, but you have to be willing to respect his at the same time. This guy has been a diplomat to 3 different countries, if really take in his class, he has a lot to offer. So, try harder students!

Dr. Hewan was my mentor for my Honors Paper. I learned more from his classes then any other class on campus. You will work hard but isn't that what college is about. I took 4 or more classes from him and earned all A's and we didn't see eye to eye on anything. Be educated in your conversation with him and you will be fine.

I LOVE Dr. Hewan! Yes he is very hard and challenging but if you go to college you should be open minded and ready to work hard. HE is very willing to help you if he sees you put the effort in your studies. He forces students to think critically and see the world as it really is. If you want to learn and get good use out of your money TAKE him.

But he does have his moments were he makes you feel uncomfortable, but he is only trying to prove a point! He isn't doing it because he hates America or White people! At first I really hated this class and really didn't like him! But after awhile I found I really started to respect him as a professor. YOU MUST READ THE TEXTBOOK!He is very opinionated but once you get past that you see he is an amazing teacher! He doesn't make it easy he expects your very best. I was worried about taking his class from what I had read but its not so hard.My complaints: His biased opinion starts to ware on you after a while, if you ask a ques. for clarification on his notes, he just rereads them. He gives statistics of America compared to Jamaica and even if you show him the untruth on UN site he wont say hes wrong.

Somewhat difficult to understand. Very much liberally biased. Repeats useless information daily. Tests are graded very difficult. I had a good idea of what the question would be and studied extensively because I wanted to impress him and got a 72%. He pointed to my use of shorthand (2x) as unacceptable and handed the paper back to me.

Do not take him!! He's very intelligent and knowledgeable but it's not worth risking a bad grade. Very bias in opinion. He gives you his facts not actual facts. He reads off papers the entire class period. It gets horribly boring. There's three exams, two essay and the last multiple choice. about 200 questions.

Worst class ever. Lecture is taken directly from the book, and what isn't is irrelevant or biased opinion. He inherited this class from another professor and did not modify the syllabus at all, leaving everyone confused about due dates or requirements. Grades seem to be given arbitrarily and paper requirements are scarcely given.

Meh. He's annoying, produces false statistics, and never admits he's wrong. He believes that all Americans are stupid and goes out of his way to impress this upon you. Despite this, I find his diatribes to be at least somewhat amusing, and he's been one of my least annoying professors this semester, but that isn't saying much.

He is very rude, and just a little to smart for his own good. I feel sorry for him to be honest. He doesn't have a good outlook on anybody or anything. You get what you put in, but he definitely doesn't promote a healthy learning environment for college students, especially Freshmen. I wasn't pleased with him what so ever! Turned me off to NKU

It is possible to get an A in his class. Just bring your lap top and ignore him. His lectures suck. He's not very helpful either. I read the book and did fine on the test. Attendance is mandatory. Test are always essay based and there were 4 short papers required. Easy 400 poly sci class.

Dr Hewan is intelligent. I'll admit that. But he's also arrogant, smug, jaded, and reluctant to talk to a student as an actual person. He despises Americans, particularly the white variety. If you want to learn International Politics, avoid this idiot. However, if you are looking for a re-education camp, this is your guy.
