Really good teacher, clear, informative, passionate about what he's doing!
Very good professor who cares for his students. Hard classes, and his exams aren't easy, but if you understand the concepts then nothing is too hard in his class. My only problem was that the lectures are too long
His lectures are clear but his exams are HARD. Every question on the MT/Final was basically calculations. MT class average:60%! Very few theory questions or graphs. None of the shifting left or right stuff, all math!! Lowest grade I've ever gotten in an Econ course.
BEST PROF I HAD IN 1st YEAR! Macro Econ can be super dry, but he made the class enjoyable. I can't recommend him enough.
interesting lectures, informative slides, super helpful and smart prof. everyone in econ major/minor really should take one of his courses.
Good prof, VERY DIFFICULT exams, hard assignments but you will learn the material very well.
All math! If you aren't good at calculus, take a section without him!
Clive is fair and helpful, but his courses are very hard. I found him much harder than Gateman (that's saying something!) Having received A+ in macro and micro in Gateman's class, I struggled to maintain a B. His final exam was impossible - had to extend the exam time for an extra half hour on top of 3 hours and we still couldn't finish.
Extremely good speaker and very dedicated, a very good teacher. However, exam was impossible. Like the previous poster, the total exam lasted almost 3 and half hours, extremely difficult.
I don't know what you guys are talking about, his exam was easy. Skipped class everyday to get high, crammed the night before on adderall and got an 82. final was just LONG.
Clive is a great professor, he is very clear both on the material and what he expects from you on exams. The final was hard yet the class average in the end was respectable so I have no complaints, a good class!
Bit more of an update after marks came out from previous posters - Clive was very fair and ended up scaling the final exam quite a bit. Average was reasonable and many did quite well as long as effort was put into understanding the course and doing the mandatory assignments.
He is funny.
He explains stuff really clear, but takes a bit of class time. If you take Gateman's class and take his test. It will be easy. He is a very helpful guy in general. And his British accent and occasional FAILS made the class fun in away.
Great professor! Very clear lecture as well as lecture notes that has been prepare for you to download( this makes it much convenient for you to pay attention to the key points and thinking about it rather than copy the notes down mechanically)But you will have to buy new books if you take his Econ as you need to get aplia code to finish assinment
Great guy! He's funny and engaging in class, and provides easy-to-follow notes. His exams are straight-forward when an ample amount of studying is done, which is nothing short of fair. He's also very approachable before/after class and through email. Overall, he genuinely wants his students to do well. Really, really admirable professor!!
HE IS FUNNY. I think he's a great prof, and his notes are pretty clear. His tests are fair; they're challenging though so know your material.
FANTASTIC Prof. Lectures were always interesting, and he explained the material in a way that was accessible and funny. And the British accent just made him all the more charming. Midterms weren't bad, but the final was very difficult. His lecture notes are excellent, and make actually attending unnecessary.
If you've experienced Gateman's wrath before then Chapple's class will be a breeze, but if you haven't, keep up because he's more difficult than the rest of the first year professors. His lectures are amazing and even if you can learn it on your own, go and listen to his yummy accent. You won't regret it!
Fair proof. Very clear and informative. Study the hell out of his lecture notes and online quizzes. Midterms and final were fair.. but EXTREMELY long
fantastic prof! his lecturing is great, he goes over lots of interesting facts and examples for the class which helps our understanding. His midterms are about as fair as it can get.
Prof Clive is amazing, if you can take any class with him do it. Trust me you won't regret it. If you are a slacker and are looking for those gpa boosters then forget about it. But if you are a student who likes to actually learn , then this is your guy! Also he has a british accent which makes him sound even smarter :)
Great Prof. He keeps lectures interesting and his accent make words like HST super fun. Skim the textbook and do aplia assignments. Go over Qs at the end of chapters in the textbook. Midterms and Finals are tough but fair if you know your material. I'd recommend him.
Awesome Prof, Easy Midterm and Final
clear and helpful notes, fair midterms and final
Chapple was an amazing prof. He knows his econ theories and he communicated them very clearly. His notes were helpful in class, but even without rereading the notes and just using the textbook, one can get good grades. Do problems at the back of each chapter and make sure you go to his office hours. Aplia is easy marks, do it. Get him for Econ 101!
I loved Chapple! His accent is to die for and he is absolutely hilarious! Make sure you do the Aplia assignments, they are the easiest marks you can get to boost your grade up. His midterms and final were definitely fair, you just have to read the textbook and really attend lectures. His provided notes are wonderful :)
Chapple is amazing prof and the best prof for ECON101 and ECON102. His lecture is super clear and he prepare the notes for you at Vista so that you don't have to be busy in copying the notes,so you have time to think more about the lecture. He looks really solemn but his jokes always make us laugh... The best prof that i have in 1st year at UBC
best prof so far I had in UBC. Voice is really clear and lectures are great! Also he looks like an hollywood star
He has a very dry sense of humour and comes across bitter, but he is fair and a good teacher. Exams are fair. I liked him.
My favourite prof I've had at university thus far. He's funny, a great lecturer, and just an all-around good guy. Totally crushing on him. His midterms and exams are a bit difficult, but if you grasp the material fairly well, you will succeed in econ--no matter the professor. Chapple makes class enjoyable. Loved the Seinfeld u-rate quiz, btw.
Pretty straight foward class, he is also very happy to anwser any questions you have in and out of class. Not as an interesting lecturer as Gateman imo, he doesn't really go off topic. He uses clickers in class and that usually is the highlight of his lectures. His tests are kinda screwed up though... wrong anwsers = negative marks.
Good Prof! As long as you understand the material, you will do well. Much more fair tests than Gateman's. Strongly recommended.
I love this guy! CBA is a tough course, but I wouldn't want anyone else to teach it. His lectures are very clear, but his midterms were hard. I would definitely recommend this course, even though it is challenging, you will learn a lot. Also, he has an amazing accent!
Prof. Chapple is a very good lecturer, however this course is very abstract and not very applicable unless you want to go into public project planning or CBA analysis. If you're looking for an easy econ subject, look somewhere else. If you are looking for a tough subject, enrol in this class. Note that Clive makes the course worth it either way.
This course is easier than ECON370 and once again Clive is the highlight. It should definitely be said that ECON371 could be taught easier than what it is. Most of the course you find a lot of analysis through diagrams and curves. You don't need a high level math background, but you can't help but feel like you could be learning an easier way.
Great Prof. Clear, friendly and pretty entertaining. Clicker questions make lectures more exciting. Exams are difficult but fair.
Lecture styles are engaging and awesome! But there are TOO MANY grammatical errors and typos in his notes and assignments, and he sometimes posted updated correction last minute before assignment due dates. His exam was long and impossible to finish in the time given. Test things that he didn't teach. End up scaling A LOT.
Fricking harder than Gateman, at least in my opinion (10% discrepancy). His assignments are also less lenient as opposed to Gateman. Web assignments have only one try, and redos are average based. If given the option, go for Gateman.
Very clear! Fair midterms! Exam was a bit tough but still fair if you know the concepts. Chapple's notes are well organised (print and fill in during lecture) and he takes time to explain thoroughly. Clicker qs a bit unfair but it was his first time using them. DO APLIA! Free marks. Tutorial handouts were helpful - qs on exam!
go to labs and do the lab activities! most of them will show up on the exams. first exam very easy, second one not so much so be warned and study hard! you will do well if you put in a solid study effort and keep up to date with the material-there is a lot of it. loved the textbook-very simple explanations of difficult concepts
Fair prof, hard a bit like gateman - but at least you can somewhat expect what to study, 1st midterm was easier than 2nd - go to tutorials - qs from there!! only thing i hated was the penalties on the True/False for his exams, e.g 2.5 for a right answer, -2.5 for a wrong..yikes!:/ m/c were okay, written is better, mostly comes from lecture notes :)
Outstanding prof in an outstanding class. Not only covers the mechanics of the subject, but addresses fundamentals so you are not simply taking his word that whatever was covered in class is actually the case. Also extremely encouraging outside of class both in regards to clarifying the existing material and where you may want to take your studies.
prof chapple is very helpful.Test has two parts:T/F,mcs,and long question.Long questions are basically same as his assignments. To do good on T/F and mcs part, you have to truly understand the topic and be prepared for tricky question.AND BE PREPARED FOR LOTS READINGS.Midterm average was 52%,but he ends up scaling A LOT.
Amazing prof, he is so funny and engaging. If any questions on the exams were answered incorrectly by the majority of the class, he would take the time to teach it specifically in class or send out a mass email. He is my favourite prof at ubc so far.
A beautiful, brilliant man. Can't recommend him enough. Truly inspiring.
One of the best lecturers Ive had. Easy to follow with simple, logical lines of argument. Also, great sense of humour.
FAVORITE PROF AT UBC, EXPLAIN EVERYTHING SO CLEAR AND TEACH IN AN INTERESTING WAY WITH A SUPERFUNNY SENSE OF HUMOR.DEFINITELY RECOMMAND TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Very clear, concise, and passionate prof. He will go out of his way in class and out of class to make sure you are able to get the material, don't be shy to go to his office hours!!! His tests are very challenging however so study hard and study well and you should get a decent mark. The stuff he teaches, you won't forget. :)
Best prof I've had at UBC so far! Even the 1.5 hour lectures fly by with his precision, wit, and enthusiasm. Fair exams, but study hard. Definitely go to his office hours even if you don't need help with any of the material - he's just a fantastic human being.
Chapple was awesome. Clicker questions seem hard at first but they make the class challenging in a more engaging and entertaining way, and he scales them generously in the end. Exams are fair, but tough, but he teaches well enough that class attendance is sufficient to comprehend the material. All-round great prof.
very interesting lectures and accent; need to be prepared for lectures; exams are very tough and he is a harsh marker
Good lectures, and very enthusiastic about his examples and the subject. Challenging clicker questions require you to be following through the lecture and thinking well conceptually. Midterm was not "easy", but graded very fairly.
Chapple is a really good prof. But the mid terms and exams were hard. Have to pay attention in class to get a good grade.
Passionate professor that is very clear with going over concepts of the course. His lectures are very interesting, and often humorous too. Midterms and final exams are very challenging, requiring a surprisingly deep conceptual understanding of the course to get a decent grade in.
Funny guy, made economics very interesting. Some concepts were challenging- Dr. Chapple did a good job explaining, though self-study and motivation is needed to go the full way. Online assignments were surprisingly light, clicker questions scaled very generously, and exams were challenging but fair. Study hard if you take this with him!
Very engaging prof, good speaker. Always managed to keep me interested in the lectures. However, it seemed as if he taught the material at a very basic level, then gave us questions on the midterm and final that were several steps above what we learned. Very difficult midterm and final, and I didn't do well even though I studied a week before
Dr. Chapple's passion for economics is very contagious. Not only was he an engaging lecturer, he was a very effective and eloquent one as well. He always explained concepts very well! Midterm and final are very tricky, but they are basically just harder versions of problems discussed in class.
One of the best profs I've had so far. His notes explain things clearly. In class I clickers are tricky, but they are meant to prepare you for the test and are scaled generously. Aplia is basically free marks if effort is put in. Attend, lectures, tutorials, and do practice problems at the back of the textbook and you will do well.
Chapple was a fantastic prof. His lectures were engaging and covered the material in depth. His iclicker questions and practice problems were great exam prep. His scaling was also a great help.
Prof Chapple is great. He gives out fill-in notes which are super helpful in class, and is very responsive to questions. Readings provide additional support to class material, and he makes it very clear what's to know. Exams are fair. Go to class and study, and you'll get a good mark from him.
His class is extemely organized. Notes are posted online. Basically no need to study the textbook. You can get a 70 if you understand all the notes and attend the class. He is absolutely my favourite prof!!His marking is very fair. So dont hesitate!!! Take his class!
BEST ONE IN UBC he has a science background, so VERY MATH BASED need to take his course before u leave not hard if u work for it. be aware of group homework and free riders, choose ur team wisely
Really great prof, very engaging but makes you work for it! Don't skip classes if you want to pass
Absolutely one of the greatest profs out there. His lectures are engaging and fun. I really do feel like I understand what he teaches. It's always a joy to go to his class. His exams however are rather brutal. If you want to pass, show up for class.
BEST CLASS I've had so far. I definitely agree that his enthusiasm for economics is contagious, I always look forward to attending his classes (never happened to me before). His lectures are both interesting and extremely organized, I know exactly what I needed to know. Some concepts can be challenging, but he makes it challenging in the fun way.
Great prof! Available if you want help, grading was pretty fair. Entertaining. No complaints. If you take 370 though, the 200 dollar textbook isn't worth getting. Hardly used it.
Amazing lectures, brutal tests.
If you have the chance to take his class, DO IT. He has the best lectures, and makes students really understand the concepts. If you pay attention in class, you will for sure get what he's talking about, and econ will be so much easier. AMAZING PROF!
Clive Chapple is by far the best Econ prof. He posts class notes before lectures so one can preview and fill in with notes from lectures. His lectures are very clear and engaging, and he is pretty funny. DEFINITELY GO TO THE LECTURES, a large part of exams test the principles talked about in class. I am running out of characters: go take his class
A VERY VERY VERY VERY Good and crystal-clear interesting British man.
If you want to be a real economist, take classes with him. Clive is a nice lad, great prof, but chelsea fan.
Chapple is definitely one of the best prof in econ department. He has well-organized notes and explains the concepts clearly. He gives clicker quizzes in class as part of the participation marks. He is really helpful and make sure you go to his office hours!
Great prof , great lecture notes and organization, very clear on his teaching topics. However the tests are very hard. Overall, this subject was very interesting and I learned a lot but he makes some very hard midterms and finals.
Take this class. Economics as it should be taught.
Explains concepts very well. If you're interested in the topic, this class should be easy. Exam multiple choice is brutal but the long answer questions (worth a LOT) are quite easy. He is a great teacher so I recommend going to class, but you could easily get a good mark using his notes and the textbook on your own time.
Easily the best lecturer I had this year. He posts incomplete notes online, so going to class is important, but his lectures are interesting and easy to follow. He has rules, and expects them to be followed, but is very willing to help if you ask. I also really liked the TA's.
Great teacher overall, made the subject interesting and you can actually look at CBA's after and have an idea of what's going on.
amazing, funny and FAIR prof, very clear, make you love econ. Hands down the best prof in the department of econ BUT! I wiped my brain for his midterms. Such a struggle.
One of the best professors I've had. Choose his course only if you are serious about the subject and is ready to commit your time and effort to it.
Really didn't enjoy his teaching style. Gives good lectures, yes, but no computers are allowed and he made us print out all the lecture notes and hand write on top of them. Not my style, get with the 21st century. On top of that, no real material to work with when studying for midterms/finals. Tough grades on exams but balances out with clickers
A clear disconnect between the textbook, what is taught in class, what is assigned as homework (which is extremely excessive and an inordinate focus on presentation) and what is examined on the tests. The tests are hard designed to trick students. Lectures get confusing and have lots of repetition that gives a facade of clarity
Avoid whenever possible and clearly overrated. Lectures tend to focus more on iClicker questions rather than teaching concepts on a fuller deeper level to better prepare students for trick economics and math questions on his exams. Consistently late in meeting his own deadline for uploading materials on Connect.
instilled in me a life long aversion to economics and a complete loss of passion and confidence thanks to his teaching. Exams are harsh+ inaccurate measure of learning. There is an inordinate focus on presentation and histrionics to create an facade in lectures and assignments. More clarity is needed with tests grilling students to the core.
Can be rude such as yelling 'shut up' to students and cursed before. Satisfactory ability in breaking down harder concepts to explain to students ;however, even his breakdown is not enough --- either his lectures are not clear or tests are not reasonable. Launchpad is inaccurate at times. iClicker question are average in terms of usefulness.
First econ class in college but even then the class seemed much harder than other sections. Can be a bit unapproachable at times during office hours and lectures are too fast paced at times. iClickers seem more focus on getting the right answer than actual learning. Requires a strong math foundation.
Able to explain the concepts and break down concepts. However, judging by his tests, he needs to work on being more clear and better explaining the math behind the concepts to ensure his exams are equitable. Quite willing to answer questions but not willing to answer questions beyond the material (e.g. studying technique
As others have stated this is not an easy professor. Can be moderately helpful but not helpful like other profs. Clarity is not lacking terms of delivering what is taught but it is lacking in terms of understanding the concepts fully as he only partially explains the concepts ( well) but expects students to deduce everything else from his partial
Dr. Chapple understands what he is teaching. His exams are hard and you need to do the questions at the end of the chapters to do well.
Not enough practice problems for exams. Exams are super long and not easy but grade will be scaled.
Econ is not fun for me but professor chapple makes it interesting and delivered it with a great sense of humor. If you come in sleepy you'll come out energize. He's very clear and helpful.
Be your own judge for hardness but exam averaged hover between 62-70%. Often late in uploading documents on Connect and often time typos are evident on answer keys. iClicker usage is too high in his class with a greater focus on scoring the point than learning. Structure of lectures can be enchanced.
Textbook is not of much use in this class except for the dreaded launchpad assignments. Multiple Choice e harsh with roughly 50% average. Lectures need to be more focused on the content and not side stories , which were attempted to give a humorous effect but was more distracting than humorous; some of them are jokes at the harshness of his course
Clear and concise lectures. Study of his lectures to pass the module and hence attending class is imperative. Helpful if you seek help.
Greet professor with lovely British accent and fascinating sense of humour. Crystal clear explanation of the subject, so lectures are helpful to do well if one pays attention. Exams are relatively hard but not extremely hard. Understanding concepts, rather than memorization, is key both to enjoy the class and gain good grade.
Lectures were sufficient and hes open to questions on a usual basis during his lecture.
Mannerism has improved in term II such as no longer yelling 'shut up' to students. Overall he was above average; delivered material to an adequate level and students need to make logical inferences from the material to do well on tests. Would have prefer more focus on inferences than morally suspect jokes (Eg drinking, aggressive driving).
Very harsh, intense, and stressful course where 2 students earned an A+ out of about 100 students. The irony was that the testing regime in this course worked best for those who crammed right before the test. Lectures were quite good though but he should work on showing an interest in students learning and if students truly comprehend his lectur
iClickers were helpful in illustrating concepts best when you got the question wrong; its a pity many people care about the correct iClicker answer only and never pay attention to the intuition. Assignments were easy but presentation was a huge focus. Lectures are well thought out but reading the textbook and attending discussion is enough to ace
Very inspirational in teaching microeconomics. Before the class I didn't see human behavior as all logical/mathmatical where MBMC. However, after the class I can now see how most if not all actions are based of this notion where society operates on a MBMC relations - be it social interactions to buying goods on both a personal and societal lvl
Clive is easily one of the most effective profs I've had the pleasure of having. It's no secret, his exams are pretty tough and you'll have to work for it. All things considered, I finished the course with a reinforced understanding of micro theories and, maybe most importantly, with the desire to learn more. 10/10 would recommend!
Though at first class seems engaging, it rests more on histrionics for engagement. With MCQ assessments hovering at 50%, learning/clarity is lacking. Resiling from properness, he often posts assignments late and typos on answer keys. Personally found yelling 'shut up' to students offensive too. He's a great person but not that great of a prof.
Instructor Chapple does have interesting lectures and a refreshing dynamism in class. But it can be indimdating to make mistakes in class at times. His exams are overrated in harshness; they are not hard if you think flexibly. He also does seem to show less care in students learning than others but this was only my first year.
Professor Chapple delivers interesting and engaging lectures. That being said, his midterms and finals are ridiculously hard and go way beyond what he covers in class. You must know the topics and concepts inside out in order to do well. If you care about getting a good grade, try to take this class with another prof.
Having had him for 2 courses, he was "fine"(3.5 out of 5). Although his tests and workload can be unreasonable at times, he was not bad and does teach what needs to be taught and examined and takes his job seriously and professionally. Unlike other professors and instructors at the VSE, he does not quite form the personal connection with students.
He's absolutely hilarious. Yes, work load is a ton and his midterms can be totally impossible, but he does legitimately care. His midterms are a lot about timing, make sure you prepare for that. If you have questions, ASK. He will help, he isn't scary. Not an easy class or prof but he will 100% help you and make you love econ. Would take again!
Chapple doesn't make it easy but develops a fantastic understanding of course material for students. Recommended you take him, especially if you're majoring in economics.
Clive is amazing! I have had him for both 308 and 370, and I would take him again in a heart beat. His classes aren't at all easy (the midterms are tough) but his lectures are great, he gives you notes and he is incredibly structured, organized and easy to follow. He is also hilarious and very sassy.
Chapple is an amazing professor, his testing was quite difficult, but he definitely wanted the best for us and wanted us to pass. I would take this course again, even though I'll definitely have to struggle to get a good grade. Just know, you have to work very hard, but Chapple is good.
Chapple is a pretty good professor, his lectures aren't dry at all. On the contrary, he's quite funny. But he expects too much from a beginner class. His tests are hard and he's a tough grader. Classes were nice but if you're looking for a good grade, Chapple isn't the way to go (unless you've studies Microecon before).
Amazing prof, and probably one of my favourites. His tests and quizzes are tough no doubt, but as long as you work hard you'll be fine! I ended with a 85% in a class with a 65% average, having never taken Econ before. The way he presents the material through engaging lectures offers the perfect introduction for a first year economics class.
amazing professor! highly recommend to take his class!
He is a good lecturer but his exams cover more than what he teaches/what is covered in the textbook. His exams (especially the final) are super long and difficult. The class average was 66. Don't take his class if you want high grades. You will end up spending so many hours studying but still getting a low grade.
Amazing prof. would recommend 100%
lectures are very good, but homework given to prepare for exams isn't adequate. tests are very hard in his class, but iclickers and online assignments help to bring marks up. the average for this class was 65%, which is pretty low.
Prepares great notes for students, comes super ready for class. Clear and logical lectures. Looks strict but is actually really approachable.
Incredible professor. Very difficult, but also very prepared and willing to help. His lectures are great and aplia homeworks really help to solidify the content. His class is very difficult (even graduate students have trouble with his questions) but really comprehensive; he takes a lot of time to ensure we know the material. Great prof.
worst professor in school i have ever had. There was no point of making the course that though. Chapple, however, decided to have two midterms outside his class time that worth only 15 percent each. The midterms were at Friday nights at 7 PM and lasted for 2.5 hours each. If you get a multiple choice wrong, you get a negative mark. ridiculous!
He provides clear and a lot of class material. Textbook, notes, online practice all very helpful. Exams are hard but there are other things graded as well such as clicker questions and the online exercises.
You cannot skip his lectures because of the iclicker questions, but by attending you put yourself at risk of being absolutely roasted by Chapple. He's definitely a tough prof, but he knows the material well
Very hard instructor and you have to be prepared for anything as he examines you on very nuanced details of the economic concepts. I also didn't like the way he teaches by requiring you to use his notes and has a need to lock up many PDF documents he uploads. Like if you want to release it just release it without trolling us through passwords
Best prof in my first year. He gives amazing and interesting lectures, and he has the ability to explain well and clear. Although his exams are hard, if you follow his pace and practice as he told, you will get a fairly good mark. Overall, he is an excellent lecturer, highly recommend.
Out of the BIE program, this instructor was probably the least effective in teaching and also the harshest in terms of work load and exams. This class has a lot of focus on gaming iClickers where learning is no longer the prime concern as evident by the relatively low MCQ averages. There was also a lack of organization in lectures at times.
One of the best profs in the Econ department, Clive is someone who's able to convey his lectures really well. You will have to work hard to get good grades on his exams though, they can be hard. Go to each lecture and you'll be fine. Would take any course if he's the prof.
Worst Economics prof ever. Dont take his class unless u wanna get a 50+ class average on ur midterm:)
hard but fair prof, the class was so worth it
Chapple is the most organized professor I've ever met and there is no question he knows his stuff. If you don't go to class you will 100% fail. He wants the best for students but his exams are very intense and comprehensive. Textbook was a lifesaver. Utilize office hours. Exams mirror the example questions he does during lectures.
Chapple is a fantastic prof for beginner economics. His lectures and notes that he provides are great, and he does a good balance of math and theoretical economics in ECON 101. He does move at an accelerated pace though; if you fall behind you will suffer. His midterms are difficult but not impossible if you put in the work. 10/10 would take again.
Very helpful and kind. Provides with a lot of study material. I really like his lecture notes. He looks and seems scary but is actually very approachable. Office hours are very helpful and productive 10/10 recommend him to anyone.
Clive is hands down the best econ instructor for entry level course. Very organized lecture and notes. Exams are hard but reasonable and straight forward. Recommended.
Hilarious professor. Grading is really harsh. 2 midterms, average was 65% & 55%. No assignments. Iclicker average was 70%. Overall class average was 67%. Go to class because the notes posted are incomplete. Focus on the iclicker Q (the complex ones are usually MC Q). Do the problem sets assigned, as they are the longer questions on exams.
Clive is the best prof I have met at UBC. LOVE HIM!!
Took Econ 101 with Clive. While his exams are hard, I found them helpful to actually develop logical thinking skills and how to use economic concepts in different scenarios. His classes are very well organized and he provides a lot of practice questions through clickers and home assignments that help you do well in the course.
Clive is a really caring and funny professor. His lectures are engaging and he explains the concepts of micro really well. He takes the time out to go with the pace of the class rather than cramming in chapters without properly teaching them. Although he's a great prof, his exams are unbelievably difficult!! Don't take it if you want "easy credits"
I have never take econ in high school before. Yet, he has changed the choice of my future carrier through those amazing lectures. He is amazingly good at explaining economic concepts and makes it memorable through very detail and impressive real-world examples. Despite his test is pretty hard, he does provide tons of materials for you to study with
The course is quite difficult if you're not strong at math, but it may be very easy if you are. Exams are difficult, but he does scale. Thankfully, his class was enjoyable and very applicable to real life. It also followed the textbook well. Unfortunately, not as much material was covered as desired; however, this was his first time.
His class was graded through I-clicker participation, weekly quizzes, midterms and the final exam. I found his course to be the most challenging in my first year at UBC but Clive was a considerate and funny instructor. He brings up examples/images that are relevant. His exams were pretty hard but if you studied properly, you'll be okay.
One of the most challenging classes I've taken at UBC, but I would 100% take it again. Prof. Chapple is great, his lecture notes are super clear and he provides a ton of examples. Exams are pretty tough, but you should be fine if you study properly. The textbook isn't useful overall, except for the few pages he'll specifically ask you to read.
I wasn't even in Dr. Chapple's class but my Econ professor uploaded his lecture videos every week and they were so informative, concise, and articulate. Hopefully I'll have the privilege of enrolling in one of his own classes in the future! Best professor ever!
Weird online system where he wasn't our prof but we watched his lecture videos. Challenging material when learning Econ for the first time, midterm 1 had a failing average. DO THE PRACTICE HOMEWORK, NOT JUST THE MYLAB. Tests are NOT like the MyLab and are much more challenging than the lectures. STUDY THE "OPTIONAL" PRACTICE HW or you'll fail.
He's a great professor, but he is unnecessarily strict. Everyone is going through soooo much during the pandemic, but Prof Clive doesn't care as much/ or at least doesn't show it. Other professors have shown high levels of empathy, kindness, and effort to make this term better for all of us. However, with Prof Clive, my anxiety always shot up.
While expecting a lot from students in giving very strict/specific instructions, he consistently failed to post the asynchronous lectures as scheduled. This was frustrating as the course was entirely recorded. He did not adapt the breakdown of his course for online teaching and it remained exam heavy.
He is one of the best Profs. His lectures are super clear, and I really enjoyed the course. Exams are pretty straight forward as long as you go over his practice questions. He is always willing to help us.
His exams were not easy and were mostly calculations. Likewise, the lecture is not easy. But he will help you get a good grade. Compared to other econ101 classes, this is a very easy class.
Clive is an excellent lecturer, and a good professor - but he is going to be strict. He is going to be tough. Do not expect to go to class, study for an hour, and leave with a high grade. If you mess up on the exams - there is no recovery. If you messed up your midterms? You better do well on the finals, because there are no do-overs or fixes.
Dont take his course!
Do not take his class online! The course is not set up for an online class and he does not post lectures. The weekly TA sessions are useless/rushed and you are left just watching them try to complete the questions. The exams are designed to be tricky and nothing like the homework questions. That is why majority of the class failed the final exam.
Horrible experience. Would not recommend to anyone.
Would say his exams are hard but his lectures provide lots of examples that I think would be beneficial in the future.
I took Econ101 online and it was ok. Prof Chapple had very articulate videos posted every unit and he is nice and reasonable. The only thing is that tests make up almost all of your grade and they are challenging. Over it was fine, I wouldn't choose to take it again but it wasn't the worst.
Chapple is an amazing lecturer who articulates concepts clearly. This course is quite challenging, especially since the lecture videos were asynchronous meaning it's easy to fall behind. But there are many resources to help you out and if you don't wait till the last minute to learn these concepts, you'll do well!
The test's are definitely on the harder side, but if you focus on understanding the content, you should be able to do well. A bit on the authoritative side with so many rules, but is caring overall: definitely scaled the final quite a bit and also increased the weightage of our best mark, along with reducing content. Solid choice overall.
Clive is the best teacher I've had at UBC. He really cares about you actually understanding the material and he tests accordingly. If you do what he says to be a "well-prepared" student you will truly be well-prepared for his exams.
Clive is a knowledgeable professor however, I am not a fan of how he runs his courses. He expects students to put in way more time than what he should for a 3 credit course, nitpicks small and often unimportant details for exam questions, and relies on asynchronus lectures.
Professor Clive is a great professor for ECON315. He is clear in his lectures, provides many materials to practice for exams(problem sets, lab exercises) which are a similar style to the exam. He is also very accessible outside of class, answers almost all the piazza questions that students post, and provides clear lecture notes.
I hate this professor. The grading style is so bad.
Course structure was abysmal for what potentially was the first exposure to economics for many students. ECON 101 was essentially self-taught, and his lectures were so convoluted, filled with jargon that first-year students wouldn't understand. First midterm average was a 49% because assigned readings and HW were so far removed from exam content.
Midterms/Finals have very difficult multiple choice questions but overall lectures are great to follow
Prof. Chapple is the best Econ prof I know. Taking his ECON 101 class. The class suits me perfectly because his content and exams are based on conceptual understanding and mathematics. He is approachable after class and a kind hearted professor in general. That being said, he is also stern when required. I plan to take him again for ECON 301.
Amazing economics prof! Made the material clear and fun to learn. Has a good sense of humour and uses this to make the lectures enjoyable. Lots of practice questions are provided and really helps students understand the material.
Chapel was a very kind and dedicated prof. His lectures were very informative and he always added a great sense of humour to keep things playful. Beware that his multiple choice questions are quite difficult in comparison to the written and usually worth a substantial amount, overall I really enjoyed this class and would recommend him!
Chapple is my best prof yet at UBC. Lectures are extremely engaging and effortlessly funny. His course is not easy but if you study hard, you will be able to learn a lot. Made me insipred to study economics further. Beware, textbook is madatory and you must attend class because he has graded i-clickers.
I love his lectures, so engaging and he explains everything well. Although, I will say that the biggest downside to taking this class is his mid-term/s. The worst part is there are 5 multiple choice questions and each of them are worth 8%, which is terrifying to say the least.
Ok first off he isnt a bad prof by any means he is very accessible outside of class and seems to legitimately care about the course he teachs. Although be ready for some really tough multiple choice questions some of which it seems impossible to study for. Overall if you did really well in econ 101/102 and think you're Hayek reincarnated get ready
Extremely hard class and exams, but very fair. Only tests us on things we've seen in class. Get ready to come to every class or you'll be completely lost next session. The material itself wasn't uninteresting, but the lectures go quick and following them can be difficult. In short, be prepared to work your ass off even just to pass.
Professor Chapple is a great professor who has a genuine passion for economics. His exams are HARD if you have never taken economics. They consist of easier long-answer questions and more difficult multiple-choice questions which focus on concepts and calculations. He does not have his own office hours but responds to emails quickly.
Prof Chapple wants all his students to succeed. He seems unapproachable but is very nice when you talk to him. However, he is extremely strict. Performed poorly on the first midterm and I asked him how to succeed in his exams as they are very difficult. He was very helpful and sent the entire class an email on how to be prepared for his exams.
Lectures are clear and easy to follow, concepts are explained thoroughly with good notes. Exam questions are similar to homework, so studying for the midterms and the final is straightforward. Clive Chapple has a slight British accent which makes the lectures significantly more interesting. Overall, he's a great prof!
Incredible lecturer, very engaging, and very fair tests. He explains things very clearly.
Amazing Prof. Challenging exams. Pretty funny.
Amazing teacher. In the beginning, he was scary and put me off consultation sessions. Ensure you're on top of your iClickers and assignments since he values effort and participation greatly and isn't too harsh if you mess up on exams. He gives "easier" long answer Qs, but "harder" MCQs in exams compared to others. Be ready to study very hard!
Chapple is a great prof with a clear interest in his students and the course itself! He welcomed questions and provided a refreshing amount of support with regards to study guidance. His midterms and finals can be difficult to do well on because of the heavily weighted multiple choice questions that are quite convoluted and difficult to study for.
Chapple is an amazing professor. He has extremely structered, engaging and hilarious lectures as well as organized lecture notes which makes it very easy to learn from him. Midterms are definitely tricky as 1 multiple choice was worth 7.5% of the entire midterm but are doable with the practice he gives.
This class was definitely not the easiest course I took in my first year but Professor Chapple made it way easier to understand the concepts of basic microeconomics than I expected. I got 85% on my midterm 1 but slacked on the second so that brought my grade down, but it is definitely possible to get a good grade in Clive's class if you put effort.
Prof Chapple is an incredible lecturer. His lectures are easy to follow and pay attention to for the whole class. His tests can be a little harsh but he provides plenty of practice problems to help you learn the concepts that are just as difficult. You will remember whatever he teaches and any following courses will be very easy to understand.
Wonderful teacher, clear lecture, before take this class, I have heard that his test is very difficult, a little afraid for the test lol. But actually the test is not that hard.
I did awful on the first midterm. Then I learned how to study for Chapple's exams, and I got nearly 100% on the second midterm. Mylab questions should be completed when assigned, but aren't important whilst studying. Focus on class notes, iclickers, and tutorial questions. Chapple has some of the clearest most informative notes - take advantage
Clive is a nice guy, he seems strict and mean during lecture but is helpful and cares about his students. iClickers for every class but are easy to follow. His exams are brutal tho, especially because the multiple choice is so tricky.
very hard final exam, he seem not want us to pass, don't choose this teacher, the exam are so hard!!!
Midterms and finals are so easy in this class if you bothered to read over his examples (show up) and do all his practice problems to know when to use what. Multiple choice was a bit hard and requires you to remind some of the harder stuff in class but he went over it in class anyways. Fast response times outside of class if you need his help.
By far the best ECON professor at UBC, but really difficult exams. His lectures are engaging and give you a solid understanding of the material. Short answers are easier on exams, but multiple choice focuses on harder material and is worth much more. I would have done much better in his course if all questions were weighted evenly. I learned a lot!
Amazing lectures and really organized notes. Though grades tough, the average for first midterm is 48.8. You could definitely learn something from his course!
clive is the goat. exams are tough. he's fun and easy to understand in lectures. you will have to read the textbook as some parts are examinable but self-study. canvas is organized and he publishes weekly tasks so its easy to organize your econ 101 coursework. attendance for clicker. pay attention to clickers and lecture examples for midterm
He is a very grumpy prof and seems like he does not want us. The midterm average was 49%.
By far one of the best 101 profs at UBC. Clear grading criteria and flexible weightage to assignments to account for a one-off bad performance. Pay attention in class, ask questions and keep up with weekly assignments and readings, or you'll have much to catch up with.
Dr. Chapple is passionate about economics and teaching. He takes his time moving through material to ensure students understand. He uses iClicker in his classes to grade both participation and correctness, so it is important to attend lectures. The course is very test-heavy. Overall, I would recommend taking his class, as I learned a lot from him.
Great professor. He's invested in teaching good at explaining abstract concepts and provides real-world examples to facilitate understanding. He can be quite strict, calling out people being on their phones and such, but that also establishes a good teaching environment where students actually pay attention.
Great prof who has a sense of humour and is extremely competent with the subject. He does not read from his slides or notes whatsoever keeping us engaged the entire lecture. I genuinely enjoy going to his lectures. Make sure to review his notes and iclickr questions for the exams!
Professor Chapple is a passionate and well-educated professor in the field of economics but he is stern, also his class is difficult and you need to work hard to do well. My biggest piece of advice would be to pre-read the chapter before going to the lectures. Econ 101 can be unintuitive and Clive definitely puts you on the spot, so be prepared!
- Amazing Prof - Explains course concepts super clearly + gives lots of real-world examples - Takes lots of time on each topic :) - Great lecture notes - In-class clickers help with understanding - Prof wants students to do well, curving grades if necessary - Super passionate about economics - Super hard exams and limited time to write exams
Funny and very informative lectures. Midterms were filled with trick questions!
He overall explains things well but the midterms and final were so hard, grading criteria isn't that clear and the multiple choice questions are super tricky. He's well respected and piazza is a life saver. Grade is split between achieve homework, iclickers, and tests. Well organized canvas and probably one of the better 101 profs tbh.
I feel like giant lectures are really difficult to focus in and actually get content out of, but Clive did a really good job of making class engaging and interesting. He's a nice professor and you can tell he has passion for econ and wants his students to do well. The 15/25 --> 10/30 was actually so amazing. We love Clive!
He is very strict on not allowing students to use laptops. Tablet or printed notes only! He may seem a little intimidating at first but he genuinely wanted our class to succeed and changed the weights of the MT's to give everyone a boost + also made MT2 easier because MT1 was failing avg lol. If you miss class, make sure to still do the iClickers!
Professor Chapple gives detailed lectures lasting the whole 50 minutes every class. He is not accessible outside of class, but TAs are. His lectures were good and he is a likable professor, but he makes exams pretty difficult. The final was scary but he scaled it as I got a much higher final grade than expected. I would recommend him over gateman.
Excellent lecturer but exams are hell. For reference I took this course at the same time as Math 200 and somehow found that easier lol. My suggestion would be to rewatch the lectures after class and make your own notes on the material as there's no way to get by without really understanding the concepts he mentions in lecture. He does scale though!
Clive is a hit or miss, if you go to his office hours he is pretty nice. However, in class he is quite hostile and the lectures are pretty brain-numbing. The exams are also 50/50, the multiple choices will completely demolish your mark but the written portion is quite straightforward.
Easily one of the best professors I have had at UBC so far. His lectures are very straightforward and all the content is explained quite well. I knew what to expect for both midterms and final in regards to content and structure. His expectations are very clear and he overall made a course that can be seen as dry very interesting.
I loved econ 101 with Clive. For midterms never prepare the last day (you need at least 3 days) and to learn all the iClickers by heart. He did often put variations of iClickers question in the exams. He's an amazing lecturer and you should go to all of his classes. Follow his prep instructions for exams and learn the calculations and notes well.
Professor chapple is amazing!
Very enthusiastic prof, and gives clear guidelines and expectations.
His exams were hard. I passed the first midterm by a bit (exam avg 48%) but worked very hard and scored 90+ on the second. So, be prepared for tons of dedication. I also found the final awful...but managed to get an A overall. In terms of learning though, Prof Chapple is an amazing lecturer, knowledgeable about economics.
Prof Chapple is a super dedicated professor. His clickers are helpful for midterm prep as well as everything he says during lectures. Keep up with revision and what's learned in lectures, ensure you understand the material and ask him questions and I'm positive you will be happy with your mark. 10/10 would recommend. Wish he taught 102!
Great professor. Very engaging lectures, goes over content completely to allow you to master each concept. I suggest going to class much as possible. I stopped going and fell behind very quickly. Exams had questions different than homework, so try to find different sources for preparation. Exams are really tough in general.
When I took this course, I vividly remember reading the reviews here repeatedly to understand whether the course would be difficult. In reality, all this course really requires is a strong conceptual understanding of the material. Attend lectures, take thorough notes, ask insightful questions, and you'll find yourself breezing through every test.
Lectures were engaging and interesting with relevant real life scenarios to help with understanding. Expectations of the class were clearly set, required information was easily found, and we were kept up to date with everything we needed to know. Grading was fair, and midterm weightings were adjusted when the class average was lower than expected.
Clive is a great professor. His exams may be difficult, but his classes are clear and informative. He tells you exactly what to study for, and the iClickers are excellent examples for the questions. He was slightly intimidating at the beginning of the term but warmed up throughout the course. I learned a lot from him and loved his teaching methods.
Clive is a good prof. I learn things in his class, and I'll give him that. He feels the need to add random overcomplicated questions to his exams and as a result, our class average has just continuously been very low. He knows we have struggled but still chose to make the final exam very hard, I just don't get it. He's not as good as some say.
I've never had a dull moment in Professor Chapple's class, I found his lecture style and its contents to be very engaging. In addition, he provides you with all the tools you need to succeed. Although demanding, if you focus in class, attempt the iclickers, do all the practice materials, and go to office hours, you're guaranteed to succeed.
Tough exams but you'll learn a lot. Also, love his British humour, 10/10.
Clive is a gem! His lectures are great- very clear and he uses though-provoking iclicker questions to help supplement the learning. His exams tend to be tricky so be prepared to put in the studying work.
Explains really well and is engaging! Exams are difficult but he accommodates well if the class struggles. MC in exams are hard.IClickers are good for understanding and prepare well for exam questions.Textbook is helpful, read before class. Should be everybody's go-to econ101 prof.Provides lecture notes, so you can really focus on what he's saying
I loved Clive! He was so organized and wanted each of his students to succeed. My favourite prof this term!
The exams are tough, but if you study a lot, and do all the practice questions, it will be ok. Definitely show up to all the lectures, and take notes on what he says. The exams are very fair, and you will be ok!
He is a great prof, I absolutely loved taking this class and one of the key reasons was he made it so interesting and I actually understood what we were learning because he used examples and was very clear. For exams, he made sure to tell us how exactly we should prepare, like literally giving us a list of things. If you study hard you'll do great!
ON GOD Clive is the goat. I am taking Econ 102 right now and I already miss Clive. He is a though marker, but makes his class very informative and entertaining. His Canvas layout is so clear, and even have PDFs made for students to clearly show which content should be studied on the textbooks.
Prof. Chapple provides very detailed notes that you can print or use an iPad to annotate. iClickers for participation and accuracy in lectures. Overall, exams were challenging but if you listen to his studying suggestions it is possible to do well.
best Econ 101 prof, if you have the chance to take him, take him. super organized, and everything was laid out very well. His lectures are sometimes boring(my fault) but very informative. I wish he teaches 102
Amazing prof !! His notes deepen what we learn in the textbook in a very interesting manner. The lectures are engaging and he prepares us well for exams and tries his best for his students.
Great prof, awesome lectures, and great sense of British-humour! Very well-organized, strict about his guidelines, but wants to see his students do well. Exams were challenging, so start studying earlier in the semester! Overall, good experience. Learned a lot.
Marina Adshade for 102 is not as good. Clive the goat.
clive is actually the goat, i enjoyed his class and his humour. the first midterm gave everyone whiplash but he was great at scaling the weights of each midterm and seemed to really care about his students!
Clive is extremely good at lecturing. His iclicker questions are relevant, he provides very detailed notes on topics, very good examples and explanations and goes through difficult questions in class (which really helped me on the exams). Taking ECON 303 with a different professor now: I really miss having Clive as my prof.
W clive
I did really bad on the first midterm, but understood that he really likes to put iclicker questions in his exams. Learn the lecture notes by heart, practice all the iclickers to make sure you understand, you'll do great on the exams. I also read all of the textbook that really helped.
Read the textbook and go to class, you'll find economics really interesting. Take advantage of Professor Chapple's lecture notes. One of the most organized notes I've ever seen. The best professor for my first year.
His lectures are very engaging and he explains the concepts very well. His grading is very fair and the exams are based on material he covered
Clive comes off strict, but he can tell which students care and which don't. Don't be afraid to talk to him. Reading the textbook helps with the concepts! Study the heck out of the iClickers and lecture notes for midterms. The final is sorta that + prayers lol. Overall, he's the best Econ prof you'll find. P.S. His accent makes everything better
I LOVE HIM
I feel that he is a very rude and impatient person. The IC problems in his class are always difficult, and he gives us very little time to complete them. The entire class performed poorly on Quiz 1, and he made sarcastic and harsh comments about it
I loved this course and despite the meh grade it was so engaging and I felt like I learned a lot. The examples given are always on point, lectures are engaging and he even entertains the occasional question. Getting that B- was more rewarding than my A in poli sci. 11/10 would absolutely take again.
Really good. If you do all the optional EOC you will be fine. The tests are hard, but fair.
not nice at all but clearly experienced and I liked his lectures but the midterm average was a 43. lots of iclickers
The LITERAL GOAT.
Chapple is a good prof overall. His lessons are funny but sometimes he takes too much time talking about a topic. So we often slow behind compared to other econ 101 classes :) His exams are brutal although you may think it is easy. Study well his clickers and you will be just fine in his class.
Has one of the best lectures so attending them will help you alot of tests. He explain concepts super in depth and clear, has his own notes for you to annotate. Midterms and Finals can have a few tricky questions and requires extra thinking but overall super doable.
He was my favourite professor! Greatly recommend him. He's very passionate about teaching and caring for his students. I used to ask him questions after class and he always answered them patiently until I understood the material even if he had a meeting afterwards.
Clive Chapple strategically implements devious questions on the midterm that will brutally molest you and crush your dreams of ever getting anything above a 90.
Records lectures, coherent instruction that goes very well with the lecture notes he provides. Great examples that illustrate concepts well too.
Dr. Clive is a very knowledgeable professor who places emphasis on respect and hard work. Come to his lectures on time and complete the clickers, readings, and homework. Tests (especially the multiple choice section) are meant to be challenging, so make sure you know the concepts well. Loved the detail in his notes and his humor; is always helpful.
He is definitely the best prof. Teaches well and is a fun guy. Love him so much and he is def the reason I wanna have econ;;
Amazing and engaging lectures. Homework on the weekends for Achieve but are not too hard if payed attention in class. Very clear explanations and examples. Funny guy too. 10/10 recommend!
I love this man!! Clive is the best. Study the clicker questions before exams, and you will do just fine. The exams are easier than people say. You just have to be extra careful when reading questions, attend the lectures, and do the readings. His accent makes everything he says sound meaningful and engaging
Clive teaches concepts well and in a clear manner. His homework is not too difficult and his midterms were challenging but okay as long as you study. The clicker questions help a lot with getting a good grade in the course.
Clive is an incredibly skilled lecturer and is a kind and caring prof. Though he may seem strict to some, he really is just a chill guy.
i love his british accent. He is funny and cute! (zaddy)
Oh wow. Final was traumatizing. Sending thoughts and prayers to everybody who suffered that. But Clive is great nonetheless. 🙏
Honestly, Clive is a solid prof who explains most concepts in pretty good detail, Alongside his good personality and humor, it's a good class. However, it is tricky, the final is comprehensive and if you are not putting in decent hours learning the course content you will struggle greatly. Midterms are also not easy per say, stay focused.
Everyone I know was like dying after yesterday's final, including me. I still love him since he really gives us amazing lectures. BUT AHHHHHHH
Clives final just pulled down my pants are brutally assaulted me. Great prof though. 10/10.
It's a hard class but if you got him as the professor for 101 consider yourself lucky and make sure you don't miss classes. He gives some really good real life examples which reinforces learning of a new material.
Material Clive covers his in his lectures are easy to follow along and enjoyable to listen to, notes he provides are simple. Midterms were similar to practice homeworks but had some challenging questions. Finals were a step up. A through review of the notes, redoing in class questions and online homework's should be solid prep though.
Clive's lectures are easy to follow and he explains concepts very well. The iClickers and homework questions are great practice for midterms and finals. The final was more challenging than expected but if you follow along and understand everything as the class goes on you will do great.
Clive is such a wonderful human and instructor. Econ 101 is a tough class but Clive made it very enjoyable, especially with his accent. Go to lectures, attend discussions, and study the heck out of all the iclickers and you'll be awesome
Extremely organized lecture notes & engaging lectures. Use Piazza to get fast, helpful responses to questions instead of going to office hours. Textbook readings actually help (expect about 2 hrs a chapter though). Clive explicitly states what to study for exams, but you will need a deep understanding of every chapter, especially for the final.
He's one of the best profs I've had for economics, I like his humor and he explains things clearly. The class notes that he provided are also super well organized.
We as a collective love Dr. Chapple, his class is so organized but he's such a funny guy. Get the textbook, his lectures are really good but it's nice to have it explained in another way.
Awesome lectures and prof! -> has a great sense of humour and is great at explaining even the toughest of concepts. He also always stays to answer your questions after lecture as long as possible which is very helpful. Exams were tough but fair -> to do well, redo the clickers, achieve homework, and watch mr. Clifford on YouTube when stuck.
Clive is a really great professor that has his own sense of humor and teaches in a clear and simple way. His lectures are easy to follow, and he explains things so well that it's easy to understand and back it up with examples. The midterms aren't too bad as long as u redo all the Iclicker, homework and EOC questions.
Prof Clive is the best prof ever!! As a first year student, he made econ very enjoyable and understandable! Def have to work hard but he makes you really want to learn it well! :)
Clive is an amazing professor as he always gave amazing lectures throughout the course. He can clearly describe all the microeconomic concepts clearly and in an understandable way. In ECON 101 the style of teaching is a large lecture with 500 people. He doesn't accept any laptops open in his lecture, but notes taking on iPAD is permitted.
He really wants you to understand and does everything he can to make the course doable. It's still pretty difficult if you've never done economics before.
Clive does a great job of breaking down economic concepts using real life examples. Although his midterms aren't necessarily easy, the questions do resemble his iClickers. He also has his own set of notes you can annotate, which I find helpful. A very decent prof, although he can come across a little intimidating.
Easily one of my favourite professors, Clive is very knowledgeable about the topic and delves deep into it. Topics are presented very clearly and lectures are engaging and entertaining for their entirety. The midterms are difficult however if you stay engaged with Clive's excellent lecture notes, pay attention, and read the textbook you'll do fine.
Clive is a fantastic prof. Really enjoyed his lectures and how he provided relevant examples to showcase his points. His midterms and final were tough but his lecture notes are very easy to follow along with to be successful in the course.
At first, I was super intimidated by Clive, but he turned out to be one of my favorite profs, funny and caring. His notes he provides you are thorough and easy to follow. In his lectures, he always makes sure his students understand the material before moving on, explaining everything thoroughly. I'll miss having lectures with him!
He is a great professor will take again
I loved being his student, he has a great presence during his lectures and is super engaging. He makes it easy for students to understand the material. Read the textbook and pay attention during his lecture, then you will pass his class, he's not trying to screw you over. 80% of grade was the exams.
No one can explain concepts and their connections as CLEARLY as Clive can. He gets straight to the point- a phenomenal lecturer. Not to mention he has a good sense of humour which you'll notice once the class begins. Expect to learn a lot (calculations and theory); his class/grading is not hard if you listen to what he teaches and do the homework.
Clive is an extremely organized and well spoken prof. His lectures are well designed and engaging. Midterms are easier than the final and the multiple choice questions are designed to be quite difficult. Not an easy course by any means but he does a great job teaching it.
Amazing prof, great lectures and is very clear on what parts of the textbook you should study. Go to his lectures because there are some tricks and content he covers there that isn't covered in the textbook. Course was tough, but listen well and study hard, you'll get results (multiple choice section of exams are hell though, dont get discouraged
Clive has a very great way of teaching, he goes over relevant examples and always does a quick review of the previous class before jumping into new material! Hos exams and tests are tricky so get ready to read and understand the concepts thoroughly. I'd recommend attending hos lectures as he simplifies concepts more than what is in the textbook!
Clive has excellent organized lecture notes and teaching with well spoken. He always gives iclicker questions to test if we understand the concepts or not and provides detailed explanations and step by step solutions. The test might be hard grading, but he will curve eventually.
Clive was an outstanding professor whose anecdotes in lecture always helped me tremendously when studying and completing coursework, as well as examinations. On midterms, the toughest part was really the time constraint rather than the actual content -- however, many found the MC parts challenging as opposed to the short answer.
Prof Chapple is organized and makes econ easy to understand. hes relatively lenient, esp with midterm weight. Ipad is highly recommended in this course, he doesnt allow laptops. make sure to join iclickers, he uses them frequently, also weekly homework. Overall, clear cut instructions and good practice problems, he's a very fair professor imo
I MISS CLIVE!!!!!!!!
Chapple is SUCH a great professor. His canvas layout is the most organized of the professors I've had which goes a long way. His lectures are recorded so you can review them if you're struggling. His use of iclickers as practice problems is extremely helpful. Highly recommend you take his course as opposed to any other econ prof.
Very organised class layout. Great professor and very funny. His MCQs are definitely the more challenging part of the exam, so be sure to review iclickers!! Achieve is great when it comes to homeworks and EOCs.
i wish every prof was a little more like clive
Clive is the best professor I have had so far. He's so organized. The canvas page was so easy to navigate and his lectures notes are goated, they make it so easy to understand the material. His tests are hard, but only if you don't use everything that he's given you to your advantage. Use his notes and Piazza and you'll do great. Clive=goat
The GOAAATTT
Clive Chapple, THE BEST ECONOMIC PROFESSOR EVER!!!! Choose his class, I like his style, humorous and easy grading, exam not too hard. Iclicker existing buy if you pay descent effort, it will be good grades!!! Clive Chapple is THE GOAT!
Really great lectures.
Listening to his lectures are like watching a David Attenborough nature documentary. 1 hour feels like 10 minutes
Classes are entertaining and make complicated concepts simple. Clickers are similar to exam material, and you are never surprised by what you see on the exam. Homework is great for understanding the material. The only problem is that the external textbook is full of errors and lazily put together.
GOOD lecturer. However, his exams are brutal. The problems seem easy but are really tricky and hard to get them right. Not a good experience overall. Think twice before taking this.
Amazing professor. You will learn an incredible amount! The exams are tough (short answer problems usually straightforward - but the multiple choice questions are very difficult). My favourite class at UBC.
Pros: Hes Funny. Grading guidelines are very fair, he makes your better midterm worth more. Prep wasn't too hard. Cons: Final was just not fair at all. Do good on his first midterm or else its an uphill battle. He seems mad all the time. DONT PULL OUT YOUR PHONE or COMPUTER (or hide it)
He's actually really funny and kinda sounds like Jude Law. His lecture notes are so useful for studying for exams. If you understand the lecture notes and pay attention in class you'll find the exams pretty fair.
Clive is the GOAT. He has a good sense of humour and has very engaging lectures.
Chapple is one of my fav profs. He is very funny during lectures and seems like he genuinely wants to be there. His notes are awesome. Midterms are fair but the final is a bit challenging. Keep up with the textbook readings and study the iClickers.
Clive is one of my favourite profs at UBC. You can tell that he is really passionate about teaching. I love how his lectures are engaging, which helps me stay focused.
Incredible lecturer, explains concepts exceptionally well, homework is not too much and what is testable material is made explicitly clear. Testing is difficult but fair, and class is fun to attend!
Great guy, real catch.
Clive is easily one of the best professors I've had, very knowledgeable about the topic and extremely clear lectures. His midterms are definitely challenging with pretty low averages but overall, if you go to class or at least watch the lectures, which he posts online, you can do well and learn a lot!
Tests were hard but his lectures are amazing
Undoubtably the best prof I have ever had. Explained concepts well, related them to content in a relatable way, and testing was very difficult, but fair. Confidently saying this as have taken economics at UofT and this is by far the best of on the east or west coast.
The finals this guy be giving out.... Really good professor tho, his final is just notoriously hard. Midterms are fair, iClicker is fair, and discussion is optional.
Absolutely incredible prof, all his lectures were incredibly engaging and he gave many opportunities to show your learning. Even though the midterms and final were challenging, questions were similar on the to the discussion questions handed out, and his grading policy on midterms meant your better grade was weighted better. Absolute goat.
Very tough exams and final but a great teacher and a fair marker
