Professor McCurdy is a very intellegent man, but he doesn't convey the material well to students. He jumps from topic to topic and explains things expecting that you understand all of the things that he "won't teach becuase [we] should know it".
Try to avoid this teacher. He really knows his chemistry but he can't teach it. There are numerous times where he would make mistakes and the students would have to correct him. Even after passing the AP Chem test I would get confused with the simplest things he teaches.
I used to think I understood Chem before I started taking this class. He explains everything so poorly, that I get more confuddled than ever before. He is also unintersting, and does examples that he makes up (aka examples that don't matter). Hopefully he'll retire/expire soon.
Chemistry just isn't the same anymore with Prof. McCurdy. He speaks much too fast during lectures making it almost impossible to take clear and helpful notes. Either you're listening to him, or taking down notes...not a very effective way to learn. The Midterm makes the BAR look easy.
This guy's weak sauce
You're all wrong! This professor gives out great lectures and his tests are easy. Highly recommended preofessor!
No. You're wrong. This is absolutely one of the worst teachers i have had. Yea he knows his stuff but if he fails to pass it on to his students...he shouldn't be teaching at all. Just dont take it. I HIGHLY recommend everyone not to take him. I honestly wish i had another teacher.
He seemed cool because he had a good humor. Too bad that was it. It's easy to tell that he is an intelligent person, but he can't convey and teach in lecture. Confusing! He is so fast and assumes you know everything. I'm glad that 1 quarter of CHEM is all I need because he makes me hate the subject.
tests suck...nothing like hw or lecture problems
way lame... don't take his class, he bows hard. he is ridiculously confusing and unfocused in lecture, jumping randomly from topic to topic. he tends to spend half a lecture going over an example that is not helpful.
McCurdy is a nice guy, and he tries to be funny to loosen up the class, but his examples are confusing and he skips over steps he expects us to know. Do the hw problems, and study for the tests. His class is as difficult as any other chem class, but not fun at all. I hear Enderle is fantastic.
Haha evenghough I have to study for chem now, but I got so tired. Anyway it's so funny how people say about him. I think he's ok, he made chem sounds very interesting. Take his class, I think he gives out very useful tips on how study in any chem class.
avoid this prof. scribbles on the chalkboard while muttering about some equation. i never understand what he talks about in lectures.
Well he is not very clear, but when it comes to the tests, at least on teh 1 test ive had, he uses examples straight out of the homework. 1 Problem was identicle to a problem that i did 5 minutes before the test, and the answers were still in my calculator (lucky me) but if you have him, dont expect
Jeez..this guy cant teach..all he does is talking about formulas no one understands..especially for non-AP chem takers..i ditch his class twice a week! ^^ DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
This professor cannot teach. I and my friends were confused after the lecture. We rather study together. For someone who had not take ap chem, i suggest don't take his class. If you see him on the first day of school, leave the lecture hall.
WORST TEACHER EVER!!! I just go to Enderle's lectures. I guess not such a bad class because I've heard other tests are harder, but go to different lectures because you're not going to learn anything from him. All he does is tell you how to derive the equations (WHICH IS NOT ON THE TEST!!)
Instead of wasting your time listening to this ****'s lectures, just read the textbook on your own. Its much easier. If you can't do it on your own, ask for help, but not from Mccurdy
His lectures are so confusing.
ok...all of the above is mostly untrue, people who took chem 2A in HS don't know how to study in college, they think it is easy. Read the book before lecture and then actually GO to lecture, it seems like a breeze to me. "Work problems!" - McCurdy
Whatever, just because you find the class easy doesn't mean he is a good teacher. I find chem to be easy but the lectures are just horrible
Someone gave McCurdy a good reading. This person doesn't understand what it means to rate a professor. If you compare McCurdy to Enderle, there is nothing more to say. You cannot learn from McCurdy without prior knowledge. And you can learn from Enderle without prior knowledge.
I have nothing to say but NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!
This professor is horrible at lecturing. He explains stuff, goes on and on, but does not care whether the students understand or not. Reading the book and taking notes on your own is more worthwhile. Tests are about average/hard depending on whether you work assigned hw or not.
This guy is so disorganized and tends to go off tangent during lectures. He discuss in details [unecessasily] on the topics he likes (such as hyrogen and its orbitals) while breezing through other things. Generally, he's one of those professors who talk and the students sit there and go "huh??"
Theoretical Professor, teaches beyond what is necessary
just one sentence: if i did not pay for the class, I would not even have attended the lectures.
actually I think McCurdy is very interesting. sometimes i get lost in lecture, but thats mainly because i didn't read. but when i did read ahead then i hella understood everything he was talking about. he's really not that bad. but not the best either.
he is soooo boring, though he's good looking for his age. some times sounds interestig, but don't think about learning from lectures, read the books.. make sure you have a good ta
he tries to be very helpful. I thought it was tough to understand lectures even when I read the book. He is just out there in his own chemistry world.
Goddamn this guy cannot teach. Take it with another professor don't waste your grade or your time.
He is so hard to understand. His lectures don't make sense even when I do the reading. His midterms are hard. He doesn't tell you what the curve is at all so you don't know how you're doing. Its obvious he's intelligent and knows what he's talking about but he's a terrible professor.
I hate this class... Its so boring and he makes the material so much harder than it really is. He goes off on tangents about complicated material we don't need to know. He doesnt explain anything... I hate him
his lectures are hard to understand. midterms are pretty fair, not too hard. If you read the book you'll do fine. final was really easy.
Lectures confused me, McCurdy is too smart for frosh. Needs to work on his speaking skills too. Nice guy though, finished the final in 50 min, got an A. Good stuff.
This guy is horrible, he does a lot of babbling about stuff and is very confusing to understand, even if you've already read the book! Sometimes he even goes off into other concepts not in the book just to confuse you further...he seems smart but is not very good at teaching in general.
This professor is the worst of the bunch. He doesn't let you know what the curve is, so you have no idea how you're doing in his class. And when your final grade comes out, the curve is less than 7%! When you compare this to other professors' enormous curves (10-15%), McCurdy is not fair. STAY AWAY!
his lectures were hard and his tests were pretty hard too. but he was a very interesting professor and he was always willing to help you during office hours if you come with good questions.
he was super lame and caused me much pain, makes everything more complicated than it has to be, and just goes too much into the history, theory guy in chemistry, doesnt know how to teach
He knows his stuff, but he confuses students very easily and they get very frustrated. If you're really into Chem this might be your guy, but for the most part he's utterly insane and should be avoided at all costs.
He is a really challenging teacher. He's brilliant, you can tell that, but he likes to overcomplicate things in his lectures, and he just scribbles on the blackboard and its easy to get lost. He was one of the hardest chem2a teachers, and there was barely a curve. He's hard, you better like chem
He's so hard. When he teaches, he always explains the unuseful, unimportant material that we don't need to know. No equation list on midterms or the final. His curve sucks like hell! (p.s. He doesn't even know how to draw a cube!)
I think McCurdy actually deters my chemistry learning. His lectures are very unclear-- he skips around on the board and goes off on weird tangents about nothing at all. The midterms were absolutely horrid with unexpected material, but the final was pretty decent.
Highly NOT recommend!!!!!!!Keep yourself away from his class at all cost!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought the class was pretty easy. He doesn't curve until the end so you really don't know what you're going to get until the very end which sucks. His midterms were fair and the final was extremely easy
very smug prof. lectures using the blackboard so show up in time to get a seat in reasonable view of it otherwise you'll be lost, but you'll probably be lost anyway. moves at a very fast pace. his lectures make sense if you do problems from the book to keep up.
the lectures were pointless. i stopped going after the first midterm. the final was way easier than the two midterms. he curves at the end of the quarter so its hard to know how you're doing. the lectures are boring and he talks into he board.
He's coo but sometimes he goes off on tangents and it sounds like you might as well be takin chinese. But his tests are fair.
Teacher goes off topic all the time. Lectures about stuff that will not be on midterm. Does not teach you how to solve problems, only go over concept.
He now uses the overhead as opposed to the blackboard and is clear when describing problems and concepts covered on the exam. He also makes class at least semi-fun, and he uses a microphone...Very easy to understand!!
i find his class to be very fair, goes over concepts very well, but its up to the students to work out text book problems to fully grasp the concepts.
This teacher is a total jerk..he goes off topic all the time and its pointless going to his lectures...he's a fruitcake...ahhhha...he makes me mad..his midterms are way harder than his practices midterms..
Despite what everyone ha said, I found McCurdy to be an okay teacher. His new overhead method works quite well, but he tends to over-complicate sample problems... He stutters a lot, and sometimes goes on slight tangents (JJ Thomson's son anyone?. His first midterm is average in term of difficulty, and no hw is required for this class.
Read the chapter before you go to lecture if you don't have a strong history of chemistry. If you know chemistry, try not to get too airheaded because his midterms will most definintely trick you, so study. His tests are difficult, which calls for an awesome curve. His lectures are intense and mostly go over your head, but overall he is not bad.
Ok, I really don't understand why everyone dislikes this prof. He is interested in the subject and presents it as such. The midterms were increadably easy, take him if you can.
I thought this teacher was a bad lecturer.he strayed off topic alot and was difficult ot follow, but his tests were very easy. his final was extremely like his practice final and very helpful
Before taking this class, everyone warned me that he was a horrible professor. However, I didn't think he was that bad. He tried to be funny in class, and he did make simple mistakes. Overall, I thought he was a good teacher. Although he says the only way you can do well in class is if you do homework and read the book, it's not true.
i feel sorry for those who are taking him for chem. he is the hardest chem professor out there. he solved the problems using his own methods and rules. he will confuse the f*** out of you even though you understood the material initially. for his class just read the book, do some problems and go over the practice midterms. might help/might not!
a man obsessed with the motion the surface of a drum undergoes when hitting it. (you'll know what I'm talking about when he heads to Ch 9-standing waves/wave functions)practice tests are a little bit helpful, go to discussion, go to tutoring, okay to skip lecture, and good luck everyone.
he was awesome!!!!!
Clear lectures, but tends to go far too deep into the subject for the class (actually spent two lectures mathematically deriving the equations for the shapes of the different orbitals). Clearly very smart and knowledgable in chemistry, but makes the class more complicated than necessary.
A very insightful man, lectures were straightforward, definitely knows what hes talking about. helpful in office hours, and shared some very important pieces of knowledge with me.
he's not a good lecturer.. he yap all hour and he base a lot on concept.. he doesn't do any solving problem.. but overall the tests were easy.. well the first one was kind of hard, but second midterm n final was pretty easy if u study.
I enjoyed his class a lot. Sometimes he goes a little fast in his lectures, but he's clearly a brilliant man. He really got me interested in chem, something i didn't think was possible.
Very smart professor. In order to understand him, one must be strong in chem background however. Otherwise, he's willing to help anyone just go talk to him!
McCurdy is a very knowledgeable guy. His class is not easy, but it is definitely a good base of preparation for further classes. He lectures rather rapidly at times, but if you do your reading and such, you'll be fine. I would look forward to having him as a professor again.
He is a good professor, go to lectures.
Not bad of a lecturer. read the section he's going to be lecturing on before the lecture, helps lots.
very knowledgable. talks too fast, doesn't give enough time to copy down lecture notes. lecture can be very confusing without strong chemistry background. tests are very fair. if you do the homework and the practice exams, you should be fine.
If you don't have to DO NOT TAKE MCCURDY. He is very condescending and his lectures are absolutely useless unless you have a strong chem background. The class wasn't too hard and you can do okay in it but I found it very distressing that I had to teach myself all of the material. And the head TA, Austin something, is a tool.
do not take him. no matter what. he goes off on tangents, doesnt make anything clear, and expects students to know too much stuff. his tests are reasonable, but are hard if u just listen to his lectures. lectures would make me more confused, better off reading the book. definately not a good lecturer, but is knowledgeable. take enderle or ng
this teacher is definitely NOT recommended! He's an OKAY lecturer, but he rambles on and on about nonsense so i stopped going to lectures. He has NO TYPE OF GENEROUS CURVE! if he does curve, it's only like 2%.. DONT TAKE HIM!
The good pasts it that he speaks english, is intelegent, anddoesnt rely on the book. The Bad is that he says 10 to 15% of the class get an A and its a demanding class and he doesnt allow you to know the curve or what is needed for an A. Also he can talk fast.
Easiest 2a. Really good lectures if you just listen and if you read before hand.
This was a very tough class. The lectures came fast and hard, and if you didn't read the text before hand, they went well over your head. The midterm and finals were predictable if you did all the readings and the questions assigned. Professor McCurdy can go off on tangents at times, but these are only tested on in a simple fashion.
To pass: 1--read/skim the material before LEC__2--take the practice exams__3--attend LEC__4--take notes__5--study before an exam____Note: speaks rather fast, so bring a voice recorder of some sort. Sometimes forgets to put previous slide on 2nd projector. When that happens, just shout out--he'll put it up. I failed b/c I had overloaded on classes.
His test were pretty easy the first midterm was decent if you listened to him in lecture! Take advantage of all tutoring LSC, SACC, anywhere just take advantage of tutoring and you'll do just fine! Workshops with Jim Hollister will help a lot also
His class isn't hard if you read the book, mostly everything comes out of the book. Go to the workshops, that will help a lot. His first mid term was the hardest, but his second mid term and the final are really easy if you read the book. He goes very fast in lecutre, taking notes could be hard. But listen carefully instead of writing down everythi
The thing about Mccurdy is this: his tests are easy, but so easy to the point where EVERYONE(like 90% of the class) scores above a 70. This means low standard deviation and thus very low curve. He curves only by 2-5% while other professors are boasting 10-20% curves. This guy can't teach for **** either. GL ROFL.
i got an 92% and that was an A+ i thought i would get just an A. test are prety easy. the final was much easier out all the other midterms.
If you have the chance to get a better professor, do it! He is incredibly boring, and expects you to know more than you really need to which makes it more confused and complicated than it needs to be.
I had a crappy TA!
The class was ok, great speaker, but lectures were a bit fastpaced and tests were eh, so and so. As long as you do the practice problems and read, you should be fine.
dont mess up on the tests and you'll do fine. i failed the first midterm, aced the second, and got a b on the final and still got a c in the class. decent class though
Very bad lecturer. Leaves you confused and with no direction of whats going on. His tests aren't necessarily that hard, though.
A good professor. Class is a bit hard, but if you study the book, you'll do fine. He keeps you entertained with jokes.
His lectures are fast paced, but he keeps it interesting and is always glad to help outside of class. Great guy and probably the best professor I have had at Davis.
This man really knows his stuff. His lectures are very spontaneous however, and he likes derivations of equations a lot. For 3/4ths of the quarter we were doing quantum chem. His area of expertise is in high energy particle physics, so he's more of a physical chemist. Overall though he's a good teacher. Really made me enjoy highly technical stuff
It's always going to be hard to understand concepts of Q.M. so don't blame the professor too much if you don't understand his lecture. Professor McCurdy is a brilliant man, and he really, really wants you to do well in his class. Make sure you go to his and TA's OH asking Qs. Do all the HW and practice exams. his exams are easy. study your notes&hw
One of the best professors I've taken so far, lectures make as much sense as quantum mechanics can make. His exams aren't that hard, study off hw/lecture notes. Extremely knowledgeable.
Professor McCurdy is one of the best professors I have had at ucd. He is always so enthusiastic about QM that it gets contagious. The tests are fair, the homeworks are difficult and time consuming. Get a group of people to do homework together.
top tier lecturer, akin to professor harris (phy) in terms of clarity and quality. genuine interest in his students, the material, etc
His lectures are extremely confusing and you basically have to teach yourself everything. He's really funny, but can be condescending at times. Tests were reasonable as long as you study. Overall, I did enjoy the class, but I wish his lectures were a bit clearer.
He's a nice and pretty funny guy. He's also incredibly smart... Because of this, he'll sometimes go on tangents about advanced chemistry that confuse everyone. His tests are fair if you study and read the book. Take lots of notes during his lectures because what he says is usually important, but hard to understand as he says it (he goes very fast).
I got to know the guy and he's pretty nice, but this was one rollercoaster of a chem class. Overall he explains things continuously, rather than step by step so its easy to get confused. Heck even the TA's didn't understand what he was saying half the time. But if you read the book and go annoy him with tons of tedious questions, you'll be fine.
At times it may seem hopeless. It may seem as though you have failed the class, as if you understand nothing, as if you will not survive even the first quarter of honors gen chem. But always remember young padawan, the curve is your friend, the curve is you tool, the curve is your life. Use it well.
This was one odd course; his lectures were often about the logic and derivatives behind modern atomic physics. He definitely knows what he's doing, but he presents upper division level material to freshman, who mostly have not seen this before. The exams are fair and he curves at the end. I thought all hope was lost for me, but I passed. STUDY LOTS
Wow. What can I say about this class? The lectures were confusing, as he liked to go off on many tangents. He also liked to teach upper division chemistry to freshman. And while the tests were curved, they were extremely difficult. After this class, I wished I would have taken regular chemistry instead.
Although some students thought Professor McCurdy was difficult, I think if you had a good background in chemistry (i.e., AP Chem or another course), then the course was easier than most. He curves to the CHE 2A level, so everyone's grades get bumped up a lot. My advice to fellow students is to talk to him in office hours and attend every lecture.
This class was terrible. I do not enjoy physical chemistry and that is all he focused on because that is his area of expertise. The whole quarter I was confused about what was being taught and ended up teaching myself the material from the book and going to TA office hours every week. The curve is pretty good though.
Really enjoyed the class. McCurdy emphasized the fundamentals of quantum mechanics and despite the challenging weekly homework, he provided a great amount of material to do well on the midterms.
Sure his lectures, problem sets, and final are hard, but he has an OUTSTANDING curve, it's much better than the curve in Che 2, Phy 9, and most engineering classes. And he's a great experience. Not a great lecturer, but a great experience. You would be a fool not to take this man's QM class.
He goes way too fast during lectures, and he needs to talk louder. He goes off tangent sometimes about another advanced topic without really connecting it to the relavant course material.
McCurdy himself is very funny and seems to be an outgoing guy. I like that duriing lecture (1hr20m) he gives students a few minute break to stretch and wake yourself up. He also sets up an interesting demo, keeping lectures exciting. He's not very good at explaining concepts. The homework is ALOT, but isn't as difficult as the test questions...
Dont take this class
Before every lecture he sends out a few practice problems, where to find information in the textbook and videos that go into detail about what he will teach in the next lecture. Reading the textbook before each lecture helps a lot because it goes into more detail about what he's saying. Do all the extra work and you'll be fine in this class.
Worst professor ever. Goes off in random tangents during lecture and expects you to know what hes talking about. If you dont read the textbook before lecture its easy to get lost. Over complicates topics. A nice guy but cant teach. Take enderle instead. Had him as a sub when mccurdy was gone and he was so much better.
This class is very enjoyable if you attend lectures and read the text book. He is a chemical physicist so he confuses a lot more on math/physics than other professors, but if you like math chances are youll really like him. Very smart man
McCurdy's a nice, knowledgeable guy, but his lectures SUCK. They're not very informative, or organized, and he tends to go on confusing tangents. I did ok because I had some previous chem knowledge AND A REALLY HELPFUL TA. Go to the lectures, but use outside resources to understand the material. Tests are pretty easy, but study hard for the final.
I was expecting this class to be difficult. Personally, I liked McCurdy, but I would often question if I was in a CHE2A lecture or in a crazy upper div chem class. He mostly did practice questions during lecture. His midterms seemed fine with a good studying. The final was horrible, but it wasn't written by him so like I can't really blame him.
You could tell he loved teaching and was very passionate about chemistry, but his lectures were very, very confusing. His tests weren't as hard as Enderle's practice tests, but as someone who had little chemistry knowledge beforehand, it was basically like I had to teach myself everything. The curve was pretty decent, a 68% was a C+ for me.
McCurdy is a nice guy, but should probably not be teaching gen chem. You can tell he is really passionate about chemistry but the lectures are so confusing that nothing makes sense... at all. Pulled off a B+ from studying in the lib during finals week for hours everyday. Assuming he won't be teaching 2a-c ever again, but if he does.. good luck!
Really enjoyed his lectures because he went in depth on the physics part; it would definitely be challenging for people who haven't taken AP Chem because it was a review but if you did well in AP, this class shouldnt be too difficult. I can tell that he's deeply passionate about the subject. As long as you read the textbook, you should be fine.
Worst professor in history, and no I am not being dramatic. I failed his class and so did many other people I know. He rambles, rushes, and basically teaches himself. Expects you to know everything, practice exams are nothing like the actual exam. You will only pass if you're a master at chem, beginners stay AWAY PLEASE I BEG!
My background in chem is only regular in HS. This class was not the worst, but the experience could have been better. Prof. McCurdy didnt teach well, made the class more self-learning (yeah college whatever), & I never understood what he taught. Cengage taught me more than he did. If you get him, do the HW before going to class. READ THE TEXTBOOK!
Very intelligent professor, you can tell he is extremely passionate in his work and what he does and that was very inspiring. That being said, he's not the best lecturer. While he's extremely knowledgable, the way he presents the information is quite hard to grasp if you don't have a strong chem background and foundation.
Such a great guy; he is very well passionate about his work and chemistry. However, he's not the best lecturer (unless you have a strong chemistry foundation). His tests were quite fair at most; I mainly learned from doing the homework and attending tutoring sessions.
tbh I think it was his first time teaching che2a and he isn't a bad lecturer, but it can be hard to follow at times especially for someone who didn't take ap chem in high school. he follows the same grade rubric as the other professors, its just his way of teaching that distinguishes him. Just buy Enderle's reader and watch his youtube videos.
This was my first class at UC Davis, and Professor McCurdy really helped make the transition easier. Funny and engaging professor, assigns a reasonable amount of homework, and helps make things stick well. Lectures are fast-paced, so make sure you review your notes and understand them. Tests are extremely fair and easy compared to other professors.
Hard grader. Be prepared for difficulty spike
Professor McCurdy was a very friendly guy but not the best professor. I found his lectures specifically difficult to follow. I ended up learning most things through the text book, Enderle's reader, and the weekly OWL homework assignments. Do all the textbook work he suggests and attend review sessions before the exams! Generous curve on final grade
McCurdy is definitely a smart guy and he knows his stuff, he just isn't the best lecturer. He really tries, but his teaching style is not the greatest and is probably best for people who have a solid chem background. I got through the class by going to review sessions and tons of practice tests. Good luck.
I understand chemistry is a hard class but this professor nor the TAs helped with the fact that we were taking this class online and some of us were making a transition from high school college in the middle of a pandemic. Not very reasonable. Didnt give a chance at getting better grades on anything.
McCurdy is honestly a really nice guy. He knows his stuff but I think hes too advanced to teach genchem. His lectures are hard to follow, but go to his office hours, do the homework and go to his review sessions, and you will do just fine. His curves suck. The class is easy. Do the work and youll be fine. may be hard if you have no chem background
Don't take him. Take Enderle if you can. Like someone else said, he's too advanced to be teaching gen chem. He's a nice guy, but you'll have to over-work yourself to get a good grade.
Like the other people said I definitely think McCurdy is better suited to teach higher divisions of chemistry instead of general chemistry. His online teaching doesn't really work as the lectures weren't engaging and it was basically just him filling out a worksheet on camera. He was also somewhat rude to his TAs which was slightly offputting.
Not the greatest lecturer, hard to follow and seems confused himself part of the time. Tests are reworded to be "non google-able" which basically means they're weirdly phrased and difficult to understand, making it hard to test even on the more understandable content. Curve brought my grade from a 75% C to a C+, not the generous curve others claim.
McCurdy is a very caring man and stood hours after every class, office hours and review sessions to help students out. That being said, his teaching style is conceptual heavy and usually too advanced for a general chemistry course with students who are not majoring in chem or a related science. I learned from Enderle's reader&owl. Tests were fair.
Everything was on Zoom and was recorded. He does lectures by writing directly on powerpoint slides. The lectures can be confusing, but the slides are really useful. The OWLv2 homework and Enderle's practice exams/readers are great resources. Reading the textbook isn't really necessary. Also, he frequently collaborated with Enderle during lectures.
Professor McCurdy doesn't really explain things thoroughly and expects us to already know what's going on before lecture. His lectures don't help much and ended up confusing me more. The only reason I learned the material in this class is because of the OWLv2 homework and Enderles readers. Also, Enderles practice tests are your friends!
Great professor. The workload is pretty minimal. McCurdy is a great lecturer and is very knowledgeable. Although lectures are vague at times, he posts extra videos to dig deeper which helped. If I was ever confused on anything, office hours helped. Do the practice tests and attend the review sessions for exams.
Prof McCurdy is pretty good overall at explaining all the different concepts but often goes over way too many extra things that you really don't need to know, so it gets confusing at times what you're supposed to know and what you really don't. He's definitely suited for upper division courses, but for beginners definitely attend office hours.
I took prof. Mccurdy for Che 4A and struggled a lot in his class. His lectures are quite confusing and his homework is difficult. His tests Ilbeit were fair but he introduces so many topics between midterms it is very difficult to narrow down who you need to know and what you dont. Overall unrealistic expectations for a freshman class.
Professor McCurdy does a great job of getting students interested in chemistry. He genuinely wants students to learn and is willing to help during class and office hours. My only issue with CHE 004A was that the material was quite difficult considering that the class is meant for freshmen. Get ready for quantum mechanics!
Don't take this class if you're looking for an easy A. McCurdy's lectures are confusing, but he is accessible during his office hours. TAs saved my life in this class. Exams are easy compared to the hw material and passable if you understand the concepts. He curves at the end of the course and it brought my grade from a 82% to an A.
The hardest part is its front-heavy nature, as most struggled in the first month, but once that clicks, the rest of the class makes sense. McCurdy generally does a very good job, but occasionally gets bogged down in details. The biggest piece of advice is to do textbook problems, as they often appear on tests, almost directly from the book.
Its normal to be confused for the first few weeks, office hours and problem sets help a lot, if you stick with the class youll probably do fine
The lectures are fast paced and can be confusing but if you attend the office hours and learn the concepts from the homework you'll do great. There's a steep learning curve in the beginning of the class but after the first few weeks the course content begins to make more sense. Overall a great professor and course if you're interested in chemistry.
Prof McCurdy deserves a better grading. He is super passionate about what he is teaching and offers office hours and review sessions before exams. Lectures might be heavy at the beginning but you will get used to it. The concept of quantum itself takes a long time to understand, and that's okay. Exams are not hard, just go to his OHs.
Most passionate professor I've had. Coming into my first quarter at Davis and taking a fast paced class, I didn't think I was ready. However, by attending his office hours without the time constraints of lectures, the difficult quantum concepts started to click. The class was challenging, but developed a great foundation for what I'm learn now.
The majority of the content is focused on theoretical physics and quantum mechanics. I took this back in the fall, weight of the course is 30% final, 15% each midterm (there are two), 25% labs, 10% HW, 5% attendance (from discussion). Class is curved, but I was at 88 which became an A, so I'm not sure how good it was. This class WILL push you
The professor is very passionate and kind. The homework takes a long time to do if you have absolutely no idea what you're doing. The midterms and final are not as intimidating as you might think. As long as you do the homework and practice then you should be fine. Office hours help a lot. It might seem hard at first but it'll get easier.
Don't take Chem 4A unless you absolutely have to for your major. Professor McCurdy is very knowledgeable but expects too much from freshmen. His homework problems are challenging, but his midterms are easier. He tells you what types of problems will be on exams, so study those topics well. Find a good study group - it will help a lot.
Dr McCurdy was a great professor. The first few weeks were very hard with the concepts of quantum mechanics and it doesn't make much sense until it just clicks, but then the rest of the class gets easier. The weekly homework sets were challenging, but the tests were fair and easier than the problem sets. Overall a challenging but rewarding class.
Professor McCurdy was a fantastic professor who gave passionate lectures and really cared about our success. He was clear about class expectations and grading criteria, and he always held review sessions before exams to help us out. I couldn't have asked for a better intro Chem class.
I managed to get an A because an 86% was considered an A in this class with how he curves the grade. I found most of the lectures confusing, but the discussions help with recapping the topics. The homework was difficult, but the midterms were fair. I would recommend going to office hours because I started getting lost after a month into the course.
Professor Mccurdy is friendly with students, and quite entertaining to watch during lectures. However, his organization needs improvement. Sometimes he goes off in tangents talking about space, airports, mickey mouse without being very clear on what his analogies are for. However, the office hours were very helpful, the TAs will save your grade.
The lecture is super hard, same as the weekly homework. The weekly lab report is killing, group work but each of us should have our own report. I had thousands of words for each one in order to get an A. But the labs are interesting. The midterms and finals are much easier, and the grade will be okey if you work really hard.
Professor McCurdy is a very nice person. He would like to answer students' questions at any time. Moreover, because the first several weeks of this course are tough, before the first midterm, he gave an outline. It is really helpful. Besides, it takes me a lot of effort to complete the lab in this class because of the difficulty.
Dr. McCurdy is genuinely the best instructor I've had. The class is hard (it mirrors most of CHE 110A), but it's manageable if you are interested in the subject. Lectures are really good, and you can tell he's really passionate about what he does. If you have any questions after class, he will stay up to 30/40 minutes after class to answer them.
Amazing, really stirred my interest in chem. Make sure you know everything on the practice exams. Concepts are only hard till midterm1, understand those well and the second half will be a breeze. Go to OHs EVERY week, saves you a lot of the time spent staring at the hw. He's more than willing to help, take advantage of that and its a fairly easy A.
He's funny and nice. Since this class is harder than CHE2A he lowered the cut off by a lot which I appreciate. But unless you are a quantum mechanics lover, I don't recommend taking CHE 4A. His homework is usually hard but tests are doable. Don't spend much time of schrodinger eq. cuz he wouldn't make you solve that on a test. Go to his office hrs.
Labs and homework are difficult and take forever, but he goes over answers in office hours. The tests aren't too bad. There isn't any extra credit, but he gives a pretty generous curve. McCurdy really cares about students and is a great professor overall, but unless you really care about chemistry, this class is unnecessarily difficult.
The first part of the class is pretty tough, but then it get easier. Problem sets can be difficult, but the tests are straightforward. He gives great lectures and is passionate about the subject matter. Makes many efforts to help students succeed - notably, small-group office hours going over problems and other interesting topics was very valuable.
Grateful to have taken his class. The lectures were most often very difficult to follow & understand, however the TAs help a lot with confusion. Midterms & final were easier than homework (his HW problem sets were quite difficult). Makes a great effort to be available to students outside class (about 3-4 hours of office hours each week).
Professor McCurdy is an excellent teacher that cares very deeply for his students. The class is very difficult and the starting few weeks of class are even more difficult, but read ahead on the textbook, take good notes, and go to his and his TA's office hours. Make sure to do all the practice problems and you will do great.
CHE 04A is a challenging class, but McCurdy makes it amazing. He's a great lecturer who loves what he does and really cares about students. Homework is often ridiculously hard, but it's never busy work, and the tests are almost always easier. His office hours really help with understanding homework and concepts, and I recommend going every time.
The content of this class is super confusing and difficult, however if you study and make the effort to understand the content, it shouldn't be too hard. The prof is really hard to follow as he uses a lot of really high level physics, but he is always willing to stop and answer questions. But, in order to succees you need to use outside resources.
A lot of accessible resources outside of the class. Go to any office hour. Understand the homework and sample tests and you'll be fine. Nice curve.
McCurdy is great. Lectures are unnecessary. Memorize all the HW questions and practice test questions (even the old ones) and you will do super good. They are VERY hard though, and you should go to OH (Ta's, peer mentors, and McCurdy's) and ask for the answers. He curves ~84 to an A so this isn't even necessary, but guarantees you an A+ pretty much
Really great professor. There is definitely a learning curve at the beginning, but once the material clicks, it is very rewarding! Take advantage of both his and the TA office hours. Our TA was really good at answering questions/helping with HW. Also brush up on some basic calculus before the class as you will use some on HW starting week 3 or 4.
Challenging class, but Professor McCurdy is excellent. Attend lectures, do practice problems, and utilize office hours - it's a lot of work, but rewarding. unstuck ai was a game-changer for exam prep.
Clearly very knowledgeable about the subject, but the lectures were extremely difficult to follow, and every other student I talked with agreed. The tests are super easy compared to the lectures, but still not very simple. Some of the HW is hard and you need to read a lot of the textbook. Office hours can be helpful if he answers your question.
McCurdy is my goat. The lectures, while dense, are very informative and his enthusiasm and passion for the subject are obvious every lecture. His office hours are equally fantastic. There is not too much homework, but it will be the most difficult part of the course so commit your time to understanding it. In comparison, the tests are soooooo easy.
Not really a general chemistry class but more of an introduction to quantum mechanics; he expects students to know a lot more of physics and chem than what high school prepares you for. Midterms are pretty easy and based off of practice exams and problem sets. Problem sets are hard to do and are time consuming. Pray for a good TA.
Love him! Don't let the ratings fool you, most of the low ratings are from when he taught online during the pandemic, but in person he's really good.
Realistically best professor most students will ever get. Passionate, cares about student success, interesting lectures, connects material to other topics, works to improve on confusing topics in lecture after feedback in office hours. CHE4A as a class may be hard for some as any STEM class may be. Weekly problem sets are a big help for learning.
Professor McCurdy is a great professor to have for your first uni STEM course. He's very approachable, holds helpful (for the most part) office hours twice a week, and you can tell he's passionate about his work in teaching and research. Put in the effort to do the homework, and you will do fine on tests, which are graded very fairly.
McCurdy is a great professor who teaches a rigorous course. Office hours are very helpful (get there early). If you email questions he will respond at almost any time of day. Go to office hours, read the textbook, go to lecture, use the practice exams and textbook practice problems but most important: stay on top of the problem sets.
Top TA is Dylan Folkner.
Best professor I've had. Material is tough but McCurdy is very smart and teaches it well. Make sure to understand the homework and do the practice exams and you'll be fine. Don't sleep on the lab reports
Dr. McCurdy is very smart and knowledgeable which may make the class more difficult to understand, but I highly recommend him regardless. Even though some portions of the lectures are not applicable to the exams (Schrodinger), it is very interesting to listen to how his brain processes things. Exams are way easier than the homework as well.
Great professor, you can tell he puts in effort and is extremely knowledgeable. The material covered in this class is quite difficult so be prepared to go to office hours and put in the work. Curve is extremely generous and I honestly learned so much in this class.
Dr. McCurdy wasn't a terrible lecturer. However, he implemented a lot of extra information from upper division chemistry courses that made everything confusing. He is very knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about. Midterms and final were VERY easy compared to the weekly homework.
Prof. McCurdy is a very knowledgable, engaging lecturer who really challenges students to think about quantum mechanics and chemistry. He holds very accessible office hours and stays after class to talk to people. Be warned that 4A is a hard class though, especially if you, like many in the class, are a noobie freshman in fall quarter.
I cannot glaze McCurdy enough. He is so intelligent, and will go above and beyond as a professor. Something that I took almost for granted in first quarter. Yes the content is difficult, but the tests are much easier than you would think. I would take his upper-div quantum course outside of my major requirements just to hear him lecture again.
Good lecturer, content is difficult but tests are easy since they were basically the exact same as the practice exams.
CHE 4A is a very hard class, especially as an introductory chemistry intended for freshmen (it has a lot of upper-level concepts) but McCurdy is a great professor that understands the challenge and cares a lot about his students. The problem sets and lab reports are very difficult and time-consuming, but the tests are fair if you've done the work.
This class is not equivalent to AP Chem; be prepared also to learn some physics. Professor McCurdy is a really nice person who genuinely cares about his students. Go to the professor's and your TA's office hours; they WILL help you
