One of the most amazing classes I've had while at NCSU! The class is really interesting and fun. You learn a lot without even realizing it.
This was a great class and very easy is you come to class. Interesting projects. You learn so much!
This guy was awesome. Cool teacher, really funny, and no hw. Just a couple of easy projects throughout the year. A class to step away from the typical lectures and strict teachers.
Excellent Professor
Best teacher I ever had, usually I'm too shy to talk to my professors but he was really nice. The class itself is sooooooooo interesting, we watch crazy movies that I showed my friends just for fun~
Pretty awesome class! He made it extremely fun & entertaining!! He gives you a ton of grades in this class so if you slip up, it shouldn't be the end of the world!! The final is not cumulative which is great, but if you don't study the material you will do poorly! REALLY COOL GUY!
Doc S is one of the best professors I've had at state! His classes are really fun w lecture, group discussion & video clips. Participation bonus points & E.C. questions on tests. INCREDIBLY HELPFUL REVIEW sessions before each test. Class projects are fun to complete. Grades tests very fairly - throws out bad questions, etc. overall AMAZING
Awesome teacher and guy in general. He is extremely interested in insects and he transmits this enthusiasm to his class. I was scared about taking my non-science lab course and this was an excellent choice. Highly recommended class. We got to eat insects and watch a lot of really funny and sometimes gross videos. Go to the review sessions for tests
Best class ever! Best professor ever! The DE class is incredibly straightforward. Reviews are super helpful. So interesting for non-science majors. All pertinent information. Videos and pictures, anecdotes make class fun! You will not find a more knowledgeable professor. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
He is my favorite professor by far. His lessons also consist of videos that are sometimes extremely funny and sometimes extremely gross. In the middle of the semester, he gives you a chance to eat bugs (I definitely didn't eat any.) But overall, he's a really good professor. I'd definitely recommend him to anyone.
Class was always a lot of fun. Notes are pre-typed. Exmas are a little on the difficult side. Mini projects throughout the semester, 3 exams, the last exam is the final and it is NOT cumulative. Got to see video clips all the time. Great class!
By far my FAVORITE professor at NC State thus far. The mini projects throughout the semester definitely raise your grade! If you go to the review sessions, you will be completely fine for the tests!
Dr. Sorenson is one of the BEST professors I've ever had. He is interesting and entertaining. He gives lots of useful information in a clear way and is very receptive to questions. The class was amazing! I wasn't a bug person before this class, but I love them now. I'm taking more entomology classes with other professors because of Dr. Sorenson.
The best class I have ever taken in 4 years of college. And I'm an art student, and I hate bugs. But this class was the perfect blend of funny, interesting, amusing, and informative. If you're grossed out by bugs, don't let that deter you. I just put my head down on the desk during videos and was fine. Learned tons and don't hate bugs as much now.
He made class super interesting, which was very surprising. I learned a lot and can now tolerate bugs a lot more than before. The tests are semi-hard, there's a lot of material covered in each "unit" and there's a lot to study. Projects are easy though. He's always willing to help and gives lots of bonus.
Dr. Sorenson is a very nice guy! He is very helpful & sends reminders of when stuff is due. Exams are pretty tough, but he has extra projects to do, to help your grade. Interesting class!
Half the reason why I love this class so much is because of Dr. Sorenson! He is so enthusiastic about what he does, and will jump through hoops to help you with anything you need!
Dr. Sorenson is a great instructor. He is very funny and helpful when you ask for help. His tests are difficult but he offers study sessions and outside projects to help boost your grade.
I'm definitely not a bug kind of gal, but i absolutely love this class! I was expecting it to be my least favorite, but it has become my favorite of the semester. There's a few of tests, a bug scrapbook project, and a "bug in cup" journal project where you have to actually to take home insects and raise them (it's really not as gross as it sounds)
I HATE bugs but loved this class. Professor Sorenson rocks and he is such a great teacher. His lectures are very engaging and interesting. You never really have homework, just a few tiny projects here and there. Just 3 tests and the final isn't cumulative!!
Really likes what he teaches and makes it interesting too! Tests are difficult but he offers study sessions. Make sure you take extension notes on the handouts he gives each unit. The course notebook is mandatory and $15. They do take attendance and you need to be there for note taking. Does not give pop quizzes. Many outside easy projects!
Only have the highest praise for him. He loves this subject and cares about your grade. I did not like bugs but he made it interesting. Gives study session for tests and would recommend going to class and taking notes. There is not textbook to buy or read, thank god!
Prof. Sorenson is a great professor. He is funny and encouraging. The tests can be a little tricky, but if you come to lectures and study a little you should be okay. Learn at least the order-of-the-day common names so you know what he is referring to on the tests. Lots of video clips in class. Even for a insect-hater this class is a good one.
I don't like bugs, but I really loved this class! Tests are easy as long as you study; go to the review sessions - goes over what you specifically need to know. A few easy projects and four noncumulative tests. Great class!
Such a fun class! Dr. Sorenson is so fun and makes the material fun to learn. At one point you get the chance to eat actual insects. I would love to take this class again. Also an easy A.
Even online, it was clear how interested Dr. Sorenson was in the subject. He was well equipped with knowledge beyond this course and wanting to share the excitement of insects with students. He was willing to help students who needed it and explained his material well. He also made a lot of resources available to help.
Take this course. I promise you will not regret this. Take this course! You actually learn and take those lessons outside of the classroom. Dr. Sorenson has been my favorite professor at NC State thus far and I'm an English major. He cares that you learn something when you leave his class. He is the absolute best.
This is a class about bugs... and I really do not like bugs; HOWEVER, this class was great! Sorenson is very funny and the class is always interesting. Don't take it if you have a serious phobia, but if you are just a little squeamish you should be alright. The tests can be a little tricky, but if you study they aren't too bad.
Fun class that I actually enjoyed attending. Bonus points offered during each lecture. If you come to class and take notes, tests will not be a problem. Dr. Sorenson is hilarious and he loves what he teaches. Also, ya get to eat bugs if that's something you're into...
Clyde is the most dynamic, interesting & engaging professor I've ever had. The diverse material & teaching methods used capture the minds & hearts of students. I consistently looked forward to this class, my favorite at NCSU. I had little prior knowledge of entomology, yet found this course fascinating and a lot of fun to take! Highly recommend!
One of the best professors at NCSU, I am a senior now and have had many teachers in the past, this guy is up there. His lectures are extremely interesting, and he really knows his stuff. If you ask a question in class every day, you get a bonus bug, and you are almost guaranteed to pass the class with just the bugs. But make sure to study for tests
This was my favorite class ever because of Clyde. Somehow he made bugs interesting and made me excited to go to class. Pay attention and take notes and you will be fine. I did have to study for the tests a pretty good amount because there were pretty specific questions. Study the vocab list that he gives you on the moodle site. I LOVED THIS CLASS
Love love loved this class. Favorite class at NC State. Listen in lecture, study, and pay attention to the vocab and you should get an A. I hate bugs but I loved this class. If someone asked me my number one recommendation for what class to take, this would be it.
Dr. Sorenson is hilarious and a fantastic professor. Bugs are gross, and he is aware of that, but he really makes the class so much fun and enjoyable. He is super laid back and easy-going. You have to pay attention to the material and study pretty good to get an A but its not bad. I would take him again in a heartbeat.
Clyde is the man. Seriously, THE man. Can't begin to express how much I enjoyed his class. He's brilliant, passionate about what he's teaching, quick-witted, and hilarious. Not a lot of work (2-3 major projects), but make sure you attend lectures (lecture-based questions on exams) and ACTUALLY study for exams. Such a fantastic dude. Knows his bugs
Took this as an online Maymester class. Not recommended! $80 textbook that looks like a 5th grade science book-don't bother buying it. Just a recap of the lectures. The lectures were only miked to the prof. Couldn't hear anything else. Had to skip through group projects and other time wasters. Lots of surprise add ons for exams.
Super cool funny guy. Always throwing in fun stuff in lectures like commercials and movies involving bugs. Took this online, would recommend taking in person. Tests always had things in it from lectures- don't just watch the review as a way to study for the test unless you're in the in person class.
Really sweet guy but, because this was online, I just sat through 2hrs. a week listening to him just talk. The ppt has just pictures and maybe one sentence so everything you have to learn is by hearsay and I just can't learn that way. It's impossible to remember everything he says and then go be tested on it without any references.
One of my favorite professors I've had so far! You can tell he is really passionate about the subject and about his students. Tests are very specific and require you to recall specific details from the readings and lectures. Tests are heavily weighted.
This class is very fun, even for those who don't like insects. Professor sorenson is funny and nice and you can do well if you study a lot. However his tests are very hard and specific. They're also heavily weighted. I spent hours studying and managed to do ok. So if you're not a science person, I wouldn't recommend unless you can devote time!
Clyde is my true love. He loves bugs more than life itself and he really brings his humor into every lesson and makes it fun and interesting to learn about the lil buggos. 13/10 would recommend. Tests make up most of your grade and they're super easy if you study his review slides.
I took his online section and it was great. About 7-8 hour long lectures per test and are supplemented with his pdf outlines. You can'st just study the pdfs but you can skip around the videos because large chunks of them are in-class group work that doesn't apply. Tests are extremely straightforward if you've studied at all. He's passionate and fun
You can tell he's passionate. I had zero interest in insects, but he is very engaging. Grade involves making a scrapbook, doing a paired project (short report/presentation), and three (fairly easy) tests. Funny and readily answers any questions. He wrote the textbook and did it in a way that closely mirrors his lectures, quality stuff.
Dr. Sorenson is so funny and super passionate about Entomology! The distance ed. class was super easy as long as you keep up with the lectures and pay attention. Tests are long, but again if you pay attention and go to the review sessions youll be fine.
Best professor I've had at NCSU! Dr. Sorenson is hilarious and his lectures were fascinating. He gives the online section a time to take the exams in person if they want (do this if you hate DELTA). Be sure to start taking pictures for the scrapbook early on b/c it's 150 pts! Reading the textbook helps but isn't necessary. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
has an amazing teacher that will make you love insects. if your not the type that does well with vocab id stay away because the tests are almost vocab quizzes. there are a group project and a few others but they're kinda fun and not too difficult.
Clyde has a great sense of humor, and a lot of knowledge about the subject matter. Never a boring lecture with him.
I liked Dr. Sorenson a lot. Though, I really did come into this class thinking it would be super easy. I would go to class and sit through lectures doing other work for classes. when it came time to study I thought I did pretty well doing so - clearly not. my advice would be to take it seriously, it is a super fun class with an awesome prof,
I love Dr. Sorenson! ENT 201 isn't too hard; it's designed for non-science majors. Sorenson loves what he teaches and isn't full of himself; he's just a nice old man who thinks bugs are neat. Participate in class, put effort in projects, take notes, study, and you'll do fine. Prepare for (optional) bug interaction!
Unclear and vague grading criteria. Expect students to guess what the grading rubric is, and if it does not reach his specific standards you will get an F. COVID-19 online classes have "reflections", write min 400+ words each. Scrapbook: 10+ topics (summer), 15+ (fall/spring). Will post your grade hours before grades official, no chance to improve.
ENT201 is fun, and Dr. Sorenson is AMAZING. Great personality, great lectures, really makes the class bright and fun. This class is test heavy (3 tests, 80% of your grade), so make sure to watch the lectures and STUDY. It is an information class, not too complicated. You will never be bored with Sorenson! He will answer all questions thouroughly.
He is so passionate and funny with all of his bug cartoons. Super nice guy who really wants to see people succeed.
Took his class asynchronous. Passionate and charismatic guy, makes watching pre-recorded lectures not a bore (they were recordings of in-person lectures). The tests were fair. I learned a lot.
Dr. Sorenson is a great professor and he made lectures very entertaining. Very test-heavy (80%) and assignments are sometimes vague, but overall not a super difficult class. Tests are multiple-choice and include in-class examples/videos so pay attention. He does offer a couple of bonus points for participation.
Professor Sorenson is the best! He's so funny and sweet and tells amazing stories. He knows exactly what he's talking about. You can tell he's passionate about what he does and he puts his all into his classes, making lectures more fun and hands-on/interactive. I would absolutely recommend this class and hope I can do another class just like it.
Dr. Sorenson is obviously extremely passionate about what he does, which is really appreciated. He was funny and lectures weren't boring, most of the time. However, his tests were really specific and confusing at times. His lectures also include him just talking for 1h15min with no text on ppts or anything, which I cannot learn from.
IF YOU DO NOT NEED TO TAKE THIS CLASS AND YOU CAN PICK ANOTHER CLASS, I AM BEGGING YOU, PLEASE TAKE ANOTHER CLASS. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! I took this class because it seemed interesting, DO NOT TAKE IT IF THIS IS YOU RIGHT NOW. the class is lecture heavy and the content is vague. I never write reviews but i hated this class so I wrote one.
Clyde is an AMAZING professor. He is so funny and so passionate about teaching about insects. He makes the class so interesting and you are constantly learning so many fun facts about insects. I love this class! The 3 tests are worth 80% of your grade so make sure you study! You have 3 small projects but they aren't too hard. He's awesome!
Mr.Sorenson is such an amazing teacher! This was my favorite class of the semester and I made sure I never missed a class. My favorite thing about his class is how fun he made lectures, they were never boring. The class itself is pretty lecture and test heavy so you will definitely need to study before tests
I wish I could take this class over and over every semester for the rest of college. Dr. Sorenson is so cool he makes class super engaging and fun theres a textbook but he wrote it and its almost verbatim what the lectures cover so you dont really need it if you pay attention to the lectures and the specific examples its easy to pass
Dr. S kept his lectures interesting and engaging. I could have gotten an A+ but I boomed the first test because I did not study properly. He makes review sessions so watch those and you don't have to get the textbook if you don't want to. However, there is a lot of material to cover and a lot to test questions to study hard. lectures are recorded.
Dr. Sorenson is a show all by himself. He's got a pretty eccentric lecture style compared to most, which I appreciated a lot. Not much coursework at all, but the tests are really long and really detailed. I could study a ton and still not get an A just because the exams have questions that detailed and obscure. Otherwise, this is a fun little class
Sorenson obviously loves what he does, and he is very good at it. Passionate about his job, and makes his lectures entertaining. The final grade is heavily based on test scores but paying attention in lecture or rewatching them online makes them easy. The supplementary assignments are easy enough, and should boost your grade as long as you do them.
I loved this class! Dr. Sorenson was amazing in every aspect and made me so excited to learn about insects even with my aversion to them at first. I would highly recommend this class if you are ready to put in the work and commit to it.
Take ENT 201 for your GEP Natural Science! He is very passionate about insects; his lectures are always fun! You can get "bonus bugs" for answering a question correctly or for giving an answer/question that entertains him. There are three tests, three fun and easy projects, and the final. You also get to touch bugs that get passed around the room!
Clyde is an amazing and attentive professor he cares about his students and will work with anyone as long as you communicate. He is a fair grader and a total hype man for all of his students. He's passionate about what he's teaching and he's very knowledgeable he will have some very very interesting experiences and his class they will never forget.
As a warning to anyone thinking to take this class, I HIGHLY suggest not to, especially if you think it's gonna be easy. Personally, I don't intend what I'm about to say to be hurtful just the truth. In a nutshell, he's vague with material, doesn't specify what's on exams, is a hard grader, you're using a lot of time, projects don't help grade.
Honestly, do not listen to the bad rankings. Professor Sorenson gives out extra credit just for asking a question, serious or not. The material is interesting and enjoyable. It is test heavy, but he does a review session 2 days before each exam that covers a HUGE portion of what you need to know. Study and you are guaranteed to get a good grade!
Easy class. The first trine is the most difficult. You don't need the textbook, but the content is literally exactly the same as the lectures, often verbatim. If you have the textbook you don't need to take notes, so you should buy it. There are a couple easy projects, but there is very little work outside class overall. Multiple choice exams.
Dr. Sorenson is incredibly passionate about what he teaches. He's funny, his lectures are interesting, and it's a very straightforward class if you actually show up and put in the bare minimum effort. He gives extra credit for participation, his lectures are recorded, tests are multiple choice. Wonderful professor and great class.
Dr Sorenson is my favorite professor I've ever had. His lectures are super fun and engaging, and he's obviously incredibly passionate about what he does and wants you to be too. If you like bugs, or are just looking for an easy course for credit, I 100% recommend.
The best professor I've had so far. He gives out bonus bugs for answering questions + making him laugh. Fantastic + interesting lectures. 3 difficulty since the exams were pretty hard to me. Few assignments so the exams (3 total) are worth around 70% of your grade. My advice - go to class, learn how to study for this subject, and actually study!!!
I never thought learning about bugs could be so fun! Sorenson makes you fascinated by bugs through his fun, interactive lectures. The exams are easy if you go to class and look over your notes. The class is based on two exams, a final, a short report/presentation, a scrapbook, and an experiment. Totally recommended for non-sciences majors!
Super nice and funny guy, makes talking in front of a big class much less scary. Class itself, you need to attend all the lectures or get the notes from someone. Everything on the tests comes from lectures, unless he assigns a small reading/video outside class, which hardly ever happens. I loved this class.
Dr. Sorenson is amazing, a super fun professor and very easy going. He tells lots of interesting stories and makes the class more engaging and fun. His tests are kind of detailed but he includes bonus questions and gives lots of bonus points in class. Overall an easy class and an awesome professor
If you study hard and really listen to the lectures you will get so much out of this course! I have learned so much and laughed SO HARD!
Take this class! Sorenson is an awesome guy and makes class super entertaining. Tests are a little difficult but if you pay attention in class and study, you'll do fine. He gives plenty of opportunities to earn bonus points as well. I always looked forward to this class even though it wasn't my forte.
Dr. Sorenson's class was very enjoyable and always entertaining. You can tell that he cares about his students and is passionate about insects.
He's got a great sense of humor and always teaches in a fun and approachable manner. He's super nice and understanding and makes the class engaging. He cares about the subject and is very knowledgeable, but doesn't expect everyone to have the same enthusiasm and instead wants to make class educational and enjoyable and his enthusiasm is infectious.
Professor was genuinely the funniest and best professor I've had yet! Very engaging class. Just test heavy! Would take again though.
In all my years of undergrad, Sorenson was my favorite professor. He's been my reference for so many different jobs and an amazing friend and advisor outside of the classroom. The class was very easy, though I am already an entomologist - didn't study at all and got 100 on all exams.
Dr.Sorenson is a very funny guy and really knows his stuff. His class is very test heavy, and I will say that some of the questions on the test were not discussed in class. However, he does offer bonus points, which helps to make up for that. Overall, the course is not too difficult, the projects are easy and genuinely fun, just follow directions!
Dr. Sorenson was amazing! His lectures were interesting, and he gave out tons of opportunities for bonus points. His grade does consist of heavy testing, but as long as you rewatch lectures and watch the study session beforehand you can pass easily with an A. He really is one of the sweetest professors at NC State.
This was by far one of my favorite classes and Dr. S plays a huge role in that! The projects are so fun, especially if you're into the topic. I think he can make the topic of entomology interesting to anyone, just do the assignments to the best of your ability and study and it will all be okay.
I had a lot of fun in this class. Professor Sorenson is really good at explaining stuff in an engaging, memorable way. I switched my minor to entomology after taking this class.
Prof. Sorenson is the best processor here at NCSU. He is beyond passionate and such a cool guy. He cares so deeply about his teachings and also cares about us as students. This class is so much fun, and you will learn so much. As someone who isn't even a science major or interested in science, this is one of the best classes I've taken.
He's the sweetest professor ever. As long as you show up he doesn't really care if you're paying attention or not. His class is very very easy as long as you study what he tells you to. He does do assigned seats but you can ask him to sit next to your friend and where you'd rather be.
I really liked Dr. Sorenson. He was really funny and obviously enjoys his job. I learned a lot. His exams are a tad difficult but don't do what I did and wait until the last minute to study. Pay attention in class cuz the notes that are passed out don't have everything. Solid teacher! He's a g!
Dr.Sorenson is a really good guy. He goes out of his way to make sure that he teaches the content to the fullest, and it is more than apparent that he really loves what he teaches and wants you to feel the same. I highly recommend this class.
Amazing insights into fieldwork and fun stories throughout the class. The only difficult part of the class are the tests, but I somehow managed to score really good on all of them. Study for the tests a you should get an a! The class is made for people to get a b for just showing up and doing the work.
Dr Sorenson is the best. He always has hilarious demonstrations and analogies to remember topics that he will test on. Even if you are not the best test taker, he holds review sessions a day or two before every test where he skims over everything that will be on the test, so if you study, you can do well. Highly recommend Dr. Sorenson. Funny guy.
Dr. Sorenson loves bugs. He is probably the most enthusiastic person about bugs I've ever met. His class is easy and fun, just remember to study (whoops). Projects are interesting and cool. I force fed a bug monster energy!
Dr. Sorenson is an amazing professor, great stories and funny. Can only miss 3 classes before it affects your grade. 3 projects, not worth a ton, not super time-consuming, but very fun. 3 tests, major part of grade, easy if you go to lectures + look over notes, multiple choice + extra credit. Lectures cover everything. Wonderful class, def take it!
Professor Sorenson is good, but maybe I just wasn't that interested in insects because I did not like this class at all. I read somewhere that this is a very easy class, but a guy who studied weeks before the exam barely passed it. If you are interested in bugs, take this class because you will learn everything you need to know about them.
I really liked the professor but I think the class has gotten harder this year as previous friends mentioned having notes for tests but when I took it this semester we had no access to notes at all. The tests are extremely hard you have to learn so many terms on insects just in order to understand the questions that are being asked on the exam.
So fun and SO funny but u HAVE to study for his tests. They are a lot of terms and memorization, but still easier than any kind of math class. Go bugs.
Dr. Sorenson was awesome! The tests are pretty rough as you need to remember a lot of info for the questions. Aside from that, it was an enjoyable experience learning about insects under him. Study the handouts a lot and you are well on your way with passing his class!
Best professor ever. Completely understanding, hilarious, and awesome. It's an insanely interesting class, and while it does have a lot of work and requires attention, it is very easy. It's incredibly hard to fail unless you don't do anything. Tests require some studying but are multiple choice and 90+ q's so even if you get a few wrong its ok.
I adore this man and his class. It's not the *easiest* A, but personally, I enjoyed doing the work, which I don't say often. He's really funny, gives engaging lectures and knows his stuff. Extra credit questions on every exam as well as another EC opportunity. Would absolutely take again.
Doc S is super funny and wants everyone to enjoy learning about insects. Many interesting and fun projects, like a big scrapbook assignment and a bug experiment with real bugs! Tests are multiple choice and he throws out questions that confuse too many people. Don't expect less work because it's DE. Put in effort and get creative!
