makes it your "responsiblity" to learn everything..in a limited amount of time. hes very strict, refuses to bend..but hes a decent teacher. hes hard though. his tests are decent.
This class is a weed out class and so every section available will be difficult. I've heard that Webster is easier than Wirz. If you go into the class expecting to work, you should enjoy it. I liked his lectures.
He is a great professor! I learned a lot from him, and he makes his lectures enjoyable. Grading is understandable and not outrageously bad.
He is a great professor. Lectures interesting, not a fall asleep class. His goal is to get everyone to understand Chemistry. Great professor!
He wants you to do the work and read the whole chapter, BE PREPARED. There is no slacking, and it's easy to fall behind. Good teacher overall, but he is intimidating when you ask questions.
This guys sounds like the dad on American Pie. He is OK. But somehow I think Wirz is easier. Webster only gives MULT CHOICE exams, but they're pretty tricky. Class if pretty hard if you dont know your stuff. He asks analytical questions.
If you read the chapter before lecture you will understand everything better. Go to lecture, even if you didnt read though. Tests are multiple choice sometimes tricky. Chemistry is just a hard class.
he's an ok teacher. yea.. just ok. nothing special.
Do the homework!
He doesn't actually teach anything. He mostly does some examples and you follow along. If you miss something and ask a question, well...just don't, okay? Usually he says something like,"Well, you would KNOW if you read!" and makes students f
Webster is a horrible professor. If you get him, get out immediately
This guy is a horrible teacher. DO NOT TAKE HIM! He flunks like half the class. No curve other than the regular. He expects you to remember EVERY detail you learned in Chem 1A and Chem 1B. Lecture is just 3 problems during class and THATS IT!. Everything else is up to you. VERY hard tests.
chem is generally a hard class. but webster cuts the crap and gets to the point. it's hard to follow sometimes but study and do the hw problems and you should be fine. he gave us 25 extra points if we got a 50% or higher on the 2nd midterm. he's hard but he's the best chem prof . i've had so far...
horrible teacher, doesnt prepare one for the test, only does a couple of problems.
50% and lower class average on both midterms. 39% class average on the final. Dont take this guy.
He just talks... and only writes out examples occasionally so learn to take good notes and read the book! His lectures don't really clarify anything.
He's pretty difficult but he is an awesome professor. He really cares if you pass or not. Just make sure you read the book, if you do that and put in the time you should have no problem passing. Great professor!
he tries to scare the crap out of you during his lectures to get you to try harder. his exams are hard but you learn a lot in his class and he cares about how well we do and understand the material. if you want to learn, i recommend this prof but if you're looking for an easy a this isn't the prof
This was a great class. He helped me a lot. He gave lots of examples to help you understand and he emphasizes theory! The people who gave poor ratings for him probably either missed class or didn't study enough or attempt to go to his office hours. Take him, he is one of the best professors I had.
WARNING: Webster's one tricky **** when it comes to his multiple choice exams. The math work for his exams are easy, but the concept questions are insane because he never really went over the concepts in precise detail. However, he's a very generous man when it comes to curving the grades.
He's alright, like a previous comment, his exams are tricky, the concepts mainly because there can be more than one correct answer and you chose the most correct...He is charismatic so he keeps you awake and learning...so thats good.
This class was a joke. Very easy. I got A+ baby.
can be tricky at times, but he is alwasy willing to help! go to his office hours, trust me! he can be generous!

Yikes! This guy seriously teaches you NOTHING in lecture. You learn everything from the book, or you're screwed. Ok if you have a lot of reading time and are motivated; if not, don't even think about taking this class. Also, makes you feel stupid if you ask a question in lecture. I was too scared of him to go to his office hours. It's true what they say: Chem 1 is a weed-out class. To be perfectly honest, I was most definitely weeded out.
tough...unclear...definite weeder class no matter what the faculty says
One of the least intelligent professors on campus.
his handwriting is comparable to a right-handed blind man writing left-handed.... in an off-road excursion. His lectures don't follow the content in the book so much... but they are somewhat clear... his tests are tricky... if you finish 30 minutes early, then look over your answers.. i guarantee you'll find at least 3 or 4 easy mistakes.
this man is very tricky indeed on his quizzes and midterms and finals--all tricky. i was worn by comments left on this cite but ignored them and boy, was i sorry. multiple choice test freakin' sucks. do not take this class if you are not good with multiple choice exams. he is nice though, and his lectures are not boring. messy handwriting lol
Webster's class might have been hard as some have said, but, I think his test helps a person be prepared for the future. Yes, they may be hard, but he pushes his students to think outside of the box. Instead of just teaching plain old chemistry, he wants you to understand it in many different aspects and ways. And his lectures do pertain to the boo
He was a good teacher... wasnt bad just Chemistry is a hard subject... he really cares about his students... he does have messy writting but its okay he is really nice and very approachable.
He was a pretty good teacher. The thing to watch for is his tests and quizzes. They are extremely tricky. There's no mandatory homework for the class. He also likes to talk about his wife and flying his plane... The whole class is on an adjusted grade scale. i.e. 80% is A- in the class.
Looking back this class was very easy but he key to passing is understanding the principles, and really reading the book. webster is a great prof although heis test were very very tricky once you understand the principles the test should be easy
good professor, TRICKY TESTS. you have to read the questions carefully. Remember to do the problems he assiagns and show up to class. He tells you which charts to memorize and stuff. Overall pretty good teacher
Although I did well in this class, I will have to be honest, Webster does not know math. I don't fall for his numerical dsylexia for one second. It's his excuse to make constant mistakes throughout lecture, which also explains why he would never fully go about the problems and give a correct answer. If your a female & ask a question he'll be an ass
he's overall an excellent teacher. i learned more from the book though. Do the assigned questions he asks for and you will be fine. BE CAREFUL of tests and quizzes they can be really tricky! Got an A in the class. Great TEACHER
He was a great teacher. I loved him. His tests and quizzes are tough but not impossible. I would take him again if i could, for any chem class.
great teacher, he uses old questions from old test pay attention and you will get that easy A
I would never take him again; not because he is hard, but because he does not teach! I mean all he does is just give examples without explaining where they came from. You really have to read the book or you will get a C to a D in the class. Overall, he is not bad. I prefer a different way of teaching though. His tests can also be tricky and hard.
He is a good professor and can be very helpful. The class was really hard for me though. His tests are difficult and he doesn't do notes so you really have to read the book. I recomend that you take another professor if you can.
Let's just say that he is very exprienced professor. However, his lectures are very boring to listen to. But he makes funny jokes sometime and then. His exam's weren't as hard as I expected but that's my personal point of view. He gives many example problems during his lecture that will help you understand the material. STUDY HARD!! You will get A!
Overall good teacher. Knows his stuff. Explains clearly. Tests are tricky yet fair. Doesn't curve, uses the point system.
Webster is a true professor. He cares about his students and is very helpful during office hours. He treats you like an adult and expects you to come to class prepared so you can understand what he is talking about. Do well on your midterms so you dont relie on the test redemption. The final covers everything, so dont wait to the last min. to study.
Dr. Webster is one of the best teachers at UCR. He is so helpful when you have questions. Don't listen to others..he is not boring...he uses stories to relate things with chem...i'm not saying he is easy but if you study you will do very well. He is not too easy but not difficult either. Overall, awesome professor.
Very clear lectures! Tells stories from back in the day which somehow relate to chem. He makes for an awesome intro to chemistry.
really nice guy..lecs arent that boring as some of the others. he actually explains the material and goes over sample prob. do the homework. he has some good entertaining stories. cute old man!
Best chemistry teacher ever i learnt more from this guy than my high school teacher. highly recommended. he's genius he also adds in some interesting anecdotes in his lectures. Good man. Always talk about alcohol haha.
His lectures are very helpful! I highly recommend taking him! He is a great teacher and his class isn't that boring! His method of teaching is very clear although his tests are pretty hard I recommend studying the notes and reading the chapters.
The homework load is light and the midterms are reasonable. I would definitely recomend this professor to anyone, EXCEPT people who dont want to do some work. I mean, you are paying for this right?? His isn't extremely funny but he does have his yucks. The only reason he sometimes comes across as hard is because of his previous navy background. A++
not hard becuase of the curve. test arent hard, just pay attention to the question. thats where he gets you.
He tries to put on a tough guy act but his class really isnt hard. You can tell he puts alot of work in his lectures, more so than any other professor ive had. He does a good job going over specific examples of concepts. His homework is optional... i didnt do it but still got an A.
piece of cake.
test are hard. really low avg. he gives no extra crdit. no lecture slides, practices exams or anything. TA's suck ass. Doesn't explain things, expects you to already know how to do things. all calculations. knowing the basics won't help you.
Webster is a pretty good teacher. He explains things well. His exams can be very difficult. In the class I took the first exam was really easy and the second exam owned everyone. He has a cool policy where if you do well on the final he will bring up one of your midterm grades. So study hard for the final. He is also helpful in office hours.
did a very good job of explaining things in lecture
He explains concepts really well and is passionate about this subject. You don't want any other teacher (even if the other teachers are easier). His technique actually prepares you for real-world calculations, especially if you want to be an MD and take the MCAT. Schoeller and Bertrand have nothing on this man for the role of teaching CHEM 1B.
Exams: 75% Straightforward 25% Tricky Stuff. Lecturer: Great Lecturer, has a weird method of solving problems. Misc: Slow T.A's, No Practice Test, No Slides, Hardest 1A Professor out of them all, No extra credit, Light homework load. Grades: I did decent, I'd say 40% of the class failed, 45% got D's,C's,B's, 15% A's. Overall take only if you must.
Lemme tell you something about clyde. he swears like hes the meanest guy. but hes not at all. he explains things extremely well in class and if you go to office hours he works with you one on one and doesnt make you feel dumb. his tests are really tricky though. just make sure you read the question through all the way and you'll be good.
This guy is a wonderful teacher!! He is a great help when it comes to difficult topics. Reading is extremely important; the midterms are derived from the reference sections of each chapter!
fun teacher. Gives tricky tests.
For freshman who are transitioning towards the college life please don't take Clyde because he is a very difficult professor! He expects you to do insane amounts of reading and his tests will reflect that. My TA was FOB which didn't help me at all... I failed 2 out of 3 of my mid-terms but still got a B+ in his class. His final was easy. Don't risk
Extremely comprehensive professor. Teaches by principles, not facts and formulas. (although you must know them too, that's why he's so difficult). If you really want to understand chemistry, take his class--not for the weak minded. Very good professor of chemistry.
He is a good teacher; funny, and not boring.
Pray to your book-god as you'll be worshiping your chem book for a while. His midterms are a combination of CONCEPT and calculation. You really need to go to his lectures because not only does say giggle-at-me jokes, he really knows his materials. He gives pretty decent lectures and you need to keep up with hw. No extra credit. Not for weakof heart
Generous curve, i got an A. His midterm covered the concepts and calculations so understand the stuff, its not straightforward. study HARD. Hes very helpful and will not make you feel stupid, go to office hours. lectures are entertaining and what he says in there thats not covered in the book will be on the exam
work hard do all the problems, even the ones not underlined, and you shall succeed.
He's hard, but he actually teach (even though I barely understand what he's teaching?). Bad hand writing, he goes really fast! HAVE TO READ THE BOOK,it'll help. Attend lecture regularly, DON'T DITCH! 5 problems due every week, quiz every week. I would say AVOID him if you can, he's hard unless u'r hardworking! Funny, but hard.
He is the most intimidating guy you'll ever meet, but man is he nice and extremely helpful. His tests are hard as hell, calculations and concepts, very tricky, look carefully at answers, degrees C and K will screw you over. Generous curve though.
Seems mean at first, but he is actually not that bad, his tests are pretty easy so you'll be ok
GO TO CLASS!!!!! AND READ THE BOOK! O and make sure that your cell phone does not go off in class! He is crazy. His lectures are pointless but still go.
He challenges you a lot but that is what he gets paid to do. He is extremely helpful. Sometimes he appears unapproachable, but you should not be intimidated. He is a great professor. The class is not easy but if you go to class, and you do all your work and take great notes, you should do great.
He is a really hard teacher and his tests are super tricky! This is not high school anymore...if you want a real college professor...Webster is the guy...hes pretty funny and really helpful. Go to his office hours and be his friend...hes a very very smart man and he expects a lot out of his students so get prepared to work really really hard
TESTS ARE SO HARD!! And not enough time to do the questions! It's insane! But he's a good person.
He's a cool guy and keeps things just interesting enough that the majority of the class pays attention rather than falling asleep.
He's tests are extremly tricky and hard, but He has grading system that 54% or higher is c-. so he is not that bad. If you study and go over the book I'm sure he will be great professor to choose
He is a great Prof. His homework are not hard, most of them are easy. Even though lots of people say his exams are hard, he curves his exam scores. Not really curve but giving the students a cut off point for a C-(the passing grade). So, he is a nice Prof. The only advise is read the book!
Tricky test. And does not care if students have problems
Pretty hard, but if you can solve all the problems on his past midterms/finals, then you'll be fine. The finals for both classes had problems exactly taken out from the midterms.
Webster may be an insanely smart man at chemistry but he sucks at teaching it. His midterms/final are ridiculous. they are more conceptual than the actual straight-forward material of chemistry. He killed my love for chemistry. He does cool hand gestures though.
he is a great prof. His midterms r ridiculously hard and also the final. However, you should go to lecture. He is funny and cool to talk to!
His midterms purely test an individuals ability to apply concepts to simple problems. Many of the midterm questions were very tricky, but very easy to do. Most of the questions were not even discussed in lecture but through his teaching one was able to manipulate an answer. All i can say is if you want to learn Chemistry, and be prepared for the MC
His midterms purely test an individuals ability to apply concepts to problems. Very tricky problems but very easy to do. Most of the questions were not even discussed in lecture but through his teaching one was able to manipulate an answer. Take him if u want to learn Chemistry, he will prepare u for the MCAT! I got an A in the class!
Will talk about the navy use military time and tell other strange but very interesting stories about his life that make you respect him. He is a really cool guy but his exams are very hard and he only teaches calculations while he tests concepts.
Quite honestly the best professor I have had @ UCR so far. His lectures are informative with interesting stories in between to reinforce knowledge. Midterms are somewhat challenging cause he actually makes you think. But Final is pretty easy compared to the midterms.
I find myself really missing this lecturer. If you are in school to challenge yourself, do not avoid him. If you earn his respect, it is for life. He is a wonderful teacher and human being. I had him for my 1A class.
Professor Webster is such a nice guy if you respect him. His tests are a little tricky so you need to know the material but if you go to class and pay attention you'll do great. There's also a nice curve so like 80% is still an A-, and if you score better on the final than your lowest midterm grade he will raise the percentage on the low midterm.
Hard Tests, no Sample midterms. He knows his stuff though and I highly suggest going to lectures. Do not cram for these kind of midterms otherwise there "WILL BE PAIN"
Prof. Webster truly teaches his students about chemistry. He is not the avg professor who just throws you a few formulas and if you memorize them well enough you get an A. Study hard for the tests; they're challenging but fair! Despite the grade you receive, you're guaranteed to learn more than any other section.
I love this professor.. NOT!! but if u dont get an A, you are stupid
I had him for chem 1A, even though his exams are kinda tricky in times, his lecture explains most of the stuff fairly well. on top of that, he has a nice curve and midterm redemption system, so you can learn a lot in his class, and yet it is still possible to get an A. Best chem prof. i had so far.
Webster is hard but you actually learn stuff. However, he screwed me over I never got my redemption points!
Fair exams, reading the book is necessary to understand and do well.
prefer him over Wilson.uses a fair curve, tests are pretty tricky just make sure to read the questions. use his office hours, EXTREMELY helpful :)
Requires you to read chapter before lectures, sometimes is hard to follow, has a nice curve but there is a reason for that
Very smart man, always willing to help. Its chem, get used to a hard class, and treasure professors who actually care about their students like him.
Amazing and caring professor. Always willing to help. GO TO LECTURE. He goes over many sample problems that help you understand the material. CONCEPTS are huge on his test. Read the book. He is a great professor.
In the syllabus, Dr. Webster gives tips for performing well in his class. They are NO JOKE. I got a C in Chem 1A and a C- in Chem 1B, but have scored a B or above on both midterms and all but 1 quiz. He is demanding, but will never ask more of you than you can give. Just do the work, and you will do well. He gives you every chance to pass. Use it.
Professor Webster is hands down the best professor I have had at UCR. He is a very honest man who does not try to screw the class over. Of course his expectations are high, but he makes sure that his students are learning the material. I would definitely recommend him to those who value and cherish learning from a man with many years of experience.
Excellent Professor, expects a lot of work but only because he knows that his students are capable of doing the work. He is also extremely helpful and will never turn a student down if they express an earnest need for aid. He will always do what he can for his students and there are not many professors like him at the university level anymore.
Great professor. He's interesting and clear. Exams were difficult but definitely doable. Very fair class. If you put in the time you'll do great. He's extremely helpful. Offers extra credit assignment which turned out to be the same exact thing from one of the SI lectors... I would definitely recommend him.
