Amazing Professor, actually uses real life situations around campus to help give insight to the class. He really cares about the course as he helped make the course and helps everyone succeed.
He only taught the second half of the semester. Tanner wants you to succeed. Everything on tests was in lectures or DTLs. Tells you what to expect for exams and quizzes if you go in during office hours. I was in a lecture hall with 100 people and he took the time to ask everyone their names. Really nice guy and very understanding if you talk to him
So chill and nice. He really wants you to succeed and understand why things work the way they do. If someone missed class, he reached out to keep you in the loop. During final project presentations, he gave good constructive criticism when he could have ripped some of the groups apart. Would take again in a heartbeat.
For 1620: Good teacher, may ramble a little but overall is concise on what you need to know and makes emphasizes tested content. Only teached for the second half of class but was good for the time being. Tests were generally easy if you studied all DTL and previous quizzes. Quizzes are every 2 weeks and are take home.
For 1620. I liked Prof. Tanner, but the lectures were constantly, constantly interrupted by students. He would stop lecturing to answer questions, which often left students waiting to understand what we were actually supposed to learn/study/write down. This made the course confusing, and we fell really behind. Otherwise, he's very nice.
Colby is very caring to his student. He encourages questions and discussion from students. Every time students ask him question, he will be very patiently to answer them. If something he does not know, he would just honestly say "I don't know much about it".
The way he encourage students to be curious is rare. I think that is what education is missing.
Colby is a very chill and nice person. He cares about his students and answers his student's questions thoughtfully.
really chill and humble guy, knows what he's talking about and always does his best to answer students' questions and clearly explain topics during lectures. He only taught parts of biol 1620, but I felt more engaged when he taught than the other prof.
Colby is amazing! Super easy to track with and understand. You can tell he truly cares about his students and what he's teaching. Highly recommend taking a Colby Tanner class!
Colby is amazing he showed up to class the first day wearing cargo pants and a t-shirt and my friend and I knew we'd like him. He's a good lecturer and has a great personality. The work isn't difficult. Just pay attention and do the pre and post test stuff. Would recommend.
Very cool and understanding guy
Genuinely one of the best professors I have learned from. His lectures are fun and engaging and you can tell he really cares about his students and enjoys the material and his job. He's super chill and understanding and if you're real with him he'll be real with you. 10/10 would recommend him to anyone wanting to take 1610!!!
Colby was an assistant professor so to my knowledge he didn't create any assignments or tests. He was super caring and even gave out his personal number to students so they could text him with any questions. He always made time out side of class to help students who were struggling. Overall a 5/5
Tanner is a great lecturer who cares about his students. The class itself is tough but he works hard to make sure his students are getting the help they need. Uses IClicker for attendance/participation. I believe Renee Dawson is the head of the course so Tanner didn't make any of the assignments himself, but he did a great job.
Colby has become one of my favorite professors. He cares about his students and ensures they understand the material so they do well in his class. He does not mind if you ask him questions; he is always happy to help. I would 100% recommend him for Bio!!!
After 3 years at the U, I have finally had a positive experience with a professor in STEM. He is an AMAZING teacher! He makes the classroom a positive environment, is goofy, and genuinely cares about his students. I wish I was able to have him for more bio courses!
This is a one credit lab and he treats it like one. Not too much work but the labs are interesting and he makes it engaging. He is also the nicest and open to questions and suggestions from students. So personable and easy to get along with him. If you need a bio lab credit take this!!
Fantastic teacher! His lectures were so engaging and he really cares about students. He provides so many resources outside of class if you do not understand a concept (study halls, discussions, etc). In past biology classes, I felt like I was memorizing trivia, but in this class I learned the why behind everything we were learning.
Professor Colby is the best! This was my second time taking bio 1610 and he was much better than Renee in my opinion. He does really care about his students and takes time to learn their name especially if they participate in class. He prioritizes making sure the class as a whole gets critical concepts within the course and wants everyone to pass.
Colby is a great professor. He is kind of all over the place however, he cares about his students and tries to engage them in the lesson. If you are going to take biology choose Colby.
Yes, the hype is real. Colby has a passion for teaching. He is very goofy and casual, but I think that is why he is amazing; it doesn't feel like a task to listen to him. He is great at relaying expectations on quizzes and exams and explains why each thing we learned was important/relevant. Took him again for 1620, there was no question.
I loved Colby's class so much! His lectures were engaging and he really cares about his students. Every time someone would raise their hand he asked for their name, and it really made a good impression to a 300 person lecture that he tried to learn names. I would definitely take his class again, and I wish he taught every subject!
Colby is literally the best professor I have ever had. You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches and he is always willing to answer questions and help students fully understand the subject. He is very engaged with students in the class and cares about our education.
Amazing professor, he has good lectures and easy makes them easy to understand, you will have to study a lot but he provides so many resources and prepares you for the criteria on exams
Colby is definitely one of the best professors I've ever had! His lectures are entertaining and he always ensures his students understand the material. You can tell he is truly passionate about his job and he cares about your success. I would 100% take this class again, it's my favorite!
One of the best professors I've had here at the U! He genuinely cares about teaching the content and makes sure you not only understand the material but know how to apply it. He is a great person overall and I would definitely recommend taking a class from him!!
I definitely would recommend taking Colby for Biology if you need it. He cares for everyone to succeed and wants everyone to pass. The class can be hard if you're not very sciency, but he provides lots of outside resources for help. He's also willing to answer questions if you have them and is a very nice guy. I wish he taught more classes.
what a great teacher! i was in the 8am class, but i made it to every single class because of how interesting it was.His class is super engaging and interesting, you can tell that he cares about his students. this is a very work heavy course, you will have a lot of homework but trust that its super helpful and genuinely strengthens your learning.
Colby Tanner is a really fun professor and is a good teacher but the sheer amount of assignments is absurd. We had 6 assignments due during finals week and had ~80 assignments throughout the year. The content was nowhere near hard enough to need so many things to do. This class would have been much better without so many assignments
This guy is amazing! He is so understanding and helpful and actually cares about his students. There is usually a small point quiz you take at home before and after class and a drawing assignment after every class too. About 6 real quizzes/exams throughout the actual class. Super great guy.
He is a great professor and is very passionate about what he teaches. Hes very funny and gets to know the students. This class has so many assignments. There are multiple quizzes, and other assignments due every week. attendance is mandatory since he has questions in class that count towards your grade. overall i recommend this professor.
Colby is the BEST. I cannot recommend him enough. He deeply cares about his students and wanted us to succeed. That's why our class fell a little behind, because he realized we weren't catching onto some of the topics. He spent extra time to go over them. I would say this class is achievable. Just aim for understanding rather than memorizing!
If you have to take biology and you know you're going to have a difficult time, take Colby's class! This is a very difficult class with so many assignments, but Colby explains things in a way that's easy to understand. Read the provided text and get high scores on pre/post class and DTLs and worksheets because they add up.
Colby was a great professor! Despite attendance being mandatory, he made lectures interesting and fun. He didn't mind answering questions in the middle of lecture, this is where his knowledge and passion for biology really showed. Bio 1610 is a time consuming class, but if you're going to take it, take it with him!
Colby is a fantastic teacher and mentor. Wish I could take more classes with him. If you show up every day and make an effort to study, you will be guaranteed a good grade.
Colby is an awesome professor. It's clear he knows and has a passion for the material. He puts in effort to know his students, super understanding, and will help you get any grade you want. If you're taking BIOL, don't miss out on Colby. The comments mentioning lots of homework is true, but they're quick and easy so don't let that turn you away!
Colby was the best teacher I have had through all of my education. He cares so much about his students and it really shows, he seems to do whatever it takes to make sure the class understands. He does a lot of drawing on the board and is not just about memorization, but actually understanding. I always looked forward to going to this class.
Colby is an exceptional professor with a top-notch course design. You'll have to do consistent work throughout the semester, and the payoff is less cramming for tests. He teaches you how to be a better student. The variety of creative assignments translate to a deeper understanding of core concepts. One of the most gifted instructors out there.
Very caring and provides lots of resources.
Gives great lectures and understands the curriculum very well. He and his TA's are also very willing to work with you.
Colby is awesome! He's obviously very passionate about the subject he teaches and made everything very interesting and intuitive to learn.
The quizzes are similar to the tests. He is clear about what to study and there is plenty of help outside of class. For bio 1610, great course.
Colby is an amazing professor! Biology is generally a hard class but he made it super easy to follow the lectures and understand. He also provides MANY opportunities to review and ask questions. This class is homework heavy but they are small assignments I found super helpful!
Great professor that understands what a 1 credit class should be and utilized information that was very applicable to class. I learned more essential information from this lab that was usable on the test than I did in class. Awesome teacher
Biology can be tough to learn, but Colby makes it easier to understand through his lectures and help resources he provides which really helped me succeed in his class by getting an 80% average on quizzes and exams. He really does care about your learning. If you need this class, take it from him.
This class would have been so much harder if I didn't have tanner. You will have about 5 assignments a week, but they are pretty easy. I recommend going to office hours one a week.
Trust me, everyone. He's the professor you all need, Colby's fantastic. He will heavily emphasize the points you will be tested on and implore those to attend discussions, out-of-lecture resources, etc. He's more than willing to assist you when needed. I have nothing more to say, he's kind, funny, and the best professor I've had at the university.
Colby is a great teacher, he made the class very fun. Attendance is mandatory but you get 1 drop on your lecture grade and 2 on your discussion because he knows life happens. There are a lot of assignments but they're not too hard. Class can be bit boring but other times can be really engaging. Colby cares about the students and makes it fun.
Professor Tanner is by far one of my favorite professors. He is passionate about what he is teaching and gives SO many resources to be able to succeed. There are a lot of TA's to help in the class as well as review sessions and mock exams. There is a lot of homework but it is not time consuming and fairly straight forward.
Great teacher. I took the 8 am class in order to have him as my teacher and it was worth it. There are a lot of assignments with Magraw-Hill, but they aren't bad at all. He does take attendance as part of your grade and most learning happens in class, so go to class. If you do the assignments/reading and go to class you will do just fine.
I chose Colby as my biology professor because his name sounded cool, and guess what? His name is cool, but so is he! Colby makes biology fun and engaging, breaking concepts down in a digestible way. While there's a lot of homework, he reminds us of deadlines and shares tips to help us succeed. He is just a chill guy.
Colby Tanner is my all time favorite professor. He cared about each student and his lectures were always helpful while being entertaining. If you really want to learn biology, take from him.
Lectures were well explained however sometimes were fast paced. Great professor and makes a very difficult class easier to succeed. There is a good amount of work every week, however most homework is completion points. Exams and quizzes were difficult but manageable. Take lots of notes and study weekly rather than just before exams.
Colby was a great professor for BIOL 1610, he really made difficult concepts much easier to grasp. The PowerPoints in class are super helpful and be sure to take notes on those, and there were iClicker questions periodically in class for attendance points. He's such a nice and cool guy.
Colby is a cool guy but is an ineffective professor. Most first-year students like him because he treats them as 2-year-olds and dumbs concepts down to a 1+1=2 level. Anyone hoping to learn useful information will be disappointed, class is frequently a waste of time and unorganized. He seems more interested in being liked than promoting learning.
Awesome professor, I really enjoyed this class! Colby is super interesting, and you learn a lot from his lectures.
Colby Tanner is a great professor. You can tell he cares for his students and he wants you to succeed. His class was super fun.
He was super nice! One time i emailed him at 11 pm and he answered me by 12 literal LIFE SAVER. He was also super funny
Colby is the best, legit one of the most engaging professors at the U and is super accessible if something comes up last minute. He is there for his students and it shows, everyone loves him.
Colby is awesome! He's so funny and approachable. I love how his lab actually felt like a 1-credit lab. The labs were easy and fun. It's a good supplement/review if you're taking the physiology lecture simultaneously. As someone who doesn't usually like group projects, I enjoyed the one at the end.
Colby was a great professor all around, very chill and friendly! He made the concepts clear, but I give him a 4 because he went through some of the harder concepts a little fast for me. However, going to the discussions and office hours will help with understanding. He is very open to helping and often sits at the back of office hours/discussions.
Colby is a great guy. His biggest strength is his ability to make you understand concepts you knew nothing about beforehand. To be fair, the class material is extremely easy. Sit in the front row! You will have a great time
Chiller. Talks fast though.
Amazing professor, great sense of humor and very intellectual as a person himself. Lectures are actually interesting. Do the homeworks and go to discussion they are valuable. Find friends to study with and you will do good. This class is very broad but gives you a great introduction to biology as a science. You can also do clickers in bed if u sick
Literally the best professor I've ever taken at the U. If you take Bio 1610 take Colby.
colby is so amazing
If you take BIO1610, take it with Colby! I learned so much and the content was easy to digest in lectures and it was very clearly outlined what we needed to know. Also, he is the most whimsical person you will ever meet so lectures were always interesting.
Genuinely one of my favorite professors i've ever had. He made me excited to learn and want to go to class. 2nd time taking this class bc the 1st time the professor was the worst! 1000% take 1610 w/ Colby if u can! Aside from learning a lot, being around colby was always so refreshing as he was a good reminder to me to not take life too seriously.
My absolute favorite professor I've had at the U so far. Insane aura, amazing lectures, and so so so compassionate and understanding. I would actually pay money to rate higher than 5 stars. If you're debating, this is your sign. Take from Colby!!!
Great professor. His lectures can sometimes be long winded. But the content is interesting. The assignments and quizzes line up very similarly to the tests. As long as you turn in your assignments and pay attention in class you will do well.
Before I start, I want to mention that I was a senior with Biology major. I took this class to replace my AP credits. The things Colby teach in this class was a foundation for upper division classes. It is not too deep, but covers the wide area in biology. Even though this class has enormous amount of "homeworks", I think it's worth it. Easy exams.
Colby is so good at his job. Easy to understand if you pay attention in class. Make sure you show up to lectures and actively engage with his lessons. Easy A if you apply yourself.
I took this lab with Colby and he is really nice and chill. The lab is straightforward and you work on the projects each time with your group. Nothing was hard just sometimes time consuming. Overall he is the best to take for a lab credit. He understands that a 1 credit lab shouldn't be tough. I highly recommend his section.
Even at 8 a.m., he was enthusiastic and engaging with his students and the material. If you commit to studying the material, attend mock exams, ask for help from teaching assistants, and actively participate in class, you should do well. While there is a substantial amount of material to cover and homework to complete, it is manageable.
Teaches it clearly
I really enjoyed the class I took with Colby Tanner. It was my first class in university and he made the process super easy and engaging. would highly recommend anyone to take his class.
Colby is SUCH a good teacher. The way he lectures and tells the stories of basic biology is so accessible and makes things easy to understand and remember. Homework was never hard because I remembered things! He's really fun, super accessible and easy to get a hold of if you need something. Super super glad I took his class.
funny and come to class or u wont understand the material
Seriously the best bio teacher out there. Yes, it's a lot of homework but that repetition just leads to understanding. Attendance is not mandatory but you should definitely go to every lecture, he makes biology so easy to learn and literally gives you answers to exam questions in lecture. Loved this class so much.
Colby was seriously such a refresher coming into college. Great lectures, and the extra homework is honestly just helpful, so use it as a tool!
This professor was extremely difficult to reach, even when I had other faculty reach out after I got a response, he was not reliable throughout the semester and did not respond well to asking for help. I would not take a class with this professor again.
Colby was a very fun and entertaining professor. He made long lectures engaging and made sure that you understood what he was teaching. He shows true passion for what he teaches and for his students to grow in their education.
Colby has been one of my favorite professors. I found his lectures generally pretty easy to follow, and he is always open to questions. He is very clear about what will be on a quiz or exam and he makes it really easy to earn points with assignments. As long as you show up and pay attention in lectures you should be fine.
I love Colby Tanner. His class was really interesting and he is a good speaker. He cares about his students and responds to emails extremely fast. As long as you come to class, participate in iClickers, do all the assignments, and study well enough for exams, you will get a guaranteed A.
Colby is a great teacher especially as a freshman with this being my first big lecture hall class. He keeps lectures engaging and interesting and is very funny. The difficulty of tests is fair as long as you pay attention to lectures, and I barely needed to study to get an A. The assignments he has us do online are also really helpful.
hes a chiller. just do your assignments and youll be fine. the course builds on itself so dont get behind. dont use AI to do ur assignments for you. if you just actually do the assignments you lowk dont need to study. he gives you quizzes before the test that are similar to the test.
Super easy class if you pay attention and do the assignments!
Colby's class was the best part of my first semester. His class makes a lot of sense. There is quite a bit of homework, but they're short and mostly graded off of completion, so no stress if you get problems wrong. His exams are completely lecture based, and he doesn't try to trick you; in fact, he gives you the answers to the exams in class.
Amazing professor and TA's. This class im sure is easy if you've take AP bio i didnt and still did fine. Theres a lot of busy work but its all worth it to better understand material. Very easy guy to talk to and enjoys teaching. When you're in a discussion class and think you arent learning move to another PLEASE helped me a bunch.
Colby is a fantastic professor who does a great job conveying the information.
interesting guy
Colby is literally as great and easy of a professor as it gets. He really is as chill as they come, especially for the bio department cuz the other bio professors are lowkey garbage unless it's Naina Phadnis. Colby and Naina are the best in the business. The class is hard work but very much doable. I recommend Colby everytime.
Colby was great, Class is really not hard if you go to class and pay attention and do your homework. chiller
If he was a woman, he would be disliked more than he is. I went to all office hours, did all of my assignments, did tutoring, and still got a 70% on the final. I had difficulty in the class with the quizzes and exams all semester. He explains like he expects you to know what he is talking about. The TA's are better. PREPARE FOR A LOT OF ASSIGNMENTS
He has to be one of the best professors in the entire university. He has this many 5 stars for a reason and they are well deserved. Seriously, do yourself a favor and take this class with Colby. If its full, pay someone to drop it so you can take their spot. And if you have to, pay them a good amount, it'll be the best decision you make.
He's very patient and willing to work with students regardless of situation; discussion meetings are mandatory and the lectures are not, but I would recommend going to the lectures anyway because he's funny and makes the material interesting. His class was the first that I didn't think the lectures were a waste of time.
The professor is great and chill. Homework isn't too bad, about an hour each, due weekly but it really helps for exams. He clearly tells you what to focus on, so if you pay attention and do the work, this class can be an easy A.
COLBY IS THE BEST! I can say for sure he is one/if not, the ONLY professor that truly cares about the success of his students. He is VERY accommodating and will work with you through any circumstance and provide support if a student is struggling. He loves honesty from students even if you hate the class! Such a chill guys and deserves a raise.
Colby is THE BEST! His tests are fair and not very hard. Study and review what he says to and you'll be good. Lot's of weekly assignments, do assignments and go to the lectures. Very fair class, just show up and work. He cares about students.
