very great teacher. great tests reviews.
He is a graet teacher. Knows how to teach you so you understand it. It is not an easy class but he gives very detailed test reviews. Would recommend.
A lot of disappointed drop-offs after first term-test. This class is waste of time and money - can't learn anything from him. You are on your own. Stingy on grades on the top of all.
If you can stay awake, he's fairly easy to follow and teaches the materioal well. He will not work with you on grades or schedule difficulty, and will make you feel like an idiot for asking questions.
He is a good teacher. It is a hard class. He is very good at explaining things and is willing to help you if you ask. He doesn't have alot of personality but is one of the best math teachers at this school. Gives good reviews for the test.
Does a great job explaining concepts. His tests are difficult, but fair. He has very detailed and effective test reviews. Would definately recommend.
makes math easy. but... he might trip you up on his tests from time to time
Does give very good reviews for the tests, but I couldn't not understand anything that happened in between the reviews. Others seemed to do fine, but I didn't like the way he tought. Didn't seem to care about students, just there to teach and go home.
Avoid him at all costs!
His reviews will prepare you for the tests. I passed the tests and didn't really learn anything. If you don't mind passing without learning anything, he's the guy to take it from.
He is very boring and you can tell that he doesn't want to be teaching. If you can stay awake, he explains things well. However, he hates questions.
the math department sucks
Wow! what a depressing loser. He could not care less about you your probles or life in general. I'm supprised that he hasnt killed himself. Its like you have to twist his LAZY arm to get him to help you. Then he makes you fell dumb for asking so you wont bug him again. Its like he's to LAZY to even want to talk. What cave did he crawl out of.
Great Teacher, will not let you pass by doing nothingj, have to work for grade. Willing to help students on a personal basis after class on his time. Test reviews are great, highly recommend for anyone who wants to learn.overall.
Man, he was not very helpful. He wouldn't follow you up. He doesnt care how I delay i go. Recommened not to take him!
If I had to take him again I wouldn't complain. Only math teacher I've had that has multiple choice questions on the exams. He gave me an A when I deserved an A-. Comes off with a somewhat nonchalant attitude, but I think he actually cares about the students progress.
he's the easiest teacher in the math department do all of your assignments and fail every test you will still get a c he understands that not everyone gets math and all he wants to see is effort on your side to justify the grade his personality is very dry and laid back but don't let this get in the way because he does want to help
most boring lectures i've had and hard to learn from. doesn't work with students much, and is a little weird. but easy - once you finaly understand the math being in the math lab for hours. first teacher i've ever had to use the math lab tutors for.
I found his class to be a little boring 1) because it was a math class and 2) his personality is a little wierd with a very dry sense of humor. however, the class was very easy and layed back. I would take his class again.
Excellent Teacher!! I had trouble with the previous math classes I've taken, but I understood everything he taught very well. He answers all questions very thoroughly, even in his emails. Highly recommend this teacher!
His grading is very fair.
He was an alright teacher. He was not very easy. I kind of liked his class, he teaches okay.
He was not helpful in teaching new math principles
This teacher was crystal clear in his lectures and letting you know what is important for his tests. Math is usually not easy for anyone, but if you take the time to listen to him and do ALL of your homework, you will be really happy with the class.
He was a really nice guy and tried to help me understand. But he taught in a way that though I took exact notes it would have been just as effective if he was writing in Chinese! I got A's in all of my other math courses before this class but he left huge gaps in the concepts that he was teaching. He hardly gave any homework to practice concepts
wasent avalable often, kindof meen and always complaning about the book we use he thinks he will make his one or sumthen i wish him luck on that i hope the book is cheeper
For being such a fear-inspiring class he does an excellent job of teaching you the ropes. The homework is good practice for his tests. He's clear in his lectures and is always willing to walk through tough problems from the homework. I've had a lot of lousy teachers, but Brinkerhoff is is pretty decent. Highly recommended.
He is a good teacher, but he takes forever to explain concepts so I got pretty bored. He's pretty helpful if you e-mail him. make sure you go to class though because he gives surprise quizzes. They are so easy, you just take the answers from your homework, so just go to class, do your homework, and study for tests.
For Elementary Math teachers he is the best professor you could register for. Don't get anyone else. He really wants you to pass and he gives you points for hw and quizzes. I recommend him for Math 2010 and 2020, but you still need to stay caught up on hw and study hard, its not easy but he is a very good guy and he'll help you!
EXCELLENT TEACHER! Professor Brinkerhoff came highly recommended and did not disappoint. Seriously, If you can try to get him for whatever math class you take. He cares and will help you as many times as it takes without out making your feel stupid. Also, if you email him a question he will promptly send you a detailed email back. HIGHLY RECOMMEN
His tests were hard, but he made sure we learned the stuff. Good teacher.
I actually really enjoyed this class alot!
I am a straight A student...received an E which I found out equals an F. I am not a good test taker and when I went to talk to him about it to see if there was other options to receive credit-he said no. He told me test are worth approx. 90% of your grade...quizzes and homework 10%...yeah. I think there might be a teacher with a better grading syst
Great teacher! If didn't get an A you didn't do two things:1. go to class 2. do the homework. Math is math, and those two things are a must.He gives you the questions that are on the test so it is easy to study and do well on them. If you get stuck on a problem on the homework you can email him and he answers your question really fast. Great Man
I took him during high school through the ednet program. He was really boring, so I rarley actually listened to the lecture, I wouldn't even have come if the school didn't make it mandatory. Just read the book, do the homework, and study for the tests you'll be fine.
Is occasionally witty in a dry, mathy way but generally teaches in a very monotone style so that it is hard to stay focused. He does a great job of answering student emails on math questions though which is great for students who don?t like to ask questions in class.
He is quick to respond with email and easy to work with as far as grades. I thought it was a pretty easy class until the final. It was completely ridiculous. You are not allowed a calculator in the class and have to compute odd fractions and large numbers in the two hour time limit. Rough
I took him as a high school ednet student. He is extremely monotone, terrible at lecturing and not that helpful. He requires has homework basically everyday but the bulk of your grade depends on test with about 15 multiple choice and then 2 show your work problems. The test are very difficult, no calculator ever allowed.
I love comments about how you are an A student but can't take tests. You can't be an A student without passing tests. His tests are easy if you listen to his review. He tells you EXACTLY what to study. Is he boring? Yes! Math is boring. I don't expect him to dance around like school house rock. He is a very good teacher.
Quite possibly the worst professor at UVU. He refuses to work with you if you have schedule conflicts or with your grade. He is monotone and I learned more from the math lab than from him.
This class was boring. I usually like math and can understand what is going on, but when I took it from him it just seemed like pure memorization. 30+ trig identities I had to memorize with no idea how to derive them or how they work. The homework is really easy, but the tests are insane. And did I mention that this class was really really boring?
The most dull professor I've ever had. Very hard to stay focused on the lectures. Seems to be annoyed by questions. The worst part about the class is the TIMED tests. I spent hours in the math lab to ensure I was clear but it didn't matter!!! If you're rushed through a test your going to make mistakes. I don't recommend him to ANYONE.
Excellent teacher. He made a difficult subject much easier. I wish I had him for my 1050 class and I might have learned something. I never felt like he was trying to make us feel stupid and I went to him several times after class and he helped me. Always answered every homework question someone asked. Highly recommend.
The good: He is extremely willing and available to help out and answer questions (even ones that last an hour). Never made any of us feel stupid. The Bad:The final was super hard, and he is not willing to budge on schedule conflicts unless you provide a doctors note. He also spends time explaining what NOT to do instead of what I really need to kno
I liked this teacher, he will break it down step by step for you so that you can get what to do next. He is not boring like other comments have said he was. They just played to much as use math as a class to sleep in. He is VERY CLEAR in his teaching I would tell everyone to take him for math. Helps you with any question.
I really liked this teacher. He would go over questions from the homework from the night before and when he had quizes they were often covered from those questions. If you pay attention he makes jokes all the time they are just dry so if you have that sense of humor you will love this class. He gave you just enough homework to grasp the concept.
I'll keep this short. Do not take this guy. The tests are timed,he teaches as if he is teaching the principle for the 1000th time that day, and seems annoyed to be in the class. There is a lot of hw, which is normal in math. Just do yourself a favor and stay away from him if you can avoid him!
He shows no interest in helping even though he is the department chair. He doesnt care what your impression of the school is or how hard you have to try to get the simplest things done. He acts very irritated when you go to ask him a question. You're the department chair we are going to ask you questions! get over yourself!!!!!!!!!
Brinkerhoff was amazing! If you want to actually learn stuff, then disregard the comments about his personality and how he comes off to the students. He is such a good teacher and he is SO clear about what he's teaching. He really knows his stuff and if you do the homework and pay attention, this class becomes way easier than you think.
I took math 1050 from him twice. The first time I did not get him at all and recieved a low grade. But the second time I applied myself better and got a good grade. He is very boring so try your hardest to pay attention and take good notes. His tests aren't super hard if you do the study guide. Use the math lab as much as possible!
Mr. Brinkerhoff is a great teacher. He gives examples in class that are just like the ones he gives on the test. As long as come to class and apply yourself you will do fine. He is a teacher that you need to attend the class. But if you attend class and do the work you will do fine in the class. Not an easy A. But he is fair, helpful, and cares.
If you go to class and pay attention you will do fine. Tests are ok. Very boring professor but if you force yourself to pay attention he knows his stuff.
Not willing to help no matter how many times you approach. Asked for outside resources and he would not offer any. Very boring. Schedules test review but doesn't help you review. Generally seems to dislike students, teaching, and life.
Why he went into academia is beyond me. He always seemed to be annoyed with students, teaching, and even life. Take the class from any other professors!
He knows his stuff. He is helpful during his office hours. Seems bored when teaching. Explains too fast in class lecture. Tests are timed 50 min. If you are good at math and can look at a problem and solve it without much thought you will do well. If you struggle at all you will fail. You loose points for every min. you go over on the test.
He does not take attendance but has random quizzes which are just the answers to the previous nights homework. Not too much homework. He is very monotone and seems very bored while teaching but does explain things well.
Explains everything very thoroughly. Not the most interesting class, but he obviously loves math and is VERY good at teaching it. I have never done well in math and I got an A in his class.
Here's how he does test reviews: "Any questions about the test?" I'll say one good thing about him: unlike other Math professors at UVU, he can actually speak English.
Boring.. i went in for help often and i still failed the class. He's a pretty hard grader.
I hate how the tests are only 50 minutes long. You will lose points if you go over. Instead of homework, he gives quizzes from the homework assignments which can actually work for you if you are lazy and want to get a passing grade without doing a lot of homework. His tests are kind of tricky. Overall he was good.
He is a bad man and likes to see his students fail. He will not help you with anything, i went into his office at least 20 times throughout the semester asking for help and he blew me off every time. I did pass but barely. I do not recommend this class.
The worst administrator or advisor I have had the misfortune of dealing with. He attempts to use his position as a counselor to hurt other students & their academic goals instead of helping them. i.e. Instead of helping post-bacc.'s take needed courses at their level, he coerces them to start from "square" one. Likely a sadist personality.
Brinkerhoff is my Math advisor. Any time I go in to see him he blows me off or sends me to someone else. His refusal to help me has resulted in me taking classes that don't apply to my major, taking them at the wrong times, etc. Acts super annoyed that I would even dare ask him for help every time I've spoken to him. Terrible trait in an advisor.
He is a nice teacher, he has his own way of teaching sometimes its easier sometimes its not. he will tell you whats on the test so you know exactly what to study. he's monotone but still cracks a few jokes every now and then
Good person but teaches easy problems compared to the homework and test.
This professor is very nice, and if you come into his office he is there to help you out, however, his tests are very hard, and there is little to no "mercy" if you get behind. If you struggle with math, do not take this class from him, you will not do well. His 5 tests throughout the semester are pretty easy, but the final is very difficult.
Extremely difficult... If you can take another professor than I would suggest doing so. His average grade is a C-!!?? Not helpful, completely confusing, and tests are very unfair and are timed.
I really liked his class. He has a dry sense of humor, which I think most people didn't understand. But he was extremely helpful whenever I asked for help and he doesn't grade harshly. If he sees how hard you are trying he will help you. The only thing I'd complain about is that he needs to set a higher time limit for the tests.
This professor is a nice man. He does have a dry sense of humor, but if you talk to him after class then he will make the time to answer your questions and to help you. I don't like how the tests are only 50 Min long, i find myself often having many unfinished questions, and that hurts your grade. However, the grading criteria is very unclear.
Obviously it's a math class and it sucks, but I felt like he really helped me understand the material better than most professors. He answers questions, respects students, and genuinely wants to help his students succeed. I'd recommend him to anyone who struggles with math. Show up, pay attention, do homework, study for exams and you'll be fine.
He makes a hard class easIER. It's still a hard class, but he teaches to the HW and then bases his tests from the HW classes. His tests are easy. He tells you which problems and makes the numbers more simple like 0's and 1's. Only 13 problems on every single test. The only problem is the 50 minute limit on all tests. Take this class from him though
He is a great teacher! The way he teaches is really easy to understand and he knows his stuff really well. The only problem I had with the class was the tests. His test are only 13 questions long with only 50 minutes to complete it. You basically have to rush through the test and hope you didn't make a mistake on the way.
He is a fun teacher and answers questions. But he only grades the quizzes, only 20 worth 4 points each, 5 tests, worth 72 each, and a final worth 160. I've gotten 100% on the quizzes but I struggle with the tests. No test reviews. Quizzes are answers you have from whatever assigned homework he has. Tests do not match homework. Very difficult class.
I found this class to be very frustrating. The teacher is boring and a harsh grader. If you are struggling to understand the concepts and ask him for help he isn't willing to and just tell you how many quizzes and tests you have left that could maybe help make a difference with your grade.
WORST class I have ever taken. Nothing got graded until 3 weeks before the semester ended. He never did anything on time or when he said he would upload them. Get this, there were so many problems with this class that they switched us to a different professor the last 3 weeks of the semester. DON'T take any classes from this professor!
Tests are worth almost all of your grade with a 50 minute time limit. I wish he would have had us participate more instead of just lecturing the whole time. He offers no extra credit and the homework does not relate to the coursework. Slow at grading our tests, but graded them very thoroughly and showed you your mistakes. Always got a sub when gone
If you take his class, don't plan on knowing your total grade until the end of the semester. By far the laziest professor I have ever had. He doesn't make lessons, he just takes examples from the textbook and takes weeks to grade tests. There are no study guides and he is hardly willing to work with or help students.
you just don't want to take from this guy. He's monotone, boring, and doesn't make things interesting at all. Half the time, he gives examples in class that aren't included in the homework so you have to figure it out. If you come to class, it's hard to follow, if you zone out for a second, you're lost. Makes it hard to stay awake and focus.
Average of 4 hrs of homework a night. Test every week. He is extreme.
This class is hard! First off his lectures help very minimal. You are probably better off by not showing up and just studying instead. He does not go over the question of the problem he is working on so it is just a lot of numbers on the board without knowing what method we are doing. WARNING!! also need do do 60 hrs of online work!!
Incredibly monotone, a lot of lecturing in class. No individual help at all, if that's how you prefer to learn this is not a good class to take. Tests were 10-15 questions and worth 80 points with the harder and longer questions being worth more points. If you don't do well on the tests, you won't pass. If I zoned out for a minute I was lost.
This class truly was awful. I have always been good at math and I struggled. He only lectures and offers no individual help. He talks in circles and you only get more and more confused. At the beginning of the semester, I would go into tests feeling confident and leave completely confused. (Also, he is extremely monotoned) Not my cup of tea.
I found Colin to be quite a funny teacher in a cynical manner. His approach isnt the most exciting but he surprisingly teaches the material very well and much better than the confusing textbook. His tests are easy if you do all the homework questions. Probably the most annoying part of the course was having to complete the ALEKS homework.
Very lecture heavy to say the least. If you miss class, be prepared to teach whatever concept to yourself from the textbook. Very monotone and it made such a boring class even more unbearable. Dreaded every single class.
Worst math teacher I've ever had. It sounds like he is annoyed when he is teaching. rambles a lot and then rushes through the problem 'for the sake of time.' I felt like he assumed we knew more than we did, when for me this was the first time seeing some of the material. His tests are timed, which the way he had the class set up was inconvenient.
I do not have enough words to describe how horrible Brinkerhoff conducts this course. New concepts are introduced ON THE TEST. Most of my class fail his exams and he wont curve them. DO NOT take this course with this professor. His lectures are boring and he doesnt explain things thoroughly. During lecture, he only does examples from the textbook
This is the hardest math class I've ever taken. I had to work insanely hard to get a decent grade. I never took MATH1050, I was only placed in because of my ACT score. I've always been good at math but this was a ridiculously hard course. His lectures do a good job at teaching new concepts, but you have to study VERY hard for the tests.
To begin with, he didn't even cover everything in class, with new material often appearing on the tests, and he is impossible to reach outside of class. Tests are also heavily weighted. He also takes a long time to grade anything. At the end of the semester he covered even less because we "ran out of time", but we were still tested on was left.
This dude only goes off the textbook and doesn't teach. The tests had material that was completely new. I learned more from Khan Academy.
