Yeah, he's hard, but his tests are fair. He's either covered everything on the exams or the book mentions them. Put the effort into his class and you'll do well.

watch out for amino acids
hardest professor i've ever had.
he makes chem a lot harder that it has to be...he's also hard to understand
He is somewhat difficult, but not the hardest teacher at Drake. He does a pretty good job explaining things and prepares you well. If you devote time and effort to the class, and still get a bad grade, you are just not very smart.
my god this guy is a hard guy listen to everything and anything if he talks about it once for a minute and never metions it again it will be on the test
I had trouble in his class but I think he is a fair teacher. The classes are weed-out classes, there are suppose to be easy.
His accent makes it very easy to understand what he is saying because he speaks very clearly
He seems like a cool teacher, but a little boring...
He's pretty hard, it's easy if you've already taken AP Chem in HS. Make sure to do the practice problems, repetition works. He's easy to talk to if you go get help in office hours. The irish accent can get to be pretty bad, but he's an intelligent man.
Good.
The reason I left Drake.
Very diffucult. Always has questions on the test that are meant to trick you. Be ready to study if your in his class.
horrible...worse thing ever...never take cairns! he will ruin your GPA. Take someone else no matter what!!!
hes a nice guy, hes very understanding, his tests are hard i must admit but you do have to work well sort of to get atleast a B.
He's the reason why I'll probably have to go to summer school...
I would not recommend this prof for Chem 1 OR 2 for students who are concerned with GPA (i.e. PreMed, Dental, Pharmacy). Exams are not fair representations of the material covered in class or in the text. They are long and the average is about 60%. If you need a good GPA, take Chem 1 and ESPECIALLY Chem 2 with another prof.
He was an awful teacher, I wouldn't recommend him for those who are at a average learning rate. Plus thanks to him I have to go to summer school
The reason I am changing majors....'nuf said.
Cairns is funny and a nice guy, but impossible. His tests are an awful representation of what you learn in class. His questions are made to trick you and practically no one gets As. Biggest mistake I made was taking him again for Chem 2!!
Horrible Professor. He made everything complicated and confusing. His tests were unnecessarily difficult and nearly impossible to get above a C on. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS!!!
I found his class good and he has a clarity in teaching. But you do have to have a previous knowledge of in this subject if you want to take his classes
There have been a lot of complaints about Cairns just because he wants you to know your material. You have to actually study to get a good grade. Chemistry is supposed to weed out students who aren't meant for the major so put in the effort to get a good grade. He is very accomodating to help you if you get lost. Just make sure to go to class!
The tests usually don't cover what he talked about in class so you have to read the book! Class isn't mandatory, but it's usually a good idea to go.
do not take cairns. he is horrible at explaining material and is very confusing. tests don't reflect what he does in class, assigns for homework, or recommends for practice problems. throws a random problem from the book onto tests...READ. go in for help as much as you can, because he likes to try to help, but is a bad explainer.
NEVER AGAIN
awful, awful, awful. i can't even describe to you how bad of a teacher he is. he intentionally makes this class impossible to succeed in. his tests are even more impossible! for the sake of your future and gpa DON"T TAKE HIM!
The man is a genius, he doesn't know how to teach well. Irish accent. Hard to understand. Tests are very hard. Will help you out if you go talk to him. I was failing and he raised my grade to a C because I came in once a week to talk with him.
very difficult tester, will test on things he didn't talk about in class, and will try to trick you on a test, and will test on very very specific things he mentions, don't miss a single day of class.
DO NOT TAKE CAIRNS
You have to take great notes and read the text. Plus you usually will have to go to his office to get extra help.
You will definitely learn a lot if you work really hard but remember, there is no easy A! I think Cairns is too smart to teach undergraduate course..
Cairns is a genuis! Sci. and Soci. was a good FYS. Harder than most FYS classes, but you learn a lot. Assigns a good deal of readings and papers, but most were interesting. He's not afraid to change the syllabus to add current events, which is a good thing. Take Cairns for your FYS if possible; you'll learn a from him.
I agree, cairns is too smart to teach undergrad... he assumes you should understand something confusing and moves on. the material he covers must be explained because books to a poor job of explaining if you dont already know what your doing... if your not used to what i believe is a thick irish accent, you will struggle in this class guarenteed!
Great Class, very interesting. He's a great guy and extremely helpful. Take his FYS if you can. For some students he may seem hard, but if you get to know him and actually pay attention in his classes and show interest he will help you get to where you want to be.
Do not take. I took AP chemistry in high school and got an A. I am struggling in this class to keep a B. Do not follow the PLNs. Write your own notes otherwise you are doomed.
Horrible teacher do not take.
horrible
You dont have to, but should go to class everyday. Otherwise, the tests and material are going to seem really hard. However, if you do go to class, take your own notes, and study some, you should have no problem. His tests are not too bad. They do however test on things he specifically says in class, which is why going to class is important.
Tough teacher. The first test will be easy for you, but don't be fooled because the other three will be a lot more tough. Jumps around a lot during lecture and is very hard to understand so you will spend a lot of time learning everything on your own. If possible, take a different professor for gen chem because this class will hurt your GPA.
By far the toughest teacher I have encountered during my educational career. If you want to do well in his class, you'll have to study the text thoroughly AND pay attention to the seemingly unrelated tangents he takes during lecture. You'll be expected to apply concepts in ways not discussed in class. Avoid if you're not a rock-solid chem student.
Cairns is sometimes hard to understand and he will not go over any examples with you unless you go to his Friday afternoon SI sessions. His tests are quite difficult but in the end he curves which helps the majority of the class not fail.
This professor is extremely smart but does not know how to teach. I took AP chemistry senior year so I thought the class would be an easy blow. It wasn't. He makes everything extremely difficult when it is really easy. His exams are extremely painful because lecture and exam have no relevance to each other. I recommend taking a different professor.
His tests are about concepts covered once or possibly never during class. Attending his SI is absolutely necessary but I have chem lab for his class at that time. His tests always cover the exceptions to every rule you have learned. Im currently getting one of the best grades in class with a 77%. YEAH
A good, yet difficult teacher. Go to class, pay attention, go to the si sessions. This is a lot of work, but if you do this succesfully, you will be fine. Don't expect to breeze by, you will learn chemistry and science like no other, when finished with his class.
A great, yet difficult teacher. Go to class, pay attention, go to the SI sessions. This is a lot of work, but if you do this successfully, you will be fine. Don't expect to breeze by, you will learn chemistry and science like no other, when finished with his class.
I went from getting a 5 on the AP Chem test to getting almost a C in his class. He is ridiculous most of the time. He is a nice guy though. TAKE HENDERSON! If u miss 8 on cairns test you get a 60 if u miss 8 on Hendersons tests you get a 92. its so screwed up
Cairns is amazing. I almost got a D on my first exam...then I tried really hard, read the book, went to his SI sessions, went into his office hours for help, did practice problems, and studied some but I learned so much and I got an A for the class! If you make the effort, he will definitely get you to where you want to be :)
He is an incredibly hard teacher, but he is extremely smart. He wants his students to learn, and because of that, he is extremely helpful. I took AP Chem last year, and I still feel that I learned a lot of new things from him. You have to go to SI sessions and go in for help, so it's a lot of work. It is so worth it in the end though.
Too smart for undergrad. He's a great guy and you really learn a lot, but his tests are quite difficult. Keep up with the reading and go to SI sessions and you'll get a good grade.
Awful. Just plain awful. Take a different professor. If you can't, Good Luck.
Hard class. Nice Guy. All tests are multiple choice; be prepared to pick apart the questions to find out what he means! Heard people got an 80% first semester and still got an A. Got an A second semester with a 86%. Just go in an ask him anything; make sure to have your questions ready for him!
Way too smart for undergrad! He is a horrible professor! He is the worst I have ever had at Drake.
I am a pre-pharm major that's decently smart, and I thought this class was pretty tough..If you go in and talk to him he might bump you up but try to avoid this professor
Collin is the man when it comes to teaching chemistry. He is exceedingly helpful with outside of class office hours and weekly study sessions. The thick Irish accents only adds to the classes variety. Because of it, it should be a multicultural experience too...in all seriousness you have to try.
Collin is a great professor and really helpful guy. I had an easier professor first semester and am doing better with Cairns this semester. Plus, it doesn't hurt that he's Irish and likes to wear all denim outfits to class! Bonus!
Cairns is a nice guy and cares a lot about his students. He is very smart and therefore expects his students to pick up on everything he teaches the first time. I spent a lot of time reteaching myself the material outside of class. Tests are pretty straight forward.
Horrible teacher! He cannot bring down his explanations to a freshman undergrad level! He was no help when I went into his office! He just assumed you knew stuff (like HS physics, which i did not take!) Avoid him!!
If you had previous chemistry exprience his class is interesting because of his unique way of explaining concepts. If you haven't had previous classes such as AP Chem. DO NOT TAKE
This class comes down to how well you take notes in his lectures and how much time you spend practicing. Its as hard as you make it like any class. I think he is easy to approach, but most people are intimidated by him. if you try you should at least get a B.
Really nice guy and very funny. One of my favorite professors at Drake. Very very difficult though.
Cairns is very nice and funny. He is a genius, which is his downfall in teaching a first year chemistry course. His tests are very tricky. He explains simple concepts in a very complex manner, which gets really confusing. You have to know/teach yourself the material before lecture because you will be list otherwise. Good luck.
I had taken plenty of science classes in high school and enjoyed them, however, this professor made it miserable. I felt so defeated after leaving class & especially exams. He is very intimidating to go to talk to, does NOT prepare you for the tests nor does he seem to care that his students are all failing! I wish I could've picked better or known
Avoid Cairns at all costs. This class is difficult enough as it is and Cairns does little to help you understand the concepts in class. Anything I learned in this class was from the book.
Very nice guy, very hard professor. Read the book before going to class and his lectures will make sense. Tests are very difficult, but if you prepare well by going through his PLN's, going through practice questions in the book, and going into his office hours you can succeed.
Cairns' class is difficult if you have little chemistry experience. He can be condescending when you ask him questions. He really goes out of his way to help his students, though, and is a pretty nice guy.
Cairns is an intelligent man and sometimes forgets this when talking with students. However, I find him very approachable. He explains things well enough in lecture, but the exams require you to go beyond this. He gives practice tests, and if you understand them you should do well. He also has an interesting sense of humor.
Dr. Cairns is a very smart person, but he is honestly too intelligent to be teaching general chemistry. You will have to teach yourself most concepts.
Professor Cairns is very difficult and will challenge you, but as a student at Drake University you shouldn't expect any less. He is always more than willing to help with office hours and will reply to emails and make personal appointments. I have had to work so hard, but have learned so much. Get ready to live and breathe chemistry.
Colin has an intimidating reputation, but is in reality a very quirky prof. He's incredibly intelligent yet willing to help his students with any questions. Great guy, sweet accent.
Don't let people scare you by saying that the class is difficult. It is, and you'll have to work hard, but it pays off. Go to office hours and SI sessions, make sure he knows your name (he'll figure out everyone's eventually.) He cares about your success, but he won't hand it to you on a silver platter. Just work hard and your grade will reflect it
His lectures can get confusing, and he tends to tangent off on things that are less important, but he at least gives an overview of the concepts you need to know. He also has weekly SI sessions that are SUPER important to go to, and his exams are very straightforward. I wouldn't say he is the easiest, but he is fair and you will learn a lot.
He isn't the lecture master to say the least. Be ready to teach yourself or go to office hours every day.
Amazing professor. Does everything to make sure you pass, gives you Lecture Notes, Practice exams, and holds sessions outside of class on his own time to discuss problem sets and help you with any questions you have regarding homework, lectures, and exams.
I don't understand why this man has such a bad reputation. Lectures teach you what you need to know, he's helpful at office hours, he gives you homework AND practice tests that are just like the tests, SI sessions give you extra practice, and he' funny! He can't even be a hard grader because tests are multiple choice and all have extra credit.
Cairns is way too smart to be teaching intro-level courses. His accent (Irish) is pretty hard to follow at 8am. If you read along, go into office hours, and go to the extra sessions you will understand the material better. He goes at a good pace during lecture.
Cairns definitely wants students to succeed. He's very approachable during office hours, but his lectures can be hard to follow at 8 am. Much outside work is needed to pass.
Such a bad teacher for a general class. Too smart for his own good. Can't understand a word he says
Cairns has a bad reputation, but it's because he has high expectations for his students. He makes you work for the grade. You must read, doing homework, and go to his supplemental review sessions (very helpful!). If you do all this, you will be satisfied with your grade. A strong background in chemistry also helps! Oh, and beware the Irish accent!
Cairns gives out really difficult tests, but in lecture he's pretty clear and is available to answer questions. He's actually a really cool guy and I would recommend taking him as your gen chem professor
Does not use any technology and rambles on the chalk board. He has the class print off lecture notes but seldom follows them.
Cairns is a nice person but too smart for his, or rather his students, own good. Tests are the majority of the grade and WILL cover material that you DO NOT go over in class. STAY AWAY FROM CAIRNS
Took Chem 1 and Chem 2 from Dr. Cairns back in 2002 and 2003. Learned as much in those classes as any classes I took in undergrad. Class was difficult, but fair. One of the academic highlights of my time at Drake were his classes. Tips for success: do the homework and prior exams several times, and study with someone who is better at chem than you.
By far the worst professor at Drake.
If you don't already have a great understanding of chemistry do not takes Professor Cairns. Although he is an incredibly smart man, he is almost too smart to understand. He moves very fast on topics with little explanation. You must put in A LOT of work to excel in his class. Steer clear.
Hard to understand in lecture. You have to do a LOT of outside work in order to pass the general chem class. Show up to class regularly, take good notes, pay attention and study hard for the exams.
Dr. Cairns is probably one of the smartest Chemistry professors at Drake. With that being said, his tests are very difficult to get an A on. He does help you out by giving lecture notes and practice tests. Unfortunately, he is very difficult to understand in class, which makes it 10x more difficult to read the book and complete hw.
Dr. Cairns's class is difficult and lectures move very quickly. You are definitely going to need to put in lots of effort outside of class if you want to do well, but this is where Dr. Cairns shines. It is extremely willing to help you outside of class and he is super accessible. He really wants you to succeed. Make sure you go to SI sessions!
Dr. Cairns is the smartest professor I have ever taken a class with. Although the tests can be difficult, you will do fine as long as you do everything he tells you to do (which is a lot). That said, having some background in chemistry would be very helpful. Going in to office hours is very important. He will give you the grade you earn.
Cairns is a very smart professor. However, his tests are very difficult since he expects students to know everything about Chemistry. It is very hard to understand him during lecture since he talks fast and will not stop for any reason. Furthermore, he does help you out by giving previous exams and notes to help you out.
The first half of the semester is mainly review and sprinkles in some new concepts. All the tests are takehome and there's homework every week. Most of it is done in groups of 2. There's a lot of information you need to look up so some of the homework takes a while. If you put in a little time each week, it's easy.
Speaks like a textbook. Very hard to follow at 8 in the morning
Dr. Cairns is one of my favorite professors I've had at Drake. He does not teach material so students pass exams, he teaches so students can have a true understanding of the material that can then be examined on. You WILL have to put in outside work, but that is the case with all the chem courses I've taken at Drake so far.
Dr. Cairns is one of the smartest individuals that I have ever met. His knowledge of chemistry supersedes that of any professor in the chemistry department. His classes are difficult, and if you don't have at least some background in chemistry it will be hard, but he knows his stuff and is willing to help you succeed.
Professor Cairns is a wonderful teacher, if you like lectures. If you do not learn by someone talking at you, then do not take this class. He really knows what he is talking about, and is always willing to help outside of class. He attempts to be funny, and if you laugh at his jokes, he will like you a lot more. I would definitely recommend Cairns.
This class is definitely a weed- out course and i highly recommend you do not take it with Cairns. He cares for his students but he is not very good at explaining concepts in a lecture setting. You will have to prepared find outside help in order to fully understand what he is trying to teach. Be prepared to study like crazy. Don't take him.
Dr. Cairns is fantastic! I had no chemistry knowledge coming into the class, so it was difficult for me. He's a genius and teaches, but not for the tests. Lecture is confusing, put in at least 4+ hours of work in every week to get at least a B. Go to all SI, do all practice Q's, ask Q's. The grade you get is the grade you get is the grade you earn!
He was never organized, pertaining to the class schedule, course materials, or lectures. He insisted questions were asked, and then was condescending with responses. I never felt prepared for the exams or problem sets. During finals week, he scheduled a problem set, take-home exam, and a final exam.
I'd love to say this was my hardest class but that'd be a lie; this class is still a nightmare though. Cairns talks so fast and expects you to be prepared well in advance for his class as if everyone is a chemist. If he knows you put in work he'll be more sympathetic during exams so make sure he knows you. If you don't already love chem you'll cry
Its a chem class so its gonna be hard if want to take the easier version of chem take it with zweir. Easier than vitha. Offers extra credit through quizzes and the HW. Tests are hard but not to difficult just read your notes and skim the textbook and you should be able to survive.
Cairns is good at giving lectures, contrary to the other chemistry teachers at Drake that teach with group work. Honestly, I learn better by lecture, so this class was good. He is super nice, so don't be afraid to ask questions. He speaks really fast and the class was very hard at first, but stick to it.
Hard class/tests but also offers a lot of resources. Go to SI sessions, read the textbook, watch khan academy, and master old tests to pass. You will REALLY have to put in the work outside of class. He has PLNs but doesn't always follow them. Best to go to office hours to understand concepts. Really nice and accessible though!
This man cannot make a sentence I can understand. Cairns does not take time to ask questions or make sure his students are understanding. Whenever someone asks a question, he gets defensive. He talks for long amounts of time about things that are not on the slides or lecture materials which makes note-taking hard. Take chem001 with someone else.
Lectures are mostly content, few examples. Cairns provides a lot of resources to supplement your learning, but does not go over many practice problems in lecture. If you learn best by being talked at, Cairns is your way to go.
Content on his exams won't match up with other professors' exams. Doesn't go over things well in class and the things he goes over, he will only go over once, good luck learning from him, I learned better using other sources than him. Hard to understand and not good at teaching a freshman/into course. Rambles about things we don't need to know.
The homework is helpful if you dont wait until the last minute and look up all the answers. Cairns is difficult and is very heavy with lecture and doesnt stay on a topic very long. He has a note guide but rarely goes in order. If you do take this class make sure to try really hard the first few exams because the last ones are very difficult.
You need to show up to class, pay attention and take extra notes than his PLNs. Attend any outside help you can as this class requires more work than 3 combined. Brilliant man who explains in so much detail it can be confusing. Accessible outside of class and really cares for his students though. Just wants success for all. Very tough class!
Cairns is a kind and funny man. His class however, is a beast. He seemingly randomly picks lecture topics, and goes way more in depth than even the internet does. The first several tests are much easier than the last ones, so work hard to do well on those. Do go to office hours, he is much less defensive there than when answering questions in class
Although this class is very difficult, I found it more beneficial than taking Zwier who relies on group work. If you pay attention, take good notes, and READ THE ONLINE TEXTBOOK, you will do just fine. He goes off on lots of tangents during class that isn't really applicable so if you zone out in class you'll be fine.
I took ap chem and was totally fine, pretty much the same content. If you didn't get a lot of chem in hs, you might struggle, but I think it's still a manageable class. Lectures can be long. Study in groups. Think conceptually instead of memorizing. Cairns is really knowledgeable and wants his students to be successful - extra credit on tests :)
second semester was definitely a notch harder than the first. test questions were a lot trickier. cairns is really accessible outside of class and approachable during his office hours, so definitely utilize those if you're confused on something. your grade will thank you if you show up to class.
I took Carins both semesters for gen chem. He is a super nice person outside of lectures and I enjoyed his office hours but his exams are graduate level. He expects you to understand the concepts when he gives one practice problem in class. His lectures aren't slideshows, it's just him standing at the front of the room talking at you.
Dr. Cairns is admittedly a harder than average professor, but he genuinely wants everyone to do well. Going to lecture is important, because he doesn't post notes, and examples in class are very important. His tests are very similar to the past, so do the homework and practice exams, and you will be fine.
He is helpful outside of class, but his exams are hard. The SI sessions are optional, but if you want any chance of understanding the material, you need to do the problems.
