The best teacher ever! Its a small class, so its very discussion oriented. He always wants to make sure youre learning and understanding and always relates it to the real world. The tests are long, but he gives all the questions ahead of time and then choses from them. Its a lot of work, but worth it and not so bad if you put in the effort.
He explains well but he makes the class really boring. He doesn't use power points so you need to take notes and study almost everything from the book. Many people failed the class. Tests are really short but really hard. Final is cumulative. A lot of material.
He is the greatest of al time. He is availabe for extra help and he explains the material well. The class by itself is rigorous, but he breaks it down the best way possible
This class is a very VERY hard class. Be ready to study your butt off if you want to get an A. Professor is awesome at explaining everything, but it's a bit fast paced. Book is mandatory, & i suggest attendance should be too. Offers extra credit & awesome curves. Only reason i got an A-, love the clicker questions for that. Has british accent = <3
The best professor ever. Took him for evolution. Tests are essay, and he covers everything you need to know for the exams in a fun, interactive class lecture. For gen students, I do DIS with him and see how concerned he is about trying to make genetics a less boring subject and he really wants his students to be successful. Best professor EVERRR!!
BEST professor ever! I've never met a professor who cares for his students as much as Dr. Hughes does. He tries really hard to make sure everyone understands the material and participates in class. As long as you study and try to get involved in discussions, you will do well! Take him instead of Binninger for Genetics, too!
He is so bad at teaching! explains easy stuff for like 1.5 hrs then in the last 30min will attempt to explain the hardest material and fly through it. His exams have no reflection on what was taught in class and he nitpicks things in the text book and puts them on the exams. Reading isnt mandatory but if you want to get 50% of the qq right you ne
Spends alot of time lecturing about things he doesn't even put on the exams. Test are really extemely difficult. Not the best teacher, he's nice though if that counts for anything.
tests are hard and don't reflect material that was taught. after taking the test i would look for answers in the book and sttill couldn't find them ! tough subject but i would go with benniger
This guy is awful!! His stest are EXTREMELY hard and hardly reflect his lectures. DO NO, I repeat DO NOT take him!!!
He is the hardest Genetics teacher at FAU. Yes he is even harder than Benniger. Take the third guy over the summer if possible. The tests are near impossible, full of trick questions, and going to class is pretty much worthless. I feel his lectures are not related to what is taught. He is the hardest teacher I have taken at FAU by far.
Dr. Hughes is a great professor that breaks down the foundations of genetics and clarifies concepts from the book. Exams are from his notes, but outside reading is useful; get the book! Very fair and curves exams. He deviates from PPT and writes notes which is a wonderful change, and makes the subject interesting. Pay attention and go to class!
He is a good person and easily approachable. However his tests are ridiculously difficult because of how he words his questions, they are really confusing and focus on random little details. Also, you have to attend class to get 10% of your grade which is aggravating if you don't live near Davie. His class is thus very hard and detail orientated
Nice guy. Wants his students to learn the info. Lots of material but he's helpful and clear. Pay attention and read before class and you'll do fine.
A very hard subject broken down. Most genetics teachers use powerpoint slides (boring) while Hughes gets you to map out all concepts. I left feeling I learned a lot, which is important to me in a teacher. Tests are hard but there is a curve on tests, and final grades. Daily iClicker and in class Q, helped my grade. Need book, utilize tutors.
This professor claimed that a huge percentage of his students will fail. LIES. I got 97, 88, 113, 86 (final) on his exams. All you really need to do is read, and take notes in class. I also outlined the chapters. He doesn't use ppts and does manual lectures, but I found ppts online. Iclickers, too! You will have to READ! He also curves exams.
Absolutely loved him! I took him for Ornithology in the summer and I highly recommend it for anyone who need upper division electives. He's passionate, fair, and kind-hearted. The labs on Saturdays were awesome too!
Colin is by far one of the best professors I have taken at FAU. He truly wants you to love Genetics. He takes a pretty hard & complicated subject and explains it in a way that makes you want more. Genetics is hard and you definitely have to study and put in work but he makes it bearable. He curves his exams as well! Go to class for points!Take him!
I really like Prof Hughes and am taking him for two more classes. His classes are always interesting and his tests are essay format which is a lot easier than multiple choice in my opinion because you are able to share what you know. He doesnt do powerpoints but writes out notes in class. Just pay attention and use the study questions . Easy A-B.
Hughes is so nice! He really wants his students to learn about genetics &truly understand it. He doesn't care about points on exams, he wants you to understand the material and be able to defend your answer. He gives a practice exam before every exam -DO THEM! Make sure to read the assigned chapter before every class. both chapters &reading on exam
Amazing professor. Seriously one of FAU's Best. Took him for Ornithology over the summer and although it was early, and although I knew NOTHING coming in- Dr. Hughes does an incredible job in pulling you into care about the subject he teaches. This is why I got an A on both lecture and lab. You need the book, you need to read- but it's interesting.
Dr. Hughes is hands down my favorite professor at FAU. I took two classes with him, wish I could've taken more. He's super nice and wants you to learn. His tests for all his classes are written essay format which sound like it would be terrible but it's actually more advantageous bc you have more of a chance to show what you know. He's awesome.
Took Dr. Hughes for Ornithology last summer and it was hands down my favorite class at FAU. No exams but engaged learning with discussions, light reading and a group paper projt. Simply put Dr. Hughes is an amazing instructor and educator. More importantly, I will always remember what I learned. This is how a science course should be taught.
One of the best professors at FAU. His exams are 1/2 multiple choice 1/2 written. The written is to your advantage because you get to show what you know. If you don't read your textbook you won't pass. Come to class , his lectures are great and he gives in class work which count towards your grade. This class is what you make of it, can do well.
The class is not difficult, but he is. You do not know where you stand in the class and he will not clarify anything for you neither. A self-taught class which is ok, but I didn't really learn anything from him. His TA taught the class better. Lecture consisted of: 10 written-response quizzes (50%), 1 class presentation (20%), take home test (30%).
Lab grading was not clear. Lacked clarity in everything. You do not know where you stand in the class and talking to him via e-mail or in-person is useless. Lab consisted of: group project presentation, bird ID quiz (at the end of lab), research paper, research paper mini-assignments. You will not know your grade until the end. Good luck!
I loved Hughes. He was a great professor. Took him for a number of classes. His teaching style is different and is equivalent to this century of learners. He can be hard to deal with sometimes, but he is always there for you when your struggling. I think his teaching is clear and concise. Hes a straight to the point kind of person. Would take again.
Took him Spring 2018. His grading criteria is very vague. I failed every exam in his class, and when I went to office hours, his advice was not helpful. His in class notes are useless, due to only writing bits and pieces of sentences and confusing drawings. He asks you to grasp concepts that he does not explain clearly. Rely only on the textbook.
He was my professor for my Ecology class. He has the worst notes I have ever seen. His handwriting is very often illegible to an extent that I dont understand what he just wrote. Emphasis on very often, it would be common to ask neighbors to clarify what he just wrote for no one to know, and this would occur several times in one class period.
As a senior at FAU, I can confidently say this was one of my worst experiences of a class in my 4 years. His 'lectures' are essentially him scribbling down pieces of information on a piece of paper and showing us pictures and graphs. Hardly follows the textbook or any other sources for help. No clear expectations of what he wants or how to prepare.
This professor is terrible, first of all he doesnt specify what to study. You read all chapters and tests are all written questions. Ecology is made so hard in FAU. This class is not even all that! I was trying to avoid him forever !!!!!!! But he is the only one available for genetics this semester and its my last one. AVOID
Tried to avoid this prof for spring and I highly regret registering for his class. No powerpoints and nothing on what to study. TA was more helpful than him. I walk out of lecture with no clue on what happened in class and "reading the chapters" is not helpful to students who are visual/repetitive learners. DO NOT TAKE if you learn this way.
Took him in Fall 2018. Interesting subject and enjoyable lectures but as others have said, he hand-writes everything during lectures and they're sometimes difficult to read. You must attend lecture and take notes. Exams aren't too bad because he curves but they're all written response. The packback homework is not difficult but it's annoying.
This is by far the worst class I have ever taken! His class was so disorganized that I had to withdraw to avoid a bad grade. Doesn't provide any sort of powerpoints to study off of. He does notes in class but he doesn't like you looking at them as its "not a good way of learning". You're practically all on your own in this class. AVOID HIM!
This guy writes HIS OWN tests and they are ridiculously hard for no reason. He grades very harshly and he dosent teach you one thing. He has no powerpoints and rambles off about nonsense. Youre teaching yourself genetics. You have to show up to class literally for an attendance grade. Avoid him at all costs. I had to W and Im an A B+ student.
One word, TERRIBLE!
Horrible teaching style. No powerpoints must teach yourself from the textbook. TEACH YOURSELF. I learned nothing from his lecture. Tests are multiple choice and written response. The multiple choice is very hard bc of the way he words the questions. Has to curve every test bc everyone is failing.
This class honestly made me depressed. His teaching style is the worst but claims it is the best. Makes you be an artist on exams and draw pictures, diagrams, etc. He babysits you and calls on people randomly to answer his questions that have no relevance. He scribbles on the board and does not offer anything to boost grade. DO NOT TAKE.
Confused as to why I had to go to lecture when he is unorganized and boring. No powerpoints either. Worst class Ive had at FAU and that should tell you something.
Absolutely a blood bath! This professor has a horrible horrible teaching style. No PowerPoint notes ever posted, just really bad handwritten in class notes. Literally you have to read about 5 chapters per exam full of in depth material and somehow figure out what to focus on for a 20 multiple choice and 20 written answer test. This guy is bad news.
This professor is extremely rude in his office hours so avoid going there. He has no clue how to teach or grade. His notes are not helpful at all because he purposely makes them illegible and he makes comments if he sees students copying the notes. As for grading he gives you a grade but cant back up why youve earned that grade. Avoid!!!
This professor is not clear on his written response portion and as a result the class average was an F. Do yourself a favor and take someone else! He doesnt use PowerPoint and his notes are scribbles so they dont help. Why pay money to teach yourself?! The science department at this school is horrible! They need to evaluate people before hiring
There are 3 exams with essay/short answer questions and graded online postings every week. He gives a clear grading criteria for exams and looks for your opinion backed up by evidence you learned in class and in the text. The class is do-able but you have to read and study for the exams. A lot of class participation talking about conservation.
AWFUL! All semester I felt like I wasn't learning anything (taught myself) but did well up until the final. He made the final impossible, way harder/not like any of the three regular exams. Also pretty sure he down-curved my final grade. Take someone else for genetics!
His handwritten scribbled notes are more like 1-4 words for something you need to read paragraphs on. The tests were WAYY detail orientened, if you take him guarantee you need to read the book. The average on the tests was a F, with the curve a D/C- The class only relies on the tests which are 20pt multiple choice 20pt written. Avoid if you can.
Do not take him! I repeat, do not take him! There are no power points, no study guides, no extra credit opportunities. I couldnt understand him and I didnt learn ANYTHING from him and his lectures. Had to open the book and teach myself. A nightmare!
He will never give you the whole 10/10 points for written exam questions (even if its correct), be prepared to teach yourself and attend many hours of tutoring to learn what he didnt teach in class . It's up to you to make your own notes and try to keep up with what he's lecturing since he does not provide any study guide/material
Dr. Hughes has a unique teaching style. He will not read off powerpoints. He pre-plans his lectures and expects his students to be active learners during class (he loves open discussions)The written portion of tests are graded strictly but including the curves still very manageable. Reading the book is a must. Attend SI. A's have to be earned.
This was one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Failed it and retook with Binninger and passed WITHOUT the need to study! I did brief reviews before the exams and passed. Exams very hard. Hughes uses Tophat for a grade, Binninger uses for extra credit. Hughes makes handwritten concise notes that are very confusing. Horrible professor. Avoid.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. I used to LOVE genetics, but after taking Dr. Hughes's class I now really hate genetics. He is very arrogant, doesn't explain what he wants from students, and expects us to know everything, w/o even guiding us throughout the course. COMPLETELY TERRIBLE - DO NOT TAKE THAT CLASS WITH HIM!JUST A-V-O-I-D! Ruined my GPA! AWFUL!!!!
I would NOT recommend Dr. Hughes for genetics, that seems way too difficult a subject to take with his style of teaching. It's kind of like open discussion, I don't know how to describe it. Tests are free response and I feel are very fair. Difficult to get an A, but B+ is fairly easy with enough work. Conservation bio was a very fun class with him.
Listen to me, and listen to me carefully... Pick him for genetics, and you can kiss your sanity, grades, and mental health down the drain. Absolutely WORST professor I've ever encountered. Averages for exams are F's and just leaves it at that basically. His curve gives maybe a few percentage points up? Like thanks Hughes, really wishing i dropped
Nice person but doesn't give extra credit or doesn't curve exams. Really tough grader and exams are short response with some multiple choice. genetics is already hard enough, i feel like he made it even harder.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Taking his as a professor is the worst mistake you could make. We are currently in a pandemic and this man does not care at all about accomodating his students to remote learning. He is inconsiderate, rude, confusing, and unorganized. He doesn't follow his syllabus and claims some test dates were just"typos" and changed them.
PCB 3063 Genetics -Do not take this class with this professor! Even if you have the ability to memorize your entire textbook you still should not take this course. No matter how hard you study, you will not be tested on the material in your book. Tests are based on written response which he grades depending on his mood.
The students who rate this professor negatively are just lazy and want everything given to them on a silver platter. Professor Hughes is one of the most passionate professors I've ever met and tries very hard to explain the subject in a simpler manner. I struggled with this class! but only because genetics is DIFFICULT in general!
He is helpful when it comes to getting ideas and ways to improving your grade. However, he is very all over the place with the way he grades the course.
He teaches in a way you won't get from other professors. He asks open ended questions to get you to think critically about the topics he covers which can be intimidating at first, but he's nice and wants you to speak up even if it's wrong. Great for this type of class. No PPTs, a couple tests, and 1 group project. Grades aren't posted quickly.
Awful. There was no way to know what your grade was during the entire semester because he would't post anything besides test grades. Tests are entirely essay responses responses are expected to be very detailed. VERY hard to get close to an A
RUN!!!! He was horrible, it is impossible to get an A on his tests.
Professor Hughes was such a nice guy. He is a very tough grader, I don't think anyone got an A on any of our tests. Tests are essay questions, open book, can use other sources. Lectures are mandatory and he does randomly call on people. He didn't put all of the grades in until the end of the semester which can be nerve wracking. 7/10.
Nice guy & cares about his students, but is very unorganized-especially with classes being online. He incorrectly inputted exam points into Canvas so they would be out of 90 instead of 80 when it's supposed to be out of 80. Second he would not put in all grades on canvas, just exam grades. He also never let students know when final grades were done
If you don't put in the work, you will fail. Professor Hughes is so smart and so passionated about teaching that he makes an amazing professor. If you read the textbook and attend his class, you should be able to get an A no problem. His teaching is a bit different but it does make you learn.
His questions are never based on anything from the textbook or lectures. His genetics was truly terrrible. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR GENETICS. Don't do it!
Nothing he teaches is relevant to his tests. Nothing on his tests corresponds to the textbook. This class is a cluster-mess. Just take somebody else.
2 exams + 1 cumulative final, weekly Packback posts, and participation points. Topics were super interesting and I loved this course! Lectures are interactive discussions which makes learning material easier. Exams incorporate both lecture and text so definitely read up. Show that you can apply what you learnt on exams and you'll do fine.
Dr. Hughes is an excellent instructor for conservation biology. The class structure was interactive and the information was interesting and engaging. Only graded homework was discussion posts, and exams were aimed at testing how well you understood the processes and information, by allowing you to write as much related information as you wanted.
Dr. Hughes is a great professor. His teaching style is more old school but I personally prefer that method!! Definitely read the book before class, it will help you understand the lectures greatly. Genetics is a hard course but he is really passionate about it and as long as you study and work for your grade you will love his class. Def. recommend
I took conservation bio with him and it was a lot lot of reading. Written exams but open book. As long as you read the book and take notes from lecture you will be fine. He does not like to be tricky, instead he wants to see that you understand the concept. The questions are straightforward, so just read and take notes!! Good luck!
If you are serious about going to med/dental/pharm school.. this professor is a true gem. If you're not, well I feel bad for you. While his genetics course was challenging and required a lot of conceptual ability and memorization, it has helped me study for the MCAT more than any other course in undergrad. Don't skip class & do the textbook probs!
If ur not willing 2 put in work, don't take him for genetics. Must take ur own notes and draw things out. This method works 4 some, not 4 others. Exams are half MC half written, but 2 me they were easy and every question can be found within the notes of the lectures. The book helps & I recommend it. Not a prof 4 everyone, but I learned soooo much!
Absolutely miserable course. Seek another professor if you want to succeed
Genetics is not an easy class this course is very difficult no matter what professor you choose. However avoid this one if you can. Theres no communication he doesnt respond to emails and neither does the ta so youll be in dark they also don't give feedback on homework at all Everything seems to be graded arbitrarily without following the rubric
Ive taken him for both Genetics & Conservation Bio. Yes, hell call on you, exams are written, and there are no ppts. His goal isnt for you to memorize short-term. His goal is to have you understand long-term. Take notes. Read the book. Email him if you dont understand a concept. He cares a lot & is generous with his time. He is one of the best.
Don't just don't. I should have dropped the class at the moment he said he never gives a 10 to his students, so your test grades are based on a 90.
In my opinion, you have to go out of your way to fail this class. Participation really matters though, but he's very passionate about this course and to me one of the best teachers I've had.
This man is horrible. He has a syllabus but doesn't follow it. We ask him what chapter are going to be on the exam and he says "idk just study what I lectured about" like what? He has this silly list of every student enrolled in the class and then randomly calls on us to answer a question.Hand writing is horrible as well.Writes horrible on purpose.
He was just bad. I don't even want to talk about it.
Tests are based on what he says in lecture, not on what he writes or what's in the textbook. Three tests and a cumulative final are 90% of the grade. Prepare by going to every class and take detailed notes on what he says. You will fail otherwise. He's a nice guy, but not open to feedback, so get a study group and go to SI or you're on your own.
Awesome professor! I would 100% take him again. Participation will ruin your grade if you skip class but his class is very funny and he keeps you entertained. Tests were written but he wants you to write what you learned in his class. I love him and think he is one of the best professors at FAU.
This is a professor I would've loved to love. really nice&wants his students to understand by being very interactive with us. Grades written responses toughly. i mainly focused on this class more than any other classes i took this semester because I really didn't want to fail and disappoint this professor. I failed and won't be taking him again RIP
This professor is so nice and respectful. He makes being in class so fun, and he wants you to understand the material. There are 4 tests in this course and that's all your final grades, no homework no quizzes. Meaning if you fail the tests only the extra credit for being in class can help you a little. He is a great teacher, but this class is tough
Interesting lectures and truly cares. Take notes of what he says as that exact wording is what he is looking for on exams. 2 exams and the final are free-response, my only issue would be the index cards (need more). Doesn't like to curve but bumped grades at the end on the final and gave back 2 points on exam 1. One of the best professors I've had.
I didn't get more than a 50 on any exam and the class avg for each test was about 50%. Final had to be worth 50% of the total grade so students could pass. He wants his students to pass but his teaching methods aren't the best. My only advice is to read the textbook and watch YouTube videos that go over what he talks about in depth
If you care about your grades, do not take him. He jumps all over the place from chapter to chapter and on the exams, he will try to trick you. He does not use PowerPoint and if he gives you a study guide, he doesn't believe in providing the answers to the study guide. He will only review 10 minutes before the exam.
I would rather swallow a piece of glass than sit in his lecture. He doesn't write clearly, he takes points off if he calls on you and you don't give the answer he's looking for. Which is ridiculous. His exam is hard and he doesn't go off power points just his crappy jargon so he calls it. PLEASE! Do yourself a favor AVOID !! taking this professor.
Dr. Hughes is closeminded professor who thinks his way of learning is the absolute best, yet the class average says otherwise. He is not straightforward and difficult to discuss class material with. If you can, take Genetics with a professor who is more interested in teaching their class rather than flaunting their knowledge.
After retaking genetics for a higher grade it was safe to say I was thoroughly disappointed to find out I had received a grade LOWER than the first time I took it. Colin Hughes has lost all credibility in my eyes, I thought that when I took him for Evolution he was hard but Genetics was a nightmare. Consider this a sign, do not take him.
I think Professor Hughes is a great teacher. He's very funny and engages with the class. I think the most important part of his class is his lectures. His exams are heavily based on his lectures and are fair, so show up. You have to be accountable for your own learning, you won't understand everything in class and have to review topics on you own.
Charismatic, not boring. You will have an A+ for the semester until he decides to do his job on the last day and destroys everyones grade. Seriously a jerk move leading his students on until the end. The final is writing based and he just grades it with no explanation/responses to emails when you ask. Messed up and wrong. DO BETTER PROFESSORS!
WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. Does not know how to teach. He is super lazy and makes very tough tests. Stay far away from this professor. This is coming from a senior with a 3.9 gpa.
if youre smart youll be fine hes fair for sure
I don't recommend Dr. Hughes at all. He is very ambiguous on the content and isn't the one to answer a question straightforwardly. Very philosophical which isn't great for a detail oriented course. The struggle is REAL. If you have to take him, watch the online lectures on youtube, read the textbook, and pray. Not much more to be said. Good luck!
Horrible handwriting and refuses to type or make power points, reviews or anything that would help students. Messy notes, good luck being able to read them or make use of them. Be prepared to learn everything on your own.
So unfortunate that this is the only professor available for genetics. He spends most of the lectures drawing pictures you can't read or understand or going on side tangents. He says he "doesn't care about our grades as long as we are learning." Dr. Hughes is a nice guy but does not care about your success in the class.
One of my favorite professors at FAU. You could tell he genuinely cares about his students and wants them to know and understand the material. I would 100% take him again if I could
Only graded on exams and in class questions. He curves a lot and uses previous exam questions which there are quizlets for so the exams aren't that bad. Lectures are really hard to understand you must teach yourself and actually read the book. His handwriting and notes sucks he needs better organization and it would help if he gave exam reviews.
this is a biochem class in disguise
YOU ARE DOOMED. THE PERSON WHO SAID THEY'D SWALLOW A SHARD OF GLASS KNEW WHAT THEY WERE SAYING. I DO NOT RECOMMEND.
WORST PROF EVER BEWAREEEEE !!!!!! HE DOES NOT HELP AT ALL WHEN IT COMES TO THE CUMULATIVE FINAL WORTH 35% OF UR GRADE HE JUST LEAVES U IN THE DUST TO FIGURE IT OUT NOT ONE TIP FOR THE FINAL EXAM HE GIVES U NTH BUT HIS HANDWRITTEN LECTURE NOTES WHICH R USELESS U R SET UP TO FAIL DESPITE PUTTING IN ALL UR EFFORT
A NIGHTMARE! U COULD BE THE SMARTEST STUDENT W A PERF GPA AND THIS WILL RUIN IT STRICTLY BC THE PROF DOES NTH TO HELP THE STUDENTS. I've never struggled so much in my entire academic life. HE MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER HE NEEDS TO CHANGE HIS TEACHING METHOD. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS TAKE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE
Would not recommend this prof. Grades are based only on exams and in class questions. The final exam is worth more than double a single test. The material isn't so difficult but the way he asks the questions on the exams make it very challenging. The only positive this I could say is that he is very generous with curves especially for the final.
Dr. Hughes is a great person and really wants you to learn in his class. I enjoyed this class for this reason because he is the first professor who has really focused on learning over memorizing. The material given to us was a bit unorganized so make sure you are on top of your notes and really listen to him in class. IT HELPS.
My biggest advice for this class is to actually attend lecture and pay attention. He has a lot of bad reviews on here but if you have been fine in other science courses, then you will be fine in this class. Dont let everyone scare you away from taking this professor because he genuinely is great and is my favorite professor at FAU.
One thing I will say is that the final is a MAJOR grade in this course 35% so be prepared. I had a B+ all semester and if I had failed the final I would have ended with a C.I passed the final with the curve. He gives great curves on all exams and make sure to study the Quizlet's online. Half of his questions on exams are on the quizlets so theyhelp
Get used to his style of teaching. It will help your future journey.
WTF is wrong with this guy!!! Speaks in riddles, rambles about nothing, never makes any sense. Makes us do random, unhelpful group work instead of teaching. Tests are impossible and he doesn't tell you what to study. Worst professor I've ever had. Take with another professor if possible LITERALLY ANYONE ELSE
This professor is the worst teacher I've ever taken. His lectures are pointless, as half the subjects aren't on the test. He doesn't host proper review sessions, give us any kind of proper exam review materials for the test, and refuses to use canvas to its full extent either because he's lazy or can't figure it out. He wants students to fail
I had a 4.0 before taking this class as a senior…. Everyone's grades dropped. Taking this was like being dragged across the road. He does not care about organization or student success at all. You have to calculate your own grade, and guess how well you know the content because although his tests are multiple choice he accepts multiple answers.
I genuinely would rather chew on shards of glass than take this class again. pls beware of colin hughes, there is no good form of communication or clarity with this man, if you think you're doing good, think again. I had a B and then he decides to post final grades and ended with a D. i'm holding your hand when i say this, find another professor.
Worst and most confusing professor I have ever taken. Didn't know you grade until the last day of class. Our final was worth 30% and everyone in the class dropped a letter grade. I had a A- and after the final ended with a C+. Calls on you randomly in class and expects you to know. Test is based on textbook and not lecture.
I would rather tie myself to the end of a truck and have it drag me 10 miles through shards of glass than ever have to see this professor again. Sending bad energy his way.
Colin Hughes should not be allowed to teach this course, but until then DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! I had an A all semester and ended with a C+ with no explanation. Speaks in riddles, goes off on irrelevant tangents, does not prepare you for exams at all, and does not respond to emails. Genuinely the WORST professor I have ever had
Please believe ALL of the most recent comments! Take heed and do not take this Professor he is the worst professor ever! I love fau so much, never had an issue with any other professors except Hughes. He doesn't prep you for any of the exams. He will fail you, don't gamble with your gpa, avoid him.
All my years at college this was one of the worst professors i have taken. His notes don't help, doesn't really help with review on the material, and makes the concept of genetics confusing by trying to be philosophical. Very poor grading system, this man is hurting many students gpa's please avoid this guy his teaching needs to be addressed.
Great guy but very unreliable in grading; you won't have any idea what your grade is until it is in the transcript. Canvas is entirely inaccurate which he forewarns, but there is no other avenue for estimating your grade that he provides. The lectures are poor quality because the mechanisms he emphasizes in class are not on the exams.
worst professor, he just played with the grades. you thought you have an A and you end up in a C-. his lectures have NOTHING TO DO with the exams, o power points, only in class "notes" but they are not notes only unuseful drawing and information that is not relevant. BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO CONSIDER KICK UT THIS MAN FROM TEACHING
WORST PROFFESOR, HE SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDER SOMEONE TO TEACH!!!!!you thought you have an A and you end up in a C-. his lectures have NOTHING TO DO with the exams, o power points, only in class "notes" but they are not notes only unuseful drawing and information that is not relevant. BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO CONSIDER KICK UT THIS MAN FROM TEACHING
HE DOES NOT HOW TO BE A PROFESSOR
GET READY TO LEARN BY YOURSELF, HE WILL TEACH NOTHING USEFUL AT CLASS, HE EXPECTS YOU TO GO HOME AND TEACH YOURSELVE
don't pay for a class you will learn nothing, you will fail of get a really low grade even if you do so good, way better than the rest of the class, he just wants to give the impression to the biology department his class is hard so he makes almost all students fail and he lowers one letter to your grade, if you had a A expect B-
Everyone knows that Dr. Hughes is the worst professor in the Biology department it's ridiculous that FAU has not done anything about it. I wonder what's the ratio of how many students pass his class because many always fail. The final that he offers is worth 40% which he DOES NOT GIVE A REVIEW. Isn't that sick? He doesn't prep he wants us to fail.
PLEASE take another professor, ANY OTHER. Professor uses roster and calls on you to answer questions and if you say you "don't know" or don't answer, he deducts participation points. Attendance is 20% of your grade and if you do not participate every time he calls on you points are deducted. Doesn't answer emails at all, takes forever to grade HW.
I enjoyed him as a person, but somewhat of a difficult teacher. No feedback/rubric are given on assignments neither are instructions. He seems to not know about the canvas assignments and provides no info. Grades super subjectively. Hard to do well, as there is no criteria of what an "A" assignment looks like. Enjoyed his personality not his class.
Do not take Hughes for any class, he makes attendance mandatory and does not grade easy at all. He grades your participation based off if he liked the answer you gave him. No rubrics in this class to follow on how to write the easy or the final and grades very harshly with zero feedback. Do not take any class with him, he wants you to fail.
Terrible professor, doesn't grade homework for the entire semester so you're literally left confused on what your final grade is until grades are due. The tests were easy in terms of there were only 4 essay written questions but Grades are based on his opinion, doesn't matter how much of a substantial answer you give on tests, he loves a good C.
