Easy open book quizzes and tests..plus he is a funny entertaining guy who keeps the discusions flowing. You would have to be brain dead to not pass this class.
awsome teacher...very very easy...makes you think, and doesn't have busy work...read the book, and attend his classes and you will surely pass.
If you want to understatnd how the Criminal Justice System works and the career oportunities offered to succeed in law enforcement you should take advantage of the courses instructed by Colin.
Entertaining teacher whether or not the subject is. Tests come right out of the book, and all tests/quizs are open book. Colin doesn't "BS", he gives you his real opinion even if its not what most people want to hear which is quite refreshing. He is always up for a good debate and shows great video

awesome teacher with interesting lectures. His class was an easy A as long as you showed up..and best part is that if he knew you worked hard on ur case studies, he would easily raise your grade..or your final grade =)
Very funny and candid prof. Get your homework done! This class is misleading but if you work at it you should do well as the sm is not that difficult.
Great instructor. He makes his classes so interesting that you always want to show up. As for the course work... as long as you follow along and do the work you will get a good grade. Pretty easy if you show up to class.
Colin always keeps it interesting. He teaches well, keeps the subject matter lively, and manages to throw in some great stories along the way. Read the book and participate in the discussion so he can see you're trying and you'll do fine in any of his classes- take advantage of this guy- he knows his stuff!

Colin is AWESOME!!!! Show up, do your homework and your set!!! Exams are easy, all openbook/open notes!!
Take McCaughey if you are at all interested in Law or if you want and interesting class with a professor you learn a great deal from and who actually makes class time pretty darn entertaining. This guy deserves Teacher of the year if you ask me. I know endless people who sign up for classes @ IVC just to fill their scheds with his courses.
Colin in the best teacher i'hv ever had. He is funy, eazy and cool.I recommend you to take his class. All open book...Eazy A
Awesome teacher. The best i have ever had. He is nice to students and is open to anything they have to say.
The best teacher I have had in a long time. I always looked forward to his class. He keeps the material interesting and fun. Opean to talking about everything in life. Looking forward to taking his next class. If only we had more teachers like him.
McCaughey's class was always fun. Learning experience was great. Made it easy to remember the material. I actually looked forward coming to class.
This class should be renamed jail bait 101. We learned how to make a knife out of toilet paper and what prison gangs to join as soon as we get in jail. I'll have much use for this information in compton recommended to all criminals!!!
HE IS THE MAN
Great teacher, knows the material and is straight forward with students. Class is informal and interactive with very interesting lectures and stories. One of the best professors at IVC in my opinion and with him and Mauney AOJ is quite possibly the best department on campus.
A+ Mr. McCauhgey is one awesome teacher. I had him online. He is clear on what he wants and the topics covered are very interesting and debatable. If you are going to take him, I would recommend the normal in class setting. He is a very funny guy, and inclass debates are much better than online discussion. Either way, take atleast one of his classes
Great teacher, really helpful and goes out of his way to help students pass with a good grade.
Online AJ2 course. Perhaps one of the easiest and most informative classes I have ever had. Laid back teaching method, wants you to discover the answers yourself on the discussion board. Weekly assignments took me about an hour a week and we took 5 quizzes online throughout the semester. A+ for ease and simplicity.
Excellent teacher!
!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is a pretty good teacher all around. He is pretty knowledgeable. He likes to joke around a lot. I recommend him, even though he can seem like an a hole and he doesn't pay attention to your questions or concerns.
I took his online class. It was fair and easy. You walk away learning a lot, especially from the quizzes. His weekly questions are interesting and often relatable, so it makes the process fun. I would definitely rather take him in person, only because he seems like he would have awesome in-class discussions.
Colin is a very entertaining teacher. He is extremely knowledgable and accessible. If you have questions about anything, he's quick to clarify or respond to emails. The quizzes/midterm/ and final are all based upon information in the book, so if you show up to class, but don't read it, you can expect to get a B or C on them. While attendanc
He is a really good teacher, he is funny and classes are enjoyable to go to. However, he only touches up on a little of each chapter in the lectures, so in order to do well on tests and have them be easy, you have to read the textbook ALOT and take notes. I spent about 4 hours reading and noting each chapter, and you do 2 chapters a week.
Colin is an excellent instructor and very knowledgeable. He keeps his lectures fun and interesting. He?s got my vote for teacher of the year. If you pay attention and read the assigned chapters, you'll easily get an A.
he is a great professor, probably among the best at IVC. Because of him i look forward to going to class, and for the future pursuing my career in criminal justice. He teaches you alot about responsibility and using you brain but yet he clarifies everything so simply.
Best teacher at IVC. Easy A IF you do the work! Makes his classes fun.
Awesome teacher, makes learning the material interesting and fun! DEF RECOMEND taking the online class. Coursework laid out in a clear and understandable way, no lack of info whatsoever. GREAT! Nothing negetive, just doesnt participate in discussion board questions - thats my only complaint, otherwise excelent!
McCaugheny definitely knows his stuff. He is funny as hell, and will make sure to crack a joke every few minutes. Power point presentations, uploaded on BB, online quizes and HW, open book, open note. VERY highly recommended, fun class.
he is the best instructor i have ever had. so clear on everything. he will answer everything you ask. i changed my major because of his teaching and his passion. i cant wait to take my next class with him. teacher of the year for sure
colin is best. he is so clear on what he wants done. i have never enjoyed taking a class before like his. thanks to him i switched my major. def should be teacher of the year!
Colin makes you work hard, but is very fair in his marking, and it is fun learning. He uses 1 textbook and 1 non fiction book for the course. A is guaranteed for those who read the work each week.
His online class is great. Loads of reading required but you see your progress throughout the semester. Am taking him again next semester.
perfect funny instructor. He is so funny and knowledgable. you wont fall asleep in his class he maske u laugh all the time also ur A is guaranteed if u do all he asks u to do. Extremely recommended
He was very nice and knowledgeable (was a cop for years) but a VERY hard grader.
The summer class pace is intense and you have a lot of reading to do. His classes are really informative. If you do not read your textbook, you will not do well in his class. Same goes for 1 liner discussion board posts.
Took online class this summer and got a fairly easy A. Reading textbook and other materials is a MUST to write weekly assignments. All quizzes are from the textbook. Most students didn't do well b/c lack of understanding and lack of writing skills. Do spell check before you submit.
Took this online in the Fall. Prof. McCaughey is a really knowledgeable and cool teacher. I liked his class a lot. He is extremely organized and the class is well-structured. I would definitely recommend him and this class.
Colin is a great guy and a great teacher. I have had him 3 times now and I have never left not happy with how the class went. Extremely recommended for anyone who wants a better understanding of Administration of Justice.
He is incredible u wont find anybody else like this guy he is awesome in any way. take his class u wont regret
Simply put, Colin is good people. Check out his class for sure.
Great professor. He has a lot of knowledge to share and he clearly states what he requires in his class. Just do the homework and quizzes and you will get an A
I took Colin online for both AJ 2 and AJ 5 - he's organized, clear, and super helpful. There is a lot of work to be done, but the work is easy - and really, if you can devote about 3 hours a week to it, you'll get it all done (which is about as long as you'd spend in a classroom a week anyway!). Impossible not to get an A, in my opinion.
Colin is great. He actually makes learning fun, and you actually have to try to get an F. Some peeps say he is a hard grader, though that's not the case. If you get a low score, it's because you did not add enough detail. I have taken six classes with Colin, and I have actually retained more than other classes. The use of the book is seldom. A+++
Colin is the best professor at IVC. He uses great teaching methods and is overall a great guy. He has stories that relate to anything you're learning because he was a cop. You must show up for his class, lecture will be on quizzes/tests. Your grade will reflect your effort. Do your reading and show up, you'll get an A. DEFINITELY TAKE HIM!
Prof McCaughey was awesome in my opinion. I took his AJ2 class online and it was exceptionally organized. You know what is expected each week. I learned alot from this course. You will have to read the book and research other websites, so it's no easy A but definitely doable. I highly recommend taking him.
Extremely easy class. I took this course online and all I had to do were the assignments. He even says so in his orientation. Do them and you'll get an A. Nothing difficult. Even the quizzes are easy because you have a textbook right in front of you and it is not timed. You can also save the quizzes and come back to it at a later time.
One of the best teachers ever! Manageable workload, beneficial assignments & fast response times to emails etc. Very Knowledgeable and really cares about your ability to learn the materials. A must take teacher
I have never taken such an organized online class! Everything was very straighforward and clear and easy to access. Disc board every week, a lot of reading assignments, easy quizzes, and a legal research paper. Material is really interesting but be prepared for a lot of work. McCaughey knows his stuff and is very friendly and helpful, take him!
Really great professor. So laid back and he really can entertain the class. The lecture are a bit boring but his personality makes up for it. All the quizzes, tests, and homework assignments are online which makes his class pretty low maintenance. Would definitely take another one of his classes.
Colin is hands down one of the best teachers I'll ever have. He's a great teacher, a genuine dude, and sometimes he'll even crack a joke or two. Or ten. You'll learn a lot and have a fun time doing it. Take his class.
Awesome Professor with lots of real life experience in the field he teaches. Very straight forward and structured class to help keep you organized. I definitely recommend you take his courses. If you show up and do the work you will be just fine. ATTENTION TO DETAIL is definitely expected of you especially those looking into a law enforcement job.
This professor is probably one of the best I've ever taken. The online class I took was extremely organized and told you exactly what needed to be done. He gives you feedback and discussion boards will make you or break you. On tests, you HAVE to pay attention to detail. Overall, do what needs to be done and you'll get an A hands down.
I don't agree that this Professor is very lenient. You have to study hard. You have to do all the homework. You can't miss so many sessions. If you do all these for any class you would get an A. it doesn't mean this professor gives you an easy A. All his quizes and exams are online but it doesn't mean they are easy and you can find answers easily.
Colin is very knowledgeable and experienced instructor in AJ program. You will learn so much by just listing his lecture. Tests are tough. But I think he may give you a break if your attendance and participation are present through out the semester. I definitely will take more of his class!
I took a hybrid class with this professor and his lectures were'nt bad or long. In regards to the online, yes there is work that needs to be done but its not much for a report writing class. He's a easy grader and as long as you put effort in, he'll give you credit basically. He's relaxed but if you walk in late dont show up, he'll mark you absent.
I love Colin I am part of the XTE (Lambda Alpha Epsilon) Association because of him, and I am done with my AS in Criminal Justice, and I think everyone should get to know him he wrote some great recommendation letters for me. :)
He's such a good teacher. I've taken him for every criminal justice class. As long as you do the work you should pass.
Easy class. Got an A by just doing the online assignments and looking at textbook.
I took AJ 2 which felt more like an online class with mandatory in class lectures. I showed up to every class which btw always ended about 15-30 min early which was great. The quizzes werent hard and the hw was easy. Just go to class and make sure to do all online assignments. Textbook is absolutely required. He also grades an 87% as an A.
You will learn something from this Professor life long experiences. He genuinely wants to see the students do well and he usually responds to most questions from students, both inside and outside the class. Online materials and homework are weekly. If you do every homework, you should have no problem. Open book tests are detail oriented.
Not for lazy students, this class you do need to work on writing and using your text book. Lecture is pretty much through the textbook. Skip class but do homework should still get you to pass. To get A , do every homework. Open test needed to read carefully. He knows the materials and students do have fun learning half of the content in class.
Great professor that was very knowledgeable in the field of Law Enforcement. Whether you want to be a cop, a lawyer, or even a criminal this is a great class to take. The subject matter is somewhat boring, but he will make jokes and be very straightforward about what things are like in the real world. Not politically correct, which is refreshing.
Took his AJ2, AJ4, and AJ106 classes. A lot of reading but interesting. Learning about the law and police. His stories are interesting since he was a officer himself. Take his class for GE!
Get the textbook. It's useful for tests. Show up to class and pay attention. It's not hard. Just do your work. Most if not all should be online. Easy going cool teacher. I would definitely take another class with him.
Easy class! An 87 in this class counts as an A. u wont regret it. the only annoying thing is the weekly discussions, but hes an easy grader
his syllabus states he can round up points and help students.. does not occur! his syllabus allegedly states the way to submit your discussion boards when in reality it does not... he is very vague and grades tough.
I took the online class over summer. Not hard if you keep up and do your work. I could get everything done without any problem, and the online exams allowed unlimited time. Assignments were pretty simple, nothing super lengthy or difficult. Anyone should be able to get an A or a B in the online class provided you do all your assignments on time.
Professor McCaughey is extremely organized, you are given a list of what to do and how to do it. He gives great feedback on each assignment and each week has the same assignments due but for a different chapter. This class is an overview of Crim J, and was super interesting. A 20 question quiz each week but SUPER easy as long as you read.
I've taken Professor McCaughey for AJ 2 and 4 and got an A in both classes. Really enjoyed both classes and found that they were straightforward if you kept up with the weekly assignments (discussion boards, short assignments, etc.)
Professor McCaughey's online AJ 2 was great. Everything is clearly outlined in the syllabus so there is really no room for error. Two weekly discussion boards, 1-2 small weekly assignments through blackboard, and 1 weekly quiz. Almost everything is based on the textbook so it is essential to pass the class! Submit quality work and you'll get an A.
I am very confused looking at some of the bad ratings. I took his class and the grade was based on weekly discussion board, one quiz every other week, one short assignment every other week. If you do the work, you will get an A or at least a B. He does NOT give out extra credit. He said that at the first class. And he does not curve any points.
There is a discussion board every week. You need to make sure you use the textbook and external sources in order to receive full points. The quizzes can be tricky because you need the textbook. You must buy the textbook if you want to pass the course. Assignment and a discussion board every week. 4 quizzes (1 is the final).
Took the AJ4 class online. Discussion boards and assignments every week, and sometimes there's a quiz or a project. Grading is pretty straightforward if you follow directions and put some effort. Gives good feedback on assignments you missed points on and overall every week for the class as a whole. Make sure you do each and every task each week!
Must attend classes. Don't expect a political correctness. Lectures can get intense and are awesome. There is a ton of reading but tests are open book. I totally recommend his classes.
Quality teacher that lays out the guidelines for each assignment and the class as a whole. As long as you follow all the guidelines and submit all the work with effort, you should get an A. Strict deadlines and explains what you miss points on if you miss any. Textbook is essential. Overall good experience.
Pretty easy. All of his online classes are a breeze. Most of the class is just discussion group participation. Answers to quizzes and such are all in the book. Get an older version of the textbook to save money. Always did this and it never mattered. As long as you get the gist, you'll get the points. Easy A.
he is really funny i love this class its barely my first year and he is already the best by far. He doesnt give that much hw its easy you have a week to do it so you have time.
Horrible teacher. Avoid at all costs!
One of the funniest professors ever. His class is laid out pretty straightforward and his lectures are awesome. If you want a professor who loves teaching but can teach in a fun way, he's the professor for you. His AJ2 class is so easy that you'd have to try really hard to fail that class.
You have to read the textbook, meaning that you've got to buy it first. My most favorite professor, we're great friends, and he is just amazing overall. Hilarious guy, very experienced, knows what he's talking about. Super accessible. If you've got anything going on outside of class, he's got your back and will work things out for you. PLEASE TAKE!
Very easy class. There is reading and homework every week but super super easy. Just read the chapter beforehand and you will receive full credit. Lectures are not important for the quizzes and assignments. Everything happens online so you dont have to take notes in class.
Took 4 classes AJ 2,4,5,19 and 1 internship CWE:AOJ 168 with McCaughey. He is very respected/experienced in both the real/academic worlds. Provides extracurricular activities to his students such as job fairs/AOJ program/etc. Very fair grader and provides explanations for EVERY assignment below 100%. Weekly online lectures given for each lesson.
The most amazing professor and the best class I have taken at my time in Irvine Valley College. Professor McCaughey was so kind, funny and overall an amazing teacher and made a boring subject fun. He made every single lecture informative and tried to teach us all to be kinder to each other. He will be missed and I hope he is resting in peace now.
Colin, you were the best professor ive ever had. Im not sure where Ill be able to learn about the harsh realities of life while still laughing about it like you did. Ill miss you dearly.
One of the best professors at IVC and gave actual insight about the real world of criminal justice. He was a pretty nice guy and cared a lot about students and their education. His classes were actually interesting and informative and it's extremely tragic that the program has lost him. Hopefully he's resting in peace. Truly an amazing professor.
Fantastic professor learned lots from him and had a great time in his class. Wish I had more time with them!
Professor Mccaughey was by far the professors that got the class engagement during my academic years. He taught how to accept and respect our differences and recognize our biases. Mccaughey was a memorable human being and will not be forgotten by anyone that knew him. His passing was a great loss for all of us. Sending my love to his family!
IVC doesn't use the grading schema of +/- letter grades. So all the reviews for IVC you see on this site where the student claims he got a letter grade +/- are simply fake and not written by a student from that College.
