This has been the worst University of Ottawa experience in my life. Keeps on telling us to pretend we're CSI agents yet the exam is designed to trick you. Many good students are doing bad in this class. Sign up to the French section if you can - otherwise stay out of uOttawa in the first place.

honestly this man is an insult to higher education, he's a terrible teacher, doesn't understand the material himself, and makes terribly unfair midterms. Dont get me wrong i got 23/25 on it, but i've never stepped foot in his classroom other than for midterms. switch to the french section even if you don't speak french.

This prof is by far the worst! he's lecture jump from topic to topic. He assumes you are fully aware of GENETICS. Of all else, his exam doesn't make sense, irrelavent to class. Stay away from this guy. He'll lower your average significantly.

Probably one of the worst classes in the entire Biology Program at Ottawa. Final Exam was extremely long and difficult. Exam questions do not relate to in class problems and textbook questions.

Absolute insult to the institution we call university. He understands no genetics, refuses to admit mistakes, makes incredibly hard exams in order to lower the average out of spite, refuses to discuss performance of exams with students and is extremely rude, when students, who truly understand the material, confront him.

Why is this man on the Senate Teaching Committee for uOttawa? This is the worst second-year course you can take. I received an A+, and am seriously not satisfied with this course. Montpetit keeps adding these useless case studies, which have nothing to do with genetics and are designed to win him a teaching award. Switch to French section.

Makes mistakes all the time and will not budge to anyone, Horrible teaching and everything is straight from the textbook. Incredibly boring and waste so much time on case studies. Midterms were all MCQ and then out of nowhere gives us an exam out of 125 with 25 MC and the rest long answer leaving us unprepared. Came in to exam 98% left with 81

It seems as though he has a very superficial understanding of the course material. He sometimes appears to be aware of the gaps in his understanding, but responds to students' questions with a defensive attitude, sometimes bordering on overt hostility, particularly when his grasp of the subject matter is at risk of being shown to be limited.

Lectures were off topic, unfair marking schemes, he whined through multiple lectures.. altogether awful prof.

He really does not know how to teach, his teaching methods are really bad, and does not actually explain the concepts at all. The midterms and final are half group exams making you have less time to write the individual exam which is way harder and worth more of your grade. His multiple choice questions are completely ambiguous, hes not a good prof

A chill guy when you attend his first lecture. However, after 3-4 classes, you realize that he cannot explain any genetics concepts! Always dodged people's questions by telling you to look at the clicker Qs and "the person beside you" to help answer the question. I actually liked the group exam, but for the individual exam - RUN.

Awful. Doesn't teach during lectures (loves to swear instead), half of which are cancelled. Dropped it when I changed programs (best decision). Avoid at all costs.

Group exams stupid. Cancels every second lecture. Doesn't teach much on the lectures he does have. Would not take again.

You don't have to go to class to do good (Stopped going after the first miterm) but you do need the participation marks to boost up your grade, easy 15% and will help you in the end. Final was long and confusing and was out of time to finish it, but in the group exam we got 93% and that pretty much saved my grade.

The only reason I'm going to class is for the stupid "bin points." This has got to be the worst professor at uOttawa, worse than any arts professors which is saying something. We literally spent three quarters of one class listing how males are physiologically different from females. He doesn't teach genetics; you have to learn it yourself.

Horrible professor. He doesn't teach at all, and thinks his hybird way of teaching is effective. Its just a waste of time to go to his classes.

This guy made it seem like this course would be very interesting and fun on the first day of school... Do not fall for that. He does not even know how to teach. I'm paying for this course to actually learn something in class... not to teach myself over half of the material in a short period of time. Avoid!!

He tries so hard to be interesting, funny, and eccentric in class - but he's not. Lectures are utterly useless, filled with tangents, bad jokes, Star Wars references, and swears. Believes his way of teaching is the best, but in actuality you come out of the course with the same knowledge coming in. Tests are doable, but marking scheme is rigid.

he's probably the worse prof of my whole academic path in uottawa. All the concepts that i used in his exams are not taught in class... the lab section is even worse, your grade in that section depends on the TA that is correcting. He spends way too much time on his lame jokes and not actually on teaching. avoid by all means!!

Comments are pretty accurate on here. Group exams were such a waste of bloody time. Even if you do better on them, your final mark on the exam can only go up a couple of points. I would have much preferred more time to write the bloody things. Prof was pretty full of himself and spent too much time talking about his personal life.

Genetics was easily my least favourite class of university. His tests are out of 30 marks and about 3/4 of the test are comprised of multiple choice and true or false that are very ambiguous. Probably the worst lecturer I have every had. I've gotten A+ in most of my courses yet was unable to crack an 80 on his midterms. Enjoy...

WORST PROF EVER. He teaches concepts about genetics without actually giving any context whatsoever to the textbook or anywhere you could go to reinforce your knowledge. The textbook is pretty much useless. His exams are not fair at all; wording is completely ambiguous and he will not clarify when you ask him on midterms.

Awful Prof. He is the worst proffesor in the science faculty. Brags about how great his teaching style is when it really isn't. His research is on science education but he is the worst educator I have ever had. Also very rude when students ask questions. His group exams are pointless as well. Avoid at all costs.

I used to love genetics until having Montpetit as a prof. I'm a student who generally does well in my courses but I am having a hard time doing well in his class. He doesn't spend time teaching and is very rude. Like the rater below said, he is the worst prof in the science faculty. Don't take this course as an elective.

The course is set up for you to get a bad marks. The labs quizzes are worth like 1.5 points, and the entire midterm is worth 25-30 points. Any wrong answer screws you up completely. The WORST course I've ever taken.

The worst class I ever take. It is almost impossible to get 80 on his individual exams. His group exam is just waste of time, and it can only slightly increase your mark ( less than 5) . The professor do not focus on teaching but too much about his profession life. Take other prof's class if you can!

Don't bother with the textbook. Make sure to understand the concepts, which, since he does a poor job explaining it in class, would be better aided by other online resources such as wikipedia. Tests do not resemble clicker questions or Mastering, so don't bother with memorization.

This class has the potential to be really interesting, genetics is an awesome topic, but Colin makes it so unbearable. He barely teaches in class and can't even remember what a ribosome is used for. He assigns readings that are your only way of learning but are also way too specific. The best way to learn is to do the readings and the mastering.

The worst prof I've had in my three years at uOttawa. Arrogant, constantly boasting about his "revolutionary" teaching techniques (which are actually garbage). Condescending and annoying. Tries too hard to be unique. Bad lecturer, looses his train of thought every 2 minutes. And group exams? Really??? Avoid his class if you can.

The worst prof. He himself is actually genuinely nice and approachable, however he is extremely ill-suited towards a professor role. Blended Learning is more suited toward teaching farm animals in kindergarten than toward teaching complex genetics in a university setting. No train of thought throughout lectures, hard to follow and hard to study for

Honestly the hardest course I have taken at this university.

HOW DOES THIS GUY HAVE A RATING ABOVE 2? I've learned more about his cats and his kids than actual course content. The only redeemable feature is the 15% participation, but even that won't keep you afloat. Might as well take the french version cause you'll have the same odds of getting an A+ (0%). btw don't bother with the textbook - it won't help.

He is distracted and his blending learning technique is poorly executed.

I have studied relatively hard for the midterms and haven't done well on either. Even if you study the course material and know it really well, that is no guarantee for even a passing grade. His exam questions are more critical thinking and too little time is allocated towards the individual exam (1 hr) in order to make time for a group exam.

The worst course I have His blended learning is horribly executed, he does NOT explain ANY concepts clearly but immediately jumps into practice questions The readings are absolutely useless and go into details completely unrelated to the course. Exams are VERY tricky even if you study all of the concepts perfectly it is still unlikely to succeed

Probably the worst professor that uOttawa has to offer. This man cannot teach for his life. It's like he just shows up for the sake of showing up. Midterm and Exams are out of a small amount of marks eg. 25-30 marks so each questions was like 4%. Little room for error in a short amount of time (1 hour ONLY!)

Why is he the only prof for this course?

Montpetit seems like a nice guy, but he's a horrible professor (flipped classroom). I went into this class thinking it would be an easy A, but boy was I bamboozled. The content itself is very simple, pretty much everything you would expect. But between the nonsensical babbling and the trick questions, you're likely to get a bad mark and a headache.

I didn't like his hybrid teaching and would prefer regular lectures. His lectures seemed easy and he always emphasized how everyone should get 100%. Midterms and exam were tricky. No room for making mistakes. Labs and participation are easy grades. But exams brought my mark down :(

Extremely disorganized messy course, this "hybrid" online and lecture method is terrible. keep avoiding this course until a new professor teaches it because it will bring down your GPA. lectures are a complete waste of time, he doesn't teach ANYTHING and you just end up even more confused. avoid, avoid, avoid!!!

uOttawa NEEDS to hire a new genetics professor. He does not teach in the lectures and a big chunk of the participation marks come from clicking random things on brightspace, making it really easy to miss getting the marks. He doesn't take into account that his students have 4/5 other classes and expects us to work on genetics 24/7 outside of class.

Honestly, one of the most disorganized professors. For each module I put in 15 hours of readings and still ended up with mediocre marks. Would not take again. Heavy courseload and what we are supposed to learn is not specified.

He does not explain ANYTHING, I sometimes had the feeling he cheated his way into getting his degree because I was given the impression he knew nothing of what he was teaching. Avoid at all costs, take it in French if you can. Save yourself from this awful teaching method. Absolute garbage, put in a lot of hours into teaching yourself.

Flipped classroom is ineffective & wastes time, just teach yourself & do echo questions from home. Concepts are easy but exams are all trick questions & mind games instead of evaluating your knowledge/application. He teaches incorrect info (claims that Edwards Syndrome is a type of Down Syndrome, & that sexgender among others "facts"). Avoid him.

His lecture is just echo360 based. The lab is designed to fail you -> Do CSL if possible. His exam wording is so confusing that even you definitely know the concept but you will still get it wrong. Didn't learn any useful information from this class. Try to get his past midterms, he recycles questions.

I think he means well but he tries so hard to make classes like highschool and interactive that he teaches you NOTHING. All the content is so straight forward in theory but the test questions are horribly worded and make no sense. Luckily there's lots of participation marks but honestly avoid this guy. AVOID. exams are long and full of trick questions, so you either can read them out carefully or answer them all. His lectures have zero teaching in them. the concepts he goes over are not complicated at all, but the way he explains them (on tests and in class) makes zero sense. If you can, take CSL because it will save. your. grade.

This guy is the biggest mess I've ever come across. I went to 2 lectures the whole semester and never went back, it's a waste of time. Just remember to get the participation marks and just study on your own IGNORING ALL THE EXTRA STUFF HE POSTS. Midterms are hard. Teaches like he is having a conversation. Final was very difficult and took almost 17hrs to complete (wish I was kidding) and at the end I almost failed the final exam by 8%. To make it worse the lab quizzes are horrible (talk about the program instead of the actual concept). If you can take it in French do it. (trust me)

Don't be mistaken by his amazing lectures and fun personality. His exams are absolutely preposterous. They really come out of left-field. If you have endured Alexandra Pettit, he is very similar. Nice but awful awful exams.

He is very unorganized and just rambles during his lectures. He does not prepare for his lecture and uses a very blank slide show as a template. Lectures always get off topic because he allows for discussion even though it is completely unrelated to course material. He cannot explain topics and will just repeat himself when you ask

Really enjoyable and inspirational class in the concept of learning genetics. However, his exams are too specific and not open to other forms of reasoning. To simplify, there are questions that make you overthink and provide valid and wonderful explanations towards it but not get credited due to the reason that it is "not in the markscheme".

This class started off great, the lectures were fun and told as a story, however as the semester went on I found that I was not learning much from the lectures. He builds up your confidence throughout the semester and leading up to the midterms but then screws you over. His exams are WAY too specific and long with an unforgiving marking scheme.

Midterm content DOES NOT correlate with his teaching methods. You can go to all the lectures and do all the readings and homework and its still never enough. He gives you engaging applications in lectures, then expects you to recite the entire genetics bible and his TAs will swallow you whole with no mercy. This class is harder than biochemistry!!!

He makes incredibly hard tests to which you need to write the exact answer or else you won't receive any credits. He also posts so many resources that are quite literally impossible to go through. Horrible.

with an unforgiving marking scheme, he expects your midterm answers to match his word for word - expect a zero if you don't phrase your answer the way he would. his lectures consist of an hour of wooclap questions and there is absolutely no structure to the course. all he does is bash biochem (which btw is 10x easier than this awful course)

I never want to take this class ever again because the fact that I did better in biochem is ridiculous. The class content seems easy, and the practice questions on wooclap help, but it all goes out the window on the midterms. They are much harder, and the grading scheme is not in anyone's favor.

His lectures are quite honestly useless, he basically uses Kahoot for university and doesn't actually teach anything. His tests are extremely hard and not straight forward , and there's nowhere else to get marks other than the 10% homework. Stay away from Dr. Montpetit if you have a choice and want to actually pass the class or learn stuff.

His midterms are very difficult, the content shouldn't be this difficult, he just does not teach. His slides just have pictures - so there's nothing to study. Really important to go to class or watch the recorded lectures.

my god this class was a monstrosity. I actually think this man is a narcissist. I will let his one quote speak for his entire class, "I see the class is very confused about this and that this is a hard subject. But for that reason I will put it on the final and watch you struggle." Midterms were extreme and his lectures were a waste of time...

Montpetit pretends to be your friend, he is not. He claims that the exams are "fair" and "doable" and proceeds to tell us that our class average was barely passing. His lectures are basically genetics trivia sessions and you are left to fend for yourself if you actually want to learn something and take solid notes.

The lectures were just a bunch of nothing to make himself look better and not teach anything. There was barely any relevant material to study with and the practice test he does give has is no answer key, therefore you cannot know how well your actually doing. The midterms were very difficult and not fair for the amount of time given.

Don't be fooled by his charismatic demeanour! Though his lectures are engaging, his exams are very difficult to study for since the content is almost nothing like what we talked about in class. He says his average for this class is close to a 70% but be aware its your hard work from the lab component that's gonna pull you through.

Dr. Montpetit has very engaging classes and encourages students with a positive attitude. However, he builds up your confidence so much, then tears it right down with the final exam. Midterms were online, and doable. The final had questions on it that were way beyond the level of the midterms. Not enjoyable at all.

I was looking forward to genetics, but the marking scheme was too tricky; marks were taken off or not given for the smallest details, and it crushed all confidence built. Expect the same for the exam. The lectures were mediocre as it was all over the place and the slides provided little to no detail.

Lectures are composed of examples making it hard to prepare for exams as we are only taught how to answer specific situation-based examples. He builds up confidence for midterms but makes the marking schemes so specific that missing one word will get you no marks. The final was way harder than the midterms and contained content he did not cover.

Exam was aids. That's it. Avoid, take in French with diff prof.... even if you don't understand the language.

The final exam was nothing like the midterms. It had so many disorientating questions and the midterms were much easier. Students would be doing way better if he did harder example problems in class, but instead he wastes time on questions babies can do. If you take this class, you're probably gonna have to teach yourself.

The lectures seem fun and all until you quickly realize that your not really learning anything. The final was brutal and had little connection to the midterms and in class content. He is very misleading and not forgiving in terms of marks, and even mentioned betting on our midterm averages with other profs like our education is a game.

Dr. Monpetit is really sweet and gives off Dad vibes. He does want to help you. But to give analogy of his teaching, in lecture he slowly teaches you the alphabet then surprise on exams you need to know how to write essays. While the lectures are engaging with the online poll questions he implements to test you, I found it hard to retain material.

Basically what everyone else is saying. He is nice and makes a bunch of dad jokes, his wooclap questions are very basic, you would walk out of class expecting yourself to be a geneticist after the lecture, just to be slapped, but a brutal midterm that has the most obscure marking scheme ever. The final exam was nothing short of horrible as well.

He has an upbeat personality and is clearly a caring person. However, teaching methods are not made to set up students for success. Lectures consisted of examples which weren't reflected in evaluations. Midterms were very difficult, as he looks for very specific keywords and feedback is minimal. Final exam was also super difficult.

The lecture outcomes and learning goals were useless as his questions on the midterms were unrelated. The midterms themselves were not terribly difficult but the insanely specific grading scheme made it hard to do well. The professor has this idea that he is an amazing educator but underprepared us and made it feel like it was our fault.

Colin thinks he is a good educator but in actuality he focuses on the most useless concepts. I feel like I gained nothing from going to the lectures. He has a failed version of a reverse classroom style as he never really explains concepts prior to lectures and does just does practice. His marking scheme is also incredibly unfair. STAY AWAY!!!

Take this course in french. At least, the other class just requires you to practice problems and you'll be ready to for exams. With Monpetit, you literally don't know what to study and what to expect. Marking scheme extremely precise and difficult. Really disappointed by him especially since he keep preaching the benefits of his teaching method.

Genuinely upsetting course, I attended every class and tried my best to follow along with the material but this man just cannot teach. Attend his lectures if you mainly want to hear about things that in no way pertain to the material you have to learn. Half of the time I had no idea what his point was. Tests were awful, all in all a terrible prof.

All around bad prof. Shows easy concepts in class, makes you think you'll do great, only to slap you in the face with his midterms and final which are exponentially harder than what is seen in class, and the marking scheme requiring you to mention words that were not taught. Needless to say, don't take his course if you don't absolutely have to.

The worst lecturer I've had at uO. Got a bad grade despite hours of studying and successfully following examples he taught in class. This guy doesn't know how to teach at all - leaves all his slides blank, spends entire lectures making jokes, and screws you over on exams that look NOTHING like what you learned in class. I thought this class will be fun since it is genetics, but i was so wrong. I was doing well on the midterms, till the final exam. The final exam was nothing alike the midterms or the material learned in class. I wish midterm prepared as for the final, but the material was not even the same!!!

I rarely rate profs on rmp but this professor was so bad that | decided I should. His marking scheme is awful and honestly he prays on peoples downfall but makes it look like he's on your side. Have a conversation with him and you'll see how fake of a person he is in class. Good luck to anyone taking this class is was genuinely a nightmare.

The lectures are composed slides with images and barely any text, a bunch of practice problem which may seem helpful but DO NOT prepare you for the midterms or exam whatsoever, and useless anecdotes that are a waste of time. He just talks in his lectures. Doesn't seem so professional either and just gives a general idea of the topic. I failed one block of the course, so I failed the entire course. He does not allow bell-curves. Honestly, worst prof. The exam was worth 65% of the final mark.

My overall grade was 49% in this course in block 1 (midterms and final) after the exam. Suddenly I see Professor Montpetit walking down the street! All I had to do was tell him I needed one more percent to pass and he said no no no! Thanks Professor Montpetit, you finally came up clutch!

If there are any other options go with them not going to sugar coat it. His lectures consist of making fun of other faculty members and introducing simple ideas just to smack you with obscure questions and the most dreadful marking scheme. He flaunts high averages just to slap you with his passive aggressive attitude when announcing the averages

I had this guy in a previous year but I was thinking about some of the worst professors I've had throughout my undergrad and on top was this professor. Talk about someone who is two-faced and this guy is the first person you will think of after having taken his class. Remember that the content isn't hard. He just hates you! Goodluck looooool!!!

honestly dont even know why dont they have another prof for this class. you go to class feeling confident, answer all in class questions, study as hard as you can, go through the in class questions. You step into the exam and it is like you have done none of the above. dont know what else you can do.

THIS IS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER SEEN! The prof spends more than half the time talking about irrelevant stuff and then gives you the worst exam of your life. The questions he did in class were WAY easier than the ones he gave in exams. If you suffered with the class questions good luck on your final, if you didnt suffer, good luck too :) RUN

I wish there was another professor for this course. The questions on his midterms look NOTHING like the questions he gives us in class. Reading the textbook and doing the practice exams won't even help. His lectures are very engaging but he spends a lot of time rambling which is annoying when you're trying to understand a difficult concept.

I took this class because I thought genetics was interesting. It wasn't even a required class for my program, only a science elective. This is one of the worst classes i've taken. He gives lot's of practice questions during the lectures, but once you get to the tests, they are NOTHING like the questions. Failed both midterms and dropped the class

You cant even take a a picture of your copy to see what you got right. Horrible prof got my worst grade in his class and took the fun out of a subject i really liked.

I don't know where to start, I was super excited to start learning about genetics and he made it seem that it would be fun early on. However, his assessments were brutal and the marking scheme was SOOO to the point. Overall I don't recommend him.

cant teach if his life depended on it. If a diff prof taught the course it wouldn't be nearly as bad. The man doesn't even post the answer keys to past exams?? The stuff he teaches in class doesn't feel that difficult cuz its literally just Wooclap but when u get to the exams, all I can say is good luck cuz he is out to get you.

Lectures are messy and unorganized. I never felt like I was learning much in this class. Yet, the midterms are insanely difficult with strict marking schemes. You have to teach yourself most of the time. DO NOT take this class if you don't need to, he makes it so much harder than it should be.
