Dr. Wallace explains concepts very clearly and is more than willing to help students. Went to his office hours several times and he was very friendly and offered helpful tips for success. Being in his studio section was especially beneficial (try to get into it if you can). For tests, study the studios! Most questions and concepts come from those.
At UNC, Dr. Wallace is one of the best professors you can have for Physics. In 115, the content was complex; the tests were a challenge to prepare for; and the Mastering assignments were cumbersome. But Dr. Wallace is always there to work with you, whether it's understanding the material or discussing what it takes to succeed in a rigorous course.
Dr. Wallace is the friggin best. The class isn't easy, you have to pay attention, do all the work, ask questions and study, but making sure you understand the material is his top priority. He really cares about his students and not only knows what he's talking about, but how to teach!
Funny dude and makes things easy to understand. His lecture is actually enjoyable and I am not a science person. You need to pay attention during class and study for the midterms or else you wont do well. Workload isn't heavy.
My favorite professor. ever. I am actually changing my major to astrophysics because of this man, he's sort of quirky and nerdy but it really works for him, and he's confident about it so his jokes are always pretty funny. Lots of interesting material, it is a lot of visual models and stuff though so if that isn't your style beware.
Dr. Wallace is a fair grader/test writer. He's funny, he's good at explaining, and when I've been able to reach him, he's more than willing to help outside of class. He was late to multiple office hours though, which was irritating because I'm on a tight schedule too, and I feel like he canceled office hours TOO often. Overall, okay.
Took ASTRO to get my science class out of the way and really enjoyed it. Wallace is a really smart and nice guy who will always answer questions in or out of class. Does a good job explaining hard topics. Homework is weekly but doable. He's very clear about what will be on tests. Few trick questions, plus he drops lowest of your 3 exam grades.
Dr. Wallace is a really nice guy. He covers the material in very colloquial terms for a class that can be a bit... alien (ba-dum-tiss) His class is incredibly straightforward, he gives 1 homework assignment per week, which never took me longer than twenty minutes. Awesome workload, and interesting class! Great for a science credit or an elective!
Compared to the overall horrible nature of the physics department at UNC, Wallace seems to be a good choice. He was good at explaining the material in class, although his tests were extremely difficult and often based on things not touched on in lecture. The final was not unreasonable and a large chunk of grade comes from studio. Would recommend.
Professor Wallace was my favorite professor of freshman fall semester. His lectures are engaging and funny and held my focus in topics I had no interest in. He's great at giving you space to do your own work, while being right there for assistance if needed. I got a B- in the class, mostly through my own shaky study habits. Great professor!
He was a solid teacher and really makes sure that you understand the material.
One of the best teachers I've ever had even though it was a 200+ person lecture class. He is so passionate about what he teaches, it's contagious.
Great professor, highly recommend because hes passionate not only about astro but also about teaching
I came into this class extremely excited because I enjoy space and I was really excited to learn more. Nope. It was honestly my most boring class this semester, which means that it was even worse than Calculus. He's enthusiastic about subject matter, but since I hated being there it just put me in a bad mood every day. Also, does not do curves
I am a junior, and I have seen my fair share of lecturers. Dr. Wallace is by far the most engaging lecturer I have had at UNC. Every class feels designed to keep students engaged. I will say, this class is not about memorizing planet facts. It's sort of an intro to physics, earth sciences, geology, and more in the context of the solar system.
Dr. Wallace is incredibly enthusiastic about what he does, and I genuinely enjoyed his lectures, even if the pace was a bit slow sometimes. Do understand that astronomy is physics-based, though, so don't be caught off guard like some of my friends when there's (minimal) math and some more physics-y content.
Clear lectures and pretty easy material. Tests are multiple choice and homework is short and only due weekly. Would recommend!
Prof. Wallace is one of the best profs I've ever had at UNC. He is clear at explaining concepts, extremely helpful in office hours, and is honestly the nicest person. He holds extra office hours very often, and he never gets frustrated with explaining questions that he explained multiple times already.
Dr. Wallace is a phenomenal professor. Took a massive quantity of dense physics material ranging from fluid dynamics to optics and made it really easy to digest, and very enjoyable. He records his lectures and posts them on Sakai, which is really helpful in preparing for his exams. Dr. Wallace sets up his students for success in a difficult course.
It's physics, so it's gonna be hard, but Prof. Wallace was excellent about bringing things to a level that I could understand. He was also really good about giving feedback, but we did have a lot of tests over the course of the semester. If you have to take 115, I would definitely recommend Prof. Wallace.
Professor Wallace is an incredibly clear and gifted lecturer. He takes difficult concepts and distills them to a few formulas/ideas you need to know per lecture. I ENJOYED taking PHYS115 over the summer. Most of the applications are pretty interesting, and even when it is more dry, the class is super well-structured. One of my fav profs!
Truly, the best professor I've ever had. Dr. Wallace takes steps to ensure that every student is given the opportunity to succeed regardless of their circumstances. He's a kind, compassionate person with an amazing ability to teach and gives every importance to feedback given by students.
Dr. Wallace is himself a good teacher, but Dr. Klotsa (assistant professor) teaches most of the class. He maybe taught a total of 10 Modules out of 30. He's a nice guy & tries to make physics interesting. He does a good job of explaining, but he's not so good at replying to emails. He also made our 4th midterm 1 week before our final exam #notcool
Great guy and tries his best to make lectures entertaining, and at first it worked pretty well. This may have just been me, but I just kept wanting to fall asleep every class. Not even because he was a boring lecturer but because the class moved so slow on the most basic topics. Although, I might try getting a second major in Physics now from this.
Prof Wallace was one of the best lecturers I've had at UNC. He is enthusiastic about the material and presents it in an engaging way that held my interest for the entirety of every class. Tests are difficult, but your grade is padded by homework/studio assignments so don't worry if physics doesn't come easy to you. 10/10 take it with Wallace!
This professor is an amazing lecturer. He puts emphasis on topics that he wants you to know, and really cares about his students. He was more than willing to meet with me when I had questions about how to do better on exams, and offered really good advice that actually helped my grades improve. One of UNC's finest. Do your warmups & homework!!!
As someone who was taking physics for the first time and not a fan of science, i was terrified, but he is helping me survive. Don't get behind!!!!
Professor Wallace is exceptional. He made physics at 8 am my favorite lecture - not many professors could do that! He is contagiously enthusiastic, great at explaining concepts multiple ways, and happy to help you out one-on-one. One of the best professors I've had at UNC!
Prof Wallace is an incredibly clear lecturer. My only qualm is that this course is designed for pre-med students who are scared of math. If you happen to be good at math, this class is a little (very) baby-ish. Regardless of who you are, this class is a pretty easy A if you show up and put in effort (I mostly lost points for skipping lab).
Prof. Wallace is AMAZING. Had a previous semester of PHYS with another prof and Wallace actually made me like physics (what?!). He's really funny, an amazing lecturer, and his explanations make everything better. He really cares about his students. Obviously the class is a lot of work but I wouldn't take it with anyone else!
You're in good hands. He's great at explanations, layouts are clear, and there are plenty of ways to try and seek for help.
Had him for both 114 and 115 and was certainly a solid choice. He is very passionate when he teaches which is always nice
He is honestly one of the smartest profs I've ever taken. He is an awesome instructor. Exams are fairly challenging and you have fifty minutes to answer roughly around 5-8 short answers. However, I would not recommend taking this if you are a freshman and are taking another science course. I did that and I awfully regretted doing thistake it slow!
Easily the best prof I have had at UNC! His lecture style is clear and well-paced, he handles questions well and you get the sense that he is on your side. As someone who had NEVER taken a physics class in high school, I came into this class scared but I felt that the class was well-structured and Prof Wallace taught the content very well.
He is an overall nice guy. He is very clear during lectures and cares about his students.
I liked Dr. Wallace's teaching style and I found him easy to understand, especially if I understood the reading. However, the example questions we used in class were always much less difficult from those on the exams so it was hard to gauge how you stood. I got a private tutor for this class because I found it so difficult.
Great professor and clear when he teaches. His tests can be tricky from what he has taught but it really enhances your learning. Don't give up because you will earn what you have worked for. Great guy overall
professor Wallace is funny and friendly, I really enjoyed his nerdy jokes. he's great at breaking down complex concepts into easier things. he is always willing to help. go to the Friday Q&A sessions, take advantage of his office hours, he really does everything he can to help you out.
I am terrible at physics, but he managed to keep me motivated to do well. Exams are not graded too harshly and are reflective of topics taught in class and in the assignments. Even if you do bad on the exams, the studio, warm-ups, and homework can help alleviate your grade. Provides multiple review, Q&A, and office hour sessions to help you also.
Professor Wallace is enthusiastic and explains lectures well. The material isn't impossible to understand but there aren't many practice problems given during lectures/labs that are similar to the exams. The exams don't have many questions and TAs grade harshly.
Wallace is an amazing professor. He's very knowledgeable and really cares about his students. He is great at breaking down hard concepts and goes slow enough that the amount of content is not overwhelming. He is also very funny and keeps class interesting
Professor Wallace is great! He explains complex topics in a clear and organized manner. Tests can be tricky, and I highly recommend going to Wallace's office hours because he will explain any problem you're struggling with. This class isn't easy, but Wallace's manner of teaching makes it very doable and less stressful!
Dr. Wallace is the best STEM prof you could ask for. Explains concepts really well and clearly cares about his students. The class itself isn't that bad. Exams are more difficult than problems in class, but they aren't too much of a stretch. The final was really hard though, so don't let it catch you off guard! Also no curve, so don't count on it
Prof Wallace is a good lecturer and his slides are helpful but the homework is MUCH harder than the in class questions. Also, 50ish% of the class time you're talking to your neighbor which is kind of a waste of time.
Maybe because it was online ,that this class was so hard. The professors made the tests harder than they usually are to curb cheating but that's not fair for students who don't cheat. They don't curve the class for some reason so do not count on that. Final was harder than usual so don't get blind sided.
After a hard exam 1, he made some fair changes to other exams and the final. With any PHYS class, you can't just do the bare minimum and expect to do well. He provides ample practice exam questions and Q&A sessions, although I didn't utilize the Q&A much. Do well in studio, study the mistakes you make in solving problems, and you should be fine.
Prof Wallace is great! Exams are super fair and exactly like the practice exams and lecture examples. No surprises on exams and so many resources are given to help you prepare. Wallace makes this class very manageable and an easy A
Professor Wallace was an incredible Physics teacher. I owe all success to his explanations in lecture, and his homework assigned are like the tests, which allows you to prepare. If you do the assignments and take good notes, you will do well in this class!
If you have no prior experience with physics this class is going to be hard but Wallace is probably gonna be your best choice.
(fall 2020-freshmen) Overall good class. I'm not really a physics person, but they tried to tie in life science material to engage students more. The studios were kinda tiring, but that also depends on you group.
The studios are very tiring. Lecture was asynchronous however the profs are accessible for any questions. Also, I thought the final exam was unfair, bc some of the questions we had never done anything like that before. I wish the practice exams/materials they provided helped prepare us more. Overall this class was pretty hard for me
physics is always going to be difficult, but Wallace gives great lectures that are super helpful. Studios are a pain, but they do help a lot. Wallace explains difficult concepts in a way that is easy to understand. Tests are typically very similar to the practice problems he provides, so make sure to understand those and you will do fine
Professor Wallace is the best choice to have for this class. I came in with no physics experience, and he made the class fairly easy. The studios can be a lot, but the exams are very fair with no tricks as long as you study and work hard by redoing hw/studios/practice problems. There was some extra credit offered during the semester.
Prof Wallace is one of the best profs I've had at UNC so far. He is great at explaining things in lectures and Q&As. The tests are similar in difficulty to practice problems and you can tell he wants you to succeed. I asked him to explain something I got wrong on an exam and he gave a very helpful detailed explanation (and even gave points back!).
Prof. Wallace does a really good job at explaining things, even if majority of the class gets a clicker question right he'll still take the time to go over it. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, this is probably the only time you can get him to explain anything to you in greater detail. If you have to take physics, take it with him for sure!
Dr. Wallace was very nice and provided clear, helpful lectures. Studios are a brutal time-commitment and did not seem very helpful, and exams were much more difficult than practice materials provided. I really liked Dr. Wallace as a professor due to his high-quality lectures, but the course structure itself has lots of room for improvement.
Dr. Wallace is amazing. He explained every concept clearly. But you still have to work hard for the class. Physics 114 is hard. I barely passed the first test but I went to his office hours, worked hard, and finally got an A overall. The studio is somewhat helpful but the homework is very. You must excel in the homework to do good on the exams.
Dr. Wallace is one of the best lecturers I've had at UNC. The only reason he doesn't get a 5 is because of the large demands made by the PHYS department. It doesn't make sense to demand 6 hours of mandatory class time a week and then expect us to also do homework and learn. At least not for only four CH. If you have to take PHYS, take Wallace tho.
I had never taken a physics class before but Wallace was pretty good. I failed the first 2 exams but ended up putting in the work and passing (Thank GOD). Homeworks are ESSENTIAL to pass even if they take you forever. In terms of stem, having 55% of your grade be exams is pretty good honestly. Studios help with the grade. Wallace was a fine teacher
Wallace is an amazing human being and PHYS 114 is a challenging, but doable course. Tests dont count for too much, ended up with a B+ even though I averaged Cs on the exams. Homework is two 6-question Pearsons a week. Studios can be tiring but put in the work and youll be fine. I had prior physics experience but its not required.
Colin Wallace is a good professor, he just teaches an awful subject. He tried his best to teach students what he can in lectures but its also up to the student to read all the material you need to learn outside of class since 50 minutes isnt enough. Lengthy homeworks every week, studios, and be sure to study for exams, theyll tank your A quick
Professor Wallace cares for his students, but his lectures were confusing at some points and he didn't explain the answers well enough. It would have been better for me to visually see him write them down. After a lecture, he would post pre recorded lectures from other professors and I 100% learned more from them than Professor Wallace.
Three midterms, one final, constant homework and warmups, two two hour labs a week with graded labs. If you have to take this class do it with Wallace, he explains well and is helpful. You are going to have to put in work to do well
Prof Wallace is the best of the three 114 lecturers. His lectures are super engaging and I always leave understanding the material much better than I did before. I wish he taught the entire course and not just sporadically.
Wallace is definitely the best of the three Physics 114 professors! He explains each topic very clearly in lecture, making sure to go over any points of confusion from the previous lecture, and is very helpful outside of class. Studios (2hr labs, twice a week) are a pain, but definitely doable. Wallace genuinely wants you to succeed!
Colin is probably the best physics professor in the department, so if you're taking a PHYS class, take it with him! He makes his lecture easier to understand compared to others and knows how to cover a good amount of material in a little amount of time. He made physics much more doable for me.
Professor Wallace's lectures are exceptional and he does a great job engaging students and demonstrating that he cares about learning. He has a great understanding himself and can not only explain the content and the "what" but also the importance of physics and the course and the "why" behind it. It will take some work but most can get an A or B.
PHYS 114 is taught by three professors and Prof. Wallace is by far the best. He is an incredible teacher and the only reason I was able to do well in this class. If you put in the work and go to lots of office hours, you can definitely do well!
Physics is by no means an easy class, but you can tell Dr. Wallace cares about his students, he's really nice. The exams are worth a big part of your grade but the studios help buffer that. Read the textbook! His lectures summarize the textbook reading, but you won't really understand the lectures unless you've done the reading.
Dr. Wallace is a nice guy and he's a great lecturer. His exams were pretty fair, but this is definitely a challenging course. He responds relatively fast to emails and he's always ready to help his students. Make use of all the study materials offered in the class, you'll need them to do well on the exams.
I took multiple AP physics classes in HS, but Dr. Wallace really emphasized understanding the concepts and cleared up several things that I thought I already knew well! He's very on top of things and somehow explains concepts clearly while also finishing all lectures on time. Lectures were engaging, and homeworks/studios were reflective of exams
Wallace was amazing--great lecturer. If you don't understand something the first time around, he is so approachable and easy to ask questions of. You can tell that he loves his subject and is passionate about teaching. 10 out of 10, would recommend this class for premed/health students, if you work hard you will do well, AND it's super interesting.
Prof. Wallace is the best. He's super kind and was very accommodating to students during the semester. The exams were exactly like the practice tests and huge portion of the grade (25% I think) was from group work in studios that was graded mostly for participation. Definitely recommend Prof. Wallace if you can get in a class with him!
This dude is awesome. He makes a 200 person lecture hall feel like a 15 person classroom. He does a really good job at reaching out to any of the students when they need help during the lecture tutorials that we do during class. He also reaches out to us a lot on canvas about any changes he makes or announcements that he has.
Prof. Wallace is an amazing teacher! His lectures are so engaging and he does an incredible job explaining astronomy even asa tough subject. He is always ready to answer questions/give extra help. If you put in the effort it can be a really fun class! If you're looking for a science credit with a good teacher this is the right one!
He isn't an evil professor, but I absolutely despise the Expert TA system he uses. The homework always takes an absurd amount of time, and many questions are way beyond what was taught in the lecture.
Extremely helpful lectures and lecture tutorials. He and the TAs are always willing to help both in and out of class.
Beware of the midterms and attend the office hours if possible!
He really does care about his students. Even though I did not have a passion for astronomy his engaging attitude and excitement for the course made me interested. All of the reviews on here is completely accurate as he is a great teacher and cares very deeply about everything. His exams are quite like the practice exam he sends out a week before.
Prof Wallace is one of the best professors at UNC. As someone who has 0 interest in physics and astronomy, I took this course for the science credit and found myself researching the minor requirements for astronomy. not difficult just need to show up to class and make an attempt to understand the material to get an A
Interesting lectures and really really cool guy, lots of group work and a few challenging units but the format of the class + exams stays the same throughout the semester so once you get the hang of you're good
Prof. Wallace is super kind, helpful, and passionate. Some of the content in this course is difficult, but individual assignments don't count for much. Light workload. The one thing I hated about this course was the exams were 50 questions in 50 minutes. The exams tanked my grade, but I probably just didn't study enough. Okay course, great prof.
Dr. Wallace is funny, caring, and really helped me improve my semester over the course of the semester. Great prof!
Professor Wallace is incredible. I took this class for fun, and he makes learning the more difficult concepts of astronomy easy. As long as you pay attention during lecture and do the classwork and homework, doing well on the exams is very doable. He is very caring and responsive in class, out of class, and on canvas. Recommending him to everyone
Professor Wallace was engaging and open to questions at any point during the lecture. The content itself was not difficult. There is a lot of homework but it is not too time-consuming.
Professor Wallace is a really nice, understanding teacher. He explains everything very clearly, but some of the midterms are tricky. As long as you study and don't fall behind, you'll be fine in his class
Prof. Wallace was truly excellent. ASTR100 is hard; it contains concepts from physics and chemistry and is at times very difficult to grasp, but prof. Wallace did a good job of clearly explaining the material. If you go to class and ask questions when confused, you'll do fine (don't fall behind because it can get confusing very quickly).
Professor Wallace was truly excellent. I have experience with many other professors in the department, and he can truly teach the material the best. Just make sure to go to class and participate in the PollEv questions, and you'll do fine on homeworks and exams.
I took this class my first semester as a freshman. I didn't have much interest in astronomy before I took the class, but much of the topics covered in class are fascinating and if you get really interested in it, the midterms will not be hard at all. If you pay attention during Prof. Wallace's lectures, you don't need to study much after it.
prof. wallace served in more of an administrative role for this course. he lectured a couple times and was great as usual. if you get the chance, take phys w/ prof. wallace he's the best and easiest physics prof at UNC.
I LOVE Professor Wallace. His lectures are so interested and engaging and he gets everyone excited about astronomy. He also dumbs really hard topics down into small parts so they are very easy to understand! He is so kind and caring (especially when it comes to ARS accommodations) as well as understanding, and he is really good at explaining things
Really nice professor and worked hard to be accommodating for everyone. Class was not hard overall but some homework assignments were tricky and not stuff we learned how to solve in class. Tests were fair and study guides were good practice for test format and question types. Some content areas were cooler than others but overall a good class!
He is by far the most engaging professor I have had in my 3.5 years here. His lectures really prepare you for the exams and make difficult topics interesting and easy to understand. There are a lot of homework assignments, but they don't take long, and most answers can be found in the book or slides.
Colin Wallace is a really good lecturer and the exams are very fair. However, the midterms are very fast paced 50 questions in 50 minutes. Make sure you prepare for this and know it is not necessarily an easy A class.
Dr. Wallace was truly a great professor, very clear lectures and topics are easy to understand as long as you go to class and pay attention. The ASTR 100 class gives students a thorough understanding of nearly all aspects of the universe. Also, there is not much homework. Highly recommend, one of my favorite professors!
Wallace is a great prof! So caring and made lectures so enjoyable. Midterms were tough but fair, and fast paced, study decent and you'll be fine. Homeworks can sometimes be confusing but nothing too bad. Would say that hes a must take while at UNC!
He's a really nice guy and the class was super easy. The study guides were almost exactly like the tests and the tests were just everything was talked about in lecture. There's a workbook for the class that literally does not have an answer key which is really frustrating. There's a decent amount of work with the class but it's not too hard.
Lectures are brief (only lectures for ~25 minutes) and insanely clear. Homework and assignments were easy to complete. He released practice exams that would basically guaranteed an A if you understood the concept of the questions. He does care about attendance but it is done through PollEv.
Did a very good job explaining concepts and had a very collaborative way of teaching. Made lectures interesting and gave little homework. Tests were very similar to practice exams so if you study you will be fine.
This was the first time that this course has ever been taught, yet it was still a great class. Prof. Wallace was a great professor and gave amazing lectures to help you with the exams. I highly recommend taking his class!
Prof. Wallace is one of my favorite professors at UNC! I do NOT consider myself a stem/physics person and I still felt comfortable in his class because he was so good at lecturing and explaining concepts. The energy and enthusiasm he brings to class are infectious and made me excited to learn about astronomy. Highly recommend!
PHYS115 is impossible but Dr. Wallace makes it more manageable. He is a great lecturer but this class is so difficult.
Easily one of the best professors at UNC. Class was very enjoyable and easy to do well if you put in a little effort. Provides many resources to study and makes lectures fun and engaging. Highly recommend!
Loved Prof. Wallace, and the material and lectures were very interesting. There was a decent amount of homework but it was all pretty easy. There were 4 exams throughout the course (3 midterms, 1 final), that were difficult but manageable. He gives you lots of study materials to prepare for them but they were still pretty difficult.
Professor Wallace is definitely one of the best professors I've had at UNC. Class materials are not hard as long as you focus on his amazing lectures. He gave many resources for us to review. There are 3 midterms and a final, and the avarages are around 60% to 70%. Personally I do think is an easy class.
He wasn't terrible, but his lectures were kinda boring. Didn't like the class that much.
PHYS 114 is a lot of work but exams aren't worth much and there is a lot of partial credit. Dr. Wallace drew a lot of problems from the slides, just made them more complex. Timing is tough on exams but was able to get an A despite not doing too well on the midterms. Final was easy.
I really was dreading taking PHYS 114 during SS1, but Prof. Wallace made it as enjoyable as possible. His midterms and the final exam were all fair material and were graded with lots of partial credit. 10/10 recommend Prof. Wallace, he's so caring towards his students and loves what he does!
Class is curved down in a way that high grades are not attainable without extensive understanding. To anyone considering taking this class to satisfy their science credit, this is equally as hard/harder as UNC Chem or Bio, you have been warned. The assignments are relatively easy, but the tests are difficult.
Super knowledgeable in the material and always ready to give assistance. Had to take this class for a first-year requirement, so it wasn't something I'd intentionally do, but I still enjoyed it.
Although he didn't teach Phys 115, he was the coordinator. He was really helpful and communicated well. He was very accommodating after the two lockdowns and cared about the students. Gave us two extra credit opportunities. Got grades back quickly and was fair.
The astronomy/physics that he taught was easy. I don't enjoy his lecturing, to be honest, but most do. I disliked their inconsistency in unlocking homework and warm-ups (sometimes two weeks prior, sometimes one or two days before it was due). There was extra credit for the second quiz and the final exam.
Best lecturer. He's incredibly entertaining and very knowledgable in his field. Cares about all his students.
ASTR 100 is very easy for anyone that's taken any sort of STEM class before. Prof. Wallace is perfect teaching this class, as he explains concepts very thoroughly, and brings a fun vibe to the lectures. Easy homework/classwork every class, and the exams are all multiple choice. If you go to class and answer the pollev, exams are nothing new.
Professor Wallace is truly amazing. He makes the lectures clear and does not assume you enter into class with prior knowledge. There are lots of polls throughout class to gauge your understanding and he is extremely helpful during office hours. He has slides clearly marked with what you do versus don't need to know for tests.
Offers 2h office hour every week. Very nice and patient. Gives clear explanations. Enthusiastic lectures with good pace.
I LOVE Prof. Wallace. He is one of the nicest professors you will ever have. I took this class out of interest. Definitely work heavily, but it is just frequent small assignments. Lectures are extremely engaging, and even though it's a large lecture hall, he cares SO much about each student. I wish I could take this class again. He is amazing!!
Professor Wallace is a nice guy and is easily accessible outside of class, but if you are not a stem major and this is a class for the quantitative reasoning fulfillment, don't take it. The material is difficult and there are probably easier classes you can take to fulfill that requirement.
Great.
ASTR100 is a tough class. I wanted an easy FC-Quant and this wasn't it. If you're trying to fill that requirement, take some easy math class like my friends did. Colin Wallace is a good professor though. Had him for Triple-I. Just a hard class. Lots of HW and tests difficult
Honestly, he is a really nice guy, and he loves astronomy, but as a non-stem major, I did not enjoy the class. Before every class, you must complete a warm-up, sign in for attendance on the silly app, and then submit lecture tutorials and homework. I definitely could've done better in the class if I had tried a little harder, but I got bored.
I learned a lot in this class. There was a lot of work but it was mainly HW, Warm-Ups, or learning checks and no big project. Wallace is super passionate about Astronomy and wants you to be too! Tests weren't easy but were very similar to practices. Had a lot more math and physics concepts than I thought. Good class, but certainly for math people.
The midterms were fair, but the final was awful!!! In most stem courses, the final helps or it at least doesn't hurt. The final took me from a B+ to a C+. I will say that this is a hard class in general, and he might be the best option.
I am not a STEM major, and I'm not great at math. I took this class to satisfy a science requirement. If you are a STEM major this class will probably not be very difficult for you. Prof. Wallace is a good lecturer, and the material is interesting. There is quite a bit of math and physics involved, so be warned.
Great guy and gives good lectures. Academically easy for anyone with a STEM background but it had so many random requirements it was hard to keep track of everything and easy to forget things that impact your grade. Requires multiple textbooks, 3 different websites, and an annoying app for attendance. Overall alright class but I regret taking it
I really enjoyed Professor Wallace's lectures and you could tell he really loved teaching this class. You do need to review a lot for exams and pay attention during lectures. I am not a STEM major nor have I ever taken any class like this before but I think if you are willing to put the time in it is a good course.
The class is structured extremely well. He gives a short lecture and then the rest of the time is spent doing the in-class homework and practice questions on PollEv. I didn't find any of the content too difficult and the homeworks don't take long to complete. Highly recommend if you're looking to fulfill a science credit.
Clear and great lectures. Exams are not easy-- don't be fooled by them being weighted low because the final is worth a lot and it will bring you down if you aren't prepared (my grade went down 10% after the very difficult final). Pay attention during studio because concepts may be on exams. Wallace is a great prof and best prof I've had for phys
Great and easy lectures. Homework can be hard at times but barely affects your grade if you get a few questions wrong. Midterms and final are easy if you study the material. Just make sure you keep up with all the warm ups, lecture tutorials, and homework. (he drops a few assignments) overall easy class
Mandatory attendance (you get 3 absences), daily homework/reading, 3 midterms, and a final. Overall, easy class if you keep up with the daily small assignments and pay attention in lecture. It's math and logic heavy at times so it's hard if that's not your fav. As a math major, it was a breeze. Interesting and a great elective for lab credit.
Dr. Wallace is extremely clear in his lectures, fully explains all concepts, and gives very fair tests. He is a wonderful professor who is very receptive to his students.
A really great and caring professor. My grade should not scare you aware. You can perform well in this class if you put in the work - there's a lot of it. I definitely recommend taking ASTR 100 with this professor!
One of the most organized and caring professors. Explains thoroughly and wants everyone to understand the content. Knows his audience. For the class: devote yourself and you can do well.
Professor Wallace is a great professor who has a good sense of humor and explains topics thoroughly. He is very accessible outside of class. The class isn't hard at all, but don't forget to submit lecture tutorial checks. Would recommend to nonmajors.
He makes it very clear what you need to know for the midterms by marking each slide. There weren't any surprises content-wise and as long as you generally keep up with the material, its an easy class. If you're a stem major it is not hard at all. i was .10 from an A and studied the night before all midterms and final.
I LOVE Prof. Wallace. He is an incredible professor who is exceptionally passionate about the material. On top of that, he is the most understanding professor I've had at Carolina, which I think is so impressive because this class had roughly 300 students. He makes resources heavily available for studying and is accessible outside of class as well.
This class is so much more holistic than just aliens! Learning about atmospheres, rocks, using formulas. You'll enjoy this class if you want to a little bit of physics, chemistry, biology, math, geology, etc. Sometimes I didn't feel that his lectures prepared me for the work, but overall, he was an enjoyable, engaging professor.
One of the best professors I have had here! He structures his lectures very well and tells you exactly what you need to know for exams, with lots of practice included in lectures. I took both PHYS 114 and 115 with him and it is so clear he cares very much about his students and their success - definitely recommend!
Professor Wallace is hands down the best lecturer at UNC Chapel Hill, and maybe in the world. While the astronomy topics may not always be seem to be the most interesting, his classes are always informative and engaging, and he does a great job at thoroughly explaining the concepts. His excitement is super contagious, and you'll love the class.
This class is not it. The title makes it sound so much more interesting than what it actually is. Feels like a trap class. I took to fulfill a FC and I am regretting my choices as I cram for the final. Do not take unless you truly enjoy astronomy.
Collin is far too happy to be teaching physics. This man is always grinning but then writes some odd conceptual exams. Not a fan, but it is nice to see how passionate he is about physics.
Prof. Wallace's ASTR100 class is well-structured with engaging lectures and manageable homework. The content can be math-heavy, but using resources like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook makes studying more efficient. Overall, a great elective for fulfilling science credits.
Took this to fulfill my Natsci credit and Professor Wallace was the thing I liked most about the course. It's clear he loves the topic and wants you to like the topic. I didn't know there would be pretty much every type of science incorporated in the class, so look out for that if you sign up. Overall, love his energy, but the class was mid.
Prof. Wallace is nice and enthusiastic however the content is really hard to conceptualize for non stem majors. I took this to fulfill a gen ed and I wish I chose something else. I studied for hours for each exam and consistently got bad grades. He also includes trick questions on the exams which is annoying
Do not take this class if you do not have a stem background. I was able to understand what Prof Wallace was teaching on the slideshows in class but on the exam it seemed like every
Colin was a great professor and was very consistent with the syllabus. I am just not great at the course material, but that is a reflection of me, not Colin. Colin teaches what you need to know, however, I do note that there are Lecture Tutorials, and you don't know if you are doing the majority correctly because there's no key. Good class overall.
Honestly a pretty easy class. Missed some homeworks early on which messed up my grade. But if you just do the work on time and cram before the test, you'll get an A ez.
No grade buffer for hws/studios which brought me down. Exams harder than lectures, but on par with studios. TA's great for questions. Doesn't round at all (89.9 would be a b+) which is aggravating, could come off as elitist when asking questions and mean in post-exam announcements. Final was pretty bad. Co-instructor hwan was much better.
Colin is an amazing professor, he's passionate & interesting to listen to. A lot of people get disappointed by this course because we only talk about aliens for ~a week's worth of lectures. However, the other content is fundamental to understanding how we can find aliens. Not a lot of work, & the topics are pretty easy to grasp. Math involved!!
Professor Wallace is an excellent professor and I would highly recommend taking one of his astronomy courses at some point. He is very passionate and explains things very well, although some of the physics concepts may be confusing for those who aren't super good at math. He gives good preparation for exams, although the homework can be difficult.
I really like Professor Wallace as a person. He is super nice, funny, and extremely understanding. He really does care about his students and wants to help. However, despite always feeling like I grasped the concepts from lecture, the homework and test questions were usually different and much harder, and despite studying hard, I got bad grades.
This guy is super chill, definitely take him. Only reason I got an A- instead of an A is cause I missed a couple lecture tutorials early in the year, which are 20% of the grade so don't let that happen.
Gave clear and engaging lectures given the nature of the content. His tests were similar to practice problems, study those and you should be fine.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Professor Wallace is one of the most caring educators I've ever met. He's enthusiastic about what he teaches and will always be sure to explain topics when you have questions. Beware that this class does require a lot of studying, especially if you are not familiar with introductory physics formulas. Worth it!
Really interesting lectures! Uses PollEverywhere frequently for student engagement but doesn't grade based on accuracy, only on participation (PollEv is used for attendance)
Dr. Wallace is very passionate about his field, and he makes his lectures engaging. The class content is also very easy; if you have even a little bit of experience in anything STEM-related, you will do well in this class. The homework assigned is busy work but is definitely manageable. Attendance is required and can affect your grade.
Great Class. I found the topics covered to be very interesting, and Professor Wallace taught the class in a way that made it very engaging. The material is somewhat challenging, but if you are actually interested in the subject matter, this course won't be hard.
Great lecturer, goes into good depth while explaining well. Was fortunate to have him for 114, feels like he really knows how to communicate lessons to students. Office hours with him were very useful. 114 is not the easiest class, but he teaches the concepts very well. Very kind man as well.
If you have to take a STEM class, take it with him. He's very passionate about the material and explains everything super well. This is a hard class but lectures were always better when he taught them.
One of the worst classes I've ever taken. Everything about the structure makes no sense and I would recommend people don't come to UNC because of the chem and physics departments being as bad as possible.
Colin is a great lecturer, but the class is co-taught (my other prof was Tsui, who wasn't very good) and felt disjointed. The final exam average was 65% with no curve. There was also a grading mix-up where we briefly saw other students' scores—possibly a FERPA issue. Colin was solid, but the course had structural issues.
I liked this class better than 114 but overall a super hard class that if you can take somewhere else I would. Wallace made an error sending out the wrong FINAL GRADES to students and he had no sympathy at all. Claims he cant bump grades up (ex. 79.9 --> 80) because of the department policy even though he is the head of the department.
Final exam average was a 65% with no curve. Says a lot more about the course than the students.
I received a good grade in Collin's 115 class. My experience was filled with frustration. Wallace contributed to instruction disparities, and the way he handled student concerns was unprofessional.
Just because you got the same grade as your neighbor doesn't mean you're correct, Collin.
Whenever wallace would lecture I always understood the concepts more. He is very clear and good and at explaining physics concepts, I wish he would have taught more lectures. Phys 115 is a hard class, make sure you really understand all the equations and studios to do well on tests
I found Wallace to be entertaining and funny. He's a great lecturer, a major improvement from the mess of 114. Exam 1 and 2 were written fairly and were relatively easy. Exams 3 and the final were much tougher. Physics is a hard subject, but if you are willing to contribute time to studying you will pass easily. TAs graded fair with partial credit.
Dr. Wallace is a great lecturer and I learn very well from him in class! He listens to feedback from students as well. Exam 3 and the Final this semester were written to be a little more difficult than they should have been in my opinion, but Exams 1 and 2 were easier than expected.
His lectures were very clear, and I learned the material best from his teaching both in 115 and through his online videos from 114. The class is a lot of work and some topics are hard but I think the structure with the studios/homeworks helped me get a lot of practice before exams. Dr. Wallace was also great at answering questions outside class!
The professor is a strong lecturer, but there was a serious breach of student privacy. After mistakenly giving the wrong final score (the average was an F), he made the situation worse by publicly stating it actually belonged to the student with the last name below one's on the roster. This constitutes a clear FERPA violation and requires attention
Wallace's PHYS 114/115 videos have been removed from YouTube!!! Why??? The physics department is trying to make us students fail!!! I am tired of re-watching the recorded lectures, which are filled mainly by pauses for PollEvs and would much rather watch the YouTube videos!!!!
I had Wallace for PHYS 114 and he was amazing. Most fair exams I have ever seen at UNC, no trick questions. PHYS 115 content was more difficult and it was co-taught with a bad professor. Exam 3 and the final both had averages in the 60s and no curve for either. No rounding for grades anymore. Great lecturer but worse course structure now
Dr. Wallace is one of my favorite professors at UNC and his clear and enthusiastic teaching style encouraged me to enjoy learning physics. He is very considerate when asked questions and generally is a gem in the physics department.
He is rude, unprofessional, and he is not understanding of his students. We emailed back and forth about extra credit that would bump up my grade from a B+ to an A- (I was at an 89.86), and he would not budge. He didn't send out a clear announcement about the extra credit (which was geared toward another section btw), and he was rude when emailing.
Genuinely one of the best professors I've had. He is so sweet and funny and you can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to do their best. The class isn't the hardest, but there are definitely parts that are challenging, but Dr. Wallace is amazing.
Im not sure why he doesnt have a 5. he has been an amazing professor. he is so passionate about this class and is so engaging. he makes our whole class laugh and genuienhly wants his student to suceed. he is very responsive over email and has so many TA's that office hours feel like they are a constant. i highly recommend taking his class,
Dr. Wallace is so amazing. I don't plan on taking any more astronomy classes but if I did I would a thousand percent take him again. He really wants his students to do well and he is extremely passionate about what he is teaching. The work load is not bad at all and as long as you study the exams are not bad.
This guy is awesome. I had no passion or interest in Astronomy coming into this class, but Wallace genuinely loves what he does and cares for the students and their success. He is full of energy and knowledge, and such a sweet guy. I would definitely recommend taking this class. He's also hilarious, and always has jokes or funny side comments.
I love professor Wallace. He is sometimes a bit unprofessional but that's what makes him a vibrant professor. He has a good personality and genuinely makes me excited to come to class. There are lots of pauses in class and lots of discussion. There's not too much work outside of class, and is fairly easy.
Professor Wallace is really great, his class that he teaches however is a really difficult class for me personally to understand. I am not a stem major keep that in mind, however he is really passionate and good at what he does. He provides practice exams for everything.
THE best prof at UNC of all time. Even though Astronomy could get tough at some points, Prof. Wallace wants his students to succeed and cares about real progress. Very engaging lectures with a clear-cut breakdown of what's needed before, during, and after class.
he explains concepts very well and always tries to make himself available when he can to help students. He genuinely wants students to succeed and hes very enthusiastic about physics. The class is hard and lectures can become dry sometimes, but he is a good lecturer.
One of the best professors you could take, especially if you're a non-major that needs filler hours or FC credit. Very manageable workload and exams (all multiple choice) that you can very well get high 90s on if you follow his pacing. If you attend class and complete all the work assigned, you will do well. ULA and TA's are super helpful too.
Fair class up until the last minute when the final absolutely tanked my grade. Unclear and misleading grade reporting in emails; I calculated the mean and median myself and they were 57 and 69 respectively. Some major content not taught by main professor and these lectures were impossible to understand even in the recordings.
This class was fairly okay until the end. My god, the final was atrocious!!! With a 59 average, words can not express how much that exam needed to be curved. The questions were quite difficult too. I also do think that having three lecturers for one class is a bit ridiculous
ASTR 100 with Prof. Wallace is amazing! His lectures are super informative and very easy to follow, and his passion for the subject enhances them! Tests are straightforward, all MCQ. Practice exams are very similar to the real ones, so no big surprises. Not hard to get As if you go to class and do the work. Highly recommend, fantastic class!
Awesome guy both teaching and as a personality
Colin is the goat. Best professor I've ever had. He teaches the content VERY clearly and prepares you well for the exams. His class is a weird format: he asks PollEV questions, you respond, he explains. LOTS of homework assignments, lecture tutorials, warm-ups, etc. Very easy to miss deadlines, but overall interesting + easy content (I'm not stem).
Professor Wallace is a super nice guy. You have to pay for 3rd party websites to submit hw on, it was only like $50 though. Lectures are important but not too boring.
Lwk ez - teaches you a lot about space and stuff, but makes you unfortunately realize how small we are in comparison to everything
Dr Wallace is an amazing professor. He is very patient and always willing to help students to grasp the challenging materials. His engaging lectures broaden my understanding over physics, and I would highly recommend taking physics with him!
Professor Wallace is beyond incredible! He is able to break down complex physics material into such simple ways that make immediate sense. And this is coming from someone who absolutely flopped in PHYS 114. The course topics are super interesting and the exams are very fair (except for the final... that was a bit sick and twisted... but we ball).
Dr. Wallace is honestly REALLY good at explaining material, I was happy every time he lectured. I just wish more of 115 was taught by him. Some of the harder content was taught by another co-lecturer. Final was difficult, but doing good on midterms really sets you up well.
There was a lot of material and a lot of graded things to keep up with outside of class like warm ups, homework, and lecture tutorials. Attendance is graded and exams were harder than anticipated just because of how much material there is. Be prepared to memorize lots of concepts, but you can tell Prof. Wallace loves what he does.
Professor Wallace is amazing and so passionate about astronomy. Lectures are mandatory (highly recommend doing the pre-class reading) but he keeps them engaging and breaks complex topics down so they're easy to understand. Lots of outside-of-class work, but he drops multiple lowest grades at the end. Practice exams were similar to the exams.
Took to fulfill focus capacity, ended with an LP because I knew I wouldn't get a good grade. Don't listen to the people saying it's an easy A. Ts was hard asf. Wallace is super nice, but unless you're really into physics, astronomy and have enough time to dedicate to this class, it isn't worth it (ESP FOR PREMEDS.)
I am not a science person but the professor performed a miracle and actually made me enjoy science. He had inspirational quotes at the beginning of each class and played music. He is an amazing lecturer!! I was always interested in what he was teaching. Just a cool dude and a great teacher.
