This is how a 100 level class should be taught, not too hard and not too easy. The exams are all about memorization of definitions so if you study it's not a hard A at all.

I HEART COLLEEN!! Her class was simple, straightfoward, and interesting. If you show up and take notes, you'll pass. I didn't even read the books much - just skimmed. Thankfully, she doesn't care much about quizzes. She'll help you w/ anything. Just a cool person period.

Very helpful, very clear, encourages discussion, even mixes a bit of humor in lectures to lighten the mood up. She's an overall nice person. I would gladly take her again if she were teaching the higher level courses. As for the work load... mostly quizzes, 2 big tests based on two books, and the final, based on the books and the two movies.

WOW! I heart Professor Avedikian! She loves her subject and she really gets into it. She makes sure that her students understand what she's talking about and really cares about her students on top of that.

Great Professor, keeps it interesting and really cares about her students. The course was easy as long as you do the readings. Her Tests aren't difficult as long as you have some clue as to whats going on.

She made me want to become a Soc Major! I felt guilty everytime I skipped her class! Trust me...you really would enjoy going to the class. Its never boring, except when watching videos!

I love her! She is interesting and smart. I had her for her 8 am and i actually went. She has you watch cool movies and talk about interesting things. She is one of the best professors I have had.

She is so nice! such a good teacher, she's funny and understandable. she keeps the whole class's attention and shes smart! love her! also, the tests are WAY easy and she only takes attendance when she wants to (which isnt often) but everyone shows up anyway.

this was one of my favorite classes, it was really easy and the reading were short and interesting we had a midterm and a final were mostly multiple choice and there were several extra credit opertunities in class pop quizzes were a joke and you often got a 100 just for showing up and signing your name i got an easy A in the class

She takes attendence when she wants to and if you're not there then you're going to miss extra points or a quiz u cant make up. Midterm and Final very easy if you pay attention and study. Understanding, Energetic and Smart. Very nice woman who has a bubbly personality and is clear with definitions of terms and assignments. Talks alot. Gives random quizes..usually 3 times a week. 2 inclass tests from 2 seperate books she asks us to read, a midterm, and a final exam. Colleen is really nice, but pop quizzes killed my average. you read these intersection books that are really boring. class is interesting. i got above 95 on all midterms, writing assignments, and final and didn't get A+ b/c of pop quizzes. i didn't go to class so i missed mostly all of them. you need good attendance in her class, but easy class.

Colleen is awesome. She is so helpful and will go out of her way to make sure you do well in her class. Make sure you go to all the classes - "pop" reading quizzes will kill your average if you skip.

Great teacher always willing to help if u need it. Class is pretty easy. Articles she makes you read aren't that bad for the most part.

Awesome teacher and a really easy class. i think i read 3 articles all semester and did fine on the pop quizzes the things were really easy and if u took notes from her which isnt hard (she makes an outline everyday), theres all your answers for the midterm and final! its a GPA booster! take it if you get the chance, youll enjoy it

Loved her she's great! Awesome attitude whenever she comes into class.Material is easy and she is clear with what will be on test. You must read the short stories she assigns from the book cause that is what she gives quizzes on which are frequent quizzes but extremely easy when you do the readings which are also extremely easy.

She was also my advisor and was very helful whenever i contacted her for help.

Ok, she was a great teacher. I found that reading was not truly neccesary if you simply know about the world and are relatively intelligent. Attendance is mandatory, you can miss two classes in which she takes attendance (Name quiz or pop quiz on the reading). Had to read two books, both of which were very good.

I would def. reccomend this class. She was an outstanding teacher and was always willing to help. Gives review sheets and daily quizes on the readings. However, she does drop your lowest 3 quiz grades. Go to class and take the notes and you will be just fine!

Absolutely loved this class. Clear, interesting, and relevant. Colleen has a great sense of humor, and is an absolute sweetheart. It helps to read the articles and books, but I got away with a B+ without doing much homework.

By far the best Proffesor I ever had. She is highly reccomended she explains everything with a fine tooth comb and makes what she is teaching fun. She can get heavy on the work but its usually easy.

she's a great teacher overall. her class is not boring most of the time, and you actually learn something. i definately recommend this class.. it was so easy, sometimes there was a pop quiz on the reading due for that day, only like 2 questions and sometimes she had sign in quizzes. easy midterm, final & writing assignments too.

Greatest teacher I've had so far at UMASS D. She's really funny! Has a funny story for almost everything. Definitely not a boring class. Gives a quiz every friday from the readings. If you keep up with the readings and the notes you should be fine.

had her for 101 and 102 the best quizzes most day so yeah you have to do some readings but really interesting keeps the class fun two tests and a book assigment very fair grader gives out great study guides highly reccomened for a elective

Great Professor. Always willing to help you out when you need it. She does have you read an article before class and take a mini 1 or 2 questions quiz. But there are enough of them that's ok if you miss 1 or 2. Highly recommended for those interested in Sociology or Criminal Justice

Great professor, definitely take SOC 101. If you come to class most of the time you will do great. She gives very short quizzes in the very beginning of class on the reading for the day but they are not very hard and she ends up dropping 2 anyway. These are only 10% of the grade. Also there are 2 in class papers on 2 books but also very easy.

So far one of my favorite professors here! She really desires to help people and wants her students to get a great grade in the class. Overall, the class is pretty straight forward and she keeps it interesting with sharing entertaining stories from her life that relates to the topic.

She has a fast paced witty style with lots of humor. Coers a lot of material but gives exam guidelines. The tests are not really that hard. A great intro to Sociology.

Honestly, one of the best teachers I've ever had in my life. If you do the work, you'll have no problem doing well. The class is laid back, yet I still feel like I learned SO much that semester. I don't know how she does it, but her stories and teaching methods really stuck with me. Looking for another class of hers to take in the future.

Hands down an amazing professor. In this class you really do want to do the reading because her lectures are interesting. Yes, there is a lot of reading, and yes there is daily quizzes, however, if you pay attention in class and participate, it's impossible to fail. The work isn't rocket science if you pay attention. This class is beyond easy. Use it to fill one of your Gen Eds. There's weekly online hw, and only 2 tests (midterm and final). Both tests are only made up of Multiple Choice vocab terms.

soc lab was easy. She makes an effort to help if you need it. Helps when you ask. Grading straight forward, study you get an A

I laughed so hard in this class every day. She is really funny and talks about current events at the beginning of class which is interesting. The online exams are straight from the textbook and the midterm and final are basically vocab quizzes. The essays aren't hard and she grades them pretty easily.

Professor avedikian is a really good professor. Her lectures are interesting. In the class all you have to worry about is online tests and quizes that are due every week. Which are easy because you can have your book with you. The only in class tests are the midterm and finals. Easy if you study. She takes attendence so go to class.

She is awesome. I was in a bing lecture hall, we used Pearson text books and took our quizzes online. They are pretty easy and you can take them twice, she gives many opportunities for extra credit, which gets added to your final exam grade. Notes are very easy to take in her class since she makes outlines on the board then talks about everything

By far the best professor I've ever had. I took this course as just a free elective in my junior year and if I took this earlier, I would probably have switched my major to sociology. Colleen made this class interesting and really peaked interest. She is the best. Never skipped this class, thats how good it is.

Avedikian is easily my favorite professor at UMD. She makes class fun, is compassionate and intelligent, and you leave each lecture having learned something new. It would be a mistake to not have at least one class with her before graduating. As long as you have the book and do all of the online exams/quizzes, you'll end with an A in the class.

I absolutely loved her. If you have the chance to take her at all, you won't regret it! SOC 101 was pretty basic; sat in class, talked, left. Our assignments were all online. She was very forgiving when it came to late work. Wish I could take her again!

She should be a comedian! Her classes are very easy I've had her since freshman year. I heard she's leaving umd next semester but she still deserves the rating! Class based on society, pretty general stuff. Tests were on the required txt but she's an easy grader and you can easily get an A-B if you show up to class & take notes. Open notes test =)

Colleen is absolutely fantastic! When I posted that I'm uninformed about the gender wage gap, she emailed the whole class with links about it. The textbook is online and free! Next time I need a class, I'm looking for her.

Dr. Avedikian does a very good job of relating to her students, as well as keeping the lectures in good taste. That said, if you don't like feminism, you may be unhappy for a week or two, as it's a major focus during the class.

Colleen was an amazing professor, she always has interesting stories to tell that goes along with the lectures. There are online quizzes which are really easy, there is also a research paper at the end of the semester, she is a fair grader and is always around to help students. I would take her class again. There is also an online textbook access.
