Very clear teaching style.. Goes a bit quickly, but not too fast if you keep up with your work.

Challenging, but very clear and thorough. Uses practice exams and is very personable.
She has a very hard time keeping the class' attention. Doesn't curve because "she doesn't believe that we should benefit from how well someone else did"
The class could've been more interesting if she taught it better. She mainly use pictures/diagrams from the text and describe those instead of words. She has a terrible way of asking questions on the exams. They are not very straight forward. Besides all of that, I suppose she is a good teacher.
She is a very interesting teacher, good humor
Very funny, but a tough grader. If you go to class and fully understand the ideas-not just memorize facts then you will do well. Do not go into this class expecting an A, because very few people will get one. SI is a huge help for genetics!
damn, that class sucked ass. I dont think anyone could need to put in more time just to get a D
gets a bad wrap because shes one of the only UMD profs who actually tests at a college level. you have to actually understand the material, not memorize and regurgitate facts
Always seems to start off the semester happy and cheerfull but turns ugly by the end of the semester
If you go to class, take interest in the subject matter, read the assignments, and study a little before the exams you CAN get an A in her class. I enjoyed her lectures and learned a lot.

Belk isn't the most clear of teachers, but her outfits tend to be amusing. Especially when kids keep count of how many times she wore a shirt in one month.

Either you hate her or you like her. Shes kind of funny and teaches her subject well, i get way more out of the lecure than the lab (which is pointless); even though she hates our class and talks**** about us the the Majors courses.
Ok, here's the thing with Belk: you have to study to do well in her class. But isn't that true of any class? The wonderful part about her is that she tells you exactly what and how to study. She is very clear and works to teach her class just what it needs to know. She is dedicated and knows what she is talking about. I really liked having her!
Very clear on what you neede to know but a difficult class due to the amount of material. If you read the assigned chapters a couple of times in review for the test you will get good scores. I would recommend visiting your TA's for help instead of the professor due to the large class size.
Belk was fine but that other guy she had teaching the second half of the course sucked. He was the worst teacher I ever had. He was never wrong even when he was and he should not be teaching at the U of M Duluth.
She tells to many stupid stories for the amount of people in the class. Her portion of the class is not very helpful in understanding bio... Read the book for sure.
Hsrd but you learn alot
Excellent prof!
Easy to understand

The material is hard and moves at a fast clip. She tells you exactly what you need to know to succeed. Her tests are hard but as long as you come to class and study a little, you will be fine. A very personable professor. Attendance is not required.
she was really cool and kept the material interesting at all times
She's not only really a great Bio prof. but she's also pretty damn funny. She keeps the class interested by devoting about 2 minutes per day to a little anecdote where she makes 100% of the students ROFL. Good teacher though, seriously. She goes back to cover ground, to make sure all those understand, but doesn't dumb it down. thumbs up.
Professor Belk is too hot to trot. I thought you might enjoy a pepper. Your picture should probably be changed because it's not a very good one. If biology in general didn't totally suck, I'd like you a lot more. It's not your teaching. It's the material that sucks.
The leopard skin blouse was very nice and it made Biology so much more interesting.
fantastic but hard prof
she deserves a pepper for sure!
She is a great teacher that knows what she is talking about. she reviews well before tests and gives you a practice test so you know what to expect
Funny moments everyday, but keeping a learning environment.
Good professor but hard on students and lets them out 45 seconds early.
Every once in a while a person comes along who defies the odds, who defies logic, and fulfills an incredible dream. On behalf of all the students of UMD, it is with tremendous honor that we present this rating which will stand always as a celebration to the indomitable spirit of science. UMD salutes its favorite professor, Colleen Belk!
Good fair professor, very difficult, but clear in what is expected.
simply delightful
LOVE HER!!!
very very very good
The pace of the class is just about perfect. She reviews the material we learned the previous day very quickly so that we are all caught up, goes on to the next topic, and has practice tests, which help out a lot. The student study guide is a wise purchase, but if you read the chapter before and after lecture and pay attention, you'll do fine.
Very clear, appears to thoroughly enjoy the subject.
Best Professor ever!
Awesome teacher, one of my favorites
This professor is by far the best on I have had in college, and she has a way of teaching that helps you to understand everything that does not make sense by just reading the textbook. Plus, she is hilarious, and it's the one class I look forward going to! Oh and plus, she is HOTT stuff!
Overall a good class. If you go to class and pay attention, you'll be fine. I found SI to be a HUGE help, too.
Sweet prof with some fun stories to spice up the day. Very easy going and easy to talk. Keeps things interesting and funny without straying too far from the subjects. I would reccommend her to anyone.
She was rude to the students and made me feel like I was wasting her time to be in her class. I felt she found it annoying when people asked questions, and we should have more prior knowledge of the material, even though it was an entry level course.
Belk is a good professor. The people here who says she sucks probably suck at biology. She is interesting, knowledgeable, and keeps the class going straight forward. The only people she ****es at are those talking during her lecture or those with cell phones going off all the time. These people should get ****ed at.
professor tells extremely funny stories that are bound to make you laugh
Uses the ppt. slides and everything you need to know is there. She's a great instructor and you will ONLY like her if you have interest and commitment to studying biology. Always willing to help if you have questions, so don't be afraid (unless you're THE moron). Ask any successful bio students who took her class and they'll highly recommend her
I like Belk because she knows how to weed out biology majors that really don't belong in the club. Her tests are a bit on the difficult side, but weren't unreasonable.
great professor. go to class- her powerpoints are helpful for the exams.
Pretty good explanations in lecture. Her exams are a bit difficult, but doable. If you read your book and summarize each chapter like she tells you to do, you'll do good.
i liked her
Very funny, easy class
Show up and take notes. Everything on the test is covered at some point in class. The tests are still hard but it is very possible to do good. Plus, she tells random and very funny stories. So it's worth going to class.
I loved her, I only got a C because I accidentally slept through a test. But, that doesn't mean she's too easy. I just worked my butt off to make up for it. She's pretty funny, very clear. I felt like I learned a lot. But, you do need to study and be sure to read. Lab is extremely easy. I definitely recommend her.
Shes extremely helpful. She knows her biology enough to keep it interesting for the class. MAKE SURE you read and attend class. if you do those two things you will pass the class
Belk was a awesome prof! One of my favorites... She definitely knew her stuff. As long as you read, do the MasteringBio, make summaries like she suggests, and study for the exams you'll do well. The exams actaully brought my grade up and the lab brought it down cuz I had a terrible TA. HIGHLY recommend Belk.
Probably my favorite professor. She's funny but also keeps control of the class. She pauses now and then for questions so taking notes isn't hard. This class takes time but you'll really learn something. I missed an exam (overslept) and she let me retake it. If your respectful, honest and don't complain she'll help you out. She's strict but fair.
She was a great professor! She has a great sense of humor that keeps class interesting and able to pay attention to. She is very smart and asks for questions often. She's great!
Belk is awesome! She is my favorite prof at UMD. As long as you read the book and go to her lectures and make sure you really understand what she is saying you will do fine in the class. She is also very funny and accepts questions well.
Class was a joke. Is equivalent to my high school Bio. class. With that said, you STILL HAVE TO DO YOUR READING! Dont expect to get an A if you dont do your work. She gives out extra credit which really helps with your grade. If you go to lecture, all the labs, and do your reading, I would be shocked if you didnt get 100% in that class
Colleen Belk is a great professor! I would recommend her to anyone! Attendance is not necessary but very entertaining! I love her!! (Also Hello to her rents!!) :)
I HATE biology but LOVED her bio and society class. She's my favorite at UMD and helped me when I had bad grades. She's super funny, and helpful. Highly recommend her... be sure to not miss class for chapter 19 and 20.
Couldn't ask for anything better. Easily the best Science with a Lab class ever!
She's hilarious, always tells some kind of funny story that is relevant to the topic she is teaching. The exams can throw you a little, but she gives you more than a chance to do well if you go to all the classes and do the Extra Credit assignments. Oh..and NO cell phones, don't miss her class on chapters 19 & 20 either ;)
I LOVE Belk! One of the best professors at UMD. Although I thought the class was hard I loved going to class everyday. She loves to tell the class funny stories (some relevant and some not). She is a typical mom who is kind of a dork but you gotta love her.
Love her! Took her for Bio and Society and she honestly wants you to pass. Offers loads of extra credit that gets added to test scores and she's just so funny. Makes it so that you don't have to come to lecture if that's not how you learn, puts the extra credit online if possible so you have no excuse not to pass this class with flying colors.
I hate to say this, but she's honestly a good Bio professor. Her class is very hard, but she gives you everything you need to succeed & there's really nothing bad to say about her. That said, her class screwed my GPA, so don't take Gen Bio unless you need to (but that's probably pretty obvious already).
Belk was great. No easy A's, her class can be difficult. I would definitely recommend her.
I enjoyed her class. It was very helpful. She is a great teacher!
She is awesome! She explains everything that you need to know in great detail and if you don't understand it she will go over it again. She is very respectful to her students and if you study and pay attention her tests aren't too bad. I really enjoyed her class and would take another class with her any day!
Show up every day and do the extra credit. It helps your grade a ton. She is helpful and nice but her exams always seem pretty difficult for a society class. Random questions appear from nothing you've studied..
She was my favorite professor by far! Lectures are interesting and she makes it fun to learn! As long as you attend lectures and study you'll do fine!
Not helpful will not help you unless have written summaries. cannot teach her way out of a paper bag! AVOID AT ALL COSTS slide show sucks! save your money
slide shows are not helpful you have to teach yourself everything. One of the worst prof here at UMD. Makes you feel stupid and puts you down. SHE CAN'T TEACH!! AVOID
She is a very RUDE person and needs to understand that she is a bad teacher and needs to just leave teaching. The textbook is your only help and the final paper is graded so harshly that smart kids get F's on it!! Avoid this mean teacher!!!!!!
Horrible, just horrible. Avoid. Rude and horrible.
Don't listen to the people that say she's awful! She is a wonderful teacher. She comes across as rude in lecture, but only because she has a sarcastic sense of humor. If you talk to her one-to-one she will help you with anything. By far my favorite professor of this semester! I learned so much in her class.
She was great! Sarcastic, which some people see as rude, but she doesn't mean to offend. She was so helpful when I talked to her one on one! Not very flexible, but that doesn't mean she's a bad professor. Learned a ton. The tests are straightforward. Not easy, but if you skim the chapter, powerpoints, and do the online activities you'll be fine!
Honestly, I really enjoyed this class. I had no interest coming in and was terrified of her, but she turned out to be on of my favorite professors. As long as you want to do well, you will. Don't talk in her lectures or she will call you out. She gives you in class time for assignments. I highly recommend this course! Good luck! :)
Professor Belk was a great professor. She made class fairly interesting for a gen ed course. I was sick during the course and fell behind and she was very willing to work with me and let me catch up. I also appreciated the helpfulness of the grad students who taught the required labs for the course.
Belk explained things well and gave clear expectations for the class. Sometimes she was more distracted than the students and whined, but she was a great professor. Just read the book, come to class, and do what she says and you'll do just fine.
Belk is a skilled professor who genuinely cares about whether her students understand the material or not. Her tests can be somewhat tricky, but they are fair (granted I am not the best test taker). Go to class, work hard, and you'll succeed. She is a believer when it comes to you get what you work for. All in all, I would recommend this professor.
Belk is a great professor. Tells you exactly what her expectations are. Always available for extra help. Had her for Bio I, final exam was not cumulative, just regular exam. Also give extra credit! TAKE HER, SHE ROCKS!!
Gives some extra credit. Tests come from the powerpoint slides generally. Wants you to know big concepts. Final exam was not cummulative. Cracked jokes and had lots of fun. I studied a lot for my A, but Belk prepared the students very well. Belk offers to read a summary of each chapter you have written to help you prep for an exam. Very kind
Highly recommend taking online BIOL 1001 with her. She is the nicest professor I have had. Labs are done in your room with a lab kit, they are not hard. She always was very helpful and explained things really well through videos, photos, and online chat. Tests are not that tough if you do the reading and assignments! EC is also given frequently.
Belk is the best bio prof I've had at UMD! Her lectures are easy to understand and the information to know for the exams is clearly outlined. Going to her office hours, she is super nice and is willing to help you! TAKE HER!
Biology of Women was an informative and useful class. Professor Belk is a tough grader, but very knowledgeable about the biology field (she authored a textbook!). She was able to keep the class interesting and applicable to our lives. If you go to her office hours, she is very willing to help and get to know students. Would definitely take again!
She will help you out if she can see you are putting forth effort.
Professor Belk really engages the lecture by incorporating real life examples and situations where, the criteria she is teaching, relates.
Belk is an awesome professor! Her lectures are crystal clear and she makes sure you understand things before moving on. It may seem like she's a tough grader and person at first but she's really funny throughout the semester. The tests are kinda tough but it's not too bad if you go to the lecture and read the textbook.
Awesome professor. As a non-bio major, I was so happy to have such a clear set of expectations and easy-to-understand lectures. One of my favorite professors by far. Helpful, funny, really cares about what she's teaching and if you're understanding. Tons of opportunities to get credit. Too bad she's retiring this year, she will definitely be missed
As a biology major going into my first major class as an undergrad, I could not have asked for a better professor. She cares about the students and prepares you well for tests. Get her for a professor if you can!
Professor Belk is AWESOME. She is so nice and really knowledgeable. She gives the best feedback- it really makes you want to succeed. This was an online class, but she took the time to learn everyone's names! Every time I came to campus for a test, she greeted me and knew who I was. I highly recommend, either online or in-person.
Prof. Belk was a great teacher for the biology senior seminar class! She treated us more like colleagues than students and treated our questions as important. It was up to us to do the classwork but she was open to helping us prepare our seminars as needed and giving lots of honest, constructive feedback after we presented.
Great prof, if you're looking for your science lab class take biology and society with her, she's easy but knowledgable, pretty good lectures too.
Took it online, Bio and Society. Honestly, thought I was screwed because at mid terms I had a C. The second half she really allows you to improve your grade with labs and stuff. Extra credit too.
I took Biology and Society online. If you do the homework, read the book carefully, and do all the labs, you'll be able to pass the class. There's plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Don't slack off and work ahead when you can.
Professor Belk is an extremely kind individual who is also a wonderful professor. I took an online biology course with her, and I really appreciated the entire set up of this course. She gives kind and detailed feedback to all assignments and is always available to talk outside of class if help is needed. Would definitely recommend this course.
Although BIO 1001 is an easy class, Dr. Belk makes it impossible. When contacted with questions she is rude and degrading. I am not a science major so I had many questions, she was not helpful at all. I gave up contacting her and would just work with my TA.
