She is new, so kind of unorganized but she is excited about the material and wants you to succeed! Takes into account student suggestions too.
not a bad class as long you already know what linguistic is. have fun learning the alaphabet she does not really cover that much and that is the hardest part. at times she can be unclear and unorganzied. always comes to class later at least 5-10 minute
i would reconmmend this professor to any english major (esp. to teachers). she is very personable and her enthusiasm for the material is contagious. be prepared to participate in discussions and keep up on your reading.
Excellent teacher: she is very knowledgeable and passionate about the material, plus she is genuinely interested in student success. There is occasional tardiness, as someone else mentioned, but she's a prof, not a nursemaid. Didn't bother me at all.
She's enthusiastic and wants you to do well. She did have a bit of trouble explaining tricky concepts, but if you ask she will try and explain it another way.
Confusing, unorganized, and not consistent. She is, however, enthusiatic about sociolinguistics and TRIES to help you.
hard class, didn't enjoy it...she is really nice, though. you get to pick your assignments and what you'll be graded on.
Very unorganized. Does not know concepts good enough to teach them well. Wastes time on theoretical concepts rather than practical. Unempathetic to student concerns.
This class had absolutly nothing to do with teaching. If I taught the way Colleen did I would lose my job. Totally unorganized and wastes too much time on esoteric concepts.
She knows a lot of information but just doesn't teach it well. A lot of small group discussions, which get nowhere. It felt like a sociology class and not a Teaching ESL class.
she sucks. crappy professor. doesn't teach well at all. easy grader though. very easy to get an A. but doesnt really know how to be a teacher.
I think she is a good teacher. I didn't know anything about linguistics and the activities that she does helps you retain the information. I'd take her again.
Still kind of young, needs more teaching practice. Takes a long time to grade papers but is very friendly and asks for student input on what type of assignments to do.
She is a nice person but as a teacher, just doesn't know how to teach well. Her class is sooo boring.
Not all smart people make for good teachers. I learned nothing from her. She is boring, monotonous, and rude to her students. She was always late to class and late to let us out. If you value your college career, do not enroll in her classes.
Though she is not the most colorful person, she really knows her stuff and explains the material very well. There is not too much homework, but what she gives is relavant to the course. Any English major should take her for at least one class.
One of the sweetest professors I've ever had and very willing to work with students if they come to her. She obviously knows and loves her subject and that shows through in class. I highly recommend taking her.
Very smart within her field but the most horrible prof I've had. She knows what she's talking about, but just can't teach it well. Very, very helpful outside of class for questions and a nice person, but just not meant to be a teacher. Tests were hell but homework was always sinple.
I thought she did a fairly decent job considering the material was very hard and complicated. She does a very good job clarifying the material in the book and going over the different concepts. What she puts on the study guide is always on the exams. I would take her again if I had to.
Dr. Brice is very knowledgeable and PATIENT! She spent much time outside of class with me and was sweet in providing further explanation. This material took some time for me to grasp, but with dedication and hard work, I pulled off an A. You can too with this professor.
I took Dr. Brice's class (Teaching ESL Writing) at SIUC in 2002. It's one of the best classes I have taken so far. She's intelligent, helpful, and friendly. I had no idea about ESL writing before that class. Later it became a field I'm still interested in.
She is a great professor! She is friendly, knowledgable, and very helpful. She wasn't necessarily difficult, it's just that the material was, but that's to be expected in a linguistics class. Just visit her during office hours and you'll have no problem getting a good grade as well as learning a lot.
Very condescending manner...socially inept. No method to the madness of her grading. Not prepared for class. Not an effective communicator or professor. I've had straight A's except for her class.
She is very disorganized and condescending. She does not return papers or assignments until weeks later. Her assignments are unclear same as her syllabus and grading. Alays late for class and frazzled.
Very helpful and intelegent person
Do not take!! Learned more from reading the book than her teaching. Never clear on assignments, changes them at the last minute. . Doesn't return emails or phone calls, uninterested in helping students figure out their questions.
I became much more aware of issues in teaching. Colleen Brice cares about her students. She comes into class a bit flustered at times, but its because she spends time to truly looks at every person's assignments and gives great feed back-you don't feel discouraged but edified. She really works with you, is intelligent and knows how to teach.
Yuck yuck yuck. Brice does NOT exemplify what it means to be a "good" teacher. She may possess a wealth of knowledge but she does NOT know how to teach, or how to associate well with people. I've had roughly 30 profs here at GV and disliked two. She is the one i have disliked the MOST.
Knowledgable about ESL. Does not communicate that knowledge. We did not get the syllabus until over half way through the semeseter. Unorganized, flighty and has horrible interpersonal skills. I got along with her O.K. but I was appauled at how rude she was to several classmates. She manipulated her end of term eval to look better. Important class.
Whoever said she was a good teacher must have been one of her teacher's pets. They are the only ones who actually do well in her classes - and not because they know the material better than anyone else. Flighty, unorganized, biased grading, and rude. In the process of filing a complaint with her Head of Dept.
Though she was given this class so close to the start of the semester, she did a good job of teaching a very difficult class. Those who said that she isn't helpful are wrong, she will help you if you take the time to work with her outside of class. She isn't flighty at all, I don't know where y'all get that from. Take her classes, if you can.
This lady sucks!! She has no idea what is going on and didn't give us a syllabus until the semester was almost over! She is a total air-head and does not know how to run a class. I would not recommend her to anyone.
I seriously can't believe that people don't like Professor Brice. She is a WONDERFUL professor! She is very knowledgeable and wants her students to succeed. She is passionate about the subject matter and teaches in a very clear way and always leaves time for discussion/questions. By far one of my favorite professors in my three years at GVSU.
FABULOUS! I was scared to take this class but I had NO problem throughout the semester. She teaches it so that it is comprehensible, fun, and interesting. She is patient and has no favorites (which is nice). I got an A on every test. If you take this course, you MUST take her :)
Professor Brice was very sweet, helpful, and funny. I was told how difficult this course was and I was afraid to take it. She made material easy to understand and made sure that everyone got it before moving on to something new. Do the assignments, show her that you understand the material, you will get an A. I did :)
I always love taking her classes because she demands so much from her students, yet it willing to help when approached with questions.
Could quite possibly one of the worst professors I have had. Does not seem to care for students, if you need something ask a classmate!
tough grader and whatever you do and how hard you work doesn't make sense to her. the more you work the less grade you get. I would never recommend her even to an enemy or kindergarten.
Started out okay. But, slowly, the class grew more and more disorganized and horrible. Attending it was like being in the middle of a train wreck. She's late to class, disorganized, and usually arrogant towards students. Do not take.
ENG 660 is the hardest B I ever earned. I studied my butt off. I emailed her several times for clarification, and never got a response. She is very subjective when it comes to grading. If you never ask questions and laugh at her jokes, she will like you. I am a teacher, and I would use her as an example of what a teacher should not do!
I had her for 660 and LOVED it. It was a lot of work, but manageable. I learned a ton and thought she was great.
She is an intelligent instructor and will not move on with a subject until the entire class understands. However, she takes awhile grading the bigger assignments and can be disorganized. If you show up for class you will be fine.
smart and good at writing of course. Kind too easy-going in this class that almost make me feel she doesn't really care about this course. I first felt that I learn nothing from her but actually I did learn how to write different types of paper though WRITING CENTER. I feel more like I learned by myself, her job is give us the assignments.
She knows the material that she teaches and is a great teacher for the entire class. However, she is not answer questions very well on a one on one basis and can be arrogant when answering the questions. Over all though I would recommend taking her. She is very nice and puts a lot of time into answer sheets for her students.
Worst class I ever took at GVSU. She had an outrageous amount of homework due every day (a few hours per class time). She had favorites and didn't listen to the rest of us. If she didn't like what we had to say she would ignore us. She was my worst prof and I wont take her again. Oh, and she only gave us 3 mins for the end of the year evaluation.
She was always ready for the class, and explained everything clearly. The exams were a little bit difficult but still manageable. I learned a lot from that class.
She's an incredibly nice person and definitely knows her material, but she never answers emails, doesn't answer questions clearly, doesn't present her material in a comprehensible way, and is extremely disorganized. Class time consisted of pointless group work, and a lack of review for tests, which were also very difficult. Disappointed.
Professor Brice is a quirky but sweet lady. She often shows up a few minutes late and unorganized. Yes, there is homework after every class period but it is manageable. She is often confusing with how she presents material but overall, I learned a lot in the course. Have to work hard to get a good grade, though.
I don't know why people think this course is disorganized - she definitely gave us clear objective and her lecture was awesome. I am not sure about the other courses, but I strongly recommended ENG261 course. Although it was not very easy, I learned a lot from her. She is always willing to help her students and very intelligent.
Rudest prof I've ever had. I felt embarrassed/bad for others, and astonished at her poor teaching methods. I bet she is not a certified teacher. She has little patience, and always made me feel like an idiot when I asked questions in class. So I stopped, and ended up with a sub-par grade.
In my opinion this teacher is a poor choice on the part of the English Department at GVSU. Her teaching methods and communication skills are far below average in comparison to the rest of the professors I've had at Grand Valley.
AMAZING class, AMAZING professor. This class changed my life--I'm not kidding. Colleen's instruction helped guide me towards shattering the last ignorant inclinations I had. Give in to the journey. Forget what you think you know about language and prepare yourself to learn the truth.
Completely disorganized. Has extremely annoying tendencies that regularly occur in class. Makes students feel uncomfortable for requesting clarity and replies with comments like "You're not thinking," and "You must not have been paying attention." Etc. Her lectures consist of her trying to find examples of what she's trying to explain, and failing.
She knows what she is talking about but she makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Especially if the question is tricky and requires additional knowledge. She can be disorganized and spacey some classes but overall the her dry humor makes things somewhat interesting. She needs improvement with dealing with students.
Although she knows what she is talking about, I didn't think she was very helpful. This class wasn't super easy for me and when I asked for help, she made it seem like it was a hassle to give it. I didn't hate her, but I wouldn't recommend her.
I'm a little shocked by the rest of the reviews on here. I thought Professor Brice was a very nice person, and I never felt like she made students feel dumb for asking questions. The work is complex, but she walks you through examples in class, which helps immensely. She did have a tendency to arrive late to class, however.
So, this class is hard in general and I genuinely feel like this professor tries to make it as easy as possible for students. However, because she wants you to figure it out for yourself, her help is sometimes vague. Also, her tests are hard and she is a pretty harsh grader...
Love her. Very understanding to international student. Tried to be a helpful and supportive source to ESL students by suggesting places to go in grand rapids, or talking to us about our experience. Brought pizza and candies sometimes. Learned interesting thing from the writng projest through out the semester. take her
She was very unprofessional. I was the only one in my class who knew what they were doing, so she imposed a rule that I couldn't raise my hand more than three times a class period and ACTUALLY COUNTED. She had very subjective grading, and I didn't get 2/3 of my exams back to see what I did wrong. She didn't like that I found the class easy.
Wouldn't recommend. Have had few tests on difficult and a lot of material, acts like we have more time than we do. Spends class time going over homework instead of review (second test had no review session). Keeps class till the end and sometimes late. Prioritizes class over work despite not letting class out on time ever. Would drop if could.
I really enjoy classes with Dr. Brice. She is fair and kind and treats all students equally. She is very knowledgeable about what she teaches and cares about the well-being of her students. Assignments for her classes are not hard but do take a lot of time. Lots of reading. She always gives clear grading criteria and feedback.
She was an absolutely amazing teacher. Highly engaging and always related outside questions and scenarios back to the topics we were learning in class. She has a wealth of knowledge and I highly suggest you meet with her during office hours for general advice if you are going into the English field.
She's the worst I've ever had. I don't like her at all and I will never take a class with her again. I am more than happy I'm not going to be a student there again!
Drowning in handouts. Homework rarely graded. She's patient, but if you don't understand something she'll just tell you to look it up AGAIN in the many, many, many notes she provides. Blackboard site is very disorganized, forgets to post homework frequently and still expects it to be completed. Sometimes she posts it morning of
Super disorganized. Terrible notes and lectures. Likes to embarrass students by having everyone one by one answer a question in front of class. If you don't know it she won't help. Just stares. It's awful and humiliating. Tons of homework that isn't even graded.
It seems that Prof Brice intentionally tries to make this class challenging. SO MUCH work. She is the hardest grader & takes a long time to respond to emails. She is not gracious or understanding & favorites those who do well + participate. The material in general is hard & she acts like everyone taking the class will become majors in the subject.
i'm always shocked to have professors who have absolutely no teaching skills. she's a nice lady, but she rambles the whole time or just leaves us in breakout rooms for half of the class. also this class is called "teaching READING and writing" and we've never talked about reading ever. no organization or engaging teaching at all.
Her lectures were incredibly boring online and complicated. She did not handle online teaching well, and that made our lives as students even harder, unfortunately. It was chaotic since she had never taught online before. We would run out of time every day and she would still assign homework on stuff we did not learn. Too much chaos for me.
Take anyone else this class has completely drained me as a student and it's so terrible. The exams make no sense and we are working towards nothing. Good luck if you have this prof.
A lot of people give Colleen a hard time, but she is definitely one of the most educated professors I've ever had. She really knows her stuff. She isn't the savviest with technology, but we all deserve a break on that end right now. Lots of homework due before every class period, difficult midterm, and final exam period is a group presentation.
the whole class Is just going over homework. there was maybe a total of three classes this semester that she taught. A bunch of homework before every class that you meet and she rarely every collects it, so you spend hours doing homework thats worth nothing.
I really liked Dr. Brice, but I can see that she was a difficult professor for many people. The material covered is difficult and you definitely need to stay on top of everything if you want to pass. If you are nervous about this class, I'd recommend a different prof. I really enjoyed her class and the content though.
She does know a lot, but is not a good prof. She clearly has favorites. She doesn't encourage discourse in class, as she always needs to be right. She doesn't listen to student feedback. There are a lot of inequitable practices in her class. Terrible with tech and never posts grades. Just try to get on her good side. Frustrating, but doable.
She's not a bad prof, per se. Blackboard is disorganized, class is very slow-paced, some busy work, and the number of handouts and uses of the word "kitties" is ridiculous; this very often felt like a kindergarten classroom, which drove me nuts. If you're ok with a lot of well-intentioned condescension, go for it. Otherwise, maybe not.
Dr. Brice is fantastic and anyone who says otherwise sucks at being a college student. She's deeply and extensively educated and has a real passion for teaching that is admirable as a future esl educator myself.
THAT WOMAN GAVE US HOMEWORK AFTER THE FINAL EXAM! Other than that, there were too many handouts; one is able to make a whole textbook out of all the papers at the end of the semester. The course was also very unorganized as it is extremely difficult to locate assignments on the blackboard page and grades are hardly posted throughout the semester.
Professor Brice is not my favorite. She assigns homework about topics you haven't learned yet, her exams are confusing (as if the content of the class wasn't confusing enough), and she doesn't explain things well. Your grade is based on 3 exams, a group project, and homework. I would choose a different professor if possible, ENG 261 is HARD.
Brice teaches a content heavy class. Going to class will significantly reduce confusion or trouble with the material. There is a ton of HW, but practice is necessary to understand and grasp the concepts. She's a nice woman, but can be a little condescending at times & is slow with grading.
I have never respected a professor less. She is impossible to reach outside of class because she ",changes due dates constantly, docks your grade 1/3 of a letter for each absence (no matter what it is), speaks condescendingly to students, answers questions with "because I said so", and has absolutely no idea what she is doing in terms of teaching.
quite literally the worst teacher I have ever had. she is inconsiderate, unable to show up on time, and a ditz. I have never had a teacher who ignores the needs of students the way she does. She consistently tells students "your priorities aren't in the right place" when they have full-time jobs, kids, and other classes.
this teacher will not give you your grade in the class. she ill prepares for class constantly comes in late and truly does not seem to care about the environment of her classroom. why she became a teacher, I could never tell you. But I can tell you she should not have.
Her classes are filled with useless knowledge that has little relevance to the tests she gives you. She will not accept responsibility for her mistakes and chooses to blame students for not knowing what she was thinking. She gives increasingly confusing instructions during class and will not clarify. She is always late, yet requires attendance.
This professor is awful. She is beyond rude to the students, doesn't believe in email, doesn't use a grade book, and is constantly late to class. She grades things based upon who she likes and is unclear as to what the expectations were to any assignment. If you actually want to learn and benefit from a class then do not take this professor.
I have never felt more disrespected by a prof. This teacher has no understanding of students being real people and having other priorities besides her class. She criticizes students ideas and is condescending if they don't know the "correct" answer. Her feedback is extremely critical and accuses students of lying in their personal writing.
I have never disliked a professor more. She can't be bothered to show up to class on time or learn how to use BlackBoard so none of us know if we're passing the class or not. Also hands out too many papers that we don't go over so she wastes paper like no other.
I am furious. Prof is condescending, "doesn't believe in the internet" so doesn't use email and has no grade book, is late to every class yet requires attendance, spends more time trying to prove you wrong than actually teaching, and changes due dates constantly because she "doesn't understand calenders". She made this class have 0 value whatsoever
She got better as the semester went on but overall is not great. Shes not very understanding, doesn't use Blackboard(overall grade is never posted), posts homework a day before its due, talks about random and boring stuff & hands out so many unnecessary papers. If you have to take her you'll probably be fine just be prepared to be annoyed daily
Brice is by far the worst professor I've had. If she doesn't like you it's obvious, and she's very passive-aggressive. Always on random tangents, spending half the class talking about how she's from Ohio. Be prepared to be bored, and unprepared for exams. She doesn't use Blackboard for grades, it's finals week and I have no grades in Blackboard.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH HER!! Proof Brice is by far one of the worst proofs I have ever had. She will not post anything that is helpful on blackboard. We have only had a total of about 10 slideshows that she flies through. She will not offer an help, and when she does she mostly makes you feel bad about yourself. Grades are also never posted.
Colleen is by far the worst professor I have ever had and has done nothing to improve over the semester. She is condescending and rude, never puts in test grades, and refuses to help. Even in a one-on-one meeting with her, she talked down to me the whole time and didn't help. Even at the end of the semester, she refuses to learn my name.
Dr. Brice is a sweet lady who really loves linguistics and cares about her students. However, she gives an excessive amount of homework that is almost impossible to complete. Her tests are extremely difficult. Wouldn't take it with her again.
I genuinely do not get the hate for Dr. Brice. She is a very nice lady and very passionate and knowledgeable in what she teaches. Homework was manageable and tests weren't easy but they certainly were not hard. Participation is important but lots of students refused to and I'm assuming that is why they feel poorly about her. Great woman and teacher
I wish I would have listened to other reviews. DO NOT TAKE. Condecending, so much busy work, makes you calculate your own grade. If your answers on tests don't use her exact lingo, no credit received. I would take any other professor as other classes did not have tests or learn the material we did. Memorizing the IPA alphabet, not worth your time.
I was hesitant to take this course after seeing these reviews, but I had such a wonderful experience. Homework is based on completion, so you can easily get 100%. She provides study guides that gives almost exactly what you need to know, plus if you have questions, she lets you know how it would be formatted in the exam. Loved this course.
Dr. Brice was okay, she certainly wasn't terrible. She tries to be funny in a way that makes you laugh. However, there was homework every day. At the beginning of the semester the homework was a lot of 1 page essays, but the further you got into the content, the less time the homework took. Tests are not easy, but not that terrible if you study.
I truly did not mind having Brice. She was funny but also very strict on her expectations. She accepts no late work, even if two minutes late. The class is VERY homework heavy it was kinda ridiculous. Attendance is optional but the lectures are really important. Tests aren't too bad if you study and stay on top of the homework.
