This class was great! Lectures were fun and full of enthusiasm. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP TRACK OF UNITS ON THE EXAM. That was where points were docked off most
I enjoyed having Dr. Craig for both chem 110 and 152. She made her tests reasonable with the material that you go over in lecture. I like how she gives you practice exams before to prepare for the actual exams and sometimes she uses the same questions for the exam. She is really helpful in office hours also. Overal a good teacher.
I really enjoyed her lectures, and made chemistry relevant to me again after a disappointing 142. She gives you practice exams, and answer keys although she makes typos (2 or 3 per tests). She performs numerous demos to keep her lectures interesting and makes lame, cheeky funny analogies and jokes. I enjoyed her class very much!
I loved this class! Lectures were entertaining but well structured, gave clear explanations. Exams are a lot easier than many other 152 profs. As long as you put in the effort (attend lecture, make sure you understand concepts) you can definitely do well in Craig's class. Sometimes was a bit impatient during office hours though.
Great class! She is easy to understand and makes lectures fun (yes, chem can be fun!). Do practice exams and book problems. In my opinion, she is the best chem proff so far. Compared to other proffs. 152 is the best out of the gen chem series, for me that is. ps, DONT FORGET UNITS!
I had her for 152 and she is not the best professor. First off, I don't think she herself truly understands the material, because she always gets confused and stumbles when asked a tricky question in class. The tests are not easy, as the average is a 61% , and are ridiculously conceptual. Her lectures do not address these concepts, however.
Excellent Professor, the best I've had this quarter. I thought she was really organized, study her powerpoints and practice exams and ALEKS and you'll do well.
She is very helpful, nice and this class is very easy! Plus the Lecture notes are always posted on the website and you never need to go to class. As long as you go to your quiz section, to ALEKS, get your notes online and do the practice exams you will be fine!
I had her for both 142, and 152. I think she is a really great professor! She's really helpful, and nice. There are a lot of conceptual questions on her exams, so just make sure to understand the concepts really well, and the exams will be fairly easy.
Overall I liked Dr. Craig, even though I detest chemistry. She does some sort of demo during almost every lecture. She loves the subject, and seems to be super excited about teaching. Exams (half scantron, half long answer) were more conceptual than I was expecting, but most of the class seems to be doing just fine (60 & 78% means for exams 1 & 2).
Very good teacher. Teaching with passion and a twist of comedy. I had her for CHEM 152, and so far so good. Definitely recommended.
Professor Craig is awesome! One of my favorite professors i've had yet. She's really good at what she does and is very comical as well. Tests are relatively easy if you look at past exams or practice exams. She's a very nice lady and I would highly recommend her!
A genuine, nice professor. Excellent practice exams to prep for real exams. Lectures are pretty good for the most part. She's funny. Personally think she tries too hard with humor, but I also think that's hilarious.
Dr. Craig is no doubt a nice lady, but I'm not sure if she's the greatest teacher. She seems to doubt herself a lot when asked a tricky question, but overall a teacher who is concerned with whether her students learn or not; she even adds in her bad humor which makes the class fun. Read the book, go to class, and really understand CONCEPTS.
A horrible professor with no understanding of "fair" grading system. Don't take her if you are an astute student as she basically gave an entire class a standard deviation above average on a midterm, screwing people who do well from getting the grade they deserve. Lectures are just a sad attempt of drawing laughs out of the class. Stay away!
Craig is alright. Practice exams nothing like the actual exams, and she asks a lot of conceptual questions. I fell asleep in lectures often cause they were mainly her reading off the Powerpoint slides. Unless you understand stuff completely from leccture, this is a self-teach class.
Going to her office hours are very helpful. She really cares about education and will take the time to explain things you don't understand you as long as you ask for help.
Awesome professor! Took the time to explain concepts and very responsive to questions. She somehow managed to make an 8am Chem class fun and lively. Demonstrations took the place of labs and a significant online presence meant that you could watch lectures online. I wish I was a Chem major so I could take Chem 152 with her.
Her lecture slides are very hard to understand. She usually has just one example that runs through the entire lecture and this makes it hard to see how to do a problem. She also spends alot of time deriving the formulas then says"you won't need to know how to do this"which is a waste of time. You can tell she knows the material, but hard to understand
She is extremely passionate about chemistry and really loves teaching it! She is hilarious and very animated during lecture. Her exams are extremely difficult though and her lecture examples can be confusing at times.
Its a pass/fail class, what can I say.. super easy. Besides the fact that I rarely went to lecture (8:30 am class bleh), she still was an easy and interesting professor to listen to. She really knew what she was talking about and wasn't boring. Her lectures were crystal clear
Just read the book. If you have questions, go to her office hours because she's more approachable then. During lecture, try to follow along or give her a sympathetic laugh for her failed attempt at humor (she scolded us for not laughing once). Don't question her methods because she's super defensive about them. Exams are difficult, but fair. Read.
Dr. Craig is the best!! Extremely helpful and a little goofy at times so lecture was engaging. Really enjoyed learning about the topics in chem 152 and can honestly say that this is not a bad class if you put in work, read the book, and show some interest! Be prepared for some gnarly thermo concepts though. Overall: thoroughly enjoyed it!
It's definitely entertaining to watch her dance around and attempt jokes in class. She is actually very good at explaining the hard concepts. Tests are difficult, but she is fair with the questions she puts on them. Some are on the conceptual side. It is a tough class, but she does a decent job in explaining the material so that it makes sense.
very clear lectures. however i feel like not everything is covered in lectures. master practice exams; I got some questions on my exam that are the same as prac exam questions. midterm and final class averages were quite high. some exam questions are tricky: she includes common incorrect answers in multiple choice options (ex: unit conversions
Good instructor, well organized slides, available to print online. Exams are multiple choice, and fairly difficult (normal for chem). She uses Panopto for online lecture recordings, which doesn't show the slides very well, so online lectures aren't too useful. Practice exams and textbook problems help on tests. Takes way too long to grade scantrons
Her class was interesting with many in-class experiments and hilarous description. But the grading was not really fair. I did pretty good on each exam, and I thought I could get 3.7 or higher, but resulted 3.4. Hard class, but could fully understand if put enough effort in.
Do the textbook problems and go over handouts and you should be set for the tests. Easy to do well by doing the work and a little extra here and there
I loved her class! I really wanted to take her for CHEM 162, but it was so late and hard to get into. If it weren't for those reason, I would've definitely taken her! Very organized and clear about what she's going to test you on. Also, she's really FAIR!
Tests are fair and just print out lecture notes.
Craig is a pretty fair grader, but the tests themselves are pretty tough. Her worksheets problems passed out in quiz section are the hardest problems you will get on the tests. Most of her multiple choice questions are conceptual ones.
Colleen may be quirky and annoying during lecture, but her lecture slides are organized, she's very on top of everything, and her tests are fair.
I took both Chem 152 and 162 with her and loved her class! She's funny and sometimes a little scatterbrained, but wonderful nonetheless. Be sure to read the textbook, understand the worksheet problems, and DO HER SUGGESTED PRACTICE PROBLEMS. If you can do the book problems, you can do the test problems.
She didn't teach us the things that other chemistry classes were taught (she wasn't able to catch up to them). I have taken her 152 class as well and her exams are SO difficult. Not possible to take her class without ruining your GPA.
Her tests are hard and often conceptual. The grading is also pretty harsh for the exams. She likes to talk about stuff that isn't going to be on the exam during her lectures. Her lectures are pretty boring and I often fall asleep. I would recommend reading the textbook and teaching yourself.
This professor is by far my favorite of the chemistry department. Her lectures are crystal-clear. Come to class with printed out lecture slides and take notes in the margins so you don''t waste your time writing what''s on the slides but rather on what she has to say about them. Read the chapters in the textbook. They will all come together.
She's awful. And I mean awful. Once you take upper level courses you can understand the severity of this because if you ask her a question, she literally has no idea how to answer it. She's not relatable as a teacher and can only speak to what is written on her slides. Her knowledge is lacking and therefore students continue to struggle.
She was a great chem prof, always reminded you of when assignments were due so nothing was a surprise. Her tests are tough but I enjoyed the class a lot and got a good grade.
I'm by no means a chemistry person and was worried going into the course, but coming out I am really glad I took professor Craig's section. All her lectures are recorded and put online, she puts her notes online as well just in case you cant come or don't want to. Midterms and finals are pretty clearly outlined in review sessions. She swears a lot
Her lectures are good but tests are hard
I'm doing pretty bad in this class, but I feel like there were a lot of resources that Dr. Craig provided that I could have used, like the online lectures and notes. The practice problems that are in the textbook will help you pass the class. She is a very reasonable professor.
I love dr. Craig her class is hard but it is sooooooo worth it. Provides a lot of help
She is a good professor however, her test is hard and long. You have to study so much for the test.
This class was only easy for me because I took AP Chem in high school. It was a lot of review from the high school course with few things added. Her midterms come from worksheets you get in quiz sections. She explains things in complicated terms so try and find someone who knows what they're doing and ask them for help.
I LOVE HER! She's hilarious and really good at lecturing - keeps it interesting. She answered questions very well and made chemistry fun. I would definitely take another chem class with her.
Her lectures are good. The demonstrations are fun to watch but are there for show. She really makes use of canvas discussion, so many of answers could be there. Overall, she is not bad. I have her again for 152.
Did pretty well in this class (lectures arent necessary, she posts slides), but it was only because of my AP Chem background. The tests arent hard or anything, you just need to be sure you understand the material and can answer FRQs without outside help. Do all her practice exams and discussion section worksheets, she'll ask similar questions.
Easy class if you do the worksheet and practice exams. Not just do them but understand forwards and backwards. Labs are tedious and long. So are her lectures. You can skip her class, it's all online anyways.
I've had Craig for both Chem 142 and 152. Her lectures are clear and entertaining. Definitely worth attending. She's helpful and very fair. Her tests are straightforward, and study everything she says. Go to lectures, do Aleks, and do the worksheets, and review for exams.
I took the class last quarter. Her lectures were boring, but Dr. Craig is really helpful. Just make sure to participate in class, do the exam practices, and ALEKS then you will be fine. Overall, I enjoyed having class with her. I would take her again if she teaches higher level classes.
I took her course last quarter, and continued with her this one. Usually in front of class a few minutes before to give students help if they need it, or just talk. Very laid back and nice. DON'T be afraid to ask questions, I felt I was asking too many. But she enjoys having a student who asks questions in front of 480 people. Highly Suggested!
She tries to be funny during lectures and her lectures notes are very well structured. Tests are very hard and they are all multiple choice questions. She gives mock exams before the actual exams which is very helpful.
Ok Craig isn't the worst teacher in the world but she is definitely not the best. She can be pretty unclear about things. Her tests are pretty hard in that the time you have to do them is really short, be prepared to work fast. Not that hard of a class but you have to work to get an A.
Clear, organized, and long lectures. Tests are all multiple choice which can be bad because she is tricky and she will always have a common or attractive wrong answer that you could easily get. Make sure you REALLY understand all the worksheets and concepts. She will give you the equations you need on tests. She will get you on units and concepts.
Dr. Craig is a really COOL professor! She is super funny and makes Chem lot more fun! Her tests are HARD ( but easier than Ginger!). make sure you understand all the concepts(Dr. Craig loves concepts!) Calculation problems in the exam are kind of tricky because you think you did it right.. the answer is there... and it's still wrong :P lol
Dr. Craig is great. Her tests are tough, but she is a fantastic lecturer. My favorite lecturer yet, in fact.
Tests this quarter were multiple choice. Pace of the class was kinda slow, so we got behind in lectures quite a few times which was frustrating because we didn't cover all the content that 152 normally would. Office hours don't help much because so many students go in and ask surface level questions. Tests are about 50% conceptual.
She is great, ive been taking the general chem series with her, I couldnt imagine having a different teacher. Her tests are really tough, It seems sometimes that no matter how much I study I still get the same grade. But shes an amazing lecturer, and I learn a lot. Make sure you understand HOW things work (conceptual) instead of just calculations
One of the best general chemistry series teachers UW has to offer. Craig makes her lectures fun and less boring by making (sometimes lame, but still funny) jokes. Tests were all multiple choice, but evenly split between conceptual and calculations. Lecture notes are online. Tough tests, but she is very clear on what you should study for.
I really loved Doctor Craig. You can tell she has a passion for teaching chemistry, and has a wicked sense of humor. While her classes are tough and averages on tests are generally low, success is possible is you pay attention in lectures. The content is explained really well and she manages to not make lectures mind-numbingly boring.
Colleen teaches General Chemistry so obviously it is a somewhat difficult class. She is a funny lecturer and is very nice in office hours or beforeafter lecture. Overall she is regarded as being the best Gen Chem teacher. Midterms and Finals are multiple choice; do worksheets and textbook problems to do well. I had her for 142, 152, and 162.
The best gen chem professor at the University of Washington. Knows her stuff, I had a different professor for 142 and did marginal. Upon having Dr. Craig I flourished and became so interested in chemistry I switched to a chemistry major.
Worksheets are pretty much exactly like the exam questions, so if you study those, you'll do very well. Very reasonable in her grading and very helpful.
Craig is by far the best gen Chem professor at UW. She actually loves what she teaches and it shows. Her tests are tricky, but she gives mock exams that are incredibly helpful in preparing for them. She's super reasonable and just seems like a cool lady. She made 152 and 162 bearable for me. Don't take the series with anyone else!
Loved Colleen! Her lectures aren't too boring and she's probably my favorite chemistry professor at UW. Her tests can be tricky though, so go through old practice exams. You also need to read some of the textbook cause some of that stuff appears on tests.
Was fortunate enough to have Craig for the entire 100 series. Without a doubt one of the best teachers (not just profs) I've ever had. She's an amazing lecturer and breaks things down extremely clearly. Her tests are fair, all multiple choice, and she holds mock exams. Only issue is sometimes she gets behind on material bc she's answering questions
Her lectures are extremely helpful and it's nice that if you miss one you can watch it online. The tests aren't easy but they are fair. I would recommend.
It is clear Dr. Craig really knows her stuff and is genuinely interested in the material. Lectures go by pretty fast and are usually very interesting. Tests are a little tricky but do the worksheets and you won't have a problem.
Can not believe how terriblely she explains topics in class. She likes to illustrate points in many perspectives, which makes this class more complicated.
Colleen was great for lectures. Clear, easy to follow, funny during lectures, and a very fair grader. Would strongly recommend! She was very fair about test grading, and our class was given an opportunity to gain points back from our second midterm with a similar question on the final!
Professor Craig was amazing! She puts on dorky jokes in her slides that make the materials more memorable. Even if she can't answer all of your questions in office hours, she will make time out of her schedule to do so. She is very clear on what she wants you to know, and her lecture notes are very helpful when you are studying for her exams.
She's the best general chemistry professor that you can have at UW. Her lectures are very thorough and clear, and they really make you understand the concepts. MAKE SURE you watch all lectures and do quiz section worksheets and practice exams: tests are going to be hard if you don't do them, but reasonable enough if you do them.
Explains concepts well. Her weekly worksheets and practice exams are very helpful in preparation for exams. Know how to do all the problems, do the end of chapter questions she suggests, and read the textbook. I found that going to office hours to see her one on one was very helpful as well.
I took the CHEM 142,152,162 with Craig. Take her class if you can. But expect to do work. Worksheets, practice exams, previous exams** will all be really helpful when preparing for the tests. All my TAs sucked, but nothing that Craig can do about. Don't have to attend lectures, she uses panapto which is also great. Very organized lectures.
I am SO glad I took the whole Chem series with Craig! From what I hear about other professors, she is probably your best option for a Chem prof so TAKE HER!!! She really wants her students to understand the material and her lectures are superb. As for exams, they're easy as long as you do the practiceold exams she provides! Good luck!
She is an amazing professor! I only had the chance to take the last class in the series with her, but she made it the best one. Very helpful lectures and practice exams.
Dr. Craig was very clear and specific in lectures, and checked for understanding frequently. She is excellent at explaining concepts in multiple ways, and validating student questions and/or comments. She knows her stuff, and doesn't assign loads of homework. Tests were relatively easy; I highly suggest taking Dr. Craig's classes when possible.
Dr. Craig is a very nice and knowledgeable professor for Chem 110. Expect typos in her powerpoint presentations :P Her reactions when things do not go as planned are the best. She is also very knowledgeable on the content and uses good vocabulary during lecture. Would recommend her to anyone who has even the slightest interest in Chemistry.
This class is easier since it's intro and is for C/NC. Very clear instruction, sometimes funny. Post lecture slides online; records of lectures are available. Provide practice exam and other review material. Reasonable to low amount of HW. Helpful. Answer questions in and after class, as well as online. Definitely will take her class again.
Best teacher I have ever had, I plan on taking the entire chem series with her. DO NOT TAKE CHEMISTRY WITH ANYONE ELSE, it would be a mistake not to have Craig. She's hilarious, cares about student learning, gives great demos, and is all around great. On the last day of lecture, the class applauded her. Definitely do your best to take Craig.
Dr. Craig is incredibly clear and concise in what she is teaching you and what she expects from you on her exams. Take her classes if you want someone who has common sense, is very reasonable, and takes the time to explain things if you need help understanding the material. Awesome class that made me enjoy chemistry.
Dr. Craig is a great chemistry teacher. She gives a lot of clarity to the subject and makes sure that everyone understands what she is talking about. The demos are cool and she can be funny. However, tests are hard and she does not grade easily. But I did enjoy the class.
Heard horrible things about the gen chem series at UW from friends, so I put off taking it until my junior year. Now I have no idea why because Craig was fantastic! Lectures were really engaging plus she has a super 90's sense of humor which I appreciated. Tests were challenging but definitely fair - and she makes herself available if you want help
It was a pretty straight-forward class and she helped as long as you asked. Definitely go to office hours if you start to struggle with anything. But the hardest part is keeping up with the ALEKS homework. BTW, attendance is mandatory because she gives in class quizzes everyday.
Dr. Craig is a very good lecturer and educator. She is very straightforward about her expectation from her students so make sure to really study those section worksheets and practice midterms! Also, her explanations are very clear and she makes sure to follow up if she forget to mention something.
Such a great professor! I personally hate chemistry (with a burning passion) but with Craig it's completely bearable and I've been doing well above average on the midterms. You definitely have to study (it's a genchem after all), but out of all the chem teachers I've had she is by far the best. Some of the others are nightmares compared to her.
I have been with Dr. Craig for Chem 110, 142, and 152 this year and am incredibly sad to not have her for 162, or anything else. Craig is funny, knowledgeable, respectable, and overall great. Tests are pretty difficult, but so is chemistry so there's no escaping that. She's also on Panopto, so if you can't make it it's no big deal.
Definitely an amazing teacher! I'm not going to lie, I'm not the best at Chem but she made it way easier to comprehend than I expected. I've had Craig for 142 and 152, and I would've taken her for 162 if she was teaching it. 142 is an easy class just put REAL effort into Aleks and do the reading when you don't understand. Prepare ye self for 152.
Colleen was a wonderful, respectable, and intelligent chemistry professor. I felt like I was in good hands while taking her class. This is an insanely difficult topic, but I felt her clear lectures and awesome explanations really helped in making the class doable. I would never take 152 again, but if I had to I'd certainly want Craig by my side.
Craig made lectures interesting and tried to make the early mornings humorus. Would want her again for my Chem 152 section.
Prof. Craig's lectures are very clear and easy to understand. She moves through her lectures pretty fast. That's why you should always go back to the book to fully understand the materials. She also makes lectures fun by adding a few jokes here and there. I really like her class.
She is a reasonable grader and have very clear grading criteria. Her tests are not easy and you do have to work to get a good grade in class. She's a great lecturer and listens to student feedback.
Great teacher! All the content that she teaches in lecture shows up on the test; nothing more. She's pretty clear and funny. I rarely used my textbook and still managed to score above average on her tests. Her midterms have been entirely multiple choice (20). Difficulty wise, it's pretty standard; just do the practice problems she posts on Canvas.
I was an A+ AP chem student in high school. This class makes me feel unintelligent as the course material it self is super easy, but the tests are not close to the lectures or book material--don't even mention ALEKS. Your grade is determined by two midterms and final. They're multiple choice, and GPA detrimental; 5 pnts each and lots of trick Q's.
Very caring professor. Lectures are clear and helpful. The labs are a pain because the reports took up half of my studying time at UW, but they are helpful and the labs are fun. I have taken chem in the past four years in high school, but still feel this is a hard course. But if you do want to take chem, Dr. Craig is the right choice. Got a 4.0.
I liked Craig a lot, considering she was teaching basic intro level Chemistry, which is already very dry material, she managed to make the content more enjoyable by showing us video examples, showing us cartoons and when she couldn't do either she would throw a joke in to lighten the mood. Her study guides are straight forward, but tough class.
For not having a strong background in chem, Colleen was great and had very clear lectures that were easy to follow. She is very clear about what the tests will be like. I did not like the labs and lab reports- those were usually unclear. But overall as a professor she was fantastic. And she looks like Snow White from once upon a time!
Passionate lecture, easy exam. I am taking her chem 152 now, still enjoying the course.
Absolutely amazing. Especially in comparison to the other lecturers, I guarantee you will not regret taking her class.
I had 142 and 152 with her. She explains the contents clearly, and her tests are fairly easy. She is always passionate for teaching.
Bluntly speaking, she is not easy. Her tests are all multiple choice, 5 points each. She's extremely sneaky. She intentionally puts small things in her questions to trip students up. Her tests aren't that fair. Her lectures are considered better compared to other teachers, but it's not like I learned much anyways. Warning: She's super conceptual.
Colleen Craig is the best gen chem professor. The material is hard but she guides you through it with a good attitude and all sorts of ways to study and understand the material better. I liked her focus on concepts, and not just rote memorization; it'll really help you in later classes. Her expectations and grading criteria are clear.
She explains everything you need to know in lecture, and the worksheets/practice tests she prepares supplement the lectures well. If you watch the lectures, do the worksheets, and do the practice tests, you will ace this class. I thought Chem 152 was much easier than 142, mainly because the material was easier and she taught it well.
Dr. Craig is a great professor. She's the type of professor that if you have to move your schedule around a bit to get her, it's worth the hassle. 152 is definitely tough, but her lectures reinforce the textbook well, she gives ample study materials for the exams, and you can tell she really cares about the students. Plus, she's pretty funny.
Dr. Craig is a fantastic lecturer, gives great demos in class, and is just hilarious (occasionally swears in class and makes fun of herself). She knows the material super well and loves questions during office hours. She's super accessible outside of class either in OH or by meeting. The chem series is challenging, but she makes it interesting!
Dr. Craig is an amazing professor who truly cares about her students. She works hard to make difficult material more comprehensible to students, and is always open to answering questions.
She's a great gen chem teacher. Her lectures were structured and clear. She's engaging and funny. She cares if you get the material or not. Ask for help and she will give it. Didn't give much supplementary material, but tests where pretty easy- some multiple choice and free response.
Overall, good professor. Her tests were all multiple choice and she gave practice exams with a lot of problems very similar to what would be on the test.
Dr. Craig is my favorite professor at UW so far. She cares about whether you understand the material and makes herself available for help outside of class. She's also hilarious and a very approachable person. 10/10 would recommend
I took Craig for the whole general chemistry series. She explains concepts well in lecture and cares about student's understandings. Her tests are fairly straightforward but can sometimes be difficult. I recommend doing the EOC book problems she suggests regularly as part of your studying. Definitely take her for gen chem if you can!
I just cant with her. Also, stop swearing in lecture
I had Prof Craig for 152 and 162. She gives all the tools to succeed but the concepts can be hard to wrap your head around. Take advantage of office hours, section worksheets, and practice exams and you will know what to expect on exams. She was fun and enthusiastic in lecture! Overall class was enjoyable
She was a great prof in my opinion. She definitely covered all the material one needed to know during lecture and she was engaging and seemed like she genuinely wanted her students to do well. Lectures are on panopto, but she answers a lot of student questions during lecture so it's best to actually show up in case you have questions.
Dr. Craig is one of the better intro Chem options. Her tests for 142/152 are multiple choice, but 162 midterms had short answers. The tests are doable with moderate studying. Pay attention to all the little ways she can trick you on exams (unit conversions etc.) They're fairly simple and based around chemical equations which she gives you on test.
Anyone who has the chance to take 142, 152, or 162 with Craig is exceedingly lucky. Make sure to do the suggested End of Chapter questions and go to her office hours. She gets more and more funny/AWESOME the more Gen Chem classes you take with her. Her tests can be tricky but if you take advantage of the study materials she provides you'll be fine.
She is alright in my opinion. As a person and professor, she is humorous and concise. Her explanations can help a lot. However, her tests are tricky. Only 20 multiple choice questions and she puts tricky questions in there. Just make sure to do all the practices.
She is amazing. Go for her lectures before the section is filled out!!!
Her lectures are fun. There's an easy quiz every week in quiz section. You take the quiz individually first and then in groups with a scratch card. Your individual score * 0.8 + group score * 0.2 is your final score for the quiz. All midterms and finals are multiple choice.
Excellent lectures in Chem Dept.
Makes her test as hard as possible. Gives exam reviews that are so much easier than the actual test. Would never take her again.
You will do well in this class if you put in the work. She lectures great and is there for office hours. Her exam review packets are not the best, but the weekly quizzes and review sheets definitely are, even though the review sheets are not multiple choice like the exams. Highly recommend reading the textbook before the lecture, it will help a lot
Colleen Craig is a great professor. She gives out all the resources for her students to be successful, but you will have to put in time and work to be successful. Her quizzes and tests are pretty tricky, but as long as you don't fall back and do all the necessary studying you'll be fine.
Class was extremely simple do the end of chapter questions and you'll do well on the tests. Make sure to do the weekly worksheets to prepare for the quizzes. Test averages are pretty low but the tests weren't hard or crazy, actually pretty reasonable
I don't like chemistry, but Craig made it bearable. Her lectures are clear, she's funny and entertaining, and she's fair. If you have to take chemistry, try and take it with her.
I really like her lectures because she is engaging and knows for the most part how to explain clearly and goes through examples/problems. Her tests and weekly quizzes are in a way tricky but if you read the questions and answers carefully and look for the small details you will do fine. Can't wait to take chem 152 with her again
I really enjoyed having Craig as my CHEM142 professor. Her lectures were not only informative, but entertaining as well. She makes it clear what she wants you to know for the quizzes, exams and finals, so it makes studying a bit more manageable.
Craig was an amazing professor and very clear with her outline on how things will be graded and what you need to study for quizzes and midterms. Not to mention her lectures were pretty funny as well, although you can always look them up online with no penalty. Take advantage of the weekly worksheets and study guides she provides! Very helpful.
Dr. Craig is very clear about course requirements and lets you know exactly how tests will work, even giving you the breakdown of number of problems per unit that will appear on the test. She even prepares worksheets specific to the test rather than just saying, "look in the textbook". She clearly cares about student success and works hard for it.
Craig is a good lecturer, but it is not necessary to go. You can do panopto, but I did fine just doing the ALEKS problems. She does experimental testing with group portions, so that made it easier, but it was still necessary to study and do practice problems before tests
Ah Dr Craig. Her love of chemistry is shown in her classes. She genuinely cares about her students. Shes is also just a super reasonable person. Class is challenging but I dont get board. The curve is real but thats the UW. Shes super funny and is a natural teacher. Tests a reasonable but sometimes easy to make silly mistakes on.
Getting above average is doable, tests just end up harder than how she teaches concepts in class.
Although her lectures were okay, her tests are horribly hard. One could do well above average on lab reports, quizzes, and ALEKS but have a barely average grade because of exams. She provides practice material that is very unprepatory, because her exams end up being 10x harder. Her TAs are horrid too. I will never take a class with her again.
Dr. Craig is one of the best professors I've had at college. I ended up taking her for the entire general chemistry sequence and loved it. She really knows her stuff, is hilarious, and keeps lectures entertaining. Take advantage of her office hours and ask questions in class, she will answer in different ways until you understand it.
Prof. Craig is extremely intelligent, but honestly too intelligent to be teaching a 600 person freshman course. Her lectures go very fast and are very informationally dense. Not to mention horrifically boring. Getting a good grade on labs and ALEKS are very easy. Midterms and finals are INCREDIBLY difficult and nothing like the practice exams...
Good teacher
Really kind and knowledgable and teaches a 600 person class effectively. Only problem is, her slides don't help at all. She's very good at explaining but she goes fast so its hard to take good notes. Take notes from the textbook the night before lecture then go the next day and just listen, way easier. Tests are hard but fair, I found labs worse.
Honestly I don't understand why people like her so much. Dr. Craig is the definition of a teacher in a weed out class. Don't get me wrong she is a good lecturer but her exams are hard and super tricky. If you make one mistake that answer will appear on the exam as they are multiple choice. Be ready to put a ton of work into this class. I hate her
I hate multiple choice exams. But she teaches clearly so that's a plus. Pretty funny sometimes in her lectures. But oh my god multiple choice exams. They either help you or screw you over because of simple mistakes.
Not a good professor. Her exam test your adeptness to identify tricks, not your understanding of the content. Large amounts of studying will not help you do well on exams. Learn her tricks in the first midterm. Good lecturer but skips of important content. Get ready for a lot of textbook reading.
Extremely good lecturer, makes very difficult concepts easy to understand. The class itself is very challenging, however.
She's hilarious and an engaging lecturer, but her tests are designed to trick you and are very hard. Her practice problems and tests will do little to prepare you. She expects a VERY high level of understanding of the material from mainly freshmen students
Didn't go to class all quarter, ended up with a 3.7. Watched her Panopto recordings the night before, went in, averaged 85 between the three exams (2 midterms and a final). She uses really tricky test questions that are designed to exploit small mistakes. Be sure to check over all your answers, learn her tricks from the first midterm.
Craig is very passionate about chemistry and that came through loud and clear in every lecture. As someone who was taking this class for a natural world credit, I was astounded by the fact that she got me invested in the class and pushed myself to understand the content. Hilarious and knowledgeable, I will miss being in her class!
Colleen is a great gen chem professor. You can tell that she truly wants everyone to succeed in her class, which is why she always takes pauses during her lectures to clarify anything for her students. She makes herself very accessible outside of class as well. 152 is tough, but if you attend lectures and ask questions you'll succeed.
Craig always proves to be an amazing professor. 152 is arguably the hardest in the General Chemistry series but if you pay attention to her lectures and work on the worksheets and review packets she provides you should do fine. Really cares about how well her students do, and she's one of the funniest lecturers I have!
The content covered in class can be challenging or boring at times (especially the Thermodynamics unit) but her humor and energy makes everything worth it. Midterms and finals are clear cut and she's not out to destroy your grade (although if you don't study it may seem like that). One of the best Chem professors.
I had Dr. Craig for Chem 142 and Chem 152 and she was a great professor. Tests are multiple choice and there are many trick questions, but with enough practice doing worksheets and going to office hours, you should be just fine. Take advantage of her office hours because she goes over material in more detail than in lecture.
Dr. Craig's lectures were extremely helpful and clear. I think she highlighted everything that would be on the test well so there was no confusion about what she wanted us to learn. Also if something was not gone over in detail in class, it would most of the time not be on the test. She's also a very funny professor and keep the lecture hall awake.
I had 142 and 152 with professor Craig, exams do have tricky questions but easy. Which means no matter you are smart or not, you can get 4.0 with no problem. Practice and practice. Her chemistry classes are the only classes I felt confident about. I felt supported and was given enough sources to study with. Best professor throughout my first year.
MOST DEFINITELY TAKE! ONE OF THE BEST CHEM TEACHERS AT UW
The best chem prof I had. She actually drops ur lowest grade and grades you on improvement, I did really bad below standard deviation on both exams and did really well on final and got 3.7. Her tricks are what she bolds in the tests, and make sure to read the textbook, it's conceptually easy to understand.
She's an okay teacher. Tests aren't too hard but she really knows how to trip people over. Didn't get the grade I wanted (3.5+) because of this. If I were to take this class I again, I would recommend timing yourself and doing questions from the textbook.
Dr. Craig knows what she is doing. Her tests are tricky and may make you cry immediately afterwards but she teaches the materially very clearly. Use the resources that she gives you and do all practice problems. Quizzes in 142 will stress you out but don't affect your grade that much. Amazing, engaging lecturer.
Shes a really respectable person who knows her stuff and has methods to help you learn. I took the easy way out and suffered for it. ALEKS helps more than you think. She helps with concepts but not with actual grades that falls to the TAs. Her class wasnt the worst 700 person lecture out there for sure.
She's so funny and explains everything very well. Lectures are mandatory because participation counts. It is necessary to be very organized because this class requires a lot of work.
For a lecture hall with 500+ students, Colleen handles it extremely welleven managing to throw in some good jokes here and there.
She gives you points just for showing up to class and participating. Every class she does example problems and takes questions from students to clarify concepts AND she gets through all the content. For tests, she tells you specifically what concepts will or will not be included. She is a very reasonable teacher and she is also very funny.
Chem 142 is hard, but I enjoyed taking the course with Dr. Craig. She made lectures very engaging and interesting, which I appreciated. Lectures aren't technically mandatory but she does participation-based PollEverywhere questions throughout each one so it's definitely beneficial to go.
Professor Craig has incredible command of information and good explanations for pretty much everything in general chemistry which made it easy for me to understand the content. Polleverywhere every lecture that counts toward your grade. Exams were fairly similar to the practice exams and weekly worksheets and not too difficult. Curved to a 2.7.
Gen chem series SUCKS, but Colleen made it better. She is great at providing alternate explanations for difficult concepts if you just aren't getting what the textbook/lecture says. She makes a notoriously intimidating subject/series approachable. If you have the option, take the whole gen chem series with her. She is the BEST!
Best CHEM142 lecturer. Pre-game lectures by reading Zumdahl and lesson notes before the lectures. She gives concept tests which help your understanding and are participation based. You could skip 1-2 lectures without penalty. She's funny as well, sometimes does experiments in class. With all said though, it's very hard to get a 4.0.
I hate chemistry, but Dr. Craig made it more enjoyable. I actually enjoyed her lectures, and her analogies helped me understand some of the more advanced concepts. Her tests contain trick questions, which make it hard for someone who already struggles with chemistry to do well on them.
Dr. Craig is a great professor who really cares about the student and the content that she is laying out. I would highly recommend her courses. Mind you the work can be difficult, it is worth the effort put in to get the information out.
Craig is a caring and engaging professor. She provides examples in her slides and the tests are similar to the practice tests. If you want to succeed in her class you will need to go get additional help if you need it. Craig does have some pacing problems, so if you need a professor that sticks to a strict schedule there may be problems.
Criag is an amazing professor! Her tests are fair and manageable if you understand the practice study questions along with the quiz section problems. Her lectures are engaging and she honestly is just super great in and outside of class!
Dr. Craig is a fantastic professor who truly puts 110% of her effort towards her students. Throughout winter quarter, she regularly livestreamed office hours from home the weekend before the exam. She's also incredibly honest about exams and gives a detailed breakdown, and lectures are very engaging as well. Definitely worth taking a class with!
Okay, the tea is that Professor Craig is the best. Only professor that has made me actually love chemistry. She makes it seem easy and explains everything in the best ways. There is weekly Aleks homework, 2 midterms, a final, and 6 lab reports I think. Go to her lectures, office hours, and ask her questions. She is so helpful and actually cares.
Wonderful human being and professor! Highly recommend!
Lectures are generally clear even through the class schedule is very disorganized and does not line up with most things she talks about. Her exams are very tricky and all multiple choice so there's no chance of partial credit. Grades on a curve and has no idea where to set the average GPA.
A good option for the chem series. Highly desirable especially for 162.
I took Dr. Craig for all three-quarters of General Chemistry and loved it! She also really loves Chem 152 and excited about 142 and 152! For the first part of 162, she is really good and excited about the material, but toward the end (going into OCHEM), she's not as interested (she's a computational chemist). She really cares about her students!
Fine lecturer but probably not the best chem teacher you could get at UW. Craig is nice and approachable but the way her class was constructed just doesn't seem to fit with the complexity of the course. She skipped over lots of content and the midterms were way too simple for the complexity of the content which made the curve ridiculous.
I loved Colleen this quarter. I really have no other complaints except for that she goes too slow in lecture (spent way too much time on Lewis dot structure) and puts too many tricks on tests. She makes lectures entertaining and I only wanted to fall asleep a couple times in class. She gives amazing review packets for the tests and really cares.
Colleen Craig was a very good lecturer and her lecture style was really helpful for me in understanding the concepts. Her concept tests during her lectures were helpful for us to understand the concepts. Her tests were relatively straightforward too with a few tricks and conceptual stuff here and there. I LOVE COLLEEN BAEE <3 LANDSLIDEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Chem142 is hard but she makes it bearable -very kind and cares about students -lots of supplemental material & resources -well structured lectures, however often gets behind and assigns lectures as extra hw -all exams multiple choice -doesnt help much with labs -GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Shes so helpful -uses poll everywhere (helpful)
Craig is amazing! I had her for 142 and 152. She really looks to help students, encouraging everyone to ask questions. She knows what she's teaching very well. I would defintiely recommend her!
She is honestly the best chem prof I have ever had. It took me a quick sec to get the flow of the class, but if you go to office hours from the start and ask questions and do the worksheets she provides, you can/will do great. She is a pun nerd and makes classes pretty entertaining. Super nice, super helpful and really straightforward.
Best Chemistry Prof by far. Out of all the instructors offered by UW in the general chemistry department your best bet is Craig. She keeps lecture engaging and actually puts in effort to making sure you understand the content.
Prof Craig was an entertaining lecturer who really cared about her students! We had reading quizzes before every lecture & poll everywhere during class.. All of our tests were multiple choice and fairly similar to the practice exams. My only complaint was that the tests were a bit tricky and the curve was a bit high, but overall not too hard.
I had Dr. Craig for the first two quarters of gen chem. Her lectures are incredibly helpful in understanding the material and precise (occasionally to a fault), and her greatest quality is that she is consistent. She does not intentionally throw curveballs on exams, and she cares a lot about her students actually understanding the material.
Great lecturer, but poor grading system. She doesn't grade on a curve so in order to get a 4.0 you must get over 98% in the class. If you are not concerned with your grade at the end of the quarter she is a fantastic lecturer and explains concepts extremely well, but if your grade matters for your major or graduate school I would not recommend.
Craig is a pretty good lecturer overall. She's easy to understand and concepts seem pretty simple when she talks about it in class, but her exams are difficult. She switches up small things in her questions that people generally don't pay attention to so it's really easy to perform badly on her exams.
Craig is an excellent lecturer, as she gives clear explanations. She genuinely cares for the learning of her students. However, her exams were often quite hard, especially having to do complex problems in a short time period.
Craig is often said to be the best chem prof. I took her 162, and I can say that as a person, Craig is awesome. Spring quarter was online b/c of Covid. As per UW standard, the grading system was supposed to be accommodating. Craig was not. - 98% was 4.0 and every quiz is 10 q, out of 50pts- all m.c. No partial credit - fast-paced. No mercy. Sad.
142: Great and entertaining lectures, concepts were explained thoroughly and for the most part left me feeling prepared for exams 152: lectures were still entertaining but I (as well as many of my peers) were very confused by a lot of what she was saying. however, chem152 is already a really tough course by its own merit so FIND OUTSIDE RESOURCES
Prof. Craig really puts effort into helping her students. She hosted plenty of Q&A sessions during online quarter. However, the lectures she posted were panopto recordings from past years - and they were hard to follow given that the rooms were full of people and distractions. Exams are mcq, and can be difficult to take at times.
Practice problems DON'T reflect the kind of questions you get on exams. Basically hard work studying the given review materials is punished and going to TA review sessions where they basically tell you what's on the test is rewarded. Extremely frustrating that the prof won't focus on the material we'll be tested on/give us a chance to practice. :(
I learned a lot, but her tests are awful. On every quiz there was at least one question that she admitted after was poorly written or misleading, but she refused to do anything about it. Then she submitted grades on the last day, so we couldn't do anything about them and changed her grading curve from the syllabus. She has no respect for students
I'm a fan of Craig for the most part, but this class was just okay. Problems in the book and in ALEKS aren't great for review, go to the TA sessions and look at old exams instead. Don't skip your quiz sections either, the problems there are like your quizzes. Lectures can be hard to follow because they're from a few quarters ago.
I think Craig did okay compared to the rest of the chemistry department in accommodating to online learning. She had Q&A sessions later into the night, so that was cool. That said, grading is still tough. The short quizzes are stressful, and quiz section material doesn't really help.
Craig is an okay professor for the most part. All the lectures are prerecorded and her Q & A sessions run a little fast. Her quizzes are quite difficult so prepare to study. Additionally, she is very hard to reach outside of class. She doesn't respond to emails promptly or at all. Overall not terrible, but I would take another Prof. if you can.
Prof Craig is a great person and a super approachable professor. Although it's not an easy 4.0, you will REALLY understand the concepts that are taught. Free response quizzes can be tough; 3 questions for about 30-45 minutes. Great lecturer, keeps you engaged, talks pretty quickly, office hours seem to help a lot. She makes the class enjoyable.
Craig is a great professor. She takes time to explain everything clearly and answers all questions during the lectures. The only negative is that the grading criteria for the quizzes are harsh sometimes.
Craig is amazing! She always takes time during class to make sure everyones questions are answered and makes sure it is easy to get ahold of her outside of lectures. That being said quizzes are graded quite harshly and can be brutal when it comes to some things like units.
Colleen Craig is an alright professor whos always willing to help students with her office hours and Q & A sessions. However, she offers very little guideline and material on what to study prior to tests, which is very frustrating since tests and quizzes are worth so much of your grade. Quizzes are also very hard to score well on due to time.
She is very nice and answers questions well but her quizzes are IMPOSSIBLE. Even after doing all of her study guides, you can't get a good grade on them. The class is really difficult by itself and I don't think she helped. I wanted to like her because she was super nice to your face, but then she would stab you in the back with the tests.
It's hard to grade Craig specifically because CHEM 152 lectures were prerecorded and divided amongst all other profs. Two "Reflections" a week, which were really easy to gain credit. She held review lectures on Mondays and Wednesdays. Very willing to help students, but quizzes/final can be really difficult, especially with the short time offered.
I really liked Professor Craig's class! She was really nice and genuinely cares about her students. She will go beyond the allotted class time and office hour to answer everyone questions. The quizzes are fair. If you do the worksheets and for the most part pay attention in class you will do good (or average) on the quizzes. A really solid teacher
She has little respect for students and does not seem to care about our experience or whether we are learning.
Amazing at explaining ideas and concepts in concise lectures-- in-person, I have full faith she'd be one of the best profs to take for chem-- but online structure has all the professors teaching different topics so she only taught one chapter-- for me, also, quizzes were very difficult and always a time rush. I'd recommend a different prof online.
Professor Craig gives amazing lectures! To do well in her classes, make sure you understand everything she taught in class. She's a harsh grader, but she helps simplify the harsh content to help students understand better. I would love it if she was my ochem professor.
Nice and funny lady but she gives tough exams. Get ready to study hard and attend lectures to understand the materials. Office hours are helpful. Though her final exam got me screaming, crying and throwing up because it did not match the practice exam she posted on canvas whatsoever.
Dr. Craig is the best chemistry professor Ive ever had. She cares about her students and wants to help people as much as possible. She made the lectures fun and personal. Take good notes from lectures, have a good understanding of the lecture practice problems, and do the discussion worksheets. Shes very approachable and easy to ask questions.
Professor Craig was the best! She always explains questions and concepts very patiently and never makes you feel stupid for asking questions. Her class is lecture heavy, but they are engaging and include text/pictures/videos/poll everywhere questions(for all types of learners). She's very good at what she does, I had a great time in her class!
imo 152 was easier than 142. I think that the Craig and Keller worked closely together and made a good team. We would have cumulative quizzes every two weeks which kind of suck but your lowest two get dropped. Craig was a great prof and you can tell that she really enjoys the subject.
For the class, learn from my mistakes and please do the ALEKS. Labs are pretty straight forward and both add up to about 25% of ones grade. At times she is disorganized and is slow to reply to emails. Really take the time to study the lecture slides a bit and really study the worksheets. Put aside several hours in this class and you'll be okay
Colleen is a really great teacher. She is super caring and does not make you feel like an idiot for asking obvious questions. Her quizzes can be a little tough sometimes but doable if you study. I personally never read the textbook and I still managed to score consistently above the average. Just study her worksheets and you'll do fine.
While she is an amazing professor, she was silent on how she would grade the class. 300+ students were hit with lower grades than anticipated because she would ghost us whenever we would ask her to put in our grades. This frustrated me and many others, as we were shocked to see the grades we received. Beware of the syllabus.
Prof Craig was a great professor - until it came to grading. I scored above average on every quiz, but I felt as if that wasn't reflected in my final grade. She changed the grade system at the last minute, and did not give us an explanation for the new system until after final grades were due. You will learn a lot but your GPA won't show it.
Professor Craig was a great person and lecturer, but her grading policies were unclear and very difficult to understand. Grades were submitted before we had a chance to review them and ask questions and the algorithm used drastically changed grades from what they were previously.
You're graded against the average of the class, which means more than 5% can get a 4.0, but also means for some quizzes a 25/25 is worth less than a 20 on others, because the average on the first one was higher. The raw grades are then changed based on this. This weighing makes sure you get the best score, but seeing your test grade lowered sucks.
Professor Craig is a good teacher however the material is very difficult and the quizes reflect that. She does a pretty good job explaining concepts and the workload outside of class isn't terrible and is easy to ace. The quizes are every two weeks however and very difficult, bringing in concepts from 152 sometimes. Poor testers may struggle
Craig is a really good prof for the gen chem series 152/62 especially. Her lectures are thorough and you get a lot of practice between the worksheets and R&P sessions. Worksheets are very helpful when studying for quizzes. Lots of resources in general! Individual category grading is fair, beware of overall gpa grading though.
She is easily my favorite professor I have ever had at UW. Colleen is incredibly intelligent and cares about whether or not her students understand the material. She is the first professor to ever express empathy for my struggles with severe anxiety and how that affects grades sometimes.
Prof Craig a pretty good lecturer. She did a good job explaining complicated topics and making sure the class understood them. She paused a lot to answer our questions. Her grading policies are weird, though. It's curved and each quiz is graded against the mean. Some quizzes I got above the average, yet my curved score was lower than the raw score
OK professor. Very kind and funny, wants you to succeed. Unnecessary active reading assignments to do before every lecture. Not great at explaining things to people who are not chemistry inclined. Exams are frequent and very difficult, way more difficult than any ALEKs problems. Labs are long and sometimes tedious but interesting.
Colleen tries I think her best and is more enthusiastic than other chem professors I've had. She is fairly accessible if you have questions. Exams are broken into multiple choice and free response; BE WARY they WILL take points off if you don't include unit. Also TOO MANY EXAM CORRECTIONS! DURING the exam! This happened on ALL our exams (Stressful)
I was scared going into 152 but Colleen made it easier for me. Her lectures were very good and engaging. She is very organized and was clear about how she graded everything. Very difficult class but I'm glad I had her for it. She (along with all the TAs) also had plenty of office hours. I will say the labs sucked though. So boring and monotonous.
I really love Professor Craig! If you do the worksheets, attend the lectures, and attend office hours, you will do fine. I for some reason really struggled with this course, but that is not a reflection of Prof. Craig or this class. She provides worksheets that are really good and offers multiple quizzes throughout the quarter.
Prof. Craigs lectures are exceptional. You can tell she truly cares about the material and student understanding. You would be doing yourself a disservice by not attending her lectures as she is an extraordinary speaker. Exams were pretty difficult. Doing and understanding all the questions on the worksheets is required to do well on exams.
She is the best chemistry teacher you can ask for. For a class as foundational as chem 152, taking it with Craig was a godsend. However, her tests are incredibly difficult as she is able to create problems that intensely test your concept application skills. Be prepared to do a ton of practice problems to have any chance of doing well on tests.
Based on other reviews, I picked her and I am glad I did. Teaches well and has great communication about office hours availability and such.
Craig's lectures are straightfoward, engaging, and truly help you understand the material. She clearly puts a lot of effort into her Powerpoint slides. Very receptive to questions during lectures. Her Canvas is super organized and easy to use. Exams were doable if you studied the Discussion section worksheets.
Professor Craig is one-of-a-kind! She an engaging and funny, and she makes difficult topics far more digestible. Chem 142 is a tough intro class but it's worth it to learn from her and I will be taking the rest of the series with her as my professor as well.
Dr.Craig is a very nice person, but if you are a student who may need a little more time to process things, I suggest choosing a different professor. She doesn't necessarily explain things, and just states them. She expects a lot of things to be common sense. Maybe it depends on learning style, but I personally did not comprehend much from lecture.
Just ok. A lot of office hour opportunities. Lectures are less informative and more of a groundwork for learning from the textbook/other sources on your own. Tends to make a lot of mistakes that lead to last-minute and annoying corrections- exams, review pages, etc. Collaborative teaching style, leaves opportunities for questions during lectures.
Class was definitely quite difficult for me, content moves very fast. She is a good lecturer and cares about her students learning, but often times doesn't take time to explain things. The lectures are mostly just practice problems, kinda boring imo. The midterms were my biggest gripes. Only a few questions. If you miss one tiny thing, ur screwed.
Midterms count the most towards your grades so I would highly suggest doing your best on the midterms. Grading wise she is the most lenient as she gives partial credits on midterms. Do not procrastinate since this class does have Aleks &labs, if you stay on top of it you will do fine. Would suggest Prof Craig. Attend office hours for sure if stuck.
It is a tough class, but only because the material is hard. She wants you to succeed. Gives lots of partial credit on exams, and midterms/the final matter the most. Biggest advice is to do the end of chapter problems and the discussion section worksheets to prepare, those emulated the exams the most. Go to quiz section!
Professor Craig lives up to her reputation as one of the best chemistry teachers at UW. She cares deeply about the subject and is passionate during lectures. Taking notes by hand is the most beneficial way to succeed in her class. Make sure to pay attention to Aleks as well. Tests are hard but never unfair and significant partial credit is given.
Prof. Craig is awesome! She is an excellent lecturer and class was never boring because of the energy she brought. Tests were really challenging but she prepared us well. Labs were straightforward for the most part and graded relatively leniently.
Her lectures never really helped me understand the content. I went back many times through her slides and googled several things after class just to understand what was being taught, as she didn't do a really good job explaining concepts. Tests are graded with deductions, and you can miss points on labs for inaccurate sig figs - very frustrating.
Does not explain things well and just has bullet points and reads off of them during lecture, which are copy and pasted from the book. I wish I took Barrows for 142 so I can have a better foundation for 152. You have to do all the work yourself if you take her, because lectures add no benefit.
Made a difficult class a little more manageable. I emailed her about a personal matter and she accommodated my needs (at her own discretion), caring and funny. A lot of homework but it helped. Quiz section was very important and similar to exam format. Midterms were 6 questions with 3ish long answers, grading was not too harsh & had partial credit.
Great lecturer, very engaged with the students, and always willing to answer questions. Tests are a bit tricky but still feel fair with the opportunity for partial credit. The course is tough due to its nature but she makes it more manageable/enjoyable. Do the work, practice the back-of-the-book problems before exams, and keep up on ALEKS & labs.
I had Barrows for Chem 142 last quarter and dropped it. This quarter, I have Craig, and it's a whole new world. Her lectures are engaging, and she breaks down concepts easily. Her pacing is good. The homework is manageable. The tests are hard, but there is opportunity for partial credit, something that is very helpful. 10/10 recommend.
She sucks at lecturing. Ask other people for her past exams and study those for best results. The first unit is super confusing but don't give up. Worst part of this class is the lab, super tedious and a fair bit of work. If you take 110 before this you will be fine cause Colleen teaches at a million miles an hour. Use Roxi Hulet on YT for ALEKS.
Her lectures were boring and generally just said exactly what the textbooks were saying. Just take Barrows' class instead.
Don't take 152 with Craig. She is nice and all but the exams are ridiculous. She operates using a flipped classroom style which many fail to note. You are essentially learning and teaching yourself the material online from upwards of four different professors who all teach differently. Tests rely heavily on free response which will tank your grade.
PLEASE take craig for 142. I retook this class after failing in barrows and its the best decisions ive made. Her lectures helped me so much and i was able to understand the material. If you can please take craig, the class is hard but if u have a good prof u can make it.
Craig is a fantastic professor, super clear, answers questions, comprehensible slides. Exams were tough but nothing outside of the material. Repetition, practice problems, and slide reviews will get you through though. BUT, she goes a bit fast, sometimes it's easier to catch up on notes after lecture and just absorb the content in the moment.
Lectures are good, plenty of polls to test knowledge in class, and will answer any questions you have. Can be a bit fast, but slides are all on canvas and lectures are recorded, so its fine. Reviewing slides is also pretty useful for studying. Tests are fine, won't throw anything unexpected, but they aren't the easiest either.
As a Professor not bad. She did get behind lectures quite a few times. Labs are more tedious than 152. Partial credit and her grading criteria allowed me to pass which was a pro. Do a study group if you can, learn the material by doing practice problems, ask for help please do not hesitate. Focus on exams the most they count way more than aleks/labs
She's one of the best chemistry professors at UW, good lectures and her exams are fair. They are hard but there is a system where one of your three midterms gets dropped which makes it so the class is easier to pass.
Prof Craig is the best chemistry professor there is for Chem 152. This class is hard bc of acids/bases, and thermodynamics, but Craig teaches it the best. Barrows tests you on sig figs, and any minor detail in chem, whereas Craig just wants u to know the concepts. Her exams were much more realistic and her averages were higher than Barrows'.
I took her for both 142 and 152 back to back and loved her both quarters. 152 is significantly harder than 142 so people who just took her for that might be neg. biased due to the content already being hard. Lots of room for partial credit on exams which is so nice oppose to multiple choice. Her office hours are great and she's just overall fun.
Myself and a bunch of people are kinda disappointed w/ her for Chem162. Heard amazing things about her, but her flipped classroom was poorly designed (old lectures that don't fit vid format) and she's not very clear in her lecturing. But she does have a lot of office help and is pretty funny! Tests aren't very difficult. Her lecturing is just...meh
I looove Colleen and her jokes and enthusiasm and savvy but the flipped learning is not it. It feels like a ton of work for little reward, and I'd much rather her explain concepts in class - if we have difficulties with specific problems, we can take that matter into our own hands and get outside help. I really enjoyed her teaching style in 142.
One of the best professor
I took Chem 142, 152, and 162 with Professor Craig, and she is an amazing professor. As a freshman worried about college, she made the transition easy. Despite only having a 10th-grade intro to chemistry, I earned a 4.0 in Chem 142, a 3.8 in Chem 152, and a 4.0 in Chem 162 thanks to her excellent teaching. She is always available and a great prof.
Professor Craig is a challenging but rewarding instructor. While her lectures can move quickly, staying engaged and using supplementary resources like the textbook and unstuckstudy AI can really help solidify the material. The exams are tough but manageable with diligent practice.
ALEKS is very tedious. The lecture does not help much; most of the work must be done independently. Grades are deducted from labs for minor reasons. Many online assignments are hard to keep track of as we gotta interchange between 3 apps and most of all, the exams are insanely difficult compared to her ability to teach.
Craig is a great professor, who is humorous at times and always stays after class to answer students' questions. However, ALEKS was overly tedious and labs would be graded poorly due to the smallest things. The class also expects you to self learn most of the material :(
I had Colleen Craig for 142 and she was great. Her exams are hard but if you practice the DS worksheets you will be fine. ALEKS is tedious but will get you good at foundational work. She also has no control of labs because she doesn't teach them. Also she can't spoon feed everything so you will have to teach yourself some content.
Great lecturer, funny, very chill person tbh. BUT, the midterms are annoying, they are 8-10 ish questions and out of 40 points, you only have 40-45 min, they aren't the most diff questions, but they have WIERD wording. Strict grading too, I got the right answer for an open ended but used a diff method, so 5 points off, 5/40 points off = 12.5%.
Lectures are clear and informative, but the homework is unrelated and requires you to learn how to do problems on your own. Witty jokes keep class fun. Tests are graded quite harshly, requiring units on all calculations (even intermediate units!) The TAs are hit or miss, and the labs are the worst part of my week. ALEKs (hw) assignments are LONG.
Gen chem is miserable in general, but prof Craig made it bearable and easier to understand.
she clearly has passion for the subject but shes so overrated on here. She's an average lecturer and the test concepts are easy but sometimes there are little things you can miss like not writing the calculation for molar mass. also there isnt any cure afaik and its graded on linear regression where 0.7 is a 40 percent and a 4.0 is a 98
Prof. Craig is very nice and her office hours are super helpful. Midterms and final are a large part of the grade, but if you do the recommended study materials you be ok.
Coming into CHEM142 with no chemistry experience, Prof. Craig did a great job explaining even simple concepts and teaching not just the 'what' but the 'why' for topics. Her exams were fair (and easy if you studied!) and she was very helpful during office hours. You do have to read quite a bit and go to lecture, but if you do, you will do well.
Professor Craig is great at explaining things. Usually, I didn't understand the readings from the textbooks, but Craig always made everything really easy to understand in lectures. Toward the end of the quarter though, she started going through slides fast and it was hard to take notes. To do well, make sure you do a bunch of practice problems.
Professor Craig was good at explaining material and would take time to answer peoples questions. The book we read is good for background knowledge but if you just look at the PowerPoint she makes then you'll still be able to understand. If professor Craig doesn't go over something in the lecture she will remove it from the exam so that's good.
Graded reading assignments three times a week, but they aligned with the work in each lecture. You get more information than you need from the current textbook, but it does provide good practice problems. Two midterms and a final, with a thorough information page posted about the content of each exam. Take any practice tests available.
Simply an amazing prof. Explains concepts clearly, gives extremely fair tests, and the majority of the work you do is beneficial. A lot of ppl struggle with intro. Chem courses, but that tends to be due to laziness/lack of preparedness for a college level class. If you‘re willing to work hard and have a solid chem foundation, you‘ll do well.
Def can't recommend Craig enough for the intro chem series. Lectures go by quickly but that's due to the amount of content that needs to be covered. Be ready to do lots of homework. ALEKS is frustrating, but super helpful. If you can, sign up for her class even if it's in the morning.
Her lectures are easy to follow, and Prof. Craig can be pretty funny. If you take her class, make sure to stay on top of ALEKS, as it can take a lot of time to finish, and if you fall behind it's frustrating to make up.
Professor Craig is great as far as gen chem professors go. Most problems with 142 are with the class curriculum or with the TAs, not Prof Craig herself. Lectures go by fast and she can be funny and witty at times. Labs and quiz sections were horrible due to my TA and I had to teach myself a lot of the content. Tests were brutally graded as well.
She was a great prof! engaging lectures and gave lots of practice, but the exams will have some stuff she doesn't go over, so do every discussion worksheet.
Great professor with great lectures. Chemistry is just overall very difficult, so don't slack off.
If you're picking a professor for chem, pick Craig, as she is the o
great professor and clear lecturer. the difficulty of her content on worksheets and tests are actually very repetitive and easy to identify the patterns of. would rec just glancing over slides/text the night before and it makes the next day of pollev and concepts wayyy easier. make sure to have your ta walk through the worksheets too.
I liked Craig, I thought she was nice. Her lectures were a little tough to get through and she rambled a lot (we ran out of time and didn't learn all the material by the end of the quarter). Ended up teaching myself a lot of the material. She's really nice though and her tests weren't horrible, the final was challenging but not the midterms.
The professor was passionate for what she was teaching, however I am not passionate about chemistry, so there was a bit of a disconnect.
Wasn't the most amazing lecturer, very slides heavy but wrote easy tests
She has great lectures that were very helpful conceptually which she combined with concept tests making it easy to understand. Overall the class content was not that difficult and her tests were very doable if you complete the aleks modules and the worksheets. She is very passionate about chemistry and I enjoyed going to class and wasnt bored.
I absolutely loved Dr. Craig! I would take her classes again in a heartbeat. Easily one of the best professors at UW.
Great lectures. Midterms were well aligned with material but final was completely different from midterms in terms of grading criteria and types of problems. Should do fine if you keep up with class.
Good explainer of concepts and cares about student learning.
While the chem department can be a pain, craig is a great professor! Her lectures were fun and engaging. I always felt that I walked out of lecture understanding the content much better than I did after reading the textbook. She also explicitly lays out what you need to know for the exams. Her tests are also pretty straightforward.
Good professor who explains things well. IMO shes good but very much overhyped. Everyone talks like shes the best professor ever and while she is good she isnt the best. Her lectures are fast paced so read ahead. Test 1 is very much concept based but then as the class goes more calculations come into play. Overall good teacher just not for me
she's definitely a good professor and does well at her job. she wasn't my favorite as a person, but seemed kind and taught well
She gave good lectures and covered the material well. Reading quizzes were helpful to keep you on track. Just keep up with ALEKs, readings, and use the discussion worksheets to study and you should be fine. Exams are a good mix of multiple choice, multiple selection, and free response.
her tests are really long. many different kind of questions .mostly follows class notes
Craig is the goat of gen chem fr
She's really good when it comes to her lectures but very vague on content/structure when it comes to tests. It trips you up and doesn't help with what to study or prepare for.
She removes things from Exams 2 days before the exam, so if you spend time working on those things, then you've wasted your time. Also has a lot of errors on her DS sheets. But her lectures are fun, she's funny.
Very nice and fun professor, but her exams are terrible. They are practically your whole grade and they are created to fail. They are too long for the time period given, and the practice tests given to help study are much easier in comparison to the exam, do not let it give you false hope that you will do well.
Professor Craig is very passionate about chemistry and has engaging lectures to back that up. She cares about every student and will answer questions at any point during the lecture. However, your grade is heavily dependent on test performance, which can often have much harder questions than the reviews. Overall, a good but difficult course.
Craig is passionate about what she teaches and makes lectures super engaging. She does a good job of building off of the textbook during lectures, and clearly outlines material covered on exams. Lab report grading can be a little difficult and ALEKS modules can be a lot but all support learning the material really well.
Professor Craig was amazing. She was enthusiastic about what she's teaching at 8:30 in the morning and her explanation made things easy to understand. It's easy to forget reading quizzes due the day before the lecture, so just beware. I liked chemistry but the professor made me like it even more👍
Very passionate professor, lectures are interesting and she is enthusiastic about the subject even early in the morning. Has reading quizzes due the night before lecture, but they usually take under 30 minutes and help with understanding her lectures since she can be fast at times. Very clear on what will be tested.
Professor Craig is known to be one of the better chemistry instructors at UW. She is clearly very passionate about the lecture topics and is very down-to-earth and accessible for a college professor. I found her class to be quite challenging, but I would still recommend her for any student needing to take and pass the gen chem series.
She was nice and all and her lectures were okay BUT IT DIDN'T REFLECT THE DIFFICULTY LEVET SHE TESTED US ON Her mid-terms and final are brutal she feeds on small mistakes and tricks her worksheets again doesn't reflect the difficulty level of her exams which is frustrating you leave the lecture thinking you understand everything but the exams are X
Professor Craig is very passinate and great at explaining concepts in a logical way. I would recommend her class to anyone taking 142. Do review sheets, DS worksheets, and some of the EOC problems she posts before tests to study. The tests are not that hard but it is very easy have small mistakes on tests add up.
Good lectures everything u need for exams will be in lecture and in learning objectives. Short reading and quiz due before every lecture. Aleks due every monday. Easy to follow labs if prepared but u can lose points on reports easily. 2 midterms and final is most of your grade but u study each learning objective using DS you will succeed.
Dr. Craig clearly cares about her students and their learning. While the class is generally difficult, she has engaging lectures and teaches well. The only issue with the class is a lack of applicable study materials provided. Most tests only have a multiple choice worksheet but there are no past exams or other free response materials to use.
I am shocked that this professor is still teaching at UW. She speeds through the lecture slides, & the TAs don't help at all. Test content was incredibly more difficult than material shown in class & homework. Time given for tests is inadequate & no one finishes the whole test & she even acknowledges this. I don't recommend her if you want to pass.
Textbook is sometimes a little hard to understand but the lectures are phenomenal. The pacing is a little inconsistent across lectures is the only issue there. The practice exams she gives out are way too easy though. She doesn't offer any previous year exams unfortunately. I recommend redoing discussion section worksheets for challenging practice.
