I dread going to the class everyday, she doesn't explain what she's doing and just expects that we're picking it up. Her quizzes are harder than the homework, but she does give you partial credit most of the time for trying. If you're good at math you'll be fine, otherwise if you need help once in a while, you'll be studying a lot!
Expects alot out of you, and thinks everyone remembers everything from past math classes. Tests are hard because she test you on past knowledge and the current material. Alot of work
young teacher so she struggles conveying some messages. Tests are pretty hard but is willing to help when she can
Since she is a newer professor, she struggles to maintain control of her classes, and her teaching method is pretty shady at times. Overall a decent professor though
This class was aweful, homework expectation is completely unreasonable, and the tests are extremely difficult, expect to spend at least 8hrs/week on homework.
Coleen Duffy is really a hard teacher and doesn't allow for her students to really comprehend what she is teaching them. The homework load is too insane for this class when you spend 1-3 hours per class period on homework, her class just becomes too overwhelming. She expects everyone to understand everything on the board she is writing, noone does.
She was pretty good, but I felt like her examples weren't always the most useful compared to what was on the test. Important to realize you can turn in the MapleTA as many times as you want!
I would advise avoidance of Professor Duffy. In-class notes consist of useless examples that won't help on the homework or tests. Expects high level of mathematic ability in a 104 class.
She is a very difficult professor to learn from. She moves very fast through class and expects you to have a very high level of understanding. Her tests are hard and she can't teach down to a MATH 104 student's level.
Colleen is extremely hard! You may go to her for help , however she doesnt help! Her tests are hard and the homework is a ridiculous amount! She also talks WAAAAY too fast and only gives examples for notes. She'd be better if she understood she needs to teach at a 104 level. avoid , if possible.
AVOID IF POSSIBLE! If you are great at math and remember everything you'll do okay. If you need help do not expect to get it. I easily spent 8-10 hours on HW during the week.
Professor Duffy is not a good professor. It is clear that she does not know how to teach. She goes extremely fast and doesn't know how to explain to someone under an intelligence level than her own. She's a nice person but don't take this class. I've heard from others that she teaches similar to a 300 level course.
Professor Duffy loves what she does and is eager to share her math enthusiasm with others. The material can get a bit confusing because she moves at a fast pace, but it is necessary for her to do so to complete the course requirements. Attending her office hours is very helpful. I am not a math person but have enjoyed her course anyway!
Really not that hard of a class. You get a full week to do the homework, followed by a 9pt quiz, and the only tests are the 2 midterms and the final. The notes you take don't always match up with the homework, but in the end match up with the quizes and midterms. So you will have to teach yourself a bit, but hey, thats college.
Extremely easy class. Attendance allegedly affects your grade, but I missed every Friday class and came away with a B. Sort of annoying, lots of homework and in-class exercises that are graded, but you can fake most of it.
It's hard to hate someone who is so nice. She's a great person, but a terrible teacher. She cannot explain anything in a way that isn't mathematical. We do WAY TOO MUCH in class exercises that are worth too big of a chunk of your grade. Terrible teacher, not really a difficult class but the way she teaches it makes it hard to follow. AVOID HER.
Prof Duffy is not a good teacher. As a person she is generally very nice, but she doesn't explain math well and is therefore not helpful. I did not enjoy this class.
Duffy is a nice person but isn't good at teaching. The problems that she uses in class to teach are much easier than the homework she gives you. Each week she assigns a lot of problems from the book,a maple ta homework assignment, and an In Class Assignment which never gets completed in class. There is a quiz on fri which uses the homework.
Not a difficult class, but Duffy isn't great at explaining things, especially in non mathematical terms. She is very willing to help and a super nice person. Lots of in class exercises. Not too bad overall though.
Her grading is brutal. You are allowed to make up some points on hw, but only up to 1/3 and only if the majority of the class got them wrong. Will give zero points if your hw is the same as others. Gives little help.
I really loved this professor. She made all of the units fun and she was exremely helpful! I would recomment anyone to take a class from her. Loved it!
Never explains the problems or the answers, she just goes through and rights them on the board and lets you figure them out later. I never understood anything she was saying. She is nice, but not good at teaching Calc. I would get a tutor or just a different professor.
i took the math/latin american studies section of this class. She couldnt explain anything well and would get frustrated with the class when we didnt know what she was talking about. I would not take that section of this class again, it was frustrating and a waste of time.
Very fun class and very interesting! I learned more in this math class then I did in any of my other math classes I have learned before and I had fun doing it!
Her linear algebra class is much much harder then it needs to be. She grades the homework incredibly harshly. 1 mistake can get you a C easy. Friends taking the same course with other profs have it much much easier. I've recieved no help out of class, her office hours are all during my other classes.
very helpful, made it interesting. has fun and laughs a lot.
This class isn't too hard. Duffy does not do a good job of helping with the material and explaining it in terms students will understand before thowing problems at them and thinking they'll know what to do.
If you're not really into math, this class is perfect. Homework is all done in groups. Class discussions are always interesting and easy to follow. There are always review days before exams. Weekly quizzes are easy points and there are also lots of projects to boost your grade. Final was only 5%. I would definitely recommend this course.
This is the worst professor you could possibly take. She is extremely unclear in class and very unfocused in he lessons. You will end up having to memorized a lot of formulas that are unusable later on in life. Avoid her at all cost like any other UWEC math professor.
She is probably the hardest math professor in this school, but if you do her homework and redo problems/tests, you will learn more than under any other teacher. I also had her for Calc III and did not think highly of her then, but that was her first semester. Take the earlier reviews of her with a grain of salt; she's improved a lot!
I really enjoyed this class! Math was never my favorite subject, but taking Duffy's class really made me enjoy it!! Professor Duffy is very enthusiastic and keeps all of the lectures interesting. All the homework is done in groups and there are reviews before every test. She even lets you pick all the units! If you need a math credit, take it!
I wish I never took this course. I like using numbers and equations and there is none of that here. We learned about concepts and abstract things like infinity, dimensions, and music.. we had to memorize scales for a math class. Something is wrong here. Made some great friends in the class. Duffy was nice, just not very good at teaching.
One of if not THE most HORRENDOUS math class i have ever taken. The material is not intuitive which means it requires a lot of help from the professor but she makes it IMPOSSIBLE to understand by speeding through topics and speaks so fast it almost sounds like a rap. She barely has any office hours and she is a super TOUGH grader.Take a diff class!
I took Math 107 which is Latin American Math. She was very knowledgeable in this topic even though this was the first year Math 107 was offered. She covers history and math from the Mayas, Incas, and Nazcas! All very interesting. She was thorough and had fun teaching this subject. Need help? Get her in her office hours! Take this class, it's fun!
Horrible teacher, class would be easier with a different teacher for sure. Does not explain anything, expects you to know everything, test, homework, quizes, and groupwork are hard and require a lot of time. Do not take this class with this professor.
This class was difficult. The material being taught requires you to do the homework and study quite a bit but it isn't the hardest class i've taken. The take home exams are very difficult, but Professor Duffy is extremely helpful if you go out of your way to go in and ask for help. She is a good professor and I would definitely take her again.
Duffy is an ok professor at best. I took calc in high school so it wasn't terribly hard for me, but it would be for somebody who hadn't with her. There is a lot of assignment work and the tests are hard because you barely ever have enough time to take them. She deliberately made me look stupid in front of the class twice, I wasn't too fond of that.
She offers help, but if you don't understand her in class she probably isn't going to be of any help outside of class. She's also comes off as condescending. She will subtlety throw shade, and I don't think she knows she comes off that way. Doesn't believe in curving grades since it's obviously your fault for not learning.
Colleen is a really nice lady, but she has a tough time putting math into sometimes, but the class is overall enjoyable. Also, homework is rare outside of class.
Prof. Duffy was an okay professor overall. Lectures were confusing at times but she is really helpful in her office hours. Her door is always open which is great. I had to visit the math lab a lot in order to understand the homework. Homework is pretty difficult, I would say more difficult than the exams.
Homework is usually done in class with groups so it's easy points. The material of the class is also easy, if you pay attention and do your work you'll get an A. Colleen is also very understanding and easy to work with.
Not your everyday math class. So if you suck at math this is the class for you. Everything is done in a group except quizzes and tests. Tests are challenging for some reason. The final is not though, she lobs one to you there at the end. Nice lady, friendly.
She is a shiny example of the teacher that says "don't pack up I still have 30 seconds left." She does a lot of examples on the board which is very helpful. There's a Friday 3 question quiz every Friday from what's learned that week. Must do the homework to pass. If i had her for Calc 1 I think I'd be better off in Calc 2
Great professor, calc 2 is a hard class so no matter what prof you have it will be hard. Duffy gives many examples in class and really goes beyond what most professors do to help you understand the material. She's really fun, and I would take a class with her again!
Very hard grader. She really cares about her students and wants you to learn, but is sometimes intimidating to ask questions. She's overall an ok prof.
I thrived in my high school calc 1 class but this class is absolutely terrible, she expects you to know everything and you feel like a dumbass when you don't.
Professor Duffy is one of my favorite professors at UWEC. She really cares about her students, and her class isn't too bad if you are willing to put in the effort. Certainly not an easy A, but if you work hard, it is possible.
I struggle with math and so I knew I would struggle with Calc 2. Duffy was incredibly helpful during office hours and offered extra credit, I failed almost every quiz, but because of that extra credit I passed the class. Group work may seem annoying but that also can save your grade! Of all the Calc 2 professors, Dr Duffy is by far the best choice!
Gives lots of chances to get points back on tests and online quizzes. You can do a little extra credit too. Helpful in office hours but she sometimes only explains things one way. Do the homework because all of the quiz questions are from the assigned problems.
Duffy will make you feel like you are incredibly stupid. Avoid asking her questions in class and only email her. She is so much nicer behind a keyboard and is very helpful. Overall, not the worst professor I've had. Although you feel stupid the whole time, if you put effort in, you'll at least get a B.
Duffy is an overall tough professor if you didn't take Calc in high school. But if you work hard she's willing to work with you and help you if you go into her office hours.
If you prefer to self-teach or have a good previous understanding/knowledge in Calc, this is the professor for you. If not, find someone else! She can be very demeaning when you don't understand a concept the first time. Best way to get help is finding a tutor elsewhere or through email with her. Beware: the example problems in class aren't helpful
Avoid if possible, has very high expectations and condescending when asked to slow down or answer questions. She's clearly very knowledgeable, but isn't good at explaining basic concepts. Course work is intensive, 3weekly quizzes, weekly group work and weekly online hw, as well as a group project. Extra credit is offerred though. At your own risk..
Duffy is the worst professor I've had so far at EC. During a typical lecture, she will spend minimal time explaining a new concept and then go right into example problems. She moves very quickly through each example as if she's doing it for herself rather than her students. She makes you feel dumb when you ask questions and gives too much homework.
I agree with some of the things the other people are saying about her. I was mad that I had to take her this semester based on other people's reviews and then I gave her a chance and really didn't mind her at all. show up to class listen take notes and get help if needed.
She was nice some days, also occasionally let us use our notes on weekly Friday quizzes. Other days, she was snarky and answered condescendingly when someone had a question. She flies through the board examples and often skips steps without telling you. That said, she has plenty of office hours and is very knowledgeable. Print off the lecture notes
Its not an easy A, you do have to show up and work for it. Go to office hours often to get help on proofs. Do the exam corrections even if you did well on the exam. Very kind and helpful, a pleasure to take class with her!
If you're are taking this class to learn calculus, understand concepts, and build up knowledge... do not take her class. Ms. Duffy doesn't bother with explaining concepts, procedures, or even what she's doing on the board half the time. She will assign work outside of class without explaining said work in class. Avoid this teacher.
I did not like her at all. She goes through lecture very fast, and does not explain. If you have questions she hardly answers throughly. She is also degrading and does not give good feedback.
Would never take this class again even if I had to. Avoid this professor at all costs. She gives insane amounts of work and her lectures go so fast you are just copying and not understanding the information. lectures are horrible
She was the most difficult teacher. You would have book problems to do each day, on top with online homework each week, with a quiz every friday, and it just adds up. Her lectures she goes very fast and makes it hard to understand. Just not the move.
Didn't really care about students individually. Talks extremely fast in lectures and doesn't explain anything thoroughly. I used to think I was good at math, then I took this course and everything went downhill, yet she never reached out.
Dr. Duffy is one of my favorite professors at the University. Her lectures sometimes only scratched the surface of a topic but take full advantage of office hours and ask questions!! She uses Webwork (unlimited attempts) and she allows exam corrections for some % back which boosts your grade a bit. If you put in the work for it, you will do fine!
Duffy was fundamentally one of the worst teachers I have ever had for a math class. She focused only on what was in the text, and failed to give any extra information on how the problems were worked out. Sure, some of the students did well in her class, but that is only because they had to put in about 20-25 hours outside of class, which was dumb
her class is tough and requires lots of work but she really cares and will help you to do your best.
Duffys classes are extremely heavy with outside-lecture homework. This is helps your overall grade in the end though. Shes pretty decent at explaining things, and she cares a lot about her students. Beware of course load, as you will do probably 20 hours of work outside of class each week. She is a kind, receptive, and genuine person.
Dr. Duffy was awesome. I am a horrible math student and she was the first one to actually help and work thru stuff with you so you really get it. I took her class during COVID-19, and she made sure we all were on track to pass and gave many extra credit opportunities; even before going online. Shes a great choice and really cares about ur success
Professor Duffy was very nice and she was a good teacher! She explained stuff very well. I'm usually not good at math but I really enjoyed learning this math content! :)
Really enjoyed taking calc II with Dr. Duffy. She's very nice and made topics really easy to understand! I highly suggest taking any math with her.
Her class is on Ultra-Nightmare difficulty.
It's obvious Dr. Duffy knows her stuff but that tends to hurt the learning experience. She often glosses over stuff she thinks is trivial, leaving you confused at the leaps she took. She's very pleasant in class but is ruthless with the work. Daily quizzes, weekly group work, group paper and more - likely to make it easy to recoup points
Duffy is a fantastic person when it comes to being personable. She is a great explainer when it comes to certain things, but sometimes she just falls short of things the students need to understand. she will sometimes skip a few steps and then wont go back because we should understand she offers a lot of make up points which help a lot.
I liked Duffy a lot. She gets back to you quickly, and she explains things well. Math is my worst subject, and this was my easiest math class I've had; a lot of it had to do with her explaining things to me. Sometimes she gets off track and that can get old after awhile, but for the most part she's a solid choice.
i love prof duffy, math is really hard for me but the way she clearly and thoroughly explains things makes these tests and worksheets a piece of cake. she is super flexible with meeting times and is more than happy to give you help if you show up to office hours or send her an email. i love her and i wish i could take more classes with her :)
The class was easy, but it felt like a lot of busy work and I did not enjoy taking it. Duffy is fine, but she can be condescending and hard to ask questions to.
I personally struggled a lot with calculus in general, but I feel much more confident now. Professor Duffy gives lots of ways to earn back points lost on quizzes and tests. There is a group project and reflection paper that are easy points to boost grades. This class overall is difficult, go to class, participate and get help when you need it.
Overall not very helpful when you need help. I had found myself asking other tutors and professors when she couldn't explain it. She assumes you know what she knows, so don't go into her class expecting to learn anything at a decent pace. If you missed a day or two due to complications and such, she will refuse any make up quizes and such.
Lectures are often over-explained. She docks lots of points for minor math errors on assessments. I pretty much had to teach myself everything over youtube (which was much easier to follow). I would not recommend this professor for anyone. She assumes we contain the knowledge that she has and does not do much groupwork. Very lecture heavy.
I would avoid her at all costs. She very quick and snappy and flies through lectures, sometimes not giving time to write down material until going to the next. Makes everything more complicated and uses advance vocabulary that makes no sense. Groupwork is almost pointless because very few can follow along what she is actually talking about.
Barely passing Calc this semester, not because of her, but the material. She gives a lot of free points through group work, homeworks and corrections. She is better than what most people say on here. She has an amazing personality, and willing to help you whenever needed! Responds fast to emails as well, she prioritize her student's mental health.
I loved having Professor Duffy, I had her for both Calc 1 and 2, and I would definitely recommend her to people. She is quick to respond to emails and has lots of office hours. The material is difficult, and go to office hours when you can, but she is a great Professor.
Lectures are mostly just listing theorems and definitions from the textbook. I had to teach myself with the textbook and additional video lectures I found on YouTube because lectures are way too fast and are extremely surface level. When asking for help outside of class she talks around the question rather than actually answering and explaining.
If you are willing to come to class and pay attention, you will have an amazing experience. Content is hard, but she responds to emails for help fast and is always willing to help you learn. Plenty of opportunity to gain back points lost. Would take any class by her again if I have the opportunity. Not too much homework, just right.
She actually helped and provided multiple ways to understand IF YOU ASK. She also listens to feedback really well. Lots of quizzes though, just stay on top of it and work with people through it. I took Calc 2 and it was really hard, but studying 2 days before the exam worked for me.
I absolutely loved professor Duffy as she truly cares for all of her students. She is quick to respond to emails and has lots of office hours for you to attend. That being said the content is hard, but if you do your work and take time to study you should be just fine. If I had the opportunity to take another class with her I definitely would!!
Loved this class and professor! Easy math class that I didn't really have to worry about. There are a lot of readings though, but don't worry if you forget to as she reviews them in class. There are 3 group projects but are very easy, but have to do outside of class time. She allows 10% points back on tests if you do corrections.
This class was frustrating. There are in-person as well as take home exams that are worth 50% of your grade. You can turn in "rough drafts" for homework but feedback isn't always helpful. Lecture is not clear, frequently will write part of a proof and then say "the rest is obvious" leaving everyone confused; almost no discussion. Do not recommend
This was by far the hardest class I've ever taken, and Dr. Duffy wasn't much help to make it any easier. Her lectures and homework were entirely unhelpful in preparing me for the tests (which were worth 50% of your grade). The workload for this class was ridiculous, and it took over my whole life. Her feedback on homework was usually unhelpful.
I am a music major and math has never been my strong suit; however, the material was very interesting and got me interested in math concepts. If you go to class and do the readings/ discussions, you should have no issue with the material. Very easy, though she could have clarified the rubric better at times. I don't love group work but it was fine.
If you are respectful, pay attention, work hard in class, etc, you can definitely do well. She is strict, not going to lie. I definitely spent my life on this class last semester, but it got easier with time as I learned how to study for it. Do the extra credit when you can!
I appreciated how structured her lesson plans were. She didn't always have the best lectures but she explained stuff in her office hours. She cares for her students and wants them to succeed. Something that I appreciated was the test corrections she did. For each exam, you could correct the exam and raise your grade by a letter.
This professor was easy to access outside of class but would very often get frustrated with having to explain the material. She broke up our group for a project because she knew we would get the project done and stuck us with people who don't complete their projects. The timing of the assignments being due was very uneven.
The class felt really unorganized, and the material doesn't feel important. Class was group project heavy but the deadlines didn't make any sense. There was more readings and culture related work then there was math, which was fine but we often spent days of class looking at vacation photos. Its an easy class but its also really frustrating
This course was more history based than math based for one. She had more readings and movies about the culture behind the methods to perform math than anything. You have to write out responses or essays on every test, there are many group projects with very little time to completed, and she will get frustrated reexplaining anything.
Professor Duffy provided a tough and fast-paced curriculum for Calc 2, but she has terrific lectures. Reading the textbook before class was a MASSIVE help so that I could follow along and not just be trying to keep up. She assigns lots of homework, but it is weighted pretty heavily so that tests won't ruin your grade. Just FYI there is group work
Fair grader, but extremely passive-aggressive and fake nice. Although attendance isn't mandatory, I would highly recommend it because personally I found it hard to remain caught up.
Overall a solid course and I felt as though I was graded fairly. Sometimes Professor Duffy went over class time by a maximum of 5 minutes which was stressful and she often plowed through explanations of her work when doing math, but was generally happy to help you through stuff when you inquired.
Really nice person. Grades things quickly, offers a lot of opportunities for feedback, and makes a lot of time outside of class for questions. Her lecture style is very quick and mostly about copying examples from her notes. Just know what to expect.
Professor Duffy runs a fast-paced Calc 2 course, but her lectures are great if you put in the work. Reading the textbook before class is key. The homework is tough but helps prepare for exams. Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for study prep.
Very passive aggressive, hot and cold with how nicely she grades things. Was not the worst, but definitely would not recommend.
