If you know how to write, then it makes this class easy. If you don't, then you'll need to expect her to get annoyed with you, but still be helpful about it. She isn't very clear with what she says sometimes but she grades fairly.
She grades "kinda" fairly, but the main problem is YOU DO NOT LEARN, and most the time, that's a good thing, but in this case, it tends to get extremely repetative and annoying to even bother showing up for lectures. I rather shoot myself in the
i am sometimes unclear about what she wants.
Flanagan is very disoranized. She does not teach but instead reads from the book. I do not recommend taking her class.

She is the worst! You can tell she was a nerd in high school and now thinks she's cool because she's a teacher...she befriended all the weirdos in class and hated all the normal people.
shes a nice teacher but she is very unclear on what she wants you to do . if you have her make sure you know your grammer like the back of your hand. you have 3 papers and 2 in class essays for ur grade. no exams.
Do not take her. She is a perfectionist and on papers she will always find something worng no matter how perfect your paper is. Yea she is pretty cool outside of class but so what. if you take her, make sure you know the handbook from head to toe.
SHE ALWAYS FINDS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR PAPERS, IF YOU THINK YOU ARE GOOD AT WRITING PAPERS WELL GO RIGHT AHEAD AND TAKE HER FOR ENGLISH, BUT TRUST ME SHE'LL FIND SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR WRITING SKILLS.
Overall she is a good teacher. Even though sometimes she can be a pain and grade hard, she helps you out as long as you need it.
terrible teacher... you can not do anything right for this woman
I was a very good writer in highschool, but for this woman, no one is! No matter what, she will always find something wrong with every paper you write, do not take her!
Nice lady, but truly a nerd. Never had problems writing an essay before this class, but she surely found a lot wrong with what I wrote. Directions are unclear and sometimes deceiving.
This woman just likes to give low grades. Even if you are a good writer she will give you a lower grade than you deserve. There are other teachers who are more reasonable than her. When I first signed up for this class I noticed that there were only a handful of people enrolled yet the other English classes were full... A red flag right there. Too
I agree with many students in the sense that this was not an easy class. So if you're looking for an easy A, don't take! I however, worked really hard and learned A LOT in this class. I thought I was a good writer going in but...I learned a lot and improved because of her. She was honestly one of the best teachers I've had.

I have had Flanagan for Writing 2 and Well yes sometimes she is a **** and yes very picky. But this is for your good. She makes you want to write and makes you write good. She is very helpfull to me and I have nothing but respect for her as a teacher. You just have TO GET ON HER GOOD SIDE : )
Although she is a nice lady and ready to help her students she really is teaching the wrong class. Her expectations are far too high and she grades freshmen papers as if they were on a senior scale. I understand she wants to make her students better but when she gives A quality work a C, it only disheartens them not drives them to do better.
shes difficult to understand what she wants. shes very picky and not very helpful. she doesnt give any breaks or extra credit... EVER!!! and she picks favorites
She SUCKS!!!
Ugh. I never so much trouble writing an essay before this class. She always seems to have something disheartening to say about your paper. While I re-learend a lot of MLA, when it came to writing an essay, I only wanted to write well enough to please her and nothing else; to see if she had something good to say. Such a discouraging class.
Wow... I can't believe she was tenured...
Taking Professor Flanagan's class forced me to re-learn everything I knew about writing. Before her class writing was something I enjoyed to do, also I was an A student. She grades to tough and does not know how to teach. She has no problem telling you you've done things wrong, but will not explain. If your in her class get out NOW!!
Flanagan grades really tough. Im not into english or anything but she helped with my writing and brought my writing up a level. She makes you earn your grade. She's a nice lady, just stay on her good side and visit her during office hours with questions. She can really help you if u are willing to listen, that is...
She knows her stuff
Horrible personality. She grades you quite heavily on whether or not she likes you. Quick to hand out bad grades and unwilling to explain why you received such poor marks.
She is just bad news... i went to her office almost every week... i did every assignment.. i fixed everything she wanted me to fix...We had to get at least a 70 on our final paper yet she gave me a 68 and knew three weeks before that i wasn't going to pass but decided not to tell me until the last day. that there was no point in coming to class.

I have to admit that her class was a tad bit challenging. If you don't want to spend time on your assignments, then don't take the class. Students who have been out of school for a few years may need to take a college prep class to get on the same wavelength with her. She offers ample opportunity to correct poor work, and explains your grade to you
By far one of the most horrid teachers i have ever encountered. Unless you can write perfectly, you'll most likely receive an "R" and have to re-d o the paper, with only a slim chance of a C. Can't teach well at all, her methods are not proper compared to other English professors i've encountered. IF U ARE NOT A PERFECT WRITER, DROP THE COURSE!
She is one of the best teacher's I've had. I would recommend this class to anyone that would like to become an English Major. You learn ALOT
Ms. Flanagan is by far one of of my favorite teachers!! I would tell anyone to take her because she really does help out everyone. When I first started taking the class I was a C student when it came to the quality of my papers and she has brought my grade up alot! If you do poorly in this class its because you choose to.
I like this class it was alot of writing but overall was pretty easy. She grades pretty well and if you not lazy there should be no reason not to get atleast a B! I was scared b.c she got alot of bad ratings on this page but i had no problems with the class.
I was very happy to begin this class. Although after my first paper, I realized everything I had trained myself to learn the previous semester was a waste of time and money. This teacher took my confidence and hopes with the C that she had given me. She may be great in ENC1101, but is a horrible grader for ENC1102. Please people BEWARE!!
Professor Flanagan is a nice lady and is always wanting to help but her class is very hard. Be ready to have all of your papers returned with markings all over them. She once marked someone off because their paper was not stapled perfectly. I saw her numerous times in her office for help and still received a C in the class. Good luck!!
Flanagan's a competent professor. She is very knowledgeable and pretty good with guidance. My only real complaint is that she is exceedingly picky about what she will and won't grade, and has very strong preferences. She deducted from my paper because I used the word 'thusly,' which she thought pretentious. Good but annoying sometimes.
the essay topics (especially the research paper) are really boring and kinda stupid. she will answer your questions, but if you dont ask any, she expects you to know everything.
Terrible teacher, everything i had learned throughout my years of schooling was completely useless. She shot my confidence down with a final C. Its her way or "your wrong" way. Every paper you write is more than likely a redo. If your get anything higher than a C consider yourself one of the lucky ones.
This Professor is hard to comprehend most of the time. Get ready to write ALOT of essays. If you find it hard to know what to write and how to explain yourself in your essays with out being biased Do Not take this class.
Prof Flanagan is a great teacher. She is the perfect teacher for students who are competent, not afraid of work, and interested in improving their writing skills. She is not for the lazy student who expects to get by with high school level work.
The persons that report Flanagan as a good teacher, are fairly outnumbered to those that think she is not. I took her along with calculus 3, differential equations, and music appreciation. She does not cover the dynamics of writing, just the structure. She also is ignorant of students needs and has quite a chip on her shoulder. Watch out!
all i can say is RUUUNNN!!! this lady couldnt teach if her life depended on it you learn absolutely nothing, all you get is your paper back with marks and never covers what you did wrong. her class is boring. there is other teachers better than her. i happen to love school and going to her class made me want to jump of a bridge.
This teacher should not be allowed to teach a fundamentals class. Worst professor/ teacher I have ever had in my life. I wanted to throw myself in front of a bus!!! There are so many more helpful, fair, and caring teachers in this school, and I suggest that you find one.
She is not a bad teacher per say, but she def. has a chip on her shoulder. She is very rude and short when she is asked questions, she acts like she is better than everyone. The kind of person that thinks their **** dont stink. If you want a teacher that acts like they care about their profession find a different english teacher.
If you have writing basics down (punctuation, grammar, etc), you will do fine in the class. I had zero interest in taking this course-I hate writing-but I found this class to be boringly easy, save for the research paper which is just time consumning. If you don't have the basics down, well, it sucks to be you and any writing class would be hard.
Prof. Flanagan is pretty tough and heavy handed when she grades. I have taken ENC1101 in the past and had to drop do to work, and by far Prof. Flanagan is ten times more difficult than any instructor I had in the past.
I have always done well in ENG until this class. This lady is CRAZY. This is ENG 1101 not a Thesis class for my PHD.I did all the assignments kept getting re-do did them over and still to no evail missed passing the course by 5 points. Stay away from this lady unless you want your major to be English.
Extremely picky, too much so for a Freshman level course. If you take her, make sure you know your basics: punctuation, spelling, etc. In your essays, support the heck out of your examples. She likes one example with lots of support instead of several small examples. If you take the online course meet with her to find out what she wants, it helps
I loved writing prior to taking this class. Now I hate it.I had a PhD read and edit all my papers and still could not pass.My PhD friend edited her directions and she would have failed by her own standards. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.In fact, she was the only prof I did not check on this site or I would never have taken her class.
SHE IS THE HARDEST PROF. IN SCC.IF U WANNA TAKE HER CLASS MAKE SURE U HAVE A VERY GOOD ENGLISH BACKGROUND. I JUST PASS THIS CLASS WITH C GRADE YET I WORKED REALLY HARD FOR THIS CLASS. SHE SHOULD NOT BE THAT MUCH HARD. YET SHE KNOW HER STUFF VERY WELL AND YOU CAN LEARN A LOT ABOUT HOW TO WRITE A PAPER AND HOU TO RESEARCH ABOUT A TOPIC.
this lady is. horrible. she really should be teaching highschool. shes never clear on what she wants, and lies about assignments. she's very tricky. every english class i've had i've made 5 and 6s on my paper, in her class i was lucky with a 3. she treats everyone like they're dumb. my advice, don't take her class.
This prof. Would fail herself if she were to take her own class. Says one thing, yet does another. Loved English prior to this class, now I can't stand it. She is VERY good about answering emails, yet doesn't answer clearly. I don't know why someone would want to be that kind of teacher. It is very negative-which is non-productive
Do not join section if you have other options! Students have to SLAVE for a grade of "C". I previously took this course with a different professor and had to withdraw for work reasons. I had an "A" in that class. I wish I would have stayed with the previous professor :(
This Prof. is bound in part by strict guidelines set by the English Dept. If you don't pass the research paper, no Prof. will pass you. Some students simply are not prepared for college as a full-time job. You have to be prepared for 3 hours work per credit just to pass. Recommendation: Take 12 credits per semester and go year round.
This professor was cool at first, then further along in the semester she began to suck! She is quite rude, and only likes HER style of writing which is really strange...Professor Flanagan did not give constructive critisism and would only mark up your paper and not tell you what was wrong with it...SHE WAS NOT VERY HELPFUL!
Teacher is horrible, I almost think that she wants students to be stressed and unhappy. Flanigen is horrible and would rather see students crash and burn. Dont set yourself up for destruction now be smart..
it's simple, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
I took this professor for both English I and British Literature I. For those of you serious about English, take this professor! You get an excellent foundation for future papers. Her section on avoiding logical fallacies has stuck with me through every paper I wrote. Yes, her manner of criticism can be harsh but it is usually true.
I like this professor but be prepared to work your tail off. She actually brought out the best in me. I did not like the fact that she would not budge on leaving early. I was marked absent for leaving 5 minutes early. Some of us have to support a family and did not come right from high school.
This class is not easy, but 25% of it is simply paying attention and FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS! This Professor does not suffer fools, laziness or excuses. If you do the work, follow directions, take it seriously and STUDY...you will do well. Flanagan is an excellent professor.
I understand we sometimes need a strong and encouraging teacher...but give me a break she is very insulting, rude, stress' you the hell out and gives you so much homework that you can even begin to focus on any other classes and family or a life, forget that you even have a life outside of her world!!!!!
If you take English I with Prof. Flanagan, be prepared to work. This class assumes basic knowledge of composition, and the better your existing grasp of the subject the better. (In other words, know how to spell and structure a sentence.) She may grade rather critically, but she was always available via email/phone/office hours.
Professor was unfair in her grading. Do not take this class if you want to earn an A or even a B in English.
If you are looking for an 'easy A', this is not the professor for you. If,however, you are taking your school career seriously and want someone that will teach you the right way to do things, hold you accountable, and set the foundation for future writing, this is the professor for you.My only complaint is the time it takes for her to grade papers!
I took this class online because I thought it would be easy. I was wrong, I thought by the time I was done I wouldn't like the class but I did. She is a hard grader but will help you improve your writing and do your best. You have to work for the good grade in her class, not for anyone who will slack off. I would recommend her.She helped me a lot.
This class was a total waste of time. A good friend of mine is a english professor at Rollins and a published writer. This friend edited my papers during this class and I was still given failing grades.I even spent hundreds of dollars to have my papers double checked by a tutor.I later passed ENC1101 with an A+ and now in medical school. Shes a foo
She is very helpful and helps the students understand anything that they do not understand. As long as you do the work, there should be no problem. It is not an easy A class though.
Only take this class if you want to be put down. She is very hard to please. She will pick your papers apart and leave you with no constructive criticism to go from only criticism. Very harsh, unfair grader. Don't waste your time or money like I did.
she was very hard to please
She is nice but by the book. Everyone has a way about them and if you can understand hers, then you'll be fine in her class. Like they are saying, it's not an easy A. Do the work, attend class and ask questions if you have any. I liked her and I haven't been in school for 17 years, hated English and have never done a book report...I did fine!
I chose this professor because she was recommended by a friend. She was very good. Just make sure that you ask questions if you have ANY and she will help you out. Not an easy A, but she was very informative.
If you possibly can, always try to be 10-15 minutes early. If you are late, you have to stand in front of the class and teach something. No cellphones allowed, but she does sometimes allow ipads and laptops. Participate in class discussion, pay attention, and you will do fine.
Judging by some of the responses, a few of you could use a strict English teacher. Profesor Flangan makes you earn your grade. Pay attention and learn something.
she is not an easy A but, she just want you to learn, she is really clear about when assignments are due and what she wants from you. It is true she is strict and hard at the beginning, just show her you care about learning and she will help you out. I really like her and she never refused to help me or answer my questions
Prof Flanagan is an excellent teacher if you want to learn how to write papers and form basic thesis statements. The things I learned in her class, I still use today. Yes, she doesn't tolerate laziness, but do your assignments and she will grade you well. She is very helpful and nice. I recommend taking her class!!!
Without a shadow of doubt, she's the best English teacher at SSC. Students who want to learn, go for her! She's very knowledgeable, helpful and always accommodating. I also took her for ENC 1102 and ENL 2012. She made my experience at SSC unforgettable. Scored an A in all 3 classes! Just be willing to do your part :)
Colleen Flanagan IS A TRUE PROFESSOR HAS LOTS OF RESOURCES IN SAKAI USE THEM STILL HAVING TROUBLE SEE HER DURING HER OFFICE HOURS NOTE: SHE WANTS ADULTS IN HER CLASS SHE LECTURES & IS VERY ORGANIZED AND INTELLIGENT ALSO INTUITIVE SHE CAN SPOT THOSE WHO WANT TO LEARN FROM THOSE WHO DO NOT PUT FORTH EFFORT I RECOMMEND
Very hard to please, doesnt provide much help when reviewing papers and assignments, literally didnt do a single thing in class for 3 weeks straight, but still had to show up to sit and do nothing. She doesnt seem very consistent when grading certain papers compared to others, all in all i would not advise taking her class, even tho i still passed
She was a very good professor. Shes very funny. She can be very helpful and wants to see her students succeed. Her attendance wasn't mandatory but i would recommend coming in because it helps your grade. Just do your work and you'll get a good grade. I really liked her a lot.
she graded your papers super hard, most of the time the highest you'll get on them was a C. It seemed like everything had to perfect in order to get an average grade. Honestly I would not recommend anyone choosing her for a professor.
I do not recommend her class at all, she grades super duper hard .The highest grade i received was a C on my research paper. I failed the class and now i have to retake the class. !!! Once again i do not recommend her !!!!
an amazing professor! she is funny, informative, and really teaches you what you need to know. Although she is a bit of a tough grader, its college. You can't expect to get your grade handed to you. She gives you an exact outline of what you'll be doing every day in class which is extremely helpful so you know when you'll be able to miss class!
I took this professor for English 1 and Brit Lit. I am done with Seminole and am two internships from graduating UCF. Still, the best professor I have ever had.
All assignments must be perfect just to get by. She doesn't like when you leave the room without her permission (no restroom breaks).
Academically, she is a good professor due to her love of English. She is tough on grading so beware. Also make sure you ask a lot of questions because if you don"t understand you will suffer. She is an English teacher, so, expect your work to be perfect or near perfect. She can be a bit condescending but its to be expected considering .
she is very helpful, and her lectures arent that long when she does do them, but that is rare. when you do something wrong she is very helpful in getting you to the solution
Professor Flanagan is a great teacher. She lays out all assignments and gives great feedback. It is a college course so her grading can be a little tough, but if you follow her rubrics and listen to the advice she gives you you will pass with a A or B no problem.
Professor Flanagan is a good teacher. She jokes a lot but also very strict. She doesn't assign A's very often. Work hard on your papers, make them perfect, and she might pass you with a B. I feel I worked hard enough to deserve an A but she apparently didn't agree. Tough grader.. Beware of this before turning in papers!
HORRIBLE. Do NOT take this class. RUN!
This class was really stupid. Its like whenever anyone would write and essay it would be so difficult to please her. She makes you change your writing so drastically, its like she wants you to write like a kindergartener.
Professor Flanagan was a great professor, and I'm glad I took her. I learned how to write a really good paper, but I had to definitely work for my grade. It's not an easy A, but if you work hard enough and show up to class, you'll definitely pass. If you want an easy A, don't take her, but do take her if you want to learn how to write well.
Coming from high school and having so much more English assignments and more wanted from me, this class was a piece of cake. She gives you a rubric for things she exactly wants in your assignments. You don't have them, she will mark you off for it. Easy as that. She also offers many different times to help work on your paper with you one on one!
YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR YOUR GRADE! She's very strict too. Highly don't recommend any student to take this class. Research paper was SUPER stressful. Good luck to those taking this class, you'll need it.
Professor Flanagan is a very caring person. It's a College Credit therefore you must show up, be on time, participate and do your work as expected; nothing new in that. The work that she gives is easy if you do it as she recommends it. She's helpful and gives lots of deadlines so you'll be organize with your papers, she also gives lots of examples.
This is the second class I have taken with professor Flanagan and I have to say I absolutely love her teaching style. Having a syllabus that's correct and easy to follow rubrics help a lot. I would take any classes she teaches.
The best professor campus!
I took Prof. Flanagan for English 1 as well. Having a bad history with English, I has extremely happy with both classes. She is very clear on her expectations, and always makes sure students understand what they need to do to improve.
Tough grader when it comes to papers and timed writings. Strict on electronics and talking in class. Although I asked for help outside of the classroom, she basically told me that I was going to fail, and that there was nothing she could do. Would not recommend to other students.
She is sometimes lenient with assignments not being turned in on time but she is quick to take points off. She is not very helpful if you have questions and assumes that you should know what you're supposed to do, even if she didn't make it clear. She holds you until last minute of class even after sitting there doing nothing for the entire time.
she's soooo picky on grading essays. My teacher last semester wasn't as picky as she was. Also her laugh is annoying.
She tries to be funny a lot in class, your typical cheesy jokes. Get ready to write a lot!! She grades super hard as well.
This prof seems like a great person but she grades very hard. I worked extremely hard in her class and did well. I have friends who are English profs and they said they would give me an A but she was being to harsh with her grading. I wish she would grade a little easier. If I could go back I would take Weber instead
she would not let us leave class early even if she is done with the lecture and if we did she would considered it a tardy. she counts tardiness and she does not even post grades so the whole semester I had no clue what I had until she posted grades.
You really have to work hard in her class. She has a certain writing style that she prefers and if you dont follow that style, she will mark up your entire paper.
Shes the worst she wouldnt let us leave early and she assigns a hundred papers with the toughest grading posssible she gives attitude for a simple question and she doesnt post grades till the end of the semester !!! RUN
Heres all you need to know- Shes a nice lady but you will NEVER make her happy. I turned in a work cited page in the exact form she asked for and she still marked me down. She keeps tract of everybodys tardiness and takes attendance every day. She doesnt have WiFi at home so good luck getting in touch with her. Take legit anybody else.
go to a nearby bridge. Look under the bridge for a homeless person. Ask the homeless person to teach you English. You will be better off doing that than taking flanagan.
I felt this class was a waste of time. Required to go to class since attendance is a grade but I couldve done ALL the work at home. This class was a bore. She required a textbook we used maybe 3 times all semester and the rest was "for leisure" to become a better writer. Not sure how reading a bunch of essays makes you a better writing.
terrible at teaching and pointless classes that dont teach you anything
If you want to take a hard class with a teacher that treats you like youre in high school then go ahead
Shes a nice person, she listens to your questions, and is very interactive during her lectures. Attendance is very important to her, and she will make you work for your grade. Before she assigns anything, she makes the prompt clear. She made sure we understood all the literature we went over. Be ready to work and learn a lot in her class.
Flanagan seems like a very nice person outside of class but I could not care less for how she grades or teaches. Guidelines for papers are specific but if you ask for clarification, she answers condescendingly. If you write in a style that she personally doesn't like, prepare to get your paper marked up for everything under the sun.
If you want to take this prof. heres my advice. Dont.
Really tough grader. Not very pleasant. My friends did half the work i did and got better grades.
At first one would think that she's really helpful and available after class. However, I had an incident where my home was damaged by a hurricane. After explaining this to her, she expressed sympathy and then failed my one paper which I could not focus on because of what happened to my home. My A went to a very high D.
Professor Flanagan upholds my high expectations of a college professor. She is fair and completely flexible to any circumstance requiring a late turn in or missed class. Failure in her classes is only due to lack of effort on the part of a student, and even then she will attempt to remedy the problem.
She is an awful teacher! DONT take her she's super rude and very hypocritical! You will never get a 100% on anything you do even if it matches her exact criteria, nothing is ever right for her. She treats you exactly like your back in high school and hate school all over again. Save yourself and DONT take her.
Shes a terrible teacher who is terrible at grading papers and assigns so much that is due in such a short amount of time. Overall do not take this class with this professor! thank me later :)
This teacher made me feel like I was taking an AP English 4 class when it was just a standard English 1 class. The amount of work she had us do was nothing like the other English 1 classes and she will light ur paper up with errors and mistakes and proceed to write you an entire essay of her own on the back that is hardly legible. Take anybody else
Be ready to feel like you're in high school again. Heavy reading and textbook use, even the introduction post was heavily graded like what?
She grades tough and gives a lot of work. In first essay draft, she said my paper was too short, but it wasn't at all. I had two full pages, which she had ASKED for. I also had put my work cited information the correct way and she gave me a "0" for the MLA section, which obviously I did correctly. I suggest DO NOT TAKE
She is a horrible teacher, very rude to all of her students. Even if you work a full time job and also do school she does NOT care. Not flexible with any due dates and if you miss a deadline be prepared to get a horrible grade. I missed one deadline because of work and I received a grade that was barely anything. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. waste of $.
I wasn't too taken back by the work load it was easy. Unfortunately when it comes the papers that are worth 10-20% of your grade she gives minimal help. I let her know that the materials she gives aren't helpful when writing the paper but all she does is refer me back to the material that I say wasn't helpful!
This professor is rude and mean, essay papers are graded super hard, and her reading material is awful, when you ask her a question, she always refers you back to her reading material that is not clear enough because it has too much of information crowded. NOW I UNDERSTAND WHY HER RATINGS ARE THIS LOW.
She failed a lot of my papers that clearly followed the stuff she wanted. She really did not care for my grade. She won't let us go back and check answers on quizzes. DO NOT RECCOMEND her.
Horrible professor. It feels like she does everything in her power to make you fail the class. Shes not helpful and doesnt give extra time for anything. I dont understand how a professor can sit there and be so harsh on students taking an ENGLISH class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WOTH THIS PROFESSOR.
DO NOT take her class. I am surprised that Seminole State still employs her . She should not teach . Does not help at all
Run for the hills, even if I got an A I wouldn't take her class. It is very very hard. Take the reviews serious even if the person has passed. She grades hard as heck, you have to read for days, lots of work on top of work. She will disapprove of topics you find feasible to write about. This class is for someone who has no life outside of school.
She literally doesnt teach you anything! If you have a question she just refers you to the text book. The hardest grader I ever had I literally put in all my effort for every paper and I could never get higher than a C .
She has VERY specific hours of response time if you need help. Monday- Thursday from 9 am to 12 noon. If you have questions after, tough luck. No access to all weekly material, she may want you to submit a 3page essay before you have access to all the weekly reading material. You may not have access during the weekend till it unlocks by date.
Terrible Teacher. She needs to be out of the school system immediately.
Just don't.
She is probably the worst professor in history. She tells you one thing then contradicts herself. Even the advisors said she needs to retire. Her lessons are from 1983 and talks about handwriting when we are an online class. I feel she hates her job and wants all her students to suffer. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
When I first read these comments before signing up, I expected that they come from students that just don't work. I am a hard working student and I struggled. Her tests have things that are not in the text and she only assigns work with smut in it. The main exams are extremely difficult and she does not prepare you well. Do not take.
She literally tells you how to fix your paper or anythign else, and then you go to fix it and she changes her mind. You can not make her happy no matter how hard you try. My English teacher at my own highschool said she was unbearable!
DO NOT TAKE!!! There are not enough words in the English dictionary to describe just how terrible this teacher is. I promise you, it is just better for you to run away now.
Worst Prof. ever!!!! She is the toughest grader. I barely passed, she sucks!!!
The worst professor I have had at SSC so far. The syllabus said 10 hours a week, so 2 hours a day on this class and it was not lying. Highly do not recommend. Such a tough grader and can never make her happy even if you do EXACTLY what she asks. You could copy her examples word for word and she would find an issue with it (other than plagiarism)
I have never written a review about a teacher before but for this professor... I want to save other students from taking this horrible class. I cried so many times throughout the course of her class and it was just horrible. For your sanity PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE.
DO NOT TAKE. I feel like the material would have been a little more enjoyable if taught by someone who wasn't setting up their students to fail. She is extremely petty and makes tests so hard that you are unable to finish. She admits to setting them up so you barely have enough time and thinks it's funny. SERIOUSLY don't waste your time on her.
Tests are unreasonable. She grades papers extremely tough. You might get 60% on a paper with the only reasoning being your title was the wrong font. She's an absolute nightmare of a professor and is clear that she isn't interested in the success of her students. If her class is the only one left, I suggest taking something else completely.
This class was a nightmare! She would give you due dates for assignments and then would grade them and give them back a day before the next draft was due, leaving you no time to fix the paper, especially if it came back as an "F" she would give 1 point extra credits here and there which didn't help at all it was a joke.Take the bad reviews serious
Teacher gives VERY LITTLE feedback. She limits her time in her office to 3 hours daily, meaning after those 3 hours you will most likely not hear from her again. Does very little one on one.
Really tough grader, tons of homework, and expects you to live for this class. Locks all quizzes and exams once taken so you cannot use them to study. Gives you barely enough time to finish exams. Takes forever to get graded papers back, and the feedback does not help. VERY PICKY. Barely any extra credit. As a person, seemed nice.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I don't say that lightly but as someone who loves literature/English classes, I HATED every second of this course. She will give you 5 minutes to complete 20 questions and if you struggle it's because you "didn't prepare enough." Her quizzes are NOT easy and there's a ton of them. I could go on and on about her STAY FAR AWAY
I think a lot of what people say on this forum is true: she's a harsh grader, there's a lot of work, and there are few chances to increase your grade. Still, as someone who isn't a fan of English in general, I found her course to be rewarding. She makes you read + take notes to be successful. Getting an A is possible. Don't take for an easy grade.
To much to do in so little time. This for a session A class it was sooooo hard. There are way to many papers. Her grading is beyond me. Failed. Will retake with another professor.
she as a person seems nice, but as a teacher, she's not great at actually giving you the resources to actually get through her class. she gives a lot of pointless homework, always teaches by the book leaving no creativity to be used, and is overall very unhelpful when it comes to learning how to write anything, so i wouldn't recommend this class.
Grades very harshly and never on time. I would receive my feedback after my draft would be submitted, not giving enough time to revise my work. People do have different way of learning. However, grading harshly will not fix the situation for future classes.
This professor is very nice and professional, but truly should not be a teacher. She grades harshly, with practicly no explanation, the only explanation she gives is review the slides. She is very by the book, with little to no understanding of life situations. Always grades assigments days late. The final research is terrible, DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!
Avoid her at all costs. Doesn't grade timely, rubric is incredibly difficult to pass, she thinks she's always right when you talk to her. Talks down to you like you're a toddler. Locks the entirety of the course so you're imprisoned in her ways.
2 books, 50+ docs w/instructions. So disorganized, but your work needs to be structured, pristine, and interesting for her. Otherwise she'll let you know, or not. When? Who knows? Pick her and you'll spend as much time on her stuff, as all your other classes combined. Your GPA will go down. If you picked her, drop her class. Now. You've been warned
Her grading is tough and she is rude in her feedback. When she give feedback for an essay for example, she will give feedback but in a condescending way.
She is harsh and doesn't understand life problems. Unable to get my textbook for first three weeks of class due to the fact both me and my parents work. I every day till six, Dad is a teacher and my mom is a pharmacist. She was not understanding even when my grandpa passed and I couldn't do like seven assignments. She isn't helpful or considerate!
Hello fellow students, RUN!!! Prof. Flanagan is what is known as a terrible grader, will yell at you through the comments of your paper and has some very demining comments. If you ask questions she will only refer to you to the textbook and on multiple occasions provided the wrong page. Graded solely on what she believed and has some heavy views.
If you follow her format exactly you should not get lower than a C on her papers and there are many extra credit opportunities. Tests are mostly recall, sometimes on small details. I highly suggest listening to the audiobook while reading and taking the class with a friend. Overall, not an easy class but it isn't impossible to get an A.
Contrary to what some of the reviews suggest, Prof. Flanagan isn't necessarily condescending - however, she is an immensely tough grader. Doesn't matter how much effort you put into her papers or how much you follow the directions, you'll get at best a B. Discussion posts are the only good thing about the class, but they're not worth much.
She does not work with you no matter what your life circumstances are, not lenient, tough grader, and a literature junkie. If you are taking this class for credits, are a full time employee while being a full time student and have limited time between your classes, DO NOT TAKE HER. I enjoyed the class but wish I had a different professor.
Took her for British Literature. Types out her lectures, doesn't record them. You basically have to teach yourself. She is tough. Even if she knows you're trying she won't help you out. Wouldn't recommend.
Where to start she is quite terrible you have to practically teach yourself everything, since all her lectures are written, also in your final exam you have to write an essay along with answer 30 questions all under an hour oh and you can't back on the tests do not take her class just don't
If you have an option to have her as your professor, do NOT have her. Taking her course online especially with a shortened 6-week summer semester was none other than a nightmare. Instructions are the most unclear thing I have ever read, and she is an EXTREMELY tough grader. Not only that but her feedback is back-handed and quite rude. Run away.
If you could have another professor, please pick them. This professor doesn't allow room for questions. Also, I didn't receive certain grades till the final day of the semester which is not helpful. The feedback given is "okay", but petty. There is a heavy workload for sure, but English is going to be heavy regardless.
Avoid Professor Flanagan's ENC1101 class at all costs. She is a harsh and unreasonable grader, with unclear instructions and a condescending attitude. Even with the help of tools like unstuck study, the workload is overwhelming, and she shows little empathy for students' personal circumstances. Pass on this class if you can.
Initially assignments seem easy but she just makes the process harder with unclear instructions, inconsistent feedback, or heavy deductions without reason. I'm sure she cares about English and teaching but at least online she comes across very particular and passive aggressive. Don't bother if you're not ready to fight for your grade.
Do not take this teacher if you can help it. All her feedback is petty and rude. The instructions for her assignments are so unclear and she grades so harshly. She shows little empathy for students and really doesn't care about your situation. On the brighter side tho her feedback is helpful sometimes. There also isn't too much work in the class.
Drop the class. Just look at her reviews. it's horrible she will put you down. The research final paper makes you feel like you're on a witch hunt. Please do not take this class, I was put on probation due to asking and question grades, Shes a straight liberal and sticks by it, don't ask or question a grade or you'll find out.
DROP THE CLASSSS SHE IS BAD!!!
Online class, very tough grader, no understanding or lenience. Grades very tough for a online class with little instruction and does not let you make anything up. A lot of reading that she does not help you with.
Wish I found this page before registering for this class. I am not fresh out of high school and come from a family of educators. I am familiar with corporate etiquette and professionalism - this professor does not meet expectations for a supportive educator nor a professional in their field. She seems miserable really.
terrible teacher, quit and drop class immediately.
This professor is very rude and unprofessional. She makes an easy class harder for no reason and grades harshly for no reason. Avoid at all costs.
This professor is very difficult to approach with questions or concerns. Her grading is strict, and she provides minimal support throughout the course. Be prepared to work independently and meet very high expectations without much guidance.
Run away from this professor. She's bad.
I WISH I found this before taking this class. I can understand not having tolerance for certain mistakes, such as not following directions correctly or late assignments (which she has zero tolerance for BTW) however, she is so unprofessional and disappointing. I'd bet my last penny she takes joy in making students feel small and insignificant.
Hard professor. Beware with her assignments. Makes the class and assignment hard for no reason. She will say, "Following directions is an important soft skill you will need in the workplace." Got a 50% once bc she assumed I didn't follow directions but I had to talk down to her and say that everything was there. Overall don't take her. RUN.
Prof. Flanagan was difficult at times in terms of grading. She expected very highly of the students writing. Overall I think the class was a 3/5 difficulty. She had about 2 drafts that she would grade before one of the three core papers. While she was a little harsh, you could ask questions, and she was clear in her expectations.
I had her over the summer, she was terrible. Her instructions were confusing, she will insult you for "not following directions". Tough grader as well. Ended with a 90% in the class because she gave me a 100% in one assignment that brought my low grade up. Overall dont take her.
She wants you to fail her class, making you waste money and time. She's definitely not clear in her feedbacks, all what she says is that you have done your homework with AI, when you haven't and that you haven't follow instructions when you had. She's a terrible professor, she's making me waste my time and money.
I don't even know where to start, it's like your set up to fail no matter what you do. She would give me feedback but most of the time it wasn't clear, so I was still left confused.I ended up withdrawing this course.
Very tedious assignments/papers. I didn't have much communication with the prof since the grading criteria was pretty straightforward but she was pretty tough when it came to grading and feedback. She seemed miserable and took it out on students. Just don't take this class and save yourself the headache.
